Welcome to this new dev diary. In the first entry of the year, we introduced the Transponder, using it as a way to explore the distinct rationalism of Imperial architecture, which sets it apart from the raiders’ approach. Today, we want to share more concepts of Imperial props and dive deeper into the thought process behind designing the raider colonies of Neterun.
As we mentioned in the last dev diary, the lore of the Galaxy of Neterun envisions colonization unfolding in two phases: an initial period when Imperial explorers were actively charting the galaxy, followed by a second phase dominated solely by raiders. To reflect this history, we created two distinct architectural styles, with Imperial structures characterized by pronounced geometry and a stark contrast to the raiders’ more improvised constructions.

Looking at these concepts, you’ll notice that Imperial structures embody a geometric, angular regularity. They’re made up of interlocking blocks that fit together seamlessly, like a massive jigsaw puzzle. This modular design allows them to adapt and integrate with any asteroid or planetoid they encounter. Much of the Empire’s constructed spaces are square and modular, paralleling the raiders’ ship designs in their functionality and versatility.

Key features like magnetic hooks, drills, and spikes allow these structures to anchor themselves into rocky surfaces, targeting areas rich in minerals to extract Neterun’s valuable resources. In our lore, the Human Empire’s dominance stems not only from its capacity for expansion but also from its superior mining capabilities. This is why mining facilities received special attention during the concept phase. We wanted to evoke an environment deeply intertwined with the extraction and utilization of resources.

In resource-abundant areas, the Empire constructed small mining and transport structures designed for efficiency. Through this architectural storytelling, we sought to convey the early stages of galactic colonization. The rationality, geometry, and layered composition of these Imperial designs narrate a history of humanity shaping its surroundings in pursuit of imperial grandeur. These structures seem to cling to Neterun’s environment, drawing lifeblood from the cosmos for the glory of the Empire.

We love sharing the ideas and inspirations behind even the smallest elements of Hell Galaxy, and we hope you’ve enjoyed it. We look forward to seeing you in the next dev diary.
Farewell, raiders!
