Attention! The enemy is coming
Although one can say that Ancient Greece is a beautiful, sun-drenched, or even idyllic setting, in reality it is not without its problems. One of the biggest and most dangerous of them is hostile aggression on your territory. Just imagine - you struggle to build your own empire from scratch. You gather more and more wealth, give a home to new citizens, develop technology and production. And then... you spot hostile units on the horizon ???? Make no mistake, they want to invade your city and grab your resources for themselves.
We talked about the war system in the last part of our "Ruler's Manual" series, so today we will focus on two basic military buildings that will allow you to recruit the defenders of your Polis. We'll take a look at the Barracks and Archery Range and check how your soldiers' training is going - let's go, commander!
Barracks ✊
Fighting is a difficult craft, where every single mistake can prove fatal. That is why only prepared and properly trained units are sent into battle. The most basic military building is Barracks. It is on the yard of this building that your soldiers practice spear and shield fighting or learn discipline and following orders ???? Barracks allow you to train units relatively quickly and cheaply (however not only) from the early stages of the game. Over time, as your empire grows stronger, you will be able to afford to build more Barracks which will result in even faster unit training and recruitment. It's up to you whether you choose a large, but rather simple army, or elite yet quite expensive veteran troops. Speaking of which...
The simplest unit, requiring the least resources and training, is the so-called Psilos. The Psilos ranks consist mainly of commoners equipped with a simple shield, a bronze-tipped spear, and leather shin guards. Due to their poor armor and rather simple training, their strength lies in number, not quality.
The next, fairly more advanced type of infantry is the Hypaspist. Their heads are protected by helmets, and their torso is covered with a simple armor, and a bronze-plated wooden shield. The Hypaspist also wields a long bronze-tipped spear ????
The most dangerous units that can join your ranks are the Hoplites. Their entire body is protected by a bronze armor and a solid, round shield. You can also identify them by a flashy crest on their helmets and long coats. Hoplites are equipped with swords ???? but their weapon of choice are double-ended spears.
Archery Range ????
In addition to classic infantry, you can also rely on ranged units, which are excellent at striking enemies from long distances. They need special conditions to maximize their skills and effectiveness, so that when the time comes, they will be ready to eliminate the foreign threat. Fortunately, Archery Range is just perfect for this purpose! The architects made sure that this unique building includes long shooting tracks, targets to practice accuracy, and an observation tower ???? Just like Barracks, the Archery Range is one of the basic buildings that you will be able to build in the early stages of the scenario. Well then, let's see what awaits the recruits who visit it!
Once again, we'll start with a description of the most basic ranged unit. The only task of the Slingers is to shower the enemy forces with a barrage of stones fired from their weapons. Their equipment consists only of a tunic, a bag, and an iconic slingshot. It is a very cheap and quick-to-train unit.
Let us take a closer look at Toxotes ???? shooters equipped with deadly bows and arrows. They are known to be a terror of battlefields, as their attacks are very effective and can strike down entire enemy squads. Be sure to protect them from melee attacks, and they will surely prove their worth.
The most versatile range formation - the Peltast - uses formidable javelins. Such a javelin, thrown with enough force, can literally crush an incoming opponent ???? In addition to that, the strong points of the Peltast are their strong armor and high durability.
In the following parts of the series, we will return with descriptions of many other cool structures that will ensure the safety, well-being, and development of your city. We hope that the buildings presented today will find their place among the streets of your Polis, and that they will contribute to the growth of your magnificent empire! ???? As always - thank you and stay tuned!
