During the war and especially around Christmas, there were several unofficial and spontaneous truces where armies agreed not to shoot at each other. Soldiers would get a chance to take care of the wounded, burry the fallen and were able to find shelter against severe hardships, including frostbite, avalanches, and supply shortage. The last one, not being something uncommon in the Alps on the Italian Front.
But the most well-documented one, which took place on a larger scale was the Christmas Truce on the Western Front. An event inspirend by this extraordinary moment in history is starting today (Dec 21) until January 7 in Verdun!

On Christmas Eve 1914, soldiers of both the British and German empires decided to lay down their arms and sing Christmas carols across the trenches. What followed was a rare occurrence during World War I, where troops of opposing sides would meet each other, shake hands, share drinks & food and play games like football.
A truly historical moment where humanity won over conflict.
