Vol.65 - Ready or Not Development Briefing
Ready Or Not
01.12.23 21:54 Community Announcements

Attention Officers,

Thank you for joining us for the 65th edition of our biweekly development briefing, December 1st, 2023!

Today we are going to go over some of the great work that’s gone into new weapons that have been added to the game, including the MCX rifle, LVAR rifle, F90 rifle, Supernova shotgun, UMP-9 SMG, TLE 1911, and the TPL less-lethal launcher.

Redone weapon models, covered after, are the breaching shotgun which is now an 870MCS, the M45A1 pistol, UMP45 SMG, and the MPX SMG.

Throughout we'll show and discuss much of the new gunshot and foley (handling) audio that has been added with most of the weapons above.

Lastly, we’ll take a look at re-worked ammunition values and penetration system. Revealed in this section is new training ammunition for use in training areas only, with a corresponding custom training MK18 rifle and G19 pistol.

Also, as you may have noticed from our post from on X yesterday, you can expect a big announcement from us at The Game Awards this December 7th!

Please keep in mind that the development content depicted in this briefing is a work in progress and may be subject to change in the game’s final state.

Vol.65 Development Briefing summary points:
(not a changelog)
New weapons:
- MCX rifle
- LVAR rifle
- F90 rifle
- Supernova shotgun
- UMP9 SMG
- TLE 1911 pistol
- TPL Less-Lethal launcher
Redone weapon models:
- 870MCS Breaching Shotgun
- UMP45 SMG
- M45A1 pistol
- MPX SMG
Weapon audio matches the furniture of a weapon (how it is constructed, such as stocks and rails). E.g. the MCX and LVAR have different foley audio since they’re constructed of different components despite being on the same MCX platform.
Reworked realistic ammunition values, including new tissue damage, armor penetration, cover penetration, spalling, and ricochet values. Engine blocks of vehicles now block ammo as a reflection of the detailed rework to cover penetration.
(For use in Training Areas only) New training ammo for the new designated blue furnished training MK18 and Glock19 models.
- New Training MK18 rifle (Blue) (Training areas only)
- New Training G19 pistol (Blue) (Training areas only)

New Weapons and Audio:

The new weapons listed below are the MCX, LVAR, F90, TLE 1911, UMP9, and TPL Pepperball Launcher.

As always, our audio design team has been hard at work crafting the most impactful authentic muzzle reports and foley possible. We have also made a major audio pass to distant gunshots across the board.

The videos below feature weapon audio and the new models alike to give you an idea of what your arsenal will look and sound like.

MCX:

In game description: “Highly popular with modern police tactical units all over the world, the MCX platform [could be considered as] slowly taking over the AR15 in terms of modularity, performance, and customization.”

“The MCX chambered in 5.56x45mm shares a similar resemblance to the one used by the CTSFO (the UK’s Counter Terrorist police unit), featuring an 11.5” barrel, a collapsing/telescoping stock, a custom charging handle, and a keymod handguard outfitted with side and lower rail sections for use with accessories. This rifle build was in the style of a traditional MCX, more alike the ones from the 1st generation.”

The MCX’s fantastic modularity is represented by the LVAR weapon we will discuss next.

LVAR:

The [in-game LVAR (or the Low Visibility Assault Rifle)] is chambered in .300 Blackout and is the first weapon in the game to be integrally suppressed. With .300 Blackout being a sizeable subsonic round, this rifle is an excellent combination of stealth and hard-hitting capability in a short-barrel configuration.

The LVAR is inspired by the LVAW (Low Visibility Assault Weapon) but ours notably uses “an MCX gen 1 upper and gen 2 lower, with the rest being LVAW parts”

Compared to the MCX, the platform it is built on, the LVAR is equipped with a unique folding stock, handguard, and upper/lower receiver, as well as many parts that were developed especially for the rifle. Due to the LVAR being only marketed towards law enforcement/military applications, it serves as a perfect rifle addition for the LSPD’s arsenal.

“Initial development proposals were to add [just] one MCX platform rifle chambered in 5.56 ammo only, but because of the modular nature of the weapon, it wasn’t too difficult to reconfigure a second MCX-style rifle to fire .300 Blackout, which is [what is known in-game as the LVAR.]”

F90:

The F90 is the game’s first bullpup-style rifle, featuring a barrel and magazine set further back than other conventional rifles to reduce overall weapon length. This new addition delivers you rifle caliber power in a compact state-of-the art package, a further iteration of the AUG rifle design that it is similar to.

“There were several suggestions on what the first bullpup rifle would be for the game. While the Austrian AUG was considered, the rail space was too limited, and it had a special progressive trigger feature to switch between semi and full auto which would have been troublesome to put in the game.

Ultimately, the F90 was chosen because it solved a lot of the problems we had with the AUG. The F90 has a simple selector switch (a tiny tab that sticks out that prevents the trigger from being pulled all the way through, effectively semi-auto), plenty of rail space which also allows the use of grip attachments, and the added benefit of being able to use STANAG magazines.”

Supernova

Shown below is the brand new pump action Supernova shotgun, loaded in 12 gauge, equally devastating as it is alluring.

TLE 1911:

“During the development of the new Police Station, a memorial was made for a decorated SWAT member who used a custom 1911 that became the TLE 1911. [Although] initially the TLE 1911 was supposed to be a prop weapon for the station, it is now its own useable pistol in-game.”

The new TLE 1911 pistol is custom ordered for the LSPD including an all-black finish, putting a twist on the classic beauty and functionality of this pistol into your officer’s hands.

This weapon has unique foley (general handling audio like reloads) different from its modernized cousin in the game, the M45A1. The original foley audio for the new 1911 was sourced from a 1911 Hardballer, which, fun fact, was stylized like the iconic Silverballer.

“Compared to the M45A1, the TLE1911 [also] has taller iron sights, a shorter beaver tail, and a full-length recoil guide rod. Because of this 1911’s non-railed frame, the TLE has a set of unique and classic attachments not shared with the M45A1.”

[previewyoutube=SdeUolR1JvE;full][/previewyoutube]

UMP9:

This variant of the UMP is chambered in 9mm ammo, allowing for more controllable recoil and 5 more rounds in the magazine than the UMP45.

What was already one of the most controllable SMGs in the game becomes surgically accurate with minimal effort considering its relatively low cyclic fire rate.

The UMP9 needs to be converted internally in order to be chambered in 9mm, with this weapon featuring a different replaced barrel, bolt, and magazine.

TPL Pepperball Launcher:

“To coincide with the revamped pepper ball mechanic [that has more area denial capability from lasting pepper cloud impacts], a new shorter alternative to the R7, the TPL launcher was added that you can use in super-tight spaces. While it does lack in ammo capacity, it does make up for it in reload speed.”

Redone Weapon Models:

Many of our existing models have been redone to better suit our desires for quality and immersion. These redone models include the 870MCS Breaching Shotgun, MPX, UMP-45, and M45A1.

870MCS Breaching Shotgun

This new model for the breaching shotgun, the now 870MCS Breaching Shotgun has a much shorter barrel, a with specially shaped grip on the pump and an overall higher model fidelity.

M45A1

The M45A1 was a model that benefited greatly from a remodel, for its previous version was generally too large and suffered from culling issues where the user’s hand would clip through the model.

This new version brings the scale into a more accurate level and showcases fine enhancements to its visuals. New foley audio has also been added for weapon handling.

UMP-45

Here is the enhanced remodel of our UMP45. The video below serves to compare the handling and audio with the new UMP9.

Ammunition Rework

Our ammo damage and penetration values have been revamped across all ammo types in order to provide more realistic gameplay. We based how much armor-defeating capability certain rounds should have based on their rated effectiveness against real-world tiers of ballistic armor. The variables of armor penetration, penetration distance, tissue damage, spalling, and ricochet potential are all now represented more appropriately across each ammo type.

An example of some of the immersive changes to cover penetration is how the engine block on vehicles will now appropriately shield you from incoming fire:

(GIF below: The rounds fired at the engine block of this vehicle deflect or are absorbed, providing you with a realistic level of hard cover in firefights. Park your feet with care.)

Last but not least, we now have training ammunition which is only able to be used in training areas with designated training weapons. Those designated training weapons take the form of a custom blue furnished MK18 rifle and G19 pistol. This ammo in its early state currently functions like an extremely weak rifle cartridge, however this will likely be improved upon in the future.

(Image below: In-game replay photos of the special blue training MK18 rifle and G19 pistol with their exclusively designated training ammo visible loaded in the magazines. This development screenshot is not taken within a training area, however it will only be usable in training areas in-game.)

Conclusion

Hopefully this newsletter can help you prepare your favorite in-game loadout ideas for 1.0 and our future updates. Speaking of which, we’re still on track to have the 1.0 release out to you before the end of this year!

Before we go, one last bit of intel,
