What sets the tone in the game you want to play, is it the gameplay, the story or the setting? World building can be a complex craft, even if you have powerful tools like Unreal 5 to build them with. Today we’re taking a look at the various creative decisions and in building out the world of Unawake.
With Unawake creating a dystopian world wasn’t enough, everything needed a purpose, invariably how and where you place elements can have a huge bearing on things like balance and function for a player.
Level design can be a hugely creative process but consideration for the player is also an important aspect due to the fact its integral to the player character's journey in the world, giving players a sense of discovery, to explore and find things for themselves was an important factor for Unawake.
Unawake is a world with many paths, towering columns of stone and spires, monuments, its a natural world with multi-levelled structures, pathways, bridges and plateaus. Choke points create either opportunity or danger depending on your position and blind corners and cavernous areas are deadly ambush points to be wary of. In Unawake the path you take could lead to loot and rewards or it could lead you to ruin and your untimely demise.
