Bukavac
The first one on our list is Bukavac. Below you can find some clues and insights on this brutal beast and its terrifying appearance.
A MYSTERIOUS CASE AT NORTHERN ŚRÓDMIEŚCIE
Supposedly “a devil came and made her do it”. What’s the truth behind the mystifying death at Northern Śródmieście?
The story we are about to describe is so bizarre it seems like the perfect material for a crime novel. It all started as a minor conflagration in an apartment on Miodowa Street owned by director and playwright Kacper Rogoziński, whose adaptations of plays by Shakespeare and Słowacki have made him a success across Europe. First spotted by the director’s wife, a small fire had broken out and she swiftly alarmed the neighbors. Luckily, the fire brigade was able to arrive just in time to put out the blaze before it caused substantial damage to the entire building.
Yet, as it turned out, an even more treacherous fire was consuming the heart of Madame Rogoziński. When members of the fire brigade arrived on the scene, they discovered not only flames but also director Rogoziński, lying in his bed and succumbing to death from five knife stabs to his abdomen. Before he died just a few moments later, he was able to point to his wife as the perpetrator of the attack.
So, was this conflagration that endangered the entire Northern Śródmieście only an inapt cover-up for cold-blooded murder? We were unable to reach the recently-widowed woman, yet sources at the Warsaw police station claim that she is now completely unstable, telling all around her that “a devil came and made her do it”.
Northern Śródmieście, Warszawa 1905
Even though Northern Śródmieście is considered to be one of the finest and wealthiest parts of 1905 Warsaw, it still has its own demons lurking in the shadows.
One of the finest and wealthiest parts of Warsaw welcomes visitors with beautiful palaces, enchanting parks, and proud monuments symbolizing strong imperial rule. It is the place where you will meet the city’s illustrious elite. It is a place where you’ll feast on delicious delicacies in local confectioneries, as well as provide food for your mind as bookstores in the area provide access to both classic and modern literary works. Northern Śródmieście is also home to one of the most famous thaumaturges in Warsaw.
A TERROR LURKING IN THE SHADOWS
In the distant land of Syrmia, which lies between the Danube and Sava rivers, there are stories about a horned monster silently lurking below the surface of local lakes. There, “Bukavac” waits for its victims, readying sharp fangs and six clawed arms. After the bloody deed is done, the creature howls through the night, planting dread in the hearts of local farmers.
But what if Bukavac doesn’t need lakes to prey on humans? Stories about this monster continue to circulate among people across Eastern Europe, from the Adriatic towards the Baltic Sea. Perhaps you will meet this beast lurking behind a dark corner in a crowded metropolis, ready to feast on fresh human flesh…
Among the thaumaturges, Bukavac presents itself as a difficult creature to tame, but pure ferocity makes it a powerful ally in a world brimming with violence.
Bukavac - the embodiment of brutality
The discerning see quickly that there’s much more to Bukavac than brute force and terrifying appearance. On a deeper level, it’s a manifestation of a punishment for an unforgiven deed.
