The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

anyway this game is basically a giant "interactive" planetarium, it's not really a sandbox game so if you're looking to float around in space and look at pretty things this game's for you. if that's not what you're looking for then you should prolly check out Universe Sandbox or something idk. this game is definitely for me though.

SpaceEngine is a game that will take you on an incredible journey through the universe. It’s a space simulator that offers an incredibly realistic experience, with stunning graphics and attention to detail that will leave you breathless.
The game is a true masterpiece, offering up a vast open world to explore, with a variety of celestial bodies to choose from and a range of missions to complete. The game is a new breed of space simulator that combines the best of astronomy, physics, and gaming, and it plays like the developers used the most upvoted nostalgia posts on Reddit as a blueprint.
The game is a staggering technological achievement, with a hybrid of procedural generation and real-world data that make it feel like you’re really exploring the universe.
The game is also compatible with VR headsets, which adds another layer of immersion to the experience. If you’re looking for a game that will take you on an adventure through the cosmos, SpaceEngine is the game for you
TLDR: Best software/game on Steam and the entirety of internet.

I could spend hours listening and watching the main menu screen - but... seriously...
If you are not into science, If you do not want to spend some time learning how to use the advanced photography techniques, if you don't want to customise your controls and learn in depth what is happening, If you are are an achievement hunter, if you want to fly around and just kill things, if you want to play a space shooter or a game in general... this is not for you.
That being said: Enough of this, returning to space...
Five Stars... Excellent Simulator (the pro version upgrade - is next on the purchase list)

If you want to feel perspective, download this game, and look away from earth at the stars, realizing you could click any one of the countably infinite little dots on your screen and discover a new planet, some life, a crazy view, or something you couldn't even imagine.
Then, start moving slowly to the center of the milky way galaxy, and as stars fill the heavens you'll realize you haven't begun to see anything yet.

I STRONGLY, STRONGLY suggest this simulator for anyone, adults or kids, that have anxiety issues or needs things to calm them down.
Again, I'm unsure of how accurate the layout of the map is (I can verify that our solar system is accurate, but outside of that, I'm truly unsure), but I would also suggest this be used as an educational tool. Even with inaccuracies in universe mapping, it can still help with scale representation and galaxy setups, etc.
Last but not least, I think it would be awesome if there were actual objectives in the simulator (maybe there is and I just can't find them). The sim is well worth pretty much any price tag already, but this could add some additional entertainment value to it. I hope to see add-ons as I truly do love this sim, but I don't even know what could be added on except missions or objectives.
I have a pretty high end PC and it runs perfectly on my rig, not sure how it would run with less specs as it's ginormous.

Galaxies far far away
A simulation of the entire universe developed by one person in Russia and, for that, it's really fascinating. It plays like a game made by a big studio and deserves a lot more attention than it has gotten. Most of the galaxies, planets, stars, moons, comets (and so on) are randomly generated (while feeling like they are modelled after real ones) but of course there are also a lot of real galaxies with familiar things to discover. The objects are all dynamic, with their own orbits and rotations, phenomena like black holes and neutron stars can be discoverd but a lot of ordinary events (like watching planets orbit around stars) are also enjoyable to watch. Be prepared to take screenshots of every interesting system you come across, and there is a lot to come across. The game looks even better than the screenshots on the steam page and offers a lot of visual customisation. Effects like gravitational lensing, accretion discs and planetary rings are masterfully done. This is the sort of game where you are constantly distracted by something and end up spending many hours taking in the stunning sights of the universe.
Earlier versions of the game are still available for free on the developer's website if you are unsure whether this sort of game/simulation interests you, they don't have the full catalogue of features the steam version has and are not receiving new updates, but they still offer most of the full game's features.
This game is well worth the 20 Euros, if you are interesting in space stuff this is a no-brainer to pick up.

This gave me what I wanted out of Universe Sandbox, but didn't get. I LITERALLY used this to help me reproduce and plan a photo shoot with my telescope. I used this software to prove I COULD see them side by side.
don't believe me? Here's what I took based on what this game helped me see.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/vg2t7ayudjxvzpk/BodesAndCigarDSS.jpg?dl=0
And the software was right, i could just barely squeeze it in. I have a lot of work to do in taking good photos, but I thoroughly enjoyed what this process included.
Great game, and hope to see it get even more robust, as some things aren't listed (veil nebula, for example).

It is totally worth $25 USD and I even got it on sale today for $19.99. The Nebulae are volumetric and actually look great compared to the horrible shapes for the older version. Planets have way more surface detail, however keep in mind that you will need a more powerful computer to run it. The HDR and Auto Exposure modes are perfect for different shots. The HDR has better overall visual clarity and a wide dynamic range. The Auto Exposure mode is realistic in a way to if you are looking at a bright planet, you won't see dim stars next to it. Objects are much more accurate, and if you have the paid version you will keep getting updates and support. Also not to mention the volumetric rings are phenomenal!! If you were questioning upgrading such as I was, just go for it. Trust me, the second you load up the game you'll be impressed!

Do I recommend it? Oh, you bet. But a note for anyone considering it, it's less of a game than it is software. If you want to play something like this that's more of a game, Universe Sandbox is closer to that - albeit also not *quite* a game. Even so, game or not, I absolutely recommend this for the experience, if nothing else.

1. Increase the maximum speed for the timescale. Currently the maximum only lets you pass by a couple hours per second. What I would REALLY like is if you could make it go so fast that you could see planets go around their orbits.
2. Some known celestial bodies have some inaccurate properties, (e;g, 55 Cancri e being a gas giant when it is most likely rocky and Kepler-22b being mainly rocky when it is almost certainly an ocean planet) I don't mean to be a Karen and this is BY FAR not the dev's biggest priority but it would be neat.
That's it. The dev probably won't see this, but it's good to share a good review.

This game is an amazing space simulator that includes over 10k real galaxies and over 100k real stars. The game also procedurally generates stars and planets to make up for the parts of space we haven't yet discovered.
The game also looks beautiful, the lighting and exposure control can actually produce some convincingly photorealistic images of space.
There are also many small attentions to detail that I appreciate, like needing to go at the planet's or star's escape velocity in order to leave it's surface. Each planet can also be landed on with their own terrains, be it lakes, oceans, mountains, or craters.
And since the last time I played was around 2018, there have been many new additions that I have yet to try (flight simulator for one), and I'm looking forward to see what new things the game will include in the future.
All in all, this is a great space simulator and a definite must-buy for any space lovers out there.

There are endless possible discoveries in this simulation, observable through varying alien atmospheres on or off any planetary surface, or adrift anywhere in space.
Some of my favorite examples are:
- Finding yourself in the shadow of the rings on a ringed planet.
- Viewing an eclipse by a very small moon both from below and above.
- Discovering the tracks of massive boulders that have left a network of trails on some moons.
- Seeing what the dark side of a moon looks like as light begins to graze its surface.
- Small black holes and supermassive planets in binary orbits.
- The distortion of reality within and near a black hole.
- The scale of particle jets emitted from supermassive blackholes.
- Zooming to human scale on alien bodies then taking in 30+ mile high cliffs and mountains.
- Finding your first water world and riding the massive waves.
- Finding planets or moons with life.
This existential crisis simulator will allow you to be fully immersed in the true scale of reality we take for granted. The vastness of the void may be overwhelming for those who have never pondered it -- but imagine feeling like you are standing still moving at the speed of light at the galactic scale, or better yet -- feeling like you aren't moving at a light year per second in the universal scale. So you speed up to 10+ million light years per second to travel between galaxies -- only to be overwhelmed by the millions upon millions of stars in each one -- each with a host of planets and countless moons. This spatial extent we can comprehend, but time is harder-- but the same holds for time. In both, we are so small and short we essentially do not even exist. Obviously, though, we know we do -- so don't let this knowledge fool you into thinking nothing matters (as I've heard others say), because your life still matters to you and those around you. Be content knowing there is whole universe of possibilities out there no matter how things turn out here.
A must have experience for VR owners.

VR user here and I am in tears, This game is absolutely terrifying and unspeakably beautiful at the same time.
Playing this took my breath away in Holy fear when I suddenly realized that I was leaving my galaxy behind and was now soaring on into the great beyond. I felt as if I had just died (not kidding) and nothing in this world mattered anymore, only what kind of life I had lived. 10/10 it will put the holy fear of God in you and it will give you a transformative perspective.
P.S. This is the very reason why I invested in VR in the first place, to experience what few humans have ever experienced. The only comparable experience would be shrinking down to the cellular and atomic levels and view the world from that perspective.
P.P.S. Seeing that this game is early access really excites me, I've gotten more than my money's worth already, I can hardly imagine what more can be added to this project.

SpaceEngine is not a game. SpaceEngine is not a simulator. SpaceEngine is not a virtual reality...
Because SpaceEngine is all of the above. It can be both anything and everything you want it to be.
I have followed this game's development for years and years, and still even own the 0.9.8.0 version (what I've currently named as SpaceEngine Legacy in my library). The sights in this are awe-inspiring.
Whether it be standing on the ground on Earth, or attempting to reach the far ends of the Observable Universe, there really is a lot to see, and it's more to take in than you could in your entire lifespan.
From the icy lakes and the cold, cold winds of a ringed terra, to the scorched gas giant of a dying star. From the little space shuttle parked in orbit next to the International Space Station, to the massive starship warping across space on its distant voyage. From the unbelievable rotation speed of a neutron star, to the binary system slowly swallowed by a nearby black hole.
The Universe is the limit. So why don't we take a minute to sit back, relax, and just truly appreciate everything, both intriguing and terrifying, about space.
We're sitting at home on our little computer. And it'll be millennia before we as a species will even come remotely close to visiting other stars. But thanks to SpaceEngine, is there really anything stopping us from going out there for ourselves?

I've been a fan of Space Engine for a really long time, way before it was released on Steam. I was blown away by it back then and I still am today. I mean, a game that generates the ENTIRE Universe for you to explore. In 1:1 scale. As accurately as possible with real world data, and using procedural generation for the unknown parts of our Universe. That's just madness. Adding even more to that madness, is that the game allows you to land on every single object. And the game is going to generate terrain for you (unless you land in a black hole, try it, it's fun xD). This terrain is generated again, based on real world data or the game fires up its procedural generator to make some really interesting planets and moons for you to explore.
I don't play it often, but whenever I do, I feel very relaxed. Jumping from star to star, system to system, galaxy to galaxy. Always wondering, what will I find next? That's the true beauty of this game.
I've called Space Engine a game. But it's not really a game. It's an experience, and a very unique one.
And what's absolutely awesome is that the single developer who has been working on this title for all these years (who now has a team, which is extra awesome), is still updating the game. I'm truly excited for every new release of Space Engine.
If you are even remotely interested in space exploration or maybe you just need a good zen game, Space Engine will provide you with many hours of that.

Space Engine it's the best universe simulator game.
There are 2 options play it as a normal game or like I did, play it in VR.
In normal mode it's more easy manage the console but it's more awsome in VR and see the stars by yourself traveling in the universe.
Seems pretty acurate all so it's a really good simulator, you even can land in the surface of the planet and check the sky and see what stars are outhere in diferent planets of your choice.
In the video only you can see the normal version but you can apply mods and see detailed versions of each planet and see exactly how can be when you land on the planet.

From my knowledge, everything in our night sky is presently highlighted as accurately as possible, even the sh*t you cant see with the naked eye. Everything outside of that is procedural generated. Billions of galaxies with their own billions of stars...it's an astronomy nerds wet dream. Hats off to the Dev bc you can really find some remarkable worlds with the procedural generation here. You'll find alot of repetitive star systems, that's expected in our universe, but for me it's about exploring and finding the hidden gems. That's what SE is to me. That's it, that's all you do. There aren't any quest or missions, you don't answer to anyone, just explore the universes.
It's just a relaxing a*s game meant to relax your a*s.

-Able to import your own 3D models and fly them around (obviously take a bit more tinkering than just that),
-Create your own planets, solar systems, galaxies,
-Able to do those two things in full scale and photorealistic graphics.

The developper is really attentive to the remarks of the community, and pushes updates regularly.
The game is really well coded, and runs fine on lower-end hardware.
The sound ambiance is calm and fits the game incredibly well.
Fun fact : I recently came across a scientific study that used Space Engine to teach a software to recognise a planet in any situation, using the least energy possible.
