Main problem: You need to learn where the enemy appears in each map and then check that you get the first shoot. This was ok back in the SSI PG times, but today this is just poor game design.
I even tried the DC - I really wanted to like it.

Welcome to Fantasy General 2.
Here's how the Developers EXPECT you to play the game.
Move a unit.
Save
Move a unit
Save
Move a unit
Save
Move a unit.
Save.
Move a Unit.
Save.
Attack with a unit
Save
Attack with a unit
Save
Attack with a unit
Save.
And you HAVE to do it.. you dont.. you lose. Because EVERY move, EVERY attack has to be PICTURE PERFECT.. or your campaign is over before it even starts. You lose a unit? You cant complete the campaign. EVERYTHING about this game is designed to ONLY be completed on PERFECT runs. Or you reload and start all over again.
This is shitty game design wrapped in nostalgia goggles.
Wish I could get my money back...

I did not expect much when buying this and it pleasantly surprised me in every way.
- The Good:
- Decent content even without DLC
- Meaningful choices and campaign paths, adding replayability
- Very nice unit/hero upgrades and gear
- Very well thought out game and battle system; not overly complex but still never too easy
- You can explore each map for treasure locations or you can finish it quick and get bonusses that way, and even try both
- Looks good
- Distinct variety of combat roles for units and heroes (ranged, melee, tank, atrillery, flying, scouts, hidden, all with different damage types)
- Immersive (for lovers of strategy and fantasy alike)
- Okay music, though it gets repetitive
- The Bad:
- Nothing much except I would welcome some more races to recruit from (I got about 4 sources of troops, I know there are more through choices), adding more variety to the army roster
- Some maps are cluttered with difficult terrain (mountains, swamps, forests etc.) crawling your units to a halt and making it a tad tedious
I liked this more than some of the WW2 games from Slitherine, because the fantasy setting gives ample opportunity for gear, upgrades and unit diversity.

Tactical RPG:
- Heroes level up, spend skill points on a skill tree. Units also level up, getting bonuses as they do. All units persist from scenario to scenario.
- Unit positioning matters a ton. Units can support each other and to rain plays a big factor.
- Maps are dense. Expect a few large battles per map rather than several insignificant engagements.
- Choice based narrative. Several options for how to shape a story that isn't the selling point but is engaging.
- EXP Is much more strategic. All units within a three hex radius of a killed enemy unit get EXP. No more boring juggling of who gets the kills.
War Game:
- Great resource management. Resources can be spent buying units, upgrading units, training units, and preserving EXP for units that suffer casualties.
- Diverse unit roster where every unit serves a purpose. Lots of strategies for how to build an army.
- Unlike most war games (the reason I rarely play them) moving is rarely a chore. I hate spending multiple turns moving across an open field just to get to the point where I can actually do something interesting. Not the case in Fantasy General 2. Since maps are so dense I'm always analyzing where to go, who to attack, what objectives to go after.
- Missions are challenging. Good variety in the objectives and layouts. Rewards creative thinking.
- Unit supply cap increases gradually and at a good pace. Rewards good long-term planning of squad composition.
Out of the 20 hours of played so far, I've been bored for maybe 10 minutes. I can't say that about very many games. The only downside is FG2 doesn't fall neatly into a singles genre. But I think anyone who likes tactical RPGs like Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy tactics or turn-based tactical games like XCOM 2 should at least download the free prologue. It's not nearly as in depth or good as the main campaign but it is a decent sampling.

The combination of game mechanics are absolutely great. The mixture of battles, army management, unit and hero upgrading, exploring and looting is great and very addictive.
Coupled with a really good story and excellent and often funny script writing. Yes it is primarily text based but, that has its plus side in having the more reflective nature of reading a book rather than watching a movie (and it is much better than what you get in AAA titles like Total War Warhammer). I can only conclude that those who have criticized the story in other reviews, primarily focus on Nobel prize winning literature as their reference point... The material in this game is good enough as the basis for a great blockbuster movie that would be much better than the majority of the tripe that comes out of Hollywood…
The atmosphere that is conjured up in the game is a wonderfully creative fusion of Norse and Celtic mythology, some Ancient Roman flavors, mixed with more fantastical fantasy elements.
This is all enhanced by the great graphics, animations, artwork, music, and sound.
If you like war games, turn based games, fantasy etc you will love this. I bought it on sale for around $27 but definitely worth the full asking price!

Since there's no base building, your army is the core of the game. It's made up of heroes, regular units, and mercenaries. Heroes are unique units with powerful skills, regular units have a leveling tree and can specialize in a range of roles, and mercenaries are only employed on the map which they're hired. You can make an army any way you like and there's no one way to complete a map. There's enormous depth and replayability - I'm at 60 hours and roughly halfway through the campaign but I tend to play extremely thoroughly. Someone less thorough could probably finish the campaign in 30-40 hours.
Although FG2 has lots of content, it does lack cutscenes and levity which makes the content feel dry. The gameplay can also be pretty brutal for casuals, so this is not a game intended to appeal the masses. The tutorials could really be much better. Though there are tooltips on about everything, what's needed are simple missions to clearly demonstrate the proper use of unit and terrain types. I want to see tutorial missions added to the game to smooth the learning curve.
My biggest gripe is all the stuff that's left unexplained, some intentionally. This is a mistake in my opinion and makes the game frustrating for first time players. Many dialogue choices affect the game in significant ways that aren't apparent at all. For example, at certain points in the game you are given 3 dialogue options and each one has a significant effect on the game, but the effect isn't explained at all or hinted at. Why? I would have liked it if the devs included hints/icons for dialogue choices and minimap positions of ruins/shrines. It takes nothing away from the game and means less time spent reloading earlier saves.
Despite it's flaws, the gameplay of Fantasy General II is really masterful and plays like an AAA studio game. There is so much depth and content here for fans of the strategy genre. I love the unit design and building my army to explore the map and conquer the enemy for victory in battle. Yes, I would have liked more simple QOL additions, tutorials, and hints but I'm not deducting a large number of points for that. And yes, cutscenes like a Blizzard game would've been nice, but this studio doesn't have the budget and staff of Blizzard so that's really not something which they can control and I think a direct comparison is unfair. For that reason I'm not factoring this into my final score.
All said and done, after 60 hours I rate the game 8/10 and my recommendation is to pick up the base game or sale, because there are more campaigns available with DLCs. You can even play Fantasy General II Prologue free to get a feel for the gameplay (be aware the difficulty of the prologue ramps up much more quickly than the base game though).

Pros:
-Decent graphics, I like the UI of the unit progression trees
-Interesting unit variety and cool setting
-The gameplay feels solid and consistent
Cons:
-The sound design is bland at best and grating at worst. Music is very repetitive and uninspired.
-While unit variety is nice for 1 faction, there are only 2 factions to play
-Story seemed hammy and didn't capture my interest (this very much comes down to personal preference)
-My biggest issue: while gameplay is solid, consistent and has very few bugs, it offers nothing new or exciting for me. The game doesn't offer me an incentive to play it instead of Fire Emblem, Disgaea or other similar turn-based tactical RPGs. If the gameplay was the same but the presentation was impressive, it could maybe compete, but as things stand the game feels mediocre compared to what else is on the market, especially considering the price point. Maybe it's because I only got through 3 hours, but these first 3 hours really weren't able to keep me interested if there was a good part to get to later on in the game.

Do I think there's still room for improvement? Also yes.
PROs:
- nice graphics (the terrain is really beautiful and the units fit in well)
- the campaign seems good (OK-ish story, not too boring, but doesn't keep you on your toes either)
- the unit skill trees seem quite varied and the units themselves are interesting
- the map design is also varied, definitely seems like you're exploring the world map, fighting your way through different regions
- I like the fact that you're offered a few story decisions every now and then, which then directly impact the course of the battles
MEHs:
- UI (the tooltips could be much better, explaining more of the game mechanics, the buttons could use a bit more detail and not look like they're from 15 years ago)
- the maps seem pretty small
- the resources used to upgrade the units are very limited and searching the maps left and right for some scrap and then having it behind an RNG just adds insult to injury
- there definitely needs to be a marketplace system (e.g. buy one set of armor for 100 gold)
CONs:
- overall value for money, at least at full-price
- only comes with two factions, although the campaign has plenty of missions
- controlling villages and towers doesn't provide the tactical advantage one would expect; perhaps some villages should drop some resources every couple of turns (e.g. one set of weapons for every 3-4 turns you control it)
- sounds are next to nothing
Been playing Battle for Wesnoth for a while now (long before it made its way to Steam) and the similarities are obvious. FG2 has nicer unit trees IMO and much, much better terrain graphics, while Wesnoth definitely seems more tactical by granting income and healing bonuses inside villages.
The base game should be $20 and DLC should be priced at $10 each. This ain't an AA(A) title and the price should reflect this.
Overall: 7/10 with good potential for raising this score.

Imagine locking threads and claiming that something does not exist when in that same thread another dev said existed, lol.
the game itself is decent, nothing special, but don't buy it at full price, or any dlc, check out the digital sites and get it for 1/3 the price, more of a reasonable price for the game and dlcs.
Anything from slitherine/matrix store/publishing used to be quite niched which is why in the past they could get away with simple graphics/mechanics in games that's not even voice casted for more money then a tripple A title. However that time is long gone. Adapt to a growing market or keep losing sales and making desperate decisions like forcing intrusive ads on your customers, in a pointless launcher that just pi**es people off in the end.

What It is missing is a strategic layer. I was hoping you would build some kind of civilization / faction by making or capturing cities, choosing what to produce, etc...
Instead this is a super linear campaign, with no strategic layer at all. In between missions you can only recruit a very limited type of troops with some gold you get. To upgrade them, you need weapons and armor, which can not be bought, only found on the skirmish maps.
Anyway, the pure skirmish game play was not interesting enough to hold my interest, especially since you can only play one faction, barbarians, in this fantasy game.
If pure, tactical game play appeals to you, then you might like this game.

Where series like XCOM and Age of Wonders have evolved the turn-based tactics genre, Fantasy General is firmly stuck in the 90s. Which is good news for people who think the latest installments in the aforementioned two series got too complex, but for me I got bored really quickly of Fantasy General 2, despite having played the original back in the day quite a lot.
If I compare it to Age of Wonders - Planetfall, it falls short on EVERY facet: The units are more bland, the music is repetitive, there is a lot less to customize, there is a FAR less content when compared to the same amount of money, you have less tactical options, the AI is less intelligent and the meta-game between the tactical battles is FAR less involved and interesting.
I simply can't recommend this game over others in its genre, especially since the price is the same. You're better off buying Planetfall, Phoenix Point or any of the two XCOMs. If you're looking for high fantasy, I can recommend Age of Wonders 3. It's long in the tooth by now, but still in my opinion more fun than FG2.

Pros:
Interesting story line
Hero character progression enjoyable
No crashes/bugs found
Cons:
Steep learning curve (game provides very little guidance)
Limited resources leave no room for experimentation
Enemy receives unlimited resources (especially mana)
Enemy overpowered in general
Movement can become tedious
Summary:
Wanted to like this game, but it's too hard to enjoy. Other reviews recommend save scumming for better results; if that's what it takes to play the game, the game isn't balanced well. More frustrating than fun.

Is it overpriced? Kinda. Yes.
Is it good? Yes. Lots of different big maps allow for plenty of real life tactics : from pincer maneuvers and sweeping to ambushing and guerilla tactics. However, these are not taught in game ! You have to already possess some basics of military tactics knowledge. Otherwise, you will just get frustrated when you constantly die during direct assault.
Piece of advise 1: choices matter ! Decisions made in the beginning of the game can make game very-very difficult later in the campaign and force you to restart from the beginning.
Piece of advise 2: having a well rounded army is difficult. Better decide on your main tactics from the beginning (guerilla tactics with berserkers or more direct approach with axemen, for example).
Also, I had to restart each mission very often since I discover more about the map while playing.
CONCLUSION :
Game is a must-have for fans of turn-based tactical games in spite of its price ! (buy it on discount)
Nevertheless, having to restart missions and reload saves makes game a little bit annoying and might not be for everyone.

Fantasy General 2 has none of this. You're locked to one boring general unit who has a few paths to spec in but it's all pretty boring. You get to ride a bear, sure, but you feel very weak overall. The Barbarian faction that you're locked into is very boring with poor unit variety and even poorer viability. You learn early on that about 80% of the unit advancements are useless forcing you to focus on two or three unit lines. Unlike the original, there is no reason to keep a balanced army. I got one of those Imperial units which you can't hire normally from an event and I looked at their upgrade tree. REAL archers (not this slinger bull), advanced heavy cavalry, necromancers! Diverse and interesting units. All those things you want with the BASE game, but can only get if you buy the expansion and play that campaign. What do the barbarians get, Berserkers, Thanes, Shield Maidens. How very... ever Norse/Barbarian game ever. Maybe that's unfair, but with how much the gaming industry has forced Skyrim in my face for almost 10 years I don't care. I'm so sick and tired of reading and hearing the word Thane. Items felt weak and meaningless and the story. You spend half the time running around like an idiot not knowing what's going on and as such, you end up not caring. I didn't care for the story because it took so long to tell me what I should be caring for.
Sure, some of these problems may be fixed if you put more time into the game, but it just felt so uninteresting and disappointing I'm not sure I want to put more time into it. I guess it depends on if I can get a refund or not. You know Steam. Oooww, I played the game for five hours instead of two. *sighs* Look, if you're coming into this game brand new with no expectations I guess it's a decent strategy game when it's on sale as I do think this game is overpriced for what it does offer. If you're an old fan and want that old Fantasy General feeling with a modern twist like me, don't bother. That's my opinion at least.

Game mechanics are a bit more in depth compared to some other TBS games but not overdone, it's worth having a closer look how everything works. Some parts are not all that obvious i.e. my personal highlight armour piercing working also with magic damage. :) There is some puzzle to be solved which i like and if you get some practice you will be able to find some really interesting and powerful combinations of skill or spell uses and tactics.
Also was quite fond of the looks and immersion the game world, story and units offer.
FG2 is a game i can recommend, especially if you like the combination of Fantasy and TBS.

But despite those complaints, Fantasy General 2 offer many other things that can force me to give it a thumb up. It has decent graphics, smooth animations, soundtrack from the original Fantasy General (make me feel nostalgic), non linear campaign where each choices has consequences, lot of heroes and unit roosters to be fielded, trained, upgraded, and equipped with tons of artifacts; and surprisingly this game has good AI, combined with terrain bonuses/penalties, they add more depth to the tactic and strategy.
A must buy for every fans of turn-based strategy genre. 8/10

About 1.5 to 2 hours into this game, I was ready to uninstall. I just wasn't feeling it yet. What I realized was that for some reason I was thinking I was simply going to open each new scenario and easily steamroll the enemies. As far as I can tell, that's now how this game works. Sure, that should be obvious. But I wasn't in that frame of mind. Once I shifted my mental space, I dumped 20+ hours over a few days!
The highlights of this game for me are unit selection and development. You can hire base units which you can then upgrade along several different paths, e.g., do you want your basic spear infantry to upgrade into mobile hit-and-run cavalry or straight up tanky spear formations (who even provide armor auras to friendly units at top tier). Do you want your basic sword infantry to turn into ranged slingers, shock berserkers, and on and on.
As you'd expect, these units function very differently and crafting your army how you envision it has been a blast.
And I've not even touched on hero development or loot.
One potential negative, depending where you're coming from, is that some of the scenarios can take time. It's not uncommon for me to spend 1.5 - hours on a scenario where I'm at in the game right now (and I'm not even that far). Maybe I'm a slow player, but my point is that sometimes the battles take quite a while to finish. Of course you can always save and exit.
One final note, another reviewer suggested play on iron man. On one hand, YES! (and it's the only way I've played). At the same time, I've started over several times due to making mistakes and I could see home some players would rather re-load than restart.

This game is not bad, but it could be so much more. Just like Sanctus Reach was not bad, but it wasn't as good as the old Chaos Gate. In the exact same manner, this game is good, but not as good as the old Fantasy General.
There are only two factions and the only thing that has been significantly improved are the overall graphics. I wills till play the campaign to the end, just like I did with the last game from Slitherine I played (Sanctus Reach), but I regret buying this. I recommend using your money on finding the original instead.

I've played a lot of strategy games since the good old DoS classics, and this is bit of a gem for the simple reason, its both very challenging AND fair. Fair, because each time I've wiped failed, I can see what I did wrong.
Sometimes its due to lack of game knowledge given my low hours, but most of the time I could've done something better - more scouting, less greed for kills, played more conservative ect.
(playing the DLC campaign on Veteran difficulty with iron maiden enabled for reference)
So aside from the welcome challenge, what is there to like?
The graphics are nice. They aren't amazing but things still look good, and even potato rigs should be able to handle this game.
Story is delivered mostly through text boxes, but there is one.
The resource game is quite strong, not only do you need gold (to hire units, mercenaries, upgrade units and hire leveled replacement soldiers for your squads instead of taking an XP hit for hiring free rookies), you want all manner of other goodies like weapons, armour and mana that is needed to upgrade specific troop paths depending on what you want.
Every spend feels like it has impact and importance on the long run, as your army carries over mission to mission, like the original Homeworld, except units also gain experience, so every loss really matters.
The variety of enemies is quite impressive, and the units that the player can recruit (depending on their starting hero) might seem limited, but with upgrade paths you have many options.
And you can find or be rewarded new units during missions, which, of course have their own upgrade paths ensuring endless army compositions and variety.
Overall I'm really enjoying the game, and I strongly rate the DLC which adds many new units, and most important, procedurally generated campaign.

I like the scarcity of resources that you accumulate to upgrade your army, which makes me painfully and carefully consider how I should spend them to hone certain aspects of my army rather than going through and rubber stamping units in chronological order.
I find the missions themselves to be challenging to the point that when victory is achieved I feel a smug satisfaction, but not so challenging that I find myself save scumming.
I'm a sucker for turn based games anyhow that I can pick up and put down at a moments notice. If you like that sort of gaming too, I think you'd enjoy this one.
