Nee, Firaxis lass mal.

Wer Gothic kennt.

The mechanics are the exact same as XCOM 2, except for turns that are based on the timeline. It's a bit odd how a game that seems very fast paced feel so sluggish, slow, and hate to say it--boring. There are no snipers or miniguns, I get that since the fights are mostly indoors or small scale. On the other hand, research and base progressions are limited to 1 researcher at a time, compare that to the possibility that you can recruit more scientists or engineers.
I can't really recommend this game as a long time fan of XCOM, but probably this can scratch that itch for a little while.

An interesting take on the series, a massive step backwards in terms of interface and graphics. Basically a low-budget XCOM game. Which is fine, because it knows that's what it is, doesn't try and do more.

The whole breach concept is IMO really bad. A quicker combat X Com could be fun, but this just feels like a bad puzzle game with RNG. Massive RNG is especially bad as any deaths mean you lose, and even bad wounds mean your char may be useless for long periods. Very quickly tactical combat gets super boring. The usual X Com goodies like Research Trees and base building and etc are either stripped down to almost nothing or removed completely, so I can't see wanting to play it through again.
I would like a story based game in the X Com world and it doesn't need to do all the gameplay, but this one is not it sadly.

After a few runs of this game on various difficulties, I have to say this is a poor follow up to XCOM 2, even if it is largely a game to help world build. I can definitely see where they wanted to make a spiritual successor to XCOM Apocalypse, while preserving the tactical functionality of the new series.
Unfortunately for me, the game suffers from a very weak story, poor pacing, and characters that are largely stereotypes, gimmicks, and unremarkable.
The story locks you into a very procedural pace, with little room for strategic flexibility. You have to pick and choose your missions, often with little relative gain and tons of risk and consequences. Like XCOM2, you basically start off dirt poor, with little equipment and personnel. The difference here is, while the intention of XCOM2 was to get the player used to losing battles, equipment, and people, in hopes of winning overall on the strategic level, this game enforces the mentality people actually attributed to XCOM2 - don't lose your people at all or you can't win. This game essentially makes this mandatory - if you lose anyone in battle - you LOSE.
Who runs an agency like this?? One of your field agents gets shot in the leg, bleeds out and dies, and your chief just says 'Well boys pack it in, this city is done for!'
The missions somehow feel even more repetitive and inflexible than vanilla XCOM2 due to the structure of breach, the lack of equipment you can get your hands on, and the punishing mechanics of unrest and anarchy. The game gives you VERY few options, especially on higher difficulties, to mitigate or deal with districts or the city as a whole, unless you can slog your way through missions with really tough odds. Even worse is the lack of breathing room required to allow agents to be tactically flexible - I assume the developers wanted to emphasize the idea of having to stay mobile and use your abilities to stay on top of the enemy, but what it leads to is a much more manic form of mission where you may end up simply needing to overwhelm the enemy with abilities rather than actually be tactical. I can barely find a use for the now nerfed overwatch because people need to be firing or moving most of the time, while characters like Blueblood essentially become stationary turrets during some mission because it is tactically infeasible for him to give up two shots simply to move at all. Just stack aim and special ammo on him and mow down opponents. At least XCOM2 forced you to make effective use of cooldowns and movement, even with snipers.
As for the characters, they feel like an extension of the Marvel formula, where everyone is whimsical, quippy, and doesn't seem concerned with the very real sociopolitical issues and violence they are supposed to be experiencing on a daily basis. Its largely just jokes, banter, and luls while you gun down hundreds of weirdos. This feels like the 'Wild Wasteland' version of XCOM.
And then the game basically just....ends. It was some shady organization pulling the strings of all the factions in the city. Never seen that plot point used before! Best part is the 'Final' villain is so generic and unremarkable, I accidentally killed him thinking he was just a regular enemy, because he was SKINNED like one.
3/10. If only there was a Long War mod for this game with more factions and a better strategic/tactical layer.

This will be my very first XCOM game I haven't finished. I keep trying to will myself to continue, wondering how long it will take me to get through, but it seems like more of a chore at this point so why bother. I really hope that this is a one off and none of the future games go in the same direction, otherwise it'll be the first time since I was a little kid that I don't buy an XCOM game.

Was a thoroughly engaging experience from start to finish. It takes place after the events of XCOM 2 and the scope is focused on a single city, City 31.
Gameplay loop is still mostly the same with mission deployment and the HQ where you train and research and buy stuff for your agents. Was pleasantly surprised how diverse the loadouts can be for your agents(grenades, utility items, weapon mods, various armor layers).
The one new addition to the gameplay loop is the Breaching phase where the agents enter the encounter. The characters here each have some specific actions they can take in addition to shooting and going straight for cover. Although for 80% of the game I had Cherub in my squad because of his shield(he has an ability which allows him to tank and absorb all incoming shots during the breach) and because he's the only real tank.
At your HQ you can train your agents at specific levels for permanent buffs which are usually passive things like extra movement speed and defense. Also if one agent gets particularly injured during a mission they'll get Wounds or a temporary debuff which you need to take care of for a few days. The stats can be a bit confusing, Dodge gives you the ability to take minimal damage when getting hit aka getting grazed while Defense reduces the actual chance of getting hit, weird.
Also you'll get the chance to expand your roster to have up to 8 Agents if I'm not mistaken, but you can't recruit everyone in one playthrough. Also when leveling up your Agents you'll get choices a few times, these are important as there's no option to respec them.
Story is mostly told through simple 2D animations and it's nice to see that your agents actually have personalities and they will interact with each other while in base. This also means that this time they're not so much classes as unique characters.
You take on 3 different factions which require some adapting to(i.e. some rely on robots while others on psionics), and it's on the lighter side, you're trying to unravel a murder plot and you as the Chimera Squad are approaching it through a process of elimination.
Judging by the look of the game they made the most of use of whatever funds they had for it, the cutscenes are bare bones 2D and there's a few pre-rendered ones as well. The voice acting is also nice though.
I really recommend it to anyone who likes X COM and turn-based stuff in general. 8.5/10
P.S. When you start a mission you'll receive a prompt that some Agents are Idle, this is important, as you can assign Agents to do stuff like gather Intel or even speed up your research, which is something I only discovered when I was close to finishing it.

Only real thing missing from the XCOM experience is being able to truly develop your own squad. XCOM: Chimera Squad instead opts to give you pre-made characters with unique appearances, backstories and voice acting. It's fine, but it's much more gratifying to built a squad that is truly your own.
In conclusion I do very much recommend this iteration of XCOM. Both for existing XCOM players and for those that are new to the series.

Personally, I didn't enjoy any of it. It has its flair and charm but for the most part it just didn't work. Encounters are repetitive and predictable -- 3 phases of breaching, the last phase will have reinforcements depending on the overall objective, you will probably take damage no matter how tactical or clever you are and RNGesus will take the wheel for better or worse frequently. Damage has its own flair of RNG - you may have a 100% chance to hit and the game promises you can deal a killing blow - and yet you will do just one hit point less than you needed.
Squad members are fixed so forget customizability - and you can't really have them die, at least as far as I've gotten (not very far to be fair).
To each their own, but for me this formula just doesn't work and I hope the devs either reboot or ditch it entirely moving forward.

The turn order is an interesting mechanic and it made the small scale battles feel more tactical, but I wouldn't want this to replace the normal battle style in a full XCom game I don't think.
I didn't mind the characters (some people did I gather), having a mix of aliens and humans was certainly interesting. I wasn't too keen on the way new characters are drip fed with RNG mechanics. The lack of permadeath of characters lowers the stakes somewhat. If you fail to stablize a downed agent you insta-fail the mission. I prefer the XCom way of recruit as many as you want with permadeath personally.
I would have also preferred bigger battles, i.e. to take more than 4 agents. By the end of the game I had 1-2 agents permanently idle because they were all trained up and I had no foundry projects left to do, plus the spec ops were mostly worthless at that point.
I played through on normal, but for someone who has played other XCom games the strategic level was a bit too easy. I focused on getting my field teams up asap, not doing story missions until I had to etc. Kept expecting the difficulty to ramp up, but my city anarchy never went above 2 (and that only happened once, most of the game it was at zero).
Overall I enjoyed this XCom lite experience a lot and would recommend it. I may replay it one day but I don't think replay is as high as the mainline XCom games, which I guess is a given.

Tons of code, art assets and animations have been ported over from XCOM 2, this is not necessarily a bad thing but it contributes to the testing grounds feel that the game has. This leaves a bad impression when the game is $30AUD
Overall the game's ok but a small push in new assets would have benefited the game greatly.
Also, why did there have to be a 2k launcher?

There's been no updates for more than a year, other than one that forces you to launch through the 2k Launcher that doesn't want to work half the time, see other recent reviews for similar issues.
This game's idea of the breaching mode, and the per-unit turn is an interesting idea to switch up XCOM's formula works to an extent. Alas, the glitches from XCOM 2 carry over into this game, and with the new turn based style seem to multiply and become even buggier, which sucks because this games getting no patches for those issues, nor is XCOM 2.
Your units being characters, and unable to die works for a spin off but the system isn't fleshed out whatsoever, units will become scarred from taking heavy damage on a mission, but will not change in appearance.
If you want to play XCOM, just buy 1 or 2 honestly, this game's not worth the mental and emotional usual effort it takes to play.

It's good, just not exactly the XCom you are looking for.
Longer Answer:
The game play is Xcom-like, but all aspects of it feel reduced for quick consumption. Smaller missions, smaller strategy, smaller customization, all wrapped up in a tone that... kind of does a disservice to the lore. It feel like a candy coated 90s sequel to a part 1 and part 2 violent dark 80s action movie duo.
Not all together unpleasant but certainly the black sheep of the trilogy.
In total for $20, it aint bad. It is different enough to not QUITE scratch my XCom itch completely but I still enjoy it.

GOOD:
+ Runs on older computers
+ Every character is unique in gameplay space
+ There are some character customization features
+ Missions have some variety
BAD:
- Too many minor bugs (drone animations taking forever, drones flying over building walls, ragdoll physics going haywire, missing enemy movements even when line of sight is clearly visible, enemies trying to take completely impossible shots etc.)
- Quality of cut scene videos is not very good
- UI system could use some overhaul (elements get lost, not enough info why something cannot be done)
- Mission difficulty varies way too much (even if mission briefing almost always says very difficult)
- Some characters are basically required for certain missions since their abilities are so much better than others

Anyway, it’s a fairly competent, even if a short and repetitive, romp using XCOM assets. Essentially expect a very elaborate mod of the base game, an XCOM-lite as many have dubbed it, and you won’t be disappointed. You get a bunch of small maps, some new enemies and an overpowered squad.
Really could’ve done with a bit more variety in mission objectives and better voice acting, though.

Yeah it's a good game but it's buggy and unpolished, some of the characters are annoying and bad at combat and the overall game feels like a shell of Xcom2
Don't do Iron man mode like I did because the bugs may cause you to get stuck
The world building is probably my favorite part and some characters are actually funny and interesting the overall plot wasn't too special but was enough to keep me playing.
If you love Xcom and Xcom world building this is a great game but if you aren't then I recommend just watching someone else play it.

Each squad member plays pretty differently, and unlocks new abilities (some of them amazing) as they level up and train. Especially mid-to-late game, you can use and abuse the abilities to make each squad member do a lot more in a typical turn than just move and shoot. I changed my mind multiple times about who my favorite and least-favorite characters were, which I think is a really good thing.
Encounters start with a breach, and then you're fully engaged in the fight. On the downside, you lose some of the suspense and creeping dread of classic XCOM...on the upside, you spend more time making tough choices in tense combat and less time on slowly creeping around the map setting up overwatch traps. Missions are quick and fierce.
I like the chat between squadmates and the lore, including some goofy touches (like BIG CRUNCH cereal ads) that remind me of Welcome to Night Vale. The game never sits you down and explains the backstory
- don't worry about it. The game also doesn't always do a great job of spelling out all the game mechanics, so you'll sometimes have to learn the hard way what abilities a new enemy type has. But it also gives you some leeway to recover - worst case, you restart the mission. At least until you amp up the difficulty and play on hardcore.
P.S. Trust me, don't pick Sacred Coil as your first investigation.

gonna be honest from XCOM 2 (I've only watched streams) this game is very convenient for new players trying to not get overwhelmed by what XCOM 2 brought to the table but by doing that they took alot of customization alot of different tactical advancement and simplified the entire game even gave you like at the beginning of missions like training wheels to do a breach that lets you get some easy kills (or miss) but besides all that i'm okay with this game not what i prepared myself mentally for but still an okay game HOWEVER gotta say 2k stop using that launcher it doesn't work and breaks almost every game we have now {Edit} So i've played alot of the game now for players that are new I suggest that you 1. If you want to feel like you put more effort into the end result go into the game hard difficulty immediately the because the being wounded mechanic barely feels like a handicap or even feels like it can be avoided so easily but it is possible to brick yourself early in the game if it is that bad of a debuff on specific characters but even then it's a strategy game c: 2.

Finished Xcom 2 and DLCS loved the game.
Finished Xcom Chimera Squad loved the game.
Compared to the other 2 the campaign is a bit short. It has many cool characters and good plot. It has 'action' moments more often than the other 2. I think the 'shortness' is compensated by the fact that you are always busy doing missions everyday unlike the other Xcoms.
The game focus on smaller maps with multiple 'encounters' that you have to pick which enemies you should take out first rather than scout/lure/ambush the enemy like on you usually do on the other ones. The agents are very unique and getting the right combination of agents make the game easy and smooth.
Characters development is fairly quick due to the game duration, less grind, right amount of fun. The hardest encounters were not as challenging as previous Xcoms, not that the game need to be hard to be fun but it felt quite epic to overcome almost impossible situations or have a team of unstoppable super soldiers.
It is worth to play all of them, it is the same genera but a bit different flavor. I will definitely replay Chroma Squad and eventually play again the other ones too.

Even the interface is too different; somehow simultaneously dumbed down and more complicated, very difficult to get used to. I gave it an hour and didn't enjoy it like I hoped I would. The idea of a squad of mixed humans, aliens, and hybrids is very interesting, and I like the sound of the story, but the other negatives outweighed the potential positives.

As such for fans of the old xcom (ufo) ones this will be more on the meh side. Everything in here is very limited in comparison.
All you do is fight missions, that are made out of 1 to 3 maps. You have so called breaches where you get a (random) choice of how to enter the map, with (random) bonuses and/or penalties. You just repeat that through the whole game.
To not die of boredom after an hour already they did add some aproximization of interlude Where you have to gather and juggle with 3 different resources of which 2 are of little to no value. Intel is by far the most important one. With intel you buy upgrades on the map, which then give you resouces once a week (you also get some from missions) and you spend them in the black market where you buy equipment that is equal or far superior to anything you research or find on missions.
There are 12 different units of which you can get only 8 per playthrough. They have the silly tree sistem 1/2/1/2/1 to give you the illusion of choice. The character wildly wary in strength and are in no way equal.
Story is barebones and leaves much to be desired, so if you play this for the story you will be dissapointed. Fighting is ok, but again compared to the old games its pretty basic. The story itself is a tiny bit different depending on which fraction you will chose to investigate first. So in theory you get 3 different stories but vriations are so tiny that i am not sure it warrants 3 playthroughs that it requires. It will be a chore by the end and I do mean a chore, bc the game on hardest difficulty is not exactly super hard. You can also save at pretty much every step to make it even more trivial ...
Anyway, its an ok game, if you are a fan of turn based new xcom like strategies and you played all of them already. If you prefer the old games and not the new ones, you might want to play those again unless you are really curious.

Okay this DLC was gifted to me so played it right off . A lot of the game play was changed a Boring breach starts every mission. your players are picked for you with no choice of type . seem to always be broke no weapon pick up . research is doubled if you don't assign one of your players and the players well you are short one so picking what they do is more important . I played with auto heal after battle . glad I did other wise would not gotten to last battle that is nightmare to win
the game gets boring after first few hours little bland story line .I did not enjoy the game wanted it to end after first few hours
recommend only for die hard XCOM fans even then hard pressed . I would get this as a bundle or 80% off not even worth 50% .
if I payed more then 5 bucks be pissed I got it free and struggled to like it
do't buy unless sale or bundled heavily discounted

Yes, I enjoyed the game on release, and it had the mayor bugs fixed
The gameplay innovation is nice and using the aliens is fun, the music is also really good, but almost all characters are forgettable, some balance feels weird, the rithm of the game is weird and even on the max difficulty it dosent feel like an Xcom level game.
For full price is a definite no (and thats why is a negative review). wait for a sale and if you are really desperate for more Xcom but you are feeling burn out by Xcom 2.
Even if Im giving it a negative review, the team behind this Xcom game did their best and I hope they learned alot from this entry, hope that in the next game they include the best from this one and forget or fix what went wrong

The big new addition, the 'Breach' mechanic, becomes old very fast and is repeated way too much in such a way that it breaks all pacing of the missions.
The banter between teammates feel forced and 'written' instead of organic and alive.
In the end I just couldn't force myself to continue playing past the first couple of hours.

I've tried to find something positive to it, but I'm really struggling - and I'm so sad, as I love the series. The gameplay feels like kids version of the first two games, the characters are positively irritating (I was actually frustrated to find I couldn't arrange an unfortunate death for them to replace with less grating stand ins), and as much as I want to - I can't get into the story.
It sort of feels like your fave TV show when the producers decide it needs to be remade for a younger, more attention deficit audience. Probably this would have been better suited for a free to play Iphone release or something...
Sorry... as much as I want to love all XCOM... this is just plain bad. :(

I enjoyed it as every other XCOM game. There are some great new ideas: breaching, alternating turns, operation management and insane 1-turn combos which can wipe out most enemies in a blink.
But in the end it suffers not only from bugs (some of them can make your missions impossible to finish), but from repetitivness too. There are 3 main missions and every single one has only one type/style of enemies, which really amplifies the repetition in this game.
XCOM: Chimera Squad definitely feels more like a standalone expansion than a full game. But I had fun. So that's the most important thing.

I just had to install it right away and play it. As a XCOM game tradition I started it as Ironman impossible for first game to feel the good old X-Com feeling before I move onto a more relaxing Story difficulty completion of this game.
I actually lasted over 3 weeks of in game days before I was wiped out from Ironman Impossible and it took me nearly 15 hours to complete the story difficulty game campaign. To be honest this is less of x-com type of game then a turn-based Breach&Clear or SWAT 3.
Story was very simple and direct but it made one mistake I really hate. Your in-game effort doesn’t mean anything to the main XCOM story line. You win but it doesn’t matter is the kind of story tell that I really hate. (FFXIII-2, Mass effect come to mind)
Game Play is actually pretty good a lot people get bored of constant Breach, Breach and Breach some more but each Breach Randomness does add some unique flavor to game. So It was interesting, boring then interesting again for me as I play on. There are a lot of small feature in item customization and special way to team work that you have to discover slowly.
Thing’s like using Shelter’s relocate ability and move enemy unit beside Godmother’s for close quarter reaction shot to trigger was smartly designed. There are a lot different unit synergies and item combination to discover.
Music and Graphics are nothing special but hold its weight on it’s own. Controls are just like XCOM 2 so It’s pretty decent also.
8/10 so it’s a little disappointing that’s not super x-com like but it’s not bad as a good quick fast-food game that you can play one or two breach level during your lunch break every day. A lot people think this game feels like x-com apocalypse as they are both single city based but to me it’s really nothing alike. This is just simply XCOM chimera squad, a new installment of the Serie and unique XCOM/Breach and Clear game.
For all my friend that tried this but giveup quickly. I suggest give it a chance and play some more. It might seems repetitive and boring at first, but it will slowly grow on you and you will like it more as you play more. It does get quite challenging more x-com like if you change difficulty level to higher.

I've been an X-Com fan ever since UFP Defense. Chimera Squad, although quite different, offers small combat engagements without the search/stealth element of recent iterations. Who remembers playing Terror from the Deep and spending a whole hour scouring the ship, just to find a lobster man in a locker somewhere?
Chimera Squad is a quick, personal and creative game. Many encounters are over within 2-3 rounds. The characters all have loads of personality and all have different abilities to unlock. This makes combat fun and creative as you develop your own style of play.
My A-Team consisted of Verge, Cherub, Terminal and Torque. Although many other combos also work very well. It was fun getting all characters to max level and unlocking all their funky abilities.
The characters also have some great dialogues between that you listen to while preparing for the next mission. My favourite was when Cherub was asking Terminal to look at his rash. Had me laughing out loud, so I won't spoil it here.
Easily recommended. I'll likely play again just to explore the characters that I didn't get to see (you only get 8 of 11 possibles in a play through).

The gameplay is a simple Xcom game, however, it has special units with unique personalities and abilities. This makes the game enjoyable in finding new ways to experiment with new units, however, the balancing is pretty bad and it is simple to break the game. I played on the 2nd hardest mode and it was still very simple to break the game.
There are many bugs that break the game. I encountered a bug where I couldn't move any units unless I loaded a last save. I experienced the game crashing a couple of times. And many things that are fairly minor. The problem with this is if I were to do an Ironman I wouldn't be able to complete it as some stuff just don't get fixed unless I restart the game or load a save.
20 dollars for this game is a great price, however, with the amount of problems that this game has I would recommend getting it on sale if possible.

Tends to be geared more towards the tactical battles rather than the strategic perspective vs. XCOM 1 & 2, but this game offers a faster pace for those just looking for a shootout.
Breaching is exhilarating at first, but can get tedious once you've done it for...12+ hours. Still, the game does its job well by using XCOM's best combat mechanics and giving it a new twist that makes it worth picking up for veterans and neophytes alike.

This write-up is based on my video review, which you can find here: https://youtu.be/Iw7jQj3e1NA
I was excited to try out XCOM: Chimera Squad. This small-scale project by veteran developers of XCOM 2 had a lot of promise on paper, but the execution leaves something to desire.
The most interesting idea Chimera Squad enacts is that of different breach points; different avenues of attack through which the squad members can gain a variety of advantages. Make an entrance through the main entryway to a room, you might have your pick of enemies to gun down, but the odds are, some of them will be alert and ready to take potshots towards you.Crawl through a vent, and every foe you shot is stunned by your fire, break through the windows of an office building and you might have extra movement during your first turn; or enter through the backway and you will have extra defense to begin with. There are other permutations, too, and these do make a difference. They give a certain freedom of approach, which is key to the Xcom formula.
The issue with this breach system is your inability to then pick where your characters take cover. In the opening few missions of the game, this is a mild annoyance at best; but as the enemies mount and their damage output and health-bars grow, this oversight becomes increasingly frustrating, until, about twelve hours in, I grew beyond annoyed with this. You see, unlike XCOM 2, where enemies grew tougher but at a pace that challenges you and forces you to adapt, use new strategies, here enemies grow bullet-spongy while the tools your squad has at its disposal do not grow at that same pace.
Plenty of the meatiest XCOM 2 foes make their return and it’s good to see the meaty lads but when you have so much less to cut them down with, this inevitably reaches a tipping point that bypasses challenging and ends up at irritating.
The second biggest weakness of this installment in the franchise is, perhaps, the removal of permanent agent death. That’s owed to imbuing them with personalities, making them react to the developing story—and while these craft a unique identity for Chimera Squad, the issue is, they do take away from the pleasure that comes with creating your own characters and enjoying the emergent storytelling. I still remember my XCOM 2 ranger class, a woman in her thirties I named Vasi after a high-school friend, who killed two of the Chosen, who, by the time the closing credits of the game rolled, had put down well over a hundred aliens, and that’s not to mention the hordes of Lost she’d cut down. I cannot, if I don’t look them up right now, remember a single name in my squad. I have a mild recollection of their backstories, I remember their models, even some of the lines and so on and so forth but I do not have an impression of them that will stay with me for years to come—something that is key to the XCOM formula.
Of course, the pre-made characters also come with customization options, both in terms of cosmetics and in terms of skill choice. The first I get—you’ve defined the way your characters will look, that’s—frustrating, but fine. It’s the second choice, the narrowed down customization path, which bothers me because it translates to less replayability. Also, it makes leveling up unexciting; I can’t remember a time I wasn’t excited to get that little level up sign at the end of a mission in Xcom 2, because I knew every new ability unlocked offered me tactical possibilities that might spell the difference between success and failure the next time my agents go out on a mission.
There are positives, of course - Chimera Squad runs a whole lot smoother and the price point of the game (it often drops to 10 euro or your regional equivalent) is persuasive on its own. I didn't enjoy it enough to recommend it, but I appreciate tremendously that Firaxis is willing to experiment with its formula.
Would I recommend this game? No, not unless you’re looking for a mediocre experience. Compare it to most other XCOM-likes and you’ll find this doesn’t do an awful lot that’s interesting or new. Shorter missions, a more compact story, a far less exciting strategic layer, these don’t go too far in winning me over. Compare it to XCOM 2, and this is your classical example of “one step forward, two steps back”.
The price on the box, especially on account of how often this goes for 10 euro a piece, works in its favour. So does the performance–this one works without a hitch on a purely graphical level. I don’t think the game lagged below sixty fps once for me, and my gaming notebook is middle of the line.
I do applaud that the team at Firaxis was willing to throw out so much of the XCOM formula and experiment with it--I regret to say, that experiment wasn't to my taste. Perhaps it'll be to yours!

Unfortunately, I just didn't find the new gameplay mechanics, in particular the new turn based system, to be very fun. Probably a personal preference thing, but each battle felt like a chore to get through, and It just made me wish I was playing XCOM 2 instead.

For the price, on sale or otherwise, this is a no-brainer.
Missions are diverse enough to remain interesting throughout the campaign, which lasts about 10 hours on Normal. You will likely want to play through again, as there are a variety of characters, most of whom you will neglect (or not see at all) on your initial run.
There's a solid depth to the game, with research, upgrades and other meta-elements to keep you entertained.
Negatives include a buggy and sometimes unwieldy experience; on most missions you'll find the camera randomly focusing on some enemy, or subdue/ shoot commands not working on click. Neither are gamebreakers, and can be resolved, enabling you to perform the desired actions. My game did completely crash once, though this was after around 5 hours of play, and the regular autosaves made this a minor inconvenience more than anything.
More of a spin-off game, but well worth playing.

That is not to say there is no fun to be found. There are plenty of nuances I haven't mentioned which add or take away from the experience, and overall I found this game to be much easier than regular XCOM, but it was still enjoyable. A more laid-back experience.
Plus, a lot of the ideas that came off as bad really were just not implemented well, and I think could work if some of the parameters were changed. For example, the personality characters could just be hero units, and the concept of unique weaopns found on missions would be sweet if they made them a little more unique and interesting. I do like the idea of a wider variety of gadgets and tools, but make them useful. Mostly, I love how you can capture an enemy simply by beating them down as oposed to requiring a specialized device with the horrid RNG curse.
Anyway, if you love XCOM, you will probably find some enjoyment in this...so long as you do not expect your typical XCOM experience. This truly is a spinoff in every sense.
I wish more devs would make cheaper, experimental games like this to test out new stuff instead of letting fear of failure having them churn out the same thing over and over year after year.

The characters are cheesy and the dialog is terrible, its like it was written for a american kids morning TV cartoon. As an adult this is hard to watch. well worth the price of entry even at RRP.

The idea of humans teaming up with aliens in a ‘buddy cop’ story isn’t entirely original. Even within the franchise itself, there was X-com: Apocalypse where already was a city similar to City 31. Sure, the focus of the story was on invasion from another dimension, but just like in Chimera Squad you could hire human-sectoid hybrids if you needed some powerful psionics. Though you had to be on good terms with the mutant community.
...The story itself isn’t anything fancy – you just investigate three crime syndicates to learn who is responsible for killing the last City 31 mayor. There are of course a few high tension moments, but where narrative really shines is the banter between your characters....
...Yes, now instead of randomly generated recruits, you have a pool of handcrafted agents with backstory, distinct personalities, and even relationships. There is definitely some history between a viper named Torque and Whisper – your ordinary human stuff manager. Though sectoid-human hybrid Verge is my personal favorite with his demeanor and occasional attempts at humor....
...At several points in the game you must make a choice, where to focus the investigation. Depending on that you’ll get slightly different missions and (more importantly) different enhancements for your enemies. It looks a bit game-like – pick a path just because the script said so – but it gets the job of diversifying the walkthrough challenge done...

I'm around 12 hours into XCOM: Chimera Squad. And it's really good, so far.
The game's story and plot is as follows: you're trying to go about finding out, in any way you can, which faction killed the Mayor of City 31 and why. City 31 is a city, which is the first for a new alliance and integration of humans & aliens both into one city on Earth. There's a human-only faction; alien-only faction; and a faction that contains both humans and aliens - and you're to go about finding out which faction is involved with the murder of your Mayor, as someone is not happy with the Mayor pushing for this integration of humans & aliens on Earth.
Breach Mode is cool, which is how you'll start off almost every mission or encounter. So, since this game is basically the XCOM: Cop Squad, more or less, with humans, aliens, and even robots on your team - you will breach into rooms & buildings to get bonuses (or sometimes even debuffs), all depending on what items you have in your crew, who holds the items, where you're breaching (there are often different ways to go into a room). Often, each mission and encounter (and yes, you can have multiple encounters & breaches within one big mission), this is how you will start out each mission with combat. Basically, Breaching feels like a surprise attack when you go in, every time. And it feels like VATS from Fallout 3, with how cinematic the camera is, with the way things look and act. It's just awesome.
Once you Breach, you go into combat. And combat here is a blast to watch and play. You have to play smart, strategic & whatnot. Of course, it's XCOM, so it's all turn-based. You can save at pretty much anytime that it's one of your squad's turn. Attacks look like VATS, when you execute them, as they go all cinematic on you and whatnot. Lethal combat here is just an awesome blast.
Besides killing enemies, you can even arrest enemies now. Instead of them dying, you hit them with a melee attack and knock them unconscious. Once the mission's over, you might get some kind of reward from arresting enemies. Rewards could be benefits, special items, information, and/or who knows what from arresting enemies. So, if possible and necessary, this is just another option and tool for the player to use, when in combat.
Your squad are all named & pre-planned characters. There's a little over 10 of these guys, that you can recruit. All of them are voice-acted and will do banter, especially back at your HQ. The banter is often funny, sarcastic, hilarious, and/or entertaining. You don't create your own crew here and name them from scratch here, but you can select with each mission who goes (usually up to 4 guys on a mission).
Also, they (your squad members) all have skills, stats, and whatnot you can upgrade - and they also have their own special skills too. There's no permadeath here. But if a member goes down in combat, they can get scars...which give them debuffs until you train the scars out of them when they are not in the (main) field, when you train them back at your main HQ. If you hire robots into your squad, when a member goes down, a robot can come in to help & then replace the downed member.
Your main HQ is where you decide how to outfit your crew; level-up and upgrade your crew; buy weapons/items/supplies/etc; train members to improve them (and also remove scars, if any of your crew members earned them while in battle); etc etc. You also decide what missions to take on here too, in the main room.
Also, at the main table with the view of the map of the entire city of City 31, you have to keep an eye on how run down the City is going here with problems, in each district & with the overall City 31. You can send your crew on missions that aren't the main ones for a day or few; do missions to keep each district's an overall City 31 level of heat in check (to make sure it doesn't get overrun); etc etc.
1080p60fps+ easy on my SC15 laptop (i7 7700HQ; 16 GB RAM; 6GB GTX 1060; W10 x64) at High settings. Often, it's in the 70-90fps range. Looks good, runs great. On my old desktop at 1080p at High (i7 950; 16 GB RAM; GTX 970) W10 x64) - framerates bounces here and there b/t 30-60fps. So, to keep it safe, kept it where it drops often w/ MSI Afterburner with a framerate lock of 40fps.
So far, so good. Real good. Need to play more. This game rules.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------<
ADDENDUM - 05-24-2020:
So, after around 38 hours or so, according to Steam, I have finished XCOM: CS.
Even despite the few bugs & issues that I ran into near the end of the game (crashes, freezes, squad members getting stuck, etc.) and hitting some spikes in difficulty - namely during Take Down missions, in which you will get to at the end of an Investigation of a group/faction (there's 3 main factions in total to Investigate over the course of a bunch of missions, before the big finale missions) - for the most part, I really enjoyed this game.
Despite the few bugs & issues, this was still very good and an easy recommendation.

The feel of this game is more Saturday morning cartoon than intense tactical shooter partially because of it. The artwork used for character portraits, dialogue scenes and cutscenes also looks kind of low budget and I think it would have been better to just use the in-game character models, which look much better. The first thing it brought to mind was 'Battleborn' with it's janky looking intro video and artwork, honestly. (just as far as the art style goes).
Characters can't really die. And if you leave the level without retrieving their bodies... Thats okay. They will magically appear at your base, well and alive, thank you. Thats a little silly.
I used to be afraid to play Xcom. This one is a little cartoonish for my taste.
But for the current sale price I guess it's okay.

Game is nice, with same turn-base tactical fighting style as XCOM2 and some new features.
But it seems something is missing in this game. It isn't very hooking. I finished several other games while still played in this one. I can't point out why it is so... maybe because story too linear and simple or maybe it is just repetitiveness of the game. Still - enemy varies through game and difficulty curve is nice. Not too hard but isn't so simple so mistakes are punished.
Recommended if you like turn-based fight sequences in XCOM2 and want more.

I just think the other Xcom games are better and more fun. (Xcom enemy unknown/xcom2)
This one felt less 'fair' I didn't feel like I had much of a change often, it felt like the difficoulty was inflated and I Would always get flanked or hit no matter what I did.
I think what is important to take from this, is that it doesnt feel like the other 2 Xcom's made by Firaxis.
I Think people can enjoy this game way more then I did. but I think it is important to know that it looks the same as xcom2 it doesnt play that way or feel that way.

The most impactfull change is the breach phase and for me it was the one that kills the nature of the game. In all the previous games the battles started slowly. You approached your enemies carefully preparing for the encounter. There was always an element of surprise. At least in the beginning of the game.
Now with the breach mode you are thrown into the battle and the shooting immediately starts. There is absolutely no strategy involved as you start the mission in a duel-like arena with all enemies standing in a semicircle around you.
Choosing the entry point makes a minmal difference, but it always ends of with loading and saving when chosing the wrong character for the entry. Since you start in close combat and there is no space even more loading and saving. You cannot afford to miss shots (playing on expert).
Unfortunately the autosave is extremly annoying. Sometimes it saves three times a round and sometimes it doesn't. Therefore you save manually which ends up in dozens of savegames you have to delete after each mission. When you reload, the order of the savegames is changed, so enjoy searching for the right one. When restarting the encounter you have to listing to the dialogue again.
I haven't played a lot, but the developers clearly wanted to make the game quicker. For me this was always the beauty of the game. Most missions have a time limit or reinforcements are send every other round. You cannot hold your ground you have to push recklessly.
Speed significantly increased also in the strategy mode (city). Missions pop up and you just do them. There is no reaearch pause or waiting for the story continue. Battle-in, battle-out all the time.
Overall I think they tried to tackle some issues in the game, but honestly I miss slow and suspenseful missions. Since Apocalypse I also miss the destruction of buildings. I loved how the crumbled to dust. Now you just blow a wall here and there.

XCOM 2: - Earth has fallen, you must reignite humanity's will to fight and overthrow your alien overlords.
Chimera Squad - Let's all just be friends and invite war criminals and psychologically unstable aliens into the post-war police force.
Thematically, this game's story is an absolute failure and should never become canon. Apocalypse did a post-invasion setting much better.

1. Breaking a mission a part into several encounters was absolute genius. This allowed you to more freely leverage your team's abilities without the fear of attracting another enemy pod. This was something of a sore spot for me in previous XCOM games. You would often have to resort to tossing a bunch of grenades and picking of stragglers, as opposed to moving in for a melee strike or properly flanking your enemy.
One point of improvement: I would have liked it if I could use all once-per-mission abilities once EVERY encounter and simply amp up the individual encounters to balance things out. On one hand, I do recognize the mechanic introduces some more long term planning, and makes the mission more of an endurance run instead of a sprint, but, on the other hand, I like the sprint! I'd like to see difficult encounters that force creativity and the use of all my abilities in an effective way. FYI: I am not claiming to be a better game designer, but its interesting to think how this would make the game feel.
--------------------------------
2. I know some will not share my enthusiasm here, but: I was glad to have pre-generated soldiers. I personally did not care for customizing my soldiers' appearances or names, or specializations. I'm not the type of gamer that goes for those items, which have no direct, or very little, impact on the gameplay itself.
By losing the ability to customize to some extent, you gained soldiers that are further taylored to the core gameplay and are designed with many team combinations and uses for the player to discover; I feel this makes each solider more relevant. Through these combinations and discoveries, a player can still create a very unique team that caters to their play style, which, for me, just shows how superficial soldiers in previous XCOM games were. If anything, these soldiers had even MORE personality as they were not some generic drop-in, whose existence the game was indifferent about.
--------------------------------
3. I was not a fan of base building or the bonding system in XCOM 2. They did not add much fun to the game and seemed, to me, to be an unnecessary abstraction that posed as being strategic (did not significantly enhance battle tactics for me). I understand that some see this as a staple of XCOM, but I viewed it as taking me too far from the tactics and action.
My take on the XCOM vision is that it was intended to be a brutally heavy tactical game with light strategic elements that enhance this tactical layer. I feel Chimera squad did this perfectly. I was still able to research new weapons/items based on my high level strategy. I could also dedicate soldiers to gathering more resources, resources that could be spent to further my envisioned strategy. In short: The strategy is relevant and just light enough as to take away from the core of XCOM, the squad-based tactical combat.
--------------------------------
4. You could play as the aliens! I often felt, playing previous XCOM games, that the enemy had all of the cool abilities and interesting mechanics (Codex splitting into several units, at the expense of max health; Teleportation; Viper's squeeze ability, etc.).
--------------------------------
5. Related to point 4 above: I like how I could jump into the game and, immediately , get a bunch of interesting starter abilities (like immediately using psionics if you recruit a solider capable of it).
Previous XCOM games were, I must admit, a little lame for the first several missions. For instance: I never understood why the first mission, in XCOM 2, existed outside of a tutorial, as every character had the same weapon, same abilities, and nearly identical stats.
What is the point of making the player wait to have interesting abilities? Why not give them some candy right away and let the game shine? You can still give that feeling of progress by introducing even cooler abilities later. Forcing the player to start with none, and have all incoming recruits be these cookie-cut generics with no skills (even in late game, without some training and a lot experience) was a little frustrating.
--------------------------------
6. I enjoyed the new turn order mechanic. It makes the game feel more involved, visceral, and less like a chess game passively going on as you converse with a good friend. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the thought that goes behind each decision to use an ability, action, or move, but adding this sub-system of priority really makes the game more interesting. Suddenly, you are faced with interesting decisions such as:
a. Do I take out that large Brute now or quickly take several thralls (early in the turn order) out of the equation and minimize the fire you are taking?
b. Do I use this ability now, which will aid a future action, or address the more imemdiate threat?
c. How should I stack my breach order (I like this too)? Who do I want closer together in the timeline. This decision will impact the entire encounter, allowing you to more fluidly change tactics.
This temporal layer makes the game a lot more fun.
In short: I definitely recommend this game. This is a standalone game that has its own identify and, I believe, adds a positive mark to the XCOM franchise.

Set after the events of XCOM 2, there's a charm to Chimera Squad between the characters you find and a story that keeps things interesting throughout. If you're a fan of turn based tactical games this is a great, albiet seemingly abridged, romp through XCOM.

The gist of it:
XCOM: Chimera Squad is the mobile version of XCOM 2 but don't take that as a full negative, at its core the game still offers the same cool gameplay moments you liked in the franchise but to a lesser extent.
???? The good parts:
+Tactical combat is okay.
+The squad you control is more personal and interesting than previous games.
+The breach mechanic is a cool idea and should be used for future games to diversify the missions.
????The bad parts:
-The overall level design is boring.
-Not much depth in regards to pre-mission gameplay.
-Gets repetitive very quickly.
Story
Chimera Squad is a spin-off for the XCOM franchise, set in the same universe, and several years after the events of XCOM 2 when humans have come to work together with the alien species they fought against. You control a squad of talented soldiers each with its unique personality and background and you're tasked with controlling the chaos in City 31.
The main story is far less interesting and threatening than the previous games however the squad you control is far more personal. They cannot die and you are given a choice throughout the game on who to recruit as you won't be able to play and hear every single one of them.
The lore expands the XCOM universe a bit but you won't miss anything if you skip the game which sadly puts it in a bad spot. Shut down 3 main gangs each with its own unique set of enemies and save the city. Simple as that just like a side cop story. I would not recommend the game for its story alone as it hardly matters but I do have to admit there are some cool characters in the game that you might enjoy.
Story rating: 6/10
Gameplay
I mentioned Chimera Squad is the mobile version of XCOM 2 and the reason for that is how the whole breach idea was thought out and due to the length of the levels.
You are put at the entrance of a map where you place the squad you picked before the mission and they breach the entrance where things go into a slow-motion action moment and you have to shoot the enemies xcom style in front of you or use available abilities. After that, you resume the gameplay just as you are familiar with from the previous games however it will always be just a very small room. After you clear the room, you get back into breach mode and advance to the next one. And each mission can range from just 1 room to max 3.
As you can imagine, each mission can last you from 10 minutes or less to max 30 depending on your skill. There are some exceptions such as the story maps where it might take you longer but those are extremely rare. When you're playing through these levels it feels like Chimera Squad started as a mobile game to expand its universe and gameplay to other platforms. All the missions will be the same and you get bored easily. I personally could not play more than an hour or two.
Sadly the length of these levels as well as the fact that you cannot lose your personal squad has a huge impact on the difficulty. Since you always know how many rooms you have, after a few hours into the game nothing will surprise and you'll have no difficulty dealing with the enemies. There are never any scripted sequences or events in the mission themselves, nothing to put you on the edge, everything is set in stone, just like a mobile game. The risk factor that the XCOM franchise is well known for is gone.
That being said, the core gameplay such as the combat is the same as the previous games. Each squad member you recruit has their own unique abilities and as they level up they become stronger. Skill trees, load-outs, and item inventory are also present in the game. Pre-mission gameplay is made of training your squad for better stats or healing the scars if they bleed out in a mission, researching upgrades such as better weapons or armors, a spec ops tab where you can send available squad members to gather extra resources and the tactical map. The tactical map of City 31 is separated by 9 districts and in each district, you can place a field team to control that area and gather monthly resources that can be used to upgrade those said field teams, do research, or buy items. It seems a bit complicated but it's fairly simple. Each district has a level alert panel and if it reaches max the City 31 panic bar rises. It's similar to XCOM 2 and if the bar fills up it's game over. Doing missions in these districts lowers the threat so you have to choose carefully what missions you pick.
Honestly, if you decide to play the game do not jump in expecting the depth of XCOM 2. As I mentioned it's a more, casual experience but if you miss the gameplay from XCOM 2 and you need it in your veins, Chimera Squad does fill it up partially.
Gameplay rating: 7/10
Audio
Like everything else in the game, the soundtrack is far more chill than the bombastic epic songs from XCOM franchise but they're not bad. Quite the opposite, it fits well with the whole buddy squad thing the game is going for.
Voice acting is quite good as well and your squad having each their own unique personality and voice actor was a good idea and I would also like this added to the list of things future XCOM games should have. Imagine having a great cast member with a nice personality and they get killed in action due to your mistakes. The emotional impact would be great. As for Chimera Squad, I enjoyed all the characters I recruited and their banter was quite funny at times.
Sound effects, in particular, are standard and are pretty much the same from XCOM 2, no issues there whatsoever.
Audio rating: 7.5/10
Graphics, performance and tech analysis
My biggest gripe is the atmosphere. I knew what I was getting into story-wise and gameplay-wise but I did not expect to look at the ugliest and most boring levels ever. Remember the sci-fi nature of XCOM 2? Chimera Squad is set in the future yet the maps are back in the past. They range from boring warehouses, standard rooms to ugly garages, and whatnot. I believe only in the 4-5 story missions you'll see some good looking futuristic map but other than those, it's pretty bad.
Considering the above and the length of each mission, the performance is okay. The same engine as XCOM 2 so expect some drops during explosions but other than that it runs smoothly and I was shocked that besides poor glitchy animations I had very few bugs that would ruin the experience. There are some bugs regarding skills or better said lack of information but it's not as bad as some make it out to be.
Graphics, performance and tech analysis score: 6/10
Conclusion
I'll be blunt about it. Chimera Squad isn't that good of a game but it's not a bad game either. It's average honestly and the conclusion is of course get it on a sale even if you're an XCOM fan. I did not want to give it a thumbs up but I have to be fair, XCOM 2 vanilla without the expansion at launch was a 7 rated game. I almost did not recommend it but the expansion changed my mind. Chimera Squad is inferior even to the original and thus my thumbs down.
Final score: 6.6/10

Gameplay: Being a spin-off of XCOM 2, the gameplay (and the bugs) are pretty similar. The biggest difference is Chimera Squad breaks up missions into multiple smaller maps, called encounters. Each encounter starts with a planning segment on who you want to send through each breach point (if you have the proper breaching tool/ability), with every point having different bonuses and maluses and an indicator for number of hostiles, and the option to use additional equipment for bonuses. It's not a very in-depth tactical mechanic, since you don't get a floor plan or decide where your team takes cover once they've breached, but overall helps to keep the game much faster paced than the overwatch leapfrog style of gameplay its predecessors had.
Art: No major changes from XCOM2 except for the still-frame comic book style used in exposition. The style of the comics are bland and inoffensive, but don't really fit the tone of the XCOM franchise.
Voice Acting: My biggest gripe with the voice-acting was that nothing was done to make the aliens sound alien. Axiom the Muton sounds like a man making his voice deeper. Torque the Viper sounds like she should be attending high school. Verge the Sectoid could be the long lost brother of Fraiser. Cherub the former Advent soldier sounds too young for the part.
Narrative: The high-level concept is fine. Having won the war against the aliens, XCOM is now engaged in counter-terrorism against aliens and humans who seek to upset the new balance of the world. And rather than having a team of generics, you follow a team of crafted characters. The problem, however, is in the lack of emotional attachment to what's going on. The narrative does a poor job of making you care about what's going on; the city is generically named City 31, with its location left unknown, and having no real character to it. This wouldn't be an issue if the inciting incident wasn't the mayor of said city getting assassinated. XCOM and XCOM 2 had it easy to get player buy-in, to be fair, but that doesn't excuse it.
It doesn't help that the game is tonally inconsistent, with the story being presented as society on the verge of collapse, but none of the characters (now defined, rather than generic) taking things more seriously than a mandatory workplace meeting. Characters engage in out-of-place banter and pep talks mid-combat (Cherub being the most egregious example, followed closely by Torque), which makes life-or-death situations feel more like training exercises. The previous games had some banter, but it was saved for appropriate times (i.e. when the team is safe at base). The problem is that this undermines the game, making everything seem less important than it should be.

It has lighter plot, colorful art, shorter missions, with some lighthearted dialogue about post-Advent life on Earth and cool squad members, it's a great introduction to the XCOM universe and a very fun game overall. If you can tolerate the lack of constant punishment and/or you're into sarcastic snake waifus it's great fun for about 30-40 hours.

To sum it up front this is Xcom lite. It takes most of what xcom is and paints it in broad strokes. It lacks many features and reasons what make the mainline series so entertaining, however at the same time it also offers a more casual and less intense experience that is far easier to pick up and put down.
Much like regular xcom the game is divided into tactical missions and strategy layer in your base. In the base you pick missions, progress time, upgrade your gear and agents and so forth. This portion of the game is significantly simplified in comparison to the mainline series. This is again both positive and negative depending where you stand. On one hand you don't have to worry what your long term plan is, what your contingency plans are, why you made this or that decision a month ago. It removes the long term complexity and risk. There is less risk for failure, there is no real long term progression. You have your three investigations that roughly work the same way, but you don't have much to build up in your base. What this does is makes it easy to pick up a campaign you may have put on pause for some time. Unlike when I pick up mid campaign of long war and stare at the screen for an hour trying to figure just what the hell I was doing and where I was going. Wishing I left myself notes. So you won't have the complexity, the long term planning, or risk of xcom, but you get a bite sized feel of it.
The tactical game is also abridged. All encounters are done in a small area. You do not traverse a map. Your objectives are usually very simple. Kill targets, move on, rescue a target and extract, protect a spot or so forth. There is no pods, there is no activation, no sneaking, no planning when to engage. You also use agents, not units. This does few things, one it removes your element from the game. You don't get to create a unit from scratch, their bio, see them evolve, earn their keep...or die. One of the most amusing part of xcom is how you essentially can construct your own narrative with your own units. You see them grow, improve, get hurt, struggle and die. You get attached and you feel the loss when one of them doesn't make it. Here you have none of that. All units are essentially heroes, with their own bio, their own set of stats and skills. Again that is both good and bad. I don't think I have to explain why it's bad. If units can't die in an xcom game, it's hard pressed to even call it an xcom game. Here if an agent 'dies', you have to redo the mission. However for people that don't want a long term investment, a really punishing experience that you may have to learn through many errors. This might be the game for you if you still desire that feel of tactical gameplay.
The last biggest thing, which ties into the whole bad/good perspective is a MASSIVE fundamental change to how tactical portion is played. This is turn order. In mainline games it works like this. Your turn, you control all your units, when you are done you pass the turn to the enemy. Enemy does their turn, then its back to you. Here each unit will have an order, alternating between you and them. If you played Divinity Original Sin, you will know what I mean. Well this change more or less guts the tactical challenge of the game in comparison to mainline games. It would take too long to go over why, but in short it's that to balance such a design your units gain some incredible skills that make it too easy to beat enemies. For one all your items are FREE actions. Any xcom player will immediately understand how earth shattering that one fact alone is. But to give a better reason to understand why, think of Divinity Original Sin games. You know who goes next. All you have to do to gain a massive advantage is to control that unit, so they skip their turn. You do this enough and enemies barely get to do their turns. There are LOTS of skills and items that can control units. Hence by design it's very hard to make this challenging in the manner mainline xcom games are. Again the bad is that this is watered down xcom, devoid of sometimes incredible challenge, but on the other hand people who find that frustrating and want still experience a level of challenge that still involves thinking a problem out will find this more engaging.
I'm not gonna go over the story. It's the usual. Nothing special. Aesthetic I'll pass up. I did run into some odd bugs. Mostly graphical ones where characters were standing in mid air, or things would not animate and such. It wasn't frequent, but it did happen. Gameplay bugs were rare. I may have ran into one or two, but on that end I was fortunate. Nothing like bullshit of having your high cover go away, or advent shooting you through the roof of the building.
To reiterate. This is xcom lite. If you are a mainline series vet and want more. This isn't really it. However for the price, this is not a bad game. It's affordable, bite sized watered down experience I can play while hammered and not having to think as hard as I do when playing LW. Take that as you will.

There are some caveats, most of which stem from the aging engine this is based on. Breaches are a fun idea, but the over-the-shoulder action and blurred backgrounds of these segments don't give me any idea of enemy grouping, making it hard to plan flanking maneuvers or where exactly my troops will be when they breach. There's also just a lot of rough edges with those sections graphically, and I'd much prefer a purely isometric viewpoint - or at least the option for it.
As has been the case throughout much of XCOM's history, the meta game is the most annoying and unnecessary component. The extra time pressure just isn't fun, and a better meta-game could be had by examining the afore-mentioned Jagged Alliance and maybe doing more of a city takeover. Again, at the least, make that stuff completely optional, though at least this time there are some ways to make the meta-game largely moot.
Abilities are also lacking a bit in creativity here, and are lifted straight from XCOM and XCOM 2's units and enemies. Your snake character will pull enemies or allies close to you where they can - I'm sorry for this - put the squeeze on them. There are one or two exceptions to this, but they are largely cobbled together from the previous games' assets, and don't really come across as particularly cool or inventive. That said, there are plenty of agents with fun ways to play, so this isn't too much of an issue.
I'm a fan too of the universe they've built around this game. Some of the ads can be a little cringey and too on the nose to be satirical, but the dorky character interactions feel like they came straight from a Syfy nineties TV show, and I'm all about that. I'm also generally a fan of the art style they've gone with here, especially the simple, colorful, and well-drawn art depicting the story.
One huge point to the game's favor - restart points within the three-tiered missions are linked either to the start of the mission or to each breach, depending on how far back you want to go. That's a good choice.
It's a great entry to a great series. Grab it if you want more XCOM. Even if it looks a bit different on the surface, dig deeper and you're going to find an authentic XCOM experience, just streamlined and made more accessible. With a deeper, more fun meta-game and some originality, this will be a real treat in future installments.

The loop doesn't change. The characters don't change much. The level of challenge doesn't really change. None of the surprises and joys of the core XCOM gameplay loop are present; you never lose anyone, and you have no real customization.
It's a different game. I like the breach mechanic. I like the idea of bite-sized missions. But there needs to be more variation.
