Über das Spiel

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood

Also definitiv ein No-Go.

Egal wer was sagt. Das Spiel macht Spaß Leute.
JA das Spiel kann zwar mit dem echt guten Trailer nicht mit halten. AAAABER es ist auf seine art sehr gut. Und in mein Augen...das beste Werwolf spiel aufn markt soweit. Charakter.

There are so many things that work here, but they are not so polished and explored deeper. Combat and stealth are good but repetitive and without depth. Voice acting is terrible - especially the protagonist. The plot itself is also without depth. I see a heart there tho. Some more time in the oven and it could have been way better and polished in general.
I guess I can recommend it to the fans of the franchise. That one is for sure.

I loved playing Werewolf and was really looking forward to dipping into this world. Instead we've got what could be an interesting story line, but the poor everything else makes it almost impossible to have any interest in the story and characters.

So the everything else:
- Poor character acting and bland voice work.
- Poor character animation, particularly for something released so recently.
- Poorly laid out, railroading levels.
- Glitchy and immersion breaking transitions (like moving in and out of ventilation ducts).
- Limited AI with repetitive patterns and janky movement.
- Limited and rather bland upgrade tree.
- Janky movement of character.
- Bland button mashing combat.
- Stealth doesn't feel stealthy, just walking around as a wolf and stealth status is lost with little warning and instantaneous ant like response from AI. Overall just a poor implementation of a stealth mechanic.
- Models and textures are OK, but they get repetitive very rapidly so places look very samey.

Overall it looks like a 10 year old console game and plays like a 20 year old one.

While the graphics may be a bit outdated and it seems kinda easy to get through even on hard mode I truly enjoyed this game. If you're looking for a good story and just something to bash your way through enemies as a werewolf, this is your game. At the beginning you'll have to sneak around in wolf form but after that, let the chaos commence~ When will you Rage?

Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood – an Action-Adventure/Brawler, based on the Pen&Paper “Werewolf: The Apocalypse” (first published 1992), part of the “World of Darkness”.

Before I start my review, two things up front:

1. There are other reviews claiming that you instantly fail if you are caught during stealth. This is nonsense. Whoever claims this, has not played past the first mission, which is still part of the tutorial and the “don’t be caught”-mechanic is just relevant in the first half of that mission. After that you are mostly free to choose how you want to approach a situation: Stealth to take out as many enemies as possible before the bloody fighting starts or go in “Red in Tooth and Claw” right from the start.

2. The game developer, “cyanide studio”, is a rather small company and not a big shot with a huge amount of budget. So this is NOT an AAA-Game made by some huge studio and it is their first brawler game (other games by cyanide for example are “Call of Cthulhu” and “Styx: Master of Shadows”). So don’t expect top-notch-graphics by today’s standards and huge diversity in gameplay. This is a classic (some might even say “old-school”) Action-Adventure/Brawler-Game set in the World of Darkness. So keep that in mind.

About the game: As a huge fan of the original Pen&Paper I was thrilled to hear that we would finally be getting a game based on “Werewolf: The Apocalypse” (there were two other attempts many years ago, both failed). Knowing it was a small studio and following the marketing and information about the game closely I checked my expectations concerning the graphics and focused on the gameplay and how the lore it was based on was treated.

And I was NOT disappointed. I had a lot of fun playing the game, I enjoyed the story and characters, the stealth parts (although the AI could have been a bit more challenging), the ability to change between Human- and Wolf-form, but even more so the fighting style in the 9-feet-tall Crinos-form (the “warform” of the Garou). The animations and movements of the Werewolf- and Wolf-form are great and the setting, tone and music capture a lot of the atmosphere of the original Pen&Paper.

*Maybe I should mention, that I bought it on Epic Games when it came out in February 2021 and played it various times before I decided to buy it here on steam a second time to support the developer*

The story is fast paced and straightforward but decent and the depiction of the lore is mostly pretty accurate when it comes to the adaptation of the original source material. There are a lot of details that players of the Pen&Paper will recognize and it is clear to me, that the team of developers, though definitely limited by budget and time, truly love the RPG their game is based upon.

That said, fans of “Werewolf: The Apocalypse” will indeed understand a lot more of the hints and details of the story and about what is going and why it is happening, than the average gamer. The developers present the quite complex lore of the Pen&Paper here in a more simplified way and let some aspects of it unmentioned, so anyone who is completely new to “Werewolf: The Apocalypse” won’t get “lore-bombed”. And they converted a usually pack-oriented RPG (Garou gather and fight in packs) into a straightforward single-player campaign.

I recommend to every player: Talk to the important NPCs, and not just once but on several occasions. Gather as much information as you can, explore the hub areas and levels, look for spirits, read the documents and listen to the conversations of other characters. It pays of and you get a better understanding of the whole background of the story and feeling of the setting, which benefits especially those who don’t know the RPG.

Is it a perfect game? No. Is it the Open World-I can choose my own character/breed/moon auspice/tribe-kind of game that many fans of the Pen&Paper wished for? No. Would I prefer if it would have been way bigger with a longer story, wider areas, more background and more lore? Absolutely. But it is a solid AA-game with a lot of passion for the source material, a fun hack-and-slash combat system and a great soundtrack.

If you love Werewolves, Wolves or are a fan of “Werewolf: The Apocalypse” you should definitely give it a try.

tl;dr

Werewolf: the Apocalypse – Earthblood manages to marry action and stealth in a manner where neither is slighted, but action is the real deal here. Werewolf Cahal returns to his Pack after five years of exile following a disastrous mission only to see they've gotten in deeper fighting an evil corporation out to endanger the world. Get ready to hunt for spirits throughout levels with magical vision in order to upgrade your skills, skulk around as a wolf and cause havoc in werewolf form once the alarm starts blaring. Story is there with all its “save the planet” glory, but it's the freedom to play your way that sold Earthblood to me. Even if you'll mostly fight similar enemies for a while and monotonous warehouses and office locales. Good pinky dip for the franchise and here's hoping for more.

Full Review

Compared to World of Darkness' better known vampire counterpart, Werewolf: the Apocalypse has flown under the radar as far as video games go. Now finally Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood gets to take center stage. There's a matter of tempering expectations first as Eartblood is not an RPG some were lead to believe, but rather action meets stealth. Was it worth the wait, though?

It doesn't take long for disaster to strike our protagonist Cahal of the Fianna tribe as he loses his wife in a raid on an evil corporation called Endron. This results in him abandoning his own pack as well as his daughter, and going on a five year self-imposed exile after losing himself to Rage. Until he hears they, now operating with human activists, continued to fight the good fight and his daughter Aedana had stepped into her mother's former role – being an inside woman. Looking to redeem himself Cahal returns and if there's a chance he gets to avenge his wife all the better for it.

In this setting werewolves, or Garou, fight to save the world at the behest of its very own spiritual representation called Gaia. This “saving” takes place in many shapes, but is primarily characterized by maintaining the balance between material and spiritual realms. In modern times this tends to effectively mean becoming eco-terrorists who fight polluting corporations, literally or otherwise seeing as everything has a spiritual equivalent in the realm of Umbra, acting under the auspice of less well-meaning spirits. These entities seek to unbalance the status quo for their own benefit all the while Garou serve as Gaia's warriors combating such incursions.

There's a metric TON of lore to all of this and I've given you the cliff notes version which is more than Earthblood does because it aims to keep your focus grounded. This can be somewhat jarring as you get to interact with your pack's spiritual Totem spirit, for example, but still.

What struck me as strange is just how minimal the experience you're getting here is. For example, Cahal's tribe? Game will barely even mention that unless you read the notes scattered about. That's not even getting into his character. He's a gruff and almost stoic type which seems to be at odds with Fianna image of warrior poets or loud braggarts, depending on who's answering. Characters themselves never really get much attention and it's fortunate that goes hand-in-hand with a likewise simple approach to story game has. There's two pillars to it: avenging those you cherish and saving the planet. It just so happens that, be it your hacker Kinfolk or Silver Talon pack leader, everyone can conveniently direct their anger at Endron. I did like how there were some attempts to ambiguity later on, but it's portrayed in such obvious manner you can immediately figure out something is wrong. Only people who may be fooled in this instance, ironically, are fans of the property who know about a certain anti-human tribe's ways.

Enough waffling about the story bits because it's time to get into gameplay. This is where I got blindsided by how the game approaches action and stealth so they work perfectly together. You have three forms to work with, after all.

Stealth in a game driven entirely by turning into Crinos aka hulking wolfman destroyer form dedicated to combat alone, which comes with its own Agile and Heavy stances, is tempered by the presence of Lupus form where you assume the shape of a regular wolf. Now that I think about it Cahal's human form is mainly there to press switches and talk to scant few other characters, it's the action and stealth ones pulling most of the weight. So how does an action game manage to integrate stealth without it feeling tacked on? Simple – by making stealth entirely optional, but beneficial to engage in all the while keeping the doors ajar enough so stealth can always escalate into action. I had a good laugh when the only mission where Cahal is seemingly set for a stealthy approach can just be hacked and slashed through leaving your contact wondering what you're going to do now. Protagonist answers he'll think of something.

I wish Earthblood had more there to work with. For me it boiled down to “stealth became too cumbersome, combat became too annoying” as game kept throwing more obtuse level layouts and enemy compositions at you. Probably not helped by the fact you're largely confined to corridors with plenty of chest high walls to hide behind, cameras to avoid and fuse boxes to sabotage incoming reinforcements with. Reasoning behind why you would want to do SOME stealth has less to do with thinning out enemy ranks, as they'll send waves of reinforcements, and more with building up your Rage which lets you use special abilities. You can also generate it in combat, but why not prepare beforehand? Cahal can also use a crossbow to deal out damage and flasks to increase Rage, but I honestly never found much use for either. On normal difficulty cameras were never an issue because combat isn't really an issue to begin with. Sure, some enemies are trickier as silver damage can limit your max health until you upgrade your skills a bit, but nothing you can't work around with some dodges or target prioritization. I also wish an action game like this had more worthwhile bosses instead of couple I actually remember.

Skills? Yes, I've saved the best or worst for last. Further enforcing the whole “play it your way” is the way in which progression via Spirit points isn't at all tied to how you play. You get some from mission completion, but 90% comes from tracking down vagrant spirits scattered throughout levels. This means regular backtracking throughout the level to find the ones you've missed with your Batman, errr, Umbra vision and Lupus form's detection upgrade should be the first one you buy. These points can then be spent on Tactical or Combat skills. Just keep something in mind – Earthblood doesn't feature level selection. Make sure you get them Spirits as you need them if you want to get ALL the skills by end game.

In conclusion I can say game had me hooked enough to not only collect all the Spirits along the way, but also to replay the final mission to see both endings. Amusingly enough side missions ended up being the most frustrating aspect of a game that teaches you to rely on Umbra vision only to expect you can locate things without reliance on it. As far as soundtrack goes I cannot remember much, but sound effects were crunchy enough even with general lack of gore. I'd say they nailed the overall feeling of Werewolf: the Apocalypse down to how the game ends.

Werewolf the apocalypse is a hidden gem of a game I’d argue that the game is even underrated I’ll go ahead and break down what I liked and disliked about this game please note I will not be spoiling anything during my review!

#Story issues
If you are coming into this game with the mindset that this game is going to have a complex and ground breaking story then you are not going to enjoy this game for that aspect because the story never really allows you to connect with any of the characters emotionally in the story meaning you will meet a character the character dies and you just don't feel sad that the character died because the game never really allowed you to form a connection with any of the characters. I definitely would have liked if the game provided backstory about Cahal as when you first boot the game up it feels like the game just started you in the middle of the game not the beginning as the game doesn't give me a reason to care for any character which sucks as you will see many scenes where you think i should be sad for this character however why am i not feeling sad and it all goes back to the game failing to give you a reason to feel invested and connected with any of the characters.

#Graphics/glitches/Ai
The game definitely could have used a little polishing when it came down to the Graphics now the graphics are pretty good however I feel that the graphics could have been a lot better as character models aren’t amazing looking in this game especially that one character model of the business suit dude near the beginning of the game his head model low key looked like clay. Some objects don’t have any collusion so you can phase your character through the object. The AI could have been improved as the AI feel like robots instead of dynamic humans walking around during the sneaking sections. I hope the devs update the AI as it's very bare bones when it comes to the stealth sections as the AI will either stand in one spot forever or a AI will walk around in circles forever which kinda breaks immersion for me seeing how limited the AI was during stealth.

#Gameplay
The game play is very smooth and responsive i would hands down have to say the gameplay is very good this is the part of the game where it shines the most you are sadly limited to a bow as your primary weapon as a human however you can choose to switch between human and lupin at any time both lupin and human offer a good mix up of gameplay/tatics. However the best form is of course the Werewolf when you play as the werewolf you can feel the weight behind the werewolf movement and attacks you can upgrade the Werewolfs abilities via the perk tree in the main menu however in order to do so you will have to collect spirit points from smelling plants that you will bump into randomly during your journey to beat this amazing game!!!

#Game pretending that your choices matter.
One slightly annoying thing that this game does many times is it makes you think that if you pick the wrong option that your actions have consequences but in reality your choices really don't matter like at all when it comes to how you answer back via the wheel of options i would have liked if my choices did matter and had weight behind them. The only time that your actions have weight behind them is when you get to the end of the game where you have to choose between two options which is a shame. Furthermore i found the dialogue wheel text to be a little confusing as you don't know exactly what cahal will say basically we have the fallout 4 dialogue issue in the game sadly i would have liked more context when it came to choosing the dialogue options from the wheel.

#Conclusion
But with all that said I don’t regret buying Werewolf the Apocalypse Because I bought the game for 1 reason and that was to play as a werewolf and slaughter human beings in the game and it’s very enjoyable. If you don’t have a love for werewolves or don’t like fast pace combat then I wouldn’t recommend this game to you however if you like werewolves and enjoy the fast pace combat then I would 900% recommend this game to you definitely go and get this game during a sale or even buy it at full price even with the issues I listed above they don’t take away from the overall experience of just slashing people apart as the werewolf every level was fun and I can see myself replaying this game a lot. I give werewolf the apocalypse a solid 10/10 for it’s amazing werewolf role playing experience you feel powerful and plus the werewolf model is THICC.

Game of the year for me for 2022

Here's the thing. I really really really wanted to give this game a thumbs up.

I mean its a werewolf game where you hack and slash your way through evil corporations. Whats not to love right?

Except its not like that. Not really. You mostly sneak around from level to level until you reach a certain point. Then your character, sometimes for no good reason, will get enraged and turn int oa werewolf and THEN you finally get to rip and tear your way through badguys. But if you happen to get caught sneaking around before its time to change, its game over. You don't get to change if you get caught, its just game over. I feel like that was a very poor decision.

Plus the graphics only look great in the opening cutscene and during werewolf fighting scenes. FOr the rest of it the game looks really shoddy and a little sub-par.

The voice acting is bland and boring and its just not very good. I mean there are some serious dramatic moments that happen to these characters but their tone of voice is like they couldn't care less.

The story itself is pretty unoriginal, just another revenge plot. But the idea is original and nice. I want more werewolf games but I also want better werewolf games. When you get to actually be a werewolf and do some fighting, its pretty fun I guess. But all the other stuff around it was so boring and so grindy that I found myself more bored than anything else.

Maybe wait for a big discount before buying.

Thanks so much for reading and if you want some more in depth info with actual gameplay then please check out the video on my youtube channel (link below).

If not then I hope I was able to help some of you out there to spend your money wisely. Thanks for reading.
