Here lies Eternal Crusade, the gentle hum of the servers now silent, the community long since vacant and the dream of large persistent lore respecting Warhammer 40,000 warfare unrealised and slowly being forgotten to the mists of time.
What started out as an optimistic and seemingly transparent foray into making the first large multiplayer focused Warhammer 40,000 game, with frequent and regular streams by the developers themselves, passionate about the grand scope of the game and revolutionary technologies that could link vast amounts of players from all over the world together seemed like such blissful sweet siren song to the ears of the longstanding Wh40k fan, weary, fatigued, who had endured a never ending plague of mobile titles, gone was the hope of THQ’s Dark Millennium Online as they had ceased to be, vanished into the night after such long silence, gone was the desperation for Dawn Of War 3 to be a fitting successor to the well established series and the venerable titles that came before it… All eyes rested upon Eternal Crusade but like the effect of any siren song we slowly drifted towards the rocks.
Change is inevitable, but the level and frequencies of changes from game direction to confirmed features to even the staff faces themselves led to uncertainty. such that a small crack appeared in the bustling fora, many arguments brought forth by an increasingly fracturing player-base clammering for everything from complete lore accuracy to full single-player campaigns, Terminators at launch and Skyrim like dungeons whilst War councils envisaged never materialised and hel hath no fury like a Dark Angel high level founder deprived of his Space Marine Attack Bike after spending vast amounts.
But I remember it fondly, for in the ashes of Eternal Crusade I found my large persistent conflict, against lawn mowing Wave Serpents in buildings, Chaos Space Marines with flame shooting Autocannons engulfing people in flame and entire legions of Astartes armed with storm shields and power swords
The battleground was quite different to what we had foreseen, for these entertaining battles were fought on the forums rather than in game, all to the laughter of an unstoppable Indian love guru.

The rest? broken promises, unbalanced races, disproportionate micropayments for ridiculously broken weapons, developer abandonment and an empty game.
when from one day to the next a game in clearly early access (alpha or not much better) becomes a full game it doesn't bode well.
I won't be sorry to see games like this disappear

Rather'n this being intended to be a commentary on a closed down game, I'm posting this just to point out that any future projects by this developer should be viewed with careful consideration, given their established nature of not putting in quality effort in any aspect of their development.
Honestly, it's infuriating that you can't refund on Humble key purchases on grounds of the developers being scammers, or otherwise being pure rubbish. Shame on you, Behavior Interactive.

Sure the game had its issues like devs overpromising, bugs and glitches, game optimization and map design was.. not so great, there were issues with balance etc.. but at the end of the day I think the end result was a very unique game that at least made an attempt to live up to what a w40k shooter should feel like.
Features that I d like to see in more shooter games that this game had: a meaningful melee system, including a variety of melee attacks and blocks coupled with destructible melee weapons; all characters including pve being solid, non-pass though and interactive (You could even kick your teammates if to stop them from doing something stupid. Or to relocate them.. or just for fun... ); jumppack mechanics; pve enemy units that are solid, cant pass through each other, have predictable movements while still being a challenge
I could go on but I think its suffice to say that despite all the hate there were unique and enjoyable things about this game,
so finally, I d just like to thank you Eternal Crusade, it was fun.

But before I get into the meat of it I should provide context... Before we ended up with the game we have Eternal Crusade was promised to be a Planetside 40k, big open world with (at least) 4 factions raging war with hundreds if not thousands of players utilizing a variety of classes, weapons and vehicles... it was even said to involve Tyranids as an AI controlled faction. The general promise of a 40k game involving massive amounts of players during fights is effectively the holy grail for the fandom. Did we get this? Well no otherwise this game would probably be hugely popular...
I wanted to talk about the transition of hands and how their target agendas changed to more short term goals rather than long term.... frankly there's videos out there that talk about this stuff as is. But I don't see much talking about what we did get. SO what did we get? Small battle maps featuring capture points as the primary mechanic similar to Battlefield's conquest gamemode, coupled with some other maps featuring an attack/defend gamemode. In terms of function these maps and gamemodes served well enough, but I don't doubt that many fans felt they could've gotten the same thing from another game and I don't blame them. The visuals of the game are done well enough, I only say well enough cause in other ways it could've been better I'm sure but the general look and feel was great though I don't doubt some folks were upset about the cookie-cutter copy/pasted buildings to which I must say I'm sorry but making each one unique in design is time and money.
The actual gameplay has been the source of arguments for as long as the game has been around and given it's a competitive shooter that's no surprise. But in practice the gameplay is satisfying enough, jump classes in particular keep the vertical space a dangerous thing to keep in mind, and it's a game that does make good use of higher ground espeically in the attack/defend stuff. Heavy weapon classes typically provided suppression and anti-vehicle but I confess this didn't stop people from using lascannons as snipers cause it worked really well. Melee classes made use of the game's melee system which is probably the only thing I outright dislike about the game and am willing to say was busted mostly the mechanic for stunning enemies but melee has been the biggest source of arguments anyways... Mainline infantry classes were solidly built and their key role was capturing points. Support classes existed and each race's support class played relatively different from each other but in general they acted as healers. They did also add some hero classes but they weren't that amazing. Altogether you had a good choice of ways to fight although the jump assault classes and heroes weren't freely available... I think the gameplay was in a good place overall though.
Progression I think could've been done better... especially on the more gameplay side of it... you earned requisition points from your battles alright simple but you can spend them on weapons or on supply drops... buying new weapons is simple but boy does it cost a lot alright fair but the supply drops are way cheaper... and are lootboxes containing an assortment of items namely upgrades and oh also weapon skins... including for weapons you don't own but these skinned versions are separate so say you don't own a plasma gun but you get some cool plasma gun skin out of a supply drop, then you can equip that skinned plasma gun and actually use it in a fight. I didn't care for this since since you could save up big bucks to just buy the plasma gun but you could also try your hand at the supply drops and hope to get a skinned version at a cheaper price... But there was also Advancement Points which you used on a skill/talent tree page and... bleeding balls there is a lot, you were best off specializing in one or two things rather than trying to spread them around... these points unlocked new pieces of wargear such as upgrade bits and better armor, decreased the point cost for some gear allowing your classes to fit more things into the loadout. These Requisition Points and Advancement Points are all tied to earning XP, which that might be good for encouraging participation but I think the way you actually spend these is a tad too much...
PvE... this deserve its own little section because PvE has to be the most neglected thing in the game aside from new maps... So how does the PvE work? Well credit where it's due this is the one thing that has the Tyranids and came in two modes... Lairs which acted somewhat like dungeons, you have to complete objectives while gunning down hordes of Tyranids. Then there were Hives which were a survival gamemode. These gamemodes weren't precisely bad but if you didn't have a group who didn't know what they were doing and didn't try to pick diverse options to fill out roles you weren't going to get far but it was fun still.
I suppose if you're reading this far you might want to know what I think killed the game, and while I didn't initially plan to talk about this I suddenly feel it's only right that I do... there's a mixture of things in my opinion that lead to its demise. The first and most obvious is the hype train, the hype train absolutely sundered this game's community before half of them even got to play it. Why did the hype train do this? Well if you recall I mentioned what was promised... and then what we got instead, a large portion of fans who were disappointed pretty much didn't play the game because of it are likely some of the most vocal members who talk about what a disappointment the game is, not that I blame them for being upset. The second problem... the perceived balancing issues... I say perceived because problems in balancing are easily inflated making it difficulty to gauge what is broken and what isn't and so because so much of the community complained about balance there's going to be people who quit playing because they think the game is imbalanced or at least switch to the more perceived powerful faction lowering the population of others. Which segways me perfectly to another problem; population, starting with overall game population it didn't garner that many players quite sadly so for players who used pop numbers to tell how alive a game was and if it's worth their time this was very discouraging indeed... and faction population has been very hit or miss over the months with of course Space Marines and Chaos Marines having the higher of the bunch, even then probably favoring Space Marines... this became especially true as time dragged on and game population dipped so the remaining players converged on these two factions.
All in all... this is just my perception of the game and I'll give a final bit before I'm done... I liked this game, I wanted it to be more, I still like this game in fact... if someday it got a community revival I could see myself hopping on that. But perhaps this game will act as a lesson for any future attempts at a massive Warhammer PvP game... nay not as a warning but an actual lesson.

After a few matches I kinda regret not playing it earlier. I don't how was the game from the start, how good or bad it was since release date, but this is kind of online game that I would pick up after the work and play for some time. It's enjoyable, and easy to start - sure, people who put more hours into it will always have bigger advantage, but since it's a team multiplayer game, even a newbie can do something useful.
I don't know how micro-transactions are in this game, but I'm not sure if it does matter since the game is closing down. I'm sure of one thing - I don't regret discovering this game, and until shut down, I'm sure I will play it sometimes. I don't know how many online games set in Warhammer 40K universe, but I know that I will feel sad once the servers will go off forever. So, I guess let's go all enjoy it while we can.

I thought I'd try playing again, too see if much changed, but I can't even play unless I want to sit in a match Que for who knows how long. Have to wait until the very few people playing are actually finished their whole battle.

What we have here is yet another cautionary tale of a game that was sold on hype and promises during Early Access, became free-2-play shortly after release, became pay-2-win shortly after that, and then laid on the floor slowly bleeding to death. This is another perfect example of why you don't buy Early Access games.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1439657702
At it's height the game was all about teamwork, coordination, and often large 100+ player siege battles. When it worked it worked. There were four playable factions; Imperium, Chaos, Orks, and Eldar. Each having about five of the same but slightly different versions of classes ranging from basic foot soldiers to heavy specialists to medics. And the gameplay mechanics themselves are heavily inspired by 2011's Space Marine.
I'm only leaving a positive review because of all the fun and memories and in the hope that maybe some day down the line someone will revive this game and give it the proper care it deserves.

Thrown aghast into the hellish scape of the Warp...Would it be so hard to turn this into an online shooter? Like the Spacemarine 40k games Multiplayer.
- Skip all the extras and promises from before. It may be a downgrade from what it was meant to be but at least Eternal Crusade would function and could be a ton of fun. Some Awesome maps. Modes. Some expansion of its content over time.
Items and fun DLC's to buy on steam/ with RTC.
Perhaps even have matches where the 4 factions face off on one battlefield.
A new idea, A new crusade, will find new life. Fans of Warhammer always remain fans and even now there are multiplayer matches going on. I'd guess no more than 50 players keep it going at any time xD.

-You can find a server with people
-You don't mind rubberbanding
-Having bad gear
-Frame drops
-No updates
-Playing one gamemode
The biggest problem of the game is that the developers promised to much and that the player base dropped of a cliff in 2018. Making the game free made only people angrier and it didn't bring much new players. Also forcing you to make an account before playing the game makes for a horrible user experience. Also having to pick a unique character name is kinda hard when all the names you wanna use are already taken.

It is not the game the community thought they were getting
With a lot of time, it has been patched into a very basic but enjoyable third person skirmish game with some influences from Space Marine, and has a very small community keeping it on life support.
I recommend it because its pretty fun for a free to play game, deserves to have its early review bomb balanced out a bit, and because all the ork players I have met have remained entirely in character in chat.

The devs lied about what they were making. They promised a Planetside 2 40k MMO, but then they released a beta that was just a generic lobby shooter with only two factions that were barely different from each other. Then they scrapped everything, and released this full game as that lobby shooter beta, but with two more races (Orks were supposed to be free-to-play, to encourage new users). They were quick to add microtransactions though, and they also said that any progress in the beta would be kept after (another lie).
The gameplay is pretty fun (40k meets Gears of War) but they promised a completely different game, and the community left quickly after. People were also mad when they made tons of pre-release progress that they were told they would keep, but they rolled that all back without telling anyone. I'd play a spiritual successor, but only if it didn't promise to be a completely different game. Lobby shooters are fine, especially when they're honest.
78 active players as of right now (on a Saturday). This is a dead, sloppy, unfinished game made by sloppy developers that would do anything to squeeze a few more dollars out of you.

no ork matches any more, the best part of the game to be honest.
no more updates.
no more fun to be had, since all you see is space marines 1 hitting you with stalker bolters (semi automatic sniper pistols) combined with aim bot hacks to kill you no matter where you are or how high you fly around in the air, or how much armor you have.
the only tactic that works in multiplayer to actually win any more is to simply throw your grenades and hope you get kills before being instantly one shot again by stalker bolters.
there is only chaos space marines and space marines, and chaos space marines are always out numbered by half or even 2 thirds, so if you like loosing alot to being massively out numbered then this game is for you.
no matter what, being one of 8, in an 8 vs 15 is never going to be considered fun, and once that happens over and over again, you can officially consider a game dead.
its dead folks, move onto somthing else,

Whether you are a Loyalist Space Marine dispensing the Emperor's mighty wrath on the filthy Heretics and Xenos, mid-air bullet detonating Frags cos you're a b4d4ss, spraying Ork guts all over the place with your chainsword or vaporizing swathes of your enemies with a Heavy Plasma cannon.
Whether you join the traitorous dark forces of the Chaos Space Marines with their Warp tainted weaponry and twisted hearts, to seeking the will of your dark gods with every kill.
Whether you become one of the green tide of Orks and answer the call of the WAAAAAGHHHH, gettin into a right proppa scrap with yer Boyz, Shoota's blazing till you get close enough for your Choppa's to get stuck into some 'oomies.
Or whether you join the once exalted ancient Lords of the galaxy, the Eldar (space elves) with their high minded, high tech weaponry, delicate and swift war craft honed over Millennia before humans even wielded the crudest of tools.
Whatever you choose it's worth at least giving Eternal Crusade a go. Choose what is best in life. Besides.. who wouldn't want a gun that frikking shoots monatomic shurikens!! {eldar ;) }
I don't ever write reviews but had to now so that people not scarred by all the broken promises (which now has zero relevance to them) aren't letting themselves be robbed by the negative reviews of some of the people who have tried it, your opinion might not agree with theirs or mine, there's only one way to know. Just try it!

This game was to be the first 40k MMO. During Beta, the developer abandoned the MMO development and switched it into a multiplayer online only 3D FPS arena shooter with a heavy lean into a micro transaction store.
At first release, there was somewhat enough of a player base to make it viable as a game. But rampant hacking by players and utterly incomprehensible game balance changes, UI changes, constant server outages and micro-store item revamping to push more transactions by the devs drove players away with a slow bleed, until now, people beg on the Steam forums for others to play.
This game is dead. Killed by abyssal long term design strategy, greed, and a disinterested niche of players.
Sad, considering it promised to be an intriguing 40k MMO. Certainly the art assets are spot on. Maybe one day we'll get a spiritual successor by a studio that can actually keep their alpha and beta word.
Stay far away from this title. There's are other options now for 40k out there if you need a fix.
