Schach mit Tabletop und Rundenstrategie
Warhammer trifft Schach

The 'plot' is anywhere from non-existent to rubbish, with tedious 'I want to kill orcs' speeches between every mission. (Some of which have animated parts that cant be skipped.)
There are bizarre loading delays for such a basic game.
Thematically it makes absolute no sense because it maintains the layer of chess moves that allows weak units to just one shot powerful enemies. (Which is so overpowered thanks to the terrible hit percentages that its pretty much all you ever try to pull off.)
Similarly, stalemates are really frustrating and nonsensical in a wargame. Ive a full team, there is one Orc stuck behind a barrier that I forgot to take out before killing a greater threat, and its a draw... really? Is that how a battle works? (Even more frustrating when the AI stalemates because you get a series of bad rolls sometimes across multiple turns that dont kill their unit before its walked up to a barrier and gotten stuck...)
The AI regularly seems to just get confused. In the same game itll move units in formation with all of them protected, then for no reason move its best unit right in to a completely unprotected kill spot...
The feedback from the UI is terrible. E.g. If Im missing 5 or 6 times in a row with between 75% and 95% chance of hitting each time I have to assume there are modifiers lowering my odds, but they are never made clear.
I could go on, but ultimately this game doesnt work both literally speaking as its buggy in many regards, and conceptually.
If you want a game with a chess like feel, without nonsensical constraints, without RNG that renders strategising largely pointless, without bugs, etc, etc, and for less money, just buy 'Into the Breach' It is a far better game on every level.

Chess with a RNG twist
The Good
- It's WH40K
- Character models
- Sound effects
- A lot of content
The Bad
- RNG
- Not enough 40K races
- Broken daily quest
- Only a few death animations
- PvP is dead
- Story
- Terrible AI
- No customisation
My Thoughts
To start off, I've played this game for quite a while, not because I love it, but because I like Chess and adore WH40K, but that is where it ends, the game is a complete mess, and it's ALL because of the RNG in the Regicide game mode. I'll begin with explaining what is included; you get to choose from 2 races (Space Marines or Green Skins) both have around 5 different factions within their race, mind you this is just a colour change on each with nothing different apart from slightly different stats to certain pieces, BUT in the main campaign you have to be the Blood Angels, There is 3 Acts within the story having 50 missions to complete, it has a main objective, secondary and a mission fail requirement (most of the time it's not to lose the King or Queen). This is all good as the content is brilliant, each game may take you a few goes and can last a fair while if going for the secondary objectives, The kill animations are cool but get repetitive after a while, the sound effects are good with the look of the characters being the best.
Now, the RNG...... this is why I cannot recommend this game, it is terrible, I get there is always a chance to miss, even at 99%, but, this game takes it a step to far, where by you'll miss 5 attacks (5 AP's max per turn) at 80% and then the AI hitting you with every attack, they'll move certain pieces onto a grid which no one would move to since it's a suicide position, but guess what.... they hit you with a CRIT and deal extra damage to a piece near full HP to take out 2 of you guys, You would only make that move IF you knew it was a dead cert it was going to work, which the AI does.
I honestly cannot stress to everyone how annoying this gets after a while, if only it wasn't RNG and the pieces would hit if in range, this would be more skill based than luck, as you can't plan anything because of the luck (or lack of) in this game.

Warhammer 40k: Regicide
Plot:
You command a Blood Angel strike force fighting Orks on a planet that I forget the name of. I really haven't played much of the story so I couldn't tell you much more than that.
Gameplay:
There are 2 game modes, Regicide and Classic. Regicide takes the units and movement of Chess and adds in both a shooting phase and a movement phase (although the latter is just the movement part of Chess, ability to remove units from the board and all). Classic is just your standard Chess with Space Marine and Ork models to stand in for the classic pieces along with brutal executions for removing a piece from the board (also a present feature in Regicide).
Graphics:
Actually really good. Some of the best models I've seen in a 40k game. And the animations are just 10/10, wouldn't mind some of them being converted into sync kills for the next DoW should we ever get another one.
Sound:
Also pretty good. Nothing as notable as the animations but still good.
Replay Value:
Above average. The campaign is long and there is a skirmish mode for when you just want to play against AI. Multiplayer exists as well but I have yet to actually play that so I don't actually know if it's populated.
Fun:
Depends from person to person. Personally, I like Chess so I have fun with the game however if you don't like Chess then you're not going to like this.
Do I recommend the game?
Yes. It's a fun 40k spin-off of Chess that also includes just normal Chess with brutal animations.
Side Notes:
-I'm partially doing this review to somewhat counter the amount of negative reviews just complaining that the game is Chess, which ya know, is what it's advertised as

You can play a Classic game of chess with a simple 40k coat of paint, you can play Regicide mode which enables bolters and chainswords so you can murder your opponents if you can't outsmart them, and there's also a story campaign which is basically chess puzzles where you have to win in X amount of turns or not lose a certain piece. It's chess but with a grimdark flavor.
With all the pleasantries out of the way there are a few things I have to mention however. The online component seems to be dead, the game is trying to connect to servers that apparently no longer exist. So you can kiss goodbye any achievements that require you to win online ranked matches.
When the game first came out there were promises made about having the usual cast of characters as playable factions; Eldar, Tyranids, etc. To this very day only Space Marines and Orks are the only two playable factions. This game has been completely and utterly abandoned. There's also chapters in the game like White Scars and Dark Angels but they are simply just recolored skins with no discernable visual differences.
If you're ok with knowing that this is strictly an offline game now and that only Space Marines and Orks are playable factions then there's nothing stopping you from having a good time. The game itself is pretty competent and the use of weapons and abilities really brightens up boring ol' chess. Also remote play is available so you and a friend can go head to head.

If you check the forums, there are devs there saying you have to purchase it instead. Which you can't, because it's not set up as regular DLC on steam, and their in game menu stuff doesn't work. It also keeps wanting you to log in to servers that don't exist and so on. Basically it's a games as service milk the fanboys setup that has been abandoned because I guess there just wasn't enough cash coming in.
It's a pity they didn't spend just a little bit of time to leave the game in a less annoying state and with all the content either unlocked for free or at least still available for purchase at a minimal price.
Then again, as I said, Games Workshop. They're insanely greedy, and they do not care about their customers in the slightest, so it's hardly surprising.

Warhammer 40,000: Regicide is a chess-based strategy game. It has an ability system that tries to add something new and interesting, but it ultimately feels like weird chess, rather than its own game.
As a baseline, all your standard chess rules apply. There is even a game mode that removes all the Regicide-specific mechanics and allows you to just play chess with fun animations. Still, the main game mode is Regicide mode, which adds abilities to each piece, as well as some for yourself. Most of the moves are generic turn-based strategy abilities, like shooting your gun, getting a bonus on your next shot, etc. While it isn’t particularly inventive on its own, the idea to add this to chess is novel and fun. It adds a new dimension that allows you to kill a chess piece without needing to make an actual chess move. Unfortunately, it is poorly implemented and rarely matters. This is because killing a unit with a chess move is instant, but killing a unit with abilities takes multiple rounds because of how weak abilities are. Your best pieces have better abilities, but they also have an easier time killing with chess moves, so you rarely need to use them. It is such a missed opportunity, and without it, your are just playing chess with gore.
Visually, the game is almost perfect. It’s chess, so the graphics don’t need to be AAA quality, but the short cutscenes when killing a piece are beautifully done. There is some decent variety, so it doesn’t get stale. The animations are usually great, aside from the occasional slip-up. It makes each piece feel like a unique unit.
Sound-wise, Regicide is great. The voice acting is solid and fits with the Warhammer universe. The sound design, specifically during kill animations, adds weight to each fight scene, making it more interesting than it really is. The soundtrack is a bit mediocre, but nothing abysmal.
Story is an afterthought, but it’s present. It mostly serves the purpose of setting up each mission, without going too deep into any lore or character development. It’s no Disco Elysium, but it still works fine with the mission-based campaign mode.
Overall, Warhammer 40,000: Regicide is a chess game that is has more style than substance. As a fan of strategy games with a lot of depth, Regicide is underwhelming, and I can’t recommend it. If you are instead looking for a fun twist on chess, or even just standard chess but with some gorey animations, this will probably be an enjoyable game for you, just make sure you know what you are signing up for.
5/10

I just came back to this game after a long hiatus, and played the single player campaign from the beginning. I was noticing that I wasn't gaining an XP from missions (it acted as if I failed all my objectives but completed the mission). I read some stuff online and it seemed like maybe not that big of a deal since it only affects unit upgrades.
After playing three hours and beating over a dozen campaign missions, I decided to call it quits for the night. When I went to the main campaign menu is when I discovered that it had not saved any of my progress. None of the missions counted as completed and the game now requires me to start the campaign all over again.
So unless you have enough hours to play through the campaign in one sitting without gaining any unit upgrades, you probably should steer clear. Otherwise I would have recommended the game.

Other than that, the campaign will bring a lot of frustration, because it is not pure chess, you still can be killed by gun fire. All pieces from the table have a chance to hit, and you will find that you will continuously missing with 90% chance, and the enemy will hit you in a row with 54%. I read some threads from a few years ago, and that this is solved. So either it was not solved, or it was much worse then.
Then you will find that for the extra campaign, you will need to go premium, whatever that means. I would have preferred to buy it as DLC, but you do not get this chance.
Some people prefer to not have the mobile practices on PC (I am one).
Anyway, I will not ask for a refund, because I like to keep a collection of everything I played, but I can not recommend it.
Read a lot before you buy this.
Hope this helps.
P.S.: Achievements are not working at all.

The RNG is... Frustrating. Some days you'll find yourself hitting everything despite 52% to-hit, some days you'll be hitting NOTHING without a 100% to-hit. I play this with a friend who I recently dragged (kicking and screaming, like a psyker to a Black Ship) into 40k. We both continue to confound and thwart each other with new tactics, new gambits, and crazy plans that never had any business working yet here we all are. It was worth purchasing.
I am irritated by the slight microtransactions of having to purchase other chapters and tribes though, for skirmish or the Ork campaign.
