Can't log in, and from the looks of it the devs/mods don't give a shit about the game anymore.
They also apparently delete inactive accounts so no picking up where I left off in 2017.

I wish they'd update the texture to vectors or versions of higher resolutions, the UI could use with an update, but the gameplay is solid and the references fun to see.

I played this game for 430 hours a couple years ago. Phaerys was still a server, and there were talks of merging it with Nox or something, one of the International servers. Needless to say Phaerys was barren and devoid of players. Gave me a feeling of the world being so much bigger than it was. Maybe that’s why I played it so long.
My character at the time only made it to level 85 (half of the hours spent on it, the rest on other chars and classes I didn’t like). I quit when I kept getting my Forfut dungeon runs ended by enemies putting me on isolated platforms… but also because I realised how low the Australian player count was.
Now? I came back for awhile. The new server is chock full of gamers. A very different experience now.
But I have to say, as positive as it was back in the day, and as happy it makes me feel that there's so many more players at once now... my review will have changed. Badly. Here’s my review of WAKFU MMO in end-2021:
While the WAKFU MMO is a good time-killer even if you don’t spend money on it, it suffers from in-game flaws, and downright questionable, maybe even illegal practises, on the developers’ part. It’s up to you if you’re interested in the game and want to give it a go. Just don’t forget - if you want to even try this game to see if you like it, you need to put all of your personal details on the line, and go through hell to cut the wire. How it stands right now, all it takes is one security breach, one hacker to get in, and every person who has or ever had an account could be in real physical danger, because Ankama demand your home address and more.
If it’s possible to even do it with this game and launcher, use a VPN or falsify your details.
I highly recommend looking elsewhere, as painful as it is for me to say it. This game was really something else but now, it’s risky to even play it.
If you’re still interested, which I doubt, read on about ‘The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly’;
The Good:
• A unique combat system. Battle on a grid using points for action and movement. A bit of strategy to it.
• Lots of stuff to explore. It’s a beautiful world. Astrub and five Nations, plus plenty of other locations to check out.
• Easily playable with Steam Link. As usual playing a game on Steam Link may take a bit of getting used to. But with the WAKFU MMO, it’s definitely possible, and I even so far as recommend playing on Steam Link.
• Fun with friends. You can meet friends in here, or find them inside the world of WAKFU. Either or.
• Loads of variety. With twelve classes and twenty professions, and dozens of abilities for each class, there’s a lot of choice for the player.
• Great time killer. Player levels can go up to 230-something, which is a whole helluva lot of time to kill, with professions and plenty of quests and daily missions all on top of that.
The Bad:
• The booster system. Booster gives you more EXP, Kamas, loot, other goodies, and the Mount Zinit quest line. But there are three different ones. And not only are they real-life timed, but even worse is they don’t give you more, but release the bottleneck on what you should have been getting. After every battle you are shown what loot you did not get because you didn’t have the booster. Quests show odd EXP, usually ending in a 7, that when increased by the value the booster pack gives, puts it to a nice even multiple of 100. The booster doesn’t give you more - it allows you to get what you’re meant to have in the first place.
• Oh the Grind! Well of course, it’s an MMO. But the grind is on a per-character basis which means all your daily logins, pet feeding, levelling, and everything, is specifically tied to your every individual character. This also means that you lose all of that time you have spent playing the game, if you delete your character, nothing carries over. Too bad if you want to switch classes or character appearance – spend money on Ogrines, or lose it all.
• Playing alone is difficult. If you want to play alone, it’s damn near impossible unless you are overlevelled enough to take dozens of attacks from multiple enemies, or use the Sidekicks - which you need to set up every single time you log in. More a fault of the combat system, and style, but it’s still an issue.
• Player-driven economy. You’ll see even the most basic of resources and equipment for high prices. You can get Kamas from monsters, but there are no in-game merchants. That means players decide how much things cost. Sure you’ll see a couple things appropriately priced, and sure this is an issue of having a player-driven economy in the first place.
• PVP. It exists - it isn’t balanced. Sometimes you’ll be challenged to a duel by somebody random. You might click yes. Or you might press Enter just as you’re about to send a message, which will accept the duel because the prompt takes priority. You find that you, at level 7-20, are facing somebody who could have so many levels over you, and you can hardly put up any fight. Not only that but in the Nations beyond Astrub, other players can pull you into a battle instantly, against your will, whenever they want to.
The Ugly:
• Signing up. If you want to play, you need to create an Ankama Account, which is not only time-consuming and stressful, but poses potentially severe security issues. They demand your details - lots of ‘em. Your full name; your phone number; your home address; and you can’t change these once they have been set up. Then you need to manually disable the “Ankama Shield” and log into the game itself, after already having logged in on the launcher and being confused as to whether use your email, real name, or your Ankama username, and put in multiple authentication codes that go to your email and/or mobile phone. What happens if Ankama’s servers get accessed by dangerous people? Every single person who signed up could be in danger. Including me. I didn’t realise how bad it was until I checked the reviews out of curiosity. Worse yet?
• Terminating your account. Worse than signing up is the process to terminate your account. Judging by other reviews, which you might have already read if you’re reading this one, it’s a nightmare. For those who weren’t put off already by the need to put such potentially dangerous personal information on the account, you need to bring proof of ID to terminate the account. I’ve read people stating that they have had to take pictures of and send their drivers’ licenses to terminate their account. If security and fearing for their personal info is why a customer is terminating their account, maybe it’s not the best idea to demand more of it. And shouldn’t Ankama have backlogs or something to tell specifically where the account was made, logged into, and all of the personal informations we just gave them to confirm ownership anyway? I’m convinced this is even illegal.
• Game Breaking. People know how to dupe their money, items... they inflate the economy, share their duped stuff, and can get people banned because of it. I recall accidentally duping an item because at the time it was so easy to do. That was three or four years ago though, I don’t know if it’s been resolved now, account was probably deleted anyway, and I think Ankama stopped doing mass anti-duping measures even before that.
• Customer Service. Apparently terrible. They only seem to care about money really. At least based on other reviews.
Now, I move on to greener pastures. Maybe I'll try to get some personal experience in terminating my account, for the safety of myself and my family. Get a taste of that infamous customer service.
It's a shame all of this potential for such a fun, unique game was squandered with such potentially dangerous practises.
I hope Ankama reads this. They need to wisen up.

EDIT:
It gets better. I was uncomfortable with them having the data they collected during this ridiculous and ineffective double-signup process and to delete my account and data they are requiring a PHOTO ID (front and back). Ridiculous and shady as hell. Oh, and the login for the support site is another separate login on top of the others and is of course rejecting my connection.
Huge data-trap. Do not even try to download.

Unfortunately, now that I have responsibilities and don't have much time to play, I find that this game is too grindy for me. Leveling up takes too much time (especially since it's turn-based), and the quests are too repetitive. It's also not easy to find parties for dungeons, but joining an active guild might help.
There's currently 18 classes to choose from, and a lot of builds + spell combinations you can try.
I do recommend this if you want a good turned-based tactical game and have plenty of time to play. It's a unique game, and I might continue playing it from time to time.

You have to create a new account on their website, not through the downloaded game launcher. It absolutely destroys your internet, and I could barely open my e-mail to confirm the account was created. You can't even play the game until having created a username on their website, and that doesn't even work. You can't even set your browser as a trusted browser without confirming it through your e-mail. (Oh and the e-mail never even loaded properly).
There were far too many complicated hoops to jump through. Game installed in two seconds, but was impossible to play. There's a reason it was free. Their website is more secure than a high-security prison, too secure, cause you can't play the game.

In order to contact support you have to give them a photo of your ID??? that's insane, I'm pretty damn happy I didnt give them my phone number, and gave fake address and personal info, cause this seems more like a data farm disguised as a game, looks nice on the surface but if its that hard to play your game and you need that much info, It's just not worth it in my opinion. I played the game for 2 mins and closed, wasn't worth the near hour i spent trying to get into the game

When you create your account based on your Steam credentials you move to Ankama Account Management where you create a Username BUT you are assigned an account password that you cannot see or change unless you provide your personal info (real name and date of birth). The problem is that without knowing the password you cannot play the game through Steam cause these Ankama credentials are needed to login into the game's client that launches when you press Play.
First of all, I get it that it's not much of an info but is despised that you require them in such a sneaky way...which service creates you a password you cannot have access to unless you provide some personal info, demand them at the beginning of account creation process since it is mandatory.
Moreover the hints that these info will give you the ability to access support features such us account recovery, etc. ONLY if you confirm them with extra ID documents that provides these info and your personal identity is another concern against this company and how they treat data. Of course it's a measure against deceivers but you're trying to accomplish that in a deceiving way.
We just want to play a game, if you need to harvest our personal information by default then ask about them at the initial steps of account creation and whoever wants will provide them, don't be sneaky cause you lose credibility and users will not want to play your games or trust your products.

-Has a beautiful and unique art style.
-It is relaxing.
-Fighting mechanics are chess-like in strategy and is rewarding to out-play your opponents.
-Diverse stats and skills allow flexibility and diversity with your classes play style.
Cons
-They don't provide guides of any kind (besides quick tips) so the player is left helpless.
-It is almost impossible to play solo and in some quests you are forced to have a full team of 6 players to progress.
-The game is grindy with everything you do: Be it crafting, levelling, farming resources etc.
-Enemies are tougher and craftier than you are in every way.
-The game mechanics and progression is tedious and repetitive
-User Interface is too small for my liking and I often find myself trying to click a button the size of 8 pixels
-Bugs are a constant problem be it graphical or technical

Hailing from french animation developers, Wakfu is an unusual MMO that stands alone in the market for game play. From the start you're introduced to a wide variety of available classes each with unique skill paths and playstyles. Each carefully crafted by Ankama based upon their animation series and polished for an unforgettable gameplay experience.
The Good:
Wakfu revolves around a square grid style map with turn based combat, Final Fantasy: Tactics, or Fire Emblem are some of the closest single player equivalents. You and your friends upon forming parties of up to six characters and will be able to wander the world in search of adventure in a laid back casual style that offers a variety of interesting things to do. From the very start you can see the effort that's put into the content. Little animations of monsters wandering about and interacting in the world are one of the more frequent easter eggs you'll come across as you find scenes of aggressive hens bullying roosters. Or small sheep using each other as trampolines.
The wide variety of both PvP and PvE skills, and the large highly customized character progression system that enables you to design your character exactly the way you want to play them, all come together to form an enjoyable and mentally challenging gameplay that could be compared to a chess match on steroids. While the PvE monster Ai is decent, the gameplay truly shines in dungeons, as you encounter dozens of unique bosses each with their own interesting mechanics and items, and in the PvP. While many do not care for it, the fact of the matter is that the PvP in Wakfu is by far some of the most challenging tests of your skill as you take your characters or party in a head to head battle where you compete against another living human being in strategy for survival.
This is in addition to one other major fact, this game has a fully interactable world environment. Almost every tile can be used for resource planting and gathering. Clans have the ability to design a private guild world and level it up through gameplay, customizing their 'Haven Worlds' to provide exactly the resource acquisition and various buffs your members need. The exterior world ties heavily into a nation system in which the various resources present in the world determines the benefits you and your nation gain. Thus ecoterrorism becomes your silent partner in PvP content as you ravage enemy lands for your various resources.
Lastly unlike many modern MMO's, the developer and publisher of Wakfu follows a different gameplay philosophy. Wakfu does not force you to go through all of its content. If you decide to play as a gatherer you can still obtain some of the best equipment in the game from dungeons and raids simply by buying it off the market or exchanging your gathered goods for it. Time gating is almost nonexistent outside of a handful of daily and weekly content added as catch up mechanics for new players. Thus a new player never has to be concerned of never catching up to those at the end game unlike other MMO's like Final Fantasy: XIV or World of Warcraft. It's always simply a matter of time put in until you can be there as well, and the memories you'll make along the way with your friends makes it even better.
The Bad:
The world is massive, graphically it's done in a cartoon style that tends to only fare decently within the European region. This has traditionally resulted in a low north american population for the game. While latency is certainly not an issue for this style of MMORPG, it can be challenging to find a regular group to play with. While you as an individual can field up to a grand total of three of your own characters, you still need six party members for most dungeon content of equivalent level. Wakfu is therefore an excellent couples game or game for playing with your best friend or group of friends, however it's somewhat difficult to break into as a solo player. If your interested I highly recommend looking for a clan to join and searching for other players with matching time availability.
Complexity is the other major issue you'll likely run into playing Wakfu as a new player. I do not mean this jokingly as Ankama has essentially built Wakfu from the ground up as a unique MMO. It shares very little in common with alternative MMO's on the market. With around a dozen fully unique classes each with no generic MMO class equivalent, this game can be overwhelming in the early stage if you begin researching class synergies and optimization. This is in addition to various features that optimize combat scenarios such as randomized challenges that can completely limit combat styles if you want to increase the rewards of combat. Be prepared to take time to learn this game, and be warned if that's something your not interested in.
Lastly, Ankama itself is a slight problem. This is a simple fact but, Ankama, the developer and publisher of Wakfu, is primary an animation company. They make an adorable cartoon and this game is simply a reflection of that. Too that end, it must be said they don't particularly pay the community of the game much attention. It's commonly speculated that the developers selectively tune out most foreign feedback as you aren't their intended audience, and to that end it can be difficult to be passionate about the games development since its more of a means to an end for Ankama than a true project focus.
Conclusion:
I recommend this game if you find yourself looking back on those turn based games wishing for more content. It contains more content than the majority of MMO's on the market, rivaling even Runescape for sheer depth while removing the stress of real time combat. Of my own 4k hours, I can tell you that I've yet to finish the game in its entirety and yet will recommend it over almost any other MMO out there. If it appeals to you, I highly recommend giving it a try because for the genre of turn based strategy games, this is the pinnacle product for multiplayer.

Wakfu is a tactical turnbased MMORPG with a really really cool setting and fun classes that you'll probably enjoy for a while. Unfortunately, you'd better enjoy grinding or have friends with you, because in the game's current state it's difficult to find groups for dungeons and dungeons are designed to have at minimum three people of player character-equivalent power attempting them.
Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but Wakfu doesn't have zone questlines like other MMOs. There are area objectives that pop up every ten minutes or so, but that's about it. Your optional quests that you actively pick up will just be to do the dungeons again, which kinda feeds back in to the primary issue. The game has no gameplay besides dungeons, brainless grinding against zone enemies, and torturous crafting due to the previous two problems (and problems of its own.) If that game had more population, that'd be fine, you'd have plenty of opportunities to group with people.
Of course, you CAN just pay for a month-long booster constantly to be able to use your alts to do dungeons with you. That sure solves the problem. Being able to control three characters of player strength, which dungeons are generally balanced around, lets you complete dungeons reliably! Wait, that sounds like I'm paying to win the game, though...

However, if you like me and like all the bonus content and cash shop items, Whenever something goes wrong Customer Service will not be there to help you. Assume any question you have will be no/negative with a whole lot of extra useless information that has nothing to do with the situation.

Spent 30m creating a new account and attaching it to my steam, got to character creation, game kept saying the account was in use and that no character was created.
Just wanted to try it with my friend, instead I'm leaving this game dead where it belongs.
Don't bother installing. Buggy waste of time.
