As we prepare for our first playtest in the upcoming Steam Next Fest, let's explore the core mechanics that will lay the groundwork for epic clashes between Runners.
Movement
The essence of Wakerunners is character movement. Gravitational anomalies on Earth have allowed humans to move faster, making the ability to control speed crucial.
While Runners can attack enemies at high speed and escape without being caught, they are pulled by gravity as they change direction, making each attack challenging as the timing has to be precise to land each hit.
※ All Runners gain speed as they run, so it is important to control your character first.
Attacks at maximum speed count as a critical hit.
※ The battlefield in Wakerunners is not so Runner-friendly. Try not to run into your teammates or.. jump off a cliff.
Combat
Maintaining speed is indeed a key for winning, but when you succeed in blocking your opponent's attacks - you will have a huge advantage for a counter hit.
Timing has to be precise, as blocking will stun the enemy for a short period of time - that's when you land a big comeback punch, hi-yaa.
(Be aware, an attempt to block bears a high risk but will definitely pay off once you succeed)
※ All characters have their normal melee attack. Range and damage can vary.
Landing a blow while your opponent is attempting an attack counts as a counter-attack.
※ Use block to cancel your opponent's attack for a short time.
If you're not in a position to attack first, defence may be the best way to counter.
Skills
Beyond the core mechanics, each character's fighting style varies, from ranged attackers to melee warriors - and supporters.
Each Runner has their own unique abilities, from their basic skills to their ultimates - these powerful moves have the potential to tip the scales in your favour when strategically unleashed.
※ Special skills can be used to counter different situations, trap enemies, knock them out, etc.
※ Ultimates are all built to be powerful. You can save your teammates, or even wipe out the whole team (if you're lucky).
All Runners are all powerful on their own - but winning in Wakerunners is not a solo effort; it requires a combination of skill, tactics and teamwork.
Distract enemies, heal your teammates, or take them out before they reach the objective.
Use your character's abilities at the right time to help your teammates and ultimately stop the opposing team's progress.
Hope this overview gave you a good grasp of how Wakerunners works.
Stay tuned - we'll be back soon with our character introduction post!
