This game is 14 years old, and holds true to it's age. While the camera and combat system can be a bit janky, it provides a quality atmosphere and feel to this sort of genre.
Haven't completed it yet, but it's fun to hack and slash at some Orcs!

- game adds phantom keyboard layouts just like the HL2 engine games (EN UK - UK keyboard + EN UK - US keyboard // besides my EN US - US keyboard I already had)
- game locked at 30fps, it's nauseating
- when you die you respawn in the village instead of the closest checkpoint.
- just a few types of enemies
- lame combat mechanics which become boring after 5-10 minutes
- combat is just not fun. fatalities seem ok for a few minutes but since there are just a few it gets old really fast
- from the same period as this game, beowulf the game is better than this crap. there's also x-men origins wolverine and prototype which were 100 times better

I would have given this game a negative review because of a nasty game breaking bug I ran into, but ill give credit where it is due.
You play as a Viking called Skarin who sets out to unite the Viking tribes to fight the Goddess Hel who wishes to destroying mankind. You got some magic to boost your damage and that of your troops. There are these grand scale fights against the enemies and it feels like you are taking part in a massive battle and everybody is doing something, not just silhouettes in the background. You free Vikings from the enemy who then joins your tribe. As for game play, you pretty much just run around, slashing things with your weapons, do some quests, rinse and repeat on all 3 islands. Its a classic oldschool console game and you can see it in the graphics and the way the game plays. Highly recommended to play with a controller if you have one cause the mouse and keyboard controls are beyond terrible. I actually waited to play this game until I got a controller.
Now about that bug - It prevented me from capturing an area so I could not progress the main quest, and Googling for help does nothing cause a certain new Viking-inspired assassin game came along to dominate search results. I downloaded a save file right before the last mission just to see the ending, didn't even miss much because the game is the same from start to finish. Friend said he will play the game and give me his file if his game doesn't glitch out, I might update this review then if I remember. Oh and you can't save the game yourself, you rely on auto-safe and thus you only have one save file - Not good when you run into problems.
6/10
Its good for what it is. If you got a remote and you like big Viking inspired battles, it might be worth to grab on sale. Just look out for nasty Asgardian bugs.

+Norse mythology rocks.
+Decent story.
+Blood and guts everywhere!
+Massive battles.
Cons:
-Gets very repetitive very quick.
-Un-optimized console port.
-Last gen graphics that were last gen when the game came out.
Viking: Battle for Asgard is like a mix between hack-and-slash action and real time strategy. You run around three different maps, slaughtering countless monsters and freeing your trapped comrades, sometimes going into strategy-ish battles to take over key points to increase your numbers. It's fun, but after the first time you do it, you've pretty much seen the entire games' playbook. Not to say that it's not good, the story is still cool and steeped in norse mythology with some decent voice acting. The graphics look like a late PS2 game and do not age well at all, and the framerate is locked at 30fps (which I personally don't mind but I know it's a big drawback for some). Also, the button prompts are still from the Xbox 360, and you cannot change it to reflect keyboard and mouse, forcing you to use a controller to avoid confusion. It's obviously a blatant console port, but what is there is still fun, and even though it's repetitive, it at least doesn't drag on enough to get boring and there is enough here to warrant at least one playthrough.

I'll keep it short, but I don't recommend the game unless you are just curious. It has some good set pieces with the large siege battles, but even those become somewhat the same. Outside of that each map is gonna have mostly the same objectives: Free soldiers, kill some dudes, summon a friendly dragon, liberate farms/lumber camps, and a stealth objective. That last one feel weird in a game like this and the stealth doesn't always work. Combat in general is OK in small battles, but since you are restricted to attacking one enemy at a time, it can sometimes feel like a slog. The upgrades and power-ups are a bit bland and even when getting a weapon upgrade, the damage output seems all over the place. You can attack the same unit type and one time it could take 2-3 hits but a different time may take up to 10. The Lord of the Rings games have come before this and that had more meaningful upgrades. So, it isn't like that time period didn't have something to compare to.
I can see what CA was trying to do, and for its time, to have large set pieces with lots of guys on screen without killing the consoles at the time is something to be commended. Maybe they could try again with modern graphics, design, and gameplay elements.
One more thing... Don't fall far if you decide to jump off to a area below you. The fall damage is very high and isn't very forgiving.

This game is coded to 30 fps. No way round that i'm afraid. If you want it to feel like 60 fps you must download a program called Cheat Engine, Click speed hack, and set it to 1.2 speed, this makes it feel like 60 fps.
Now for the review, It is fantastic. Its a gem. Its aged well apart from the 30 fps. You go round liberating camps collect gold to power up your skills and killing enemies by splitting them in half and chopping heads off Viking style. Whats not to love eh ? The game play loop in this game is addicting and it is fun to do. it never feels like a choir like some games. I have previously completed this game ( and got every trophy i may add) on Xbox 360 many many years ago, and it still holds up today so yea give this one a try if you fancy some hack and slash fun and to feel like an over powered god. This game needs some love.

You have to rapidly tap B to interact with everything except NPCs
Mediocre combat
Janky climbing and jumping.
Very repetitive gameplay
Bland story that's loosely based on Norse mythology
Only 6.2% of players have actually bothered completing the game
In the end, I only pushed to complete it because I'm trying to complete games from my backlog with as many achievements as possible.

If you're a person who is a stickler for graphics and very niche game mechanics this game will annoy you.
This is definitely a game out of the early 2000s but is one of the lacking ones of the time graphic and story-wise.
There is a lot to be desired and a few things to be praised.

Viking: Battle for Asgard is a huge mixed bag when it comes to quality. The battles are large scale and really create the feeling of a war, something often missed in games like this. The general quest system of liberating areas of the map as you go is done in a satisfying way. The graphics are pretty good considering the time period they are from. Unfortunately, the negatives tend to far outweigh the positives. The combat is extremely simplistic, repetitive, and boring. The basic strategy to combat involves mashing attack nonstop, then pressing block when you see an enemy start to swing their weapon. There is little variety in enemies, so this strategy works against 95% of enemies. The 30 fps lock can be a turn off for some people, as well as the awkward keyboard and mouse controls. Exploring the world is also tedious as you have no sprint button and the maps are fairly big. Plot is almost nonexistent and only serves the purpose of getting the main character into a battle. Overall, the game isn't terrible, it just lacks polished mechanics and ends up feeling mediocre.

There are also some strange stealth sections that just feel thrown in. Maybe they were trying to break up the hack and slash monotony, which is successful, but because it varies so much from the rest of the gameplay, you really never feel equipped correctly to do them. Those sections feel very out of place, especially when they also have a collecting bit thrown in to them (for a few achievements only) but are never explained whatsoever as to why you would be collecting the things in the first place unless you read the achievements ahead of time. You may stumble across one of the skulls, but would never know what the heck you had collected unless you read the achievements. Just seems poorly implemented.
Aside from those skulls, there really aren't any secrets to be found. I like to thoroughly explore areas looking for hidden objects or areas, but there are none to be found. You may occassionally come across a random sack of gold or chest (which only contain gold or a quest item), but that's about it. Because of this, there doesn't feel like much of a reason to explore (even when you're on a rather linear path).
Visuals: Because this is a console port from Xbox 360/PS3, its graphics are similar to that generation of game. As with a lot of ports, the game is very poorly optimized for PC. It lags pretty noticibly in large battles, it has no Field of View slider, very few graphics options, and the FPS is locked at 30. There is a guide on Steam that will help get the game looking better, but it still cannot unlock the FPS but will change the FOV. Before changing it, there were times when moving the camera made my eyes hurt but even then, turning the camera seemed to blur the screen in a nauseating manner.
All that said, I enjoyed the visuals. There were times when things looked really impressive, scenery looked gorgeous, and combat felt visceral. I think the Creative Assembly did a great job crafting a believable world. It felt consistant and nothing really felt out of place. Small details like fences looked like they really tried to make it fit and appear to belong there. Area layouts made sense.
One of the worst things to me were the animations. Some were just straight strange (dragon summoning looks like your character just collapses and goes ragdoll) and others were just lazy. Every time you fight a Giant, the 3 different Quick Time Events are animated exactly the same, every single time. The first time you see it, you think, wow, that's pretty cool; But after seeing the same thing 9 times, it gets boring and you're just waiting for it to end. Even the dismemberment kills start to get boring after a while as there only appears to be 5 or so different variations.
I think had they actually put in effort on optimization and unlocking the FPS; This game would have been recieved much better on PC.
Controls: I played it with a wireless Xbox 360 controller and it felt pretty good. I did not try it with keyboard/mouse at all so I cannot say how those were, but right when you load up the game, it specifically says it was designed for a controller. The controls are rather simple to understand and build slowly in complexity. The combat does get rather repetative as you end up using the same few moves as you progress. As mentioned above, the game has Quick Time Events when fighting tough enemies. They're not particulary hard the first time you do them, and then shift into mind numbingly easy as you progress because the pattern does not change. There's only one kill animation for giants, so there's only one pattern to use every time you kill one. It's repetative and lacks any excitement.
As mentioned above the camera was a problem. It seemed to have a habit of working against you any chance it got, allowing for a sword to your backside. Targeting was also rather strange and likes to work against you. Targeting in Viking seems to rely on auto locking on the target nearest to you, that's fine except when you're getting attacked from multiple sides and are trying to attack a specific enemy before they stike you, only to lunge at a different enemy and get hit multiple times in the back. What makes it worse is that even though you are swinging a sword and axe, you can only seem to hit one target at a time (unless using a special attack). Sure, your swing may go through multiple enemies (especially when they're clipping inside one another) but the same will only register a hit on one, which one can be hard to determine ahead of time.
All said, I still recommend the game but not at full price. If it's under $5 and you like action adventure, hack and slash, or vikings, it's worth it. It's fun enough, the achievements are quite achieveable, and has a run time of 15-20 hours. There are worse ways to spend a weekend. 6/10
