Players sit camping at the warp gates as soon as you send your ships out they will attack them with 1 way over powered ship that will kill all your troops then wait 8h plus for your ship to be repaired, just for the EXACT same thing to happen again 8h later....
Know issue with the game but devs refuse to fix it,
good luck to new players trying to start off.
the game is so out dated, it used to be a facebook game then they just copied to steam and left as is, so the windows in game are so small, the font is small. game is meat to be played on 1024 small screen, steam does have options to try and adjust to new rez but they just dont work and few years later still not fixed... so sad the game is dead was really good back in its day

I used to love this game... but it's just not up to my expectations anymore... Not to mention that the devs do not change anything that the players want.
Just do not start playing it, it's not worth it.

I started playing it when it wasn't horrible and now have invested so much time - and a fair chunk of money - that I keep coming back to it - more fool me.
Like and multi-player game, some of the folk you will meet are really nice people - but some have serious sociopathic tendencies and take great delight in making your gaming experience as miserable as possible.
The only way to really enjoy this game is to take out a mortgage and then spend the equivalent of the working wage of a brain-surgeon to keep up with the changes in technology. It's nuts.
I stopped playing for a couple of months and now my fleets are effectively useless.
So - keep your money, save your time, and keep away from this disaster area of a game.
We who got hooked are slowly backing away.

Patience, Young One
If you're into space battles, then this game is for you. Build your own bases, research weapons, re-fit ships, discover the secret of the factions. Do whatever you need in order to survive this crazy PvP.
Fight amongst your friends, or join an alliance and fight as a team.
Can you get the most medals and become an unstoppable force? That's your choice.
Oh, and BTW, you will learn patience quickly. Everything on your base can be equipped with a number of different items that will lead you to victory. Some times it takes less than 5 mins; some times it takes days. Yes, it could be madness, but some times the best things are the ones worth waiting for.

On the other hand, the aggressive way microtransactions are pushed, the utter waste of the DLC packs -- don't buy them, it's a scam -- the hardcore no-lifers who spend hundreds of dollars on the game so they can PVP endlessly, and the multi-day wait times without being able to easily get tokens to speed things up outside events...
there are less stressful free games out there

I don't know what happened to Kixeye, but they bastardised what fun games they actually had. This is one of many examples.
Barely anyone even plays compared to before Kixeye tarnished all good faith their community had.
Regardless, if you're getting into this game. Just know this....
it's pretty grindy. All relevant content is easily earnable but making said content actually viable is a different story. Mark-Up upgrades take ages to grind for. Skill barely matters in this game as most PvE enemies are guaranteed to damage your fleet and send you home with some repair, so no freebies. That's especially true for PvP, it's fun but extremely unbalanced and extremely onesided as pay-to-win players are basically given all the tools they need to beat you down and your buddies.
The content which you work hard to earn or buy will absolutely have it's value diminished in just a few months with every subsequent tier, putting you back onto the grind hamster wheel.
And as you can imagine, your wallet basically skips everything in this game.

No confirmation on spending coins. Dialogs doubled up to make it easy to accidentally spend them.
Battles give random damage even when none taken.
Half the time it will not click on stuff or everything is piled on top of each other and you cannot select the correct thing.

So ya, have fun.

fun: sometimes
hours of play: endless
bugs or lag: none
First of all, let me point out that my time in this game far exceeds the total shown. A couple years ago I spent over a 1000 hours on this game logging in through Facebook.
Now comes the hard part. The review. With over 1000 hours in the game I can't possibly suggest that you shouldn't try this game. But I must warn you. The game isn't free. Sure, you don't have to pay anything to install the game. You don't have to play anything to even play it if all you want to do is attack low level fleets or other players. If you want to advance you will need to pay money. A lot of it.
So what exactly is this game? It is an online multiplayer space game. Kind of like Eve I imagine. There is some sort of story to the game, but I have not followed much of it. What little bits I have caught left no real impression. The whole point of the game is to go online with friends and play together. The game does allow this. You can join one of the groups already existing or you can make your own group with your friends. Or you can play solo. I have played solo and joined an existing group. I also made my own group but it only had me in it. However, others could have been invited. Like all online games this game offers events, player vs player, group against group. You can attack fleets or bases. Other than collecting resources and building your base, that is about all there is to the game.
Everyone gets their own base, and only one base which orbits a random planet (you can move to another planet or even a friend's planet for free once a week). Though everyone eventually gets access to the same basic modules, the player gets to decide how the modules are arranged around the bridge, and what sort of upgrades to install. The modules include research facilities, a space dock, bridge, mining facilities, storage facilities, mines, and defensive modules. It is quite fun doing the research and deciding where to place your defensive modules, what type of weapons to install, how good of a shield without giving up too much of your space for armor, whether to use a missile weapon or beam. Arranging the modules around your bridge is also fun.
Arranging the modules around your bridge is vital. Other players can attack your base to loot your resources or get medals. The medals serve no other purpose than bragging rights. But everyone wants them. If you are new you need not worry too much. There is a level limit on who can attack you. At least a level limit to the level of fleet. So there are no death stars swooping out of the stars to obliterate your puny little base. That comes later. If you do happen to get attacked, you get a week where no one can attack you. After that week is up, you can go seek your revenge by attacking the attacker. Or you can move your base to another planet and hope your attacker doesn't follow.
Have you spotted how they get your money? Everything from research, building, and repairing your ships and base require resources. Resources can be mined from nearby asteroids or fleets that fly by your base. At low levels most of the resources you needs can be easily taken from npc cargo fleets. You can play at this low level for quite a while without coming across the first bottleneck. You will eventually need more resources than the low level fleets can yield so you will have to upgrade your ships to attack higher level fleets. This requires a lot of endless mining of low level fleets to get the resources to do the research. Once the research is done, you have to do many more attacks of low level fleets to get the resources to build that ship so that you can attack higher level fleets. Which means you have to wait even longer. This whole process could take weeks of tedious attacks.
For $10 you can buy one ship that will easily take out a higher level fleet. Or you can spend $20 or 50 or 100 to get instant base upgrades so that you can make your own ships to do the attacking. They give you in game coin that can be used for all kinds of other things like repairs, instant research, upgrades, etc. Cash gets things done quick. Cash gets you to the fun of attacking player bases or joining one of the events where you attack npcs. Or joining your clan in raiding an enemy planet. Without cash you can expect to spend a whole lot of time doing nothing but hitting endless tiny little fleets. It gets boring real fast.
It only gets worse as time goes on. You are constantly running into huge waiting times. If you don't upgrade your ship bay you can't make better bigger ships. If you can't make better bigger ships you can't attack better bases for more medals. Sometimes you can't upgrade you ship until you upgrade your bridge. But to upgrade you bridge you need more resources than your storage can hold. So you have to upgrade your storage so you can make the bridge upgrade so you can get your ship upgrade. You have to upgrade your antimatter storage separately so this means more time. What kind of waiting times am I talking about? Even when you have all the resources to upgrade your bridge you could be waiting for over a week of real time for the upgrade to go through. You may have to wait as long as this to get the research needed to build each part of the new ship. You could spend a month of real time trying to get a ship upgrade. For $10 a ship you can avoid all of this. Assuming your shipdock is upgraded enough to take larger ships.
So why did I play it for so long? A buddy of mine was playing. We joined a group together, raided enemy planets, raided enemy bases. We hunted down players who attacked inside their home planet, which was frowned upon. It provided for hundreds of hours of fun for very little money. As time went on the developers made it more and more difficult to upgrade without spending money. The group I belonged to helped out by attacking ships that had the antimatter I needed for my upgrades. When I came back I joined no group and had no help.
I am not against the developer getting money. No one can expect the company to stay in business for long without getting money to pay the bills. Since I generally spend $60 to buy a new AAA game I don't mind spending this on a game with so much potential play time. I don't object to paying a monthly fee so that the company can make its payroll. What I object to is being forced to pay for every tiny upgrade or spend a week waiting. Every major upgrade takes lots of tiny upgrades. Doing anything without paying money constantly or waiting forever is impossible. Before I finally quit I sank $200 into my last 6 months. Enough is enough.
conclusion: join a group for the extra help or get ready to spend money. Or maybe stay at low level raiding other newbs. Otherwise open up a vein and get ready for them to drain some green.

building a base takes resources and time....ALOT of time. sure you get a big boost early on but it soon finishes and time becomes a big factor for more progress.
the resources are mined at base, well 2 of the 3 required are, and gaining more requires wallet dumping or battles.
you send out a fleet of 6 max and fight other fleets in an auto fight that is ok to watch a few times before it becomes boring. so instead, you decide to stay on the current screen watching upgraded icons from the ol' 2D asteroids retro game (new when i was a kid...yep im THAT old) move around the screen while your own sits in battle. then you send as many fleets as you own to collect the resources from the defeated fleet and return to base to do it all over again.
there are events galore running at all times but the formula never changes. you grind for better fleets and grind to build a better base but its a bit dull on the eyes and gets boring fast for me.
play for an hour and you have seen it all (minus the timing which will rocket up to long long days waiting and the grind required to get new ships/commanders).
its okay if you like that sort of thing but it leans towards a thumbs down for me just for the sheer monotony

POST the startup. . . Ye..no.. you get free repair if only minor scratches of below 5min. . . but even the best fitted fleets, post start-up, will need 20-40min repair PER ENGAGEMENT! This means you'll need to have multiple fleets on standby.
The pay-2-win: It's hard to say, even that only quarters the time on some projects, so you're having to pay as stupid amount to get anywhere since everything time-based. However it is VERY IN-YOUR-FACE for deals, and every time to check back at base/outpost.
There's a VIP tiering system that'll reduce timing on everything, but again, an absurd amount is needed to get anything meaningful out of it!
The PvP, despite the p2w aspect the engagements can only be within a certain brackets of fleet levels. the restriction is removed if the target is flagged from stealing wrecks.
Base attacks also requiring this level bracket limitation. Each attack of course will raise a day's protection from further assault. Also, you only lose resources from those defeats, your structures, research and fleets are fine, just tad delayed for repair efforts.
Soo. . .
Did it disappear 2 weeks? YES!
Some gems in the sea of p2w?
One major.. but being free to play and it did disappeared 2 weeks, worth the fiver. imo
Keep playing?
Semi-yes, since everything is stupidy timed, best played once a blue-moon, exhaust your fleet and leav'em to repair for 2 weeks! (srsly, that bad)
Is it P2W?
Considering the fleet's bracketing for engagements, bases too, while each transaction is time-saving.. No-ish? altho, it is very in-your-face on everything!

This game is also accompanied by very heavy grinding mechanics. It would take weeks upon weeks to grind up elite tier 8 ships(if you are a casual player) just to get it nuked after the devs release a new tier as a middle finger to the community.
In conclusion, the game itself is great, 10/10 for the gameplay. However, the company (kixeye) that is behind it is a bunch of massive assholes and are literally satanic incarnations of EA games.
Also FYI, Kixeye is also responsible for the downfall of Backyard Monsters, the big mess of Battle Pirates and War Commander. All of those games are unique in gameplay, but the powercreep is even greater.
Also another FYI, I have stayed with for 9 years, ever since the beginning of Backyard Monsters, and had seen the downfall of it and all of Kixeye's games.

Every month you have to grind over 500 targets over 12 days with each battle lasting 3-5 minutes that is over 35 continuous hours hours of game play... and that is just to keep pace.
Target difficulty... you are required to build ships that take 2-3 days each every week and you need 6 of them ... you can do the maths there.
Developers.... they dont seem to listen to the player base, they have a set way that they expect to be played and with what ships, even tailoring the difficulty of each weekly event to the maximum tech that you obtained the previous week if not obtained in that week's event
When asked by friends what game i played, i would tell them this game but in no uncertain terms were they to play the game......
about 3 or 4 years ago this game was in its hey day... lots of players online interacting well over 20-30K each event.. last event they had less than 4,000 people/accounts participate...
this review is form someone who has logged over 10K hours just on steam plus probably the same amount on Mobile, browser and FB......
simply put DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME

In a bit more detail, this used to be a really fun base building & managment game, with fairly engaging and well done fleet battles as well as very good progression. the visuals were also great considering this started off as a browser game. The community was also one of the best I've ever encountered. However over time, more and more ships, items and events were introduced that encouraged spending real money, the amount of people who did so also started to affect the F2P community and ruin the game experience as people who loaded money into the game were basically unbeatable. nowdays the devs pump out more and more content designed with spending real money in mind.
You're about 2 years too late to start playing this, this game is dead. it was killed by greed.

Free to play becomes impossible after level 50+, a single ship (a fleet has 6 ships) can take 24 hours or longer just to fit with weapons and shields, and that's not even taking into account repair times.
If this games had a monthly membership fee with no coins, I would play it a lot more. Take down the time gates and limit micro-transactions to cosmetic items, level the playing field and make it a monthly Pay to Play model, and you have yourself a very interesting cross platform space strategy MMO.
Unless you're willing to drop tons of money a month to spend on repairs and refits, this game is not worth it. It has been like this for years, and it doesn't seem like Kixeye is willing to adjust their pay to win model.
