Über das Spiel

Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York presents the conflict between two vampiric factions: the traditionalist Camarilla and the fiercely independent Anarchs among the iconic landmarks and night lights of The Big Apple. It's a unique, atmospheric, single-player narrative experience, set in a rich, fully licensed, globally recognized universe of Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition.

 • Choose your character from one of several distinct Clans
 • Every playable character offers unique powers (Disciplines), different ethical approaches to certain issues, and dialogue lines
 • Character-oriented quests allow you to create your own coterie and shape your relations by reinforcing NPC loyalties
 • Highly replayable - choices made in the game are reflected by the game's changing fiction
 • Different variants of the ending, depending on player’s choices and a grand finale that will leave players surprised and eager to see more.
 • Suitable for both Vampire: The Masquerade veterans, and fans of mature narrative-driven games who are newcomers to the setting

The game does justice to the mature themes of the World of Darkness, and takes advantage of the excellent atmosphere of the source material. It also creates new stories, which, thanks to the full creative license, will be incorporated as official lore of Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition.

What is Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York?
Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York aims to translate the complex and fascinating world of vampires, their nightly struggles for power and attempts to hold on to their humanity, to a format previously unexplored by the brand - an atmospheric narrative experience. Think interactive story meets choices-that-matter; dark, atmospheric, emotional narration meets Telltale-like way of creating morally challenging dilemmas, answers to which are entirely up to the players, allowing them to reach one of a variety of possible endings.

How does Coteries of New York play?
You act as a newly-fledged vampire in New York. You have to learn what it means to be one of the Kindred in a huge, vibrant, contemporary metropolis. On your way you’ll meet different NPCs – other vampires, thin-bloods, ghouls, humans... and more. You will perform tasks that will put test your humanity and take part in a complex and often brutal struggle for power between the Camarilla and the Anarchs. You’ll build your Coterie and learn your undead companions’ deepest secrets… or see them abandon you. You’ll feast on the living and will ask yourself about the very nature of humanity and will feel the constant lure of the Beast inside you. You will make choices for the character, including which storylines to pursue and how to approach the different situations presented. You will take part in a narrative experience with branching dialogue choices, memorable characters - all among iconic locales of the Big Apple. You’ll be able to use Disciplines to charm, sneak, intimidate or kill and your choices will determine your path.

Not a bad game, great atmosphere for a Visual Novel. However choices in this game have no consequence and you get railroaded into the same crappy abrupt ending no matter what you do. Choice of clans and allies also makes virtually no difference to the story. The game unfortunately also has woke undertones to it (nothing major, but still noticeable). Lastly the game teases romance, but never actually delivers which is a major let down. All in all the game feels rushed, and lacks meaningful choices.
Extremely disappointing ending.
I don't even feel compelled to play again as another clan. Before digging into this game I half thought I'd stall a replay over my Toreador loyalty, but turns out I just won't replay it because I don't really feel like experiencing this story again, the ending or the lack of agency it exacerbates(a little beyond what I'd already expect from a visual novel). Other than that, the atmosphere and visuals are great. If you want a better story AND great atmosphere and visuals, go for V:TM - Shadows of New York.

Neutral thumb down here.

I am a huge fan of VTM as a setting, so I was delighted to see a story-driven game in the universe. The main story is well written, and the characters presented are interesting and endearing. This story fits the World of Darkness extremely well.

I would say to stick with one playthrough, though. The game is very much an on-the-rails visual novel. I found that my choices really didn't matter or affect the outcome at the end. Compared to Detroid: Become Human, which I just finished, this felt pretty unfulfilling. I'd say, if you can get this as part of a bundle or on a super-sale, go for it, especially if you're into VTM or World of Darkness. Probably not worth spending too much time or money on, though.

The biggest asset of this game is excellent writing, vivid fleshed out characters and great visuals. Even though there is only one ending and ultimately your choices don't matter, it is still replayable and very enjoyable.
I went through it 4 times to play with all available characters and go through all small side stories.

A visual novel based in the Vampire the Masquerade universe.

A good casual game if you just want to flow with a story and decide your fate. It plays sort of like a choose your own adventure comic book with gorgeous artwork and haunting music.

As a newly turned vampire, you are put directly in a political drama with conspiracy at its un-beating heart. You can choose from one of three characters; the Brujah called Eric, the logical Amanda of clan Ventrue, and Lamar the artistic Toreador (I wish there was a Malkavian character but I guess I have to wait for Swansong.). As you play through you uncover the mysteries of the undead world. You are a puppet amid an intense time for the Camarilla and Anarchs. I cannot say much more so you may uncover the twists on your own.

Play this game more like a book. Sit down and read through it and go with the words and form the situation in your head with the help of the art. This is not a game for those who love combat, this is a story.

Can't recommend, it's too glitchy. How a story game like this is glitchy, I don't know, but drinking blood doesn't seem to reduce your hunger, and it just straight up skipped a whole night of events on me, with no way to go back and try again.

I was very prejudiced about this game before. Instead of a game, I was thinking about this is a simple interactive novel to rob WoD fans. I was very very wrong.

Sure, it is a text based game but immersion is superb. Instantly pulled me in with amazing artworks, music and of course, perfect storytelling. I have played around three hours yet but I believe the game has combat mechanics also. Can't wait to try other games of WoD of this genre.

I'll try to make this as spoiler-free as possible!

So- I binged coteries of New York only to be met with a VERY sudden finale that is simultaneously a cliffhanger. Turns out none of your choices actually really mattered in the end, you'll always be met with the same and very unsatisfying conclusion. No where near the end did I feel like it was already concluding until it was too late. There were SO many loose ends and unanswered questions, NPC's having voice lines that make it seem like you either missed a major event, or as if what they were referring to was cut from the game entirely.
Here and there the game teases some possible/bonds with characters (romantic and otherwise), but even if you see them through to the end, most of them do not have an impact on the finale at all.
The plot gets driven forward much more rapidely than one would be aware of and will foreshadow possible events and re-appearances that will never take place. The game is then cut off by an entirely new big bad evil guy, seemingly out of nowhere. Said BBEG offers you an ultimatum that one will never actually get the chance to answer..

All in all:
The game feels rushed and unfulfilling, while only giving off the facade that your choices will have any impact in the long run. Multiple interactions with various characters actually felt involving but seemed to be what should have merely been the foundation of their routes, leading one to believe that there's so much more to achieve, only to be let down in the end.

despite the uhh... puzzling ending (seriously, its a wtf moment and wished the game got various endings but meh), kinda enjoyed the storyline. Loved the sound or music in game. Some are nice touch for in-game immersion and some, you just wanna let the game run and enjoy listening to it. The art in the game btw is godamn beautiful. (*cough* especially Qadir... *cough*)
Overall, play this game if you just wanna enjoy a chill or laid back game as being a young vamp looking for coterie. But if you want more explorations/RPG, go play VTM: Bloodlines instead (while waiting for the upcoming VTM game, of course)

I love VtM, but it seems to be a franchise more obsessed on cash grabbing than anything else today. I know White Wolf has always published books at the speed of light, but it feels to be a lot worse today. I wish they put more effort into these games. This game does shine at certain things, but the extremely linear story does not work here and just serves to annoy the player. The soundtrack is amazing though.

Not worth the money. Extremely simplistic, extended exposition with minimal character interactions, lots of choices with no meaning and a poorly designed interface. Way less charactr agency than the player deserves. I regret buying several of these games at once. A poor representation of the VtM world and experience.

Should you die randomly, you've got to play the whole game again from the beginning. Got to Night 14 on my second attempt with 3 people recruited already when my character got offed because I decided not to drink blood at every opportunity the game offered. So the game decided, I should kill a random person on the street and then get murdered by some specialty kill squat. Let's just say, I'm not going to play through all that again (even though you can use CTRL to skip through the dialogue super quickly). Thank you for wasting my time.

So, I lost my save game because I accidentally clicked on New instead of Load in the main menu and despite aborting with Esc, it did just overwrite my ONLY save game. Who designs a game like that?!?

Unfortunately, this is just the top of the iceberg of what's all wrong with this wannabe visual novel. Be it the crappy interface or the cheap side story structure. Naturally, facial expressions also were too much work and voice acting also doesn't exist. It's also baffling that the creators probably never read a VN before creating this, because even the most basic things like auto-play or skip are missing. And why do I have to click a tiny pointer to progress the story, if the rest of the screen has no other mouse interactivity?

Overall, the interactive backgrounds are probably the only thing where some effort was put in, and even those vary strong in quality. Avoid at all cost!

Just buy it if you like vampires. Every other review is full on spoiler because it seems like a lot of people kind of miss the theme of this game. The choices in this game matter most of the time but there is one aspect which most players couldn't handle mentally. So do yourself a favor if you are likely to buy it just go for it without spoiling yourself from other reviews.

Why is this a game and not just a free mobilephone app?
You just read and click on options and in the end it doesn't even matter...
*Linkin park starts playing*

-ending: rushed, weird and worst of all: unchangeable
- choices don't matter
- sometimes the option you pick does not match with the outcome
- Hope's quest line: I could feel my brain cells dying
- no replay value: I've played it with a female and a male character: no significant difference
- no romance (Come on, give mama some sugar at least...)
- the game rushes you for no reason, you can't even finish all quest lines
- no voice acting
-no animations
- most characters lack depth
- very short

+ overall idea with the secret vampire elite
+Qadir
+D'Angello
+ art works

It's just *so* railroady. When the literal only appeal of your game is a text narrative with some looping animations, at least have some kind of branching story. Literally what is the point of giving the player choice when ultimately they're only allowed to pick one specific option? I can buy a decent book for cheaper, even when this is on sale.

It's also got some horrendous grammar and characterisation (not very good for a visual *novel*, let alone one based on an RPG system) and ridiculously bad graphics options that don't work properly. If this is supposed to get people into World of Darkness, consider me thoroughly unsold. Maybe license your property to people who aren't terrible/lazy at their job.

I feel really sad writing a negative review for this game because I largely had a fun time through it.
The characters were relatively well realized; the art work is delightful and the story kept me engaged.
But the ending... Its such a weird ending. Its not a bad ending per se; It does fit the tone of the world to some degree but my gripe comes with the fact that there's really no way to change it.
All of your choices throughout the story don't mean anything in the long run because you end up at the same place again and again. Sure, you can become friends with certain characters and you can antagonize others. That's all fine and good, but when I'm asked to make choices, I'm assuming that I can try and make the best choices I can for my characters and this visual novel's solitary ending tells me that's not possible.
It breaks my immersion in the worst possible way because I realized that none of my choices matter and I wasn't even doing anything. It left a painfully sour taste in my mouth. I think this story might have been better suited as a novel or something; maybe a podcast-story type thing. Not a game.
I'm only thankful that I got this game in a bundle, so I didn't pay full-price for it and I got other games with it. I wouldn't recommend it, unless you're a super big fan of this universe and the game comes on a significant discount.

Honestly, I wanted to love this. The artwork is gorgeous, the characters you encounter are mostly well flushed out, however...

You can't play more than three characters, no choice of who you are really, and the entire game is an illusion of choice. There's absolutely no difference to any ending or outcome or anything. The ending was hardcore rushed. It just felt abrupt and pointless.

I've been waiting for a return to Vampire The Masquerade, and this just wasn't a worthy return.

I would like to recommend this, I enjoyed my first couple hours, I enjoyed building a coterie with a cast of interesting young kindred who all stood out in their own ways. Hope, Tamika, D'Angelo, and Agathon were absolutely the best part of this story, but they were entirely wasted. There is no payoff to building your relationships with these characters. And you're not given enough time to explore those relationships as deeply as I would have liked to.
This game also has a pretty severe pacing issue, specifically at the end. Plot threads are slowly introduced through the whole story, only for the game to abruptly end before any of them are really explored. The final scene was so rushed and incoherent that it isn't at all a satisfying payoff to all you've done up to that point. All of the quest lines that you're given the option to explore throughout the game are completely meaningless, and you most likely won't be able to finish any of them if you do what most people likely will, and try to split your time between all of them instead of going through them all, one at a time, in which case you won't have the time to meet all the characters or even touch all of the quest lines. Which I would argue would be great for replayability, except for the fact that it has absolutely no effect on the overall plot and how the story ends. If there's one thing this game does great, it's make you feel like a useless fool, and that nothing you do matters in the slightest in the end. I can't say too much more without heading too deep into spoiler territory, but I really can't recommend this over literally any of the other VTM games available on Steam.
It's a real shame, because there are things this game does well, but in the end it's all thrown away.

One of the very few games I couldn't bring myself to finish. I loved other VTM games and have enjoyed my fair share of slower adventure, hidden object, and visual novel games but this one didn't click. Nice art and ambiance but still lacking a certain je ne sais quoi. Dreadfully boring. Lacking a quickload or rollback feature is odd, imagining anyone would slog through this game a 2nd time is beyond my ability to suspend disbelief. If this game were a vampire it would be the thinnest of thin-bloods.

5/10 So-So

In essence, a choose your own adventure book set in the universe of Vampire The Masquerade. You get turned into a vampire and away we go. It features three origin stories, but only one ending, which is a shame. There’s a main plot that mixes in with semi-optional plotlines that you can choose to chase up with.

There’s not a lot to say really, you use vampire powers to get by and you get to explore a new world of the Vampires, however, the story is very short, like Werewolf Heart of the Forest; you can finish a single run in 3 or 3.5 hours. You can buy full-fledged 10-20+ hour visual novels for half the price of this, and you’d get more endings and more impactful choices.

That’s why I’m not scoring it very highly even though I did enjoy it somewhat. It’s also worth noting, that despite being called Coteries of New York, and despite the fact you do try to establish your own coterie, the actual in-game impact of it is zero. You don’t build up relationships once you’ve established the coterie, it doesn’t play a major part once established, and amusingly, if you fail to establish one, the story carries on regardless. That’s pretty poor for a ‘visual novel’, you’d expect it to lead to a bad ending or something like that. On top of this, the game doesn’t use some of the more interesting cast members, and then finishes off with a sudden trap-type ending that whilst amusing, doesn’t really hold up as an enjoyable ending.

Overall a missed opportunity really, if you’re interested in a Vampire story, buy this on sale, you can find it for 50p on some dodgy websites, which I’m sorry to say, is better than paying the full price it is priced at.

Bad game design. Meaningless story line the player is put through only to discover none of it meant anything.

Literally none of your choices matter, other than not dying before you get to the end. Then the game treats you to who / what was really going on and laughs at you for thinking you had any choice or chance to change anything.

Unlike Shadows of New York, in this game the choices matter more to shaping the story, and that way it makes it way more replayable. It was pretty good, the price is still a bit steep for a text game. Grab it on sale, if you're a fan of the World of Darkness universe.

The artwork was beautiful, the music was great, and I liked most of the characters, but something about this one just didn't do much for me. The story was pretty linear, a couple of times the game bugged and said I didn't know information I had just read, there was no save system... All the choices that I did get to make (i.e. spending time with certain characters) ended up being superficial to the point that I might've liked it better if the options were removed and more time was spent setting up the ending - which itself was abrupt, out of left field, and unsatisfying. The aesthetic was wonderful and a lot of neat ideas were thrown around (discussing religion was especially interesting), but the finale felt so detached from every choice you've made up until that point, and weirdly pessimistic for the goal of forming of coterie. So... thematically coherent for VtM I guess? If it goes on sale and you're looking to find a way to spend a day, go for it, but I have no real interest in replaying it.

Imagine a really short, really railroady, one-shot roleplaying session. You're given a goal, you meet one, maybe two NPCs, you interact with them for three or four scenes, you either achieve the goal or fail, and you're done, none of it ever comes up again. Now do that five more times. Then the GM drops a meteor on you, for no real reason. That's this game.

The game consists of a bunch of brief, optional side plots, and a _slightly_ less brief, mandatory main plot. These plots are almost wholly independent, and there's zero branching. The titular element, your coterie, is basically a red herring. You're (literally) given a shortlist of NPCs to recruit into your party, you do their sidequests until you run out of time, and then the ones whose quests you completed show up for precisely _one_ scene, in which they do essentially nothing and don't interact with one another at all.

Then the ending happens. That's ending, singular, completely unaffected by any of your choices, and none of your coterie even bother to show up.

So, no points for depth or plot structure. The writing is serviceable, I guess, nothing particularly memorable. Occasionally ends up on the goofier end of classic WoD. Like, you've been undead for maybe a week, and suddenly you're doing text-based Tactical Espionage Action, taking out a dozen Second Inquisition commandos in the middle of NYC, and then that plotline ends and the next night it's back to pretending the Masquerade is a thing.

The game wants your choices to feel weighty and irreversible, and also to hide how little those choices actually matter, and it really doesn't want you to think it's a VN, so it drops most of the basic usability features VNs have: no skipping text, no manually saving, no rewinding. It's a bit of a hassle, I guess, but the game's short enough that it doesn't really matter, and if you really wanna explore all the possibilities, you can always just manually save scum.

In summation, eh.

If you're looking to get a taste of the World of Darkness and Vampire: the Masquerade atmosphere, this is the game to buy. But, it's rather boring. Your choices don't matter (save for the obvious few that can get you killed), and you just get to watch things spiral downwards. I'm not a fan coming out of games feeling hopeless and without agency, so I'm biased against it. I think this whole thing would have worked better as a novel (no false choices, just strapped in and ready for the read/ride).

If you're curious about it, try to get it when it's on sale for ~$5 or less.

Not a big fan of vampires or the original Vampire: The Masquerade PC game, but I had a good time with this Humble Bundle visual novel.
The good:
Excellent introduction to a familiar world of vampire clans. I'm hungry for more.
Solid art, writing, music and ambiance.
Some truly interesting side quests (Hope's was a standout).
Three choices for characters from different clans.

The meh:
To tackle all the quest content, you need to do at least two playthroughs; this entails a lot of repetition.
It's a short game. I finished two games in 9 hours total.
Choices don't matter all that much (except when recruiting allies).

The bad:
The ending was rushed and left me feeling a little empty.
You get the impression there will be more role-play mechanics, but all there really is is the need to feed once in awhile.

Verdict: Not worth it at full price, but I'm glad I played and am looking forward to Shadows of New York next.

Although the ending seems a little lackluster, the journey to it was rather interesting. This serves as an excellent introduction to the World of Darkness (Vampire specifically of course), providing a plethora of encyclopedia entries that naturally come up in dialogue to give clarity if the dialogue itself does not provide enough context. It introduces you to all the main clans and many of the sociopolitical structures and laws that serve to maintain the Masquerade and some semblance of order among the different sects. Where the game truly shines in my opinion, is its diverse and fascinating cast of characters. Although the game clearly did not give me enough time to meet and get to know all of them within a single playthrough, it certainly made an impression with the ones I did come across. (I am a big fan of Hope and D'Angelo in particular.)

As for gameplay, it is a very standard visual novel affair minus the mechanic of having to keep track of your blood supply in order to use certain dialogue options and choosing the right moments to feed. Your choices obviously matter to an extent, but as other reviewers have noted, the end destination seems to be mostly the same, which is unfortunate. If you don't like visual novels, even as a Vampire fan, this might do very little to win you over. The art is gorgeous (both characters and backdrops and hell, at times the writing too, to be honest) One fun way to play it, as I did, is to read it to a friend or significant other and do a bit of roleplaying voice acting. (She was a big fan of Qadir for thirsty reasons and the voice helped. :P)

I did briefly start the second game, and I will say this one is worth playing if you plan on moving into Shadows of New York, because there are a LOT of recurring characters alongside new ones. I've already been pretty excited to see a few of my favorites in the beginning. But one last note on what this isn't. This is not a proper pen and paper World of Darkness game. You will not be rolling stats, deciding all the particulars of a character, and having to rely on stats and skills to make decisions to progress the game. For that kind of thing, you're best off modding an old copy of Bloodlines or probably starting a pen and paper game yourself.

All in all, a very solid experience and I would give it an 8/10. Highly recommended for anyone trying to get a crash course on the lore of the world.

While the world of VTM is fascinating, this game delivers very little on it's own story. The ultimate ending is not influenced at all by any choices you've made. Most character's vanish after their parts in the plot end. The most impact your sidequests will have is which faces show up for a brief scene, only to never be seen after. The game as a whole can be best described as a massive tease.

This is a great dialogue game for anyone whom likes those sorts of games. The only bad part is you have no choice in how it ends and you can’t do all of the side missions. Pick wisely when doing missions, you’ll want some friends at the end so at least do one of the main missions that your mistress sends you on. You can also die really quickly if your character is quick to anger. The story is good though.

I'm off two minds about this one. On one hand, it's a great introduction to this world and much of the lore surrounding it, presented with great art and neat music. On the other hand, it railroads you into one conclusion where your choices seemed to matter, except they didn't, and the story just ends, sort of abruptly.

It oozes style, it's entertaining for the few hours it lasts, and the side stories are great, yet ultimately the main plot is rushed to the point it doesn't do justice to the universe it's presenting. I hear it was made on a shoestring budget and it sort of shows, nowhere more obviously on how the main characters differ: even though at the start of the story it's implied their different clans will result in different outcomes on similar scenarios, that simply doesn't happen and the (few) differences between them are soon set aside and forgotten.

Similarly, the companions you make through some of the side stories bring absolutely nothing at the end except for some different lines. Yet, you are introduced to their skills and how useful they will be in the upcoming days for a pay off that never comes, like an idea dropped because there was no time to implement more scenarios.

Still, that first playthrough... I was rather absorbed by it. What it does well is certainly worth experiencing. The sequel (Shadows of New York) is supposedly much better about the shortcomings of this one, but if you already own Cotteries or can find it cheap, it's a good snack. Just don't forget to hunt for a better meal afterwards.

I'm a big Vampire fan, and an even bigger VN fan, and the positive reviews on this game are completely undeserved. I truly believe the people leaving good reviews have never actually played a decent VN before, let alone a good CYOA.
You are presented with choices in this game, which ultimately don't matter because even if you ignore a path entirely it will be referenced in another path. Furthermore, the ending of the game is a big hurrah about how your choices never actually mattered. Literally felt like the end was written by a snotty 10 year old who is only DM'ing expressly to bully his friends. The game also had some serious, game-breaking bugs---audio screwing up, text being misplaced, scenes skipping, entire days skipping (btw, you have a limited number of in-game days to accomplish your goals which, again, don't matter)...this game was seriously broken when I played. There have been several updates since then, but reading the more recent negative reviews---these game-breaking issues were never fixed. Seriously, I've played games thrown together in Ren'Py in two days that were massively better written and better optimized than this. It felt to me like the developers have never played a VN before, let alone built one themselves.
This game is not worth the price, I honestly wouldn't even recommend it at half price. The only good thing I can say about it is the artwork is nice. I did also get attached to two of the NPC's, but the game is so very short---I couldn't understand why there was a goal of building a relationship with these characters at all since it just ends so quickly.
Not to mention, the writers weren't very brave with their writing. It's a very generic vampire story with very generic characters. Edgy Tremere, Crazy Malk
who totally could have been interesting if they wrote her as an actual public streamer instead of just making her audience...herself
and forgettable ghouls and snobby elder vampires. The only interesting thing about the game were the Nossies. Honestly, if the game was longer, and the individual stories of these characters established and explored more, it really could have been a neat ride. But as it is, Coteries of New York is just bland and broken.

I still cannot believe it's a full game and not just an episode... 7h I got on two playthroughs.
Just when I started getting into my character and build relationships with other characters, thinking there will be plenty of time to actually role play, the game suddenly... ended. Apparently you cannot play as much as you want or finish questlines if you try to spread your focus around, cause there is a fixed amount of days in-game, that ends in the same, very abrupt, very disappointing manner.
Moreover - on the first playthrough the game blocked on me when one of the quests didn't start, so yeah.

The game is polished, but the story feels rushed and unfinished. I can also add that if you think on it hard enough it doesn't really make sense: a VERY elaborate plot to reach a purpose that could have been reached in a million simpler ways (and no, it's not refined vampire boredom, it's just bad writing)

Introduction

Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York serves as a pleasant introduction to the World of Darkness, which is a grimmer version of our world, filled with supernatural beings, vampires in this case, who secretly live among ordinary people. While I am not familiar with the original tabletop games, I enjoyed playing Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines years ago, so I already knew this world a bit, even though I admittedly forgot a thing or two. Luckily, this visual novel manages to explain the crucial universe’s aspects engagingly without making you feel lost or overwhelmed. Well, I should not do so either, so let us dive into the review!

Story

Before starting this mature adventure, you have to choose one from three diverse characters whose personalities align with their vampiric clan. I started with Amanda because playing as bossy cold-hearted vampire woman appealed to me the most. Due to her leadership skills, she naturally belongs to the Ventrue clan. It seemed like the right choice for me, as the other options were a rebellious activist and depressed artist. After that, I could finally venture into the lively city of New York.

At the very start, you are still a human, minding your own business and going through your daily routines. That changes soon. One day, you get a visit from a mysterious person who is interested in working with you. While you are listening to his compelling proposition, he moves closer to you. You notice his unnaturally glazing eyes. He grabs you with his cold hands, and you notice that his teeth are getting longer. And sharper. You feel them on your neck, and then there is only darkness.

That would be rather a quick end, but believe me, it is only the beginning. You wake up and find out that you are hungry. No, not hungry, but ravenous. For human blood. Your character might be confused, but you already know what happened. From now on, you play as a vampire, and you will have to find a way to survive in this new yet the same world. This tension, which started in the prologue, is present for the whole game, which is about seven hours long if you are a bit slower reader.

Not only that the plot manages to stay captivating the whole time, but new, compelling characters and sudden twists make the playthrough gripping from start to finish. Even though you want to find the vampire that turned you, the story shifts its focus to other characters and its world soon. Yet, this sudden change of pace actually works pretty well. That way, the game manages to introduce you to its world, to explain what exactly are those vampires, their clans and their relationships. And it does so briefly without overwhelming you with tons of information.

Meeting new characters and doing tasks for them was definitely my favourite part of this title. Each one of them is unique, with their own motives and fascinating background to discover. I adored Hope, as her bossy attitude clicked with Amanda’s one, thus creating a great duo. She is not afraid of using the new technologies we are enslaved by, meaning phones and social media. You are not assisting them out of the kindness of your heart because you expect their help in return.

What I truly enjoyed is that the game forces you into uncomfortable situations. Being a vampire changes the way you live and with whom and how will you interact. Sure, it is not your fault that you became the vampire, but the feeling of hurting others clueless people stuck with me, and your character is getting used to it too. You have to survive somehow, though. The fact that you cannot finish every side quest, thus you have to decide which are worth it for you, just adds to that feeling.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2425490186
Feeding on others’ blood is the one and only aspect you have to keep in mind during reading. Throughout the time, an option to feed yourself, meaning drink blood from some poor person, appears. You can choose not to do it, but it comes with a price. Starving for a longer time will lock some of the dialogue options, as you will be too weak to perform them. I like this a lot because it tempts you to hunt strangers.

If you do not feast on someone for a longer time, your character might turn desperate, wanting human’s blood immediately, and thus impatiently killing someone on their own. That leads us to the Masquerade, which is not just a fancy word but one of the most important rules for vampires. You have to be discreet and try to stay hidden. However, even with the abovementioned desperate murder, I never lost the game or had to reload to some checkpoint. Thus I slowly realized that your choices do not matter.

Sure, the way you play affects your path to your goal, but the ending always has the very same outcome, even if you try to go against the game. I decided to finish the Coteries of New York with the other characters, and while there were some different dialogues, it always ends the same way. Now, it is not upsetting, and I do not feel that it would ruin the whole time I spent with it, but it still leaves a bittersweet taste in my mouth.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2425488751

Audiovisuals & Performance

What makes this title appealing at first glance are its visuals, which are just amazing. As the plot mostly takes place during the night, there are lots of lights, neons and such. Backgrounds are not static, so you will often see sweet little details like raindrops, moving eyes, flashing lights, and more. Sound effects and grim compositions fit the game’s theme perfectly. All in all, I cannot really say anything negative about the audiovisuals, as the atmosphere they help to create is breathtaking.

My performance section will be rather obligatory this time, as I obviously did not have any problems. This title ran flawlessly on i5 8300H, GTX 1060 6GB, and 16GB RAM, at 1920x1080 resolution without any issues whatsoever.

Conclusion

Despite my problems with the ending, I can still wholeheartedly recommend Coteries of New York to both fans of the World of Darkness, as well as to the newcomers who are interested in the vampiric setting, as it feels like a competent introduction.

Most of the time I steer clear of visual novels, not interested in romances and/or manga aesthetics. I decided to give Coteries of New York a try, just because I have fond memories of Vampire: The Masquerade from the old days.... and I can’t say I’m disappointed.

”Coteries...” drops You right in the middle of World Of Darkness and as a newly turned vampire, you’ll discover it’s unwelcoming embrace. It’s all here - intrigues, scheming, politics, backstabbing... Vampire society in a nutshell.

It is a decent storyline, very good introduction to the world and a good refreshment, for those that weren’t particularly interested in World of Darkness throughout the years.

And yes...addressing the elephant in the room - there’s only one ending. During the game, there’s sidequests you can choose from and also main storyline that’s a bit “customisable”. No real failstates either. For fans of a genre, that can be little outrageous. Bear that in mind if that’s a problem for You.

Still, Coteries of New York oozes with atmosphere. Maybe not a good choice for hardcore visual novel enthusiasts... but a good experience nonetheless.

Also, splendid soundtrack by Reikowski/Lubos. Thumbs up!

I'm a fan of Vampire: The Masquerade, White Wolf and World of Darkness, so it was easy for me to enjoy this game. If you like the world, you'll enjoy the game, just keep in mind its more of a visual novel than a game. Sadly there is no skilling in it or anything. Its basically a choose your own adventure with lots of reading. There were some typos in the text, and there was more than one ultra-far alt-left reference which made me throw up in my mouth a little... (The Brujah apparently went from being freedom fighters to RedGuard BLM/ANTIFA fascist ideologues...) Even still, I enjoyed it. I particularly loved Benoit's story and loved the chance to talk about faith as a vampire, on of the reasons Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption is one of my favorite games (only Redemption is an actual game lol.) So yeah, if you like to read and like the lore of the Masquerade universe, you'll probably have fun with it.

Introduction

Coteries of New York is based on the setting of Vampire the Masquerade, a renowned tabletop RPG that later was adapted into two video games in the early 2000s. I never played these two games and knew nothing about the Vampire the Masquerade before I played. I don’t even know a lot about vampires other than some Mary Sue vampire love stories like Twilight and True Blood I watched in my teenage. As far as I can tell, Vampire the Masquerade is not those soft love stories, but a hardcore vampire world focusing on vampire society, cliques, ideas, mysteries, schemes, and clashes, which is my liking.

Knowing what the source material is about, you get a rough idea of what Coteries of New York is. It is a visual novel about a new vampire who was turned unwillingly and forced to go into the vampire society. To survive, you as the protagonist, need to build your coteries (your vampire association), deal with troubles and unravel mysteries around you.

It took me 10 hours for the first playthrough because I am a slow reader, and another 3.5 hours for the second playthrough by skipping most dialogue I have already read. For a visual novel, it is a relatively long one.

Story

Coteries of New York has three different characters to choose at the beginning, which correspond to three different clans (vampire bloodlines). Three characters have different abilities and different related stories, but they are essentially the same as characters do not affect main and side events and how they play out, it is just a nice little addition.

The story is a mixed bag. On one hand, it has a strong start. It does a good job of unfolding the vampire society to players and creating a cold and alienated atmosphere, setting the tone of the whole story. There is some exquisite writing with delicate choices of words making me feel like I was reading a Shakespeare or something like that. And I genuinely enjoyed the story of D'Angelo. On the other hand, perhaps the story is written by different persons, there is some mild inconsistency in characteristics, mainly the character of Sophie Langley, and the exquisite writing is not from the start to finish as most of the story does not have this treatment. The biggest problem is most of the story is just not engaging at all. Perhaps it is due to involvement. At the start, the story is about you. For the rest, it is about other persons who you cannot care less. It is like throwing irrelevant stuff to you since you are merely an observer, figuratively speaking, who play so little in the events.

You get to choose which events you participate in, but you cannot experience all in one playthrough as the main event will happen at some point. I usually avoid non-linear narrative games like this because implementing a non-linear narrative mechanic to approach the story is usually unengaging as the focus shifts too much. And they usually fall into the category of trying to achieve too much at once. Coteries of New York talks about the story of different characters, the origin of vampire, the stalker, the reporter. The center of the story shifts so often that it further drives down the engagement. To be honest, all I want is a decent story about my MC (main character) and I couldn’t care less about the rest.

Artwork and Sound

Artwork in this game has an oil painting style with a little use of bokeh effect. It is aesthetic and well accommodates the mysterious and alienated tone of the story. The most important character, Sophie Langley, has 4 different portraits, the rest of characters have only one portrait and they are reused over and over again. So are the pictures of different environments. Maybe I am spoiled by other visual novels, artwork in this game is just lazy in terms of the number and variety. They cannot vividly show how the story goes and what characters are doing. Artwork is an important aspect of a visual novel, and even more important than the story in terms of sales. For example, Nekopara, one of the best sellers in the visual novel genre, has a crappy story but beautiful and abundant artwork. I am not saying that this game should follow Nekopara and fully dedicate to artwork, because they are not the same sub-genre, but at least it would be better if the dev have put more effort into artwork and maybe the game could have been sold better.

This game has a superior sound effect than many visual novels I have ever played. Lots of sounds are reused multiple times, but they are brief so they never annoy you. Besides, they are very on point to seize the atmosphere at that time being.

Choice

It is a common issue in the genre that the choices do not mean what they mean on paper. Players think the choice means A, but it actually means B because the choice description cannot fully express what it intends to do. They can be infuriating since the description misleads the players to make choices they do not want to.

It usually happens for two reasons. One is the dev want to pursue the brevity of words, so they cut down words that help express the meaning more precisely and therefore affect the effectiveness of language. The other reason is the designers are total pr!cks (no offense) who add unnecessary and additional actions that do not imply in the description into a choice. I expected the dev of this game, as a more “professional” developer, can address this issue better, compared to adult visual novels from Patreon I usually play. Sadly, they did not and they made both two mistakes. The ambiguity of description and unpredictability of action can be the major factors why you make the wrong choice in this game.

What I enjoy about making choices in visual novels is that there are clues that you can find in conversations that support you to make the best or right choices. These clues can be something mentioned in the past or the personality of a certain character etc. In this game, some choices do follow this logical design, which is great, but many choices just come out of nowhere. I could not find explanations why these choices pop out and they do not follow the logical design, meaning you are just making wild guesses without any clues. This is another weakness of choice design in this game.

Finally, it is about the choice and the ending. It might come to spoiler territory so read at your discretion.
I played the game twice and I have the same ending. According to what I read on the Internet, this game seems to only have one ending (the end ending, not the suicidal endings at the beginning) despite any choices you made. I can appreciate this kind of design showing the MC is just a pawn and powerless to change the events. I am not against this ending if it is used in any other genre. However, for a visual novel, making choices consist of most of its gameplay elements. Having just one ending means all the choices players made are in vain since they matter nothing.
For a game like this with a focus on adventure, it is a bad design choice.
What is the point of an adventure if everything is just settled and the choices you made are meaningless?
Verdict

Coteries of New York is not a satisfying experience. It has something good, but there are more questionable design choices. On top of that, it has an unengaging story that tries to achieve too much at once. It is hard to recommend to anyone.

This game could have been excellent. Some of the stories and side characters are really entertaining, the writing is in general pretty fun and thematic. So what's the issue?

The game is pointless. You cannot affect the ending in the slightest - you either fail to reach it by not managing your hunger, or you reach the ending, find out nothing you did mattered and none of your interactions could change it. The coterie you gather has nothing to do with the plot. Those side characters? Pointless. You can speed run the entire game, never speak to or engage with any of them, and the ending is exactly the same. And it's... well, it's not even a dramatic twist. A character you see briefly twice turns out to be behind everything. There's no real reason behind it, and honestly, the character is probably the worst and least interesting in the whole thing.

So - this game would easily have been an 8 or 9 out of 10 if it hadn't totally wasted its premise on a silly twist designed to put you in your place as ultimately irrelevant. As it is? 2/10 for decent graphics and a legitimately atmospheric soundtrack.

Intro

Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York is a visual novel set in the universe of Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition. I didn't have any knowledge of the said universe, but a quick google search shows that the work was derived from a tabletop game. Since I never played the tabletop version before, I won't try to compare the game with it and review the game as it is.

Pros:
- Several dialogue choices that lead to the same result
- 3 different characters with minor details

Cons:
- Unable to skip dialogues

Should you buy this game?

Yes.
If you enjoy visual novel games with in-depth world-building and character interactions, buy this game.

In-Depth Review

Graphics

Being a visual novel game where you need to pay attention to aesthetics, the game doesn't disappoint. Backgrounds look realistic with high attention to the details. Not only that, the heavy use of lighting in most areas gives more atmosphere to the environment, especially with the night setting. The game also seems to give an extra effort to this department by animating minor parts such as dripping rain and glowing eyes. Characters are also looking beautiful with the painting-like, realistic style - you won't even notice that it's a 2D image from afar due to how realistic it is.

Story

The tabletop version has a good core in its story building and the game does a good job of explaining it to the players. The game will flesh out the details little by little, throwing new terms here and there as it goes on. A dictionary that holds all information about the universe's terms are also available should you decide to revisit them.

Some dialogues will branch at some point, forcing you to choose an option. While this matters at the beginning of the game, even leading you to 2 bad endings, other branching paths will lead you to the same decision. However, choosing different dialogues might give you more information either about the world-building or the other party's true colors - it was interesting to see how each dialogue plays out. Surprisingly, each decision flows smoothly with the next dialogue, except for one occasion.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2364577409

The game seems to take notes of word usage depends on who is talking. People in high standing will use exquisite words that suit their status while people in lower standing will tend to curse as they talk. Despite the different word usage, everything flows smoothly and easy to understand except for some occasions where I had to translate some exquisite words that I didn't know.

Although you'll mostly be kept in the dark about what happened in the main story, the game lets you focus more on the side stories instead. There are 7 side stories that you can play, each having a different focus and interactions. You'll learn more about world-building, meet new people with unique characteristics, or see a unique side of the vampiric society. When all is said and done, the game will return to the main story, and you'll be in for a surprise. There might be slight plot holes and confusion to some parts of the story, but the plot twists outweigh more than those at this point.

The Game

Mechanics
As a vampire, you need to constantly drink blood to survive. The game will give you an option to drink whenever available, and failing to so after several days will leave a blood mark on the screen. Ignoring this warning will result in losing control near the end of the night, giving risk to your exposure by killing someone near to your home. I didn't know if it's possible to get a game over if you constantly doing this, but this never happens to me unless if I did it on purpose. There was a time when I was close to losing control though since there was one chain quest that doesn't give an opportunity to drink in all of its quests.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2364577448

Side Quests
Side quests take most of your playtime in this game. You have 2 actions per night which can be used to either recruit up to 4 companions or do other side quests unrelated to it. All side quests will take more than one visit to finish and sometimes, the main quest will also take one or both actions in a single night. It's possible to fail any companions' side quests if you made a bad first impression on the character and even if you manage to convince all of them, you won't be able to recruit everyone in a single playthrough. The most that I could recruit was 3, and that's after ignoring other side quests that are not related to companions.

It was interesting to do the side quests and experience the different characteristics of everyone that you meet. The game always keeps me engaged with the story and the story tends to be unpredictable - there are times where you have to decide between tough choices or see the harsh life of this society.

Length and Replayability
It took me 7.5h to finish the game for the first time. However, since I didn't finish all side quests at that time, another playthrough is needed to read all dialogues. The introduction of three playable characters that offer different intro, another scene, and a slight difference in dialogues also gives a good excuse to replay the game. The game doesn't allow you to skip dialogues though so you either have to spam your mouse's left-click button or use an auto-clicker to skip the repetitive dialogues.

Conclusion

It was an enjoyable visual novel with good-looking visuals. Conversations are easy to understand despite the use of exquisite words in some dialogues. The addition of SFXs in some scenes also helps me to focus on the story and the story never disappoints - I hardly ever get bored reading them. However, it's more focused on side quests and world-building rather than the main story, leaving the main story to be bland. Luckily, the ending plays well to outweigh the con.

I'm really conflicted by this one. On one hand I'm hooked on the idea of further exploring the World of Darkness universe, and most of the characters and interactions presented are really absorbing and interesting.

But the ending completely invalidates all of your efforts for the sake of having a big twist. I guess it's thematically appropriate that a story in this world might be expected to have a darker ending, but I can't help but walk away from the experience feeling like I've been shit on.

It's an especially big betrayal to me because I was really enjoying the ride and seeing where it would go until it very abruptly ends. And it ends badly. You may think that it's shallow to ultimately give the gave a poor review because of this, but at the end of the day I would say that if the setting intrigues you like it does me to get this only when it's on sale and play it with tempered expectations.

Written in the second person this game assumes that you're entirely stupid. It kept telling me I had emotions that didn't make sense - for the character, let alone me - and the occasional options on how to respond to specific conversation cues or circumstances tended to have three options: An inane one, a stupid one and one that was the 'correct' one to pick but would only be chosen by a stupid person.

Frankly the character being depicted deserved the painful death my choices gave him; he was clearly too stupid to live. Game uninstalled, the writing is teenage emo grade idiocy.

I am mitigated here, but I still recommend...
I'm really not a fan of these kind of games where you read 95% of the time and you make choices during the remaining 5%...
The story is pretty good (45mn into the game) but it's just too boring for me, I cannot go back to this game...

The beginning was promising. It started as a well-written V:tM story, with the main character Embraced against their will and forcibly induced into Camarilla, similar to the protagonist of Bloodlines. It even makes more sense here, because instead of working for the asshole Prince, you work for the person that persuaded her to spare you. You are asked to build our own coterie while running errands for Sophie Langley and this part is actually where the game is the strongest - all four potential candidates are interesting.

However, nothing we do actually matters. After an arbitrary time limit, the game just wraps up by itself. Your coterie shows up in the ending exactly once and they aren't even necessary there. You aren't necessary in the ending too, because it's resolved by more powerful NPCs talking and fighting while you stand there like a statue. It ends with some guy, whom you had spoken to maybe once or twice, giving you a villain monologue how it was his plan all along and Blood-Bonding you.

Positives:
- I really liked the atmosphere.
- I enjoyed the music/soundscape.
- It reminds me, in so many ways, of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (which is not surprising give they're both born from the same material), yet at the same time it’s its own thing.
- I enjoyed the character I played.
- I enjoyed the characters I encountered and the different webs you create with them and the alliances it creates.

Negatives:
- It made me want to re-play VtM: Bloodlines again.
- It made me want VtM: Bloodlines 2 NOW.
- It made want to partake in a tabletop game of VtM.
- I really wish this existed for Werewolves too…
- I wish it was longer or had more episodes or something.

So as an hardcore VTM fan, I can honestly say this is a visual novel with you having no meaningful choices to make. Side quests, especially those of the coterie members are really interesting and get's you going but in the end even that doesn't matter.

Nice story but lack of alternate endings and really short. Stories were interesting, this kind of storyline but with proper choices and proper VTM engine with proper fights (although narrative in SR4 style combat), would be a great hit. Need more of the story and more of this with more meaningful choices.

A Visual Novel that doesn't require any familiarity with Vampire: the Masquerade to be enjoyed yet I would still say Coteries of New York is helped if you have some. Particularly with the latest edition of the tabletop roleplaying game that updated the setting used here. Is THIS game worth playing, however?

Having only three playable clans; Brujah, Ventrue and Toreador, is an odd choice, but one obviously aimed at representing core values of the vampire “government” that is the Camarilla. Seeing your character was on the receiving end of a rogue Embrace it's not long before your life is spared by Prince of New York and giving lease on unlife under Sophie Langley as she ends up vouching for you. If any of this is confusing don't worry because game has a neat glossary you can reference. One glance at the genre should pretty much tell you everything you need to know and what could set this one apart is actually kept rather vague from the player. Only “stat” to really keep track of is your Hunger as the only indicator you have is how much strawberry gem is smeared over your screen. Speaking of stats – I can't shake the feeling an actual stat screen could've immensely helped here to fight the arbitrary nature of what your character can do at points. Adding a sort-of timed nightly nature means you'll have to forego bits of content for replays, awkward narrative that should have perhaps given you more to do past errand duties and a single railroaded ending make this a short ride even with rather solid writing.

Other than gorgeous production values for the genre you can't help but marvel at, even if you're looking more at the dialog screen than animated backgrounds themselves, in case you ARE familiar with the source material there's quite a few references and callbacks here. Particularly with canonical characters in such a hotly contested area like New York. Primary issue running through Coteries of New York is just how cut short it plays. Both in how it strings main events and in the ending itself which throws everything to the wind for a sudden cop-out not even companions you worked for can save.

I love the Vampire: The Masquerade setting. Played the table top game back in the day. Played the computer RPGs.

This was entertaining as well.

Problem is, is that its a visual novel.

Not a bad thing in itself, but it is a short one. A few hours and you are done.

For $20.

If it was $5 it would be worth it. Choices don't appear to have much value except to modify some side characters.

So if its on a 75% off sale, jump on it for a few hours of reliving a great setting with a compelling story, but you will feel cheated if you pay any more.

This game is a good start for a series of visual novel set in the World of Darkness. It does really create a nice atmosphere and brings in a bunch of memorable characters, some which come straight from the rpg books. For someone who loves playing the tabletop game this was a pleasant surprise.
As a visual novel it works well to just sit back and relax and spend a few hours on.
My only complaints is that no matter choosing your clan there is basically little variation in the main story. And seeing the original price point I find it a bit hard to completely justify that.
The story itself is short and to the point. So having a bit more variety between the three clan choices would be nice, now it is only two scenes of personal history that differ.

Overall I enjoyed the game.

Although it is one of the shorter visual novels out there, even if you try out all the available dialogue options and routes which are unfortunately quite linear, the beautiful artwork and soundtrack help make the journey worth taking. It is also a nice little distraction if you have a burning addiction to world of darkness content.

The reason this is a no for me is two-fold: first, the options you have to proceed aren't as clear as they ought to be, and second, there is no backup save option. And the second issue compounds the first. For example, there was an option to 'outrun' a threat, which could either be interpreted as running away, or running to fight - completely opposite choices, with no way to tell which one you're actually making. And, if you pick a choice that does something different from what you expected, the save system means you're stuck with it. I understand the design decision of only allowing one automatically updating save, but I don't think the choices are implemented well enough for the design choice to be acceptable.

It's a shame, because I was really enjoying where the story was going, and the world of the game was interesting, but I can't see myself going back and finishing it when hours of playthrough can be upset by misinterpreting one choice, and having no way to fix it.

The more I think about this game, the more I feel insulted. This review will contain some minor spoilers, if you can consider this a story that can be spoiled...

DrawDistance has created here a very half-arsed attempt at story telling and game design.
I'm not sure if they thought they were being clever or subversive but what we got here is a 'game' which seems like it was shipped unfinished - they either ran out of time, budget, enthusiasm, ideas or all of the above.

Okay, time for a little positivity don't you think?

The art in this game is pretty good, I can dig it.
The soundscapes and music are fitting and well produced, not that I can remember anything that stood out.
While it was delayed on release - Coteries of New York is available for Linux (and Mac), which I'm grateful for, and was one of two reasons I bought this game. It runs really well without any problems and seems a solid linux build.
(But then again there isn't a lot going on here it's all text and slightly moving backgrounds.)
Now.. I think that's it for the positive...

Lets get ragging on it again!

Coteries of New York is a roughly 6 hour text adventure with a choose-your-own illusion.
Remember when I said before there were two reasons I bought this? (You should it was only in the last paragraph) The second reason was that this is a story set in the cult classic world of Vampire: The Masquerade. Fans of other products of the universe will know that the bar is set pretty high here - I was hoping for something a little special.

Well... in this game you can choose three clans, coincidentally all three are the most normal, close to human and easily interchangeable vampire types in the series. Anything more intriguing would require large re-writes and diversions of the 'story'.
The reason is clear, there are no branching paths, no alternate endings to this, merely slightly different flavours with the same end result.
The writing prior to the end of the game is totally passable. It's not going to win any awards, just a bit ham-handed, but it's fine. One of the things that I found very jarring though was the extremely contemporary nature of some of the writing, with direct references to YouTube, Fugazi and other on-the-nose comparisons to real world stuff.
It get's really bad when the end of the game comes (as abruptly as it does) it reveals its colours as a cliched and lazily written gotcha,

I wasn't upset that this game was entirely reading, I wasn't upset that the choices were very limited, I wasn't upset that I couldn't play Malkavian and my options were all boring and 'not me', I wasn't upset that this game pulls the forced diversity and female representation card forcibly hard and even references racism in the most awkward way during dialogue.
I WAS upset when after so many in-game days playing the game, all of my in-progress friend stories were cut short because SURPRISE FUCKER! ENDING!
See, in this game you're instructed to go and make some friends and are given 6 or so contacts. What the game never explains is that you've got limited time to pick just two so the game can try and make the end more impactful and... unique. SUBVERSION FUCKER. SURPRISED YET? WOAH DUDE.

At the end of this game not only is everything left as an untidy loose end, you can't even choose your fate.
The end doesn't even fit well into the vampire universe, not really.
What's more is that the best written, most interesting character in the game, the sheriff, who has hints about his past dripped in all over, just stops being part of the story about half way in.

If you can't tell I'm pretty salty about my purchase and this was pretty incoherent. Just like Coteries of New York I'll end this review un

There are moments where this game shines. Some of the characterization becomes deep and interesting in moments, but almost non of it pays off in any meaningful way at all. Crucially, and this is the one unforgivable sin for any visual novel, all of your choices railroad you into the same ending! There is no reward for your consideration or creativity. The game feels unfinished. You're introduced to a number of intriguing characters and topics, yet almost none of them are revisited in any meaningful way.

Let me start off by saying that I read a lot of the other reviews before deciding on my own judgement.

It took me 7 hours to finish this game - or should I rather say visual novel. I found some of the events portrayed in this game to be not well thought-through, as if lacking depth and being over-simplified for what it could've been, but that didn't stop me from mostly enjoying the stories the game has to offer. A downside I wish I would've known of is the fact that not all sidequests can be completed in one gameplay, though I suppose that gives reason to play the game again.

Do I wish it was longer? Yes. Do I think that though I didn't see the ending coming, it could've also been more tied-together with the actual storyline and more thought-through? Also yes. Do I think the game is overpriced and should only be bought when it's at a lower price? Yes. But would I still recommend it? I would, if you've got a few hours to kill and want to relax and emerge yourself in the VtM universe.

It was difficult for me to choose whether to recommend this game or not.

Ultimately, I chose not. I got it as part of a bundle and if you did as well (or very cheap/free) then I most definitely recommend playing it. But is it worth the asking price? No.

The art is decent, the world building is great even if you're unfamiliar with WoD stuff. The writing is just okay but the ideas and subplots presented in it are much more clever than the use of language would have you believe.

However, it's obscenely short and the main story arc is trash, frankly. The side quests are all really great, but the main plot is not only extremely meh but also relies on the supremely lame trope of the mastermind who planned everything to happen exactly as it did all along - even pure happenstance and coincidence. The ending happens abruptly, coming out of nowhere, breaking any and all immersion as well as bringing the game and the plot to an unsatisfying conclusion with dozens of loose ends.

Once I finished it I thought it was just an episodic game and checked out the other game in the line - Shadows of New York - but it turns out it isn't a continuation but a stand alone game.

Knowing that, the ending is so sudden and pointless that feels like the devs just got tired of working on the game and pulled the ending out of their rears so they could start the revenue stream. And to make it insulting, it's presented in such a way as to try to convince you the writers were just being clever.

If you can get it for very cheap and are prepared for the disappointment - sure. Go for it. Otherwise, don't bother.

The game only has 2 possible endings, a death in the first 15 minutes which the game does everything possible to keep you from going through with. The other ending is a complete disappointment and is insanely rushed. I thought maybe I had done something wrong, but nope, not a single choice matters (other than the extremely telegraphed death) No real reason to play this multiple times other than the achievements. There's not even a difference in which of the 3 pre-generated characters you pick at the beginning of the game.

A short, rather formulaic and fairly linear visual novel that normally wouldn't hold my attention for longer than it takes to click next in my Discovery queue, if not for its extremely potent trump card. It is set in the World of Darkness. In V5 New York to be precise. The setting is well established and detailed with a huge backstory, so being given the opportunity to play a small role in this world again was all the incentive I needed to give this a shot.

You get to pick from three characters. A Brujah, a Ventrue and a Toreador. Those characters are set, they have a specific appearance and backstory that you can't alter. The game starts very similar to the original Bloodlines. You are turned into a Vampire without permission from the local Prince. So you are captured and brought in front of a Vampire court to be tried and executed. Luckily for you a local power with an unknown agenda decides to intervene, rescue you and throw you into a cloak and dagger game you are far from ready to play.

From then on the game becomes slightly more open. You have a Haven you can rest in during the day and every night you are provided with a pool of available events, up to two of which you can play. As mentioned the game is very short, it lasts only a couple of such nights, so you won't be able to do all events in one go. Forcing you to pick. That said those events, like the main plot, are extremely linear. In fact you can't really derail anything or die at this point. At least I wasn't able to despite trying. You can simply go through the motions.

Admittedly this absolute lack of impact was rather disappointing. I don't play many visual novels but I'm under the impression they usually allow greater agency than this. Or at least provide you with multiple endings. This one doesn't do either. That said it still succeeds at immersing you in the role of an out-of-their-depth fledgling trying to come to terms with their new reality. I'm unsure if this was the result of competent writing or simply the power of the setting. But I suppose it doesn't really matter.

This game won't blow anyone's mind but for fans of Vampire the Masquerade and the World of Darkness, it can be a fun distraction. We certainly need one with Bloodlines 2 getting constantly postponed. It's not really that expensive either, so yeah, recommended. If you are not a fan though and simply want a great visual novel to play, it's probably better to keep on looking.

Mildly thumbs up. It's a decent read but it can barely be classified as a game. There's little choice and most of time the choice does not matter at all. The game ends abruptly, it seems like the developers just gave up at some point.

I'm surprised at how much enthralled I got in the story. It's really an...experience. The ending came a bit suddenly after all that buildup, but it's okay. Some side quests felt rushed, but even then there's a lot of reading and atmosphere. There are three characters to play with their own backgrounds, introductions and some side quests. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the World of Darkness.

This is not what i expected. I thought i could walk around with a avatar in a city but this is something els. It is more like a interactive comic book with some animated pictures.

If i knew that before hand, i woudn't have put this on my with list. Most probably i thought that because there was an other game with a similar name that was more to my liking. It is not bad, just not really my thing.

Despite great atmosphere and an art style that's on-point, the game fails to charm me due to a combination of 2 factors.

1. You rarely if ever feel as if you have any agency. This is usually an illusion in this sort of games, but it's far too obvious in this game

2. Lacking and lackluster

The game felt too brief. The ending felt entirely detached from the rest of the story.
A character the player has had met about twice with literally one interaction who left very little of an impression is the impetus for a twist ending and a cliff hanger as that character offers the player a blood bond..... Instead of leaving the player in suspense, it comes so much out of nowhere that it fails to keep any suspense.
Besides the fact of it being a timed game, I enjoyed the artwork, music and atmosphere of the game immensely and the story is tight. Just don't try to complete every questline in your first playthrough. It's meant to be played multiple times over.

1. It feels like part 1 though there is no saved game in the end.
Your choices which are make or fail to make a friend, retrieve research, deal with beast, save R, save S don't have anything to do with the game.
2. There are a couple of dozen static pictures with effets and some sounds, I don't know what they are selling as art and soundtrack but I am sure it isn't worth it
3. It shouldn't cost more than 7 euros compared to all the other games out there
4. In some descriptions I thought that the writers don't get the genre
5. One save only when you want to stop playing. iI you are curious about another choice you need another playthrough and this is LOTS of clicking. This will make you hate the game because choices don't matter mostly and when they do they won't impact the game.

day 1 becoming a vampire
day 2-3 some things happen
day 4 you are told to make friends with 4 Vampires, each one of them needs 4 days-meetings for their quests
day 5 sidequest appears. 3 more people and each one of them needs 3 meetings
day 6 your Patron gives you a quest
day 17 game ends, it is an 8 hours game
Choices don't seem to matter most of the times and sometimes they are there to give you the illusion it is not a long long narrative. Secret achievements are a joke like you died early you unlocked a secret achievement.

Now why I bought the game. I was to role play in a group that played masquerade in the nineties but it didn't happen for a reason. I was playing Ravenloft back then but never a game that is theatrical and you are playing the monsters. I haven't bought any Whitewolf books and I wanted an intoduction to the universe. I tried the Redemption game in the past but didn't like it much and preferred a game with no battles. I should have waited for bloodlines 2. I wasn't impressed by the whole story, and actually when Hope said the story about cryptocurrency and how much bullshit all of it is, I couldn't help but think how much bullshit all their story is and the way they are making money.
If you pick the Toreador clan the dialogs make you feel like the game is nothing more than a student's art project.
And what's with the smoking? They are supposed to be vampires with heightened senses, not gangsters in the filthy 20's.

One of those cases i wish there was a neutral button. I enjoyed the game a lot however there are a few major flaws. The biggest one is probably the game length. It took me about 2 hours to complete one run.
Thats so short it makes the order feel long. The second issue is the railroading. There is really one path and its just from start to finish everything in between is just there to mask it. The last thing is the voice acting there isn any. That certainly takes away from the atmosphere imo and I just don't think its worth the full 20 bucks. I did however enjoy it but it is so very short.
Its a little snack for vtm fans but this game will really just make you go play redemption and bloodlines for the 50th time.

Too much expensive for such a short game! Multiple choices are not interfering on how the game ends. At least if you play it through once, without reading comments and forums, you might have a fun for a very short time... but after you realize the mechanics of your choices.. you feel you were cheated... Disappointed!

As an old fan of the tabletop and the original Bloodlines title by Troika, I was happy to see a new narrative Vampire title. And to be fair, its hook was well done. It introduced interesting characters, setup tension and interplay, and had me all ready to invest time learning what the authors had in store.

And then... It just ended.

So, here's the thing boys and girls who are thinking about authoring in this format or any other. There are certain rules to storytelling. You give an interesting hook, a solid middle and a satisfying climax. That's the contract. I give you my money and my time. You give me an enjoyable story in those three parts. This game had a good hook, a fraction of a middle and then simply closed. I understand developers, you maybe had to ship. Money had run out, whatever. The fact remains, you have failed in your obligation, and that's not something the market is likely to forget or forgive.

That alone is why I'm panning this game and not recommending. Tone, spot on. Handling of VtM lore, well done. Interesting characterizations? Definitely. However, one act does not a solid story make. I could have gotten more meat (or blood in this case) out of any paperback for half the price. So potential buyer, consider yourself warned. Wait till this is in the most bargin of bargin bins. If you're a VtM fan, you will love its promise, but you will be VERY angry when it doesn't deliver.

Got excited to buy this after playing VTM Bloodlines. I bought this with understanding that this is a Visual Novel and I have played plenty of VNs. I have to agree with what others negative reviews have pointed out. This game lacks consequences. I don't even see the point of having different kindreds teaming out with me. Then there is the ending...rly? I found myself highly disappointed. Aside from VNs, I bought a lot of text based choice games and found many of them have far more consequences than this game. Luckily I bought this on discounted price or I would have regret it even more!

I hope this is not going to be some indicators of the new VTM Bloodlines 2 game coming out soon. Because I'm rly rethinking of buying one.

A lot of people have commented on the ups and downs of this game. I'll refrain from going over them- most other reviews have it spot on, in different ways- and simply say this:

You like VTM? This is worth playing. Doesn't have a whole lot of replay value (maybe a second playthrough up till the endgame for missed quests), but it knocks it out of the park when it comes to atmosphere, tone and characterization.

Get it on sale if possible; I spent a full 20 bucks on it and, though I enjoyed myself, I'm not quite sure it's worth THAT much, it's just too short. Maybe 10-20% off. Here's hoping they make a proper sequel with some community feedback.

This is a good visual novel but a poor VTM roleplaying game. It has the illusion of choice but there are no choices that seem to make any difference. As I was trying to complete the quests for all the members of my coterie I ended up finishing none. The ending comes very quickly and seems rushed. Were parts cut out ?

Shame, as I quite enjoyed the writing. The characters were fascinating but everything felt rushed. Not really selling me on another playthrough, let alone getting the sequel.

TLDR: Wait for a big sale, even if you frequent visual novels on a regular basis.

If you're a fan of VtM, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. This game is intended for people not familiar with VtM. As such, it adds nothing new to the lore or indicates anything to Bloodlines 2.

I like the art style and the character designs of the characters.
The music is decent. It's fitting but not memorable.
For its price, I expected more scenes and voice acting.

The pay off of making allies is nonexistent. Building a coterie doesn't do anything besides adding two of the coterie members intervening in the last few moments in the game.

I found myself more invested in the side stories than the main plot.

Ending was abrupt and unsatisfying.

I like the Vampire games, but just understand what you are buying as this is not a typical Vampire: The Masquerade game. This is basically a choose your own adventure book. Get ready for A LOT of reading. You read the story, make a choice, and then read more story. There is no voice acting or action sequences. If you like Vampire: The Masquerade and don't mind reading, then you'll like the game.

I played it all the way through with each vampire clan that’s available in 15 hours. There’s some spelling mistakes, which makes me think the game was rushed. The coteries aspect is worthless as even if you successfully recruit 4 only 2 will show up at the end as part of the story. Besides early death there is only 1 ending and none of your choices in the game actually matter or have influence on the game as a whole. I’m a fan of Bloodlines and Redemption, but this is not worth the money they are asking. $5 at best. Not $19.99. Huge disappointment.

Horribly short to the point where you can replay all possible side stories and all three characters in an afternoon. No real replay value as there is only one ending. Your choice of companions makes no difference in anything as they play no real part in the story aside from padding the gameplay for length. If I could go back in time, I would wait until this is on sale in the $5 and under list.

It's a visual novel, it's vampire the masquerade. If you like both you will probably like it. If you dislike either you probably won't like it.

Classic story of an embrace and introduction to kindred politics. Ends with a bit of a fizzle.

Decisions mostly affect which scenes and side-quests you experience but don't have a lot of impact on plot or outcome.

I thought the story was interesting, and I enjoyed my Ventrue character. I've never played Ventrue in Bloodlines, always Brujah or Malk, so it was a nice change of pace.

Short and incoherent.
Most of the game seems to be a primer on the VtM setting.
The main storyline is a disjointed mess of events with no link from one event to the next.
The characters are sort of interesting but everything is bogged down in this weird soup of over explanations of setting.
Just bad,

This is an excellently written, story-driven game in the V:TM universe. The big problem is that it ends when it should actually start. It is basically a long demo and would need one or two more hours of content at least to be actually considered a full game. If it is on sale and you love V:TM, get it, but otherwise wait for Bloodlines 2.

A little disappointed. Nothing really matters no matter what you do and you are forced into only one path. This game is great if you have no idea what VTM is so I think it's great for a beginner looking to get into the lore but otherwise, I felt bored that I had to sit through the same conversations with no difference of who my character was. I did like the explorations into further lore and it helped me grasp how 5e runs roleplay wise, but yeah :/ I wish the side quests were the entire story. I hate that you have to be a fucking bootlicker no matter what. You die unless you lick them boots the entire time and that's p lame. I guess we'll see how VtMB2 goes. I do think it's a little more expensive than what it's worth sadly.

The game is really interesting and you do feel that VTM vibe through the game. I'm just gonna say my points, good and bad.
- Wait for a discount
- Your choices don't have an impact because there is really only one ending
- Not a long game at all (I beat it in 6hrs)
- Can't flesh out the interesting side-characters because the game feels like it rushes you into the main quest
- Some plots will never be finished at all ( Don't want to spoil)
- The entire story leading up to the ending is actually good

Overall, the game's story is actually interesting (Besides the ending), the side-characters and even the main ones are really fun to explore and learn more about, and this game really gives you an informative dip into the VTM world. It's worth a buy just wait for a cheaper price, won't recommend it full price

Your choices do not matter, the ending is the same regardless of how you proceed, and the main antagonist is a minor character you only ever see twice before the finale. Honestly, this game just feels like a cash grab sporting the Vampire: The Masquerade title, knowing those of us who are eagerly waiting for Bloodlines 2 would buy this just to tide us over while we wait. Don't buy it, save your money for a better game.

This game gives an excellent representation of the World of Darkness and Vampire the Masquerade. It's short, sweet, and simple way to pass the time while waiting for other games in the universe. Don't expect freedom, and don't expect forgiveness, this is a brutal representation of the world of the Kindred, after your Embrace, you aren't hand held, and you can die quickly if you don't say exactly the right thing to the right person.

This is a game more reminiscent of a choose your own adventure, and honestly it is way too short. Just when you feel that you are starting to get into the game, it ends. The ending felt very abrupt to me as well. I finished it in 4 hours, and was not rushing at all. Hell, I didn't see the ending happening, and was shocked when the credits started to roll.

It's not a bad game, but not worth the 4 hours for the price. Not sure if they have any intention to add to it, but if they doubled the size of the game, or gave more clues that the ending was coming, then maybe I would recommend it. But in it's current state, it needs to be under 10 to buy.

The game has a lot of pros and cons. A lot of the cons are disappointments I have with nearly every visual novel game, so it was still worth recommending despite them.

Pros:
*Beautiful Art
*Diverse and inclusive character design
*There are choices in which side stories to do. Depending on how you interact with side NPCs, it changes who helps you in the end.
*Immersive music
*UI is easy to control/understand
*Nice edition to VtM world.

Cons:
*Other than choosing who your allies are and having a choice in what side stories are completed, ultimately, your decisions mean squat. You come out to the same ending no matter what. Sadly, although this is disappointing, not many VN games really do any better...
*I specifically tried to be nice. 1st NPC response would play. I specifically was a pain in the ass. 1st NPC response would play...Again, you'd think there would be more divergence in how NPCs respond to you. But alas...nope. You pretty much end up at the same place with the key NPCs. For the side characters you DO have a chance to change their decisions, as stated above, but that again doesn't really change how the game plays out. Which in a good narrative, it SHOULD.
*There was some lack of care with side narration. As before, I would react in different ways with each play through, with each character, and the narration would either miraculously be the same despite the events of the night before being very different, or the player character's inner dialogues were all exactly the same. Not exactly immersive.
*They left several big threads hanging. I kept thinking, maybe there is some way, some dialogue I can choose, to see that character again? Nope...(Examples: Juno and the other faction! Let's continue that arc! Nope... Had to beat down a spy to get his master's name and with great success, I get it! But that goes no where...etc...etc..)

Over all: The game was still fun. I am big fan of VtM and always welcome more content. And I am sure that a game with the art and sound design as beautiful as it was, took a lot of hard work and I commend them. But the narration and story could have been soooo much better. Play it for the simple story and the beautiful vamps, but don't expect a deep, immersive story.

This game had a lot going for it, but in reality it is really just way too short. It definitely has some good stories and was fun to play, just to short to really enjoy it. As what others have said it has a great feel to the Vampire: The Masquerade table top, but right at the time you are getting settled in playing the game it rushes to an end, which is a big let down. Personally I would like for it to be very long, expanded stories, more characters to meet and work with, deeper involvement (getting your own haven, cash flow, ghouls, feeding, etc..) , and maybe add some more clans available to use. In its current state, I do not agree with the cost, maybe around 5 dollars at most, since once it ends you feel like you just did only a tutorial or a prologue, not a full game. Maybe they will improve and expand the length and add more content...
