Absolut empfehlenswert. Hoher Wiederspielwert.
Waffen freispielen, Lieblingskombi finden, Waffen aufwerten. Bosse legen.

i liked the game, but its wasted potential in my eyes, it gets way too hard in the second area, making it pretty much a walking simulator through the first level, which is always the same, same mobs, same music, it gets really boring, really quickly

i honestly dont know one should fight against 3 high level mobs at once, 1 vs 1 is challanging and fun but 3 vs 1 is chaos and insta death, if there would be more rewards for playing, more variation in atmosphare and music(!!), and a better difficulty management, i'd recommend the game

i imagine random chests in the stages and a way to 1 vs 1 enemys better would make a huge improvement

hope this helped someone, first two hours were cool, but not worth the cost of something like boneworks

A solid rogue-like VR title with great combat, but not for the faint of heart.

It can get very difficult even on lower difficulties and the pacing is quite fast which in turn really makes the combat shine. The art-style is fantastic and very immersive. The only heads up I'd like to give is that it can get very intense physically which can be a turn off for some, but if you're looking for great exercise along the lines of Beat Saber this will be right up your alley

I highly recommend this for any VR library.

This game is the closest I've seen to games like Hades and The Binding of Isaac in VR. It is really well made and the combat is very fun.

One thing to note - you need a LOT of space to play this game. I played it in an almost empty room with Oculus AirLink and still hit the wall multiple times.

The most fun I've had playing an action VR game. The controls are fantastic, the aesthetic is amazing, and you feel so cool when you're just cutting a swathe through enemies. The weapons all feel really different, especially down to the weight of them. I love playing arcanist blade and mace, and because the mace is a weightier weapon, its a little slower to block with. It makes every movement and decision you make feel important.

Also a gigantic thumbs up for the vignetting, so many vr games give me motion sickness with the movement; never once have I felt motion sickness playing this game.

If I have to say anything negative, its really just that you want to make sure you have a rig with good tracking and a computer that can handle the game well. It feels really bad when you move to block and your rig doesn't track correctly or the game stutters from too many enemies moving and effects on the screen. I don't fault the game for it though.

TL;DR: Very unique VR Roguelite game with a great amount of weapon variety and some genuinely challenging enemies. The game has a great artstyle and it looks good with the headset on. 8/10.

----

Until You Fall doesn't do anything particularly unique for a Roguelite. You have your run-specific pickups, which empower you to go through the stages and collect the resources you need to upgrade your weapons permanently. There's a lot of ways you can build your character, especially when it comes down to the choice of weapons. There's a surprising amount of variety here and you can pull off some really interesting and particularly satisfying combos.

The enemy design is cool! I love the look of the mobs that you have to face in your runs. They mesh really well with the environments of the game.

It's a good game, would recommend it. The gameplay is decently simple at its core and it's definitely something that you can have the family enjoy when you bring over the headset for them to try :D

Ignore my play time here, I have played a lot more on Oculus.
This is basically Infinity Blade in VR and it's absolutely awesome. It's like starring in your own badass 80's Saturday morning cartoon with a slapping synthwave soundtrack.
It's definitely demanding from a physical point of view, I probably get more worked up playing this than I do Beat Saber. The progression is roguelike with the ability to unlock permanent upgrades between runs. Initially the variety of weapons may not seem to differ too much but once you start augmenting them and using their specials different loadouts can lead to very different type of play style.
Overall I'd put this as one of the best VR games out there, it's polished with a ton of content, great soundtrack and super satisfying gameplay.

VR Roguelite with multiple weapons and flashy combos? Sounds like a dream come true. And indeed, at first this is a pretty fun game, it's satisfying to hit the combos and block a flurry of blows.

But once you've gotten a bit further into the game the encounter design becomes absolutely abusive. The game has no problem whatsoever throwing 3-5 or even more high-level enemies at you at once, and because of how the game and VR work, it's basically impossible to block more than one enemy attacking you simultaneously, which means you have to position yourself to avoid being surrounded. It's not like Gorn where you can just flail around and get enemies off you, if an enemy is next to you and not about to be stunned, he's going to hit you. But the movement is glacially slow (slower than the slowest enemies) unless you use your teleport dash, which has limited uses that recharge over time. This recipe results in the later levels being 10% combat and 90% positioning, trying to finagle the enemy pathing such that you're only fighting one strong enemy at once. It's like herding cats.

Even this wouldn't be so bad if the movement worked well, but there's this incredibly frustrating behavior where your facing doesn't actually update to the thumbstick orientation until you let go of the movement. So if you're walking forward and turn 90 degrees with the thumbstick turn, forward on the thumbstick is no longer forward for you. It's a minor complaint until you're in the middle of one of the scenarios described above and suddenly you teleport directly into the enemies instead of away from them.

If the buggy movement got fixed, it would at least make the game playable. But I'm still not convinced that it will be *fun* without a redesign of how the difficulty scales. Blocking a bunch of fast blows is fun, dodging big attacks is fun... dying because you're surrounded and can't physically block both in in front of and behind you simultaneously is not fun.

Ok yeah, this might be even better than Beat Saber. As someone with a shitty lower back, this game gives me a lot of post-workout muscle soreness in a good way. It's also incredibly fun, deep and engaging with a solid roguelike progression system, interesting weapon abilities and a bunch of strategy in regards to loadout and upgrade choices.

As of 9/18/2021 you can get this game as part of the current Humble Bundle.

I'm still pretty new to VR but I can already tell this game stands out. The audio and visuals have a much higher finish than the usual VR Play-Doh and combat is more involved than just flailing your arms around. At first I was overwhelmed trying to defend myself but the game only got more and more gratifying as I improved — soon enough I was winning duels with big bad knights and blocking one enemy with my left while hacking away at another with my right. I haven't savored victories like this since Dark Souls.

I'm also a big fan of flat roguelikes. UYF has a ton of replay but not in the conventional roguelike sense with procedural generation leading to chaotic and unexpected situations — enemies and environments are mostly the same each run. Replay instead comes from your load-out and build. Each weapon combination has its own advantages and disadvantages that make you approach a fight differently — i.e. swords and daggers are responsive and great for blocking and doing fast combos, whereas maces and axes are slow to maneuver and dangerous to block with but do high damage when they land. These nuances let you significantly alter your playstyle before the rogue-like elements within a run even begin to kick in, allowing you to mix things up if a strategy isn't working for you.

Unlike a flat roguelike however, you're unlikely to burn an hour or more in UYF unless you've got the stamina of an Olympic athlete. But if you enjoy this game as much as I did you'll be telling your body to quit whining because it's time for another run.

Amazing & Mesmerizing Experience

I cannot express enough how satisfying and entertaining this game has been to me. Graphics are beautiful and the mechanics of the game are super easy to learn. I'm absolutely hooked. I spend most of my time in VR between this game and Pavlov. Absolute jewel of an asset to have.

In fact I like it so much that I purchased it twice to show appreciation for the developers. Keep up the great work.

Phenomenal sword fighting game. Everything about it is pretty enjoyable and while challenging, it feels fair.

The varying weapons each have their own weight (which affects how quickly it responds to your controllers moving) and unique identity in what they allow you to do. These can be further augmented during runs depending on what upgrades you choose. This includes:
-Upgrading your combo limit (damage you deal after breaking through guard)
-Generic damage on each weapon (usual at the cost of an HP sacrifice)
-% modifiers to weapon damage sometimes with conditions attached (you have to socket into your weapon, Sockets are limited unless increased)
-HP upgrades + restores
-Weapon ability upgrades

All of this leads to relatively unique builds that you can try during the course of the Rogue Lite.

There is a form of permanent progression through the upgrades you can purchase on your weapons to make them stronger as you progress through the game. This is usually, in the form of damage or weapon socket increases.

Oh, and it's a good workout too :)

tl;dr
7.5/10. Very immersive melee weapons gameplay but a bit repetitive - needs more locations and more enemies.

Gameplay
When you die you need to start over (roguelite). However, you keep aeather that you can use to permanently improve weapons. You have a selection of weapons you can use - one held in each hand. You are moving through small areas inside Shattered Woods forest. Each area contains few monsters that you will need to defeat. Attack monsters with a flurry of slashes to break their guard, then execute a combo that will diminish their health points. Monsters also attack and you need to block their attacks by putting weapons you are currently using in telegraphed areas on the screen and also you will need to do sidesteps or crouches to avoid certain attacks from bigger monsters and/or bosses. Then you move to the exit and select a new buff for your weapon or improve/restore a number of your health points. If you die, you will start from the beginning but you won't have to defeat bosses you already defeated (boss appears every five levels) until you change the difficulty.
The Good
  • Extremely immersive must-have VR game
  • Standing and seated mode - you don't need a large space to play it.
  • Combat with swords/axes and other melee weapons.
  • Works like charm on Oculus Quest 2 - both Air Link and Oculus Link mode. Also available natively on Quest 2 - albeit with worse graphics but you can play on-the-go ????
  • Multiply difficulties and replayability.
  • You will sweat like crazy ????

The Bad
  • Repetitive gameplay can get a bit frustrating.
  • Very similar locations and not that many different enemies.
  • You will sweat like crazy ????

7.5/10 : I really like it! Easily one of the better VR games but needs more locations and more enemies.

I FULLY recommend this game. Love it, play it daily now, if you like VR melee combat, grab this game.

That being said, I must give it a negative review still since there are some bugs and funny business that I would've hoped got smoothed out during Early Access. I understand certain levels generating either easy pushovers or near-unclearables (contextually) can be forgiven with the justification that it's just part of the Roguelite design.

However, items like audio and haptic bugs, blocks not registering, enemies that can pass through or attack through each other, and enemies with 0HP that still follow through with attack animations are not fun, especially when I'm guaranteed to get multiple of them consistently every single play session.

More controller/UI customization would be very welcome, too. I strongly dislike being unable to turn off smooth turning and accidentally hitting it in battle, especially when this feature kinda feels like standard nowadays.

It's a pretty solid VR Game, I could see some players finding it repetitive but I like to come back for one or two run every now and then trying to reach the end on challenging, getting closer..!

Great graphics, great music, great mechanics, I'd like to be able to adjust turn speed though because I find the increment too low.

By choreographing the moves and blocks you need to make (essentially 'gamifying' the combat, sort of like a rythm game), Until You Fall has somewhat paradoxically managed to create the most engaging close combat fighting system I've seen in a VR game so far, that really feels like you're engaging in skillful weapon scuffles. It also really creates a sense of weight for your weapons.

The Roguelite elements are also very well done, with a lot of weapons choice and customization. The music is absolutely perfect (even if there's not much variety to it).

Also pretty good for working up a sweat if you get really into it! A decent amount of VR space recommended though, or good control of your bodily direction ;).

Neon? Synthwave? Slashing enemies and feeling super cool ALL THE TIME? Yes please.

This is one of the best experiences in VR hands down, it's addictive, intense and makes you sweat while you're having a lot of fun!
I regret putting this aside because I kept dying - the title should've been obvious to me - however I'm so glad I picked it up again because every single day I have a blast playing it, every single detail was thought out to make you feel cool and powerful it's so immersive that you really feel a Rune Knight saving Rokar and let me tell you... Rokar is gorgeous <3

I can't recommend this enough.
Fight. Fall. Rise Again.

Very good, much better than it seemed to me. The blocking system and evading system looked preety awkward in the video, looking like a real downplay from all the other games that uses collision and physics, however I find this fun and challenging. The hardship from multiple oponents also increase the game hardness after you get used to the mecahnics. The Hardest level you play before finishing the game was really challenging enough in my opinion (likes to play souls like so hardships are important to me). took me about 12 hours to finish. (finishing the game in the final run takes about 30 minutes. there are 3 boss fights that dont respawn, and hardship increase every eight levels, in the first eight levels you have to master fighting dificult single oponents, and in the boss some mild multi tasking. in the second sections there is more variety and more combinations, and in the third it is taken to the extreme.

Until you Fall is a game for newcomers and enthusiasts alike. The gameplay is rewarding and has a pace for everyone. This is one of the few games i can let people who don't play vr often start with and not get sick, though to me the movement is way too slow and wish you could edit it so you didn't feel the need to dash everywhere.

There are a decent variety in weapons and difficulty to keep you playing for well over the value of the game without any pay walls like so many games enjoy including these days. I wouldn't be surprised to see dlc or a sequal to this game down the line considering the addictive/challenging gameplay and comfort-ability.

satisfying as hell melee combat that'll make you feel SO cool when you block flurries of attacks, physically move your body to dodge attacks, and turn your arms into sore noodles attacking.

then you're reduced to a puddle of sweat after a single 15 minute session.

Until you fall is a Roguelite swordfighting game. The basic gameplay is that you advance from room to room killing enemies and receiving powerups as you go. Enemy attacks are telegraphed and avoided by either aligning your weapons to block, or moving your head to dodge. Different weapons have different traits and special abilities, and you can mix and match any two weapons to come up with whatever combos you want to try. Each room and boss you beat awards currency which is used to unlock and upgrade your weapons, so there is progression between each run.

While the name might suggest the game continues on until you lose, there are actually a set number of rooms with a boss at the end, and it is possible to complete a run. As of the time of this review, there is no infinite mode.

While this sounds simple, the interesting part of the game lies in the complexities. The game has 4 difficulty levels, 3 of which are available at the start and the last which becomes available after completing the game. On easy difficulties enemies are mostly willing to let you fight them 1 on 1. On Nightmare, the hardest difficulty, they'll attempt to flank you, jump in to defend their friends when they are vulnerable, and back off when their guard gets low. While the game will only ever have 1 enemy attacking you at the same time so that it is always technically possible to avoid every attack, they can rapidly swap between which enemy is attacking you, making it incredibly difficult to avoid attacks if you allow yourself to be flanked.

So while the easy difficulty at first is all about learning the enemy combos so you can consistently block them, the game later becomes more about effectively engaging multiple enemies at once. Sure, you can master fighting a Knight and be able to block every attack 1 v 1, but can you fight 2 knights at the same time while a spell weaver is trying to blast you with fireballs?

This would be frustrating if the game didn't give you tools to deal with this, and thankfully it does. Each weapon has a special which can be used to damage enemies or for crowd control. And then there is movement.

The movement system in UYF is one of the best I've ever played on VR. I generally hate dashes or teleports in VR largely because they are usually clunky and require you to hit a button and then aim something with your hand and then release or similar systems. UYF's system is so much better. You have a dash indicator at all times, which is controlled by looking in the direction you want to dash. If you tap forward, you dash to the indicator. If you tap down, you backdash. Tapping left or right turns. This is simple, intuitive, and works great. Also, dashing is a major part of the game, you can deal damage to enemies by dashing into them and how much damage you deal is determined by your weapons and can be upgraded. It isn't just a tacked on feature to avoid motion sickness.

Speaking of, even though the game features a vinetteing system to help, I've never had any issues with motion sickness. The movement and dashing is so intuitive and smooth that it's never been an issue.

But how is the sword fighting? In a word: Amazing. The feedback both visually and audibly is amazing. Learning combos is incredibly satisfying. The first time you manage to block an empowered knight's combo you will feel like a sword god. And you damn well should.

If I had to say there is any downside to the game, it's probably the difficultly curve which can be a bit rough because each time you restart a run you start back at square one fighting weak enemies. When you are first learning it can take awhile to get back to the point where you are fighting things that are actually a challenge. This can be a slog when you have to spend 10 minutes every run slogging through easy enemies to get back to the parts you are dying on so you can actually learn and improve. This does get better if you push through it, but it can be off-putting at the start and a bit of a grind. My advice if you run into that is to mess with the difficultly, either increasing the difficultly to make the start harder, or reduce it to get some progression.

There is also a bit of a lack of variety in enemy types. There are basically 4 enemies which each have a normal and empowered version. I personally don't find this boring and find plenty of variety thanks to how the enemies act and the different weapons available, but this might not be enough for some people. There is also currently one one set of levels, or 'campaign' available. I feel there is enough content for the price, especially given how good that content is, but again, that's up to you personally.

All in all, UYF is a fantastic game. It's one of the best VR games I've ever played.

I originally planned to leave a very good review for the game, as it is really good - but very short and repetitive. The game was completely abandoned once it left early access - no chance to see new enemies, bosses, attack sequences from foes or new weapons. You can see a comparison between overall reviews and recent reviews.

The enemies: Small variety, and with the same attack pattern. Once you learn it, it will be really easy to parry/dodge all attacks. They could have at least done more variation or randomness in the attack pattern, instead they are hoping the difficulty comes from filling your game area with enemies. The bosses? There is just one, a really cool and well done one, but what is the point, if you only face it again and again? Only about 5-6 unique enemies, plus them again re-skinned and with extra health slapped on, and one extra attack.

The weapons: Swords, swords and more swords... I understand that it's a sword fighting game, but would have been nice to see more unique stuff, like the small amulet things that don't allow you to block, for example. There are some wolverine-style blades that I really like, as it feels great to jump around enemies and slash them out. But everything else is mainly swords. I don't understand why the team could not get creative with shields, maybe a short ranged weapon, spear, hammer?

The combat: Feels great, until you learn it like the back of your hand. Also, dashing in and out of the same enemy can be abused to easily dispose of it, at least with a number of weapons. And the power-ups are just not impactful enough to create different experiences/strategies you can go for each run. Most of the time you are offered extra health, healing, currency to level up, extra damage, extra dashes or some abilities that feel too close to each other.

The grind: Hidden behind what I can only imagine being called replay value is the insane amount of work you need to put in to level up every weapon to 10. Sure, if the game was not going to play almost exactly the same every time around, it would be an enjoyable learning experience, as you come back every time stronger. But it is not the case, as I am running through the same 20+stages again and again until I get to an actual hard battle, which I may or may not win. And I am not saying that to brag - once you play as much as I have, it will be easy and boring, even on Nightmare.

People have left cool suggestions for content in their discord but I find it hard to believe they will implement anything new, other than UI or minor QoL things. You can check their discord for yourself and draw your own conclusion, but the only thing they do to keep the game active is create weekly challenges, which are not even implemented straight into the game.

It's really a shame, because I used to love this game in Early Access and I was hoping for at least 2 more bosses. But the project was abandoned and I cannot recommend it until we actually get more content.

This belongs in every VR user's library. The basic gameplay loop is just so satisfying. You trade blows with an enemy, blocking and dodging their attacks while trying to sneak hits of your own in, until their Guard bar is depleted leaving them vulnerable to a Combo that requires slashing at specific angles. The difficulty and limited HP pool makes the encounters feel incredible to pull off. There are different weapons to suit your fighting style. Larger weapons are heavier and slower to block, while smaller weapons are lighter and faster but have shorter reach. I prefer rapid attacks with dual daggers until trying to gracefully Combo with my main hand. One upgrade build let me dash to an enemy, light it on fire, dash to the next, light it on fire, then dash away as they both burned to death. 10/10 makes me feel like a WoW rogue.

I hate this game. It's so simple, yet so difficult at the same time. Deaths really do feel like they are your fault, which makes it even worse. Loved the game untill recent update or something. Blocking became hectic. 1/5 times even when game shows that i am gonna block the atack monster makes a hit. on 1/10 monsters i cant hit critical hits no mater in what angle ( yes i know i need to hit in the way its shown, but i can slice 10 times in same direction and nothing happens ). I tried reinstalling the game it didnt help. ill change my review once this is is fixed. All in all fun game just recent bugs ruined it for me.

- Easy to learn, difficult to master
- Excercise
- Rather beautiful for a VR game

Cons:

No janky physics, no zooming around flicking your sword killing everything, no boring generic story to listen to. Just an awesome game loop with fantastic mechanics.

One of the best VR games I've played so far; really engaging combat. I've played a tank in WoW for over a decade, and this felt like WoW boss fights coming to life for me. Really fun and engaging to see your player 'level' -- and by that I mean YOU actually get better at every fight without needing the game to give you upgrades or better gear, etc (Though, upgrades on the weapons are of course nice too).

This is a very fun souls-like rogue-lite VR arena simulation.

* Souls-like: you, the player, gain experience and become better. It's a game with mastery at its core. Enemies that are end bosses at first become regular opponents to you after a few sessions.
* Rogue-lite: it has multiple short playsessions with in-session temporary upgrades and meta-progression to have permanent upgrades across sessions. Unlock new weapons and upgrades as you go.
* Arena simulation: you fight a few enemies at a time in a relatively small arena. Positioning, alternating between enemies and using them as cover is all part of the package.

You get a very nice workout from this as well, so it's a good way to shed that lockdown body and become ripped like a real arena combatant!

I've been playing this game for months in early access. The intense swordplay makes for a very good workout, keeping me coming back for just a little bit more every day. There's a nice amount of build variety, featuring a dozen weapons to choose from, one in each hand powered up by a random selection of upgrade gems that you get over the course of your run. Once you get good at the game, playing through to the final boss takes about 20-30 minutes, but even failed attempts leave you with valuable Aether to unlock/upgrade your weapons permanently between runs. Most players claim it takes about 10 hours or so before they find their first victory against the Aether Horror, as was my experience, and then keep coming back because the core mechanics, the workout, and the build variety give this game extra value!

The developers have said they plan to add more campaigns besides the current Shattered Woods, which means more maps, more enemies/bosses, and hopefully more weapons! One of the best VR games promises to get even better over time! So get in there, Champion of Rokar!

One of the first VR games I've played with really satisfying core moment-to-moment gameplay and engaging higher level design. Games like Half-life Alyx and Boneworks are certainly interesting and fun to play around with, but they're not nearly as enjoyable on a visceral, mechanical level. The fast paced roguelite design and metaprogression elements help out a lot too, giving you a tangible reason to keep playing while say Beat Saber for instance, another VR game with satisfying arcade-style gameplay, is just kind of bare in that respect.
Until You Fall isn't incredibly innovative in any one particular aspect, but it all comes together astonishingly well in this game while most others falter in some major way. Also, it's less than $30, the standard VR tech demo price if only by five dollars, and it really is more of a complete product than a lot of other VR titles.
One thing I would like to see added is an option for a faster walking speed though. I know it's in service of preventing motion sickness, but I don't really have problems with that personally and the maximum walk speed is still pretty slow for my taste. Directional (sideways) dashing would also be really nice.

What I really like about Until You Fall is that it has a really good approach to core sword-swinging. When I imagine a VR sword title, there are three approaches; lightsabers, physics swords, and the Infinity Blade approach. Until You Fall takes something very akin to the Infinity Blade approach, which I think is by far the best decision possible and I greatly appreciate it.

The core gameplay is excellent. The world is currently a little shallow, but still very enjoyable. While this game might not be the hpothetical 'perfect' VR game of its design, it certainly seems to be the best one so far; and for that, it deserves to be bought, played, and enjoyed. From an industry perspective, good design like this needs to be rewarded, and hopefully can become the new standard over the physics-simulation flail-around approach that most other VR games utilize.

Not even an hour into the game and I can already say that I am loving the game. Absolutely captivated by the introduction of mechanics outside of the tutorial. Definitely wasn't expecting a dodge mechanic to come into play and that was just so nice that I had to stop myself from attempting another run after dying. The models for the weapons and player arms look incredibly nice, the UI looks so crisp and fresh-- the developers put a lot of effort into this and it shows.

Some criticism that I do have is the common enemy design and levels. With the enemies, I wish that they were a bit more varied instead of having that same, weird black and orange humanoid figure but that could also be due to a creative/story reason. As for the levels, I wish that they weren't so small and short, I wish that you could explore the level that you're on some for some extra loot instead of having to clear the floor to get loot-- that and transitional scene to take place instead of a grey screen. There might already be a mechanic like that that gets introduced later in the game, if so then disregard that comment about exploration for loot.

Either way, I can recommend this game if you enjoy roguelikes. I actually had to stop myself from continuing to play so that I could go to sleep.

Until You Fall is the perfect combination of Roguelike and VR, and it probably has the most fun swordplay that I've seen in a VR game. The planning, choosing upgrades and weapons can be pretty deep and take some strategy, and the actual hacking and slashing rewards you for finding the perfect mix of going all out and staying defensive and strategic. Difficulty settings are also great, in my opinion. I play on relentless, and it's a real good challenge!

I highly recommend this game, its probably my favorite VR game, and it feels very up-to-date, with a lot of newer VR conventions and design choices (by the way, this game with the index controllers is amazing!)

This is by far, one of the most satisfying action games on the vr and is the first one to master and baffle me with a sturdy and fun combat system that uses sword style weapons.

I have had SO much fun over the past few days, i have had two faults in total since buying the game, but i have yet to find anything actually wrong with the game since both times were hardware/environment related. In short, this game uses a very simple combat layout and visually/audibly ramps it up to 100, giving you an incredible power fantasy based experience, i haven't had this much fun cutting down enemies since the release of gorn, it's just S O O O O GOOOOOD.

the platforming is brilliantly designed too, working in the form of a set amount of levels you have to beat in a single run, but for every chunk of progress made the game gives you things to buy and upgrade to the point where the first few levels become a breeze and give you the opportunity to warm up for the REAL challenges ahead, and on top of that, you will naturally pick up the most efficient way to block and strike by your own volition solely by the amount of times you fight the enemies in the game, Meaning that this game gives you the tools to get stronger, whilst also providing gameplay that allows you to BECOME better, and it's SO satisfying.

This game offers an incredible balance of a challenging and fun action platformer experience, and the soundtrack and visuals are BEAUTIFULLY combined with it.

solid 9.5/10, new fav VR game, fuckin love ya Schell Games

the most exhilarating VR game I've played, and It's basically Infinity Blade in VR. The limit on how well you do isn't the damage on your sword, it's your awareness, speed and stamina. The combat feels fantastic. The sound design is excellent: it's stylistic, immersive, and helps you keep track of what's going on. I hope that future VR games take notes from Until You Fall and Schell Games.

Overall, really not a bad melee based VR beat em up kind of game with simple progression. Worth playing for sure. Nothing ground breaking. As I am writing this review I found out it's early access, but it already feels like a complete and polished experience (haven't beat it yet after 4 hours).

Pros:
-Simple, fun, arcadey gameplay
-Longetivity in difficulty and weapon/stat unlocks
-Solid aesthetics. Graphics and audio are great. Voiceover is cheesy and makes it feel like an arcade game but it all works together.

Cons
-Melee combat is a little too simple/rigid. You don't attack body parts, there's no edge alignment on your weapon, and when you strip away the aesthetics you are essentially swinging a stick at a box in the direction they tell you to. I want more from a VR game with melee, but it's not all that bad because this game has other mechanics like dash attacks, ultimate abilities, and an upgrade system. There is no reason to stab enemies at all but it seems to register until the game makes you slash for combos, which makes fist weapons feel straight up stupid.
-Lack of variety in gameplay styles and enemies. All the weapons are 1 handed, and there are like 3 builds you can base your dude around; stasis, soul burn, or I guess brute force, and I only personally feel one of those is any good but it's at least fun to try different styles.
-Sometimes the tough dudes visually overwhelm you and even on casual mode you can't see the spots you are supposed to block. Your best option is to not let them start a combo which feels a little weird since some weapons are centered around blocking.
-No smooth turn and very slow walking even on max speed. Moving is janky in general but it doesn't interfere too much once in combat.

The gameplay itself is honestly an addictive experience of honing your reflex and rhythm. Call me a lazy bastard, but the game also tricks you into exercise in a matter that I'd dare claim to be more intensive than the likes of Beat Saber. If you like melee combat games for your VR headset, don't pass this one up. It seems like a criminally underrated treat that will leave you sweating yet wanting to go for another round.

This game is ONLY early access?! This game is absolutely incredible and it feels so damn good! Can't wait to see how it develops. I bought it during the sale and I would have gladly paid full price for this game. I honestly feel like I cheated the developers for buying this game for only $10. I only played for 45 minutes or so at the time of this review, but can say that this game is a damn masterpiece and plays perfectly for VR (I use an Index, and the controls felt perfect).

Combat feels good, and weapons are solid and don't feel rubbery or as if they go through objects as if they don't exist. Weapons clash with one another and with surrounding objects. If you get too close to a wall or backed up by a boss into a corner, you may hit the walls with your weapon which will prevent you from swinging, so tactical placement is something to think about. I don't know how many weapons there are, but there is an area to upgrade each weapon permanently and you can add runes to weapons as well. You can hold 2 weapons, and each weapon holds its own special ability which has a cooldown before using it. Monsters have Guard and Health, and weapons deal different Guard and Health damage. So, for instance, a sword you might level and rune in a way which does a lot of Guard damage, and then you can have an axe in your off-hand which deals more Health damage. The combos are endless, and allowing to add several runes to each weapon makes customisation amazing.

The primary fighting mechanics which I found while playing the game are parrying, attacking, combos, and dodging.

To parry an incoming attack you will see a blue lit up zone which one of you weapons need to be in that spot before the enemy attacks in that spot. Often there are several parries lined up which you have to complete mechanically so that each enemies sword swing is parried. If you don't parry an attack, then the incoming swing will hit you, and you will take some health loss. This makes the game feel like you're actually fighting in a choreographed sword fight, and the enemies animations follow through beautifully.

Attacking is simply swinging your own sword, dagger, fist weapon, or axe (from what I've seen so far) at the enemy when an opportunity comes in after parrying or dodging attacks.

Combos are moments which allow you to deal more damage to the enemy by giving you brief moments where you have to slash the enemy in a specified direction. If you miss this opportunity then you miss that potential damage.

Dodging is the mechanic which caught me off guard when I was fighting the first boss. This mechanic MAKES the game. Without this, the game would feel too simple and movement wouldn't feel as badass. During times when fighting stronger enemies, there will be a dodge indicator pop up which indicates which direction you need to physically dodge towards to dodge the enemies incoming attack. You cannot block or parry these attacks, and can only prevent the damage by moving your body in the direction indicated. While parrying, attacking, and doing combos, dodging added to this mix makes you feel incredible when you complete the movement perfectly and parry and dodge each incoming attack, and then find an opening and destroy the enemy. It's the best damn experience I've had in VR so far, and it even tops slashing through blocks in Beat Saber.

One mechanic which I believe needs some work is the power ups for each weapon. I feel like they could do some more interesting things with these, such as add a range attacks such as a fireball or lighting bolt. Casting spells in this game would seriously ramp up the badass-ness to 1,000%, and something I would LOVE to see in an upcoming update or future release. Maybe it was just me, but I felt that the power up mechanic was a bit delayed, and I wanted to see it activate instantaneously. That being said, I only played the game for 45 minutes or so, and will need to experiment more with this, but it just didn't feel like I could activate the ability fast enough when mid-combat in the middle of dodging and parrying attacks.

I also think they did the right thing by adding arms and a body to your character because it looks and feels good, but isn't totally necessary with this type of game because you aren't looking at your arms often.

If you have not purchased this game yet, do it. If you need a good game to get you moving during this time, this is the one. It has you slashing and dodging often enough. I was doing squats to dodge and didn't even notice how much my legs were hit until I finished playing and my legs felt a bit sore. For an early access game, I am super excited to see more that they bring, because so far this is awesome.

The only thing this game is missing is ITEMS! I desperately want there to be an item system as in Gungeon, Dead Cells, Isaac, etc. This would be the best roguelike on VR and one of the best in general. As of right now, In Death has waaaayyyy more items and weapons for endless replayability. However, they're still HOPEFULLY adding more content at some point. I doubt it will be a new system like items, but even more weapons would add to the replayability some. Definitely worth every penny though!

I did not think I'd be in love with this game as much as I do currently. Upon writing this review, I had just finished beating the first boss and a few levels after that with the projectiles. This game is definitely hard, and you will fall. After falling, you'll just have to rise up again.

Restarting at the beginning of the game after falling seems hard and not fair, but I find it intriguing and fairly balanced because you get to keep upgrades on your weapons and you receive Aether to purchase new traits or weapons. I did find it to be repetitive to go back through the beginning levels to get back to where I died, but it gets easier each time through because of the upgrades and your combat experience.

One change I would suggest to make repeating the levels less annoying is to add some form of positive feedback loop. A way to do this could be dropping a trait or some Aether when you die so that when you get back to where you died, you can obtain the dropped loot (this would only apply to the most recent death, of course). I'm not saying that the game is in dire need of this feature, but it's a change I would make if I wanted to alleviate restarting the game after dying.

Overall, I love this game because of the addicting combat and great use of virtual reality. I can't wait to see more from this game and I can't wait to see what this game will be like after Early Access. And yes, more enemy types and variety in gameplay would be very well appreciated.

Edit: I know it says that I only have ~3 hours of playtime, but in reality, I have a lot more. Since I have an Oculus headset, I decided to support the devs by purchasing it on the Oculus store (I have most of my playtime there). I'm excited to hear that the game is coming out of Early Access in the Fall and that the game is being ported to the Quest and PSVR for more people to experience this gem.

A good friend recommended this game. I usually don't like VR melee action due to the combat feeling as if it lacks weight/feels like you're swinging paper. I also don't like how the weapons typically interact with objects. *This game does NOT have any of that!* It is a very clever system that encourages you to hit enemies to a certain combat rhythm so to speak. It is very satisfying to play and you feel like you're actually hitting things (one of the reasons I love beat saber, but tend to not like anything else with physical strikes). This game is really unique in the VR category, and I cannot recommend trying it out from a friend's library if you're on the fence about it. I never would have bought this game, but after playing it from my friend's library, I had to support the devs on such a great concept. I truly hope this game continues past alpha and doesn't just do a grab and abandon like so many games do nowadays. This is an absolute gem of a game! Thank you for the great experience!

Ho-lee shit. This game is insane. I've played PLENTY of VR games, some good, some bad, and some amazing. This game ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY falls under the amazing category, where Half Life Alyx resides. This hack-and-slash roguelike experience is one of a kind, and the visuals and music come together with the exciting, fast paced (and INCREDIBLY fun) combat to create a wonderful cocktail of mind stimulating goodness. Also, you will sweat like a maniac. Stop reading this review, just buy the game already.

This is, without a doubt, the best game in VR. Its perfection comes from its simplicity - you attack, block, and dodge - but the way Schell Games puts it all together makes for a true masterpiece. At its core, every enemy works similarly. You try to reduce their guard meter by attacking them, and blocking, both of which deplete it. Then, you enter a combo phase where you swing in the directions indicated to whittle away their health (and bigger swings do more damage).

Those basics would be fun for a few runs of this Rogue-lite, with a typical run taking about 15-25 min. But then you have the upgrades!!! Every room cleared gives an upgrade, as varied as dealing more damage for big swings, super move buffs, even trading health for damage. Each room cleared all grants aether, which you can sometimes also choose as a room reward, in lieu of powerups. Aether comes back to your hub and lets you buy new weapons (I think I have about 8 unlocked) and upgrade those weapons (my best are currently lv 9). Each upgrade does something unique - add a slot to carry more upgrades in your run, increase base damage, or add a permanent buff like increasing your health-damage combo or dash damage.

Oh yeah, and the locomotion is a joy too! You have smooth locomotion that is painfully slow, by design, so you can't really run away from enemies (and if you're nausea-sensitive, its slow enough that you'll probably be ok). But then you have teleport-dashes (3 by default) which deal damage when you approach an enemy with them, but they take a few seconds to recharge. So you can dash into an enemy, dash back before they counter, dash back in, and you have taken up a huge part of their guard meter before you actually fight them. Other times, you want to save the dashes for when enemies swarm you, because fighting multiple at once is not easy - but also not impossible. It seems Schell Games has put in a system where enemies attack one- or two-at-a-time, so if you're really paying attention you can block one while doing your combo on another...

What I'm trying to say is, this game is very simple to pick up and play - or give to a friend to try - but the level of interesting complexity it creates makes it sublime. Until You Fall is cerebral, it's gorgeous, its deep, its complex... its everything. It'll also give you a gooood workout without making you feel like it, because when a knight and a hammer dude are both switching off with you, and your adrenaline is pumping, you won't realize that you're swinging that sword so hard and fast until you beat them and you hear the iconic change in background music letting you know the room is cleared. Only then will you notice the buckets of sweat you just created. One last note there, the game is so fun you might overdo it - I have seen multiple RSI-type injuries in the sword swinging arm from playing too much of this in one night. You'll definitely feel it for a few days if you go overboard, so take it easy, even though that's hard when you want to jump back in for just one more run.

While this is listed as Early Access at the time of writing, 7 months ago this game was perfect, and the improvements since then make it even perfect-er. If you're even still reading this, just buy it and start a run. You'll die, you'll buy some upgrades, and do it again. After 4 runs you'll be hooked. I only reached the final boss just before writing this, and he bested me this time, but I can't wait to play some more.

I think there are not enough people in the VR community who know about this perfect gem of a game, and that's a real shame. This is a the level of polish that sucks you fully into the world inside your headset. This is VR done right. This game is awesome.

Very satisfying, deliberate melee combat. The combat has an almost rhythmic quality, with an ebb and flow of attack and defend with even the basic enemies. The enemies I've encountered so far feel varied and interesting. Learning the behavior of each enemy type and perfectly killing one without a scratch feels rewarding. The rogue-like element of the game is executed well too. Only an hour in I've encountered a wide variety of weapon and trait combinations that make each run feel different.

I think the block indicator could stand out more, I can sometimes lose track of them. If I fail to block because my rhythm is off or I was too slow that's fine, but it can feel disappointing to miss it because they blend into the background. I would like the ability to change the color of it, and maybe the distance away from the player as well. There's also a brief loading screen in between sections that turns the whole screen grey which feel unpolished.

On the whole however, the game feels very polished. Little touches like selecting power-ups by squeezing them 2016 Doomguy style is a nice touch, it's nice to see Valve Index features be supported. The voice acting, enemy visual design, and overall art-style look great.

Overall I've enjoyed my time with it and look forward to how the 1.0 release turns out.

This game sets in stone a great standard for VR melee. The blocking and attacking system is intuitive and tons of fun to use, especially when it gets more difficult. The game is a Rogue-like, with stuff like special bonuses and max HP being reset every run, but the weapons you purchase in the hub are permanent.

The graphics are gorgeous, another great example of how VR can be done. All of the visual effects are stunning all together; I always look forward to collecting an item at the end of each stage.

UPDATE: I'm now playing on Oculus Quest with the Link cable instead of Wi-Fi streaming. I've never performed better in this game better before and the progression of skill is fantastic. You really learn to adapt to these enemies and how to tackle them paired with others. Of course you can upgrade weapons, but most of the work comes from the player.

This game is Dark Souls but VR. You will not beat the game without learning its patterns in and out and by god it's satisfying when you do.
