KLASSISCHES ROGUE-LIKE GAMEPLAY TRIFFT AUF MODERNE FEATURES

Review of 10/21 Early Release version: DO NOT SPEND MONEY! on this expecting a finished game. This is most definitely NOT a finished gaming experience. It would acceptable as a Demo or free-to-play Early Access, but I feel bad paying for what is currently available.
While the faction, race, and skills are many and interesting, and the scope of the systems and mechanics that the developer seems aiming to implement are likely to create a fun to play in world, based on the blogs and previous games time frames this will be years in the making.
Currently the game is not very dense; the levels and mob variation are few and the AI is simple, resulting in boring game-play that is also quite buggy.

I disagree with the versioning system that calls the current software a 1.0.0 and actively recommend against anyone from spending money on this unless you are willing to gamble that in the years to come this turns into a similar passion project as the developer's previous Adom game. I will revisit this game in a year or 2 to see if there has been progress, but for now this is not fun for me to play.

===============================================
Notes taken when playing Ultimate ADOM - QA for the Dev
===============================================
Things that are most annoying to players:

-leaving the dungeon[floor 1 -> 0] with no warning ending the character.
-[has caused multiple characters death before realizing user-hack needed to prevent] using a targeted-spell from skill-quick-bar and having the spell not be used but the character move to attack the location clicked and the spell removed from the skill-quick-bar. ui bug; after/before almost every action; having to hover over the skill bar to get the map tiles to be highlighted/register as a viable location to be clicked/to register the click input and respond.
-Kobold rot killing the character on the turn it is expiring?

============
small bugs
============
-When eating Long Dark Sage Corpse [LongDarkSageCorpseFoodMessage]
-Wall of Fire's kills not giving experience? xp tied to on-hit effect stack? intentional?
-calculation of food per step (5/4/3/2/1) sometimes not readjusting lower when item count or items increasing encumbrance are decreased. is only visible/display bug or also counting?

====================================
feature/enhancement requests
====================================
-show information to user/player about floor level #/name when hovering over or clicked staircase-tile
-description of effect/function on scrolls and potions
-limit number of enemies able to travel through stairs per turn?
-add Autosave on floor change?
-still show teleport traps as yellow on mini-map when ring of teleport control is equipped or similar/sometimes it is not shown.
-reduce vertical height when flying as it obstructs the view
-is chaos goo supposed to be able to coat boots when flying?
-[strike]list hair colors in alphabetical order?[/strike]

Do not buy

1- Ultimate ADOM is a dumbed down version of ADOM. Ultimate on the name is a scam to confuse people of what they are purchasing, it is not an improved version of ADOM, it is a casualized one
2- They released the game buggy as hell and in an atrocious state, the game is not finished
3- The developers run away from the title, they don't push updates, they don't fix bugs, they don't answer the forums. This game is abandonware

Do not purchase this game under any circumstance, if you want to play play the classic, do not give them money for this scam.

I thought this was a graphical version of ADOM, and was a little surprised to find that it is actually a graphical version of just one of the dungeons from ADOM and does not include anything not immediately combat related.

This wouldn't be a huge issue, it could still make for a decent dungeon crawl with those limitations, but unfortunately it just seems very buggy and unfinished. Not in the 'needs minor tweaks' type way, but in the 'didn't get around to implementing that' way.

I am also not a fan of having multiple 'go-go-go-go-go' mechanics; the chaos pods filling floors with chaos if you are 'too slow' is particularly obnoxious. Especially as it doesn't seem to scale in any way to level size. Anything over a tiny level you are going to have it start getting flooded before you cover even half of it.

I love ADOM. I love this one too! I really do. Yes, it's NOT COMPLETE- a lot of things have no purpose (several items, things like altars) and others need lots of work (the school of magic for bringing items to life is like, useless, and in general any spell of summoning a friend is extremely weak).

However for what we have so far I am just so into it. I don't know why. I find it very addictive to dive down in again and again and try my RNG luck. Like the original you are at mercy of a lot of odds, but you have a lot of skills and customization going on, and I love the inclusion of skill trees.

Further though on the negatives, again, is the lack of balancing and full features: there's no swimming, for example, but many skills related to swimming. Several items are useless or don't fully display correctly. If you want to live, you pretty much have to conform to certain play styles. I assume you can succeed as a stealth archer, but you risk dying in one hit- to win, be an armored tank. I've played hundreds of times and it's sad to see my high score list almost entirely be troll/dwarf-chaos knight- male.

I really am holding on that we will get more content to flesh things out, balance them, and even add more spell options so the early game is less repetitive. People with complaints are valid, but I just still really, really enjoy playing this!

Please don't but it. This is not finished product and it should be in early access. This game doesn't cover even faction of the promised content. It has just one cavern, few quests. Even diagonal movements doesn't work. What is disappointing is that development doesn't happen any more. Looks like the author cashed out and forgot about the project.

Good fun, NOT recommended at this point.
It is late January and the last update was in October.
Many, many bugs that need fixing and features that obviously missing.
Some are game braking, like the huge lag (memory leak?).

Wait for some serious update(s) or really deep discount to get this.

I will preface this by stating I did get a review copy of the game and was paid for an activation.. But I really did not enjoy this game at all. It was slow, cluttered and clunky even for an old school rogue like. The game needs a lot of work to feel fluid and maybe add in some variances here and there, the game felt incredibly repetitive and just not really all that fun.

This game has a lot of potential to be a lot of fun. As it stands, it suffers heavily from weird UI bugs that prevent clicks from registering. When the UI works, the game is very slow to respond - especially in the inventory. It seems to take 5-6 seconds every time you attempt to eat, drop, equip, etc an item from your inventory. Given how much this game requires proper inventory management, you'll be stuck for a frustratingly long time as you wrestle with this.

I've been on maybe... 15 runs so far, and two of those were ended prematurely due to the UI becoming unresponsive.

I hope the devs can come through and polish up these issues. Until they do, I can't recommend anyone choose to spend money on this game.

It wasn't ready to be considered a full release. I get what the goal was here but some of the improvements are almost impediments. It's clunky. I find Dwarf Fortress Adventure mode to be a smoother experience. There is potential here, and it can be fixed, improved and expanded upon, but the devs haven't really shown any indication of any intention of doing so. Therefore, this is not a roguelike you should buy at this time. There are much better options.

I purchased it while still in Early Access. But then it was moved out to full release with only one update. It's functionally still very much EA/alpha state, it is *not* complete yet. It *is* playable, but it is *not* a finished game as it is being sold as. With so many features still so obviously missing and little in the way of updates since October (it's about to be January) I can't recommend others spend money on it.

Respond to the damned criticisms about your unfinished game, devs. This was clearly not ready to leave early access. You CAN'T play a summoner in any cramped area, period, because there's no way to just move past them (Or if there is, I haven't discovered it and the game doesn't cover it).

First of all, my low game hours is because Steam doesn't count offline playtime.

That being said, I DO NOT recommend this game, to anyone. Especially not to fans of the original. Dungeon features are unimplemented except for infinite chaos goo spread. You will end up as a mindless chaos spawn, which is game over, if you move too slowly, or spend even one too many turns healing instead of heading straight down to your death. Seriously, who thought that it was a good idea to make a roguelike into a timed mission?

Can't recommend this.

The tutorial has a bug where it tries to teach you how to graft an arm onto your body for an extra weapon. But following every step nets you a failure to graft because it can't find the arm in your inventory.

The game has the same bug I pointed out 8 months ago, which a Dev responded too; items on the ground give fake stats. A hat may say it gives you +1 Dodge Value on the ground, only to give you nothing when you pick it up.
I had a Mithril Small Shield say it gave +2 Dodge Value and +3 Armor Value. An improvement over my Masterwork Small Shield (+1 Dodge Value, +3 Armor Value). But when I equipped it, I LOST 1 DV & AV. For no reason.

The fact that they boasted of a full release with such bugs still in the game shows a complete lack of respect for fans of ADOM. They did not fix anything, then 'released' the game in order to milk a few more dollars out of fans waiting for a stable release, and now they can walk away with the money.
Do yourself a favor; Play Tales Of Maj'Eyal (ToME) or Dungeonmans. Both are great roguelikes. I love ToME, even if it can be very confusing at times.

Can't recommend this, game should never have been released at 1.0.

Outside of gameplay/balancing issues, the game is a bug filled mess.

The original ADOM was a roguelike classic, unfortunately this game is related in name only and appears to have been a low effort cash grab.

Not perfect but easy to recommend. As someone who has played ADOM over the years but not recently, it is familiar and accessible, and immediate fun. Certainly could do with some more UI fine tuning, and I've no doubt that experienced recent ADOM players would find more elements to be frustrated about in comparison to the original, but overall I'm really enjoying it.

I don't know how this game can say it is in full release. I think a big issue is that the tutorial only gives you the basics of the game without more information being given elsewhere. I have so many questions, like where are towns? Shops? Quests? I've progressed to floor 10 without answering any of these questions. Compared to the first one there is so much missing content. But all this feels like is a dungeon crawler where all you do is keep going down floors without anything else. The first game had much more to it, with towns, NPCs, etc. I also don't even know where to gain information for abilities that are in the game as no one seems to be responding much in the steam forums or the one on the ADOm website. How do you befriend animals? How do you craft arrows?

I simply can't recommend the game in its current state.

I have played a lot of the original ADOM. This sequel is still so much a work in progress, but as the early access has progressed, I feel like i've seen the game progress immensely and think it will grow over a very long period of time and provide a great deal of entertainment over the years as it's developed.

The current version is buggy and crashes and a lot of the content is half-finished (it is early access), but between the progress I've seen throughout my years playing the original adom, the progress i've seen throughout early access, and the fun i've already had playing this, I think it will be a fun great game, although it is still very much unfinished right now.

Eventhough you are feeling that this game is an Early Access game this game is absolutely awesome.
There are a few things which are not as good as you want to be atm (well.. its an early access) but I was pretty surprised about the potential that game has!

I wrote a big sheet with suggestions of improvement so we can feel the whole potential in a few updates<3

Overall, Ultimate ADOM is shaping up to be a fun game. I like the friendly UI, art direction, skills and turn based combat. I'm really looking forward to the combat improvements coming up. As a new player to the ADOM games, I also bought, and have been playing ADOM (which I also enjoy). So far, Ultimate ADOM is a different beast as compared to ADOM. It feels more streamlined, condensed, and user friendly. I dig that. Can't wait to see more as the game is further developed.

I'd recommend holding off before purchasing to see how much it develops. I may upgrade this to a thumbs up if things improve.

I still vividly remember playing games when I were a kid and lost all of my progress after getting beaten up by that boss, just because there were simply no save game option in the earliest of games. I feel this excitement with Ultimate ADOM again, and it is close to these gone days, where beating the final boss felt like an epiphany. When I once again create a new character and dive into the caverns of chaos it makes me feel the thrill of surviving, or basically not dying – and losing all my progress once again.

I only recently got into the whole domain of roguelike games and basically into games which are a bit harder on the average player. Modern games seem way to forgiving and quickly reloading because you took to much damage, became a habit that is not helping the overall gaming experience today.

That is definitely not the case here with Ultimate ADOM! I died what felt like a dozen times only playing the tutorial, and this only created an even bigger surge to exceed and improve my skills, to eventually be able to beat this game. The overall atmosphere, story, crafting and skill tree complexity and countless of different types of monsters you will face are amazing. But the dungeons, endless ways to kill your foes and strive to survive makes it a truly recommendable game. But beware, you will die. A lot.

At first I was a bit put off by the existing negative reviews but I was still curious to try out Ultimate ADOM. It seems that the team already has addressed many of the issues found in early negative reviews. The update speed seems to be great and I am very optimistic about where this goes in the near future. You can notice the team designed everything in mind for future extensions and I'm sure it will only improve further over time.

I am the huge fan of the ADOM series, from the ASCII version till the most modern for today, 0.7.5 UACOC, and started playing the game long before the kickstarter campaign. Played even JADE based ADOM II.
What I would like to say:

1) I love the speed of changes, the amount of features implemented each release. Actually, each new version plays like another game and brings the new experience. Great work!

2) I appreciate the ABSENCE of diagonal movement in the game. How so? I have been playing the old ADOM on PC and on notebook and sometimes was really frustrated - in old ADOM the diagonal movement was one of the important tactical features, that saved lots of character lives. That's why playing without numeric keypad was a torture -- and my notebook doesn't have a numeric keypad. Now, in UACOC, the diagonal movement is disabled -- it means that the gaming experience would be the same on any keyboard type. I consider this fact as a great attainment, strange as it may sound.

2.5) In 0.7.5 version the diagonal movement is not absent totally -- X'x Orc has something that can help moving diagonally. And I'm totally fine with this kind of movement :)

3) The overall performance is the main disadvantage of the last versions. The 0.7.5 version was a huge step forward, nevertheless it's not enough yet -- the game is very CPU-demanding, that results in microlags (sometimes not so micro-), especially in comparison with the old ADOM. As for me, only supersmooth and superfast work can make the thousands (and tens and hundreds of thousands) same-type moves not frustrating

4) Dear developers, if you are reading this, please, be more responsive on your bitbucket project, if it is possible. Some issues had to wait for your answer for weeks. I totally understand that the amount of work you are doing to release by schedule is huge. But several players (including me) send reports regularly, and it's not obvious, if you need this kind of work at all.

For the moment, I totally recommend buying the game and support the DevTeam.
The road is very-very long and I hope and believe that the Devs are able to create a masterpiece.
Thank you, Dr. Thomas Biskup!

Yes I would recommend this game to people who enjoy the genre. No I wouldn't recommend it to people who aren't huge fans of roguelikes, people who enjoy the rich pleasures of diagonal movement, or people who aren't willing to be patient with early access.

This game LOOKS and FEELS extremely good, but this isn't an early access release, this is straight up an alpha. The games riddled with bugs and errors that you WILL encounter often. Don't buy it.

It's just broken. At the current stage, after more than 14 hours of gameplay I can say: don't buy it. Bugs and bugs that most of the time makes the game unplayable. Tooltips? Missing. 99% of the runs you will die because some weird bug or poorly implemented mechanic. I lke the visuals and the game type but thats it. Maybe at some point in the future I will give it a go again, but not for now. Wish I had more time to get my refund...

Wouldn't recommend as a purchase for the following reasons:

1. Sloppy broken code. Any number of weapons cause cascading error windows each time they are finished. I've never seen a 'large rock' function as a projectile, but it sure does fuck the game up if you try. Sometimes race and monster names break and they just show up as the name of the variable used by the code. Ditto for many weapon and armor effects.

2. Nonsensical design choices. Why is there hunger and food and corruption and such if none of it functions whatsoever? Why does every projectile have to be manually picked up? Lack of diagonal movement is OK...I guess...but doesn't seem to serve any inherent purpose.

3. Not a real game in its current form. There is no challenge because hunger hasn't been implemented and monsters spawn infinitely. Every game is as easy as you want to grind for. Some levels are broken due to poorly implemented teleportation traps. Sometimes the wheel to choose abilities and actions from just disappears, permanently. Balance is largely nonexistent. I've only died to one-shot crits from named enemies...most runs are ruined by errors and bugs.

I am very hopeful that development continues and the game evolves into something great, but after having sunk too many hours into it to refund, I suspect that developers who would ask for money for the game in its current state are probably not going to do much.

TL;DR - It really has nothing to do with ADOM...its like a crappy mobile implementation of a fraction of ADOMs content. The engine is cool, but also doesn't really function very well. Just buy ADOM and watch to see if this becomes a functional product in the future.

Need more cooking time for this game to be ever ready.
Some features are missing in this game for example hunger and character customisation
Currently, I am not sure why am I in this dungeon.... Also, jump action feels useless as it is the same as walk
I will wishlist wait for a year and come back ....

Review based on Early Access version 0.7.3.

Just thinking about ADOM transports me back many, many years, into a different world. A world of text based graphics, green, orange and blue @’s, many, many dots, hashtags, slashes and coloured small and capital letters. Into a world providing a canvas for your imagination with a multitude of ways to play, endless variety, incredible mechanics and even more incredible ways to die. And all that in ASCII characters on your screen.

Through almost 25 years of development, the original ADOM turned into one of the best and most encompassing roguelikes ever, even getting an enormous facelift with the graphical Tile mode. ADOM is very much an old school roguelike, a remnant, a relic even, from a gaming era that time forgot. The enormity of things available and implemented is staggering and the rules are complex, but not insurmountable. And it’s still available for free, in original ASCII and in the newfangled Tile mode, as well as on Steam with some added bonuses due to Steam integration, such as Network mode, Ghost Exchange and Steam achievements. If you have any interest in roguelike RPG’s, book a session with ADOM. Or two. Or thirty two.

Fast forward over a quarter of a century later, to an Early Access version of Ultimate ADOM – Caverns of Chaos. A bare bones, simplified mechanics, cumbersome interface, buggy and glitchy mess of a pre-alpha nostalgia caressing vagabond, tripping all over himself while staring at a catch-all roadmap that has all the answers to his future. Like a crumbling fortune cookie. Without going into discourses on what is or should be Early Access, let’s just go with there is such a thing as too early for Early Access.

Ultimate ADOM, for now, seems to be going into a different direction than the original. It’s still a classic dungeon crawler, with character creation, procedurally generated dungeons, tons of monsters, vast number of items, spells, skills and ways to die. But it seems to be moving into simpler mechanics and a smaller, more compact world, presenting you only the Caverns of Chaos to explore with additional side dungeons accessible from the main Caverns. That’s not really a bad thing, roguelikes evolved, so don’t pull out your torches and pitchforks yet.

The problem is that the state of Ultimate ADOM is, at the moment of writing, dreadful. Besides a very limited amount of content, there are lots of missing mechanics and features. Corruption and hunger meters do nothing. Reading the scrolls doesn’t work, yet they still appear in-game, as do other items that seemingly have no use. You can choose a faction when creating a character, but there is nothing associated with them. Some of the descriptions and monster names appear to be placeholders, as do some of the visuals because I ran into a Necromancer that was a bunch of floating question marks and a couple of monsters that had visuals with an attached floating question mark.

On a technical and mechanical level, the UI is, even after a patch, very clunky while many times not offering useful information or even offering completely wrong information, such as items displaying different statistics on the ground and in your inventory or weapons having different values in your inventory and when equipped. The movement is only four way, not eight way, there’s no diagonal movement. You can’t keybind all the options yet, so you need to use your mouse along with the keyboard.

I’ve had the UI randomly freeze and lose focus, making you unable to target or click anything with a mouse until you open your inventory, use a keyboard to move or do an alt+tab. I’ve also had the enemies on the entire level completely stop responding, moving or attacking and after killing them all, when I wanted to click on auto-travel on the map, the game completely froze and I had to forcefully close it. The game also throws random exception errors with big red buttons continue at your own risk or quit game and becomes laggier the longer you play it, becoming borderline unplayable on certain dungeon levels. The same level that froze on me froze again when I encountered it a second time, this time when I went down the stairs to the next level. Save and load function, which Early Access launch started without, was thankfully, added in the 0.7.2. patch.

It’s not all uncontrolled ChAoS. The content that is there does look promising, with some very neat ideas and a 3D ASCII mode that’s a cool touch, there’s no arguing that. The dungeons can be rotated, visuals are sharp and colorful, music is catchy, skills are varied, displayed statistics are fully customizable and the controls, clunky as they are, do work. Descriptions of monsters and enemies are easily the highlight, with some creative writing. Grafting skills allowing you to use chopped off enemy body parts, attach them to yourself and turn into a four armed, axe wielding bearded monstrosity is my absolute favourite. The roadmap lists a lot of interesting and promising things, but they’re not here right now and it’s a question when they will be.

It may be going the simplified route, but as I said, that might not be such a bad idea for new generations and a much wider audience. Yes, you’re very likely not giving your 20€ to a soulless AAA corporation milking Early Access (maybe just a smidgen of milking), but supporting a developer that, from prior experience, listens. But, tar and feathers. This, in it’s current state should not have been released in Early Access for the general public, but left in the invite only pre-alpha for more testing and polishing.

If you’re a fan that must, at any cost, graft an extra head and wants to be part of the community that “made the game”, are aware what you’re getting into and might possibly be itching for a donor memorial spot like the original ADOM has, toss a 20€ to the devs. Know that you’re paying for a promise that’s very far away, but that will probably be fulfilled somewhere along the road unlike many other Early Access games. In any other case and if you’re itching to try a majestic, old school roguelike, go buy the first ADOM. It’s 14.99€, an immeasurably better experience born and grafted from 25 years of blood, sweat and tears and you’ll still be supporting the devs. And come back in October 2021, or in 25 years, to see has the ChAoS in Ultimate ADOM been calmed into more orderly ChAoS.

Take a peek inside the Cabinet of Curiosities if you like to walk off the beaten path and only sometimes return to the main roads. You might find something worth exploring. And if you do, thank you for the visit.

So I love Adom, a played it in its original form many years ago and fell in love, then I found the updated version and loved it as well and now we have a sequel. So the big question is it any good..... Kinda its bare bones at the moment as you would expect from an early access and there are a few issues however the basics are good, the devs respond to problems quickly and updates are flowing at a quick rate. So if you want a finished game Nope if you wanna play a game with loads of potential with devs that interact with the community for development then this is for you.

Early access review.

Bottom line, buy the game. Its state is pretty atrocious right now, even for an EA. But this situation is unique. This isn't a dev trying to swindle you. He really is going to use the community to build his to do list. He works slowly, but listens. If you've got a good idea, its actually worth posting in the forums with this guy.

I've played roguelikes for 30 years. This is an early access, but I think its a step in the right direction. The original ADOM is a great game, but its open world mechanics are actually quite shallow. It appears the devs getting away from that and opting for a branching dungeon structure similar to DCSS.

There's a lot to flesh out. The devs have expressed concern about balancing attracting a more players and turning off their base - I can tell you now, they can make as modern a GUI as they like, as long as full key bindings are an option. Right now they're not and its kind of obnoxious. Most RL players use keyboard only.

I haven't tinkered with the game options, but this is a more forgivable experience, at least in the first few floors than the original. I think the skill system has tons of potential too. Farming stat herbs in the first ADOM was fun in its own way, but very much a grind. It appears we're going to get the option to really tailor our characters without having to dive too deep into forums and/or experiment with the game to unleash hidden and vital progression mechanics. I'm frankly good with that.

Looking forward to seeing this game grow.

Maybe in a year? At the moment it's just boring and no save if you want to go to do something else. I spent 40 mins just hitting stuff with the dwarf, no fancy upgrades, interesting gear ,challenging enemies or anything interesting at all. Very bare bones.

Although I don't recommend the game in its current state, I do recommend that if you love(d) ADOM and want to support the devs with this new endeavor, then by all means you should add this to your library. I will be HAPPY to change this to a thumbs up when the time comes and I am certain that it will come. I will not be asking for a refund and will be watching this title with a close eye. The best way to pick this up is via the bundle as you can get lost in the original ADOM and can watch this one develop over time.

That said, just because it's a downvote doesn't mean that this is a terrible experience - it is simply in a very rough state and opening it up to early access means subjecting itself to user reviews. Perhaps releasing this as a demo instead would have been a better option.

Moving on, this is a straight-up dungeon crawler and if you have any experience with its predecessor or any other true roguelikes, you have an idea of what to expect, albeit with bare bones. However, given that this is a very early release, there's a lot that isn't here, though there are shells of it in place. For example, food and corruption don't seem to do anything (which is fine; I hate having to eat in games), a shortage of classes and races, and [strike]there is currently no way to save your progress so you'll either have to idle or do your run in a single sitting, barring any CTDs[/strike] you can now save your game!

As far as aesthetics go, the game looks great and the sprites are full of character. Switching to ASCII mode isn't quite as charming as it's not a true ASCII and more of a specific tileset (though it looks kinda neat if you change the camera to 3D).
A lot of the interesting things that you may encounter don't really have a lot of functionality at the moment - for example, I could not figure out how to do anything with switches except destroy them. Some of the procedural generation seemed wonky as well - as an example, I went down a floor into a room that had no exits, broke all my weapons trying to find a way out, backtracked and crashed to desktop. It is what it is.

The UI is where this game needs a lot of work. A lot of it is mouse-driven (which is fine; we RL players need to evolve, too haha) but it is sluggish. Tooltips are hugely important and I somehow managed to break them, but only once so far (and I have no idea how I did it). Actions are all context-driven rather than by hotkey; you can still use the keyboard to perform most actions, of course, but you will need to hit 'e' to get a context menu up this time around. However, when you right-click on items, there's this odd delay for the actions to come up. There is also a bit of disconnect between what you can do in your inventory versus what you can do within the dungeon. For example, right-clicking a potion in your inventory only allows you to drop it, but opening up the context menu on the dungeon floor allows you to choose to quaff one and pick from a menu. Little things like this make the experience feel very rough and atypical of most early access releases.

Regardless, I have high confidence that the dev team will get things solidified as the weeks and months come, but as of today's release, I can't really tell you to nab it and start playing. If you're on the fence, give it some time and let the early kinks get worked out, then come back and see where it's at. If you've never played ADOM, go do that first (and be sure to pick up the commercial version to support the devs). If you are an ADOM veteran, then you already know what to do.

TL;DR - Get this to support the devs and let them realize the game's as-of-yet untapped potential. In its current state, there's not a lot here except bashing on monsters until you die or the game finds a way to break. There's no quests or story to navigate right now, so you're in for a very raw experience.

Wouldn't recommend for now as it feels extremely barebone.
A lot of mechanisms are not implemented, UI is obnoxious, no save, character progression doesn't seem to give a lot of room for actual choices, and combat is extremely boring as very little tactic is involved (just click on the next target).
Also after 3 hours the game became very laggy.
There seems to be a decent amount of content and the graphic design is good, but it is hard to see if this game will have potential to keep interest for more than a couple hours nevertheless.
