Turok is back and no dinosaur is safe! When it was first released in 1997, Turok introduced gamers to a world teeming with cunning enemies, traps, puzzles and deadly weapons all within a vast 3D environment ready to explore. Now the classic game has been restored and enhanced with a new visual engine and exciting new features to sink your teeth into!

The Lost Land...
A world where time has no meaning - and evil knows no bounds. Torn from a world long gone, the time traveling warrior Turok has found himself thrust into a savage land torn by conflict. An evil overlord known as 'The Campaigner' seeks to shred the fabric of time and rule the universe using an ancient artifact known as 'The Chronoscepter'. The Chronoscepter was shattered thousands of years ago in an effort to keep it from falling into evil hands. The Campaigner has constructed a massive focusing array which he plans to use to magnify and pervert the power of the Chronoscepter in order to shatter the barriers between the ages and rule the universe. Turok has vowed to find the eight pieces of the Chronoscepter spread throughout the Lost Land and put an end to The Campaigner's evil plot...

New features include:
 • Support for high resolutions, and widescreen
 • Improved gameplay and level design
 • OpenGL for video backend to provide portability and support for vertical sync
 • Dynamic lighting, bloom, FXAA, enhanced water effects, lights shafts and more
 • Ability to freely rebind all keyboard, mouse, and gamepad inputs

I WAS TUROK!

I have never played the original Turok, as a preface to this review.
Turok is a fun piece of history for the era of First Person Shooters on the Nintendo 64. It is not a particularly stellar game by any means- let's get that out of the way. It is no Golden Eye, it is no Perfect Dark. I would recommend it in general for a casual play-through to one who is interested in either reliving some nostalgia, filling an afternoon with a retro shooter, or curious to learn where this IP began its FPS origins.

Performance

Absolutely nothing game-breaking happened to me during my playthrough. NightDive did well to provide a very smooth experience

Design
This game follows a hub-world system wherein the first level you enter (level 1) is actually a hub in which you can explore, gather keys ( those blasted keeeys), and find the level selection zone. I wish I knew this after running around level 1 for 10 minutes trying to figure out where level 2 was.

What I did not expect is that Turok is both an FPS and a pseudo-collectathon game. There is a save system, but you do also collect lives. You can also gain more lives by collecting.... triangles (Super Mario style). It is a fairly enjoyable design choice as the combat is not particularly challenging (I'm sure it was more difficult with the N64 controller and at 15fps). The collecting and combat you do is spliced up with some exploration and platforming. The big sticking point with the exploration aspect is that it is actually mandatory to explore thoroughly because in order to access each successive level, you will need to have found all the keys for that level. This makes exploration a little more paranoid inducing than it could have been for me.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2797925856
(A save shrine)

Sadly if you want to finish this game without doing a healthy amount of backtracking and wall rubbing
(many secret areas are behind noclip walls which is usually not in good taste)
, you'll just want to look at a guide to find the few tricky key locations.

Gameplay

The arsenal in this game is actually not too bad. You gain many weapons over the course of the game, with some having some kind of alternate ammunition type to use, which is a pretty neat thing for the time. Sadly, the arsenal of weapons seems almost a waste when you consider the arsenal of baddies the game has you fight. There is some visual variety to the enemies, though functionally many of them are the same, or very similar. The game isn't good at giving you interesting combat scenarios. Which is the case for a few reasons...

Part of what makes the combat generally uninteresting is the plethora of supplies you seem to have at all times. This is done in some clever ways though such as having optional portals scattered throughout all levels that teleport you to a (usually safe) platforming zone that give you a chance to stock back up on some health, armor, or ammunition (and triangles). This is a pretty neat concept which in theory would help to break up the gunplay with some platforming while also giving some difficulty padding to those who need/want it.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2797925865
(Trippy Platforming zone that is typical of these portals)

I really didn't find myself using these portals though as they just slowed my progress through the level down, and I was virtually always stacked with supplies.

Levels

I found the first 3 levels pretty boring. Lots of big open areas that seemed generic. Though once level 4 hit, each level had a very distinct style and flavor, with some levels actually being pretty fun or interesting to explore due to added visual identity and more meaningful or intricate level design.

Art

The game is not pretty. Remember that this game was for the N64 console. Plenty of memory-saving tactics are at play here such as a limited number of sound effects, music (you'll love it if you like 3-second loops of drum circles), color palette, and draw distance. Of course chunky polygons are to be expected for an N64 game as well. I'll admit, there is some definite charm there.

This guy actually seems like he's having an all right time:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2797925821

Nothing spectacular visually is really going on in this game. The first 3 levels in particular are drab to look at. There are some amusing enemy designs here and there, and a handful of instances that will have you bat an eye but only because it stands out from the rest of the usually visual-pace of the game which is just varied enough to be entertaining.

Conclusion

If you've played a first person shooter like DOOM or Quake before, Turok will not surprise you. It is a great port of a mediocre game that will still be worth a try for some. What NightDive Studios has done is help to preserve some console FPS history that many remember fondly. With FPS being a console niche at the time, I can see why this game was memorable and enjoyable to those who played it. Given its shortcomings, it may still be worth a gander or some nostalgia. For me having never played it before, it was worth the 6 or so hours it took to 100% the game (with guides for secrets of course).

Torok is the main character in this game. He is a indian. Not the one with the dot on his head but a fether in his head. Everybody hates him, including dinosaurs, even though he done nothing wrong. He just likes to chill and smoke weed and eat corn, but everyone tries to hurt him so he's forced to fight back. He's really a very peaceful indian just trying to make his way back to outer space. Along the way he finds tremendously powerful weapons and kills people who don't understand his culture. Great work Turok!
He can also jump.

I love old N64 games, back in the days where you had to check every nook and cranny for secrets, making sure to collect all map information and hugging the walls to make sure you find everything that a level has to offer. PC Turok looks so much better than the N64 variant, even after upscaling graphics on RetroArch and such, but it does so with fidelity to the old one, it just looks sharper and higher res, as it should be. Also, the audio has an option for N64 music or new PC variants, the N64 are much better to me, the PC music audio seem like washed down, looping versions of the originals. After I get 100% achievements, I'm doing the same for Turok 2, for Turok 3 I will have to emulate it, shame they couldn't bring it to steam.

Got the key from Humble Bundle, but only recently played and finished.
Its a shame really. That I waited so long to play it.

For an N64 FPS game from 1997, it holds up well. Having never played it when it first released (due to not having the console it came out on. Or a PC) I cant be entirely certain how much of that is due to the original game, or the remaster.
Either way, it plays well. The jumping took a few minutes to adjust too, but the sheer level of control you have over your own height, speed and movement angles mid air is refreshing and very satisfying.

Jumping large distances at a sharp diagonal to run a little a faster, and subsequently landing on a tiny rocky platform is a surprising thrill. I really must replay Mirrors Edge now I think on it...

Improved graphics aside, it runs smoothly, and has a large number of quality of life features. Those who want to crank the field of view so high you can see both inside yourself and to the moon, rejoice, you lovable weirdos have the option. You can enable a crosshair, or keep it off, disable the head bob and body sway from running left/right. Although I must admit a guilty pleasure to the way the camera bobs and weaves almost drunkenly. It kind of helps to convey a sense of speed. Improved render distance is another option, I played only with it on, and thus have no opinion on how it impacts things.

Yes its a game that shows its age (my god some of the goofy animations are laugh inducing, looking at you third person view of the main character running) but its charm and gameplay speak for themselves. Well they would, if they could speak.

A final note must be made about the music however. It is absolutely fantastic, each track, whilst a little simple, has immense character and impact. Each track standing on its own. Some of them may stick with me long after. Perhaps even joining a playlist to be re-enjoyed.

Older but with plenty of life in its bones, Turok achieves the most important goal of all. Its damn fun.
So if you like older games, like the idea of dispatching some dinosaurs, or feel like something new (from.. an old game) give it a try.
If its your thing.

They did a great job emulating this classic N64 game, to the point where you forget that you are playing an emulator. The developers did the smart thing and left the core game alone, instead focusing on quality of life features like framerate and high definition screen resolution. The game is just as addictive now as it was in 1997, and truly brings us back to a time when games were all about gameplay first and foremost. Turok doesn't hold your hand; this is old school gaming at its finest! The death animations and screams of your dying enemies are awesome; the death animations are a welcome change from the cliche rag doll physics that dominate FPS games these days, and the level design is nothing short of outstanding. You can play this over and over and never get tired of it. Also, what a kickass soundtrack! Those drum beats really hit you right in the primal feels. GET THIS GAME!

When I was 5 years old, I was so scared of this game I couldn't even complete the first level. 24 years later, I beat it in one sitting and could not put the game down.

Turok is actually a really good game, even for today's standard of crazy graphics and in depth complicated stories. This brings you back to a simpler time where you just go from point A to B killing whatever is in your path. Why is a Native American man running around killing dinosaurs and humans with a knife, bow, machine gun and other crazy weapons? I have no idea but it was fun as hell.

There is a nice weapon variety in Turok (even though some weapons share ammo), decent enemy varieties, and RAPTOR CYBORGS. That's right, dinosaurs with lasers! Freaking awesome! The level design is nice, I always love games that have an overworld hub where all the levels are accessible. The map is extremely useful and I like the dev's choice where you don't see a crosshair. If you're not a fan of it or have trouble aiming, I learned pretty fast that the tip of the icon representing you on the map lines up perfectly with the center of the screen. Boom, instant crosshair!

This game is extremely nostalgic for me, totally worth a buy for anyone who remembers this game from their childhood or is just curious about hype of older games. Definitely a gem in my book and I loved every minute of it.

This classic still holds up today thanks to the small additions from Nightdive. I don't remember getting very far on the N64, if I even got through the first level, so I can't attribute it entirely to nostalgia. The gameplay is simple, coming from the Quake era of shooters, but if that's what you're seeking then you can't go wrong with Turok.

So, unlike the vast majority of the people that have left positive reviews here, I never played this game as a kid. Hell, I didn't even knew it existed.

With that said, I had so much fun playing this. You just have to wrap your head around the fact that this game is 25 years old.

There is no bullshitting around, you hit play and get right into the action. You're a time-traveling american native and there are some bad dudes making dino-cyborgs that need to be stopped. There's nothing else you need to know.

Controls are smooth and almost every aspect of the game can be modified in the options menu until it fits. You can have old-school auto-aim shooting or modern precision with a crosshair. Even though it's a shooter it highly encourages exploration of every corner of every level with its key-finding system. If there's a path, there's a reward for taking it: Ammo, health or a new weapon. You start with a bow and a knife, and by the end of the game you go around annihilating hordes of soldiers with plasma cannons.

Good stuff. Wishlist it and wait for a sale though.

Flawless classic game. Wait for a steam sale. I´ve paid about 5 bucks for this masterpiece of the game history.
Don`t buy it, if you are only playing triple A video graphic cheater games. What u see is rudimentary but full of creativity in the earlier years of game developing.

Turok 1 is not the most engaging FPS from the 90s, but if you are interested in this game, you can't do much wrong with this remaster.

Gunplay: Hitboxes ar so big that it makes enemies hard to miss. Special weapons spices things up.

Platforming: There is too much platforming. But since movement and jumping is so clean, it is never hard.

Collectables: You have to find keys to unlock the next missions. The fast movement speed from the 90s makes it less annoying to look for them though.

Level design: A bit maze-like, but less so than the sequel

Story/engagement: There is not much here. I listened to youtube videos while playing Turok 1.

This is a game about a native-american with a glock shooting dinosaurs.

Turok 2 was a HUGE evolution but this one is fun too even being a humble old-school fps. The amount of platforming you have to do here is the nightmare to anyone who can't do some precise jumping hahaha

Anyway the last boss AI is quite impressive, really fun to fight.

turok is what i consider a 2nd gen fps, games like the original doom and quake being 1st. I played this on the N64, i cant remember anything apart from the music and the hub. If you are like me and really enjoying the retro fps come backs with simple easy to follow puzzle solving that modern day games seem to have forgoten about. or you done loads of drugs in the 90s and cant remember nothing. maybe revisit turok or pretend its a new retro fps game or both. 5/5

Duke Nukem fought aliens, and Doom Guy fought demons.
Tal'Set took on aliens, demons AND dinosaurs.

Turok is a remaster of the N64 FPS classic Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, featuring a Native American badass named Tal’Set on his quest to put a stop to the Campaigner’s ambitions of conquest. You must search for keys, fight hordes of hostiles, and try not to fall to your death through 8 levels set in the perilous Lost Lands.

Right off the bat, this game is unique from other old school FPS games I’ve played recently in that it borrows from N64 and PS1 platformers. You are tasked with traveling to one of the various levels from a hub and finding special collectibles(keys in this case) that grant you access to other levels, which is akin to games like Super Mario 64. Besides that, it has some ‘coin-like’ collectibles scattered about and an extra life system; you collect 100 ‘coins’ and get an extra life. I’ve been playing several classic FPS games for the first time recently, and it’s quite refreshing to play one that differs this greatly.

On your quest, you will face off against the diverse and hostile denizens of the Lost Lands, who will certainly give you something to do as you search for keys and secrets. Among those baddies are the Campaigner’s soldiers, robots, hostile tribesmen, alien invaders from another planet, demon invaders from another dimension, and some of the local fauna simply looking to get their claws and fangs on some tasty human flesh. As it is often the case with classic FPS games, I found blasting through these enemies to be quite fun, even during scenarios in which they posed little to no threat. Most regular enemies go down with a few shots but can still deal some damage if they gang up on a careless player. Besides that, certain enemies will respawn a short while after getting killed, which is of benefit to the game’s pacing. Honestly, I didn’t like the respawning at first, but by having enemies come back to life and continue their attack, the player is forced to keep moving, least they keep spending more ammunition and time than they have to. Just because enemies are easy to dispatch doesn’t mean you can doze off, so pay attention!

To complete his quest, Tal'Set will obtain and utilize various weapons along the way, which are not exactly the most unique, but still fun to use. You start off with a regular knife and the bow, but as you progress, you obtain more practical weapons such as the Shotgun, the Minigun, the Pulse Rifle, the Fusion Cannon(which is just Doom’s BFG 9000), and my personal favorite, the Grenade Launcher. You will also run into explosive ammo for your shotguns and your bow, which are nearly essential for properly dispatching certain types of enemies. Worried about ammo? You shouldn’t be. This game is very generous with the amount of ammo conveniently scattered through the Lost Lands, so as long as you don’t waste time with enemy respawns, you should be fine.

In the end, this was my first time playing Turok, and it was pretty fun. I wouldn’t say I enjoyed this classic to the fullest, since I only played it on Normal difficulty....Perhaps playing it on Hard difficulty would be a good incentive for me to revisit it in the future.

Super badass old-school FPS game that has aged like wine. With an insane arsenal of weapons (from a simple pistol to a quad rocket launcher and alien tech weapons) you take on every enemy possible in a video game (dinosaurs, beetles, various humanoids, aliens, robots, etc.). It has a lot of semi-difficult yet fun platforming and there's plenty of secret locations and collecting to do.

I loved this game as a kid (had it for N64) but couldn't progress far at all because I had no idea wtf I was doing. Now returning to this as an adult, this game is still awesome.

You have to give it a go if you like DOOM/Duke Nukem/Quake/Half-Life/etc.

Would love to see a 2020s remake/continuation of this series.

I can recommend this classic first-person shooter. The game originates from 1997 and you'll notice that in the gameplay and graphics.

You basically shoot your way through the eight levels and search for new weapons, secret areas and keys to unlock the next level. Occasionally there are platforming sections and some levels have a boss fight at their end. But that's pretty much it. No big cutscenes or storytelling. It's as basic as an FPS from that time can be.

However thanks to this remaster it can still be fun to play this old shooter. You just need to be open to classic FPS gameplay and really old visuals.

The game also worked flawlessly on Linux. Thanks Icculus and Nightdive Studios for the excellent port.

If I had to describe this remaster in a nutshell, I'd say it's a good remaster of a badly aged game.

On a technical level, Nightdive have done a really good job. The game hasn't crashed on me once, no artefacts, glitches, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they increased the render distance compared with the original.

As for the gameplay itself, gunplay feels satisfying, there is a good feedback when you hit an enemy. The theme is interesting (or should I say, wacky) - it's not everyday you see a game about a Native American fighting dinosaurs and aliens.

A huge flaw of the game is its level design. It's from 1997, from the days of early 3D. There isn't much detail on the maps and they mostly feel like they were done from the same pieces copy-pasted together. Tunnels are the worst, basically being made out of the same cube copy-pasted over and over to create a longer structure.

The keys that are required to progress to the next level are often hidden in locations that in normal games would count as secrets. Funnily enough, on some maps I'd accidentally find secrets first while looking for the obligatory keys. The levels are complex, with lots of forks that instead of flowing from one to another are often dead ends you go into just to get one required item. Combine that with the copy-paste architecture and you end up with maps that are really easy to get lost in. Having to backtrack and wander feels like a waste of time. The enemies respawn quite quickly, but that's not a problem since you can just usually just run past them.

At first I was willing to discount the repetitiveness of level design due to Turok being a 1997 3D shooter... But then I remembered that you had plenty of games released in 1996 and 1997 where levels didn't look all copy-pasted. Quake 1, Quake 2, Tomb Raider, Legacy of Kain to name a few.

I wouldn't recommend it unless you just want to play it to see how your average 1997 shooter looked like.

Turok is a first-person shooter originaly released in 1997 for N64 and PC as Turok: Dinosaur Hunter.
The player takes control of Turok, a Native American time-traveling warrior.
You begin in a central hub level, from there you are able to reach seven other stages by using portals. You have to find keys scattered across the stages to unlock levels and progress and while doing so, you have to deal with different type of enemies, like humans and dinosaurs.
Turok is a remaster which has support for high resolutions, widescreen and an improved gameplay and level design.
The remaster also has OpenGL, Dynamic lighting, bloom, FXAA, enhanced water effects, lights shafts and more.
You can freely rebind all keyboard, mouse, and gamepad inputs. As it is not enough already, it also has the Steam Workshop support. So you can easily download community created content like textures packs and more. There you will also find a model replacement to have robot enemies instead of humans (Germans will love it, as in Germany it was released in a censored version with robots).
This is exacly how a remaster should be done from my point of view, very well done by Nightdive Studios.
I can highly recommend Turok for people who loved the N64 (or PC) version in the 90s and are on the seek for some nostalgia.

Let's be real, most of us remember this from N64. That said, Wow. While most games that are even newer have issues. They did an amazing job porting this to current machines. Having 21:9 support is honestly jaw dropping. Not to mention have a further draw distance which means no more fog like you remember from the N64 days.

The game itself, come on, it is a shooter released in 1997. But if you wanna put yourself back in that time & play an N64 game you might have skipped. This might be one of the easiest ways to do so. (with some quality of life tweaks thrown in)

This is one of the best remasters out there! The KEX-Engine is a genious tool. This is by far THE best version of Turok out there. The gameplay is blazing fast, super smooth and controls great. The soundtrack is incredible and you can choose between the Nintendo 64 original soundtrack (the best!) and the soundtrack from the original PC version.

On the N64, this game was a technological marvel at the time but it pushed the hardware too much and as a result, the controls were extremely slow and unresponsive. This remaster fixes all of it. Much better visuals and controls paired with the pumping soundtrack really make your blood going while you're literally speedrunning through this amazing classic!

If this game had a few QoL tweaks and had modern graphics and audio it would be better than DOOM: Eternal while accomplishing all the things Eternal allegedly set out to do. It does platforming the right way. It forces you to strategically use weapons, ammo, armor, and health. You can't stick with the shotgun the whole time. It's got variety of weapons, enemies, maps, etc; nothing feels repetitive. It's got a moderate challenge curve from level to level. You're constantly working your way through a level, not moving between arcade platforming and boxed-in shooting arenas.

Modern game companies just lost touch with what makes these games great.

One of the first games I bought on the N64 as a kid. I never got around to beating it, so I bought it on Steam, and then later Nintendo Switch - which is where I did finally complete the game.

+ Gameplay is fast. You move fast, and you shoot fast. Fast, unimpeded movement is one of the reasons I vastly enjoy older FPSes over new ones, and Turok is a great example of this.
+ Levels are wide and open, giving you lots of space to enjoy the game's movement in.
+ Lots of weapons.
+ I know many people won't share this opinion, but I think the game looks great for an N64 title. Obviously, this is the remastered version, so it should, but Nightdive did a great job making the game look decent at higher resolutions while still retaining the SOUL of the original game.
+ I like the game's design. It's fun exploring the worlds and finding all the keys so that you can open up the next ones. It's also fun looking for the pieces of the Chronoscepter, the game's ultimate weapon.

- The levels can get confusing. You'll spend a lot of time running around the vast, open areas just trying to figure out where you are. You'll probably also spend a lot of time running around with the map open.
- The platforming segments are terrible. The fast movement, while otherwise a strength, is a weakness here. It can be very difficult to land on small platforms without overshooting them. In many areas, I would open up the map and use that to gauge jump distances, but in some platforming sections later in the game, it can be difficult to see the map because of bright, red lava in the background.
- Not all of the weapons are very useful. The shock rifle feels particularly pointless.
- I had a hard time with the first boss, but then the bosses in the rest of the game were laughably easy. You simply spam bullets. The only real chance you get to use the Chronoscepter in the game is the final boss, because you find the final piece of the weapon right before it - but if you use it, the boss is trivially easy.

Overall: 7/10. It holds up reasonably well, and is a great nostalgia trip if you played it as a kid.

A true classic from back in the N64 days. You play as Turok, a native american warrior ripped from time itself to fight enhanced dinosaurs, mercenaries, and the big daddy himself The Campaigner. The nostalgia alone was worth getting the game, but it is also still fun to play after all these years!

It took me 17 years to finally finish the game. I started on the original and finished on the remaster. When I was a kid I was too scared to fight raptors or those cave creatures. So I was stuck replaying the first few missions over and over again. Now I'm a grown dude and I'm a lot more patient. I say patient because the game will require you to find all the keys in certain areas to progress. So you'll have to go back to the mission you just did and search under every rock and every corner. And I didn't really care for that back then. Overall anyone who buys this game is doing it for the nostalgia. So don't expect a triple A experience if you've never played the game. Other than that, feel free to try out a game everyone adored back in the early 2000's.

Run and Gun genre difiner.

+ Very fast gameplay. Movement speed is fast and enemies always respawn, so you're always on the run. Basicly you never stop running. The gameplay is literraly Run and Gun genre definer.
+ There's lots of platforming for an fps game. Kind of ruins the pace sometimes, but it's fun.
+ Levels are so huge and open. You're free to explore at the cost that it's easy to get lost. Some levels are labyrinths, level 5 is the most confusing of them all. Gladly, map is extremely useful it shows only the areas you've already visited, so if you don't know where to go just check the map and go the the missing ends.
+ Fun and fast boss battles.
+ Tons of weapons and enemy variety for it's time.

- Graphically this is one of the worst looking 3d first person shooters. The fog in the distance, ugly textures, empty environments. It's understandable considering it's age, but other games like Quake aged much better graphically.
- All keys must be collected for level unlocking, but most of them are hidden like secrets and some of them are really easy to miss. You may be forced to use walkthrough depending on how much you explore the environments and how unlucky you are by accidently missing some.
- Lives/save system is annoying. If you die you lose a live and a backback (backpack let's you have double ammo capacity), checkpoints which are not saves, they just respawn you at location after death. The saving locations are seperate. There's not much difference in backtracking from checkpoints and save lacations, so I suggest to load the game after each death other than just keep playing without backpack. There are plenty of backpacks, but not too many and it's much easier with backpack, so it's better to load saves unless you want it more challenging.

I noticed that a fair few of the reviews for Turok all centred on the nostalgia factor—tally up how many mentions of the Nintendo 64 you find to see for yourself. I haven't played Turok, 64 or otherwise. I've played a lot of arena style Serious Samalikes, but Turok doesn't hit the mark for me. I'm sure at one point in my life my mind would've been blown by this game, but even for a retro-obsessive maniac like myself I dunno if there's much point in visiting Turok Town for the first time in 2020.

The biggest problem is that Turok is chaotic and incoherent, in (some) good and (mostly) bad ways. There is zero plot. There is zero reasoning. There is a jungle, and in this jungle are dinosaurs, ogres, men with guns, men with sticks and men dressed as skeletons with guns and/or sticks. And running incoherently through the jungle with a shotgun worked for me, for a little while.

Indeed I was quite taken with the idea of a hub area a la Super Mario 64, where you gather keys hidden inside levels to unlock newer and scarier levels. It's a proven structure and it's very neat to apply this gimmick to an FPS. Credit where credit is due.

But man, the levels themselves are buck wild in terms of design. There's no rhyme or reason, no memorable areas, no continuity—but lots of forks. You basically careen through the jungle and/or ruins and step on warps to other sections of similar jungle and/or ruins, with little cohesion or sense to it. There are blue warps that take you to spooky bonus areas, but different warps often take you to the same already cleared out bonus areas. And the key gimmick I liked sure came back to bite me when I realized they were hidden in the levels. I barely understood how to get through a level, there was no way I could scour it for items.

And wandering around lost is compounded by the way enemies just teleport in randomly in a bright light, with what seems like no end of reinforcements. Teleporting enemies is big mark against an FPS for me, because it's lazy. An enemy placed to ambush as you come around a corner is good game design—it makes every corner a little twitch reaction moment for the player. An enemy appearing from nowhere behind you and mowing you down is bad design—it's a lame cheap shot.

The nail in the coffin is that a lot of actions in the game just don't feel good. Guns work the same at nearly any range, so barring a few rate of fire tweaks they all feel samey. Spending literal minutes listening to our hero grunt as he scales walls is dull and occupies way too much time. Momentum is weird—you accelerate and decelerate very strangely, but your speed doesn't seem to translate when you jump through the platforming sections. Oh, and there are platforming sections, which are never a point in an FPS game's favour.

I'm sure if I had gotten Turok for Christmas when I was 10 I'd think it was incredible, just like I still think Episode 1 Racer and Space Station Silicon Valley are way more incredible than they are. I'm glad someone did the work to make Turok available in a modern format. But for people like me without that nostalgia connection, I think there's better jungles filled with guns to spend your time in.

This game was one of my favorites in the N64 days and it was a nice surprise to see this updated version available at Steam. And what an improvement this really is.

First of all, having the chance to use any control configuration you want totally changes the experience with the game, making it way easier to play than the original (and some of you may remember how weird the N64 version control was). This is specially critical when talking about the platforming sections, and in a less degree when aiming at the enemies (the OG wasn't that strict in this sense).

Second, the graphic improvements (higher resolution, chance to configure your POV, the amount of fog, increased and more stable framerate) breathes new life to the game's visuals, showing what the devs probably had in mind when making the game back in the day. Sure, the enemies' models remain the same and the textures were just slightly improved, but at least IMO the game has aged decently.

Music and sound effects are basically the same, even though they were already very good from the original.

If you played the original N64 version and loved it, I suggest you to get this, you'll be greatly surprised.

I used to play this game on my friend's N64 when I was a kid.
I'm 30 now and this game is still great in my opinion.
The level design and platforming, weapons, and the puzzles make for a great experience.
It does start off kind of slow in the beginning but keep at it cuz and try to explore every corner of each level.
Yah never know what new weapon, secret or key you might have missed.
If you grew up playing Playstation One or Nintendo 64 you'll feel right at home with this one.

I wish more retro games got this kind of treatment
Enough polish to get it working in the modern age but not enough to change it for the worse

*cough* warcraft 3 *cough*

There is no better Turok than this. The music is pristine, the levels are perfect. The graphics were also good, I prefer this more than Turok 2. This one is a lot easier, and shorter. The game is the essential Turok experience you should try. So much better than the N64 version, which has no map. Highly recommended, 10/10

Turok.. is an odd game. I sort of get what the developers might have been thinking at the time in some cases, but it's an odd game. I might argue it's better than Serious Sam for not being entirely about throwing as many enemies as possible at once at you - it's got a lot of verticality and it seems some of the enemies have unique attack patterns, but the levels seem to be large sprawling mazes with random teleports here and there to collect all the bananas to fight the final boss.

Definitely appreciate having an old game ported so that it can be experienced, and for some may be the nostalgia they seek. Otherwise unless you're researching game history or something I'd.. steer clear..

This one is a classic which were supporting only 3DFX cards when released and I never had such videocard so never had a chance to play it. I am glad They have made this version. It was suprisingly fun and well created game. It is giving back the old feeling I am sure it had.

The key part collecting is an interesting idea, but some monsters respawn and they do it really fast.. but the ammo does not.. The developers could create a fully remastered version with better graphics also, but it not bad.. I am not saying that. :)

9/10

It is fun till the moment you realize you've missed to collect a key / couple of 'em needed for the final level to open it. And you are supposed to run through same beaten levels to find that damn keys, and those levels are huge and interesting, but not when you come over to each of them in search for these keys over and over. Nah, not my thing

A game for motion-sickness fanatics (the bigger the FOV, the greater the effect).

Everything feels so generic and cheap even if it's a 20+y old game, it still is not that great compared to the other games from that time.
