I have never been interested in trains or toy trains owning a toy train set. I am now 41 years old and I am enjoying this game so much that I wonder if this is my midlife crisis. Maybe I will now buy a train set.
I am playing through the campaign mode - about halfway through so far. Each level consists of a map with various obstacles and terrain and two or three train stations. As time passes, trains appear in each station with a destination marked on them and every now and again additional stations appear too. Your job is to build the tracks and to control the switches that guide the trains to their destination. When a train reaches its destination you receive income. The quicker the journey, the more you will earn.
Switches are automatically added where tracks connect. You may lay track that crosses over other track, destroy previously laid tracks and destroy obstacles, such as trees or buildings. Building tracks and destroying obstacles costs money and as time passes your money decreases under the guise of annual taxes. When trains crash they blow up and damage everything around them. It's quite fun :)
You successfully complete a level if you reach the end of the time allowed without going bankrupt - exploding trains are fine, but don't run out of money! There are other challenges for bonus points, such as earning a certain amount in a given level or avoiding trains crashing, things like that.
Is it fun?
Yes. Not bad. I got this on discount for less than $1 and it's really good value for money.
I really feel like I am building a toy train set and guiding trains around. It can be very satisfying optimising routes around the map and watching your toy trains pass within tiny spaces of each other, but not colliding. It has a good feeling about it when you do something clever, probably once or twice per level.
This is NOT a transport simulator, it is not an intense puzzle game and it's not a management sim.
This IS a fairly simple puzzle game, building tracks and guiding toy trains to their destination. It is not particularly challenging, but not totally casual either. You will have to concentrate and plan and have the restrictions of budget holding you back a little.

The distinction between worlds and the gradual learning curve make this a good game to pick up quickly, but you still notice a significant improvement on your skills in the late game compared to early game. The challenges make you think on your feet and add a nice, optional extra layer of difficulty on top. I've finished the base game in about 15 hours (after which i'm now writing this review), but that's a good amount of time for a good game. If you don't care about the optional challenges, you're probably done in less time, but who plays a game like this if they don't want to see how good they can get?
The DLC seems to be priced fairly for the amount of content it provides from what I can tell, so if you see me having played more since this review, you know I got myself the DLC to dabble a little more in some train valley action.

Graphics, sounds and music are perfectly fine for a game of this kind and the developers did put quite a lot of details in the game as well. For example you will start out with slow and old trains that are reasonable short and easy to navigate around the tracks. But that's only the beginning: Later on during the levels the trains will get more modern, faster and longer.
Still that's not all. There are hidden gimmicks in the levels that will appeal to yourself during gameplay and keep everything fresh and fun. Of course I won't mention them for the sake of letting you find out for yourself. You most likely will, because this is a classy game you should definitely add to you library. And while you're at it, please do beg the devs to release more levels in the form of DLC in the future. Thanks in advance. ;)

Indeed, now I've decided to buy Train Valley 2 and its DLC while it's on sale, too. That's a pretty earnest endorsement of the original. I haven't seen it get quite difficult yet -- although I expect that to be coming, given comments in some other reviews. But I must say -- the user interface seems pretty well designed, so if it gets very difficult it also seems that I'll have only myself to blame if I can't solve whatever challenge it throws at me.

I thought the price of the bundle was fine for Poly Bridge, Turmoil and Minimetro and just tossed this game aside.
Years later I thought I might just try it for a few minutes and damn me; this game is actually pretty cool!
I really enjoyed the difficulty curve and I loved the moment when my head clicked with the game and I finally managed to multitask multiple trains at the same time.
The music is fine, the visuals do their job and I have barely encountered any glitches.
All in all this is a throughout 'fine' game, if not very ambitious.
Just keep in mind its a puzzle game not a city builder.

It looks very simple, and frankly old-fashioned, but it is highly addictive.
The learning curve is not very steep, but it does get harder as you progress, with some of the later levels needing you to keep cool and stay focused as more and more trains are waiting to go out it can get a bit stressful.
You can do a half an hour game session, but it is easy to spend hours just figuring out where exactly you went wrong in your last try in the later stages.
Replay value is good if you want to finish all the levels with the full set of extra objectives.
I highly recommend it.

- build tracks, put train on track to destination.
- town spawns in middle of track, destroys train and rail line.
- not enough money to build new lines, get charged tax, lose game.

This game is exactly what I worried it was from the video - a switch-management game. So, if you are into the micro-management of trains, and view track placement as a puzzle, this is a great game for you.
I you want a strategic game to employ trains to build a transportation network, this is not the game for you.

If the devs didn't even care making maybe at least a 5 min tutorial...Why did they even bother making a game then?!
And EVEN if I had been smart enough to figure-out how to build proper junctions to avoid those stupid trains to constantly crash into one-another: From the videos I have seen and the absurd tracks design you have to come-up with to have a chance it all works out, the game remains unbelievably boring as there is way to much hands-on work, and very little fun to have here.
At least do NOT expect a little management / train tycoon or railways simulator here. All this 'game' is, is a poorly made and boring puzzle game!

I like to bounce between genres and this game looked like a nice light sim to unwind and relax.
And I have a thing for trains. Don't judge me...
Although the game has basic only two mechanics, it uses them in great depth. In a scenario you'll lay track and manage your trains. You can also control the speed the time goes by and request additional trains to show up. Them trains will apear and need to go to different towns. Your job is to connect the towns laying track and manage when the trains depart and control their routes, simple.
Each level has 3 bonus objectives, and going for them (specially all 3 in one go) can be a nice challenge. This combined with the speed toggle, makes for some nice scenarios. Playing at 1x speed with several trains at once and micromanaging everything feels very different from playing at 4x speed and just trying to get everything routed and going smoothly.
All in all the game surpassed my expectations and I look forward to play the sequel.

As you keep playing you realize it has a conception problem. The maps are way too tight and cramped and don't give you enough room to maneuver. For example, very often, you are forced to place a railway switch very close to a station and if you send the train without checking it, it's too late and your only option is to send the train back into the station, thereby losing the win condition of not having any train arriving in the wrong station. Well there are many other such cases.
The game starts handing your ass to you as early as the third level and it only gets worse from there. Not funny.
The main problem is that the game doesn't know if it wants to be a simple twitch puzzle game or a complex train simulation game and it sorts of sits halfway through, too fast to enjoy the world building and too complex and clunky to play fast.
The User interface is also very bad and annoying and cause for many mistakes.

The only con is there is some RNG in that the next station to open up (or bridge, tunnel, etc.) is not clear. While it adds level variety which is very nice, this isn't a game that you'll be replaying 20 times, but maybe twice. What made it frustrating was that the variation and unpredictability made some challenges very hard to solve because your super smart solution that you figured out after the last try no longer works. Is it a deal breaker? No not at all. Is it frustrating to not have to do more than 10k damage and the trees this time around spawned so you can't build your loop without losing the challenge? Yes. But we are talking about 2 levels of the 25 where this was an issue.

There are really only three things you do in this game:
1. Lay/remove tracks
2. Tell trains to move, stop, or turn around
3. Determine which tracks the trains go on by clicking on the rail switch
There are also three speeds you can go if you find the trains too slow. And there's a nice pause button in case everything is too crazy. You can lay or remove tracks while the game is paused.
The music is charming, the game play and 'stamps' you can earn keep you on your toes, and I had no issues playing. Did find it funny that Detroit was in a desert, so locations aren't exact or anything. But for what it's worth, Train Valley is fun and will happily eat your time away.
The only real downside I can come up with is that the last level, Germany, is Dlc for about 2.50. Lame.

Pros:
- Enjoyable background music and sound effects
- A variety of trains with different speeds, lengths, and styles
- Cute, colourful graphics
- Levels start relatively easy and get progressively more difficult at a good rate, but don't get too difficult
- You can pause time in the game, which makes later more hectic levels much more manageable. Similarly, you can speed up time when things are too slow
Cons:
- The main menu doesn't show you what the goals for each level are, it just gives you a stamp for each one completed. If you want to see what goal you haven't done you need to start the level.
- What's the point of the annual tax? It seems to exist solely to make bankruptcy possible.
- The bankruptcy mechanic is infuriating. If you spend most of your money you should be able to wait for the next train to give you more, but if it's too slow then annual tax will mean you go bankrupt and have to restart the level.
- Rogue trains. These trains appear and and promptly leave stations with no warning instead of queueing up and waiting for you to start them. It's accompanied with a special jingle. This can easily mess up an entire level forcing you to start again to achieve the goals. Thankfully they seem to be very rare.
Verdict: 8/10

+interesting puzzle game
+each level feels somewhat fresh, even if it plays mostly like previous levels
+it's fast (I've been playing basicly entire game on max speed with active pause), so if you mess up and want to start over, it won't put you too far back timewise
+it's cheap
-feels like some features are not clearly communicated, I found out that you can stop a train halfway through last season of the base game
-sometimes obstacles obscure your rails, it is not common, but possible that the arrow to select direction will be beind a building so it's hard to say where it is pointing towards

Pro -
nice little puzzle game
Easy learning curve (as long as you know how to stop your trains- press the train)
Just challenging enough to make it fun but not leave you frustrated
Cons -
No real tutorial (had to learn some stuff on the go)
frustration because of the randomness
Overall I think its a fun game and I would def give it a try!

you have little to no control over track placement because of the map layouts and trains tend to randomly just start going even if a another train is arriving at that station.
To many frustration moments beyond my control to recommend this game.

The small maps and simplistic design elements are good and relaxing, but it's hampered by what seems to be an unfocused vision. What results is a game that is neither a challenging puzzle game, nor a relaxing chill-out game. The amount you can manipulate the game world is far short of a management sim -- you can only lay tracks and flip switches -- and yet the hostile bankruptcy mechanic is eager to cut short any relaxing experience you're trying to get out of the game.
There is no save/load functionality for individual puzzles, either, making the endless mode pointless really -- you can make a really nice train system, but for what?
Furthermore, the devs either don't understand or are unreceptive to criticism -- see the steam discussion thread about the bankruptcy mechanic -- which means that Train Valley 1 feels like a shell of a game, and Train Valley 2 seems not to have learned any lessons from this.
It was fun, for awhile, and I really wish it would live up to that potential, but it doesn't.
