Nichs, was man kaufen sollte, möchte man gern durchweg deutsche Texte haben.

Genau 2.3h.

I much prefer train sim world 2. i am just waiting on the florida route to come to train sim world 2, along with the kansas route, chicago route or just anything that's over 120 miles. train sim classic has alot of long routes, but TSW routes are too short. i am also waiting on the class 57 and the class 76 routes. all the above are my favorites. I have never had issues on either train sim, and alot of work and time goes into making these routes, so the cost is completely understandable. I am looking forward to more trains in both sims.

Good game however base game gets boring as lots of trains cost a lot to buy. I don't know about you but I'm not Mr Moneybags and £20 for a good steam engine is ridiculous. Unfortunately this is what the Developers like to do. Good if you really like trains and have some spare cash otherwise I'd just avoid or wait for a sale.

I love trains. I like that some of the routes NJT run through my town. It is fun to play them. I do think that people who like fast pace combat games may find Train simulator a bit slow. You have to love trains to love Train Simulator. Just my humble opinion.

I would recommend it 10 years ago. By now, it's outdated and has been replaced by Train Sim World 2, which has much more detailed panels, much better graphics and sound and more immersion. Train Simulator on the other hand appears to have stagnated in the past 10 years, they only bump the year. Don't buy any more content for it, go for TSW2 instead. This is like FSX compared to MS FS 2020. Dovetail needs to work on migrating the content from this to TSW.

Mmm, I started with Trainsim World 2. It was very intuitive. As I was looking for more content everywhere on the internet it was content for Train Simulator 2022. So I purchased it. Bit of a disappointment. Graphics where not as good, Interface was a mess. No tutorials.
If you are starting with train simulation go with Trainsim World 2, which is actually the successor for this product.

I have had the trains since 2012 and just passed 1000 hours of travel which speaks for itself. Adding to my collection over he years has made the hobby more enjoyable as time goes on I am approaching 83 years of age and keep hoping that a Newcastle to Carlisle will arrive as I was born at a village on that line and it will also complete a circuit via Glasgow and Edinburgh and Newcastle.

This game is fairly hardcore in terms of simulation, it's not a game you should buy if you aren't a railway enthusiast. A lot of the reviews here don't seem to understand that when it comes to the more hardcore side of simulation you do need to put some money into DLC, that's just how it's been forever - nobody is making you buy every DLC. That being said as a massive railway fanatic I have enjoyed and still am enjoying it. Granted the base game could've seen a lot of improvements over time from previous iterations however there is plenty of DLC to keep you occupied if you are serious about this sim.

Look, it's Dovetail, it's Train Simulator, you know the deal. Some bugginess, a hellish menu interface, some hit and miss over whether broken routes will ever be fixed to satisfaction. People with zero interest in playing it complaining that there's a lot of content. Allow me to let you in on a secret - that €10k of content? You aren't forced to buy it all to have a complete experience. In fact, I think it's physically impossible in one lifetime to fully explore the entire extent of routes and scenarios that have been created for TS. Here's another secret - there's actually even more content for sale here than what is available on Steam. Completism and trophy hunting have led people to believe they would have to acquire all of this to see the 'full' game, which is just not true.

The way to approach this is to view it as something of a model trainset. You buy the basic foundation and stick what you want on that. If you're not a hardcore railfan or simmer just want to dip in and out of various routes, you'll be fine with one of the packs that come out each year. Go back and find an old version on a reseller store if you don't want this year's version. If you're more interested in train travel and sims, you'll probably already have a specific interest in one area, so you'll concentrate on acquiring routes like that. US freight, British passenger transport, Austrian mountain routes - there's a rich amount of content in all these areas, and with third party improvements such as those from Armstrong Powerhouse it's quite clear why there's still life in this, 12 years after its first incarnation. So much, in fact, that as I write this simulator is above its supposed successor, Train Sim World 2, in current players on Steam.

TS is an easy target for cheap jokes, and there is an infuriating habit among the modding community (though many do sterling work for free) of utilising obscure and useless DLC packs in their mods (hello BR Blue pack, hello long-deleted 101 Pack), but for every official release of a train without working headlights or essential safety systems, there's impressive content made with care and attention. Bossman's Welsh Marches, Dovetail's own Semmeringbahn and GTrax's criminally underrated Suisun Bay route are 3 examples of the best of these, and then there's the devs making incredibly complex simulations that Dovetail would never have the freedom to attempt. That's one reason this game has lasted so long - to their credit Dovetail made modding and route-building accessible, meaning third parties work on everything from fun content like Story of Forest Rail to those full simulations, allowing DTG themselves to concentrate on the big crowd pleasers.

In short, don't blame Dovetail for simply adding a number each year and rarely significantly improving the product itself. Blame those of us who have looked a bit deeper and found almost everything we could want from a train sim, and in spite of ancient graphics and out of memory errors, are quite happy where we are, thanks. It's a nice community too, one of the more helpful around - you're very welcome.

After 30 hours+ you really get a good picture of what this periodically rehashed game does well and what it absolutely fails at.

Those of you who just grab a train and drive: Congrats, this one is for you.

Those who want to do scenarios? prepare to always preface a run by checking on forums if your particular chosen route is bugged because it seems to me QA has been catastrophically bad on some routes. And what strikes me most is that those are mostly in the DLC sections. The ones you pay hard money on. Not even a 'Very positive' score on a DLC is enough to tell you if you are getting worth for your money. Dig deeper for bug reports as people tend to report 'it has this and that but in the end it's ok' e.g. this game REALLY rides on the fact that neutral review does not exist.

A good example are the german trains. Some really good runs there and others that are catastrophically bad. Speed limits that keep appearing out of nowhere, signals that dont work and result in a crash, impossible time schedules that result in impossible achievements. The list goes on and you wonder 'why are they selling this broken mess?'

Yet even this is not enough to completely derail the game. Some seriously good runs with freight trains in USA, passenger traffic in Scotland, old school electric trains not to mention steam trains are great to drive.. Got to give thumbs up to the details and ambient. One just has to find these good ones among the non-working stuff. Or do free runs which seems to be the thing many do.

But people who do scenarios: Prepare to work for it, figure out the details before buying and trying.

A neutral review is what would be good about now.

The game is pretty much unchanged since when I first purchased it. There is nothing really compelling to bring me back to play it, let alone spend money on the DLC. I am still miffed I bought the South Wales line and equipment through Steam and then found I could have got the whole Great Western Mainline from the games own store.

It is fun to play for awhile but unless you want to waste a lot of money on DLC of varying quality, just stick to the basic game in my opinion.

I can confidently say that, having played the 2011 version, the game has not changed in the last 10 years in any meaningful way. The change in name each year is purely to keep the game seeming more relevant than it is.
The game still feels like a project slapped together 10 years ago. Trees are flat sprites that turn to face you instead of actual models, the passengers inside the train carriages are, without any hint of hyperbole, worse looking than Gman in Half Life 1. There's next to no optimisation. I can run Warframe in 4K with all settings cranked at 50fps but this game still stutters tremendously while loading another part of the map as I drive along. Even something as simple as changing the audio settings cannot be done unless you quit the session you're in & return to the main menu.
This game truly is a 2011 game wearing the skin of a 2021 game

Poor game. outdated GFX engine, single threads CPUs, mealy content in routes (some of which are only marginally better than MSTS), very very expensive DLC and new routes largely repeat what other developers have already done for free, or MSTS did decades ago on. There's so little to draw you in, and the career scenarios etc are a poorly disguised revenue generator. Neither an accurate sim nor an entertaining game. And if anything goes wrong, tech support blame you, your rig or your OS. That's if they answer your email at all. The game is in dire need of new engine code and a much better attitude to customers and value. Can you imagine if Skyrim shipped with one territory to play and every other character looked exactly like you? This is what TS is like. I'm sorry but my genuine experience has been very disappointing when set against the marketing claims of the company. It is my honestly held belief that others may have a similar experience.

The train simulator series has been superseded by train sim world. The only redeeming quality of train simulator is the route creation, paired with hundreds of payed DLC which can make diverse and unique routes. The problem with this is that the route editor is the worst thing I have ever used in my life. I can not tell you how frustrating creating a route is for something to not work for no apparent reason at all. I do not recommend this game at all, buy train sim word 1 or 2 or any similar games if you want train simulator.

I've owned this game for about a year now and Steam says I've played it for just over 200 hours.

I own a few DLCs, probably 5 or 6, I usually buy when they are on sale.

Overall I enjoy the game and 200+ hours of entertainment is good value for money.

However, you'll see a lot of people slating Dovetail for releasing an old game with just a few tweaks every year and it does feel a little bit dated. Graphics and sound are really OK, the engines do look good but scenery etc doesn't look like 2021 visuals and could use a little work, overall I'd rate it 6/10 for graphics and 7/10 for the sounds.

It does feel fairly realistic, driving a train isn't simple but it is also not too hard so you can enjoy the game pretty much as soon as you start playing. It is tricky to get a 100% score for the career scenarios so there is a challenge if you want that.

I think value for money is quite good, people complain that it would costs thousands of pounds for all the content, but you probably wouldn't live long enough to try every mission if you bought all the DLCs.

I have probably spent less than £100 in total and had over 200 hours of entertainment, that is pretty good in my book.

I will continue to play the game as I have only played 2/3 of the scenarios so far, but I would love a proper 2021 version with fully up to date visuals.

I find it kind of therapeutic playing this and it is good for escapism, when I am driving a train my problems go away for a while!

This was good 10 years ago but in 2021 and beyond it just can't old any water compared to say Train Sim World 2 or something more modern. The game engine is old and clunky. The DLC is to many and to boring compared to later titles. It has trouble with some modern controls and configurations. Long story short its at the end of its life cycle.

Such a money milk.
While the graphics are good, you get three routes/ trains to start with,
asking to buy 20+ dollar DLC Packages just for one route or train.
The only plus that makes it even worth it for rail fans (Which I am not) is the fact they give you a free upgrade to the next years version of the game.
The base game is disappointing, and if you're not willing to shill out hundreds of dollars to even have more than 30 hours of gameplay max, then I would say DO NOT pick this game up.

Can not recommend this game at all. I have a high end machine with a RTX 3080 graphics card, With MSFS 2020 on Ultra setting at 1440p runs smoothly between 60-80 fps. TS 2021 runs at 40 fps if I'am lucky, Every time new scenery loads frame drop to about 12 fps Stutters so often is unplayable. Tried all the setting from lowest to highest with the same result. I also tried tweeking my hardware, no difference. For a simulator that is still using a direct x version from 10 years ago and is just re-badged every year is in my mind not worth the high priced asked.

I received this game for $12 as part of a humble bundle deal. This came with several maps and a number of trains, the majority of which I was not actually able to play as they may only be operated on specific maps that were not included in the bundle. I got the set for next to nothing however so I figured it to not be a big deal, 3 maps and a few trains for each is plenty to have fun with.

Playing the Kiel-Lubeck route, one notices that the speed limits on the simplified GUI bear no resemblance to the actual speed limits which makes the route unplayable without taking at least an hour to learn the intricacies of the German rail signaling system, and this seems to be the case for any of the German routes currently, with no intentions to fix it.

Finally there are an enormous number of blatant oversights in the game design. You can't change any sound settings from in game without going back to the main menu. Opening the editor on a official map and editing anything is permanent more or less. If you delete a building (such as the Kiel Hbf for example) while messing around, and try to close out of it, one only has the option to save the changes made. Upon starting an official mission on the affected map you will find that any changes you made (that can't be undone as far as I'm aware) are permanent unless you go through the bother of manually reinstalling that DLC.

This game has some promise, but is an absolute money pit (it's absurd to charge easily $20-30 for a single train and $30-50 for a single map) and was designed by a team with as much common sense as a bag of rocks. To omit the most basic of features like a sound slider in the in-game options is excusable for a 1 man company, not a 150+ man one. Don't go anywhere near this unless you're an absolute rail acolyte with no shortage of money (in which case buy by *other means*, don't give any money to these clowns), or get it from something like humble bundle and give the money to a good cause. Broken POS 1/2 the time, 4/10.

Good game BUT here are a few things to remember:

Only buy dlc when it's on sale
You'll get quite a bit of fps drops even if you're rocking the latest 30 series cards
It's better to install this on an SSD to avoid long loading times (unless you plan to get a lot of DLC and your SSD doesn't have a lot of storage)
**YOU CAN GET TS FOR 80P ATM ON HUMBLE BUNDLES SO HOPEFULLY I'VE ALREADY SAVED YOU SOME BUCKS**

If you are a new to these types of games and don't have 100 hours just to learn the bare minimum to play the game, don't buy it, it's garbage town. Nothing is obvious, the keybinds are trash and impossible to change...

About performance, it's once again garbage town, I have a 1600x and a 1080 and took a lot of optimization to get 30 fps... even thought most of time it dips to 5 fps. Seems to me that this game just wants one fast core. If you don't have a insane cpu, this is going to be an awful experience.

There is still DLC's coming out and money being made, but the performance is still trash.

Don't buy this game

What to say about Train Sim, I wish there was a maybe button. I'll start with a bit of background. I've had this game for a very very long time, it was the reason I got steam in the first place. I bought a disc for Railworks 3, Train Sim 2011, due to my own interest in the route construction and my own overall interest anyway. At the time, the game looked good, it ran on my old desktop at the time fairly well and I enjoyed just roaming and having fun. Over time, the game updated and got a fresh lick of paint every year from Dovetail. This game hasn't changed since 2009, small engine tweaks don't count.

Pros

If you do enjoy route variety, then TS as a series will probably be a good choice for you.
3rd party software from companies like Armstrong Powerhouse is top notch and getting to the peak of this poor old engine's capabilities, but they have brilliant functionality.
The community around this 12 year old game is still great and supportive, really great people.

Cons

Updates do little more than add to the every growing DLC list to fill Dovetail's pockets and change the number on the title screen.
This engine is far too old now to get anything worthwhile for any new players, it had its run back in the early 2010's where I played it most.
There are alternatives with far more features, Dovetail's own TrainSimWorld for detail, Run8 for multiplayer while holding graphics similar to this, or if you are like me and enjoy building, Garry's Mod has some amazing communities like FC&N.

I love this game I really do, I probably have more hours than stated, offline play etc. If you really want to experience a classic train sim, then go for it, but I think it's finally time for this game to really rest, there are others, do your research.

Remember, this is no negative, but a mixed.

You need to put a lot of time and money into this game for it to become enjoyable.

Train simulator 2021 looks exactly the same as it did in 2009, nothing has changed. You cant even change the keyboard/controller layout which was something I thought every game has now.

The game frequently crashes for me even though I am above the recommended requirements.

For the game play itself, I would've thought there would be a timetable mode, like in Train Sim World, but only quick drive (A-B) or scenarios.

Half the buttons don't even work in the trains (even the door controls) and the train instruments and buttons are just very blurry pictures slapped onto the basic model of the train, the devs haven't slightly bothered to model the cab.

This game certainly isn't worth £25 and we need to stop giving Dovetail Games our money until they make this game with 2021 standards, not 2009.

Train Simulator has potential, it does a really good job of simulating the railway at its core, but unfortunately the developers did a half hearted job and ask for £10,000 worth of DLCs.

Really good for casual and rail nerds, but for me, looking for realism players and rail workers, not to be recommended. To be professional for locomotive pilots through the simulator? It is not not helpful.
Summary: this game is a simulator, but is not a simulator.

1. Relays and switches are limited.
EMU's example, high voltage's switch: VCB is not funtional.

2. TGIS: Train General Information System, displaying is not functioning.

3. EMU starting sequence is not available. other locomotives are the same problem.
Depends on train's manual, I know one of the EMU's initiating sequence. This is why I said this game is very casual.

Master key is set position > Checking voltage of batteries(maybe DC 100V) > Checking displaying TGIS: Train General Information System > pushing ACM(Auxiliary Air Compressor) and checking pressures of ACM > Checking all kinds of relays > Input VCB: Vaccum Circuit Breaker > Checking breaking system > Checking notch(driving throttle) > Checking security systems(Security Break, Emergency Break)......

4. Developers should consider making various scenarios.
There are many situations to be happen - external and internal matters. Too moderate.

If its on sale it might be worth a buy if you like trains. but many of the missions have sudden speed reductions without a warning and you will lose points real fast but luckily the points wont matter that much unless you MUST get gold stars on every mission for some reason.. to me its not a deal breaker because i got this on sale and those points wont matter to me much but of course it would be better if it was fixed.

DISCLAIMER: Train Simulator 2021 is NOT a new product, it's just a somewhat updated version of a much older train simulator. If you want something new you should look elsewhere.

TL;DR Don't get this train simulator unless you are really desperate.

Pros:

As it is an older title there is a lot of content developed for it, most of it are overpriced DLCs however and not worth your money. I recommend that if you really want to play this particular simulator that you wait for sale and read the reviews because a lot of the add-ons aren't even that great.

Cons:
- Graphics are pretty lackluster, it certainly does not look like a game from 2021 and that's because it isn't. This game is old and it shows.

- Performance: Now I could potentially forgive the outdated graphics if the simulator had awesome performance. However, this simulator runs like garbage. The framerate is all over the place, going from 10-15 to sometimes 60fps on all the routes and trains I have tested so far. It's kinda ridiculous how little optimisation has been implemented in a simulator that gets a new shiny badge every single year to advertise it as a new product.
- Bugs/Crashes: You would think that they had managed to get rid of these by now but sadly there are still bugs and crashes around to this day.

Overall I would not recommend this outdated game to anyone.

I like it, do I care if others like it or prefer other Train Sims over this one? Nope.

I think TS20xx is the best fit for my needs, not much else I can say.

Try it you may like it too, if not there's always the refund system.

If you prefer car racing games or first person shooters then this probably isn't for you, if you like trains then yeah, you'll probably enjoy it.

When i was a kid i thought that this game was like Euro Truck Simulator where you deliver cargo and get some payout or something but nahh.. you just sit there on your train and you obey all the rules.. that's it

Before you spend your money on the base game:
Every year this game got an update and all they did was just change the title..
to put it simply.. 1 base game + 3 trains with some scenario, every year the train bundle is different.
if the game got an update, you won't get the new trains.. you just stuck with your *insert the number* edition bundle

to put it simply if you want to get the new trains you gotta buy the DLC

If you're interested in trains and just want some software to help you chill, then I can't recommend this enough.
I've spent hundreds of hours and hundreds of pounds on this title...it can get expensive when you start adding trains and routes.
But for price Vs hours of enjoyment, I utterly love it.
Stressful day? Just climb aboard a loco and do some driving...it's more involved than you think, yet still so calming.

I have go to be honest this game is a scam. When you first load in you realise you get a few base trains and you have to pay for the rest. This was just extreamly disapointing and i feel Dovetail need to be less greedy and try to impress people who buy the game and not irratate then.

I have been a TS user for many years (back when it was a Microsoft product). I agree with other reviews that this appears to be a money making operation and not much more . I recently bought the new MSFS 2020 product - using FS products for many years too. While I would never expect to make a direct comparison between the 2 products, TS is pretty bad when you play them back to back. Maybe the dev's should spend some time updating the graphics vs trying to develop more DLC. Bring TS into the 20's instead of just relabeling the product and developing more DLC.

Train Simulator 20XX is not easy to use, and it looks like it was made in the 2000s by enthusiastic amateurs (“by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts….”) - because that is exactly what it is. It often presents itself in a broken or wildly unstable state (it usually gets patched every year - some of these patches fix issues, sometimes they create new problems).

The paid-for route DLC that forms the core of the simulator experience is absurdly expensive when released, and only approaches broadly reasonable levels of value when it is reduced in a sale by at least 70%, a few months or years later.

New DLC releases marked at full price should be avoided - not just because of the ridiculous pricing at launch, but because the DLCs will usually be launched in a broken or incomplete state (check WCML South, for example). These do not get fixed until after the full-price-paying first adopters have explained their dissatisfaction and reported the bugs, and even then the DLC might not get completely fixed.

BUT....... Train Simulator is worth a look if you have the time and patience to deal with the software’s shortcomings, and if you can buy it at the right price. You will encounter genuine flashes of simulation genius if you put in enough hours and if you have enough imagination to tolerate previous generation graphics. Some of the creations (train models) are truly stunning inside and out, and the driving experience can become deeply immersive, and often such good fun that you might think that you are actually playing a game.....!. You will, at times, have to spend a lot of time researching how a locomotive works before you can begin to use the simulated train. Train Simulator is a potentially brilliant self-educational tool, if you are prepared to put the work in. The Train Simulator software will not help you with your journey of discovery, so you have to be a time-rich and resourceful self-starter to understand the software, but the train sim community is superbly friendly and is always eager to help.

To summarise - Train Simulator 20XX is a bit of a dog. It is an old, broken, unreliable, demanding, unhealthily expensive, severely distressed and unpredictable dog that will bite you every day until you have developed a truce with it, and even then it will bite you again and again when you least expect it. If you buy the DLC it will become a money-pit, and it will destroy your carpets and furniture (metaphorically speaking, with respect to the carpets and furniture).

You have to give Train Simulator a lot of love and attention, over an extended period of time, before you can have any really good times. But once you have tamed the decaying ill-tempered savage old beast, there are plenty of wonderfully enjoyable walks ahead, until those tired limbs collapse (yours, or the dog's), or until you see a more promising puppy in the window.

The Metropolitan Line addon is a disgrace! It does not run. It has never run, and it is unlikely to run as Dove Tail Games have said they don’t plan on doing anything about it! I requested a refund and was told “No”, because I have played the addon for too many hours - IT WON’T RUN!!! How can I possibly have played it???

Come on Steam/DTG: I have paid for a product which does not work and you won't even refund the money I have wasted on a completely useless product. In the UK we call that a SCAM!

Game is very buggy. Sometimes I get docked for speeding before entering a slow zone or after fully exiting a slower zone. The limit shown under the speed will read, say, 100, I'll be going 85 and getting docked for speeding. Custom consists don't work at all without breaking the game upon load. Once had the train literally fly off the track out of nowhere (going under the speed limit on a straight section), losing about an hour of progress since I wasn't saving regularly (because why should I need to?). Also, on the SD40, the horn is barely audible and sounds like it's in the distance when I'm in the cab. These are only what I've found thus far. Considering I paid full price for this game I would expect a much, much better product. Very disappointed.

This game is boring. You would have to be hyper-enthusiastic about trains to enjoy a real-time train driving game, and this isn't even the best one.
This game also somehow manages to cause framerate stutters on my modern 2020 gaming pc, and I can't even run the 32-bit mode.
They re-title it every year, but it is the same game, down to the place in my library.
I got this game (boxed with a DVD) as a gift after I recommended a friend Euro Truck Simulator back in 2012.
I legitimately enjoyed Euro Truck, but this is a hot mess and I cannot believe that this game is still being sold.

In some respects it is a great game to enjoy, but then...

1. The add-ons are too costly for what they are. Maybe worth 5 or 10 EUR max.
2. These add-ons... yeah, they are expensinve as I said before, but even then I would have hoped that they are at least clean of bugs. Well, they arent. I have one train where I have to push a button to confirm sth. If I dont do this, I cant continue and there is no way to get around this. That is surely not realistic, is it?
3. I have this game since 2012 or so. And since then, nothing has changed in terms of graphics. Neither computer, the one in 2012 or 2020 is able to show the graphics without stuttering.

Thats why it gets a clear no.

Cheers,
Marc

As someone who wasn't a train fanatic before playing this game, I suddenly have a new adoration for the concept of conducting big choo-choos. TS2020 is gentle, and there's not too much to focus on at once, which surprisingly pleased me -- someone who was looking for realism and immersion. When driving your train, you feel like you’re coasting down the European countryside and nothing in your life matters except you, your train, and the lights of the quiet towns you cruise through. I played this game many a stormy night in a large hoodie, with a cat-mug full of chamomile tea not too far away. It was cozy to picture myself as a conductor breathing in the sweet, clean air of the sparsely populated, fallen-leaf clad towns, and humming along to the chugga-chugga of my train.

TLDR; It's comfy as heck. 10/10 for Train Simulator 2020.

I bought this after having had Train Sim World for my XBOX One for a year or so, as I found I enjoyed the simulators more about actually driving locomotives/units than just playing about with railways (Trainz).

I chose to get this one as it has more rolling stock and routes - including my local - and I can safely say, whilst not as visually appealing (one could say) as TSW the variety of routes and stock, as well as the fact that there is more you can do with them all, makes this a great choice to have gotten :)

If you're into trains then this is a must buy, especially in a sale. You can drive trains all across the world from good old blighty of course, right across Europe, the USA and even China and S. Africa. Diesel, electric and steam. Allegedly some scenarios are bugged but so far i haven't encountered these, or perhaps just not noticed them. My impressions are generally good overall. It's a good simulation of train driving with the choice of going expert mode if you wish, or easier mode for less concentration - watch your speed! Or you can put the camera outside and run it like a virtual train set, the choice is yours. If you can drive these beasts in expert mode then you could probably drive the real thing.
It looks good graphically. Their newer game TSW is the best graphically but this game has far more dlc available, so if you don't want to empty your wallet go for TSW! You can build your own scenarios in this game and there are plenty to download on workshop, providing you have the right dlc of course.
Don't even think about buying all the dlc as it will likely bankrupt you, pick out the routes you like best and go for those. Personally I buy the dlc that is reduced the most in a sale!

I'm a huge fan of Train simulators. Was there for that first simulator published by Microsoft; I was there when the original Trainz rolled up. A couple of really good starts, but it doesn't seem like things advanced much from those days. For a game with 2020 in the title, it feels ten years old.

It’s just an ugly, outdated, clunky experience. Most of the content is locked behind expensive DLC. Nothing in the base game makes me feel any of the DLC would be worth the price, because if it is graphically on par with what’s in the base game, then it’s at least a few generations old. I’m talking the xbox 360 had better quality graphics than this thing. It’s almost insulting with how bad it is, considering they’re slapping a 2020 tag on this.

I spent a little time in the editor, trying to build a layout. It’s really bad. The whole UI design and the experience of trying to use it, is not enjoyable. Navigating around feels clunky and awkward. You don’t really get a preview of the assets to be placed, just the names, so you don’t even really know what you’re looking at. I couldn’t get any sort of main menu to come up, and I’m not sure what was up with that. I had to alt-tab to windows and force quit it, to get out of the editor. I’m sure that’s not normal, but it does help illustrator the issues with the UI and usability. A number of the items I looked at in the editor looked like they did when those original games were released.

The game as a whole feels like the developers were trying to Weekend at Bernie’s it with the corpse of those original game sims. This game isn’t alive. It’s not 2020. It’s a dead corpse that they’re trying to paint up as if it’s still something.

I’ve been playing a little VR train sim called Derail Valley. Graphically, it isn’t that great, but where it lacks in the pretty pixels, it makes up for it with a solid and simple gaming experience. It really highlights to me how bad this simulator is, because this game attempts to pack in so much more, but at the end of the day it’s just not fun. It’s not an easy game to engage and get into. I can recognize the depth it might give to some hardcore train fans, but it shouldn’t be a chore to get there. I feel that the people that give a game like this a positive review, are just starved for something better. I guess when all you’ve got is a dirty glass of water, and a glass of human excrement, that dirty glass of water starts to look pretty nice.

Train simulators are a bit of a niche product, but they don’t have to be this bad and clunky. There’s plenty of fun niche games that work exceptionally well, and as Derail Valley shows, even a train simulator can be enjoyable, as niche as it might be.

The legacy of where this game came from was a great one, but nothing about it has advanced into the modern age.

(It says product refunded because i bought it and then it went on sale so i re-bought it)

TL;DR: You want graphics? Buy TSW. You want a good, established simulator that can do just about anything else? Buy this.

There's this, and it's only competitor train sim world, and I'm torn. Both are great, but at different things. TSW has unbelievable graphics whereas Railworks (Train Simulator) has more content and better content. And when I say more content, I mean MORE CONTENT. TSW has probably around 10 or so addons, whereas this has over 500. I'm a guy who loves Northeast Corridor stuff, so I like Amtrak, NJ Transit, and Metro North mainly. TSW has just one of those, and it's just one line (actually not even the full line). Train Simulator has many options, which can get confusing but I like how there are different Metro North Locos, and how there's tons of different routes to choose from, which, for example New Haven-New York Line, will include NJ Transit, Metro North, and Amtrak tracks and locos.

Foreword I have no choice. TSW is even worse so if i want any train game, this is it.

This is an 11 year old game. The engine is about as efficient as an emaciated gerbil trying to pull the titanic into drydock. It runs like absolute garbage, choking any system you throw at it. You have various options for AA; FXAA FXAA MSAA FXAA SSXA to round the list about 10 deep. problem is, none of it really works worth a damn. The highest setting somewhat tames the game artifacts down, but at the cost of burning up a supercomputer in the process. So you have to scale it down and just live with it.

Graphics artifacts are galore. Flickering textures, fuzzies, shimmering, pulsating objects are the norm. They typically change with the position of the sun so it goes from epilepsy inducing madness to just annoying madness.

The bloom is completely broken, requiring another program to buy to tame it down. whatever, just another 25$ into the pot!

The scenery rendering is what really murders this graphically. Anything further than say 300 meters becomes 1 huge single poly blob. Mountains are just blurs with color swirl. Awesome!

Map errors are constant. Random vegetation on the tracks is normal, confused switches, wrong singnals, indusi/aws systems that do their own.... and that's with the good DLCs mind you.

Train systems are basically non existent. Few 3rd party locos have some working screen buttons that show some info but most of it is just a blank textures starring you in the face screaming YOU WISH YOU COULD PRESS ME DONT YOU!!! Between engine limitations to code and laziness of developers, you get no systems at all! And what you get, acts as realistic as carmageddon's physics.

Onto the actual physics.. oof. Bad. Very bad. No track joins, no track vibration except for the random slamming into some select curves (i consider it a bug as you have to overspeed to trigger it), there is nothing. The tracks are lazer etched and the rolling stock follows it with equal precision. There is no suspension at all. 0.

Sounds are bad. Worse inside than outside.. Complete lack of immersion. Most is just random terrible loops that stutter or have unwanted noise in them. Again terrible from the inside, a little less so from the outside.

The routes are short. Somebody said the absolute maximum hard limit is 400km, but that doesn't factor in complexity. In reality, you are looking at 120km sections AT MOST. Annoying because all the content is just little snipplets from here to there. Nothing is actually complete... Thats due to the editor being absolute horror to work with and the game engine just not liking complexity and size in general.

Nothing is done to this game.. nothing is fixed. Each year it is rebranded as a new date and up it goes again. After all, if the name suddenly changed to train simulator 2009, would you buy it in 2020? Doubt it.

I do find most of the tracks I've purchased are somewhat short, which makes them a bit expensive in my opinion. Personally I'd like to see longer running times and longer stretches of track to make it more value for money. I don't know of any other game where you're paying virtually the price of another game for what is on average a couple of hours game play with each purchase.
That said, if trains are your thing, it's very enjoyable if a little clunky at times. I have a pretty decent setup and it still flickers and judders at times. but not too much to ruin it.

My biggest issue by far is if something does go wrong, you're very reliant on the forum to sort it out (they're a very helpful bunch) as the company is very slow to respond to issues and not greatly helpful especially as you're likely to spending quite a bit of money on this in the long term. That and finding instructions is quite difficult and they're not very in depth when you do.

This game is fine until you write your own scenarios in the workshop in which it becomes absolute garbage, heavily do to running garbage legacy code that's borderline broken. The 64 bit is even worse, based in part that its a fake x64 exe.

Thanks for the wasted time I spent developing routes only to have them rendered unplayable due to TS1 failing to take advantage of multicore processors.

F*CK THIS GARBAGE GAME, if you actually want to create and play OpenRails instead.

Listen, I love this game. I've had for as long as I've been playing video games and it has a special place in my heart. But don't but it. This game has been nickel and diming its way for about 5 years now. I know the DLC price has become a meme around video game circles but it is a blight to anyone who plays this game. Oh whats that, you want to play on this route, well you better be willing to pay $40 BLOODY DOLLARS to play a map, that at best, has one or two issues in its route layout or scenarios. At worst, you will get a terrible route that is rivaled by the spin-offs of roblox or the old routes of TRAINZ 2006. That isnt even getting into all of the other knick knacks that you need to buy to get the full experience of a map. You will get stuck in an endless loop of buying a route, not having everything you need, paying up to $100 for everything only for the whole experience to be a buggy mess. This game desperately needs a new engine. If it isnt crashing the second I close the tab or try to get onto another bloody mission, the game chugs like the steam locomotives they sell for $20 a pop. Thats not even getting into the missions that dont work. I imagine the same people who play test these routes and give it the go ahead are the same people who kept shooting eachother in TF2's MVM play testing. If you have the money and willingness to pay hundreds of dollars in this game, go right ahead. I wont stop you. But if your strapped for cash, DONT BUY THIS GAME. I recommend the Trainz series. Specifically the older games. At least with those games they dont try to sell you something every five minutes.

First, the graphics aren't crazy. Second, why should we pay for literally everything? Each train, each route isn't free. Why??? You are worse than E.A... That's stealing. And shameful too. Definitly not worth buying. DON'T buy it

I am caught between the devil and the deep blue sea on Train Simulator 2020 having pondered over whether I should recommend this game or not! If there was the option to remain neutral, I would opt for that rating but as there isn't I will choose a 52% recommendation. Here is my reasoning:

Positive aspects:

1. It's fun and there are enough trains/routes on the basic game to keep you going for a few hours (or more).

2. Scenarios are often enjoyable and you'll quickly see that driving a train is more involved than just going forward.

3. The academy guides you through the train operartion, signalling, coupling and other basics you'll need to understand before completing a scenario with full points and no penalties.

4. Passenger trains and cargo trains are included yet each requires a different appoach when driving.

5. You can drive, steam, diesel and electric trains covering different periods of time, routes and within many countries.

6. There is also the option to simply do 'Rail Fan' mode where you can observe trains passing and take pictures/screen shots, for those that enjoy that part more. Not my cup of tea though.

Negative aspects:

1. Some of the official scenarios that come with the game are bugged where you'll be penalised for speeding when even though the current line shows a higher speed. ie: on one scenario it showed a 50 speed limit but going over 30 got you penalised.

2. Occasionally you'll get an annoying siren in your cab that can't be disabled unless you save the scenario, close it down then select resume to clear it.

3. There is an insane amout of DLC's for this game which will set you back over £6500 if you wanted them all. Many simply are overpriced for what they offer imo.

4. The steam workshop offers a lot of extra content but be aware most will require certain purchased DLC which adds to your costs too.

It's you choice, like it or leave it. It would be good if the developers sorted out some of the issues and stopped focussing on releasing more expensive DLC just to line their pockets. As for better train simulators, I can't say as this is the only one I have played so far.

I would advise to only buy it on sale and wait for deals on any DLC to expand the game.

Look, we all know the DLC is a meme. It makes more sense once you actually play, going off the fact that you're only supposed to own what you're interested in. Still sorta ridiculous but makes more sense. The game presentation and DLC being how it is isn't friendly to people looking for just a taste of what this is. So, I present a solution for all of those curious heads; there's a Humble Bundle until the 24th that includes the base game and 16 DLCs for 12 dollars. Go nuts if you really wanna find out if this game is for you. Contemplating taking a financial plunge I wasn't sure I'd actually enjoy for the price and DLCs is what deterred me all these years but it's a very fine simulator and is exactly as advertised.

I really wanted this game to be better but its a lot of glitches. I just ran into a game breaking one were i was doing the scenario race day run and on the return trip i had yellow signals and it was a train in front of me sitting at the station. Couldnt progress further as it would result in me failing. There are lighting issues , clipping issues and texture issues. I give up.
