Über das Spiel
While investigating the disappearance of twin girls at Winterlake - something terrible happens to Caroline Walker. Waking in the dead of night, naked in a bathtub - and hooked up to some decrepit medical equipment, Caroline must fight for her life as she explores the halls of an abandoned Mansion turned hospital.
A Nod to the Classics
Tormented Souls deliberately sets out to draw inspiration from classic survival horror. From Resident Evil and Silent Hill, to Alone in the Dark - Tormented Souls is a modern take on the fixed-perspective adventure, offering a modernised control scheme and a more dynamic camera, while retaining everything that made those games so beloved by fans.
Keep Your Wits About You
You'll need much more than a steady aim and sharp reflexes to make it out alive. Search the environment for anything you can use to your advantage. Cleverly combine items to solve puzzles and use every resource available to explore the secrets of the Mansion and its grounds.
Another Dimension
Nothing is quite as it seems at Winterlake. Mirrors provide a path to an alternate reality and another place in time. By crossing these shimmering gateways, Caroline can manipulate the very fabric of reality in surprising ways - turning the situation to her advantage.
You Are Not Alone in the Dark
The mansion may seem abandoned, but as Caroline investigates its secrets, dark forces and unspeakable horrors will do everything in their power to stop her getting to the truth. Be sure to be alert at all times, and use anything you can find to fight off the encroaching terrors of Winterlake.

I highly recommend this game.
the history is a bit weird but alright.
unfortunatelly there is no difficulty options, so for new people in survival horrors games is this maybe a bit to hard.
some places are really scary especially the end and very exciting.
some puzzles are really hard to solve.
you have to think what you have to do or what can you do than next, all the time.
some good jumscares moments.
I found almost every room are beautiful made.
the game is exciting from the beginning to the end.
there are some endings.
some cool clothes to choose.
the mechanic and movement is alright.
music and sound are very good.
options menu is good.
graphic is amazing.
price is alright.
all achievements work.

Die musikalische Untermalung finde ich spitze. Erinnert sehr stark an Resident Evil. Man hört also die obligatorische Speicherraummusik!

+ Lvl Design (Teilweise zwar viel Lauferei allerdings alles gut platziert)
+ Waifu Main Char Kappa
Cons
Mindestens 9/10
Liebe für das Game <3

Very good survival horror game in style of the old Resident Evil and Silent Hill, with all it's good and bad. The puzzles are generally fun and doable when you use your brain, the enemys are good but lack a litte bit of variety, the graphics are decent with nice lightning effects and the soundtrack is actually fantastic.

Tormented Souls
https://youtu.be/__03qKO5MJk

Its weird to compare it to another horror game that I hate but it really feels like a better version of another game called Fear Unknown. Everything that Fear Unknown does wrong this game does right. They both feel about on the same level of production but Fear just completely misses the mark while this one hits it dead center. Go for it. Play it.

Aside from that quirk, I really enjoyed the game and this is highly recommended to fans of oldschool survival horror game. The puzzles here are among the hardest I've seen in the genre.

I had my concerns before, as I didn’t have a good time with Resident Evil (2002), which is one of the paragons this game follows. The developer seemed to understand some issues of that game and addressed them to some degree.
- Camera angles are much more consistent to reduce disorientation due to frequent camera angle shifting.
- Map interconnectivity is appropriate and environments have low similarity and are more distinguishable (excluding sewer and bunker), saving lots of troubles in traversing, backtracking and locating.
- Items and NPC give guidance so that you always have an idea on what to do next.
I do think Tormented Souls should implement autosave, but the well-placed save rooms mitigate this issue a lot as long as you play carefully.
This game stands out for several reasons.
- With its detailed pre-render backgrounds, superb light and darkness effects, excellent sound and music design, the game successfully created this utterly ominous and unsettling atmosphere. The atmosphere really grasps how psychological horror should work and has a few truly horrifying jump scares as additions. It is one of the best games I have ever seen in terms of atmosphere.
- Additionally, you can’t attack in the dark, which is such a genius mechanic that contributes a great deal of tension to the atmosphere and combat.
- As mentioned, this game is how the map interconnectivity did right. It provides lots of fun and a fair amount of challenges from exploration, while doesn’t make it too hard to find your way.
- The game drops inventory management from Resident Evil with infinite inventory space, but keeps its essence - resource scarcity. The locations and the number of resources are well calculated to be aligned with enemy layout and consumption. Therefore, the game gives you an option to not play pacifist to save resources, which I appreciate a lot. You can in fact eliminate every enemy (I did), as long as you don’t waste ammo unnecessarily and use crowbar wisely. However, the game always keeps you on your toe by constantly putting you on the verge of running out, which is the kind of tension needed for a good survival horror.
I am sure some people will argue the puzzles is one of the best things about this game, but in my book, the puzzle design is very problematic and is the biggest failure of this game. Not that they are not creative or anything, they are just too hard to be fun.
- Hints are way too hidden – they are hidden in places you hardly notice. For example,
I don’t think anyone will naturally realize a person dancing around a corpse is the game hinting the puzzle solution, or John Gibson’s work is a nameless statue you encounter.
- Hints are way too obscure, requiring a gigantic step forward in thinking to relate to answers. Such as,
you need to associate the alien icon with the shape of star; you need to realize the yin yang symbol actually hints number 2; you need to figure out how a seemingly random set of lines and dots mean numbers.
They all make logical sense and I appreciate the creativity, but they are too surreal for puzzle design.
- It is also a matter of finding the method for the puzzles, because solutions can be from exploring (the surroundings), reading (obtain files), literal interpretation (for riddles), logic association or observation. This actually plays a more significant role than you realize in getting you to stumble, as most puzzles are so counterintuitive that you will have no idea how to solve them.
- Some puzzles are too gimmicky for their own good. For example,
I don’t understand why flipping a writing-protective lock in a floppy disk (as a zoomer I never used one) is a part of the puzzle. Same go for flipping the lid of an oil can and figuring out the number “8” is in fact the symbol “∞” lying down, etc.
They feel so petty, deliberate and desperate trying to make things harder, whereas these designs are completely unnecessary because these puzzles are much more natural and fluid without them.
I enjoy challenging puzzles and I don’t like the fact that puzzles in recent Resident Evil are for babies. Yet, there is a reason why they were made that way, which I call “accessibility”, meaning everyone can enjoy the game no matter how good or bad they are with puzzles. For Tormented Souls, however, the puzzle difficulty really goes overboard and breaks the principle of “accessibility”. If you are not one of those people with 200 IQ, you will get stuck a lot with puzzles. Consequently, it breaks the flow of the game and brings lots of confusion and frustration to the experience. From the business perspective, a game can never be mainstream if it only caters to puzzle fanatics with high IQ. From the design perspective, it is not a good puzzle if players cannot solve it by themselves. And trust me on this, most people will need guide for puzzles a lot. Overall, if only considering puzzles, this game deserves a negative rating because the developer obviously had zero consideration of the majority of players when designing puzzles.
Besides the puzzle design, there are other but unimportant downsides.
- This game has an occult story like Silent Hill, but it is barely serviceable because literally one minute into the game you can already guess the full picture. It also leaves lots of things unexplained.
- The voice acting is not good. Audios are missing in several dialogues.
- Character and monster models look rough and the motions are not animated well.
- The combat can use some improvements on the visibility of projectile and the accuracy of auto-aim.
- Many used items won’t be automatically discarded (or somehow you can still pick them up), adding unnecessary confusion.
- I encountered a few glitches in-game and in the menu and also noticed inaccuracy and error in translation.
- I get that the developer went for a PS2 era vibe for the aesthetic, but some visual elements are not aligned with it, particularly the cursor (and it sometimes blocks vision on small objects).
- It is a hassle that you can’t pull out references when doing puzzles. Given the complexity and the number of puzzles, it is a very needed feature.
- I don’t expect stellar control on a game with tank control (best on controller FYI). Still, a quick turn button should be added, and the old-school direction control on D-pad that ten people will use should be replaced with quick slots. They will make significant enhancements to the combat and the flow of the game.
- I don’t understand what is different between green and red areas. Ideally, the map should highlight unsearched, searching and searched areas with different colors to show your progression, just like recent Resident Evil. To make matter worse, the game somehow doesn’t have maps for the mausoleum, sewer and bunker, which are the most confusing areas in the game.
Many of these issues are negligible to the overall experience and should be overlooked since it is an indie game developed under lots of constraints. I do think with what the game achieved, it is close to perfection, if only puzzle difficulty was turned down a couple of notches. But even so, I highly recommend checking it out if you are a fan of survival horror.

Graphics-wise, you’re not going to get closer to Resident Evil Remake than this. Although not quite as sublime as the pre-rendered backgrounds of its inspiration, the mansion design is fairly atmospheric, and at times downright gorgeous. Navigating through the maze-like corridors can be a challenge, but is rewarding, especially once you have a solid grasp of the layout. Then there are the puzzles, most of which are really creative. It’s rare that a game hits the right balance between enigmatic and logical, but Tormented Souls does just that. None of the solutions are too obvious, but they’re not overly obtuse either; they’re just clever enough that when I had my “voila” moments, I actually felt like I achieved something. Even the riddles are smartly written but not overly cryptic. I just wish the rest of the game made as much sense as the puzzles.
The story is…not good. The mansion’s setting is interesting, but the plot makes little and less sense. I suspect you need to get all of the endings to uncover the answers to the many unanswered questions, but unfortunately, I’m not interested enough to play through it again to fill in those gaps. It doesn’t help that the antagonist’s motivation is both cliché and nonsensical, and the big plot twist was obvious from a mile away. At least the writing in the notes is REALLY good, especially for text translated from Spanish. Whoever localized the diary entries did a fantastic job; if it weren’t for those, I’m fairly certain I’d have dropped the game halfway through.
I might have been more willing to overlook the deficiencies in the story if the monsters were scarier and the horror felt more visceral, but I feel like I’ve seen similar creature designs in several different horror games over the years. Bodies that have been mutilated and experimented upon just don’t do it for me anymore, even if they are a threat, which these guys definitely aren’t. When I wasn’t easily skirting around them, I was jumping in and out of rooms to reset their placement, making avoiding them even easier. Heck, the most deadly monster in the entire game can be almost completely avoided by simply resetting the room since it’s a random spawn. About the only challenging encounter was the final boss fight, and that’s because the trial and error it requires to figure out is more frustrating than difficult. But once you know what to do, the rest is gravy.
Honestly, I consider Tormented Souls to be more of a puzzle game than a survival horror. The excitement I felt from figuring things out far outweighed the miniscule amounts of fear I experienced from the atmosphere and monster encounters. Still, it’s worth a playthrough if you’re a horror buff looking for something entertaining enough. As for this fledgling indie studio, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on them. With a little more experience, and a bit more creativity, I'm certain their future endeavors will prove to be much more promising.

The demo is an altered version of the first section and does a good job at showing you what the game has in store.
Support indie devs who put out a quality product that also isn't unoriginal shovelware.
