Before you start playing the game, you can decide between three major classes (destroyer, vanquisher and alchemist). You can also choose a pet, with as company.
The graphic is quite nice, a bit comic-like as you know from WarCraft III. The gameplay has some nice little details, which players might have missed in Dibalo, for example you can send your pet back to the village in order to sell all unnessary items, while you continue fighting.
Weaknesses: Apart from the already mentioned simple story, there is no good transparency when you stand behind or before walls, which sometimes makes it difficult to play. Moreover, the endboss has one-million hitpoints, which takes at least 10 minutes simply hitting them down, which is very frustrating.
All in all, the game offers you around 25 hours of simple hunt and collect-entertainment.

It was really easy on normal... Until you reach the end boss. The end boss was a little ridiculous IMO.
Tip for end boss:
If you dont want to be running in circles for an hour, chipping at his health, just stay on the boss (I lured him to the door, where you spawn) and just respawn when you die (this will probably be at least 50 times). This will take all your hard earned gold, so you should spent it before going into battle. This all sound stupid ridiculous, and I agree, but this was the only way for me personally to beat his ass.
The cartoonish graphic is timeless and the game honestly doesn't look bad for me.
The biggest plus in my opinion is the gameplay and the loot system, very relaxing game, not really focused on the rpg element.

The progression in this game is not great. The game was manageable on hard until the last area of floors, where certain mobs one-shotted me randomly from a distance, even though I was appropriately leveled. The game just became blasting AOE at groups of mobs and making sure to kill this specific mob as soon as possible, so as not to get one-shotted. The final boss was a massive increase in health and took forever to down with the amount of adds that are spawned by the boss.
Since I finished it and it wasn't terrible, I will give it the ol' thumbs up, but I am fairly neutral about the experience. I got about 15 hours out of it, so based on hours it's worth the asking price, but if you factor in the experience, not so much. But on sale for only a few bucks, it's definitely worth it.

Despite this game ripping off aspects from both games, the game is honestly fun as hell.
If you want to play Diablo and don't want to give Blizzard money, get this game.

Good example of Action RPG, great singleplayer experience. Easy to pick and play, you can do anything you feel like (Play the campaign, custom maps, grind or farm, look for items). The graphics in-game and artwork look really nice and give Torchlight his own personality and vibe. Easy to apply MODS and enhance the look and gameplay of the game. TorchEd (game editor) is available too if you want to modify the game, or create new maps, by yourself. The OST was composed by Matt Uelmen, and is really fitting for the world of Torchlight. Personally the OST for the Ruins tileset is something else.

So, I remembered about my old Torchlight games. Man, I know this game from 2011 maybe? It's been a long time. There you have all your pretty balanced difficulties (well, I played on Hard and it was hard), the stats management and the skills tree. You are free to build your character whichever way you like. Unfortunately, I think, you can mess up your character by maximizing soon-to-be-useless skills. Consider this part of the gameplay experience - you might play a game maximizing the wrong stats and then you'll have to replay it. Some might like it, some might not. I did not have to replay the game, but I was struggling on the last levels. Glad I had my minions to back me up. Man those little skeletons can put a lot of damage.
I think after ~10 years in the field this game still holds up.
Well, until you play Torchlight II. Yeah, as some reviewers point it out, I think Torchlight I is obsolete now. It loses on all counts: fewer classes, more boring loot and dungeons, generic enemy design. But only when you compare the two. For me, playing Torchlight I first made playing Torchlight II right after a so great experience I was just blown away by the improvements.
This game still allows for some mind-numbing clicking and loot grinding, but you may lose interest quickly. Pick a difficulty too easy - you'll breeze through the levels without caring about loot which is almost garbage. Pick too difficult - you'll struggle and since there's no good loot -- you'll find that your time is wasted.
Anyway, I enjoyed playing this game as Alchemist on Hard. It was pretty fun until the mid-game, then I just started playing in 30-60 min periods so it does not bore me.
The plot is pretty bland and boring. It's just there - if you're into Torchlight universe and want to explore the first part before playing the second - just go to Wiki and read it there. You'll save yourself some time.
Be careful before you decide to play this game. It's pretty good for the time it came out.
Keep in mind - it's been made on low budget and in short time by very few people. It's like an ARPG-pilot for future greater game. Don't put high expectations on this one and you might enjoy it -- there's a good setting, art and music.

STORY/LORE - 8/10
The story and lore to Torchlight is pretty similar to that of the famous Diablo franchise. Evil lurks under the town you’re in, citizens are worried about weird things happening, and you’re here to save the day. There are some decent characters and NPCs here, especially the heroes/classes you can choose from but there isn’t anything memorable like you’d find in Diablo.
Torchlight came out in 2009 and I remember playing it when it first came out and loved it instantly. It’s basically a cartoon version of Diablo, takes the same dungeon-crawling style of things, and puts its thumbprint on it. Best of all, you get to have a pet dog or cat by your side and get to name it as it helps you fight, store inventory, and even cast spells. Bonus points for that!
GAMEPLAY - 10/10
If you love endless levels in dungeons and enjoy plowing through waves and waves of enemies with bosses sprinkled in, Torchlight is the game for you. It’s a lot of fun as you max out your abilities, get upgraded weapons/armor, and work your way through the various levels and quests. Since there are a lot of different styles of play to use, the replayability is really nice if you want to see what each of the three characters brings to the table.
Torchlight’s gameplay is fluid and doesn’t change the world or anything when it comes to hack and slash games but it’s a fun and immersive experience. This is easily the best feature of the game and again, copies that Diablo formula well as it definitely ranks up there as a beloved franchise that many gamers enjoyed when it first came out.
GRAPHICS - 9/10
Torchlight has cartoony graphics from start to finish and it all looks great. The level design does get a bit repetitive but even those look real nice too, especially the levels with lava. Considering this game came out so long ago, it still holds up to this very day.
SOUNDTRACK - 8/10
Again, Torchlight is a Diablo-clone, even the music in town sounds eerily similar to what it tries to copy. The levels you’ll go through do have their own unique sound to it which helps to mix things up but it’s pretty linear and nothing that truly stands out or is epic. Even when you encounter bosses, the music doesn’t change or anything. Towards the end of finishing up Torchlight, I muted the music since it does get repetitive and put my own music to chill out as I went through all the different levels.
MULTIPLAYER - N/A
There is no multiplayer at all in Torchlight, not even co-op. Since this came out in 2009 as a single-player campaign, it has stayed like that. There is a nice modding community for Torchlight and if you Google it, you’ll see that there are a ton of mods to use to add a bunch of new things to the game.
No multiplayer option mods but at least you can download things like new boss packs, better user interfaces, and I even saw a mod that adds Jedi bosses into the game if you also love Star Wars. Yeah, lots of extra things to go through if mods are your thing to mix things up as you progress.
FINAL SCORE - 8/10
Overall, Torchlight is a very fun game and is one that I hold close to my heart. I remember playing this when it first came out in 2009 and instantly loved it. If you could believe it, my original character was still available to play and it completely shocked me that it was still saved and I was able to pick up and get right back into things.
The different kinds of monsters, bosses, levels, weapons, and armor are all nice and unique. You can enjoy fishing if that’s your thing as well or play around with a very nice and balanced selection of abilities, spells, and fighting styles. If you want to melee, cast, use minions, dual-wield, etc., it’s all here and will give you a great time once you get to it. I would consider Torchlight one of those classic games many gamers remember fondly of. Especially if you love a good old fashioned hack and slash dungeon-crawling adventure that you can sink many hours into and have a blast in.

The game recycles maps consistently. There's no real world to explore. Every map feels like a hallway. Killing monsters is not fun and quite slow. There's no real sense of power. The skills are lackluster and lack significant impact. Attacking feels very slow, even with increased attack and cast speed.
The side quests give no real reward other than sometimes an enhancement. There's no inventory management. Gold is essentially useless.
There's no real story to the game other than an evil guy becomes obsessed with power or something, no idea, the storytelling was abysmal.
The final boss took a lot longer to kill than all the previous bosses. He has a very large health pool which made killing him very arduous. Spamming mobs at the player is not exactly challenging when you can simply run away and corner them. Despite taking a long time to kill, the final boss only dropped 1 rare item. Very unrewarding.
It was very tedious to complete this boring game.

Boring story. Play it on hard mode to have fun.
I’m not the most experienced action RPG player. As far as I know, “Exiled Kingdoms” on mobile and, now, on PC is the only ARPG I’ve played, which I thoroughly enjoyed. After playing this, it made me search for more similar games, and Torchlight was one of the titles I’ve stumbled upon lists of ARPG suggestions.
The gameplay has been often compared to the Diablo series, which I’ve only played once way back in the PS1 days. I barely remember ever descending into the dungeon so I can’t recall the gameplay. So I can’t make the comparison like what many reviewers say.
Torchlight is a straightforward hack-and-slash ARPG. You go into the dungeon, fight your way through a horde of monsters, descend further, and repeat.
Perhaps I need to try more similar games to have better judgment when it comes to this genre. Because I think Torchlight can easily be repetitive. I’ve spent approximately three to four hours on my first run on normal mode. I reached floor 17, if I remember correctly, without ever dying. Then I got bored. I eventually lost interest and didn’t play it for two or three months.
Around February, I decided to give it another shot. I revisited my first character but I couldn’t remember what the story was anymore (I don’t like checking walkthroughs). So I eventually made a new one. But this time, I figured that I should try it on hard mode — to be a little more challenging. It was then that I got more invested and started to enjoy.
But if you want to play it for the story, there’s very little that this can offer. It’s lame and forgettable. So perhaps you can look elsewhere if you’re looking for a narrative-driven title.
Torchlight can be fun and exciting with all the killing of corrupted beasts, ghouls, monsters, and more. So if you’re up for that, then try it out. And if you’ve played other ARPG titles, play it on hard mode. You’ll have more fun.

After waiting for Diablo III back in 2008-2009, I decided to test other A-RPGs like Sacred, Titan Quest and Kult (might review that game later), then I found Torchlight and decided to test it. I don't know how but it brought back memories from when I first played Diablo I. Its a simple game and has endgame mechanics if you wish to expand your gameplay along with several achievements that are quite entretaining for those achievement hunters.
Pros of the game
- 3 Characters with different playstyles
- Easy to understand
- Runs on a potato
- Learning curve is not difficult as other A-RPGs
- You can waste your time with fishing (I like it a lot).
- Each character has a 3 specializations or skill trees.
Cons
- Some players might not like the simplistic gameplay when compared to other A-RPGs (it depends on the player)

Comparisons to Diablo and Titan Quest and the like aren't entirely misplaced, but the scope of Torchlight is considerably lesser (by design) and could cause unmet expectations if that's what you're looking for out of this game. If you want a more involved and complex ARPG, just jump straight into Torchlight II where those comparisons are more appropriate.
Torchlight One is very basic, but gets the fundamentals of clicking on monsters until they die right and there is a lot of loot.

Many will call this a diablo clone and they won't be entirely wrong, it is an isometric ARPG.
However it's more a spiritual successor to F.A.T.E. which was already a fun game.
This is just F.A.T.E. done even better and I enjoy it greatly.

Game mechanics are a bit wonky thanks to questionable design decisions. Such as a cheap enchanter that allows a high amount of repeated use at the risk of voiding all the stats on the item. Good luck min-maxing that mechanic. The game doesn't have much viable build diversity for higher difficulties. Loot property ranges are so wide that you'll have for example two Uniques of the same name drop with completely different stats and rolls. As a result it feels like there's not much point farming for specific gear. Gear isn't very appealing and that's a shame for a dungeon crawler. The final nail in the coffin is that you can't respec, you can't even undo a misclick so you really should be careful when you're choosing your skills! Luckily it's not all bad, or I wouldn't have recommended this game now would I?
Thankfully the community has come in to lift the game out of the hole it had dug for itself. There are tons of mods, from mods that completely change the gear that drops, mods that add new vendors and even those that add completely new features to the game. If you take the time to mix and match you'll be able to craft a version of this game that's most enjoyable to you. This awesome mod support is what makes Torchlight great, despite it's shortcomings.

I burned through the story on normal mode rather quickly and beat the main boss at level 29. I didn't die once until the last 3 levels and then proceeded to get my face smashed repeatedly by the final boss. I only did the fame quests and skipped all other side quests. The level cap is 100, which may explain the difficulty of the final boss. I did finally best him though.
There is a lot to like with torchlight. There are three playable classes. Alchemist(mage), Destroyer(warrior), and Vanquisher(ranger). Simple point and click movement with your left mouse button, which is also a basic attack when targeting an enemy. Your right mouse button is an alternate attack(assigned by you). You can assign hot keys to 1-9 for attacks, spells, and potions. Every class gets three different skill trees to assign your points as you level. You get points to put into your base stats as you climb the ranks as well. I didn't play any other classes except the vanquisher, but I thoroughly enjoyed the ranged attacks. You also get a pet(cat or dog) that not only assists you in battles, but also has inventory space. You can load them down with junk gear and stuff you don't want and send them to town to sell while you continue your journey. Each character get a chest of their own in town and one shared chest that can be accessed by any player on your account. The graphics are a little dated and a bit cartoonish, but it didn't really take away from the gameplay for me. I think you could probably run through the story on normal in a weekend if you kept at it. Overall I give it a 7/10 and would certainly recommend it.

A unique element of the game is that you have a pet. This can support you (mostly in lower difficulties) and acts as loot mule. The graphics are a bit cartoony. Whether this is a plus or negative depends on the individual. A bigger issue is that magic damage against you has really poor scaling. Torchlight's elemental reductions remove only a fraction of the huge damage you take late in the game which is a really annoyance.
There's the main story dungeon which has 35 floors with one final meat shield boss and The Shadow Vault, a secondary dungeon that is unlocked after you beat the game once (including on fresh characters) It's an endless dungeon that goes for ever. It's full of random enemies and hero monsters. Grindy and a little boring.
Bosses don't respawn so boss farming isn't a thing. Primarily you'll farm gold and use that to enchant your gear to potentially broken levels. This is offset by the fact that it can randomly wipe it's stats instead. This was better balanced in the sequel by making it less powerful while not wiping your item. Beating the game lets you retire that character and 'heirloom' an item to give it a big buff for your next character.
I enjoyed playing through the story dungeon with the characters. It doesn't take too long to complete the achievements. It doesn't have much long term draw compared to other games. There is just enough build diversity or interesting content compared to other games in the genre like Titan Quest, Path of Exile, etc. It's still worth playing but I'd suggest waiting for a sale first.

This is the original game, so obviously it has been much improved upon in Torchlight II.
I was bored in quarantine, so decided to play the original. It's ok. However, the areas improved in TLII are glaring here. Limited inventory, too much junk loot, too many junk items you need identify scrolls for. Huge damage spikes from enemies.
The final boss fight is a HUGE spike in difficulty to fight compared to the entire campaign, and honestly I didn't even care to finish it. Big boss with gigantic health pool that summons tons of adds. I google searched to see if I was doing something wrong, and many many people have had the same reaction. Meh. Didn't bother to grind it. Don't care.
Anyway, I don't recommend this game. Proceed directly to Torchlight II, it's good and also has multiplayer and many improvements. Makes this game feel like a beta.

ARPG /hack ‘n slash made by some of the guys behind the wonderful Diablo, Diablo 2 and the Fate games.
What I liked about it:
-3 classes just like the first diablo (similar : warrior, archer, and mage type classes)
-Skills are great fun and cool looking
-Spells you can equip on your pet
-Pet system just like in the Fate games (your pet can be send to town to sell your excessive loot).
-The music feels different but I felt the Diablo vibe behind it
-Art style (graphic) even though more cartoony, it mixed well with the general setting of the game
-Story is similar to the one from Diablo 1.
-Replayability and many different possible builds for the classes to experience with.
-the fact that you can use bows, swords and guns is an interesting mix
-fast and nervous gameplay (need to react fast) which makes it interesting and challenging
-different enemy types
-some surroundings/environnement were nice, some dwarven halls reminded me of Lords of the Ring (dwarf mines).
What i didn’t like about it:
-They decided to give the game perspective so you will often go up or down stairs, but enemies will attack and rush you from afar, unfortunately your attacks won’t always hit them if they are up the stairs or on another height (it’s really annoying).
-I played Mage, and sometimes I felt like my character wasn’t responding to my commands ( while using ember lance, a kind of ray shooting from your hand) sometimes I was able to turn around while attacking to hit enemies coming from different directions and other times I just couldn’t, I was locked firing in the same direction.
-While doing the Dwarven Vault mission, I wanted to exit the portal and re-enter it, but the portal disappeared. I can understand it’s a secret portal, but why make it a one way only, I don’t understand the reason behind that.
-my pet and myself sometimes got stuck, had to exit the game and that did the trick (got stuck behind a lever I had just activated).
-the teleportation skill of the mage worked much better in Diablo 2. (can only teleport a few meters away).
-Mobs just suddenly appear when you approach their spawning point i gues (like console games).
-maps are re-used many times (some levels).
-my pet sometimes decided it didn’t want to follow me and would go wander off, or just be idle while i got attacked.
Game issues bugs/glitches encountered:
-got stuck a couple of times
-pet didn't react like it should
To make it short, I played this game to experience Torchlight, because I’m a big fan of Diablo and Diablo 2, but would rather recommend to just skip this one and directly go play Torchlight 2, which is in many ways much better.

It's a generic Diablo-style ARPG. It never really clicked for me, but I generally need at least some kind of compelling narrative context to push me through so much repetitive action combat, and Torchlight failed to deliver that. If combat alone is enough for you to enjoy a game, you'll likely get more mileage out of Torchlight than I did.

The longer you play the game though the more problems become apparent and especially my playthrough on Very Hard Hardcore made some of these painfully obvious. Here are some of the gripes I had with the game:
Items:
- less than 1% of the items you find are even remotly useful
- the number of different attributes an item can roll is way too huge and there are a lot of useless ones
- you are still forced to collect all of the crap items to make some gold which makes it annoying and a waste of time
- the best items you can get do not drop but you just buy them from the vendor
- armor and resistances reduce the damage you take by a flat amount which does not really help against damage spikes (esp. on higher difficulties)
- there are item sets but these items are quite bad and you most likely will not be able to get even one set bonus when playing through the whole game
Enchanting:
- costs a lot of gold, can completly destroy the item, can fail, you have no control, and you can get a lot of useless stats
- being able to come back to an early floor because there are shrines of enchantment seems like a design error because it encourages you to repeatedly do easy content or just run around to upgrade your gear
Skills:
- even on the hardest difficulty you can just pick only one active skill and put the rest of your skill points into passive skils which makes the gameplay quite boring
Gems:
- give very little stats compared to gear and should probably just be ignored since they take up a lot of space in your stash and it takes some time to combine them, you might only use them in weapon sockets
Difficulty:
- on easier difficulties you can probably play without any gear because it is irrelevant and on higher difficulties you just need a lot of health rolls on your gear the game does not become harder in any other way
Pet:
- your pet constantly dies on higher difficulties
- while you can send your pet to town to sell items, it takes quite a long time, your pet cannot help you in combat during that time and it is probalby easier and faster if you just sell the items yourself
Maps:
- while it is nice that you can buy maps you have little to no control over the level of the map or which maps you can buy since they scale to your own level which makes them too hard on higher difficulties
