Über das Spiel

Through the Woods is a third-person Norse horror adventure set in a forest on the western shores of Norway that tells the story of a mother and her missing son. Through reactive narration, the player experiences the mother’s re-telling of the events surrounding her son’s disappearance. Players follow the path of a terrified woman who has forced herself to enter this terrible place for the sole purpose of finding her son, in a setting heavily influenced by Norse mythology and Norwegian folk tales.

With Through the Woods, Antagonist have captured the feeling of the forest as they saw it as children, with all the fear and mystery that comes from roaming through it alone. This is coupled with a powerful story and high quality sound design, which in the darkness of the forest becomes a core mechanic. Through the Woods is a profound experience that directly delivers the feelings of loneliness and loss in a terrifying place...

Features:
 • Explore stunning environments and experience stories inspired by Norse mythology, Norwegian art and nature
 • Uncover dark tales of the past and present through reactive narration
 • Creative use of light and darkness generate deceptive environments
 • A frightening journey, accompanied by grim, beautiful sound design

Through the Woods, ein Indie-Horrorgame spielt im schönen Norwegen.

Through the Woods hat mehrere Auszeichnungen trotz metacritic 63 erhalten.

Not sure why did I buy this game.
There's no inventory, no map... You play as a mother which runs in the woods looking for her son, aaand... That's it? Like literally that's it.

Norwegian voice over makes it a bit better but hard to recommend, even if u're into nordic folklore, quality is just not there, sluggish to move around and the infamous Unity optimization.

Through the Woods is neither a pure walking sim nor a horror game, but rather an adventure with horror elements.

You can beeline to the end and it will take you about 2-3 hours, but honestly if you do that you won't enjoy much. Take your time to explore and read about the Norse lore that's in the game, it will be a much more meaningful experience. If you don't rush through it, you should be able to finish it within 4-6 hours. Although you can't really deviate from the game's linear path, you do get the chance to explore a bit and read lots of interesting lore and pieces of the story.

There is a sprint option which helps, and although you can't save manually, there are many checkpoints throughout the game, some of them right before a sequence that might result in death if you're a first timer and don't really know what you're doing. Yes you can die multiple times, but you can continue from the last checkpoint, so no biggie. Also, you have to die by each enemy at least once to get achievements :D There are enemies, but they are few and far between, plus it won't be difficult to avoid them or fend them off (you can't kill them). They aren't there to increase the difficulty level, but merely to add to the spooky/horror experience.

Considering this was made by a very small team and the game basically started out as an experiment, you shouldn't expect to be blown away by the graphics. That said, the environment is generally beautiful to look at, although the walking animations and face modelling are mediocre. I found the English voice acting pretty decent, but according to many other reviews it seems that the Norwegian voice acting (with English subs so that you know what's being said) is the best choice.

The atmosphere, story and music are the game's strong points. Like I said earlier, it isn't a horror game, but it is definitely atmospheric and spooky. The background music and the general audio is very good, and you also get to enjoy a nice story.

Overall, a pretty good game for what it is. If you're into walking sims/adventures with great atmosphere and horror elements and won't mind the lack of action/fighting sequences, you should definitely get this game. I thoroughly enjoyed it. That said, considering the game length and mediocre graphics, the asking price of $20 is too high. Wait for a sale, but don't miss it!

Alright, so I finished playing this game after 2 sessions of around 2 hours each. Short game, can be shorter if you ignore the side stuff and just beeline for the end. It was made by a five-man team of uni graduates and it shows. Everything I'm about to say is not meant to downplay their efforts or just negativity for the sake of it, but simply my experience. Long one ahead, TLDR at end.

To begin with, the animations are robotic and janky. The running/walking animation is okay but it gets really weird in cutscenes where it is most visible. There are some high-tension/dramatic moments during which the animations kinda took me out of the immersion.
The graphics are a weird point as well. I played with highest settings through the entire game. The game is set in western Norway, one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but the graphics are mediocre at best. I wasn't expecting anything insane because I knew from the beginning that it was a small team, but it was slightly disappointing how everything looked decent unless you looked at stuff too long. The environments look nice, the houses and their interiors, trees and general vegetation also looked fine and monster models were okay. Facial animations could have definitely used more work; the human characters looked kinda bored and uninterested all the time, yet the story is very serious and sad. I had issues with shadows, not sure if this is a common occurence. Very often during gameplay black shadow boxes appeared on the screen. This was easily fixed by looking down or away for a second but it happened really often-this might be on my end but I'm not sure.
I also found it kinda sad that they had a decent looking environment but decided to set 90% of the game in nighttime. Yes, I know its a horror experience but I feel like more daylight sequences would have been great.
The water looks absolutely terrible though. Imagine World of Warcraft pre-Cataclysm, its on that level. Basically just a grey color with little to no animations.

As for the story, it is well written and enjoyable. The characters have some depth to them even in such a short experience and as the plot unfolds it gets better and better. Nothing super crazy but an original experience and the integration of Norse myth and folklore done very well! The main story is good on its own but it was also very fun finding and reading through the side stuff you can find in the game. Lots of villager notes, collectibles, child corpses, dwarven gates...The notes are interesting as they all offer additional lore and stories about the island and it's inhabitants.

The music is absolutely fantastic. From the menu music, in-game soundtracks (Myrkstad is incredible) to the scary horror-moments where music builds tension in an already creepy environment, no complaints here. Just that Myrkstad could have been used more often ;)

The voice acting is not impressive at all in the English version. I replayed a bit in Norwegian and it is SO much better- I strongly recommend completely ignoring the English VA and playing in Norwegian from the beginning. You have access to subtitles in several languages so it shouldn't be a problem (unless you really hate Norwegian for some reason). It is far superior both in audio quality and general voice acting.

Mob encounters were sort of hit or miss for me. I enjoyed all of them except the Huldra, found them to be really annoying and took away from the experience. Became frustrating really fast rather than scary. A certain pair of siblings was probably the highlight of the mob encounters in this game, as well as a certain big good boi. The Huldra made exploration something I didn't want to do because they are kind of a BS enemy and made me want to run through an area asap instead of taking my time like eveyrwhere else. The game is true to its name, you'll be going through the woods A LOT, but these fuckers made enjoying that impossible.

The audio quality is also weird. For most part it's brilliant, from the ambient sounds, the forest, everything except hostile mobs. Very atmospheric and done well, but the enemies are way, way too loud. The Huldra screams especially, but when you die all mobs seem to be louder than in general, and I always unplugged my earphones immediatly upon dying just to save my hearing. Don't know whats up with this.

The gameplay is simple. You have a flashlight that can be used on certain enemies and you can run, sneak, use a torch at a certain part of the game, and one door combination which isn't hard to guess.

All in all, Through the Woods is a decent experience, but I recommend getting it on sale like I did. I don't think this one is worth 20$ for such a short and quite honestly often janky experience, but if you want to support the devs then by all means go ahead, however I spent 4$ on it and I don't regret it- if I spent 20 I would have. This may also be due to the pay in my country not being very good so spending 20 bucks on a game is kind of an investment (a bit higher than 300 USD is the minimum wage here).

TL;DR- fine game, definitely recommend if you like bits of Norse mythology in a horror experience but not for full price, and it was made by 5 people so do not expect some insane masterpiece.

Nøk Nøk Nøkken on heavens door!

Starts out a little bit poor if I'm honest, felt a little tacky, but soon get's going and ends up feeling like a cross between Alan Wake and Northern Journey. Full of Skandinavian folklore and mythology. I sort of guessed Nøkken would be somewhere, I wasn't disappointed! Also has some creepy trolls and a cool witch.

There's a weird glitch in Red Riding Hood location and the sea could do with a polish, from a distance it's just totally white with no texture. Like Northern Journey, you're going to know straight away whether you'd like it or not from the screenshots. Sells for around £15, I think that's just about fair but I'd wait for a sale if it's something you're only going to play the once.

I almost NEVER downvote a game. A game has to be very bad at what it promises.

This game is a bad walking simulator. Don't know about the story, because can't get past how the control are so clunky.

I could only play 5 minutes, because of very bad walking mechanics. I wanted a sad story, with family in it and i wanted a relaxing environment. But i could not relax by walking because how i was supposed to relax walking like that!

Another walking simulator that deserves 0 attention. Sorry devs, i did not mean to be harsh, look at my reviews, i never write this way. But this game is unfinished, unpolished, bad voice acting, bad character animations etc.

This game is good.
But:
- it annoys me when i read or look at something... after finishing i have to turn the flashlight on again
- faces of those mom and son. they look really awful
- i went through almost the same shit as her husband. and it wasn't something i wanted to remember

Strongly not recommended for people with post-traumatic things related to divorce, kids, protection orders, etc
This game is triggering

I would absolutely recommend this game to anyone that loves spooky games with a rich story. The lore through out the game was beautifully sprinkled in and helps immerse the player into the life of the mother trying to find her stolen son. You feel the mother's pain, and empathize with her as the game progresses, but the ending and mysterious family past was a twist I was not expecting and left me utterly speechless once it was revealed. I would highly recommend if you have a few hours to spare and want to have your heart ripped out of you for the day. 10/10 would play again.

This game I give a 3/5. I didn't really know what to expect because I did watch a video with someone giving it horrible reviews and then on the other hand read good reviews. So my tips going into it.
*Expect lots of running around/walking around with no combat.
*Worth the money if on sale.
*Take your time running through it and soak in all the surroundings because you pick up on some cool things for it is a forklore coming together and creating the atmosphere for you. If you rush through, you will miss a lot of the things like Frozen giants and dragons that blend in with the nature that do not oppose any threat to you. ( i randomly turned around and saw an eye looking at me)

All in all I do think this is a pretty decent game. I would play it again.

This game is great and really enjoying it. They did a great Job with the character audio too. I would say this is a must play.
Things that would make it better are if they added 3d surround sound and fixed a few minor graphical bugs I found in Chapter 4, also when reading letters it wont let you scroll down and up on them using the mouse wheel. Also when selecting chapters on the main menu, once you go to the right to look at a higher chapter it wont let you go backward to a prior chapter unless you cycle through all of them by going to the right. Another thing I would like to see is better quality water effects and visuals.

I wanted to like this game and the first scene, despite some less than amazing graphics, gave me a feeling that I was in beautiful Norway, taking in the nature all around me. Pulled me in pretty good. But then it just turns into a lot of walking and occasionally being murdered by something you didn't even know was there. Trial and error to sneak past the enemy and then it's back to walking more. The voice acting isn't great either. Hopefully the team takes this and does something with this, but I just have too many great games to slog through this one right now.

If you don't mind the worst looking character models that you'll ever see in a video game, glowing ps1 water and particle effects, low quality textures or the jankier cut scene animations than Sims 1 has and you're okay to spend 20€ on a 2 hour game, then it's pretty good.

The story is interesting and the game is really athmospheric and spooky. If you're a fan of Alan Wake and/or Hellblade then this should fit for you. I bought it from discount for under 4€.

2 minutes in, and I get stuck standing on a tree stump. 2 hours in, and I get stuck in a bucket. You'd think for a walking sim game, they'd have perfected the pathing. 10/10 for the collision physics of this game.

Other than that, a decent experience with less than 5 hours of gameplay. Not worth the full $20, but well worth the $2 or $3 I spent on it.

This was a surprisingly good game for a team of five people. I wasn't particularly scared whilst playing it, aside from a few tense moments, but the lore and the presentation of a darker interpretation of norse mythology was captivating and very well designed. Good music and audio work, too, but a short game and the story itself was a bit lackluster. Animations were fairly stiff, but clutter and the lore you get for exploring a bit off the main path was a great reward.

A decent length game (3.7hrs with a guide) about Norse mythology. The graphics are nothing spectacular but that doesn't take away from the over-all great story which keeps you interested and engaged throughout the entire game duration.

Some achievement progress didn't show up straight away and i had a flashlight glitch when picking up items sometimes which made me reload the saves a few times, but overall it's a good Norse horror game that leans a bit into the walking simulator feel as you only really pick up pages/ items and there's no combat.

Decent game... Nothing more for me.
What can i say? Really did not like it like most ppl i guess.
For me another waking simulator with reading papers and press shift to run, yea i give them there were some enemies, the best part was music and atmosphere was very good.
But the story was ... for me weak really did not care that much.
And the biggest problem was the length, like 95% of this type of games, all are like 2 or so h. that is why mostly i dont buy then, really not worth the money, for me ofc.
But wanted to try this, was cheap really so was like whatever.

A good horror game that nails the atmosphere but in the end fails to deliver a more compact experience.
I will start with the positives, spooky atmosphere and great sound design give this game, the story is very good and makes you ant to know more about it.Music is also spot on,
Now on to the negative things-The great atmosphere is in 60 % ruined by a walking corridor type of gameplay and the creatures are no threat once they kill you once but the one creature I really liked was that blind one and thats the problem ,that creature should ve been used much more instead of other dull ones. There are large parts of the game where you just hold the shift button and that break the immersion.Voice acting is ok for the most part but at times it is very bad,
Now you may be thinking there are lots of negatives but in the end this is a solid horror game that has potential and I don't know why they did some things poorly.
This is a good horror game with great atmosphere and good story but it left a sour taste in my mouth because of unfullfilled potential.

A brief but overall pleasant hike through the woods, some of the sights include transfixing lore, effectual atmosphere, sagacious details and a soul-stirring soundtrack. The trek is rather light on horror and you will need to travail the decrepit growth of abysmal voice acting and animation, making it difficult to connect with the characters and in turn, the story.

Succeeds in standing out thanks to its strong and committed motif.

Great story. I really enjoyed this game and the cultural references of lore. It wasn't difficult and not really any fights. Just trying to avoid monsters on occassion. Wayfinding was surprisingly easy. Sound was awesome. Graphics were a little dated but still enjoyable. Finished in one setting in a little over two hours. Not much of a replayable game but definitely a good experience.

I recommend this game to people who are interested in Norse/Viking culture and mythology. The gameplay mechanics are limited (they might seem boring to some people) but the atmosphere is great. The developpers (an indie studio) really put a lot of care and attention to details into the game. I recommend playing this with Norwegian audio and English subtitles, as the English voice acting is not very good. However the Norwegian voice acting seems OK. I would even say that the voices of some enemies and creatures/ monsters (I won't tell you which) is excellent.

I wanted to like this game, and gave it a couple chances with a break in between, in case I had just not been in a place to enjoy it the first time around. It just didn't work for me.

Reasons I wanted to like this game: beautiful scenery, interesting use of Norse mythology transported to the modern world, a female protagonist who was divorced and had a son... she was an 'everyday person' (not a magical being, warrior and/or sexualised).

But I just couldn't get into it. The protagonist is retelling a story about her experience with her son.... she often sounded unemotional at times that I would expect otherwise (for example, she encounters Grarm (a wolf guardian at Hel's gate, shown bloodied and suffering, begging for death), to whom she speaks to monotonously, even as the wolf asks her to put it out of its misery, and even as/after she kills the creature, she sounds unemotional.

I also wanted to like it because it was described as a horror game...

I didn't feel any sense of horror/fear while playing.... very dark scenes, sometimes so much so, that it was difficult to see where I was going made playing more annoying than helpful in establishing mood.... perhaps if the music/sound effects were more evocative of a terrifying situation, it would have worked better, but the music and dark scenery didn't come together to give an effective horror mood while playing.

I gave up partway through and skipped through remaining scenes on a youtube play-through... the ending, I found anticlimatic. Perhaps this too was because the protagonist's dialogue was given with little emotion, be it expressing sadness at past events, or pride in her son's bravery, it all seemed the same to her, and in turn, to me, the player, who found it difficult to relate, or care, or to experience excitement, horror, sorrow, pride, etc in a horror game, which I would expect to cause a stronger emotional response in the player, which is part of the appeal of the horror genre to me.

While the scenery/graphics are very nice, the actual animation is rather stiff (especially obvious early on when she is swimming). I can forgive this from a smaller studio, but some may find that it further detracts from enjoying the game.

For the most part, the game is a story the woman is telling about a past experience... its is mostly a 'walking sim', as there is little to do but follow the paths and pick up a few objects and hints. While games that are basically 'walking sims' can be done well to tell a story,I wasn't drawn into this one.

Ultimately, I felt this game had promise, but expecting a horror (and thus more emotional) game, I was disappointed.

If the game looks interesting to you, I suggest watching a little bit of a play through, and/or getting it when on a deep discount. Ask yourself if the way the protagonist speaks early on (and will continue to throughout the game), will affect your ability to enjoy it as a horror game.

A good game filled with Norse/Scandinavian atmosphere + mythology.

A game about a not-very-good mother who suddenly discovers she loves her child and rushes to save him from a creepy guy until the sunrise.

The game itself is basically a walking simulator with a few monsters and a lot of collectibles. Everything can be done in 1 walkthrough.

8/10 Trolls

No.
Felt unfinished. One important rule was not applied here. If you do something, do it right or don't do it at all. If you make a character swim, at least animate it properly.

So like, this game is pretty neat. I recommend it to people who don't mind playing games that have a whole lot of potential, but maybe don't entirely meet it. I enjoyed the story, the atmosphere, the vital spoop-factor, and the environments (except for the water, which is oddly illuminated to a point that it jump-scared me on occasion). I was really digging the story up until the last chapter I think, where we got a whole lot of exposition dumped on us and then it was over. Basically, in a nutshell, I would love to see this game with a triple-A budget, because there is SO much to praise about it. It seems to have come down to time and other limiting factors.

My personal opinion, I bought it on sale for $7 and seeing as it's only a 6 hour adventure game I think that may have been all I'd spend on it. Still, a great experience. Can't wait to see what else the developers make!

I played and finished this on stream for spooooooky October and had conflicting feelings about it.

I'm playing with English audio, which may have an impact. Overall, I found the environment and monsters great and scary! However, I have huge problems with the story and characters.

I didn't know what to expect going into this, and was really creeped out as the sun sank going through what seemed like an abandoned village. There was good suspense building up to the encounters, and meeting the creatures had been creepy but intriguing. It looks beautiful, the skyline and how it changes throughout the story is impactful, and the sound design really fit well with the environment and added to the eeriness of the world.

The game is a little clunky and stiff, as walking over rocks or other objects really impacts the character's position in camera and the camera perspective. I also believe I had an encounter that was bugged, where I believe a monster was supposed to kill me but I walked through them a bunch of times - there's an achievement to die from them from what I gathered.

After a while, the protagonist became frustrating. There are audio lines that sound and feel unrealistic considering what I've experienced already in the storyline. For example,
I walked through buildings of dead bodies with no reaction; afterwards, I saw a dead body positioned elsewhere that she made a dramatic remark about. Also, I would see large, mythological monsters from folklore and I would understand I was in a supernatural world where the boundaries no longer make realistic sense, to have her remark at a minor piece of architecture or object about it's misplacement in the world.
I don't know if playing with English audio had an impact on the poor quality voice acting or the rhythm of dialogue, but I felt like a few things were delayed or did not make contextual sense.

While that stuff I could laugh off and still be convinced I was in a horrifying world, there are politics in this. The protagonist's backstory is brought up at the climax, which unfortunately reinforces my dislike of the character I'm playing. Her story is
the child that she has that was abducted by a mythological creature had been regularly abused by her, which she claims as unintentional or accidental. Both she states herself, and it appears that way in one flashback, however it's portrayed in a way that she could be using an accident as an guise for abuse she wanted to commit. Then the child's father divorces her, implied that it was because of her abusive behaviour. In either a custody hearing or court case, she lies and claims the father was abusive, and the courts side with her. Finally, the father kills himself, implied that it was because of the abuse claims and/or not being able to have custody of his son.
There are a lot of problems to unpack with this climatic story line. I gave the benefit of a doubt to the writers and looked up local Norway statistics and analysis of this, but this narrative has the same problems if it were written in North America.
First, child abuse rates by women are far less frequent as child abuse rates by men. Secondly, child custody courts do not side with women more than men in child abuse claims. Finally, women's false reporting of child or domestic abuses are incredibly rare.
While I can absolutely remove this game from reality and our real lives, there is an huge problem with telling fictitious stories that involve real life social issues and use myths raised by
anti-feminist and anti-women misogynist organizations. It uses men's victimhood stories that - although absolutely exist - are rare and are often used to encourage anti-feminist grassroots organizing or anti-women governmental legislation or policies.
Edit: Also, how did I forget that every time
a character refers to a woman in the game they have to use a misogynist slur! Every time! Whether they're human or mythological creature. Really.
There are ways to talk about these tropes, but how it was handled here really turned me off of the game. This plot line reminded me so much of The Room I think I exclaimed it out loud on stream and just pushed to finish it. It's also what tipped me off to not recommend this, otherwise I would have felt this was a fine scare for a little bit with some clunkiness.

+ Not a bad game, but it has a lot of problems

-Game graphics are poor compared to the required system and not optimal

+ The game is in the style of walking simulator and has a good story next to it

- The design of the environment is not very attractive

+ The game has a multiplayer tag, while it is not in the multiplayer game, and it is clear from the appearance of the game that it is completely offline.

- I do not have a special opinion about this game because I did not experience much and my opinion is secondary

Through the Woods embarks the player on a mythical journey filled with Norse folkore. A third person view allows the control of miss Dahl, a middle-aged mother, whose son gets taken abbruptly away. What follows next is a quest, search, to find out what befell the missing boy. As the story picks off, the mother has not have a single clue who took Espen away from her. A flashlight, and a torch at some point, are the only usable items, leaving her defenseless, which intensifies the players vulnerability enhancing the psychological atmosphere. By discovering clues, notes, written stories and narration two stories come together and build to an end-game climax.

Graphics are fantastic for a game released in 2016, apart from some non-gamebreaking glitches here and there. Level desing is done excellently, efficiently giving an open world feeling, well done for an indie title. The forest and its surroundings are a pleasure to roam.

Music and sounds effects are good, immersive and add to the experience as a whole. The panting / breathing sounds of miss Dahl for example. More than once i mistook them for some environmental ambient sound, genuinly made me scare. Voice acting could be better though. Protagonist sounds over-emotional, a bit over-acting.

Through the Woods can best be described as a walking simulator, rather than a survival horror title. This fact doesn’t have to be a bad thing, though. When i bought the game (at a 85% discount), i was expecting a walking simulator with some puzzles and / or search missions. Since the story really slowly picks up and familiarises the player with it’s controls and surroundings, i was pleasantly suprised to encounter the darker, creepier aspects Through the Woods has to offer. I am not the kind of gamer who reacts well to horror games, especially not the survival horror ones. But this game has a nearly perfect mix between walking simulator and survival horror, simply because the horror aspect is kept to an absolute minimum. Mostly you are wandering through the forest looking for clues and notes, mysteriously keeping the player thirsting for more as you progress the storyline and the pieces of the puzzle come together. Don’t expect any jump scares, instead a more subtle, kind approach to horror. The kind where you get warned when something is about to happen, regarding the save stones where one respawns after a death. One can look at this game as a horror game for beginners.

Game is rather short, having encountered players completing it in under 4 hours. Myself needed 8 hours to complete the story and collect all the achievements, effectively leading to a perfect game. The game lends itself excellently towards achievements hunters, simply because of the fact all achievements can be collected even after completing the storyline. One has the option to go back, using the chapter selection menu, to whichever location the player wants and collect the missing item, note or action. Twenty-seven achievements are up for grabs.

Swedish YouTuber “Zalzar” has a nice playthrough online, which i recommend. Zalzar has knowledge about Norse mytology and folklore himself and loves to share it with his viewers as well. There’s an inset with his webcam footage in the top left corner. Knowing he’s playing Through the Woods for the first time, seeing his reactions and facial expressions are often hilaric. What i did was: to avoid spoilers, played for 30-45 mins, then watched the played part of Zalzar’s playthrough. Pleasant to see him experience the same scares, reactions and remarks i had myself.
Link: Zalzar’s Through The Woods playthrough (YouTube)

Recommended for:
- Scandinavian mythology and/or Norse folklore fans
- walking-simulator lovers
- mystery, light-horror gamers
- achievement hunters

I did enjoy Through the Woods a lot, which they made more game like these.
Antagonist, being a developer team from Oslo, Norway as well, could not have been more appropiate to create a gem like this.

Cheers,
SultanK

This game has a good story, nay, it has two good stories, but having them together as one doesn't really work to their advantages.
I love the setting and many places are very moody, but the gameplay lets it down.
I don't dislike walking simulators, which for the most part is what this game is. But the walking isn't very nice because the environments are designed to look open, while you can usually just follow a pretty narrow path or you'll run into invisible walls (knee high rocks still count as invisible walls, but sometimes there's not even that blocking you.)

Third-Person Dear Esther meets survival horror
Pros:
- Gorgeous graphics (for the most part)
- Good gameplay at times with a somewhat decent story and a few wtf moments
Cons:
- Plenty of texture hiccups to go around
- Horrible character models
- A less than stellar story (I listed the story as a pro but overall it was a pretty boring story)
- Terrible voice acting
Overall:
I would recommend this game if you like walking simulators like Dear Esther and want some horror aspects added in, but if you're looking for more than that I would skip this title. I received it as a part of a 5 dollar bundle and would recommend it as such.

I cannot say that game is particularly challenging and initially I had rather big expectations based on prologue.. It was until I reached first act...

Good things:
1. Graphics is descent
2. Soundtrack is descent
3. Game's beginning is not half bad
4. North lore is quite interesting

Bad things
1. Unbalanced music comparing to game sound
2. Ugly hit-boxes, terrain glitches, invisible walls
3. Awkward camera angles in closed areas
3. Extreme amount of walking and not that many action
4. The amount of monsters encounters is low. They are not frustrating, mostly just boring
5. Ending and overall story development

I've completed this game on live stream and will complete it once again to make sure that all achievements are collected. Apart of that - I cannot recommend this game. If you want an atmospheric game with north mythology narrative, drama and good psychedelic experience - Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is your choice.

Pros:

Ummm......it's quite pretty

Cons:
Absolutely atrocious voice acting. Not only is the actress dull and lifeless, it sounds like it was recorded over a phone line.
Boring characters. I didn't care about any of them. Which is a bit of a problem in a story-heavy game like this.
Annoying camera. Third-person is fine, but this is several metres to the right as well, which means it's impossible to see anything in front of you if it's on the left hand side.
Kept getting stuck in the scenery with no way out except to restart.
Crashes constantly. I've never been able to play for more than about ten minutes without the game hanging.

An enjoyable, albeit short, linear story of a mother searching for her son. The plot explores Norse mythology and while the mechanics are 90% walking sim, the story is very touching. I was initially skeptic to trying out a socalled walking sim. Thankfully the Game had much, much more to offer. While it`s true for the most part you are left to hide, you do have a flashlight and other items you find that can aid you on your quest. As a Norwegian I`ve always loved out myths and fairy tales, beeing able to read the runes in game was also a neat little bonus. The graphics are top notch, espesially considering this is an indie game. I`ve always been a fan of horror games and played just about every horror game out theere on every console imaginable. Not since the Silent Hill series, has a game moved me so emotionally. It`s the sort of game that will stay with you and make you reflect on it long after you`ve played it, and haunt you for decades to come. This was a much needed breath of fresh air, when it comes to story driven games.
The only downside is the game is a bit short, and leaves you wanting to know the answer to a lot of questions.

The biggest horror in this game is realising the main character is a Karen.

I really wanted to like this but when I finished the game I felt a bit disappointed.

Its clear that a huge amount of love and care has been put into modelling the world, its just a great shame that there isn't much of a game to back it up.

I was also disappointed that the 'lore' was very light on and mostly communicated through picking up written notes - nothing novel in the story telling here, although I very much enjoyed the section with the 'brothers'.

The interesting parts of the game are interspersed with long sections of travel so you tend to run as much as possible and lose the immersion in the great environment.

I played this with a 2080ti and it looked really beautiful although it made my card wail like a banshee!

The dead lay restlessly there, forgotten by everyone.

This is an interesting walking simulator/survival-horror where the story of a mother who loses her child mixt with the Norse mythology.

The best of the game is the atmosphere. The woods and the viking scenaries are very well designed, helps a lot to get you engaged in the story.

Unfortunately, this game has quite things to improve on. It has bugs, the controls and the camera spins are clumsy sometimes, the graphics of the water and sunshine are absurdly bad and, finally, there are some FPS drops in certain areas.

Either way, is not a bad game and, if you like the walking simulators or you're looking for some 'light' survival-horror, is a decent option.

Recommended on sale.

Through The Woods is a quite simple walking simulator that actually manages to deliver an interesting storyline with a good build up. We are greeted by a idyll scene of a lake view summerhouse, which doesn't last for long because immediately after it our son gets kidnaped by a mysterious man and we need to hit the track... Along the way we discover mysterious buildings, objects and notes which reference norse mythos and let us learn more about the isolated society inhabiting the island. The environments these things are set in are absolutely gorgeous and photogenic. The night setting with its shifty shadows, supernatural occurrences, unsettling sounds and differentiation between individual stages created an overpowering, heavy hearted atmosphere which manages to play with our head even if we don't get scared easily. Once we're comfortable, or rather used to the living legends theme the game hits us with another layer of disturbance by bringing out compromising scenes from the memories of our female protagonist, which might completely change our judgment of the situation. Unfortunately all of this is a sugar coating of an serious technical issue. The game has weak optimisation and rarely manages to keep a stable 60fps, which makes the gameplay feel kinda choppy. However, if you're similar to me and manage to get over that issue, you will have a good experience.

Not fun, a chore to play. Couldn't even finish it.

The normal walking speed is too slow, making you run everywhere. Collision is broken, making traversing the terrain really janky. Not much to see or explore, same assets copy and pasted from location to location. Path-finding for monsters is sometimes laughably bad (getting stuck on objects, running in circles), and sometimes extremely unfair (it getting you before your tank of a character has a chance to turn).

The map design is bad, couple of different paths, most of which loop you in a circle just to waste time. Long expanses of nothing where you're just walking and listening to poorly written and poorly acted monologues, most of which is the same point said over and over in different ways. Characters are unlikable and unrelatable. Set ups to peoples motivation are rushed and crammed down your throat. Plot holes everywhere.

Performance is terrible. With a i7 6700k and RX 5700xt, I shouldn't be getting frame drops all the way down to 20 at 1080p. It's probably all the geometry that causes broken collision and messes with the animation.

I was going to not review this because I assumed one person made it, which would be a feat. But nope, it was a team of students who managed to raise over 40k for this. No excuse. Hot garbage of a game. Look through the screenshots on the store and you'll have literally seen everything this thing has to offer.

Project should have been half the size, twice the polish.

I recommend the game BUT there are few negative things to point out;
The price. I got it on sale and worth few euros but it's a short game and shouldn't cost that much!
The character is pretty much without expressions so avoid looking at them.

The positive things about the game;
Mythology, vikings and the forest with it's creatures was a nice experience. I loved the sounds, music and the voice acting was okey. The story was interesting and as a parent it probably strikes you more then to your avarage teenager. A bit like Alan Wake but focus on exploring. Gave me few scare jumps but I was glad that I could run around and explore instead of being nervous to get spooked. :^)

Also nice for achievement hunters.
