And pretty much like Talos Principle, other than the already fun puzzles that we are meant to play and solve, there's also a bunch of hidden puzzle that are meant to be secret easter eggs of the game and has nothing to do with the game clear. The fun part comes to finding them, like Talos Principle, these adds to the fun and extra game time of the game, and really, some of these are brilliantly hidden that well, when we found them, the reward is the satisfaction of finding them... for advanced puzzle lover, really, do spend some time finding them, it's worth the trouble! :3 Saw a weird pattern in the flowers? or in the sky? or when you are at a special location aligning everything and it turned into a puzzle line? Wait no longer, interact with it as you normally would with a puzzle in the game and you're in for a surprise! :3 (P/S: you really need to do the environmental puzzle to some extension to finally understand what it means in the secret ending)
Also, this game supports Ansel, so if you're a snapshot enthusiast, you will love that feature! Especially if you enjoy visiting mirror house/perspective art gallery/mad house etc... this game has an whole island size of these stuffs... simply mind blowing.

Still one of the best and most original puzzle games I've come across. It will make want to tear your hair out at times, and there are several moments where you will probably curse the name of the designers, but it never stops being compelling. While many of the puzzles are difficult (and some of them are *really* hard), they are never impossible. The information the player needs to solve them (albeit in a form that you need to figure out rather than just being spelled out for you) is always there.
The overall level design makes it a fantastically immersive experience to play. The sound design has to get a big shout out there as it plays a big part in it - especially as there is no background music. Aside from just being immersive, it's also really rather pretty and doesn't really feel dated at all to me for all it's six years old now.
Not many puzzle games tend to have great replay value, but this is one I keep picking up now and then to see if I can find anything I've missed and because just wandering around on the island the created put together is just pleasant.

Although I would certainly say that this is a punishing and challenging game (you get absolutely no hints as all as to what is going on story or gameplay-wise, there will be NO hand-holding here), I wouldn't say that the game is knowingly taking delight in your frustration in the same way that other games like Pathologic or Dark Souls do, but is instead trying to instill within you the main message of patience, because in reality, trial and error is not going to get you very far in this game (especially in the later sections), you certainly can't brute force your way past it like you can those two previously mentioned games. The only way the game will allow you to proceed is to just stop for a second, and to take your time. In today's modern climate of video games, where advancing technology allows for more and more spectacle and setpieces, it's nice to have a video game just sit you down and tell you to shut the fuck up as it forces you to draw lines over and over and over again.
Thanks for humbling me Witness, I ultimately do appreciate the torment you put me through.

It's a game of puzzles that leave you scratching your head more than once, some may take you ages to figure out and some you get done quite fast. The game uses it's environment, among other things, to bring you these puzzles and it uses clever ways for solutions all the way to the end.
Whenever it gets too tough or even boring, you can just walk away and come back later! It's genius how you can just leave and visit another area to clear your mind, then come back to where you were stuck last time and figure it out finally with a clear mind.
The Witness is certainly an experience. A unique and refreshing one. If you're a fan of abstract puzzles and problem solving, there's much to love here, as I certainly enjoyed it. I just caution that a lot of what makes this game satisfying comes from your interpretation of it, not necessarily through the game itself.

The puzzles are engaging, well designed and get progressively more difficult without ever being unreasonable.
For those who really like their puzzles, there are multiple layers to the game, waiting to be discovered.
I can't recommend it highly enough.

Pretentious. Tedious. Work of Art.
Very unique fusion between a first-person puzzler and walking simulator with profound rewards and secrets for the patiently persistent. Designed by the creator one of the most influential indie game over the course of 7 years. Product of single person vision, passion and - all his Braid money. Pretty brave and commendable when taking into account The Witness development journey. Closest gameplay comparison I can muster from memory is Antichamber, another great indie title. Both share emphasis on puzzles, minimalism, mysticism, pacifism and chill exploration.
First thing to note is absolute minimalism. No UI, no HUD, no weapons nor enemies, only WASD and 2-button mouse. That's it. Just you and puzzle filled island and a beautiful one at that. At least that's what most players will ever see.
Island is decently sized with 11 small sections (biomes) featuring own visuals and sets of puzzles to solve. Majority of which are square shaped panels with chess-like line grid pattern making up 4x4 (more or less) squares. The object is to draw a pattern between two marked points following a set of gradually introduced rules. With difficulty sharply increasing to convey advanced solving methods. As a puzzle enthusiast since early age I can atest difficulty slope is perfect. With over 500 puzzles and enough solving technique variations they personally never became repetitive. Some are truly devious but in a genius kind of way.
Starting section doubles as tutorial area to familiarize you with initial solving techniques. Some puzzles activate various nearby mechanisms or simply unlock a path forward, both of which usually lead to next set of puzzles or just open previously gated off shortcut for a return trip. Player is free to move around the whole island and reach each section right from the start but progressing further into it is typically locked until few puzzles are solved. New sections introduce new rules and some sections may include multiple rules combined making them a fair bit harder.
Particularly liked when there was a twist to what I thought was an established rule and there was no 2nd guessing it. Forest shadows are my favorite because there I learned how to solve seemingly easy, then unsolvable, then ingenious mirror puzzle in earlier section (twisted poles holding puzzle panels). There are many similar examples which every puzzle solver will appreciate and admire. There was 1 poorly executed introduction rule (negative tetris) where game skipped a step and I wasn't the only one who noticed that. And another with broken sound pattern recognition. 2 outta that many ain't half bad though.
Sooner or later with all the clicking and dragging you are bound to miss-click on background environment and then something will happen... You won't get it at first but when eventually you do it will will become one of the greatest moments of your gaming life (couple of mine > Deus EX: HR - first Hengsha visit cutscene; X-PirateZ MOD - reaching 1% research progress). From that point on you will become consumed with appreciation for newfound complexity and beauty that was hidden in plain sight since the very start. Masterpiece worthy were it not for some serious drawbacks so Art will have to do.

Before long you'll start finding these phone sized audio logs hidden around the place. It wont take many to trigger the first irritation. It so happens they contain quotes by famous or deemed important people by the authors, carrying minute long deep philosophical messages that are difficult to understand by themselves let alone in game context. Forget making any sense of them during gameplay, after you finish, or anywhere in between. Feels like devs wanted to artificially elevate the game to some envisioned peak and saw these intellectual dumps as a way to do it. Funny thing is they aren't even related to any puzzle or progress in general.
What is most curios is in end-game you'll discover 'normal' audio logs where this very situation is discussed by two unknown individuals. Probably a metaphor of devs own discussion before they decided to drop nonsensical philosophical ramblings all over and problems it may cause for players. They even cover possible negative outcome of this (like me writing about it just now) so they were fully aware of it but did it anyways. And for what? So much more could have been done, like filling them with actual relevant background story pieces that are chronically lacking for motivational purposes of average Joe gamer. Undesired result is pompous mumbo jumbo that should have stayed in academic literature.
Similar but worse goes for a hidden movie collection, only they are related to puzzles just not in a way that first comes to mind. Perhaps earlier success got to dev's head so he believed games are a fit medium for more than they can realistically handle. Maybe long development cycle got the whole team so deep into the rabbit hole the messages only made sense in their little circle with context no one outside that room will ever understand. Totally misplaced effort about enlightening the playerbase.
Minimalism is also responsible for absence of vital QoL:
- Transport - No fast travel. The island isn't that large as two furthermost points are 3 minutes apart but some puzzles may require revisits to areas were the rule was introduced in order to re-familiarize (especially if one had a break from the game). Traveling over same old paths is when things get tedious. Could've been avoided with simple menu illustrations explaining various rules that would unlock after you had already solved them. Adding fast travel mark once laser is unboxed for example.
- Dynamic in-game map - With your position and orientation marked. Should have been allowed to carry that Boat map.
- Puzzle progress tracker and rudimentary reward system - Something for our trouble. There is no comprehensive way to track your progress in one organized list nor completion check marks. Players need their carrots especially in games like these. There exists one ingenious as it is unwieldy to use place, of which I only learned during my 2nd playthrough and a YT video. It can indeed be useful - for those autistic savants who manage to connect the dots about landmark's additional purpose.
- No run toggle button - FU. Just F U...
Minor source of irritation is save handling. Basically game auto-saves when it feels like it and when you exit. No manual saves but at least there are multiple slots so by the end you will have around a dozen. Needlessly took away from preservation of many cherished moments.
* * *
Game looks and sounds flawlessly, no effort was spared there. No music to speak of but plenty ambient sounds (required for handful of puzzles), more than enough to convey its mystic atmosphere. Cost of visual richness is unusually high VRAM requirement, breaking regular 4:1 RAM/VRAM ratio. Unusual since my old laptop can run everything on High except texture quality which had to be Low (or suffer suicidally atrocious texture streaming) while every other demanding game is polar opposite.
For a seasoned puzzle enthusiast this is a masterpiece not to be missed. I reveled for two weeks in my first playthrough (when it was given away by Epic nearly 3 years ago) solving and discovering all but handful of late game puzzles by myself. Highly recommend while also advising against guide usage for as long patience permits - it's worth the trouble.
On this second playthrough though, knowing what I know now, with the veil of magic ingredient lifted, I can understand some common criticism. It's defo not for everyone. You simply must be of the patient curious puzzle solver kind because if you are not I can't see this game turning you into one.

Don't get me wrong. It's strictly a puzzle game. But the world, the small pieces of dialogue you get, the ways it forces you to think in, and those AHA moments. They're all AMAZING. Haven't 100%'d it yet, but I'm on my way, and trust me I'll take as long as I need to complete this masterpiece.
Play at your own risk. You may lose sanity if you're as hardcore as me in trying to solve everything by yourself.

The presentation is beautiful, but what it lacks is explanation. Some people ~love~ this type of puzzle, where figuring out the rules of the puzzle is literally a part of the puzzle. I, however, ~hate~ this kind of puzzle, and I really only enjoy working within a well explained and established framework.
Does this make it a bad game? No, not at all, so let me be clear again. If you like the kind of puzzle that doesn't give you anything at all, you'll love this. If like me you would rather have the rules explained, you'll hate it.

I will be recommending it, but only to people who are okay with the game just being a journey, or those who are resistant to nauseating movements and flickering lights.
It's a fantastic game that would've been a 10/10 if I had been able to get through to the ending. If you have photosensitivity, don't buy this. If you don't, you should probably buy it as the journey alone was worth the price tag to me, just a shame I couldn't get the satisfaction of seeing it through to the end. But do tell me if you enjoyed the ending :)

Graphics: 4.5/5
Gameplay: 5/5
Audio: 3/5
Story: N/A of 5
Accessibility: 2/5
Graphics:
This games graphics were absolutely stunning when this game first came out, but over time, have fallen off pretty hard since it first came out. I gave this game a 4.5/5 in the Graphics department because the game, to me, still has amazing graphics for its' time (when it came out), and docked it a half point because they've fallen off a bit since then.
Gameplay:
This is the heart and soul of this game. While I understand that there are a lot of people that didn't like the gameplay of this game, or didn't like how repetitive the puzzles got, in my opinion, they just didn't play enough of the game to understand the true beauty of this game's puzzle mechanics and gameplay. The puzzle mechanics in this game are so unique and original that I can never forget them. I also understand peoples' concerns about Accessibility and how it impacts their enjoyment of the gameplay, but I decided to give the accessibility it's own category in this review so I can go over that aspect of the game by itself, as I feel as though accessibility doesn't have as much of an impact on the gameplay as most other people think or feel.
Overall, the puzzles in this game are as varied as they are unique and original. I had a ton of fun learning about all of the new puzzle mechanics and then going through and solving most of the puzzles. There were a few puzzles that I found that were problematic for me to have in this game:
There are two panels inside of the mountain that have this multi-colored background effect that really make those two puzzles completely unpleasant to solve.
There is also the tanker puzzle that has several rules that are not fun to try to figure out, and the actual way to solve the puzzle intentionally without guessing still eludes me to this day, but this puzzle I still enjoyed trying to solve anyways.
Audio:
There is no music in the game, just background noise and other kinds of environmental types of audio. Overall, while it fits the game like a glove, it pales in comparison to what it could have been. This is one of the weaker points of this game. There are also a bunch of puzzles that require the use of audio in order to solve, which causes some problems in terms of accessibility, but I will address those in the accessibility part.
Story:
This is the game's weakest point in that there is basically no story whatsoever. I feel as though this game doesn't really need a story, though, so that's why I said N/A of 5, because the game is fine with what little story it has.
Accessibility:
This is another one of the games' biggest weaknesses. There are many elements in this game that are impossible for people to do who are deaf or hard of hearing, and as far as I have seen, there have been no fixes to these puzzles to make them solvable without the need for audio cues.
In a similar vein, there are a *lot* of puzzles that require the ability to discern different colors, and while I believe the developer DID add a colorblind mode, as I understand it, it doesn't suffice nearly as well as it could.
This is where the developer of this game really dropped the ball and could have done a lot more to help with the disabled community, which is unfortunate, because it really detracts from those who could have really enjoyed this game.
That being said, it is not enough to move me away from my opinion that this game is still a masterpiece of a puzzle game, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be absolutely engrossed and amazed with a puzzle game.

Okay, look. Steam reviews are dumb, okay? Steam users, even dumber - myself very much included. So I want to state right out the gate that even though I don’t recommend The Witness, it’s still a phenomenal game. The problem is - it’s not for me (or really a lot of people).
It’s a game with exactly one focus and one focus only: line puzzles. And it does this amazingly well, in some very unique and unexpected ways. However, know that when the game boasts over 500 puzzles, they mean 500 line-and-grid puzzles. There’s plenty of variety of rules and challenges to these puzzles, but they’re all the same type of puzzle in essence.
The Fun:
- A wonderful experience to have blindly.
- Absolutely gorgeous environment to free-roam in.
- Very unique and unexpected puzzles while still sticking to the basic puzzle formula.
- Layers upon layers of deeper meaning and understanding that can be drawn from the “story” and the gameplay itself.
The Not-Fun:
- The “story”.
- Tediously slow travel methods.
- You will go insane if you’re trying to 100% the game.
- Painfully difficult puzzles that often only have one “correct” solution.
- Some puzzles will be either impossible or very difficult to people with certain disabilities.
- Extremely easy to accidentally teach yourself the wrong rule for a puzzle and become stuck at any point in the game.
The Gist:
If you have insane patience, then this is actually, not the game for you. At least, it’s not meant for you. You’ve already learned one of the main takeaways from the game, but there’s still more to be learned.
If you’re like me, and you have the patience of a goddang fly, then this is not the game for you. But it’s meant for you. It’s meant to teach us to slow the hell down and really, truly understand the puzzles at hand. Not just know them. And that’s incredibly difficult to convey in the game, let alone in a short review.
Regardless, there’s a lot to learn and discover with this game, and it will require quite a few video essays before you can fully parse all that it’s trying to say. So if you wanna test yourself, give it a shot. But if you’re looking for a more traditional puzzle game with a story or something, then this isn’t it. Just a head’s up.

Try not to let it bother you and just play the game for what it is. Enjoy the puzzles and the environment. Ignore the fact that the game designer was patting himself on the back during the entire design process and just have fun with it. I promise you, if you ignore the self-aggrandizing artistic masturbation that is the story/meta-narrative, you will have a wonderful time.
Definitely worth the money when it is on sale.

You walk around on this island solving one simple puzzle, draw a line from the bauble to the end in the correct sequence, but you'll soon find out how deep that concept can really go, and it's so fantastically woven into the very fabric of the world in more ways than you can imagine.
You might find that you'll struggle with some of the puzzles here and there. I couldn't wrap my head around some of the more logical puzzles, but thrived at the abstract ones. I definitely had to look up a guide though, thanks IGN.

Initially I thought the game was cool and looked pretty, but then I got tired and almost quit after 2 hours, then I got motivated to keep going and flip flopped back and forth between enjoyment and annoyance with the game overall. I still enjoyed seeing some of the later mechanics and tricks introduced that force you to combine mechanics and juggle multiple things at once. I am not typically a huge puzzle game junkie, but I do enjoy a puzzle game every once in a while. Little did I realize how much The Witness would make me really question myself and make me feel really stupid.
The game follows an easy to learn, hard to master type of gameplay as the gameplay loop consists of puzzles connecting a line from one end to another on various monitors littered throughout the land and hundreds of times over across a playthrough. The Witness tosses aside narration, background music for the most part, a real plot, story/lore building aside from some secrets you can find and instead starts you off right away dropped into the world with no explanation, no reason being there, no identifying character that you are playing as. For some this could be a turnoff, but for people who are true puzzle game junkies this probably won't be as big of a negative for them as this game just gets to the point with no fluff padding out game time.
For someone like me though, there were moments where it felt repetitive and that this nice beautiful big world felt lifeless and unfinished somehow and despite my enjoyment with several of the puzzles and the feeling of figuring them out, couldn't shake that feeling that I was expecting a little more out of this game.
Ultimately, this is a game that pure puzzle fanatics only should consider buying. If you do not LOVE puzzle games and figuring out some of the most insane solutions presented for line puzzles and do not LOVE the idea of nothing but moving around and doing 500+ line puzzles and nothing else throughout the game, I would say you can probably pass on this game unless you find a really good deal for it. As someone who has finished the main ending, I can say that there is no magical revelation that provides an exposition dump that makes sense of The Witness that will answer any of the questions you may have such as why are you there or what is the purpose of the whole place...this is not that kind of game. This game is not about the destination but instead the journey. Parts of the journey were cool and a great challenge, but that's the core of the experience and once it's over that's pretty much it. It may seem like I bashed a lot here while still giving it a thumbs up, but there's just enough that was present for me to still appreciate the journey and think to myself how cool and creative some of the puzzles are.
Tldr; Great if you are a puzzle game connoisseur and have an iron will of patience. Avoid if you are neither of these or wait for a sale if you are still curious about it.

The Witness Review
**Spoiler Free**
Quick review: The best puzzle game I have ever played! It’s fantastic! The environmental design and incorporated gameplay are masterful, genius, and inspiring. In my opinion, this is the pillar that all exploration/puzzle games should strive for. I can’t recommend this game enough!
Emotional Experience: When I started the witness up for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect. What awaited me was an absolutely fantastic experience that caught me completely off guard, and continued to do so again and again. It took me but minutes to find myself captivated by The Witness, and left me struggling to find the words to describe this mystic experience.
Words that came to mind were: child-like wonder, curiosity, mystery, adventure, intrigue, inspiring, speechless, dumbstruck, fantastic, wonderful, masterful, clever, appreciative, captivating. On my first sitting, I jotted down this note: “I don’t know why I like this so much. Haha.”
Call it intuition, but before I had the evidence to back it up, I knew this was a special game. I got lost in this world for 45 hours, and I don’t regret a single one. What I appreciated most was the adventurous child-like wonder pulled out of me that I didn’t know I was so longing to reconnect with.
I had various moments in this game where I remember thinking, “This is the most insane game I’ve ever played…This game is insane.” It became a kind of mantra. The sheer genius and creativity behind these puzzles, and this island, is beyond me.
This is a game that will continue to surprise you. As difficult as it can get, I implore you to avoid looking up answers. Those “Eureka!” moments are just too good to be spoiled. It will also help you discover a creativity within yourself you may not know exists.
Gameplay: The gameplay is extremely simple. You walk around an island, look for puzzles, and solve them. The puzzles are largely based around grids, where you must draw a line from point A to point B. There is no jumping, platforming, combat, health, or any kind of action trope. You can walk, run, and solve these puzzles. The thing that I was constantly taken aback by was how creative and ingenious the developers were, to take such a simple concept and create such a magnificent experience. The sheer depth and creativity of the kinds of puzzles you can get out of simply drawing a line was so impressive that I was in awe throughout. The gameplay is simple, the experience is unlike anything I’ve ever had.
It is a slow-paced game because you are tasked with solving puzzles. Just be aware of this. I felt this was a strength, but I understand others may not have the patience.
User Interface: The UI is extremely minimal and very effective. There is no HUD, so your whole screen gets to capture the beauty of the island and the difficulty of the puzzles. There are no character stats to keep track of, no bits of information to read through or be aware of. Everything you need to know in this game is done visually. There is no unnecessary exposition, no text to read, and (except for some collectibles) no dialogue to listen to. There’s nothing to pick up. Just you, the island, and puzzles. In the end, this game is a master class at visual language.
Atmosphere: I’m going to let my glowing review so far speak for the Atmosphere. You feel like you’re in a mysterious and beautiful place, with discoveries and visual art around every corner. The visual language is so strong that even without any dialogue, text, or cinematic to present a story or character, I felt more immersed in this game than in any I’ve played in a long time.
There are so many beautiful visual moments, it’s like every turn around a corner just hits you with this fresh new artistic breath, a new pleasing color palette, a new composition. This game is so packed with these stunning moments. It’s a tour-de-force of environment art…It makes me so happy to look at.
Overall Conclusion: The Witness is a landmark game for the puzzle genre, and for any visual medium at large. It is challenging, enchanting, and full of cognitive surprises and discoveries. It is an immersive and captivating experience unlike anything I’ve played before. Even if you don’t have the patience for puzzle games, I still recommend playing it through with a guide, if only to experience the craftsmanship. This is a strong game, with strong design, and strong art. The Witness is a High Recommend from me!

Typical Jon Blow. Really good stuff. He explored the concept to its ends really, and this island will now exist for eternity with its coherence and beauty. He must be proud !
For people like me : motion sickness annoyed me a little but not too much either.

So here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to tell you what The Witness is not, and maybe by the end of this you'll have a reasonable idea of what to expect.
The Witness is not Sokoban. Sokoban is a puzzle game with no art or narrative, and it's only about pushing boxes around to solve the puzzles you're given. The Witness isn't just about solving puzzles.
The Witness is not The Talos Principle or The Turing Test. The Talos Principle and The Turing Test are both puzzle games with philosophical narratives, but they're built around generic puzzle elements like connecting lasers and moving boxes around. The Witness doesn't build itself on generic puzzle elements.
The Witness is not Pretentious Game. Pretentious Game is a puzzle game explicitly about connecting what you do in the game to a theme, if admittedly in a self-aware fashion. The Witness won't tell you what it's about.
The Witness is not Portal. Portal is a puzzle game designed to guide you towards eureka moments, to make you feel smart for solving its puzzles. The Witness doesn't guide you towards eureka moments, and often times you'll probably feel pretty stupid when you solve puzzles instead.
The Witness is not accessible. I'm not joking when I say that if you want to finish this game, you'll need to be in full possession of all your faculties. You need to be able to see properly. You need to be able to hear properly. You need to be able to move properly. Not least of all, you need to be able to think properly.
Finally, The Witness is not a puzzle game. It's not about solving puzzles. Solving puzzles just happens to be how you interact with it.

So first, the graphics and scenery is gorgeous and reminiscent of Eastshade. A gorgeous walking puzzle sim. This is what I primarily got the game for, to explore and see it.
If this is why you got this game, be warned. The puzzles are hard. Plus the huge amount of theological and secular philosophy is a bit too much and too.. random. I get this game is suppose to be some grand spiritual journey sort of deal, but seriously, it comes off as too much. Like the dev really wanted you to see how intellectual and WOKE he can be. And hey, if you play you can feel super woke too.
Don't get me wrong, it isn't BAD just... too on the nose, too in your face. Also would have liked an in-universe explanation to the island and stuff found there, but oh well on that. It is like.. story exists visually but you have to use your imagination to develop your own story.. which feels like lazy writing rather than an attempt at additional intellectual discovery or whatever.
If you want a dang gorgeous game, no combat and insane puzzles (some of which are rather repetitive even if they are technically different patterns), then this game is for you.
And for the walkthrough people, learn a little of the puzzle mechanics... while 99% of the puzzles are set and thus can be put in a walkthrough, 2 required puzzles, and a bunch more optional ones, are at the end of the game that are auto-generating.

But beyond the puzzles, the world is just incredibly beautiful. I've found myself walking around in The Witness not really looking for anything, just appreciating the place. That plus the philosophical tidbits left on recorders in the environment make it so that you're enjoying the game even when not solving puzzles.
Finally, this is one of the few games I find myself periodically replaying. It's best of course if you give yourself time to forget it all, but something about the puzzle interface (and particularly the environmental puzzles) is just so satisfying that I've fired it up more frequently just to go through the motions.
For me, this is one of the greatest games of all time.

It's hard to decide whether or not to recommend this game. On the one hand, this game has a lot of great puzzles that will really make you think. Without spoiling too much, the game is built around epiphany. The moment where you understand how a puzzle works or what the solution is, that's a great feeling. When you can't figure out the rules of a puzzle, though, it's incredibly frustrating. Given the variety of puzzles in this game, I can almost guarantee you will hit some puzzle that's incredibly frustrating to you.
While that variety can create frustration, it's also one of the game's greatest strengths. It ties into the game's themes and allows for some really complex puzzles. It keeps the line puzzles fresh, for the most part. It is genuinely surprising how much mileage they were able to get out of something that starts so simple.
That said, some of the puzzle types are pretty terrible from an accessibility standpoint. If you're color-blind or deaf, there are a number of puzzles that you'd either have to brute force or look up the solution. There's a few puzzles that feel like they're unfair, requiring you to pick through subtle, obtuse clues to solve them. Even if you can get over that, the game has a larger problem still. The game is designed to annoy you and waste your time.
There are so many things in this game that move slow as hell for no reason. There are puzzles that seem designed to frustrate you. There's a set of puzzles that wasn't difficult to solve, but did give me a bit of motion sickness. Despite the store page's claims to the contrary, there are absolutely filler puzzles that don't introduce any new ideas. Most egregious of all, there's a puzzle which takes over 50 real life minutes to complete, even when you know the solution (though admittedly, you probably won't even find it unless you're trying for 100% completion).
This game also bears the distinction of being one of the only games to ever give me issues with motion sickness. I don't know if this is a common thing, since I don't see it mentioned in any of the other reviews, but if you're struggling with it I've found turning on the reticle helps. It's also a really pretentious game, which might not bother some people but every time I play it I feel like the game is talking down to me.
This game is a mixed bag. I guess I recommend it? The core gameplay is really solid, there are just so many little things that bother me about it. This game is fun but it also makes me really mad, and I think that's intended. If you're into puzzles, and you can tolerate pretentious stuff and stuff that wastes your time, you'll probably enjoy this game.

Puzzles are my thing. I am always solving puzzles.
And when I am not I am writing code solving complex problems and debugging them.
Not only was this one of the most gorgeously designed worlds, with just the right level of detail (no need to get hype-realistic), but the game teaches you how to solve the puzzles and teaches you a lot about your way of thinking when solving them. For one I noticed once more that I can get myopic towards a solution. Trying to force the solution while not considering something else that in hindsight was clearly visible as a hint to the solution.
Jonathan Blow is an absolute genius when it comes to designing puzzles. They have the right level of difficulty and some of them are mindblowingly clever.
I'm sure once I have completed 100% (just finished after 46Hrs of play, but I still have lots of loose ends) I will do the whole thing once more from scratch. Not many puzzle games that get me to do that.

Well the Witness is a very open puzzle game. After a few tutorial puzzles you have access to a whole island with all sorts of different types of puzzles all at ones. There are some puzzles that require solving previous puzzles but basically you have a large portion of the game available from the getgo. And there are many different ideas and styles in this game, some you will find easier to understand and some you might find very frustrating. Some puzzles that will maybe take you very long and you will get stuck on. But the game teaches you very early on that its ok to just leave puzzles sometimes and go somewhere else. Find out new perspectives or just free up your mind and approach previous problems with a clear head. I think this work perfectly for puzzle games, at least in my experience with this game and I think this whole gaming experience game me a new perspective that I have never gotten from any other game.
Now you might say that this also can be achieved by just using a menu screen instead of a big island. In this menu you can just choose all the puzzles at once as well. But I think you lose something very precious when you remove the island from the Witness. By giving your puzzle a physical location on a map you give it some character which will make it more memorable, especially when you are stuck and have to go back to it. Plus the extra walking may give you needed time to breath and think about some puzzles you are struggling with (the visuals of course help with that as well).
Overall I have to say that the Witness is one of the best puzzle games I have ever played, especially in the way it is presented. The vast amount of different styles incorporated into this game makes it very probable that there will be puzzle ideas that you will like and enjoy to solve. Of course there will be some you will not, but I also dont think the game expect you to solve everything it has to offer, at least it is not designed in that way.

There are no written guidelines, the game tries to teach you new rules in regions by first giving you simple puzzles with the new puzzle elements. Also most of the UI and world elements to interact with are done through (usually easy) puzzles. This is an interesting approach, but sometimes it's easy to miss a detail about the rule which can frustrate further on in the next puzzles. Even if you perfectly understand everything, you will get stuck on weird puzzles at times.
An example, at some point there was a puzzle you had to solve by listening to your footsteps. This game does not have much going on sound-wise, only regular nature ambiance sounds (some wind, leaves rustling, water flowing, ...) which got boring for me. So after a while I played my own music, which of course made it impossible for me to solve that puzzle. You could say it's my own fault, but a hint or heads up would've been welcome.
Which brings up another point that the game is very unforgiving, if you get stuck the only option is to go away for a while and come back later trying to find a new perspective.
Regarding the world and story, there are many hints something happened, but that's the only thing you get. That and some philosophical quotes sprinkled around. This game is more positioned as art it seems, inviting you to fill in your own story you think happened. That might be fine for some people, but after 20 hours of puzzles it seemed disappointing to me (although I was not surprised).
All in all I mostly enjoyed the experience, but I can't recommend it unless you enjoy frustrating puzzles which will make you feel like an idiot (but also like a genius once you solve it) and bring-your-own-plot.

Outside of the game's focus, its sheer density of puzzles, other problems rear their heads. It's very possible to go through the 'tutorial' screens of a new puzzle element without actually learning what the rule is; even the ability to reset these initial screens to practice and experiment would be a huge boon. If you don't perceive colours or sounds in the same way as Jonathan Blow, you have an extra layer of difficulty to dig through.
There's a lot to love in the witness, and it strung me along for eight hours, but ultimately the frustration outweighed the enjoyment for me and I regret spending money on it.

A wonderful experience that babysits you in the beginning before throwing you to the wolves. If a puzzle doesn't make sense, close the game and come back to it. Or go explore somewhere else to find a new puzzle. Either way, take a deep breath, be proud of what your little brain has accomplished, and have fun with it. It's a very zen world and is meant to be satisfying.

You explore an open world solving over 400 puzzles with many interesting mechanics in any order you desire.
Finishing every puzzle on your own is extremely difficult; this game will push everyone to their wits end, but it feels good to succeed.
That said, it's not perfect. There's a handful of puzzles or events(really just a few) which are way too vague even if you've solved everything else in the game, or there's way too many options, making you waste lots of time over terrible direction, which gets seriously frustrating.
The standard ending was very weak and the alternative is too obscure, including randomized puzzles with a tight time constraint.
Still, The Witness is unique and absolutely worth experiencing.

Must have for puzzle lovers.
But I suggest you: try it first and see if it's your type of the game (and use steam refund if needed). Because there are a lot of puzzles, and you literally will go from one in-game screen to another almost all the time. 30+ hours of puzzles, and those are not for relaxation. Don't forget your pen & paper.
If you open to challenge and stubborn (or just smart, haha), the game won't disappoint you — it's a masterpiece.

There are a lot (over 530?) of puzzles in this game. Playing this without a guide or hints can be very stressful. I'm bringing this up because this game is extremely detail oriented and it's easy to lose yourself in the various patterns, colors, shapes, sounds, etc. that will show up as you're walking around solving puzzles. The environment is breathtaking and clever--but it can also be easily ignored once you realize that there are many secrets hidden in plain sight. If you think something looks awfully suspicious, chances are that it's something, and pursuing that line of thought can make you disregard soaking in the atmosphere. Be sure to pace yourself while playing this game, and remember to rest your eyes too, because it is very easy to lose hours working on solving puzzles, and the color palette ranges from bright and vivid to dark and dull.
TLDR: If you love puzzles, want a challenge, or maybe you just love the small details and want to connect the dots, get this game. Remember to take breaks while playing, for the sake of digesting puzzles you're stumped on and to rest your eyes.

I can't finish the game, not because of the difficulty of the puzzles but because the game mechanics towards the end render it unplayable for me.
BUT there's huge accessibility issues. There's the puzzles that rely upon colour with no colourblind mode. There's ones that rely on being able to hear the pitch of sounds with no alternative for those who have issues hearing. Then to make matters even more frustrating it then adds other sounds into the mix which are difficult to distinguish from each other. And no hints.
And then there's the very end of the game. The puzzles have flashing, strobing lights that gave me headaches and nausea. Some puzzles spun around as I tried to move the mouse again making me feel sick and requiring a degree of precision I just don't have. The game stopped being fun and instead became gruelling.
I know I'm really close to the end but with the way the puzzles at the end are crafted there's no way I'll be able to finish the game. And I'm so upset about that. Upset that after 30 hours in everything I loved about the game and the puzzles is gone.

The Witness, otoh, seems to have run out of creative ideas for fun puzzles about halfway through. And I don't mean the puzzles are 'too hard' or 'kinda obtuse'. I can recognise when I'm supposed to be able to solve the puzzle but am just too dumb for it, and will come back later. Likewise with puzzles that I don't 'get', no harm in those it's all in good fun. No, I mean The Witness has puzzles that exist just to be a huge dick to the player; examples include playing music that you're supposed to decipher and then running garbage noise over the top of it; garbling the screen of the puzzle so it's difficult to control; and quizzing players on colour mixing (if I have to alt-tab out to learn about it, the game has failed at teaching). Just some examples.
Throughout the game there's also all these audio logs; I'd assumed they where connected, as they started out talking about god and religion a lot. I was happy to wonder where they where going with this, was the island some sort of allegory for purgatory? Unfortunately not, as the quotes quickly started to diverge, and became rambling snippets of philosophy bereft of all context. It became apparent that they're a huge grab-bag of random things that scraped from the public domain, voice-acted and slapped into the game to give it a veneer of depth. Yikes.
Game feels like a swing-and-a-miss to me, it tried to be something better than what it was. There's a lot more puzzles left to solve for some sort of hard-mode super-secret ending thing, but frankly I'm so soured on the main experience that I have no heart for it, and can't recommend the game.

Unlike Portal, most of the environment begins open. You can go easily from section to section of the Island.
You will likely spend hundreds of hours in the game, so it is well worth the investment.
It is a mix of pure logical puzzles with environment playing a role and you need to sometimes use visual and auditory reasoning / clues. There is no hidden special click sequence (not that I'm aware of) or special mechanics to do stuff, like jumping here and there boosting, etc, which I find actually good. It is your mind and your senses alone.
Some puzzles, actually many of them, will seem very frustrating, because you still don't quite get the rules, you have hypothesis, approximating notions of the mechanics of such and such symbols, but believe me ALL of them have very clear sharp rules and make sense, there is no double meaning of rules.
The point of the game is helping you just enough to get the rules and make you explore, so it aims to make YOU stop and think, organize, analyze, recall places, puzzles. It doesn't spoon-feed you anything.
Graphics are very playable at max and enjoyable, it is a rich, colorful and neat island with beautiful layout that you never get tired off. No music, just environment sounds.
