PS: Die angezeigte Spielzeit is natürlich Bullshit.

The begin was great, the controls and stuff work out well. Graphics are fine and the world looks beautiful. Although the experience turned around pretty quick.
Womans are being reduced to objects, that was a big design issue in the third part and i simply hate it. In this exaggerated manner its getting annoying and tedious.
Furthermore side quests are mostly dull fetch quests and the markers are often not helpful with proceeding missions.
The whole series is pretty overhyped by fanboys that got no solid standart in this genre.

Information

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut ist ein Rollenspiel, welches von CD Projekt Red entwickelt wurde.

Gameplay

Kontra

- immer noch kleinere Bugs im Umlauf

Fazit

The Witcher bietet dir erzählerisch interessante Fantasy für Erwachsene! Klare Kaufempfehlung.

If you like older RPGs and the Witcher lore / universe, you are probably going to like the grim atmosphere, conflicts, themes and art design of this game. It's worth it to push through the prologue then which is by far the worst part of the game. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time in swamp, city and sewer tilesets.

For everyone else, this game has aged rather poorly - cinematography, visuals, voice acting, controls, combat, technical issues, inventory management - and you are probably better off going into Witcher 2 and 3.

+ mild weird combat mechanics on the beginning. it won't take long till you can get used to it.
+ great story (thanks for the novels too (it still great if you haven't read them)
+ many fun side quest happening.
+ great monster and enemies
+ bosses are fairly easy (tho it might easily beat you if you're not handling it carefully)
+ great character and dialogue
+ some philosophical stuff happening on the game. (hard decision here and there, tho it probably still preventable)

My Rate: 8 / 10

definitely give it a try ( tho lower your expectation if you already played the 3rd one. it's 2007 game fyi so not great ui here and there)

If you enjoy RPG games with a good fantasy story, detailed lore and interesting characters, you'll have a blast with this game. Unfortunately the game lacks in fighting department, but this type of point-and-click fights were very common during the 2000s, so you should be aware of what you get into.

The graphics were beautiful, especially in the environment, the character models and textures were lacking. There were a few interesting choices with animation, like the boob physics for females, especially Triss at the start. The painting styled artworks at certain story points were beautiful, but the sex cards, that you get from banging all the ladies you can find, were a little weird, although very pretty looking.

Soundtrack was absolutely fantastic, and I really enjoyed traversing the lands of Temeria while listening to the music playing in the background. Especially appreciated the detail that when the time of day changed to night also the soundtrack changed. Continuing with the sound department, Voice acting was... lacking. The reactions of characters were mostly very monotone and felt like everyone was absolutely bored out of their minds when anything remotely exciting happened lol.

I adored the dice poker though, such a fun minigame.

I did a replay in 2017 to export a 'personalized' save for Witcher 2/3, but I guess I didn't do it on Steam with screenshots and all, thereby not 'officially enough', so here we are : )

CD Projekt has a long history of releasing unfinished games, and this was no different in 2007. Witcher I uses the tried-and-true Aurora engine of Neverwinter Nights fame, so the numerous bugs in the pre-Enhanced Edition weren't really of the 'fall through the floor, crash to desktop' kind. There were unfinishable quests, scripted events that wouldn't trigger if you did things in a 'bad' order, etc. When the EE dropped, 99% of the bugs were gone, there was voice-acting in something like nine languages, and loading time issues were gone.

Mods I used:

- https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher/mods/256 - there are a lot of mailman quests, and being a quick runner helps. It's a bit of a cheat since you can outmanoeuvre enemies far too well, but I don't mind cheating. WeMod has good support for Witcher I, btw.

- https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher/mods/657 - they say there's a part of a quest missing, and this mod restores it.

- https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher/mods/659 - make Leuvaarden buy an infinite amount of Salamandra badges off you.

- https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher/mods/688 - I wasn't particularly impressed with dice poker, so this helped me get on with it.

I used this wiki not to miss anything: https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/The_Witcher_quests

A classic, to be sure.

I originally played this prior to the release of the Witcher 3 back in 2013 and it was a difficult game, that had difficult controls. Without having any context to the world of the Witcher it was still something I began to enjoy the story with and started to love Geralt as a character. I never finished the game and ignorantly just wrote it off for a while as a meh trilogy. I played the Witcher 3 after its initial popularity died before this great resurgence of love its getting, I loved the game so much I own it on the PC, 2 versions of the PS4, and the Nintendo Switch version. I cant get enough of the world of the Witcher! I've read maybe 5 of the books in order and they are AMAZING! (I have the audio books as I'm kind of a slower reader with the hope to get the entirety of their story) SEASON 2 just released yesterday and it follows those books with a few extra liberties (that are still good). I wanted more and still have these first 2 games to actually play....and its so awesome to see the story I love has been here for a while and just waiting for me to jump in. IF YOU LOVE THE WITCHER LORE GET THIS GAME! It is clunky to play but it is the story after the books and has the ability to carry over choices from the first game to the second...and the second to the third. I'm currently playing this on a failry cheap laptop with no graphics card and it handles just fine. Witcher fans.....GET THIS GAME show CDPR that there is a demand for this game. Hopefully we get a re-release with better controls and quality of life changes.

For a game that was made in 2007, it's pretty good. For a game that is based on the book series, it's a-must-play for any fan of the franchise <3 Be patient with combat. You will be able to get pretty awesome power-ups for sword fighting, alchemy & signs as you progress. This is a story-heavy game so, if you like games such as Telltale's The Walking Dead, Life is Strange or The Wolf Among Us, you're ought to enjoy this one too.

Ok, I like this game.

First, if you play this game, don't expect a AAA experience; you wont find it here, even by 2008 standards. You also find that good voice acting in this game is scarce, but the voice acting is overall passable. Combat will feel wonky when you start playing, but one you get used to it, it will feel pretty good, to the point where you may actually prefer it over Witcher 2's combat (I know I do). Unlike the Witcher 2, this game doesn't feel watered down because consoles; this was a PC only game and this was all CD PROJEKT could muster at the time. The first chapter will feel pretty mediocre (although you wont be there long) until the end of it and the swamps in the second chapter will make you want to stop playing (and you will be there a while and you'll be there several times), but other than that, the game's areas are pretty good. In particular, I liked Chapter 4's areas the most. Game graphics are both good and bad; environments and some character models are well done, while others just straight up look cursed. This game can go for less than £1 on sale, so there is no way that I would say that this game isn't worth it; because it is worth it. It also sets Witcher 2 up well and potentially nets you some slightly better equipment for starting that game, which is useful if you play the Witcher franchise on the hardest difficulties (Hard, Dark, Death March!). Oh, and make sure you stock up on Swallow in this game; it's kind of essential.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s cut physically hurt me to play.

What do I mean? Simple. The combat it AWFUL. And you have to do a lot of fighting. Story wise its got a lot of lore if you really want to dig in for that then by all means, go right ahead. But for me the game was just so stale. I got Witcher 3 and I said I was going to play the first 2 game before I played the 3rd one. I could not finish this game, it felt more like a chore that something to pass the time and enjoy.

While im not one to nit-pick about how a game looks and im more concerned about how it plays, it plays like trash and looks like it too. Geralt look like a butt. Its not nice to look at or play IMO but if you play for the story, good luck.

My verdict, don’t buy. Watch a 3 hour long “Movie” of the game and call it a day if you really want the story.

Beautiful classic RPG with fairytale story vibes. The controls are a bit awkward but I got used to it easily. In some areas it's hard to find a path around obstacles, but if you switch the camera mode to F2, you can easily click to where you want to go. Good replay value, since a lot of choices affect the story and how other characters engage with you. You can beat the whole game in 30 - 40 hours. You can use your save in the Witcher 2 to continue the story, your alliances, and some items carry over.

Apart from the primitive combat (2007 game) and random black screens, the first game is a must for any The WItcher fan as it has a better history/plot than probably witcher 2 or even 3 since it has a more serious witcher theme which arguably is missing in the next games.

This game is a rough diamond. It shows its age more than most games released in its period, but it overcompensates with personality.
The storytelling is excellent, and Vizima feels so lived in, every character has interconnections with others. Choices are really intricate and the characters feel real.
Exploring really pays off and you find interesting stuff hidden everywhere inside the city
I loved it the first time i played it and even more the second time.

The Witcher is a game that people seem to be pretty divided on. On one hand, it's a world filled with interesting lore and characters, choices that truly do matter, affecting how your game plays out. On the other hand, it's an experience that overstays its welcome where a lot of the quests feel like padding to make the game longer, some pretty bad voice acting across the board and rapid changes in difficulty. I still recommend you check this one out (preferably on sale), there's a really great story mixed into the stuff that drags the game down. You'll need to devote a lot of hours to The Witcher, but if you're a fan of high fantasy RPGS that shouldn't be a problem.

Let me preface this by saying its the first witcher game i've played.

I went into this game with an open mind, dismissing the criticisms of the game's combat and other features being 'out dated' like I typically do with any other game. The most common critique even positive reviews give of this game is that many mechanics are 'dated'. I do not consider the problems of this game to be a consequences of age, 2007 wasn't that long ago and there are plenty of games from that period that do not share many of my problems with this game. It mostly comes down to poor design.

Pros
I will say the story of the game is great and the characters are generally appealing, even in its very gritty world where most people are ass holes. The graphics in my opinion hold up nicely besides some bad animations for a few things. My main issues with the game are combat and just how slow it is to do everything.

Cons
Combat is not hard, its just lame. All it comes down to is using your abilities and clicking at the right time. The biggest issue I had with this game is just how much 'busywork' there was and this was with me skipping most of the hunting side-quests. The maps are big and look cool, but the result is a ridiculous amount of back and forth. The first real area of the game has maybe 5 noteworthy NPCs and they are conveniently all on opposite sides of the map from each other. The game also forces you to find specific camp-fires or NPCs to rest and pass time, which wouldn't be a problem if not for the fact that almost every other quest in the game is limited to certain times of the day (meet me in the evening). I spent so much time either running in circles backtracking, or running back to the one campfire in the town it made me want to hang myself.

Overall as a new player I wouldn't suggest you play this, it has some redeeming qualities but you're better of reading some wiki summaries of the decisions you can make and of how the story goes. I'm looking forward to playing 2 and 3 as from what i've read they fixed many of my issues.

Great start to The Witcher saga. You start to play game and disconnect from real life. After 5-10 hours you are in the Witcher's world.

Witcher's world and story not like the others. Not a fairytale or heroic adventures. This world is full of wars between kingdoms, betrayals, lies and more...

Story is great. As you progress through the story you wonder what will happen next. Really, your choices can change the story. Characters are good too. Geralt is one of my favorite game characters.

But the most important thing sucks. Combat System. I played nearly 35 hours and still can't understand how does it work. A remake could be great for who wants to play in 2021.

Still, I really need to replay this game and get invested in The Witcher Series.

Get a Graphic Overhaul mode, and play the game that started a saga, and shaped The Witcher Series as one of the best games of the 2000 years.

This game has not aged well at all, but the story is, without a doubt, amazing and fully enjoyable and is the real winner all this time later. Graphics-wise it's certainly not the worse but not great either, the real downfall is solely on the outdated mechanics which most people especially newcomers to the series are simply going to hate. But after all, it is almost 14 years old so it's understandable at the same time.

The game requires a lot of modding to play without losing sanity, but it can be a good time. Many characters and cards from Gwent come from this game, so if your a lore buff it may be required playing. Also if your gonna play max out the Igni spell. With proper investment it makes the game a joke. Unless you absolutely NEED to see how Witcher began, I'd probably just check out a recap video on YouTube.

BE WARNED: Save often. The game can get into these weird fits where it will decide to crash all the time. I think it has something to do with the optimization.

What the Witcher 1 lacks in graphics, gameplay and sheer playability, it more than makes up for by the amazing plot it carries.

A few mods make the gameplay more bearable like enhanced combat, speed up geralt's speed, win every round of dice (personal favourite)

This game has a lot of stuff you'd expect in a Witcher game-
Witcher-hating villagers? Check.
Scoiatael that look like they have squirrel faeces on their face? Check.
Hookers that look more like Triss than Triss herself? Check.
Double-faced knights? Check.
Thaler's endless swearing? Check.

Add gwent and it might just surpass TW3.

There are parts that are truly a slog, running back and forth for hours and hours, but there are many things that make playing it all the way through worthwhile. I won't say this is a great game, and it is not for everyone, but I did enjoy it all the way to the end.

For a 2007 game, the battle animations are quite impressive. Somehow I kinda enjoy the battle mechanic, even though it feels clunky at some of the times remembering this is an old game, pretty much acceptable.

The plots are a bit slow, which makes me feel bored at the beginning. You need to spare some times to get yourself into it.

To say the least, if you want to feel a better gameplay of the witcher's lore, go for The Witcher 3 instead. But it's OK if you 'd like to taste the predecessor as well, not a sin at all.

in this review , i'll try to talk exclusively about this specific game and not mix it with the other 2.

If you're on those few worthy human beings who prefer to play older games then i highly recommend you to play Witcher Enhanced edition , below i will list what i like and dislike about this game :
- To be honest the graphics are pretty good for a fairly massive RPG like this released in 2007.
- Very good voice acting and dialogue syncing with characters.
- Magnificent and addicting story , CDPR did a great job turning such a masterpiece of a book into a video game unlike what Netflix did with the Witcher series.
- Decision making that sometimes can feel harder than deciding for your own life.
- Tons of quests.
- Tons of unique interactable NPCs.
- good character customization and progression system.
- The combat is very simple in this game can be somehow annoying for the first few hours until you're patient enough to get used to it , but definitely not something i like about this game however the sword techniques are on-point and are exactly something i've imagined when i was reading the books.
- Lots of attractive female NPCs also unlike the Netflix Witcher lol.
- I haven't tried easier difficulties but it can be pretty damn hard on max difficulty settings.

So overall , a great masterpiece for it's time even for today just like the other two titles and if you're a fan of Witcher universe , it's a MUST play.

Overall a fun experience!! Albeit awkward.

I jumped in thinking that it might be good to experience The First before I play The Third;
at the same time expecting that it's just another RPG with nice graphics and storyline.

Lmao I was wrong. The mechanic, the camera work, was awkward.
The battle mechanic reminds me of Legend of Dragoon in PS 1 lmaooo those timing-based combos.
Motions were often funny and the camera often capture characters overlaid by plants/zoomed too close/weird framing (even in dire moments). It was a good comedy throughout the game.
Well I wasn't entirely wrong. I liked the concept of time, meditation, and alchemy though!
Especially the time, it makes the neighborhood feel alive. Collecting romance cards was a nice touch too.

Narrative was great and enjoyable. It gave a nice intro of the universe, the politics, who Geralt was, his friends, his foes, as well as his vision (even the lore of Ciri). Characters and quests have their charm points, there were some that really grew on me (Dandelion! Vincent and Carmen! Even Siegfried).

Although people tend to skip out the 1st and 2nd game, I feel it's an important stepping stone.
Thanks for the game. I'm excited to take on Witcher 2 and ultimately Witcher 3.

If you’re coming here from Witcher 3 don’t set your expectations too high. (I played Witcher 3 before this)
The remarkable thing about this game and the Witcher genre is the Quest system. The quests are very fun to complete. The story is ok, it’s nothing too special. But for some reason though the Characters are quite memorable. The Progression system is good.
The game can be a bit buggy and can even crash sometimes. The controls are weird so you will need some time to get used to it. Sometimes the bosses can be very hard to beat if not prepared (especially in the beginning)
One tip: Potions are crucial!!!
Summary: Get it when it’s on discount.

This game got me reading the books, purchasing all the other games, and watching the series. In short, I would DIE for this game.

- the combat style is pretty easy to get used to, also midway through the game you might want to grind a bit to level up Geralt for more talent points
- the game looks great considering how old it is
- the music and the story is great
- runs perfectly on early 2015 macbook air??

If you liked Witcher 3 and wants to play previous games, don't you dare skip this game

Don't judge it by its graphics (for others, the graphics suck, for me, it's alright) and its outdated timing based combat system (i hated the combat at first, then it becomes tolerable then it becomes enjoyable, it's not that bad, Geralt's sword swinging for steel and silver is actually looks sick, especially in late game)

But the cream of the crop here is the story, it's really good, play it and see for yourself

I‘ve bought The Witcher 3 some years ago and this game showed up in addition in my steam library.
So first of all I can say it’s worth it’s price. What a surprise.
I played the Witcher 3 and f***in‘ loved it. After that I wanted more of Geralt. So I watched videos of Witcher 1 and it didn’t look good in terms of its graphics and its gameplay. I also tried it for around half an hour and didn’t like it cause of the really clunky combat system. So I just watched a summary of the story and played The Witcher 2 instead (it’s a very good game too).

But after two years (now) I decided to give it another chance.
First of all I played it heavily modded. Whithout modding it’s unplayable for me. But with mods the graphics are not so bad anymore, the UI looks a lot better and it’s really easy to mod this game. And the most important mod: Faster Movement. Without this mod Geralt would lose the 100m against a snail. And you walk a lot in this game.
After installing all mods I played it and still didn’t liked the combat system. But I can say, you’ll get used to it and after some hours it’s not so bad anymore (but it’ll never be „good“ the whole game). The inventory system is crap as well. The romances aren’t aged well (or in other words - the card system is crap too).
But the other parts of the game are really good. The story, dialogues and characters are well written with some great plot twists (you feel that some conversations are maybe not so fluently as in more modern games but it’s ok). And the Open-World areas are well done too. You’ll get to know the areas where you are in the different chapters and can easily walk around w/o the minimap after some time. You care about the other chars and the decisions have a huge impact on the storyline.

So is it as great as its successors? The hell no. But is it a good game? Of course yes.
I would rate it with a 8.3 out of 10.

This first game of The Witcher Trilogy has a great story and wonderful ambiance. The combat mechanics are a little bit frustrating but if you can get used to it, you won't regret for spending your time in it.

The Witcher je skratka úžasná hra. RPG + príbeh, čo viac chcieť. Na svoju dobu čo sa týka grafiky je celkom dobrá, prostredie fajn, atmosféra, takisto príbeh vynikajúci, strašne som si ho užil, i keď miestami sa mi zdalo, že ten príbeh dajak naťahujú príliš zbytočne. Postavy veľmi dobré napísane aj zvýraznené, časom si ich budete dobre pamätať. Niektoré konverzácie, nehovorím všetky, s NPC-čkami ma nudili, zbytočne obkecávačky, nezažívne, mal som to chuť skipovať, veď si spravte vlastný názor keď budete hrať.

A perfect beginning of The Witcher games series and perfect continuation of the book series. Game feels much more rewarding when played after finishing the books because it has so many cool references to it and truly feels like the sequel fans deserve after finishing the books. True, game feels inferior to second and third games when it comes to graphics and gameplay mechanics but story, characters, RPG elements are spectacular in this one as well. Hope this jewel will get remastered one day.
P.S. After finishing the game, a short story - The Price of Neutrality is a must play for true fans.

I know that i have invested a great deal of time into this game, since i wanted to see it through to the end, but i'm afraid that the first of the Witcher games harbours many qualities that made it a slough to play through rather than an enjoyment.

The game's real drawing power comes from both the setting and the story. By now, everyone slightly familiar with gaming knows the Witcher and the setting surrounding it. Well, the first game does an excellent job of portraying it. It's easy to be immersed into the universe, and you feel like you're Geralt of Rivia, rather than playing as him. The story is good, albeit a little slow in the beginning. It is only at the end of chapter 3 that it really picks up.

Mediocrity can be found in its mechanics and audio. The day-night system, while a nice addition to the immersion, often serves only to waste your time. Alchemy and Leveling can not be done on the fly, which i feel is a relic that has been done away with in the current day (except for Dark Souls, but that game uses it as a core mechanic). The entire game sounds good, apart from the voice-acting. That bit is absolutely abysmal (except for Geralt and Triss).

The worst part, and definitely a huge turn-off for me, is the gameplay. I have never seen a combat system like the one used in this game, and there is probably a very good reason for it. It is really boring to play with. I'm glad they did away with it in the other games. Secondly is the god-awful inventory management. Everytime you see a merchant, you better sell as much stuff as you can, or your inventory will be filled to the brim before you know it, forcing you into the exciting world of inventory management. It slows the entire game down, and serves no purpose other than to be a nuisance. Travelling is an absolute bother. The game has everything spread out too far from one another. Questlines often send you from point A to B to A to C to B to A... you get the drift. By the way, no Roach, meaning you have to suffer Geralt's snail's pace all the way through. No autorun either, so you'll be stuck pressing that forward-button for the better part of the game.

Final verdict is a 6/10, which is on the edge of a positive/negative review balance. Many people say you'll complete this in 40 hours, but i needed twice as much for some reason. At least it's over and i have my own save that i can import in the Witcher 2 now.

So many people told me to not play it and I'm glad I ignored them. Very fun and exciting game! I played unmodded. The mechanics were a little bit confusing/clunky for like the first 30 mins, but it was pretty easy to get comfortable with pretty fast. I never have an issue with older games. None of the combat was ever too complicated, I really liked seeing how my decisions impacted the game's outcome. The world feels extremely alive and I felt a connection with all the characters, the immersion was awesome. The game did crash 3 times for me, once in Chapter III in the Swamp, once in Chapter V in an area where there was a lot of people fighting each other, and once after loading the game in Epilogue. Make sure to save OFTEN just in case. Overall really happy I played, despite everyone telling me not to. If you are curious about it, I say PLAY IT!!

I have played this game like 3 times in my life already, but I keep coming back to it. It's graphic is kinda outdated nowadays, but the story beats every other game I have ever played. During your playthrough you often need to make decisions, that will completely change the outcome of the story. The decisions often test your morality, it makes you face hard decisions. You must face both the good and bad consequences of your decisions, leaving you in a chaos of thoughts. The game design and the atmosphere is like walking inside a piece of art. The colors, sounds, effects are all in a beautiful sync.
Of all the Witcher games, I believe this one is the best at story and atmosphere. Even just walking around, you feel completely part of this world.
The graphics were great when the game came out. Nowadays, it is not that good. It is not terrible, but quite obvious.
My favourite, most life-changing game even in 2020! :)

Don't listen to people saying to skip this game. Its a little flawed in comparison to the others, and the combats ass but you quickly get used to it. it has tons of charm and the quest lines and characters are great. Its really fun overall. I recommend playing this one first if you haven't played any witcher games before. Dont skip its actually a gem in my worthless and skewed opinion. I rate it 12 thumbs up so theres that.

I first bought The Witcher 3, but couldn't play that as I wasn't aware who is who in the story? So I found some quick videos of The Witcher 1 and 2, but believe me those are not enough. Then on sale I bought 1 and 2 at the same time.

When I started to play 1, it felt so awkward with using mouse combat. But still I gave this game a try and I spent more than 5 hours unknowingly after immersing myself in the story. Then I played it more (currently 11+ hours), and I think I'll play it completely haha.

Really good game, play it for story and characters. Combat is somewhat good, just needs a bit practice initially.

I'm Geralt of Rivia..

Some games make the player ask questions about, morality, science or life itself.
This one makes you ask different kind questions, such as:

What the hell is going on?
What the fuck am I doing?
How the fuck do I complete this mission?
What was that button again?
So... who is this character?
How can I bang her?

Regardless: Still one of the best fantasy RPGs out there.

I bought all 3 Witcher games as part of a bundle, and played them chronologically with no previous experience with the series. Boy, am I glad I trudged through this.
While the gameplay is janky and graphics a little lackluster (by 2020 standards, I'm a spoiled bih), I remain impressed by the depth of the writing and how the choices you makes reflect on the npcs around you.
If you're going into the Witcher for story, highly recommend buying and playing, especially since it goes on sale so often. The Witcher is a rare series that gets exponentially better with each release, so I feel that having the knowledge of 1 going into 2 really helped elevate the experience. 3 stole my heart and refuses to give it back.

Would I play this game again?
Hell naw. But I'm glad I did it.

Initially it was difficult for me to enjoy this games, as I had already played 36 hours of Witcher 3 (sorry, not sorry), it was worth the play. Graphics are bearable, but the combat is weird, even annoying at times. However, the only thing which would keep you going is the rich plot and the numerous characters, which are knit together to seamlessly drive the story forward.

Pros - the plot, the background score and the education on the various characters, places, events and terms of the Witcher-verse.

Cons - Combat, lack of fast travel (too much time spent on travelling from, say, point A to point B), ability to allocate skill points or brew potions only at fireplaces. Also the game gets frustratingly difficult at some points (though one may play on a lower difficulty).

Overall, it a good experience and I would say one should play the game for the plot, if they wish to play the sequels.

Introduction:
IMPORTANT: The Steam version of this game is extremely unstable on modern hardware, hence my low playtime as I played the game through GOG which is a lot more stable.

I had previously dipped my toes in the second and third games of the series, but they didn't quite catch me as I was unacquainted with the first game. I decided to change that, and as I completed the game a couple days ago, here's a short but to-the-point review.

Good:
 • The world is quite immersive and feels very alive.
 • The game is quite impressive for a company the size CDPR was, and in my opinion it even beats Oblivion.
 • There's a fair amount of places to explore that are relevant to quests you might come across further into the game, making exploration feel worth it.
 • Great soundtrack, as The Witcher series has become well known for.
 • Graphics are very impressive for a game this old. It really has withstood the test of time.
 • People give this game criticism for its combat, but I actually prefer this system over the second game.
 • The game explained the mechanics really well, so I never had to resort to Google searches.
 • Does a good job of putting you in Geralt's shoes, at times making you second guess whether your choices were for the greater good.
 • I recommend enabling Show Object Names, as it makes interactable objects (and NPCs) have names above them from a distance.

Neutral:
 • The game is old and therefore only utilizes 1 CPU core efficiently, making framerates very unstable from area to area. I put this as Neutral because it's not the fault of the game, but of the technology available at the time.
 • The difficulty has a few unexpected spikes throughout the game.

Bad:
 • The Steam version is extremely unstable. I could not get past the tutorial until I switched to the GOG version of the game.
 • The inventory feels too small at times, and fills up relatively fast.
 • The quest objective markers are a lot of times inaccurate, and have you remembering details from conversations about NPCs' whereabouts.
 • The final bit of the skill tree requires Gold talent points, which I found to be lacking by the end of my playthrough.
 • Certain potions are overpowered to the point of making a seemingly impossible encounter into a walk in the park, with little middle ground if you choose to utilize them.
 • A lot of alchemy ingredients are borderline useless.
 • The weapon stats are extremely vague and difficult to make sense of. Some weapons will have -% damage dealt, some won't have any damage stated at all, and some will have a flat X-Y damage value attached to them. How do you even compare? I ended up sticking with weapons that had +% damage dealt, but the
Gwalhir
seemingly has a ridiculously low chance of hitting the target
 • Some enemies
(the mutants)
towards the end can be unclear whether they are weak to Steel or Silver.

Vanity over vanity and all is vanity. Geralt is not a hero, but an outcast, in a world that does not accept mutants.. but frankly, he does not accept humans either. The monsters will perform best in it, specifically the two-legged ones, without claws, teeth and conscience.
The ones that the right witcher shouldn't kill.

Although I was saving people, villages and the whole world, I was constantly greeted in the back of my head by the knowledge that nobody really didn't deserve to be saved, because he was a evil bastard, or he might not want to save, because his existence was nothing else anyway. than constant suffering, even if it is not eaten by a ghoul.

And it's not easy to build such a rough atmosphere. It is no wonder that one feels uncomfortable in a dilapidated sub-castle, where hellhounds appear every night, or in a city devastated by a plague epidemic. But she had exactly the same effect on me as the feverish sunny fields, which would be beautiful in another game. In the Witcher, rot emanates from them.

Of course, this is an ambitious project for its time and the possibilities of the company. It's actually a wonder what the CD Projekt was able to put together in the first game. At the same time, I'm glad that they weren't afraid to push the saw and moved the whole series to where it is today. Much further than 13 years ago. 65%

Should you still play the Witcher 1 in 2020?

That’s a fair question to ask, considering that this game is now 13 years old with its release in October 2007.

Cons

With a game that is 13 years old, it’s clear that its age will show in some aspects. One of these is the outdated graphics . (Especially if you play without any mods, like I did). Also, there aren't a lot of different character models for the NPC’s, so you will encounter a lot of clones. Personally, this didn’t bother me that much, but it may be distracting for some players.

The game has a slow start . In the beginning, you may find yourself annoyed by the point and click combat or the slow start to the story. But I will promise you, the game really does get better the further you get. After some time, I even found myself enjoying the combat, I just needed to get used to it.

The Navigation was a bit frustrating. It’s really annoying how often the direct way is blocked so you have to walk all the way around, even though you can already see your destination.

There is no fast traveling. During some parts of the game, you can teleport to certain locations, but that doesn’t change the fact that 40% of your play time will just be walking around from one place to another, which can feel a bit annoying at times, especially considering the amount of backtracking needed if you really want to finish all side quests and contracts.

Fighting feels very clunky. There is no active dodging, and if you get stunned when fighting more than two enemies, you can proceed to grab a cup of tea while watching said enemies slowly beat Geralt to death because no matter how frantically you press your keys, you will not get out of that situation.

There is no animation cancelling. Animations have to finish before you can start doing something else. After you drink a potion or eat something, Geralt has to stand still for the whole duration of the animation before you can move or drink another potion. This may be intended but feels unnatural and a bit clunky. Every normal person can move while drinking, especially while being chased by monsters. But our Geralt here is different. He likes to drink his potions in peace of mind, as if he has all the time in the world, not minding the monsters attacking him while doing so.

If you play on normal difficulty, the game will be too easy , especially later on. The only boss fight that felt challenging to me was the Chapter 1 boss fight, because I hadn’t levelled my Aard sign at all (note that with levelled Aard sign, it is also very easy). But the later boss fights, especially the final ones in Chapter 5 and the epilogue, are way too easy if you know how to use alchemy and signs. Because of that, I recommend playing the game on the hardest difficulty and not on normal difficulty.
Also, you can’t pick up loot during combat. The game makes you wait around 3 seconds after combat finishes before you are allowed to pick something up.

In conclusion , the negative points mostly concern the lack of convenience we are used to from newer games. Most of these points only caused me minor frustration and didn’t stop me from playing and enjoying the game.

Pros

It’s worth discovering how the story of the Witcher games started, because it’s a great, immersive story. For someone who read all the books and already played Witcher 3, it was a great experience to discover how the games continue to develop the story from the books.

The world . The world of the Witcher is grey and cruel, but it’s also rich in lovable and humorous characters and filled with a lot of lore to discover. Most characters are layered and have good reasons for their actions; almost no one is just evil for the sake of being evil but rather convinced that what they are doing is the right thing.

The choices you make affect the story. A lot of times, there are various outcomes to a quest based on your decisions. The world isn’t simply black and white. The developers stayed true to Andrzej Sapkowski’s notion of “Choosing the lesser evil” from the books. Even though the most canon choice is to stay neutral in the conflict presented in the game, it is up to the player if he wants to side with one of the two factions (Sco’iatel or Order of the Flaming Rose) or not.

The soundtrack : This game has one of the best video game soundtracks imo, the music helps creating an immersive atmosphere.

The levelling system : You can personalize the combat by putting skills in magic signs, alchemy, bombs or the different sword styles.

Combat tactics : I love the fact that you have be tactical in combat and that alchemy and signs actually matter. In order to deal damage, it is crucial to pick the right sword (silver for monsters and steel for humans), the right style and to use the right potions. You can’t just mindlessly slice through enemies

play time : There are a lot of things to do in the Witcher, there are a lot of side quests, contracts and trophies. If you don’t plan on rushing the main story, you have around 50 hours of content.

Price: I picked it up for like 1-2 Euro on sale, and the amount of content you get for the price is amazing.

Conclusion

The worst part of this game is definitely its controls and the general inconvenience, which may make it feel like a slog to some players. But if you manage to get used to that, it’s still a very good game with a great world and story. I recommend the game to everyone who isn't too bothered by aged controls and I think it's still worth your time to play this game in 2020.

“Evil is Evil. Lesser, greater, middling… Makes no difference. The degree is arbitrary. The definition’s blurred. If I’m to choose between one evil and another… I’d rather not choose at all.”
― Andrzej Sapkowski, The Last Wish

CD Projekt Red.

Read all the books before starting the trilogy and was really looking forward to playing this game.

However whilst the story may be great and really respectful of the lore and what came before it, the tedious gameplay and awful combat system broke me and I felt very fatigued by about chapter 3.

If you're willing to push through and want a great story that builds on the books I'd say go for it but otherwise I would recommend just watching a catch up video and starting at Witcher 2.

I believe in the sword.

Going back through my list of games, I realized that I hadn't given this game a review. How remiss of me! The original Witcher is a fine RPG indeed, and is often unfairly criticized - modern gamers coming back from the third installment (which is absolutely marvelous, I don't disagree) often find the original clunky and wooden. And there are certainly elements of it worthy of criticism. The dialogue is, shall we say, less than stellar. The voice acting is oftentimes cringeworthy. The environments are, very occasionally, irritating to navigate. And the weird collect sex cards of women Geralt has slept with feels really gross and unsettling.

But, when you look past these elements, the game is actually great fun! The plotline is really effective at sucking you in, and the side missions are generally very memorable! Despite the characters dialogue being written terribly a lot of the time, names and events still stick out as being memorable. So if you're looking for a morally gray RPG with a simple yet gripping plotline (the main story isn't very morally interesting a lot of the time - specifically the main antagonists, who are just regular old evil gangsters pretty much - but side quests or tangential elements of the main quest force you to make some genuinely tough and complex decisions.
Siding with the Elves or the Knights is a great way of making you pick between two extremes - or you sit back and watch them kill each other and no-one wins but you - maybe...
So the storytelling is really solid. The music is just gorgeous, and the environments, while occasionally irritating to navigate, is also extremely memorable. I can remember my way around most of the maps in my mind. The fourth chapter - the one in the farms - was perhaps my favourite. It was a realistic, sedate romp around a fantasy village, where you could stop and gamble, drink, and brawl!

So that brings me to the biggest criticism people usually level at the game - the combat. But I always found that was a strange complaint to level, because The Witcher has a novel combat system that rewards patience and timing. You switch between stances and click at the right time to continue your combo. It's a little unintuitive at first, but you just need to practice, and then you'll be a ballerina of death, pirouetting around the streets with a deadly sword. I was never a huge fan of The Witcher 3's combat personally - it felt floaty and oftentimes just too unresponsive. I found there was a genuine kind of feedback here whenever I whacked an enemy with my sharp metal stick.

So, The Witcher is an easy recommendation for those looking for a fantasy RPG to play in a sunny room or on a rainy day - it's the kind of time sink that rewards the time you spend with interesting plot situations and shiny new skills, weapons and loads and loads of cash. The combat takes a little learning, but when it clicks, I think this will be a game you'll have a hard time putting down - at least that's what it was for me.

This game, while dated in aesthetics and mechanics, provides a fantastically deep and complex experience if you're willing to have a bit of patience with it. A lot of people say they skip the first Witcher game because they can't get past the way it looks and its sometimes clunky plot exposition. But when you give it the benefit of the doubt, you will find an opportunity to engage with a demanding and challenging fantasy world that does not hold your hand or give you all the answers. Think critically about everyone and everything you interact with, and you just might find out what a real diamond in the rough CD Projekt Red have created here.

Highly recommend playing the first Witcher. It's different from the Witcher 3 but it is equally as fun. Playing the first Witcher does give you more insight into the events of Witcher 3. I would highly recommend playing the first Witcher for those who are interested in the lore and story. The combat may take some time getting used to in the beginning but after a while it becomes second nature.

TLDR- I would recommend this game to people who want to learn about the world and characters and are willing to overlook outdated design. You will have to backtrack and walk for long periods of time for quests and the combat is timed based where you click when a prompt appears to continue combos.

Great game so far, especially if you have read the books and are familiar with the characters and lore. The story is pretty strong so far, I'm still in act 2. Its a bit of a slow burn at the start. There is a lot of backtracking and no real fast travel to speak of, which means long passages of time spend walking around from place to place. I am willing to overlook this because I am invested in the world and want to learn more about the story and lore.

Update: I have finished the game. I would still recommend the game to anyone who is familiar with, or wants to understand the world better. Later in the game there a very limited fast travel system that can only go to 3 pre-set locations in the world, but it is not available after a specified point. The story was satisfying, especially interacting with characters from the books. You have points where you have to make a decision on which sides you want to pick, or what happens to people. The controls and combat system are no doubt outdated. As mentioned in the TDLR the combat is timed based where you click when a prompt appears to continue combos. The movement is also kind of clunky when in combat. I also have 5 hard crashes while playing, so don't forget the cardinal rule of quick saves. Makes friends with F5. Even with all these drawbacks, the game strong point, its characters still had me smiling and laughing at times. After reading the books I felt attached to characters, and after playing this, even more so.

Great story, visually still looks decent, the writing is really good and the side quests are fun, but it crashed a lot on my PC, and the performance wasn't great either. The combat system is fine, but can be inconsistent at times. Character models were reused a lot.
The characters have a lot of depth to them, and everyone on the road has different opinions. All run to hide beneath a shade when it starts raining. Alchemy helps a lot, specially if you missed many side quests and are under levelled like I was. Igni spam is OP. Choices have consequences.
I have yet to play the later games, but this was a pretty good start. Definitely recommend it, it's very cheap in sales.

Only reason I recommend this game is to have a completed Witcher experience.
This WAS a good game, when it was released, definitely did not age well.
Controls are cranky, if you try to move using the WASD buttons, a wave of frustration will overrun you, best stick to your trusted mouse for navigation.
Graphics are not bad, mods make the experience bearable, just to get by.
The story is great, the dialogs are smart and witty, your choices you make throughout the story, affect your progress down the road.
As of 2020, the only reason to play The Witcher 1 is in order to know the story so you can move on to TW2.

The Witcher is an old game.
It falls into the category that a lot of other old RPG games fall into:
Clunky, unreliable, rigid, and – at times – cryptic.

However, this is one of the very best that the older RPGs had to offer, it’s right up there with Knights Of The Old Republic 2.
The starting point of CD Projekt Red’s flagship series may seem humble in comparison to the latter entries of the series, but when you look at this game’s combat, characters, interactions, RPG mechanics, and pacing – you cant help but feel entranced.

The combat, while a little more nuanced than most other RPGs is simple enough. 3 styles to best combat the 3 different types of enemies – rock paper scissors style. Monsters die to silver, humans and animals die to steel. Instead of just mindlessly clicking during combat, you can time your attacks and switch modes at certain points to stack combos and keep the flow up – dealing massive damage with the right perks. The combat does a good job of making you feel at a slight disadvantage in the beginning, but like a complete badass by the end. While there are a few encounters that seem drastically unfair – they are completely outweighed by the times you approach an encounter, deliberating what sword and stance is best and how to slay the enemies quickly and efficiently. Different oils and poisons give advantages against specific foes – giving a Monster Hunter side to combat where you are rewarded for coating your blade with the appropriate dressing before you go into a specific encounter.

The characters are much more than cartoon villains, and Geralt has some depth to him as well. What most people seem like initially are eventually stripped away to show some form of deeper humanity. But this is not always the case, there are quite a few stereotypical characters spattered throughout the story that stick out at times. And there are some interactions where people react unbelievably harsh to your choices. “Is it safer to have this child stay with a good mother figure in a dangerous part of town, or with a less careful mother figure in a place?” While both choices should be understandable, if you choose either one – one of your friends is going to be so angry they wont want to talk to you for a large chunk of the story.

Interactions with the world feel more organic. While you can strike up conversation with most folk, there are a lot of interesting layers that breathe life into even the most insignificant of the lot. You may think that this character must be a major player in the story if you have such interactions with them – only for this character to ostensibly leave by the next act. It makes the world feel alive, especially when those choices matter enough to shift the narrative and some of them cause characters to shift the entire direction of the story.

The RPG Mechanics are spot on, in my book. Potions, gambling, book reading, leveling. It’s to a point where you need to dip your toes in to get by – but you are rewarded for diving in completely. While most potions aren’t very strong – while its not always wise to gamble – reading can be dry – and leveling can be a bit unintuitive… the truth is that each of these aspects are absorbing in their own right. The gabling is fun, the potions work, the leveling is rewarding, the books add great lore. The RPG side to the story that fleshes out the world pulls its weight. Between the combat and the RPG sides – the game holds up amazingly.

Pacing can be a problem at times, but not that badly. You will often go between long periods of traveling the world. An exciting combat encounter is often punctuated by a lot of lengthy walking and traveling. (I advise a mod to increase Geralt’s speed. I caved in and got one for 25% because you will be doing a lot of walking, and it drags the game out) It feels organic for the most part. Those long stretches of more dry periods of walking through the city between shops – gambling, drinking, questing. And then finally getting into a fast paced combat gauntlet – each piece makes you appreciate the other more as the game goes on. Spending time in combat is good, but makes you appreciate the more languid side of the RPG. Spending time in the world is more lax, but makes you appreciate the thrill of combat. While the mid-game has a lot of drawn-out parts where Geralt has to hike extended distances for marginal gain – it’s all well worth it.

8.5/10
The Witcher is an Outstandingly Great title
While it has some rust around the edges and some notches in its hilt – like a trusty silver sword, it stays reliable and true whenever you reach for it.

After beating the game for the first time in medium dificulty I'm writing this review. I took me around 53 hours doing almost all side quests.

The Witcher 1 is a RPG game. Sincerely I expected more about the options and decisions I could make in the game. Of course, decisions influence the game, but I believe it would be more interessanting if there were more situations for decision making. But in overall it is a nice game with a very interesting history.

History: Resuming, the game is based on a hunt against an organization that stole secrets from a Kaher Mohen, a place where Witchers live and train. Other conflicts arise when the Witcher starts his pursue, including politics ambitions.

Journal: The witcher has a journal where you can access information about his primary and secondary quests, glossary, formulas used in alchemy, locations, characters, bestiary map etc. I enjoyed a lot how the game help the player describing history and characters. I my case sometimes I forgot some stuff, and accessing the journal help me remember important information. The Bestiary is very helpful because there you have information about monsters.

Mechanics: I used third person view camera, but there are other posibilities as well. Mechanics are based in walking, talking and fighting.

Combat: I enjoyed the combat style. Basically you have 1 steel sword to fight againt humans and a silver sword to fight nohumans. There are other weapons such as axes and daggers, but I didn't use them in the game. I think swords were more effective. You can forge better weapons with runes and meteorites and use blade coatings that can give you until 40% extra damage. Besides the melee weapons, thge Witcher has the Signs, it is the speels he can cast on enemies and himself.

Monters: The Withcer 1 has a lot of monters with description, short briefing etc. I really appreciated it. Monsters drop itens that you can use in alchemy. Level progression in the game is acceptable. As I did the side quests, from the middle to the end of the game I found very easy to kill them.

Alchemy: that's the magic part of the game. You can read books and scrolls to learn how to make potions, bombs and blade coatings. I suggest to read all the books you can to learn them all. However, during the game I basically used 4 or 5 potions. Alchemy is doing with ingredients you get from plants and corpses. There are a lot of itens you can collect but only 7 basic ingredients to mix you potions and bombs. There are special itens you can get in some specific situations, for example, killing bosses.

Books and scrolls: As all RPG games, the more you talk and read, the more information you get. I recommend reading books for having information about formulas used in alchemy, to learn about history and about monsters.

Loot: You can loot trunks, wardrobes etc anywhere anytime, even inside houses. No one will say anything about it. Just loot always you can.

Making money: Developers made a very interesting form of making money in The Witcher. You can do it with Fist Fight at the Inns trought the chapters of the game and also playing poker with specific NPCs. The other possibility is the dice Poker. Fist fight is very easy, but dice Poker is not so easy at all. I always thought in terms of probability but I lost a lot of money. Sometimes it seems that the computer wants you to loose your money. In some situations I had to save the game and load it again after loosing. Depeding on how advanced you are, you can lose 400+ Orens. In my opinion it is not so easy to make money in this game. Even doing side quests money is not enough to buy expensive books early in the game. You can sold then by around 20% of the buy price. That is rellay important at the beginning. I beat the game with 10k+. I didn't buy any weapons, I found nice swords and always used blade coatings.

Inventory: The Witcher surprised me with the small inventory the character can carry. It is more realistic, so you can't carry a lot of itens. There is no weight in the game, just the number of itens are taken into account for you inventory. You can let you itens stored by the Inkeeper at the Inn.

Crashes: The game crashed about 10 times, most of them in chapter 5 and I decided to reduce the resolution. It seemed to solve the problem, but I'm not sure what was the problem. I've never had problems with games even heavier than The Witcher. My suggestion is: save the game every time you remember. There is the autosaving, but I strongly suggest to save the game constantly.

Conclusion: If you like RPG games, I recommend you the buy this game and play it. It will let you some nice experiences and enjoy the world created by Andrzej Sapkowski.

It's obviously an old game so it has it's weakpoints, that said. It is a good game, the fighting mechanic is not very easy but viable. It's no must play if you want to understand 2 and 3 but it is a gem in it's own way and I highly recommend it. It is hard to keep playing because it is so old but once you get the gist of it, it is easy to keep on playing. Would recommend 8,5/10

I want to start this out saying if I didn't plan on playing 2 and 3, I'd absolutely skip this game. Its worthwhile as an intro to those but I cannot recommend it unless you actively plan on playing the others.

Okie, so, I played the majority of this game over the course of five months in 2020. By this time the game is around thirteen years old. Its not aged gracefully. The voice acting is fairly atrocious. The graphics were ok for 2007. The writing and lore are probably the strongest passive elements of the game. The game mechanics are dated, absolutely. WASD work but they don't work like most games use them, even back in the 2000s. You'll find yourself using Diablo style click to move most likely. The combat is... Not great. Its timing based but it gives you clear visual markers of when you should click to continue combos. I actually love the alchemy system and I am grateful I took the advice to play on a harder difficulty so that using potions was actually a thing I had to do to survive. If there was no challenge to this game it would have been near unbearable fetch quests with a token combat segment.

The game has some misogynistic tropes but there are some pretty bad ass women in it, even if they are basically constant eye candy. I wouldn't say you shouldn't play the game for these reasons unless they are complete deal breakers. There is a lot of female nudity in the game but no outright direct shots of sex. The game is definitely a male power fantasy - you basically can walk into sex by accident, you become a poker dice God, and you become a fist fighting champion - but I still enjoyed it as a woman. I just ended up kinda giggling at how over the top it could be some times.

Overall, I am glad I played it once. I wanted to try to experience as much of this universe as possible so the lore and story of this one was appreciated. I guess I will see as I move to the second game whether or not it could have been best to just... Skip it. But I don't think so. I am now aware of the cultures, peoples, and politics of the world and I think that will be deeply appreciated as I move on to the second.

Note that my play time has a lot of idle hours - I am sure of how many but they are vast - as I have ADHD and would wander off for hours forgetting to turn it off. Its how I do.

If you go for it in 2020 and after, just keep in mind you might have to be patient with some of the dated mechanics. But if you can get past those and you can enjoy a male power fantasy - your gender/sex aside - then you will probably find value in experiencing this game at least once.

Feel Bad About Every Decision You Make Simulator 2008 is a fantastic game in which you are given the choice between different actions at various points in the storyline. Regardless of the decision you make, all other characters will attempt to make you feel horrible about your decision and you will desparately try to convince yourself that you made the right choice but to no avail.

My self-confidence has increased immensely.

I bought this game for the January Steam Sale and I LOVED IT.

I had never really been interested in The Witcher Series and I had no idea what it was about or what kind of game it was, but I bought all 3 games for the sale and decided to start at the first one. My first impression from the game was that it was very ugly and the combat was peepee butthole, but I understood it was made in 2007 so I decided to keep playing.

This game sucks you right in. I grew to love and become attached to many characters and hate others. This game is so good at pulling you in and immersing you in this world. It puts actual weight on the decisions you make in the game. It was amazing and an experience I wish I could relive again for the first time. This is one of my favorite games of all time.

I loved this game so much. The grapichs aren't bad if you consider how old the game is, and the story is awesome.
Most people would say the combat is bad and I agree with that, the best part of the game are the consequences of your decisions. You can decide if you want be good, neutral or even evil in some cases.

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#212 out of 555)... it's time for The Witcher: Enhanced Edition.

The Witcher is a bit of an odd duck: its the first game in one of the most well-known roleplaying game series of all time, yet hardly anyone seems to have actually played it. And, well, I get that. It's a bit dated, and a bit socially problematic here and there. But, and I hope this isn't too controversial of an opinion, I genuinely think it does some things better than either of its sequels.

You likely already know the premise: you play as Geralt of Rivia, a witcher, a monster-slayer mutant hated and feared by the peasantry, but a provider of an invaluable service all the same. As you wander about the world, slaying monsters, Geralt inevitably becomes wrapped up in both supernatural shenanigans and--perhaps more perilously--political intrigue.

Now, the thing about the Witcher is that it's based on a series of novels and short stories, the latter of which are the most compelling. Where The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings gets Geralt deeply involved in the troubled politics of the Northern Realms and The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt seems him preoccupied with world-ending supernatural mischief, the first game is much more grounded. It, more than any of the others, does the best job at replicating the feel of the short stories, as you proceed from one episodic chapter to another, dealing chiefly with fantastical monsters, many of whom feel as though they stepped right out of inverted fairy tales. In terms of depicting the concept of being a witcher and exploring the unique mythology of the setting, The Witcher does a fare bit better than either sequel.

So, all that said, there are some issues. The animation is stilted and the dialog can be a bit wonky (especially the line delivery) and the infamous sex cards are just as cringey as you might expect (but, I'd argue, are no more cringey than the carefully-choreographed sex scenes in the latter games). All of which is pretty forgivable. The most divisive aspect of the game is easily the combat, which is a fairly simple, rhythm-based affair rather than the more active action combat you might expect. It certainly takes some getting used to, but I think it does an excellent job at making you feel like a highly skilled swordsman--it a combat system designed around striking the enemy as often as possible while avoiding taking hits yourself. A perfect fit for a skilled witcher, I think, to whom combat is more of a dance than a brawl.

It took a second playthrough for me to really appreciate this one.

At times, the Witcher feels like an incredibly shoddy production; but it manages to transcend that by being an excellent game. Its core mechanics and story all completely revolve around you being a Witcher: a gameplay loop revolving around monster slaying, huge emphasis on collecting ingredients to brew into your alchemical potions, and weighing in on the plights of the locals to 'choose the lesser evil.'

It's roughness will no doubt be an obstacle that's difficult to some: I speak from experience. But difficult isn't impossible, and this is certainly a game that's worth it.
