The gimmick made it sound interesting, but that's as far as it goes, it really doesn't get any more engaging besides the typing novelty, which wears off quickly. And it can get pretty frustrating in higher difficulties due to the tight time window to go and grab the bible.
I suggest buying it on a hard discount and playing it until you get tired.

this would be nice if it wasn't for the fact that it is a bullet hell game that is locked at 30fps and still manages to lag

Quite fancied the typing game part but it's the difficulty in jumping back on shift and using WASD to move away from the bullets that made it frustrating as hell. Like other people have said, nice graphics but not for me.

I really hate to give this a thumbs down because it's a cool concept with great pixel art and some solid music from the small sample that I heard.

Unfortunately, I just can't recommend it - the gameplay leaned way too far into the bullet hell mechanics for my tastes and not enough into the typing aspect. I do really enjoy typing games but this one just wasn't for me.

Soft yes.

I had initial doubts about it but find myself quite pleased about how it plays, including the rather peculiar gamepad play for a typing game. It does seem to help with positioning to have the finer articulation from an analog stick in a bullet hell arena but the difficulty really seems to stem from the split level of attention one has to pay to both tasks simultaneously.

So far, seems more fun than I initially expected from the outset.

Interesting concept, fun world, and a good sense of humor. But holy crap these controls. It's not really the fault of the game as I don't know how I would improve them. You need a way to move around and respond at an action game pace while keeping all of your fingers on the typing home row. It might help if pushing the right shift prevented left keys from doing anything except move (and the reverse for the left shift / right keys) . Also , you should be able to have movement keys that can be operated by your right hand as well as your left. At any rate, I don't think I'll come back to this one despite it's promise

You are never failing because of the typing, and only because of failing to evade. It could have been comibined much more elegantly, by scaling the difficulty of the projectiles on the number of typing errors and the typing speed and giving you more time to type if you evade more projectiles.

The ideal strategy is to type one handed and evade constantly, which defeats the purpose of a typing game.

I expect this kind of game to be a fun way to train my typing speed and precision.

Instead, what Textorcist requires me to learn is to context switch from the middle of typing a word to movement (to dodge) and then back to completing the interrupted word due to its hare-brained control scheme. This is quite frustrating and I do not expect it to ever be useful outside of the context of this game.

What could have Textorcist done instead? Eye tracking as movement input would likely make the most sense. Or maybe even some sort of a voice command system could have been tried. Or required typing could have been restricted to letters from one half of the keyboard at a time. Or maybe no great solution exists.

Either way, what we do have here is not something I want to spend more time on.

I don't need to play much to understand the control scheme completely ruins this game. Having to dodge, yet somehow type is a poor decision in terms of game play, unless one is expected to use a single finger to type using their left hand, and navigate around using their right hand. There isn't enough time between attacks to have dodged, then reset your hands in proper position to begin typing again. Too bad. Graphically it seems appealing, and the music was interesting. Just terrible controls left me to quickly uninstalling this and never reinstalling again.

Taking the typing tutor in new directions is a great mechanic to build around. The use here stumbles with juggling movement while also having two hands on the home row.

This game is currently in the Humble Choice for October 2021. If you are interested in the game and it's before November 2nd, 2021, consider picking up the game as part of the current monthly bundle.

A Bullet-hell shooter with a sort of typing mechanic.

The Textorcist is a very unique game. You control a priest who has to use his spells. If you play with your controller it’s done through the left bumper and right bumper on a controller. On the other hand if you use a keyboard you're playing a rather complex typing program. Both of these control scheme feel like it creates a completely different but interesting game. This seems simple enough and actually can be quite fun when trying to do a perfect run on a boss.

But then the Textorcist combat starts and you start to see this is a bullet hell game hiding behind a simple mechanic. Players will have to dodge attacks on the main screen while still entering in pieces of the incantations on the bottom. It’s a strange feeling but it works well together. However, while playing it, I was unable to even speak, my focus and attention were forced to be on this game fully and that’s a great feeling as it pushes you to the limit. The fourth boss in the game made me struggle but I also enjoyed learning the fights and trying to master the game.

Pick this up if you want something strange. There’s not much like this. It’s not a typing game, and while it’s a bullet hell shooter, the combat is very unique. There are only 10 bosses and the first four had no stage before them so it might be short, but I have this very strong desire to go back to master all these battles. I will return.

If you enjoyed this review or want to know what I think of other games in the bundle, check out the full review on or subscribe to my youtube channel: https://youtu.be/-cOq91v8Vo0

The Textorcist: The Story of Ray Bibbia is an experiment that works better than expected. The focus on boss fights is the right one, as the exploration and puzzle sections are novel but not noteworthy. The controls can seem unwieldy at first, but part of the charm and excitement is in trying to concentrate on typing and moving at the same time. The presentation is excellent, and the length is perfect, as it never feels like the game goes on for too long. The Textorcist may seem like an odd game on the surface, but give it a chance, and you'll find it to be one of the more inventive and fun experiences out there.

This is likely the worst 'game' I have played. I was expecting a game where my typing skills would defeat enemies. Instead, it's a game where you need to move and pick up items, dodge things, and type while at the same time dodging. Really terrible game.

Love typing games. Word games. All that jazz.

This is a clunky mess. You either have to hold shift and use WASD to move or use your arrow keys to move. Neither of these are particularly fluid in a typing game. Or is this a bullet hell game?

Doesn't mesh. Really wish any of the reviews pointed out how you moved before I bought this....

The Textorcist: The Story of Ray Bibbia is a fun game mixed with bullet hell and typing.

Pros
-Good art.
-Good music.
-Actual texts of exorcism.
-Fast level replay design.

Cons
-Steam screenshot key not working at all.
-Some texts are confusing e.g. 'Appia' street where 'a' looks like 'd' with the game's font.

I bet you think you are good at typing. Think you can spell all your words precisely and hastily. Probably think you are hot shit with your little keyboard. Yeah? Well guess again. My boy Ray is about to teach you a lesson and drag you to hell and back.

Decent Bullet Hell, pretty original game play mechanics, the story and dialogue start off halfway cringey but it grows on you as you play. All around a fun yet sometimes frustrating game, but only because you suck at typing.

THE TEXTORCIST
Type: Bullet Hell + Typing
Difficulty: Very High; No Difficulty Settings
Rating: It's Okay
Their Price: $15
My Price: $5
How Much I Got It For: $2

PROS: AMEN TO THIS
✞ Cool enemy designs and clean art.
✞ Bangin soundtrack.
✞ Super satisfying to win.
✞ You'll probably learn how to multi-task, mainly typing with one hand while watching the screen.

CONS: TO HELL WITH THIS
⛧ NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THE FOLLOWING:
--- Slow typers.
--- Those who aren't familiar with their keyboard.
--- Those who aren't good at bullet hell games or games in general.
--- Those looking for a casual, relaxing game.
⛧ $15 for a 3-5 hour game.
⛧ Awful, dry humor.
⛧ Story and characters aren't interesting at all imo.
⛧
The research / home parts should just be completely removed. It wouldn't change the gameplay. They only exist as fillers, and for the bad jokes.
⛧
The password part. That only existed for a terrible joke.
⛧
The last bar of the final boss. Unless you can type without looking at your keys for even one second, well...good luck.
NOTES

If you're an experienced gamer who just wants an adrenaline rush, then this is the game for you. It's very fast and requires a lot of skill from you (typing and dodging at the same time), so you will be constantly moving your eyes and fingers to try and defeat the bosses. If you're anything but that, then don't even consider buying this.

If you really are gonna buy this game regardless of what I said, then I would recommend getting it on sale for less than $10 at least. I was able to reach the final boss in about 3 hours, although I couldn't get past the last two words due to the difficulty spike in bullets shot (which is complete BS; call me salty, but it's disappointing that I was able to blaze through the whole game except for this single part). Technically, I could try again. But I have other, more important things to do than waste more time on a game I basically completed but died last second.

It doesn't have much content aside from it being a typing / bullet hell game. The characters and story aren't noteworthy at all, and are even kind of annoying in my opinion.

But of course, that's for you to judge if you buy it.

Really outside-of-the-box and unique game. Worth a try (especially how cheap it is on sale) if you like Bullet Hell games. You don't have to type 200WPM to play this game. It's much more about learning how to type the way the game wants you to, intermittently and often one-handed. The typing part is more like learning a unique set of controls, then rewarding you for being a great typist. It can definitely be hard, and it takes practice, but it's got great design, visuals, and high-energy music to keep you going.

It's not often you find games catered to a typing crowd and it's even more rare to find one as well done and challenging as this. Never a dull moment with this game and it keeps calling you back to hit back harder.

Also you might learn some Latin exorcising script while you're at it. If you want a typing game and you're not afraid of a game out to get you this is a must play, extra modifications to make levels easier/harder adds a nice amount of flavor as well.

Instead of coming here saying that this game is bad because is too difficult... Yes, it is difficult at first, but then you get to know you keyboard better, and how your fingers really sucks at typing, so yeah. High strangeness with panache!

Banish demons by actually typing holy words of exorcism while you twinkle-toe around storms of Satanic bullets in this gonzo indie masterpiece! The Textorcist is truly an impressive bit of gaming, and that's not hyperbole -- it takes an outrageous concept and executes it in such a fun, fairly challenging, and weird way that you'll be shocked it hasn't been done so well before . . . or at all, really.

If you're a fair typist, you've got a taste for the outre, and you're just a teensy bit hardcore, buy this now! And as an added perk, typing those long Latin phrases while threading mazes of glowing deathballs will almost certainly improve your RL keyboard skills.

(I'd like to add that my typing -- accuracy, speed, etc. -- has suffered tremendously as of late, and for some reason I cannot define, affecting both my work and recreational writing. But upon playing this game, I actually began to see an immediate improvement, and now I'm getting back to where I was before! I'll never look askance at a typing game again, even when it's not this cool.)

Finally! A chance to put all that practice typing one-handed to use.... what?

Aside from its sexy satire and inventive setting, Textorcist makes typing the core of the game in many ways. The menus, items and many events are driven by typing words. It may seem strained with the adventure mode, but its too fascinating to deny. It's a world of words, and those words are well spun; cheezy as heck, but fun to read. While the play itself seems stilted, and you'll start out often dodging then typing, then dodge then type... Give it time. This will push you to get so fast and skilled with typing that you'll surprise yourself. I'm not kidding.

Mavis Beacon had it all wrong. The only thing that will make you faster and more accurate is fear of the devil.

This one's too fun to miss, and that soundtrack is pure bliss. ★★☆

PROTIP: Did you know that windows lets you use more than one keyboard? One for you one for a friend? ;)

This is a very unique take on the typing genre. You play an exorcist, and you need to vanquish the demonic presences from the world. The story isn't anything super complicated or special. This is a SCHMUP/Typing crossover.

The gameplay is quite simple, you avoid boss attacks (SCHMUP bullet hell type attacks) while typing phrases/chants correctly. The difficulty arises from being able to balance movement (Shift+WASD, or Arrow Keys), and also typing the phrases and words correctly.

Some of the hardmode bosses can have difficult patterns to avoid, and it can become challenging pretty quickly. I type around 120-130 words per minute, and I found the last couple hardmode bosses to be difficult.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable experience for me. The only complaint I have, is that the items you obtain from beating easymode bosses can't be used for hardmode. The game took about 10 hours to 100%.

First off, I got The Textorcist free on Epic and loved it so much that I bought it on Steam. This one-of-a-kind bullet hell typing game has a few big things going for it:
- Fantastic, unforgettable soundtrack
- Great characters, story, and humor
- Extremely challenging gameplay that's satisfying to beat.
If you enjoy typing games, you'll probably be into this. I don't recommend this for people who are not good typists.

A few tips from someone who's beaten the game:
- It will take time to get the hang of this game. It's HARD. Take a deep breath, take a break, and try again!
- I beat the game using WASD + Shift to move, but see what works for you. Consider using AutoKey to swap Shift for Spacebar to save your pinky.
- You can move and type at the same time. You only have to release Shift if you're typing W/A/S/D or if you're safe enough to return to normal typing position. Prioritize avoiding bullets over typing quickly.
- Get used to hitting left-side keys from WASD position. Let your right hand help with left-side keys.

???????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????.

Really awesome game, but it lacks in content, and challenge.

What's cool about this game is that it looks and feels janky at first buy after a while you get used to it and develop a satisfying rhythm. The art is amazing with smooth animations and a unique visual style. The setting really compliments the gameplay, and forces you to type in Latin, (I think) which gives letter combinations you just never get in plain english. All these things help contribute to some great boss fights with intense and creative design.

That being said the boss fights are the main part of the game which puts a strong foot forward but leaves the rest of the game behind. The structure for getting to the boss fights are segments with simple puzzles. I'm not a puzzler by any means but i'm not inept either, still the puzzles in this game are setup in very frustrating ways. I had to consult a guide a few times just to get away from the grinding halt that the puzzles brought. Most of the solutions were almost random with no in game text to point you in the right direction. Just empty sets that you have to shamble around for the one code or key that will let you progress.

The real issue is that the game is very short. I reached the end credits with only four hours into the game. While I didn't feel dissatisfied by the end thanks to the spectacle that was the boss fights, I probably would have felt some regret if I had bought the game at full price.

The game was also really easy. I beat most bosses first or second try except for one, and even first tried the final boss. And I did it without any items. The difficulty actually seems fair in retrospect, but this was my first typing game besides typeracer at 50wpm, and i've never touched a bullet hell game either. I just expected more pain to come with the idea of those two genres colliding, it seemed like a match made in hell.

Other small things that were annoying but not too bad were the story and the dialogue. The premise of the story was great but I wasn't fleshed out enough to be investing; and the dialogue wasn't anything special, it rode the line between quirky and cringy bit too much for me. I also found it weird that for a game with blood, vomit, and demons rendered about as realistically as possible for the medium, that the story could be easily adapted into a disney film if you gave it new visuals.

I say those things are small because the gameplay is the real star here. It's so good that while I would never pay full price for this game. I would probably pay triple AAA price for a sequel with more content, difficult, and better in between sections.

I am a fast typist and found this game to be pretty fun. I am still in the middle of finishing it, and the game can be challenging if you are not paying attention. I died a few times even though I can type up to 120 WPM.

The only thing that I found odd was the blend between Western religion and Eastern culture. It made me cringe so much that I had to stop playing for a while.

There's a really cool concept to this, but it's honestly about the hardest game I've ever played. I say this as a person who types 125 WPM and has never broken a sweat playing a typing game before.

Imagine playing bullet hell with your left hand and a typing game with your right, at the same time. It breaks my brain and it's the first time in a really long time that I've hit a difficulty wall that I just can't get past.

I'm leaving this as a positive review because there's something really cool here for the people who can stomach it, but I had to write this to warn anyone considering it that it's not for the faint of heart.

Look. No one asked for this game. No one needed a typing game that combines bullet-hell mechanics, a god-awful mid-90's anime plot, and actual Latin. But, damn. It's fun as hell and a real good time. Worth picking up for sure, even just for the novelty of it. Or, you know, to actually learn how to get rid of demons. That too.

If you're one of the 1% of the 1% that like typing-games AND bullet-hell games, you will love this game
But don't be discouraged if you're not the best at bullet-hells. The game throws items at you as you play, that make it easier.
At the same time, if the game is not hard enough for you, they also give you items that make it harder, but raise the score.

Story is actually really good, another thing i really wasn't expecting out of this one

Also, incredibly good music.

Amazing game. Really surprised me

A typing game combined with... a bullet-hell shooter? It's definitely a unique combination, and I feel the developers behind The Textorcist have done their best job at making it work. It will definitely take some getting used to (and I highly recommend not using the arrow keys, but shift + WASD instead) but once I learned the controls, it surprisingly worked fairly well. Surprisingly you can also play it with a controller which removes the typing, and therefore half the fun of the game, but it also functions as the rookie mode for inexperienced players. I wouldn't really recommend this game to newcomers anyway, as it can get pretty tough. The typing and bullet-hell segments on their own are very manageable, but multitasking the both of them at once becomes a whole different story. This is further helped by each of the bosses having their own unique gimmick, like covering your typing window or even scrambling letters. I really hated the latter because it was used during a fight where I had to type Latin constantly, but it was still a fun challenge. I hate Latin more than ever now. Making a spelling error sends you a character back which can lead to absolute chaos, and that happened quite a lot for me while typing Latin. But the game is--or rather, can be made more forgiving through artifacts which you can gather from bosses. The game can be made easier- or harder with those, such as a spelling error not setting you a character back. The only disadvantage to having these buffs active is that you get a penalty for the leaderboards, but most people probably won't care about the score anyway since to be the highest, you're going to have to play with a good amount of debuffs active. The game is also forgiving in that you don't lose a heart upon taking a hit, and instead you just lose your book. Pick this book up again without getting hit and nothing of value was lost, except that you have to type all over again if you took too long with picking up the book. Though this game might sound menacing, I really felt it was a fun game with a good level of challenge. And if you are somehow a god of multitasking (as in, not a man), there's also some post-game variants of the bosses for an even bigger challenge. All in all, The Textorcist was a very fun game for me, and I can't wait to see more games trying out this formula!

Great music, great combat mechanics. The story stuff I could care less about, but the care put into it is pretty good. A little too trendy at times, like throwing a 1 into every string of ! there is for some reason.

Basically you move around, dodge bullet hell stuff, get close enough for your typed words to have an effect, and keep dodging. If you get hit, you drop your book; you have a couple seconds to pick it back up or you forget where you left off, having to start the entire phrase again. This is a FANTASTIC mechanic that really forces you to want to dodge and weave through bullets in tougher bosses. You only take damage if you take a hit when not holding your book, so playing it safe is easy enough... not like these are DOJ Black Label patterns or anything. You just have to start the phrase over. Kinda optional, very tense, great design.

And... you don't need to take your fingers off the keys to dodge. Hold shift and you convert WASD to movement. Kinda simple and brilliant solution. Otherwise only expert one hand typists could do much in the game.

Only real complaints are the whole investigation thing, having to talk and wander your office to a file drawer or internet to research something to get the next location. Sometimes when traveling your destination's name is cut off and you'll have to type in the full name anyway, so you might need a refresher from the journal. Luckily said journal helps you out if you come back after a few weeks and wouldn't have any way to remember what the hell you were doing previously.

Pretty happy with my full-price buy, but I'd probably only give it a fully full recommend at 10 bucks or less.

This game is a hidden gem! Half typing game and half bullet hell you have to type english and latin phrases while dodging attacks and lots of bullets at the same time.

The difficulty increases fast, after the first few exorcisms the texts are about 450 to 475 characters per fight, with occasional modifications such as swapped characters,
inserted 1 or 0 into words
and similar stuff. Great fun!

A brilliant idea for a very unique game. Combining the (often boring) genre of typing games with the much more interesting bullet hell has resulted in a fine-tuned creature that keeps you on your toes, and requires you to relearn many things you've been doing instinctively for years.
Aside from the gameplay elements, the pixel art visuals are gorgeous, the music is bombastic, and the tongue-in-cheek humour is consistently amusing.
I strongly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys challenging, novel twists on mundane concepts.

This is a really clever game that forces you to learn a completely new skill: typing and dodging at the same time. At first your brain will not want to do this, so you'll try some Bad Ideas.
First you will try typing one handed while doing movement with your other hand.
Then you'll go two-handed typing, but move your right hand back and forth to do movement.
Then you'll switch to shift-WASD to move, so your hands are always on the home row, but you'll still stop typing to move.
Finally, you'll realize that you can type all the letters except WASD while moving, and you'll only stop for those four.
Getting to that last style will make the normal game pretty trivial, but it's still very satisfying.

The game is wrapped in a fun style. However, everything that isn't the actual gameplay, the actual fights, is just bad. The story is dumb and navigating it is tedious. The conversations are idiotic and slow. The itemization is a waste of time, and will only teach you bad habits for when hardcore comes and you can't use items. I wish there was a way to skip all the filler and just do the fights. Still, it's worth it.

I ran into a couple of bugs, but nothing that made me upset. I highly recommend the game.

I like the setting and idea, like the old computer and o research and so on but the typing is just annoying, It just doesn't work they should have gone more like epistory. I finished the night club level and decided to stop as typing with one hand just doesn't do it if at least you could do movement with your mouse it would already be more bearable, but as now nope. Too bad.

Textorcist is a unique bullethell combined with typing, it sounds oddy but it's really fun to play. The bosses are hard, but it's possible to beat them after few tries (30 mins-1h). Music perfectly fits to the gameplay. The story... ye there's a story, behind brilliant gameplay, and it's boring and not addictive. Omitting the story this game is must have for indie/bullethell fans, you won't meet this sort of gameplay anywhere.

Thematically - very cool. Typing game mixed with bullet hell. But it doesn't get my vote. The bad stuff first:

The game graphically is janky as fuck. Toggling windowed/fullscreen/stretched can only be done from the main menu or it crashed for me. While in game, you can't get back to stretched mode at all, that I could find. The resolution can't be set, it doesn't use a 4:3 resolution well, it's just shit overall. See also the camera below.

The typing part of the game is not well done. More than half of it is bullshit Latin so you have to focus on COPYING THE SPELLING rather than just typing known words correctly & quickly. If it was normal English words, it'd be several times easier, and an actual typing skill test, rather than COPYING LETTER BY LETTER. Very hard to do this while dodging bullet hell.

There's no spoken word readout (not that that'd help so much in Latin anyway) so you have to take your eyes off the bullet hell to read/spell the line of text, otherwise you can only see the single current word floating above Ray's head. And if you're trying to do it that way it's slow as hell and you're even more likely to die.

When you get hit, you drop your bible (or whatever the book is) and you must pick it up ASAP or else you'll take damage (you get only 3HP by default) and have to re-type the last bunch of the words. That's a good mechanic, but your book flies in seemingly random direction and distance, and you must walk precisely on it, it won't pick up when you're a few pixels away. If it flies towards the enemy, or into a pile of bullets, well you're fucked.

When the book flies away, sometimes you can't even see where it is. There's a cross indicator around your character that points in the direction, but the book should really be visible always-on-top. Sometimes the book goes flying into a place you can't even reach easily, gotta run around barriers etc. And sometimes the camera won't even show you that location (see below).

Poor camera placement. I tried to figure out what sucks about it, and only found a couple specifics:
-it cannot move past certain preprogrammed limits, and at the edges of these limits it's often dark, fuzzy, UI on top of it, all sorts of things making it hard to see. If your book's at the edge, good luck.
-it doesn't move with you as fast as you move, it lags behind
I was often frustrated at the view the game is giving me, but I couldn't figure out any other specifics while trying to survive.

All that put together, I was 'not skilled' enough to get very far, I only had 4 items and none of the artifact/trinket/whatever goes in the left slot. I equipped everything to benefit me (which tanks the score percentage) and still couldn't do it.

The good:
-The music is awesome - Original Soundtrack composed by GosT
-if you like bullet hells, this is that.
-if you like typing games, this is that, though they're not real or sensible words. More an exercise in copying spelling than actually being good at typing. Also no spaces or punctuation or numbers up to the point I was playing.
-The art style is fun pixel art, I liked it.
-The little bit of the story I experienced was interesting enough.

If you can get it dirt cheap or in a bundle etc, check it out, but don't expect a good experience.

Easily one of the most punishingly difficult games I've ever played, but also one of the most incredibly fun. The mechanics of the game are so brilliant, and very well realized. Such a fast-paced action game with a unique mechanic for attacking isn't something I think I've ever seen. The visuals are great; late-game demons are incredibly sick, and the soundtrack is an absolute banger (credit to GosT).

It does have it's problems: Sometimes the difficulty feels a little over-the-top unfair: your book gets knocked into a place you can't reach in time, or the not-quite top-down perspective hides a bullet from you that's tough to see and results in you getting hit. It's not perfect. Also the story is pretty so-so at best, but come on, who plays a game like this for the story?

Over all a stellar little indie gem: a punishingly difficult bullet hell and a super unique idea and mechanic. 8/10.

Really wish I could recommend it, but game-breaking bugs that have not been fixed over a year after release? That's pretty bad. It's made worse by the old-fashioned difficulty. A punishing game works both ways; if you put pressure on a player to perform well, that pressure is also exerted on the game you make.

You cannot afford to be anything less than excellent as a developer if you intend to make a hard game. Difficulty is heavy, and you are challenging yourself to make a game that will not buckle under that weight.

So in this game, when it crashes or when the controls freeze or when the screen resolution randomly changes or when your book bounces out of bounds -- all of which have happened in the first piddling 3 hours of playtime -- and you die in the process, returned to the beginning of a non-stop 20 minute boss battle... you have to talk about that in a review.

And that's not the end of the problems. That may sound strange given that this is a Very Positive game, but it could've been Overwhelmingly. I really wish I could've liked it more.

this game is HELL and i absolutely cannot wait to keep playing.

UPDATE:

Okay, so I haven't technically beaten the entire game yet, but I've finished the base game and experienced the hardcore fights enough to leave a full review SO here we go. Some spoilers ahead.

This game is challenging in a way that I've never experienced. It really engages all of your brain and I love it. Yes, it's frustrating, but not in a way that makes you entirely give up on the game. It's all about muscle memory and recognizing patterns.
Game mechanics: GOOD

The music for this game is also absolutely SUPERB. There is not a song on this OST that isn't a banger. GosT created the perfect background music for a game like this: the music is chaotic to match the game's nature. You bet your butt I snatched it up.
Music: GOOD

The Textorcist's humor is perfect, in my opinion. It's kind of shock-value-y, but I think it works given the backdrop that it's set against. Some jokes had me laughing out loud at my screen. The craziest part about this game though, is that it so subtly sneaks you into a more serious story as it progresses. Along with that, the story is truly powerful, in my opinion. The end of one fight (along with the events that immediately followed) almost made me cry. I can only describe it as being hit by a truck. The story is truly well-written.

Currently I sit at having three of the Hardcore bosses defeated. I'll continue to work my way through them, can't wait to see what the endgame has in store!

TL;DR, great game, great music, make sure to take breaks for sanity.

EDIT TO THE EDIT: I deleted my saves for kicks and giggles and it turns out that was a blessing in disguise because I figured out why I never saw the final cutscene after the last boss! I accidentally hit Retry after beating them and then just exited to get out of it, and I think that's what gave me issues! So I had a fundamental misunderstanding of the game's story and structure! Long story short I finally got that last cutscene and I feel such closure.

I like typing (loved Typing of the Dead) and was excited to try this one with my newly lubed keyboard. Unfortunately the mix isn't fun to me. The game challenges you with switching back and forth between movement and typing words, the typing itself misses out.

Even with the Shift-WASD movement input, it's just a very stressful experience that rarely allows the catharsis of getting a few words right and feeling its positive effect. Mostly it plays out like this:
move, type 2 words, get hit, retrieve your book, try to pickup where you left off, mess up under stress, lose your progress in the word, try to focus typing, realize you don't have time, try to move, get hit -- you get the idea.

This game basically delivers on what it promises. Heavy metal bullet hell mixed with a typing game.

Thematically the use of typing-game mechanics for exorcism is genius, and it meshes well with the boss design. Later on the words start including a lot of latin, which I could see annoying some people since it makes them less intuitive, but I didn't mind. The game forgives mistakes as long as you quickly grab your book, which leads to nice bursts of frantic activity. You can't really dodge and type at the same time, so it's slightly clunky, but there's generally enough gaps in the patterns to get some verses in.

There's no regular enemies or levels, just alternating bosses and exploration/story segments (which work in a bunch of cute typing-based gimmicks). The plot does a good job setting the right tone but it's a pretty standard film noir plot beneath the surface.

I'd recommend watching a youtube video of the first boss. That'll pretty much tell you everything you need to know about this game and whether it's for you.

Quick Summary

The Textorcist is a bullet-hell typing game (yes, you read that correctly) that challenges your multi-tasking skills, because you have to dodge an obscene amount of bullets on the screen while typing in words that damage your opponents, which is a very fun concept that I would like to see more of.

Gameplay

In The Textorcist you are an exorcist that has to fight a number of demonic bosses by dodging the bullets they create while reciting prayers that damage them by typing in the words that appear on your screen. Bosses consist of 5, later 6 different phases with differentiating attack patterns. You finish a phase by typing in all words on the screen which form a prayer that damages them, however some bosses mess with your ability to even type them in, for example by putting the words upside down or setting your bible on fire, which deletes some of your letters. While this is a cool concept, it can seriously fuck with your brain if your multi-tasking ability is lacking and I got hit quite often purely because I was in the middle of typing a word and couldn't see the bullets in front of me quick enough. While you have the bible in your hand you are invincible to all attacks, instead your bible gets knocked out of your hand if you get hit. That's the part where you have to act fast. If you get hit while not carrying your bible you take damage and there's a countdown in which you have to get your bible back, otherwise the entire phrase you typed in resets and you essentially have to do the phase from scratch. This can lead to some very frustrating moments, especially when you're almost done with the phrase you're supposed to type in but in the last second you get hit and your bible gets knocked into the other side of the room leaving almost no chance for you to recover it in time. There's also a demon form that you have to enter during some phases, in which instead of typing you just fire projectiles at the bosses yourself. While this mechanic is pretty cool, you drop your bible immediately when entering this state, which takes away your invincibility and you sometimes get spawned into bullets after exiting demon mode, which given the fact that you only have 3 hearts during the entirety of the game can be a pretty big deal. Other than that however the gameplay feels solid and to be honest better than I expected when I first heard about the concept.

Story

The story...exists. It's nothing special, consisting of just a few dialogues that somewhat explain the existence of the demons and the backstory of the exorcist himself, however it wasn't particularly interesting, which lead to me skipping some of the dialogue entirely or at least scrolling through it, waiting to get my hands on the gameplay again.

Artstyle/ Soundtrack

The game looks decent, being very dark, which fits the atmosphere of the game and very detailed backgrounds, however compared to other games that use this type of pixelstyle it just looks kinda bland and boring. The soundtrack however is freaking amazing, with every single track being a banger that hypes you up during the very tight bossfights and makes your blood rush.

Worth the price?

As harsh as it sounds, no. 12,50€ is just too much for the amount of content that's being offered. However, if you have some spare money during a sale, it's definitely worth picking up if you are interested in the concept, are not looking for an immersive story-heavy experience and just want to have some quick fun, with some unique gameplay.

Conclusion

All in all, the game is a pretty nice experience, however the product itself gets carried by the gameplay and the soundtrack, with other elements of the game lacking. The game is also imo too expensive and sometimes it can get really frustrating. I still recommend this game, but only if you're someone who can enjoy a game purely because of it's gameplay.

The Textorcist is one of the hidden gems of 2019. It's an incredible idea, and the developers did an excellent job on delivering on it. I really hope it gets the recognition it deserves, as I had a ton of fun with it. That said, there are a couple issues, both stemming from the lack of settings (and maybe the engine?). The most glaring issue is that when sound effects play at once, they stack unnecessarily and can be painfully loud. This is made worse because you can't lower the volume of sound effects. The second issue is that the game is locked at 30 fps. It's not terrible because at least it's a sturdy lock, I never experienced any noticeable dips in frame rate. But it is a bullet hell game, and I the fluidity provided by a higher frame rate could have been a huge improvement for the experience. Finally, it is just a teensy bit too short. There is at least one plot thread that could have been explored for more content that disappointed me when it was brushed aside. Maybe we'll get a sequel? These issues are minor though, I still had a blast playing the game and highly recommend it!

I wanted to like this game but it turned out exactly as I feared.

Instead of doing 1 genre right it does 2 poorly. The bullet hell and typing mechanics are at constant odds with one another. The bullet hell is pretty bland and simple and the typing is mostly nonsense words. The only difficulty comes from the lack of time during a fight to frantically move your hands to a typing position and get a word or 2 out. Learn to type 1 handed or use a controller with your feet for maximum potential.

If you think you'd enjoy having to type scrambled Latin while also having to swat away a constant barrage of bees with your hands this game is for you.

I AM ENOCH VARG, THE DEVIL'S SON, AND YOU'RE GONNA PAY FOR THIS.

The Textorcist is a fun, and charming game based solely around performing exorcisms by typing them out, and dodging bullets. There's really not a whole lot else to say about the game. The characters, and dialogue are both very enjoyable, and the music is very catchy. The game gets pretty difficult around the 5th boss, but never stops being fun. Replayability comes in the form of high scores, and leaderboards, and is honestly just fun enough to want to refight bosses just to do it. The game has a demo, so I recommend at least giving it a shot. For $15, or the $12.75 I paid for it during the launch promotion, I can definitely say I got my moneys worth.

You'll wish you learned how to type better as a young child.
