Having played the first The Surge only shortly I can already say the sequel - even if it’s more mainstream in comparison - pulled me in quicker. It’s just a better game in pretty much all aspects.
The first game had some extremely boring environments and in what I had played a lot of enemies just lurking around corners. Granted, I didn’t get very far or play it for long. The second one has these things too, but it sure has a lot more variety and it just makes for a much better experience.
Just like Dark Souls the entire world is connected, but there are areas that need to be loaded in in order to progress (i.e. going from inside to outside and vice versa). Not a big deal at all, but it goes give the impression these are all separate areas. The world itself looks messy and sometimes it feels like things were just melted or patched together. So much for sci-fi.
The game doesn’t have a dark or moody atmosphere like the Dark Souls games - it’s actually quite sunny in comparison - but it can get a bit tense nevertheless. This is mainly because of the combat (situations).
Combat consists of a fun risk/reward system where you can target a specific limb of an enemy and get it as a schematic if damaged enough. This way you can obtain a ton of different weapons and equipment, provided you have the resources to build them. You also need batteries in order to perform these moves so you can’t just go from an enemy to enemy and become a living legend.
Besides schematics you can also find implants that might make things a little easier for you. One example would be the option to see where an enemy will strike, allowing you to better parry them.
Boss fights most of the times need a few tries but you should be able to take 1 or 2 down without dying, just by paying enough attention.
Defeating enemies, bosses and completing quests will earn you scrap that can be used to level up.
Dying naturally gives you another chance to collect your loot, or else it’s gone forever. It wouldn’t be a Souls-like otherwise, now would it?
As I mentioned the world looks like a mess, but with plenty of detail. Characters look nice and the attack animations generally look great. The equipment also looks pretty cool, as does the interface and the menus. No complaints here.
I can’t really remember much about the voice acting. I do remember a lot of grunts and noises though. But I guess that if it didn’t stand out then there’s usually nothing wrong with it.
I didn’t find any issues during my time with the game but I did find the final part of the game and the final boss exceptionally hard in comparison to the rest of the game. In fact, I still haven’t managed to finish off the last boss and have also given up on even doing that.
The Surge 2 is to this day still underrated. It’s a Souls-like, like many games these days, but also tries to maintain its own identity by giving you a different sort of combat mechanic. I have to be honest and say I found this mechanic a lot more fun and rewarding than the one Dark Souls uses (and I *adore* that game). I sincerely hope for a third one someday, but that’s up to you guys as well.
If you love Souls-like games then this one is really a must.
