Die Charaktere

i played the old secret world back then and came back to SWL a few weeks ago. For me its an extrem unique kind of a mmorpg. I rarely had that much interest in Story/Enviroment and such in other mmos. This comes with a good item system, upgrading and excellent stat progression with passive skilling. It is just a joy to play a game which hasnt a demotivating horizontal progression system. You will get very powerful but in addition there will be very difficult encounters and things to do. If you like story and intersting characters/monsters this is for you, and if you also like grinding stuff in the endgame even more. The only downside would be item shop with quite some pay to win things to buy, BUT! for some of the best items/stuff you still have to grind and work for it to get it

Is echt ein gutes story rätsel quest mmoprg und auch vereinfacht im gegensatz zum vorgänger.
das problem ist nur der inventarplatz...echt nervt echt auf teufel komm raus tetris spielen zu müssen.
ich hoffe auch das bald die fehlenden inhalte von classic tsw sowie dungen in tokyo usw noch gepatscht werden

Secret World Legends ist ein klassisches MMORPG. Die Atmosphäre, Story und Quests sind richtig gut. Unbedingt ausprobieren!

+ Quests/ Questreihen mit Rätselcharacter (nicht unbedingt für Rätsel-Anfänger)
- manchmal ziemlich schwere Rätsel (...dennoch cool)

+ Grafik/ Ambiente/ viele liebevolle düstere Details
+/- Soundeffekte kommen über Headset besser als über Monitorlautsprecher

als Spieler sage ich:
- nur 1 Character-Slot/ Anspielen unterschiedlicher Klassen/ Fraktionen benötigt entweder Löschen des Chars oder man kauft über Echtgeld sich weitere Slots

als Softwareentwickler sage ich: ...aber irgendwie muss man ja Geld verdienen, um die Miete zu bezahlen ;-)

Game is alright to play through as a single / co-op player experience. The Game seems practically dead and steam activity reflects that (50-80 people online at a time). The story is great but if you're looking for an in-depth and rich MMO End-game experience then I suggest you look elsewhere.

I played the original TSW back prior to SWL release, and just got around to picking this up. I intended to play it as a single player RPG, and in this regard, the game is worth a play through. The quests, atmosphere, and story are all fantastic. Nearly all elements of the MMO side of the game are barren, so I would shy away from this if that is the goal. However, when played as a single player experience, I think it is worth it.

There are definitely some serious 'pay-to-accelerate' aspects to the late game grind, but I stayed away from there. I did pony up for one month of patron (mostly for the daily loot box key and free teleports) since the play through was worth a bit of money to the devs. Otherwise, I just played till I completed all the story, then put it down. Worth the 60-80 hours of fun going through all the quests, especially as a FTP game.

BEFORE WE STARTING REVIEW...

We gotta be honest: this is one of most unique MMO's you can find out there. But having unique universe and story is enough to carry whole game? Thats the question im gonna answer today: time to start...

MAIN STORY IS GOOD?

Its best part of game, aside from quest designs main story itself is pretty interesting and unique. Its have a lot of smilarity from Lovecraftian theme and its pretty good. And having different approach for story because of your faction is pretty good detail aswell.

HOW ABOUT MAIN AND SIDE QUEST DESIGNS?

Main stories and side stories don't give any different feeling than each other and they are not enjoyable. Its just like: ''Go and repair these cameras.'' or ''Go and kill this enemies.'' etc. And honestly after pretty well made prologue i was waiting someting better but it was disappointed a lot... Sadly main and side quests are literaly kills all fun. Yes story itself well made but for reaching that story content you need make these annoying chore-like quests and its not enjoyable at all. They should have choice better quest design's than this terrible old school chore-like quest designs...

IS IT PAY TO WIN?

Yeah... Sadly our game is heavily P2W... You can buy everyting with real money, i mean it: EVERYTING! You can even buy skill points (AP) and literaly have every skill from the very begining of game and its just damn annoying... Even you want play game only for story its still bothers you to know DEV's doing heavily P2W game without any shame...

HOW ABOUT GAMEPLAY?

Our game made in 2017 and for 2017 its have average MMO gameplay. Its not someting good but its not terrible either. Couple of weapons less enjoyable than others and couple of them is more enjoyable than others but generaly its kind of average. But we are in 2022 and for 2022 its not enjoyable, hit feeling of weapons are pretty weak and you can't feel you are giving damage to your enemy at all and while skills are pretty cool without good hit feeling its just feels boring.

HOW MANY CLASS WE HAVE?

We have 9 different class you can choice but you are not forced to use the class you choice until endgame. Every class have two weapon, skills (even passive ones) tied to these weapons and you can change your weapons after some progress. So you are free to play other classes weapons and use their skills (of course you need grind or pay money for it.)

HOW ABOUT SKILLS AND SKILL TREE?

Every active and passive skill is tied to weapons so its more like ''Weapon Skill Tree'' and we have 9 different skill tree. Your character can have two different weapon so it means from start of game you gonna have 2 passive and 2 active skill tree you can progress and honestly i like skill tree and skills a lot while gameplay is not good enough to carry them...

HOW ABOUT OUR OPEN WORLD?

Its good enough to carry story details but not good enough to remember i gues? :D

HOW ABOUT GRAPHIC QUALITY?

They are pretty good for 2017, and even for today they do look average and not that bad. Better quality would be far amazing to show how well designed these unique creatures and world but... Yeah its not bad.

OUTCOME EVALUATION

Its pretty unique game with well made story, skill tree and details but it suffers from having boring ASF quest designs, pay to win system and boring gameplay. I realy love to see another version of this game with remaking bad parts i told, it would be pretty darn amazing and probably would be one of best MMO's you can find but we all know its not gonna happen...

I'd really like to recommend this game, but the grind was real for me. I played for 9 hours and was still in the starter town. The concept is great, I really wish there were more MMO's set in an Urban Fantasy setting. But honestly I'd like to have been able to get out of the starting area quickly and explore what else there is for the game to offer.

Community is dead as far as I can tell. Its really sad. Had so much potential.

If you are an aspiring game developer I highly recommend checking out their mission system as there really isn't anything like it in regards to exploration, investigation, and puzzle design.

I can't tell how much I love this game's storytelling and it's narratives. But my god, if only they made this game singleplayer instead of MMO, it would've been the game of the year for storytelling.
The fighting system tends to get tedious and boring, not so engaging. Not to mention some quests are just outright obnoxious and requires you to use the internet to solve them.
And the performance is downright awful, I HAD to minimize this game windowed in order to get better frames. And that's not an achievement, it's just a reminder of how terrible this game optimization is.
One day, I REALLY wish someone picked this up, remade this whole god damn game from the scratches, with better fighting mechanics and maybe change up the quests a little to make it bearable. Until then, I can only dream about it so much.

Got pumped to play this game and see what it was all about. Unfortunately, after almost an hour I've yet to get that chance due to the game crashing every other minute. Haven't gotten out of the opening scene...

Secret World Legends, the last remaining gasp of breath from a mismanaged IP and a slightly quirky but amazing game.

The original Secret World was one of the most anticipated MMO launches I've looked forward to. I was so into it and believed it would succeed, I purchased the lifetime sub immediately (think it was like $200-250 at the time).

Yes the game had issues. It played even worse than LOTRO, a game that came out 5 years early and was even dated it's self in the control scheme at it's launch. It was clunky, the graphics weren't incredible, and it focused heavily on story instead of the normal 'carrot on the stick' gear grind.

But it had soul. It crafted this fantastic world of conspiracy theories and secret societies. It laid the groundwork where every legend, every ghost tale, every murmured folktale was true. And protecting the waking world from these horrors were three organizations, each with their own goals and desires. The music and those not so good graphics were used exceptionally well, crafting an immersive dive into the darker side of what life might be.

And it was all propped up by a fairly exceptional, if not entirely intuitive, skill building system. Weapon combinations, massive skill trees, your normal RPG equipment grind, all of it lead to a fairly deep MMO for the time. Yeah the animations were a bit off for a lot of weapons, but the game could engross you to the point you would ignore that.

Now we have SWL.....and it's a soulless husk of what came before it. The clunky combat still exists, despite that being the main selling point of the reboot, and on top of it they've added weird mechanics to each weapon. The massive skill trees have been shrunk, they've cut out massive parts of the world and some of the lore. They've added an insane lockbox system, even hampering players by making them dish out obscene amounts of money for things as simple as bag space. It is the prime example of how F2P is a detriment to gaming. They also royally screwed fans who bought the lifetime sub. Yeah you get some benefits, but the game is designed to rape your wallet simply to have a fun gaming experience. And the item grind is now such a chore, it takes away from the few remaining good points this IP/Game had.

Avoid this like the plague. If you're a new or even returning player, the only thing you'll find here is frustration and disappointment.

Good, unique game.
Played this years ago and loved it. Thought I'd chk out the new Legends version.
Same game but much easier. Enemies use to be tough but there were always people doing the same quests which helped. I supposed they made it easier for low population.
The puzzles are still as hard though but you can always look up the answers on the internet if you get stuck.
Same problem with DX11 crashing once in awhile but DX9 is smooth as silk.
As far as PTW, there are cash shop items to eliminate some grind but thats not PTW thats just being lazy. Do the work and you can get everything for free.

Secret World Legends - Part 1 - Let's Play

Secret World Legends has one of the best environments and world building I have ever seen in an MMO. Playing as an Illuminati, the story has been amazing so far and the characters have been very interesting. This game and its story telling has been completely my time and playthrough so far. The gameplay is very simple but fun enough for killing mobs. The game can be completely played Free2Play too.

Literally unplayable. It says I have ~2 hours of playtime, but about 75% of that was spent crashing, googling for potential fixes, trying to log back in and then crashing again.

EDIT: Running the client in Windows 7 compatibility fixes the crashes.
The setting/mood, especially the voice acting and the lore is so good. Combat mechanics are a distraction from the great package of world-building, setting, and voice acting.

Most of the negative reviews for this game are from people complaining that this is different from the original Secret World. That's true, but also, the original Secret World still um, exists? Honestly, what are they complaining about? The original game is right there, you or they can play it any time you want.

What this game is in comparison is a simplified, less grindy version of the original, with all story content available for free. For example, the original game had an obnoxious grindwall in the later episodes of the story through the Aegis system, which gave enemies damage-sponge shields that could only be effectively damaged through massive grinding for unlocks in the Aegis system. It comes out of nowhere and there really isn't a good reason for it other than artificially prolonging the content. This was about where I - and a lot of other players - dropped the game. That system was removed in Legends.

The story really is the main draw of this game so if that's what you're here for, then this is the better version. In the original most of the story content is from paid-for expansions, so it will cost you quite a bit to experience it all. If you want something more complex with better pvp and build diversity, then play the original.

Either way, this isn't an MMO that you'll typically want to spend years and years on - new content is few and far between, so once you reach the end that's pretty much it. It's an enjoyable enough ride while it last though.

A long time ago I was part of beta team for this game, I often like to return to games after a while for nostalgia if nothing else. It pains me to see how this game has fallen, I really had so much hope for it but now it fails with crippling bugs in the very tutorial of the game. If a game does not load even the tutorial in it's entirety I would view it as a warning. It is a shame...I really do love this game.

It's a shame how this game came to be. I used to play The Secret World and not only they removed vital content from the previous game (without the player's consent) but also turned the game into a freaking pay-to-win show.

This is utterly disappointing. If you want to progress in the game, be ready to pay or else grind yourself to death.

Such a sad thing to do in a game worthy of more than that, Funcom. You just ruined a game that has potential. I feel sorry to the original devs

I used to love this game. The atmosphere, story, environments, characters, everything just rubbed me the right way. But sadly, as so many developers do, Funcom dropped the ball.

If there was a way to release this as just a single player game without the store i would recommend it in a heartbeat. But as it stands it's another example of a good game gone bad.

This game is like if Uncharted and Cyberpunk had a baby, and it grew up to be an MMORPG. It's placed in modern time (which I love), and it is overflowing with lore about secret societies and mythology. In terms of TV/movies, it is similar to the show Heroes, and the Matrix movies.

I could not praise this game enough, it is INCREDIBLE! I almost didn't try it because it had mixed reviews, but I am SO GRATEFUL that I did, because it is a masterpiece. It is so rare that I find a game with a truly captivating story line. I am an infamous cut scene skipper, but in this game, I read every single piece of lore that crosses my screen.

Since the reviews almost lead me to not trying it, I want to address the reason why those reviews likely exists - the game crashes... but hey, don't sweat it, it's such an easy fix, when you first load up, immediately go and change the graphics setting down from Ultra, and switch from DirectX11 to DirectX9. Problem Solved, no more crashes. I sincerely hope that people can look past this minor inconvenience and actually try the game, you won't regret it, it's captivating AF <3 Big props to the devs! I am absolutely loving this game.

The story of this game is amazing. the lore you can find by reading the honeycombs is so rich and misterious. Although I miss some gimmiks from tsw-classic, I really love the smooth combat-system now. it feels more intuitif. Also I find the f2p really fair (although i switched to sub because i just love the game)

little tipp for those who can't get the game too run: switch from directX11 to directX9. this fixed my problems immediately.

Found this game online and the story sounded interesting, so I picked it up. So far i'm enjoying the story. Combat's a little repetitive, but it's an MMO, so par for the course. Word of warning: game is buggy as hell and will crash randomly. I managed to make it work by going to the SecretWorldDX11.exe file and editing the Properties to run compatibility for Windows 8, but it might not work for everyone

The character progression was dumbed down dramatically from the original vision, combat system is trying so hard to be like an action combat system when its not, and the pay to win plagues the game in almost every aspect of it. Not to mention that this game is dead as hell and you might find one other person out in questing areas if you're lucky.

Word of advice: If you treat this game like a single player game and ignore all temptation to spend money on it you MIGHT have a good time, otherwise don't bother with this game.

You could get rid of the endgame and the MMO aspect, and it would still be worth playing just for the incredible leveling experience, writing and atmosphere. Quests are so fun and feel like the kind you find in real life escape room puzzles.

I wish they would make a fully fleshed out, single-player RPG like what CD Projekt Red did with Witcher 3.

Can we just go back to the Secret World before the unnessesary relaunch. The new content isnt really worth it in comparision to the content that is missing and generally higher quality. I mean the Aegis system was annoying but id rather have that than the lootboxes being normal drops.
I played this game when it was in beta and it makes me sad that Funcom or whoever they are wont let us go back to TSW unless we edit some weird code into a file. I shouldnt of written this review since im just in weird nostalgic mourning. Im favoriting those mission cutscenes on youtube though because id honestly feel terrible if the story was just scraped and forgotten.

Wanted to play a Lovecraft style MMO...
This game feels ooooold...it crashed on me constantly during character creation and after.
Tried the client version. Same crashy-ness.
I really wanted to like it. Just couldn't.

Anyway....
The character creation leave tons to be desired.
...and it crashes on 2021 Helios 300...Steam version and Funcom version.

That's about all I can say.

Long, long time ago this game was simply great. But due to bugs and random crushes that the developer chose to not fix nor address at all - the player base started to dissappear like a melting snow...
It's worth a try, hell yes, but after a few hours it begins to be boring (if you will manage to play that long without crashes, glitches etc).

First of all: I've played this A LOT and I actually enjoyed it most of the time.

There's two main reason I can't recommend it, (even thought a lot of it is free to play):
- The devs have stopped maintaining the game (it's a crashy bugfest client-wise and an endless grind of the same stories endgame-wise). This has only gotten worse when they went from TSW to SWL as there's now a crap ton of micro-transaction barriers :-/
- This needed to be a single player game OR an instanced game with invite to world options at the very least. The games' strength is in it's stories, how said stories are told and the world building... Not in being an MMO.

Anyways, if you can make it work (as in not crash to shit) I would probably recommend you play f2p solo until there's no more story because it really is that good imo. But I doubt anyone can get this buggy mess to run without crashing at least a few times each session :-/

As I have enjoyed the game in the past, I have installed it again in hope I'll experience the same... What a disappointment. 30+ crashes over 4 hours of trying. Game reinstall, different video settings, Nvidia drivers...
The game crashes randomly... At loading screens, dodge use, sprint ability. Can't believe it's happening in 2021... and how can anyone be tempted to purchase another Funcom game.

the game looks cool and the setting is interesting but I cant get more than a few minutes without running into a LOT of Lag and then crashing, especially during cutscenes.

The game is pretty unplayable right now, if it gets some support check it out but otherwise go play something else

I have 130+ hours in the game. I have enjoyed my time. But the game is on life support and they do not even have the /petition function working in the game. I must crash 2x a session that I play. I am running a RTX 3080 with 32 gigs of ram and an 4.0 ghz 12 core 10th gen I-9. Save your time and money.

Once upon a time, years ago, this game was the bee's knees.

It's fallen into disrepair since. Glaring bugs, like cutscene glitches and game crashes, have gone unfixed since 2017/2018. It is obvious that this game was abandoned by it's developers, which is heartbreaking because (unlike AOC: Unchained) it was a cinematic masterpiece from start to end.

The love is simply gone, and it shows.

I couldn't even load the game. This game has been on several top F2P MMO videos, and several other videos as an honorable. It has recieved accolades for it's ingenuity and setting, and yet.... Here's the bad news...

As old as the game is (I pull over 1000fps on it), It doesn't play well with modern systems. It just crashes over and over. I couldn't get past character creation. Although I truly wish I could have experienced this game and brought you a more detailed review and such... unfortunately my PC just won't hold hands with the game long enough. I have troubleshot the situation and figured out it may be DirectX 11 messing with the game, but unfortunately that would mean I have to either run it in a sandbox or backpedal just to play. I refuse to do that.

TL:DR If you have a very nice PC and want to relive or just experience older MMO's for the first time... this game will NOT work. It is supposed to run on potatoes, and *requires* said potato to run. New systems crash... repeatedly.

I recommend this game as a one time Single player experience for the story, atmosphere and superb questing. There are hundreds of hours of story content that's totally worth it here!

If you are looking for an MMO to invest a lot of time in endgame progression then this game is not for you. The endgame revolves around a pay2win grindfest of the same content for years to slightly increase your Item Power. There hasn't been any new content in ages and it doesn't seem to be anytime soon.

The original game was outstanding. This is a hollow disgrace that screwed a lot of people out of a lot of time and money. I would sooner try to play Aion again before coming back to this, which is saying something as Aion has become a complete dumpster fire over the years.

Decent mmo ruined by a greedy company and buried under false promises, funcom has done a scummy move trying to milk this game and shafted it's veteran player base in the process while still finding a way to make the game worse than the original.

The strong suit of TSW is the story & missions, so you can still enjoy those as a free to player

But be warned that everything is gated behind a false free to play model, that penalises you heavily for not paying a monthly vip sub or forking big amounts of cash to unlock and upgrade your end game gear.

Actually still one of the most enjoyable MMOS to play.

Its crucial (for me anyway) to switch to Direct X9. Otherwise it chrashes every 5 minutes.

I loved revisiting Kingsmouth, and re-live the fantastic Stories and Atmosphere of The Secret World.
Not as challenging with my new character as I remember, who feels a bit OP with hammer and swords. But, Whatever, that means I can really focus on the Storytelling and immersion.

Played it with friends when it was buy-to-play, and then revisited it as a F2P on Steam.

The script (and make no mistake, SWL takes pride in being a story-driven thing) is filled with all the mythos pastiches and saturday morning cartoon tropes you can expect from a 90s kid's imagination. At its best moments It feels like a nice urban fantasy fanfic in a form of an interactive movie, paying homage to everything the target audience (me included) loves, from King's novels to Raimi's early flicks to acknowledging all the world's myths as truths. At its worst SWL succumbs to being a (perhaps) decidedly campy cringe-fest, thinned with prolonged sections of field combat that, sadly, can only be called servicable, despite the prominent ability wheel and some freedom in character building.

The credit is still due here, Funcom tried hard to produce a different MMO than those available at the time, and succeeded (to an extent). My recommendation is that you try it. While seemingly amateurish, it definitely has its moments and gives off a rather nice vibe, providing you with enough (free) entertainment, if Miscatonic University zombie co-eds and immoderately verbose Egyptian Gods still hold a special place in your tired old heart after all these years.

Fun game, though seems population is very top heavy and on the low side. Stories are interesting and it's one of the few Lovecraft themed multi user games out there. Has it's quirks and crashes occasionally but usually a restart fixes it. I like the open ended/classless system as it allows you to explore and not commit to a single path as a newb that might not know what is and isn't your style in the game.

This game honestly had so much potential.

I remember seeing it in an issue of the Game Informer magazine way back when. I think it was actually advertised in the same issue as the original Fortnite (Back before the game was even out and the Battle Royale cancer swept through the industry) and it sounded like such an awesome idea for an MMO.

And it is... or, was.

While it's gameplay is a little stunted and janky by modern standards, the Story was never bad, even if it was cheesy. Even now, in 2021, there are sidequests in this game here that make main story quests in all other MMOs look like trash by comparison.

While I cannot really reccommend The Secret World, or this rebirth, Secret Word Legends as a game for you to seriously sit down and make a main game out. If you somehow wound up on this page and are on the fence: Check it out.

It's janky, the menus are sometimes uncooperative and I cant really condone the state of the cash shop in it: The game is actually a fairly good time. It's worth jumping in to and poking at for a little while at a time. You might even find yourself falling in to the same nostalgia traps that I have when I peek back behind the curtain and see the world again.

A cozy little MMORPG that got forgotten before its time. Lovely atmosphere and lore that feels like a mix of Gaiman and Lovecraft, lonely and emotive. The combat makes good use of your creative builds, forcing you to move around and swap targets quite a bit.

Granted, I'm partial due to the fact that I've played this game off-and-on since the beta in 2011. I always come back to The Secret World.

SWL is still a decent game. The story is second to none and there is a strong atmosphere running throughout the entire game.

For anyone looking to get into it? I would highly suggest approaching it for what it is: A shared world Action RPG meant to be played in short bursts. It's very grindy, but gives you quite a bit of freedom in how your character is built and the activities you can participate in. The game itself is not dead, still boasting a reasonable playerbase. However, this is not main MMO material anymore; it never really was. It's a niche game with some fun features. Worth it as a side game to sink your teeth into every now and again.

For anyone who cares:

PROS

- Great storyline
- Unique atmosphere and locations
- Investigation Missions allow you to delve into real world lore in a way most other games don't allow for.
- Quite a lot to do within the world itself, from missions to little diversions like the Agent System, Dark Agartha, and Occult Defense
- A small, but dedicated fanbase

CONS

- Not VERY well populated
- Barely any PVP to speak of
- Endgame is fairly lackluster and very grindy
- Still missing content from the old version

As a solo story experience? Absolutely. As a full-time MMO? Probably not. I play this game for the writing, mystery, worldbuilding and engaging combat. I even have a secondary character for different faction just to get more flavor text and different perspective, thats how much I am engaged. For this experience, the patron subscription for a month or two is definitely worth it, makes life much more convenient; but due to the amount of microtransactions and the way they are implemented in the game, I would not consider playing SWL long-term. Once I experience every nook and cranny I will leave with a good feeling

Game is pretty much abandoned. Devs created no big content for a long time. Communication between devs and community don't exist. Graphic engine is broken. PvP is non existent. Finding a group for dungeons will take hours.

There are still lots of bugs, and devs are ignoring it. Especially CTD due to DirectX 11.

But story is good, and you can solo whole content (except dungeons) with free package.

Even switching to DirectX9, the lag and crash barely 5 minutes in became unbearable. I really tried and attempted to make various settings adjustments, but I'm done. The load times alone were horrendous for me, and I have a fairly new Alienware desktop with an updated GPU.

I really wanted to try this game out and enjoy it, but can't really recommend something I am unable to easily play out the gate. FFXIV, Genshin, and other games run no problem so can't be my rig. Sorry y'all, way to get me interested enough to try though ;)

It's just as slow and boring as the original launch but, now in pay to win format. You can literally buy ability points for cash. $10 to unlock a second character. If you don't like the pre-made classes, first additional weapon unlock is 5k game monies but next one is THIRTY THOUSAND... I'd hate to see what it costs after that, most likely forces you to fork over cash to get more at some point. Having paid for the first launch gives you no benefits in this.

It also runs just as crappy as original launch of The Secret World... on lowest settings on a good PC it is super choppy as you run around. Downloaded the full client (in launcher options) it crashes on Dx11 so you have to play Dx9 or do some weird .ini crap or manual tweaking of your Nvidia card settings. it feels like it's trying to stream load all the game assets as you walk and it has to display new stuff. There's a reason we called the publisher Failcom instead of Funcom.

I played quite a bit of Secret World before it turned into Secret World: Legends and ended up on Steam. After a few hours of toying with Legends, I can't fathom how Funcom let a disaster like this past beta testing. On a 1080GTX rig, the game crashes regularly - every half hour or so. The frame-rate is choppy, despite gigabit speeds, and sometimes, post-crash, you'll log back into find yourself wandering underneath the shell of the game-world.

I want to love this game - The story is very unique, and while the combat and mechanics are dated, it has a charm to it. Funcom is great at that. But, goodness, in 2021, this game is unplayable.

Like most people who played the game at launch pre-legends, the core of what we liked about TSW was removed. Specifically the skill wheel. The ability to make your own builds along with the problem solving was changed to fit a broader market. Not only is Legends boring, having played the previous version to death but now it's also a theme park. This was clearly an adult's mmorpg. I'm not sure if the pre-legends version of the game is still available but I'd highly suggest you go there instead for the real engaging experience instead of this cheapened fly by.

I've messed off an on with the original Secret World, and I dipped my toes in Legends a couple years ago. Yesterday, I thought, what the heck, let's give it another shot!

Today I have experienced more technical errors than I consider acceptable for a game. The game crashed two or three times during character creation alone, and while the tutorial went fine, I keep clipping through the map of the starter area Kingsmouth Town: not only do I fall through the map, but my character also simultaneously speeds through the entire map at light speed. My only option being to die (teleporting on F2P has a recharge wait), then resurrect, then clip through the map again when I step forward.

These kind of bugs are acceptable in the first year of a game as complex as an MMO, but Legends has been out for years. It's honestly disappointing because so few MMOs have attempted to be as story driven as TSW was. Oh well.

The Secret World was, without exaggeration, one of the best MMOs that ever existed.

It didn't fail to deliver as a game. Funcom failed to deliver as a company for more reasons than this box will allow me to discuss. Humanity failed to appreciate a game with this level of depth and immersion. But Secret World itself was one of the most revolutionary and special things I have ever seen in an MMO and, sadly, will likely ever see in my lifetime.

I'm reinstalling Secret World Legends right now for nostalgia's sake. It is a palest shadow of the original. It is that disappointing hit of methadone, that shirt of hers you kept long after the memory turned grey, and that last concert you saw right before the band broke up. It is all of those things and more.

This isn’t a game. It’s a mausoleum dedicated to expectations exceeded, to unrepentantly tricky puzzles, and to cherished old friendships. But none of that exists anymore; just the memory and the infrastructure.

No one should follow me where I go now.

TSW was a great game with a well voiced dialog which could be felt in nearly every npc interaction helping to give depth to even the simplest of characters found through out the game world. Mixing that with a deep and fantastic world building this should of been an amazing game, and it was. That is until the developers turned the game free to play. With free to play came free to play cash grabs such as a cash shop in the world tree of all places. Like a place that was supposed to hold great significance in the lore is now hosting a cash shop. Among things they also removed alot of the dialog and cutscenes from the minor npc quest givers for reasons i dont understand. Like i can understand if the population wasnt the best or they had a real reason to need to make the game f2p but at the very least they shouldnt of ruined the pre existing content and world building they had already developed, id rather see a cash shop as a web addon or in each of the major towns. Overal this game was a gem that the devs shattered.

I highly recommend The Secret World (now called: Secret World Legends) for its story, characters, game play and Funcom's commitment to keeping its world accessible even when their games become too obscure to continue developing content for.

This is by far the most unique game I've played, no other game tries to capture horror in this way - no simple jump scares, no unneeded gore or shocks, just an incredible, detailed narrative and world that sucks you in and shows you what is behind the curtain of your reality. It's little surprise that a primary writer was Ragnar Tornquist (Longest Journey/Dreamfall) as its clear that everything was planned to the detail, with game play providing small hints to what is actually boiling beneath the surface.

The characters really shine as they are the vehicle of the main story - There isn't traditional quest hub text that shows up telling you to kill 10 bears, instead you are presented with a voiced cinematic from a NPC - often not providing any specific direction but more of general idea of the task and the mission hints providing a logical next step, which allows for some entertaining and eccentric performances.

There are even multiple ways of achieving the goals put forth depending on the mission type,
Combat: The most direct - but still with some unusual elements and mechanics. Simple and most akin of other games.
Sabotage: A primary stealth related task, bypassing camera dead zones, avoiding patrols and traps and achieving goals with a minimum of combat. All enemies in the game have a line of sight that can be avoided even outside of these missions.
Investigation: A unique type of mission where you will mostly have to piece togeather clues on your own via research in real life (wikipedia articles on 1800's artists, environmental clues, translations, decoding morse code, pop culture knowledge) to solve the steps - achieving these missions without use of external hints gives you a real sense of accomplishment (Note: Not EA's version) as they are puzzles the developers didn't dumb down and had faith in their audience.

Gameplay has changed over the years but still has its core of two weapons used in tandem with unique mechanics involved, as well as the classic holy trinity of Tank, Healer, DPS for the group activities. The entire story and every mission can be accomplished solo which bring me to a misconception about this game, it is not a MMO unless you want it to be - The play areas are kept sparsely populated via instancing to maintain the atmosphere (unless you decide to play the dungeons - which are really good too) meaning that even if you are not a social player there is a really great solo rpg game hiding in this title.

The primary and only negative aspect of the game is in the form of advertising, or lack thereof. Funcom routinely fails to advertise its games properly and as a result they are always niche products not getting the attention and funding (via purchases) they deserve, and eventually having a player base death - which means less given the solo-ability of the title... Funcom has since ceased narrative development for this game, it is keeping the lights on and having scripted seasonal events, but the story ends at a certain point (content finishes). Regardless of this fact I am thankful I can still return to play this game so many years after and relive the content that does exist.

I just hope anyone who reads this doesn't miss out - (bring a friend or two if you can for even better experience)

I cannot recommend this game anymore. I played it when it first came out before it went Free-to-play, and it worked fine, even if it was difficult to get through the missions at times.

Now I try to go back in, and it's so laggy I can't even get between missions: It's messy, difficult to navigate, and no longer the experience I enjoyed.

AMAZING concept. Great atmosphere. Shit engine. Shit controls. Combat, which you'll be doing a lot of is clunky, so is general movement etc.

If they got a brand new engine and redid all animations and assets and got it the graphical fidelity of modern MMO's combined with the tight responsiveness of something like WOW, this would easily be a top tier game.

As it is now, I can only recommend it for all you spooksters out there due to an interesting story, setting and atmosphere.

Nice sci-fi horror cthulhu-esqu mmo.
Stories are interesting and engaging. Adult themes and humour, not corny like some of the superhero ones.
Loot system seems to be pay-to-win orientated, but it's shortcut, not a necessity.
Having fun as a free-to-play.

I have a soft spot in my heart for this game . I really do. The storyline, voice actors, settings, all are fantastic. This could have been a monumental MMO. But it got dropped like a hot rock by its owners and gradually drifted its way toward maintenance mode. I come back every year for Halloween, because the feel in Kingsmouth is just fantastic. But , unfortunately, for all intents and purposes, the game is dead.d If I ever won the lottery, I'd buy this IP in a heartbeat, remake the game , and put it on Netflix as a series.

I loved Secret World. I didn't play everyday, but would play 1-2 days a week. Fun dungeons, fun leveling, just fun gameplay. It really is a shame how much I liked it, because that game I'm talking about? GONE, replaced by this shitshow. The whole game, as far as I've played, is based on RNG. All previous progress reset. Funcom, or whoever is behind this stupid decision, should be ashamed. Bring back Secret World

While the Veterans' gripes about lack of new content are certainly right(I myself would like more content) there is still something to be said to new players:

The game is great.

The story it presents is one of a kind and very fun to play through.
Being f2p you can just jump in and have as much fun as you want and quit whenever; the game certainly doesn't need any kind of moneyspending to be fun and difficulty isn't an issue for 95% of content.

I want to point out that if you're looking for a classical MMO SWL might fall short. There isn't any competitive end-game raiding to be done and you'd be much better off if you think of it as a vast single-player game that has coop functions if you need them or want to play with friends. You can grind out gear if you're into that and there is some tough content to be found but that's probably not what will make you stick around.

Take your time exploring the world, dive into some of the most challanging puzzle/riddle quests ever and don't skip any of the cutscenes, there is great stuff to be found here.

Also, should you find yourself in Illuminati headquarters, say hi to Ms. Geary for me, she said I'd get something nice for recruiting new members.

I had originally put my review as recommended. But after seeing how badly I have criticized this game in this review, and seeing how negatively I felt about so many of the changes from the original I felt putting no was more accurate, unfortunately.
It pains me heavily to tell you not to play this, however considering this is free to play you have nothing to lose regardless. The Secret World was for many years the best MMO I had ever played. It was so good it had totally taken my attention away from World of Warcraft, not to mention I was a massive horror fan and this was the only horror themed MMO I had ever seen. The game features a superbly written and unique storyline steeped in rich H.P Lovecraft inspired lore as well as inspiration from Stephen King.
While not shying away from its original storyline and themes, Secret World Legends is an unfortunate shadow of it's masterpiece of a predessor, The Secret World.
I don't know where to even start with this. But I'll begin with the combat. The Secret Worlds combat was possibly the second biggest draw for the game. A unique combat system that did not have the generic run of the mill energy or stamina based attacks. Instead, your weapon had roughly 6 combo points, can't exactly remember. You had an ability builder that would build these, and then a finisher that would spend all points in a single use. While some might argue that the newer system allows for several finishers to be used in succession, I feel it took away from great feel of the builder and finisher synergy and the rapid speed at which you could dish out finishers in amazing succession. Whip out a couple builders and then a spender in a few seconds. The newer combat system takes much longer to get things done I feel. The older system also allowed for two different weapons to build each others combo points, allowing you to use two different finishers from 2 different weapons on an enemy, which made the weapons work so much better with each other no matter the combination. Secret World Legends took this away, and made so many unwanted changes to the combat.
You are also unable to choose your own weapon combinations, unlike the original, the game forces you into premade classes which do not let players test desired weapon combinations. I was fortunate enough to have had played the original and gained access to TSW perks in legends which includes unlocking all weapon types immediately.
Onto cosmetics. The Secret World has such an amazingly unique gear and customization system. All clothing is solely aesthetic, you can wear whatever you want, whenever you want. This hasn't changed. However, what has changed is how you OBTAIN cosmetics now. Through an all-in-one store that is built into the dressing room. You buy cosmetics with Black Bullion (BB) or Aurum which is traded with BB or bought with real money. BB is obtained from daily challenges. Subscribers earn 20% more BB from sources, so the rate at which you earn is drastically increased. The entire game shares this one currency, which makes obtaining other things an annoying chore.
And with my last point, content and updates. I would tell you to not even bother with this game solely based on the fact this game is barely even updated anymore. We have not seen a new expansion or DLC since 2018. Funcom does not communicate with its player base and let them know about upcoming content or updates. The game is also still pretty badly optimized, that has not changed since the original.
With everything being said. I think this game is still worth checking out. But when I look at the former glory of The Secret World, I will still say this game is a disappointing mess of what it's predecessor had made to be so incredible.

After all this time you'd thing they'd try optimizing the game a little bit. I'm running this on a very good computer and it's clipping and crashing like crazy! I guess we can never revisit games that you enjoyed in the past, they always fail to live up to your memories.

I want to like this game, I really do. It has a number of good ideas going for it that if done right, would really make it stand out as an MMO. Unfortunately, ideas and execution are two different things. And this games execution with regards to combat mechanics, graphics, and choice to go micro-transactions make it just too grindy.

Micro-Transactions: It is similar to other “free” MMOs like Star trek Online, whereby you could get things that would be available for purchase, but you need to farm one resource (GRIND, GRIND, and GRIND some more, as you are limited in what you can acquire per day. Which is designed to get you to play every day. Much like any job. Which defeats the purpose of calling it a game, as well as playing it), to buy/sell on a market to get another resource (game credit). And this to get basic things like a second character slot. Signing up for a monthly subscription allows you to get some perks (namely getting more of resource one and two), but that would only allow you to progress faster to endgame, which by what I can see, is not worth the money. And you would skip through a lot of the story, in the process.

Game Execution: While I do like the genre, a lot of the stories and maps need work. There is no feel that you are in an open ended MMO, as much as you are being directed to go to set points in each small map to complete the story mission, to be able to get to the next small map. Add to that the outdated graphics for a game that must be somewhat profitable, as it is still functioning. It makes you wonder if this is some purchased IP that the company running it are using as a cash cow, and couldn’t care less if you played or not. There is always another sucker in the pipe to get impatient and buy stuff. I very much doubt that there is work in progress to improve the overall game to take it out of the early 2000 time capsule it is trapped in. There is just not enough financial incentive.

Gameplay: The UI is not intuitive. Over half of the keys on your keyboard are mapped to separate screens for a never-ending litany of confusing options like reforging this into that. Think Pokémon GO for Katanas. Grind a lower Katana to get “energy” a.k.a Pokémon candies to update your other Katana. There is also the offline farming side quest screen whereby you can send bots/agents off to do quests to farm more Pokémon candies, and resources to convert to other resources, to then convert to another resource, to get towards that goal of getting to have a second character slot. It is a mess. There are LOTs of games doing a much better job at handling complex character advancement and skill trees than this one. You need a key binding guide to remind yourself where everything is just about.

Overall, this game idea has/had a lot of potential with engaging players, but the company managing it clearly has no interest in advancing it to something worthwhile. It is basically an old game that has had the IP used as a slum lords’ property. If one tenant moves out, there is always another to move in. Fix nothing, and rake in the cash.

new combat & craft system added to an already riveting story. challenging investigation mission are balanced with fun combat missions ( not your standard mix of kill and fetch). It would help if i could get the in game web browser to work but that just might be me. I would recommend that you play the secret world at lest once in your life.

I bought The Secret World. I Bought 4 expansions. I BOUGHT Inventory Space. I BOUGHT ... i dunno, a bunch of Other Stuff™. Then I feel like coming back and revisiting the game after like, 5 years, cos I really enjoyed it...

It's now called Secret World Legends. I lost my account. I lost all my cosmetics, my pets, my weapon skins, my gear, my crafting resources... my Inventory Space, my Character Slots. My CHARACTERS. THE Ridiculous amount of time I spent levelling those characters, is also lost. 705 hours. That's how much time. Thanks Steam for helpfully and handily telling me how much time and effort I put into those characters, which is now flushed down the toilet by the decisions of people who are not me.

Do not give this company your money.

I have no clue why they removed the ability to choose your own weapons for creating your class. Now it feels like you have to follow an exact build that feels forced and underwhelming. The game is still great, but I feel the mechanics decisions they took were a step back.

I started playing Secret World upon original release and was really looking forward to it. I lost interest and came back to this 'free to play' model which I've yet to get my head around and lost all progress I made previously, which sucks a fair amount.

The lore is good and game generally is pretty good however, like most MMOs, there is a tedium of grind and the cost of premium content/currency which seems the current model for most of these types of games.

I never got too far into the game however so can not talk about PvP or the end-game of it all.

Worth a try I suppose though.

This just isn't as good as the original, mainly because they got greedy and changed a bunch of stuff. You use to be able to choose whatever two weapons you wanted in the beginning but now you can only choose certain combinations of weapons and then you have to pay real money to unlock the others. They also added this huge tutorial and took away the ability to skip it. You cant try out all the weapons at the start any more so you just have to roll new characters and deal with the obnoxious tutorial and if you do that you have to delete your other one because they took away all but 1 character slot and made the rest unlockable only with real money.

This game does questing better than any other MMO I've played out on the market. The atmosphere building is excellent in this game. I would recommend this game based on the questing and atmosphere of it alone. It's unique to me in the MMORPG world in that way.

Came back to this game hoping to play one of the greatest classless MMO games ever created, what I got was this SHIT.

The new skill system is too simple compared to the old one and it's still too... strange (I wouldnt say complex) for newer players. The talismans... used to require some planning, now they're practically redundant as there's very limited options and a salvage system to level them up.

All the dungeons are tank and spank without any real danger, literally avoid bringing a healer to min/max your group... Making some of the new skill trees somewhat pointless.

It's a mess and it's ruined beyond repair as the community has abandoned it - the charm was the systems it had, it was an old game with some lack of polishing but for the previous release date it was understandable/acceptable.

You'd expect a lot of things to have been adapted so the game felt more responsive but instead you have a reticle targeting system that makes it feel more like a mobile game.

However, if you're completely new to the game, you may find it fun to explore this rich lore fill world with collectables and a good achievement system. If you're looking for a challenge sadly you wont find one here. Lastly it's become more monetised so some repeatable features may lock you out of participating for a certain time unless you pay.

Ultimately I regret trying to get my friends to play this game. After all the old memories of doing the investigation quests and feeling like a leech healer blood tank god, telling them the stories about how investment in the system rewarded you with power beyond expectation, I think I really miss sold it, I miss the old game I'll always cherish the time I invested but the hours associated to this account have no reflection of the Secret World Legends. The Secret World was fantastic but it's dead.

One of the best story driven rpgs Ive played. The combat is better than lock on spells like world of warcraft, the universe is diverse and cool. The concept is bad ass. The cinematics in between aren't high definition, but still great voice actors and better than many other mmorpgs. I'd say its one of my top 3 most liked mmorpgs after playing at least around 10.

This game is what I imagined to be a great game in 2008~. But it got outdated and outgraduated by products that had more budgetting.
With that being said, I still managed to... without spend a single penny, spend 69 hours with someone I held Very Close. I enjoyed the game, and the laughable quest lines and questionable mechanics showed marks of something that had true merit behind.
If you are looking for something the is f2p, and just a game and mmo to get into, this may be something to bite into.

I really found this to be the most enthralling MMORPG I've played. There is so much story and lore that I find myself reading the quest info. Speaking of quests, this one definitely takes the cake for interesting quests. You won't just be stuck going to get stuff and bringing it back, but actually doing active things that pertain to the lore of the area or lore of the game.

NPC questgivers are often fully voiced and even have cutscenes to explain the quests. This is done tastefully, too. Side quests are generally pretty simple and not so time consuming while remaining interesting. The combat system is really active and fun. I don't like the way pistol-wielding looks or operates (as far as basic attacks go), but that's a small complaint against the praises. The leveling or perk-buying is easy and very customizable. I started out as one class and pretty much changed entirely on my own with no penalty.

The game is free to play and you can certainly use all of the features without microtransactions, 100%. It's just a matter of exhanging time for money if you want to buy. This is a game I actually want to give money too, though. The attention to detail shows me that the creators didn't just make this as a money mine for taking gamers' precious coins. I actually *want* to support this game; don't have to. It's just that unique.

I wish more people played this game. If this gem were given a chance, it could definitely be a super popular game and that would make it just 10 times better.

I was cautious to download this game due to reviews claiming bad controls, but Im glad I did. The games story is amazing and fully voiced (uncommon in mmorpgs), the combat is more action based so you dont feel like all your doing is standing there hitting a skill rotation. I highly recommend giving this a download.

Have to honestly say Secret World Legends has been a massive disappointment.

The original Secret World truly was an amazing game with a excellent storyline and fun, if janky, gameplay. The rerelease was poorly executed and is just a downright inferior product. Ask any returning classic player and they will remind you quite quickly how many clothing items, dungeons, and gameplay elements are missing. Not to mention the new combat system being frankly less enjoyable then the old one.

I'm sorry funcom but you didn't do well at all.

You are hit with 3 GB more downaloding after running the game .
Seems really fun, a lot of interactive moments, has a nice story.
Tutorial is also fun which is a miracle.
You have riddles you have to guess, you fight bosses as well.
MMORPG definitely type of game. Check it out

A truly amazing experience! The lovecraftian horrors that lurk and creep about in this expansive world are incredibly interesting. If you like lore, and reading up on the what and why the world has gone to high hell, this is the game for you. The three mission types keeps things interesting, while the main story is enough content to last months on end. Investigative missions really are investigative; different languages and codes to decypher, schematics to look into, and creative thinking make this a memorable game for sure! The game used to be great. But the lack of any update since more than a year basically killed the interest in something that used to promise a very nice game.

Way too neglected, and a very old code, in a brave new world! Very addictive, yet frustrating with all the crashing. In it's day, maybe great, but after they turned it into a cash cow, they forgot to cater to those who got them to where they are.
