I can't recommend this mess it's all over the place.

They tried to make an xcom game with real time combat with a lot more random stuff in it and punishing combat from the start even in normal, not only that, they also managed to make it super boring and super confusing.

Another nail in the coffin is the huge amount of DLC, every screen in game has links to buy DLC as if the entire purpose of the base game was to sell DLC, this is NOT what a game experience should be like.

F for FAILURE.

How the game should be:
Allow all AI toons to have upgrades and different equipment
Loot and crafting system
More control and information during missions
The game shouldn't remind us of xcom all the time
Better optimization
Proper Map signaling and less nonsense containers all over the place
More meaningful pickups
Proper character development and at least some dialogues

I think this game could take a lot of ideas from the game Mercenary Kings, and they could have created a masterpiece instead of this lame dog

Shortly what the fuck is the game about.

Top down moba style rts game.

Your job in the game is to survive through out the waves of zombies and complete them as possibly the most missions you can do.

You can actually compare this game to risk of rain, you try to waste no time on the maps because every mission means more xp but obviously more time you spend on the map the harder it will be but you can actually evac from the map in case you don't trust your self and your team.

From what i think the maps are generated randomly which gives the game a nice replay ability. Obviously there is a nice mission setup where you will set your difficulty and all bunch of sort of things even a map but that is just the theme of it.

The maps are huge, i love it it really feels like you are in middle of a fallen city where surprisingly everyone stores grenades and bullets in their shelfs, i am sure you know this if you have ever played any battleroyale before.

Start of the game usually includes running around for ammo and other items to get as much as you can before it gets rowdy, then only dedicated recons will scout for ammo.

You can drop your items or ammo to other players later on, there is bunch of classes to choose from, you will need to unlock them in the tech tree but that is what this game excels at, it has kind of a big grind but that is what us players want, there is alot of stuff to unlock and even if you prioritize only one class or 2, it should really go quickly with getting some skill points at start.

The game contains campaign, which you can play with players as well or just solo that depends, you can also set the campaign to be in coop mode which means you will have to unlock all the classes and weapons and all sort of modules in the campaign and your tech tree does not count at all, obviously you still get your skill points for the later skirmish.

Skirmish is kinda the main thing, you group up with other 7 people to form 8 man team, you try to hunt daily missions for exp or to get your new rank or just play for fun, your profile has levels but also ranks, ranks don't give much just a neat icon next to your name and very small stat buff to your character, you will still get your levels even if you dont manage to get your rank ups so don't worry about not getting skill points.

At start the game was really confusing for me, i was very unsure of if i will spend my time into it, but i commited and it really opened up and is really fun actually especially the skirmish with players, and shit really is not easy trust me on that.

My most favourite thing in the game is the maps variety and scale and the enviroment it self, on the map there is alot of stuff to do and touch and it really feels alive which is great. the only think i slightly miss is a bit more skins, or camoflagues, obviously every class looks a bit different, you can change colors and the equipment you have on yourself also changed the look but that is pretty much it, the game has like only 4 different patterns that you can use on the armor with some colors but that is all.

I do recommend the game.

What is a good top down shooter meet X-com 2 and went real time instead of turn based, well this baby is Red Solstice 2, it's great in single player, dlc add at least one full campaing replay each, but since you can play many classes ect there's even more replay value, that's for single player, for co-op you got you can play any single player mission with your friends drop-in/droup out mod, full multiplayer called skirmish is where the action really shinnes as what class and what team make up and weapons you take matter a great deal, good team with good voice co-op is a must. all in all it's not perfect but it keeps getting patches and update that keep content fresh and bugs regulary squashed, It's a GEM in the rought, if there's a demo or free week end give it a try, it's got a fairly steep learning curve but plateau after 10 hours or so, It's a steal on discount, i strongly rcomand IF you are a fan of the genre.

RTS Coop Survival Horde

If you are familiar with the Warcraft 3 mod ‘NOTD’, Red Solstice 2 shares similar principles with more modern architectures.

This game is best played with voice chat and through communication, magic happens with class customization, team synergies, doctrines and strategies.

Learning curve is steep with the game mechanics. However, once you have mastered it you will be rewarded for the effort and even the hardest difficulty will feel like a walk in the park.

Really nice looking game in which your squad massacres thousands of mutants (just some Mars mutants, no xmen unfortunately). At first the game looked really easy, but the more I got into it, the more tougher enemies got onto the scene and super easy game turned into fight for your life for every second. This is far more action packed than Xcom, feels more like topdown looking Gears. More I played through it, I found out it is really nothing special, but had enough fun nontheless.

Red Solstice 2 is a bleak ordeal, but it’s not without its charms. There’s a real sense of frantic desperation created as the player scrambles desperately from one mission to the next, helplessly watching the global infection meter always climbing. Whether it’s zombie biomass, sinister corporations, or environmental catastrophe, for the entirety of Red Solstice 2′s play time I was sure that we were only ever a hair’s breadth away from extermination — which only served to make fighting against it feel all the more satisfying. If the developers could ease the repetitiveness from their random mission generator, this would be one of the best successors to XCOM’s legacy, but in its current state it’s just an extremely solid squad-based RTS.

I wouldn't recommend it, but it is a close call and I think there are definitely those out there who might enjoy it. Most likely if you are into casual top-down action or twinstick horde shooters, you would have a better chance of getting into it. Still, I think there are better alternatives for the price. It takes some of the good elements of Starcraft and XCOM, but not enough to really stand on its own in an interesting way.

+Visuals, environments
+Starcraft/RTS-style controls work well
+Skills/abilities for hero and squad
+Optional side missions
+XCOM-style strategy map layer
+XCOM-style research
+Enemy variety
+Voice acting

-Very repetitive, same missions/maps
-Many enemies feel too similar
-Hordes make many enemies uninteresting
-Several objectives are just waiting a timer
-Lots of backtracking needed in missions
-Slow strategic/research pacing
-Story is little and far between

Buggy mess in multiplayer. Random mission objectives not working, evac zones not working, AI teammates randomly to sidestep INTO explosives ... I got this from humble bundle and I thought I'd love it.

Concept and design are really enjoyable, but in a game that is (at it's core) a MP game, bugs like these are unacceptable

A real time tactical combat game where you lead a squad of soldiers on missions across mars to battle gross Dead Space-esque mutant monsters and try to hold off their swarms long enough to figure out a way to defeat them once and for all. There is a real cool core idea with randomly generated missions, and the overall campaign waged across a macro level strategic map where you do research and develop equipment and weapons while trying to keep the mutant infection in check. Unfortunately the strategic level of the game, where your campaign is won or lost, is confusing and underexplained. On top of that I ran into multiple bugs in the combat missions themselves such as completed objectives not registering as completed, or in one case an evacuation point not spawning after I completed the main mission leaving me with no way to exit the map. It's a cool idea with a really rough execution.

I found this game to be a boring, arcady, outdated, and repetitive co-op style isometric shooter that involves tediously clicking on hordes of endless monsters that are more of an annoyance than fun to shoot. There is no inventory system to manage and no manual save, so you must play an entire mission in one playthrough. Prior to missions, you must scan a planet-based map and research for weapons and technologies that I found uninteresting. There is no true single player campaign. It's just the same flat looking maps where you do the same things over and over such as running around from location to location shooting endless monsters and defending areas. Another thing that annoyed me with this game is that it is not properly optimized. I experienced constant frame rate drops with an RTX2080 and i9 processor and in some areas the frame rate really took a dive down into the 40s and remained there until I left that area. Rotating the camera is also not smooth and results in more frame rate drops. Overall, I did not enjoy my time spent with this game and I cannot recommend it.

If you loved playing NOTD in the Starcraft 2 arcade, then this is the game for you. Red Solstice 2: Survivors is a close cousin of HELLDIVERS where an arsenal of DAKKA, teamwork, and resource management are essential to surviving the hordes of martian zombies.

Most of the isssues have been covered by other reviews, the long and short of it is basically that the devs seem to be ignoring issues that have been reported for months and instead are creating DLCs to nickel and dime you just a little bit more before you realise the base-game has very little content and is basically the same map repeated on every level.

If you look through the DLC in the season pass (costs more than the actual game btw), they're mostly things that should have been in at launch to give this game the depth it needs to keep players playing. Otherwise the game barely has as much depth as Alien Swarm, which is FREE and much more fun.

Amazing game, blinked and 8 hours had passed.

+ 8 classes in the base gain (+1 per DLC)
+ A campaign that can be played in co-op (+1 campaign per dlc)
+ Online co-op Skirmish mode with 5-8 other players
+ Progression system with 100+ unlocks
+ Some helpful veterans that help out new players
+ Host can control 3 AI soldiers
+ Don't need the DLC to play with a host who owns it (map/campaign)
~ Be prepared to lose and learn
~ Team killing is a thing (no abuse yet)
~ A game of urgency, don't waste time
~ 1-2 hour long matches
- Progression does take a bit too long (especially AI soldiers)

As the store page says, this is not a twin stick shooter, though you can toggle between auto shoot and manual.

There are many complaints about this game, but most seem to be that they bought it, and it is not a twin-stick shooter like they thought. This, of course, is a silly complaint considering all they had to do was a little homework to figure that one out.

Gameplay is similar to XCOM blended together with a Starcraft II custom map where you take control of a single unit RTS style and guide them through a series of objectives on the map while besieged by neverending waves of nightmarish mutants that want to nibble your giblets. Skirmish throws you right into a scenario of your choosing, whereas in the campaign mode, you take on the role of leading the defense against the planetary infestation of said mutants, researching, fighting, and managing resources as you race against time to win.

It's unlock and leveling systems aren't very fun currently and feel more like a chore than something to keep me playing and the missions get a bit tedious traveling from point A to point B or just sitting on your ass waiting for a side objective to show up and I feel some kind of time compression for single player would be great.

All in all, a fun game that warrants at least a couple dozens of hours on your own and more if you can get friends to join you.

The best 3rd-person-iso-realtime-action-campaign-cooperative-shooter of the last decade in my opinion, very addictive...

Pro:
- mars colony setting
- visit and claim areas on the whole planet (like in XCom visiting continents on earth)
- operation ship inspired by Xcom, great adaption of moving on the planet map like in Xcom
- Great atmosphere
* very detailed graphics which absolutely support the setting of lost colonies/cities
* music is very good at supporting the pressure, the combat action, the unknown, the hordes of mutants, the darkness...)
* Apart from all the other missions types there are story missions and different NPCs that add to the atmosphere

- unbelievable number of:
* different enemy mutant types
* weapons, armor modules, mods and upgrades
* items usable in combat - all make sense, can be gathered during a mission, are crucial for survival

Good replay-value because of:
- many different primary mission types, in addition randomly seeded different submissions, random spawning points
- Very extended research tree
- a lot of different soldier classes which can be upgraded, modded and improved in a lot of different aspects

Contra:
- some missions can get frustrating because of:
- not being able to reach mission objective in time or before being overrun (especially if high infestation levels or HUNTER) because not having/finding explosives for blast doors and not finding any door switches or power stations

Overall:
- runs smooth on both my Pcs (GTX1070, RTX, both have SSDs and modern CPUs - some reviewers are complaining about loading times - well, they probably have no SSD but mechanical HDD...)
- graphics and sounds are superb, as well as the weapon effects and the destruction of the environment
- no bugs and no crashes so far - even with all graphic and sound configurations set to highest quality on 4k Resolution

I ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND this game for all who love constant weapon action, exciting science fiction settings (Mars, cities/colonies in darkness, hordes of enemies, challenging missions, choice of cooperative or single player game play, important decisions about the next research branch or usage of (always too low) supplies...I think I stop here, you get the idea :)

This game had alot of potential. After no real updates and some bad updates the people behind the game, the developers really dropped the ball. No new enemies, weapons or variety of gameplay, the game become boring to play. The official discord was busy and full of players, multiple groups. Now you'll see one or none- I'm sure many that bought the game will feel the same. But if you're a fun of sci-fi you'll get a real good several hours of play.

Great game! The game is fun despite lots of confusion.

Many of item and skill descriptions are unclear and unintuitive. You might have to test them out by your self and may ended up failing some missions. It can be hilarious... or frustrating. But once you get a hang of it, you can really enjoy the game.

There are tons of things to do. Many classes to try. Many roles to play. The game is so in depth that one might have to spend a lot of time to actually understand what to do or master a class.

Playing with friends is highly recommended. Not that single player is not fun. It is fun, but even more so with friends. The more the merrier!

Hope this help,
See you in game!

Love the game as its a great successor to RS1, needs more random primary missions to add variety, and the bug fixing is welcome when it comes as they are often game breaking such as team wipe from rockets colliding with silly items like lamp posts or drones.
needs some weapon balancing as boring gun Meta is boring..

p.s hint get on the discord server for better games, this is alot more fun on coms.

Huge improvement over the first game. Gameplay is enjoyable and difficulty ramps up quickly at higher levels of infestation. Campaign map is not explained well enough (at all?) and story feels like a side show. Research and gear unlocks are not clear... XP for ranking up is kind of shared between single-player / campaign mode and skirmish mode, but there is no visual indicator to explain or highlight this... essentially, in single player you unlock gear and weapons through campaign research, but if you join your buddy's campaign (in skirmish mode) you are using unlocks exclusively through gear and skill point allocation.

If you enjoyed playing the StarCraft 2 mod this game series originated from or any StarCraft 2 type zombie survival Use Map Settings / Arcade game types, then you will probably enjoy this game. Pick it up on a sale at the very least... then message me if you want a wingman because I'm always down to play this game.

The game isn't finished and it released too early, It should probably still be listed as early access.

Balance changes are being made among weapons and classes, chunks of content that probably should have been present at launch are in development. Lots of mission ending bugs still around. The devs seem to patch pretty often and have an active discord so maybe they'll get it hammered out.

My experience was 100% in solo campaign mode and it just wasn't well put together.

The campaign mode is an Xcom 2 map laid over what feel like multiplayer quickplay missions. Outside of the few main story set-piece missions, they're all randomly generated with 1 main objective and infinitely generating side missions as you do the actual top down shooting. I'm OK with that as a concept but there's like 5 of these objective types and they all boil down to go here and shoot. There's even fewer maps to do these limited number of missions on. I ended my 30 hour campaign when it became 5 runs of an identical mission back-to-back as my colonies got infested.

The combat might as well be a timed on-rails shooter, because the longer you take the harder enemies the game spawns. Which forces you to run as directly to objectives as you can because of the second big problem, the bot companions. The AI companions leave the player to do 99% of the heavy lifting. They don't do enough damage or have enough skills to deal with anything bigger than trash enemies without direct player intervention. Doubling down on this is the enemy mechanics where you have to debuff harder enemies' insane healing or armor before you can kill them. The bot classes generally can't debuff at all, and mostly fail to do so correctly even if you bring a bot that can.

This would be mitigated in multiplayer where you can synergize classes but the bot classes literally do not have the same options available as the player. They get simple versions of some of the class skills, can't carry as big of weapons, have limited suit upgrades and can't use items at all. To top it off you only get 3 of them with you, restricting your choices further.

The biggest issue with the game is that nothing is explained, players are left to guess at huge portions of game mechanics. Infestation on the campaign map, what research does, what rewards you get from missions, damage types, debuffs. The game doesn't even tell you how to get ammo for your companions, because apparently they run out of ammo and that isn't mentioned anywhere. (They get magic ammo from opening lockers)

I don't want to count the number of times i had to search the dev's discord for information about things that absolutely should have been explained in game or been in the tutorial. I have hundreds of hours in similar games and this game had me blindly guessing at core gameplay features the entire time.

I really like the idea of this game and bought into it because of its Warcraft III / Starcraft 2 custom map heritage but it's just disappointing. There's no way i could recommend this to any of my friends in its current state.

Have got more than my money worth out of the game to date & am continuing to play.
If you are on the fence about the game, please take this as the 'push' to give it a go!

The controls aren't for everyone (This is not a twin stick shooter) but once you get used to them, work very well.

I hit the jackpot when I discover this game in the discovery queue during Steam Summer 2021 Sale.

  • I'm really into this type of Real-Time Strategy/RPG type games.
  • Played lots of similar type of games in StarCraft II, such as Undead Assault Chronicles (UAC), Night of the Dead (Notd) but no longer into StarCraft now and was afraid I am not going to find another decent game with similar gameplay.
  • When I found this, this easily becomes one of my favourite game, incredibly fun to play with friends or solo.
  • Thank you devs for all your hardwork and keep updating this awesome game. I have played 200+ hours but still no way near satisfied yet because there are just so much more stuffs to do, capturing zombies, grinding EXP to unlock more weapons, classes, gears.
  • The new Terminator class is so fun to play with, already cannot wait for Hellfire class and all your future DLCs.

GET IT... best game of it's type with tons more content coming.

Yes the interface is a little confusing, and there are a few controls i'd change... but you get used to it, and it is awesome.

I want to like this game. I really do. I loved Xcom and I loved Helldivers. But this game is neither of those two games.

It plays like a bad starcraft 2 custome map. I get that these guys started with that, but come on... This is a stand alone game... You can make all of your stuff outside the bounds of a custom map in Starcraft. Why you would have the same limited inventory system as Starcraft/Warcraft 3 is completely beyond me. There is soooooooo much room for improvement on this game its not even funny.

I think the worst part about this game is the extremely steep difficult jump that happens after the first few missions. The AI bot allies you get in single player can't keep up with the higher difficulty mobs. They just get overrun, so what's the point in even having them?

Also, there is literally NO explaination on how to get Black Ops, how to properly use the tactical overlay components of the game, how to build and upgrade outposts, how to reduce Strol infestation, how to use explosives, etc.

There is also literally no explanation to the different Strol units. They just kind of appear and you have to guess what they do. In Xcom, new alien variants were explained somewhat when you first come across them so that you have some idea of how to handle the situation. In this game you're expected to go read through the archives AFTER the mission to get an extremely bland idea of what the monster does.

Also the trickle of enemies is so boring and mediocre feeling. Jump Pack feels janky and dumb and it should feel fluid and fun.

There's a lot of potential here in this game, but I just honestly can't recommend this game to anyone in its current state. Its in such a bad place right now. Needs at least another year of work for them to build proper UI quality of life improvements and better weapon balancing. Currently most of the weapons are completely and utterly useless once you get bigger opponents. Meaning you can't even play your favourite class because most classes have no way of dealing with higher level threats.

Ever since I got this game I can't stop playing. I have enjoyed this games so much that its one of my highlights of this summer season. With 65 hours in, I can say that the Campaign is enjoyable. The story isn't the best story out there but it is enough for me to be interested in it. I have played the majority solo and have had a lot of fun with it. This game is definitely better with friends by your side but what game isn't? The Campaign is quite long to my surprise. Like I said above, I haven't stopped playing and am still not done with the story yet. So for those who are wanting a long experience this is the game for you.

I have played a few games of multiplayer and they can get pretty intense. They are definitely a blast to play. Every class has a role to play. There is some flexibility but I think if you are going to play a class then play into its strengths. Also don't be afraid to look up how to play a class. That's what I did and it helped a lot in refining my builds. Everyone that I have encountered has been friendly, haven't had one toxic teammate yet. Also stick together, especially in the higher levels of difficulty.

I see many people had confusion with the game at launch. I can't speak on this however because I just recently bought the game. What I can say is this has been fixed with the tutorial manual at the start screen for all to see. I didn't really look at the tutorials and got a good grasp of the game and its mechanics in the first few missions. One more thing to note, I haven't had many bugs with the game. They were mostly weird little things like enemies or friendly bots clipping through the ground and I have had only one crash.

In summary I think this is a great game and more people should give it a go. The campaign is long and does a good job at keeping you engaged. Multiplayer is a lot of fun especially when people are communicating in chat. I'm not sure if more content is coming out for the game but I sure do hope there is :).

Found this game on the Steam Store page and thought I would give it a try.

After messing around for a few hours, I've come to the realization that this game is not worth $30. I say this because it's actually disappointing for the price. When you first start a campaign and run through the tutorial, you get a sense of the basic controls and finally make your way into the campaign menu with the over-world view. It's here that you can go into the armory and customize your character. Seemingly, the only two classes that you start with are Assault and Medic. Which would be fine normally, but as I was playing multiplayer with someone; I began to see how unfair and unbalanced it is for campaign. The host has to research various things through the campaign to unlock the other classes and weapons, while the player who joined the campaign match can level his profile and have things unlocked from the start. There is a work around where you can just fast forward time by scanning and making the timer go down to have the unlocks before you start missions, but then the infestation level becomes too high. Making the missions more difficult for two players. Especially those new to the game.

So then I tried Skirmish mode. Much to contrary of the campaign issue, both players can fully customize their character from the start. Great. Now the only problem with that is it then became boring. Activate overwatch and right click your way through the map as you escort a convoy. Most of the weapons are not great and it sounds like having everything at your disposal had taken the fun away, right? Wrong. What was fun about the campaign was the objectives on the missions and the length.

If the multiplayer concept had been developed better, I might would recommend this game.

RS2 starts out great, and I had a blast for the couple of hours, but the difficulty ramped up ridiculously fast and got out of hand. I'm facing foes that either don't take damage, or regen up the damage I did while my guys reload. Maybe I messed up my tactical overlay gameplay because there's no tutorial for it and I had no clue what what I did for a few hours. Either way, I'm not having fun anymore. So this was a short-lived experience.

The action footage you see here on the store page, that's the first hours of the game. Later on it's bulletsponge gallore and everything is just tedious and annoying. I stopped playing RS1 because it was a bit to hard for my taste, so I should have known better. I just thought the devs balanced it out better since RS2 was so fun at first.

Follow my Curator Page if you're into Strategy Games!

This review is mostly for people wanting to play the game in single-player. The campaign as well as missions are playable in multiplayer. See more about this below.

Red Solstice 2: Survivors is a strategy game and twin-stick shooter but with RTS controls. The strategy part mostly takes place in the geoscape.

Campaign

Think about XCOMs geoscape without the base-building and swap turn-based battles with real-time battles and you'll have Red Solstice 2: Survivors.
I mention XCOM on purpose because in that regard (Geoscape) Red Solstice 2: Survivors is a straight copy. It exactly works like in XCOM just stripped down. Even the UI looks like it was copied straight out of XCOM.
It's still fun through just a bit awkward they copied it so shamelessly.

Combat

Like I said before, this is a twin-stick shooter with RTS controls. You move your soldier indirectly, have a few abilities on hotkeys, change between shooting automatically or manually, and command your squad of up to 3 AI-controlled soldiers. It's fun and a neat idea tbh. I don't usually like twin-stick shooters but have fun the way they do it here. The only thing missing to make it actually great is more strategy within battles. To that effect, it mostly resembles a twin-stick shooter (Don't get me wrong, not every TSS doesn't require any strategic thinking).

Strategy?

While I don't want to say that there is NO strategy involved in playing missions, it speaks volumes that their official dev diary on youtube about strategy only focuses on the world map (campaign) rather than missions.

Your Soldiers

You gain EXP during missions and your soldiers will level up based on that. Your main soldier has a skill tree where you can spend your skill points freely while AI-controlled soldiers are assigned to a class, rank up and you can choose one of up to four different (passive) abilities.

Difficulty

You can set the difficulty of the campaign too easy, normal, or hard which results in harder modifiers such as enemies have more health, do more damage, etc.
Within the campaign, missions also have different difficulties based on the infection rate displayed by skulls but you can change the difficulty on top of all that, too to get more EXP.
My campaign was set to normal but it wasn't a challenge at all. I was never in need of anything, just run from objective to objective, and that's it. Pretty boring if you ask me. I advise you to play on hard in your campaign. Although I read that end game missions tend to be too hard (I can't say for sure as I didn't reach that part yet and maybe never will).

Multiplayer

You can play the campaign or missions in multiplayer with up to 7 friends or strangers. Sadly, there is nothing about this mode explained within the game. You will have your soldier from the campaign and I don't even know why. It's not fun for me to play a random mission with strangers and getting nothing for it. Well, your soldier has two additional skill trees in multiplayer so you can level him up there, but for what exactly? What happens with the skills I choose when going back into the campaign (Especially the ones not available in single-player)?
As far as I can tell, my soldier had the same skills I leveled up in single-player in multiplayer, too. So does it only work one way? I can't tell.

If you're unlike me (and like to play these kinds of games in MP), you'll probably find out about it in the steam forums or by trying it out.

Bugs

Sadly, the game is plagued by bugs (nothing game-breaking in my experience though). Just a few examples:
It doesn't show you the right modifiers when selecting the campaigns difficulty, sound bugs when opening the menu while shooting, individual monsters get stuck and aren't able to move at all, hordes of monsters get stuck and run in one place, against a wall or aren't able to get into a building even though the door is open or your AI squad getting stuck, run around a whole building when you move to a wall nearby and more…
Most of it is just annoying or minor but the overall experience suffers a lot because of how often something like this happens.

The Good

  • Handling research, resources, and infection, while taking care of mutants is diversified and fun for every strategy fan.
  • RTS-controls in combat are very well implemented, giving you overall more control in combat compared to twin-stick shooters.
  • Different types of missions for example escort VIPs, rescue soldiers, destroy something, survive for X minutes, and a variety of sidequest within a mission.
  • Everything related to the campaign is voiced.
  • Being able to play your campaign with friends.

The Bad

  • The cover system is not good at all. [Sometimes] There are more enemies than you have firepower which means, if you're holding an objective, you need to constantly run around in circles to prevent them from doing damage to you.
  • Almost no strategy in combat.
  • Many bugs.
  • No explanation about the multiplayer mode.
  • Normal difficulty is so easy, it feels like an auto-battler.

Conclusion

Red Solstice 2: Survivors is a solid game. There are many bugs, it could use some more strategy within combat and an explanation for the multiplayer mode. Aside from that, the geoscape is very fun and evens the boring missions out a bit. It's fun but not enough to be addictive or keep me engaged long enough to play through the whole game. I expected more for a price this high to be honest.

If you're looking for a simple RTS game, this could be something for you. Still, I recommend waiting for a higher sale and more bug fixes till jumping into it.

I really want to like this game because the devs are really cool and down to earth but there's just too many frustrating problems and balance issues that impede your ability to enjoy the game particularly when solo.

For starters, hard difficulty and up (though normal could be similar) its borderline impossible to do solo unless you possess immense game knowledge and know cheesy tactics. This is for a couple of reasons.
The first thing is the AI isn't great and is prone to running into enemies, running off, bugging out and/or getting stuck, misusing secondaries; not using them properly or not at all, blowing themselves up, missing targets completely. It's also just generally clunky to order them to use secondaries, which is a big problem because they're incredibly important to be able to survive.

The other thing is you and your AI scale significantly slower into the endgame with your unlocks than the enemies do. You do unlock new weapons but the vast majority are side grades with significant downsides and upsides, it's not like XCOM where you unlock flat weapon upgrades. You do unlock better secondary weapons, which is the only thing that really scales, but for one the AI can't use them well (see above) and two, most have friendly fire which is hard to manage when not very good AI. In terms of staying alive, there's essentially no increase in survivability from beginning to end, I had the same amount of HP as when I started, same with armour. The AI have very little loadout slots, so many of their classes can't be equipped with heavier weapons, better secondaries or upgrades. When it comes to enemies though, they get completely insane, upgraded versions of normal enemies start appearing and in greater numbers. By the endgame you have enemies with so much health you have to kite them around the entire map because they take so long to kill, but they're spawning faster than you can kill them in bigger and bigger numbers (even with max artillery). The later waves get so insane that you really have to rush the objectives and just pray you get a spawn layout that includes as little walking as possible.

Speaking of objectives, they often spawn ridiculously far away and will frequently send you to one side of the map, then back to the opposite side for the second part. The amount of walking you have to do for some missions is so astronomic they're not even remotely worth it. And I'm talking early game, late game you literally can't even attempt *any* objectives because you can't focus on anything aside from the unending bullet sponges following you. Capturing enemies seems impossible and incredibly annoying also.

I'm sure it gets even worse than the stage I'm at now, but I don't particularly want to/can't play anymore because my highest damage secondary in the game is barely scratching the enemies now. The game scales to the amount of people/ai in your squad apparently, but the devs definitely have overestimated the effectiveness of having 3 AIs in your squad, they really shouldn't count as any players at all imo (1 player + 3 AIs = 1 player scaling).

TL:DR soloing the campaign isn't viable for the average player as the AI isn't very good and is hard to manage (maybe easy difficulty would be okay???), many objectives aren't worth the amount of walking and player scaling is minimal and generally convoluted. If you play multiplayer you'll probably have a great time.

Great game(potential to be great). I would avoid it like plague for at least a year cause it should have been in EA. I'm not speaking about bugs, i'm speaking about overall (un)balance, swarm meter, random objectives 100km away from you on the map spawning while final wave is on you, terrible lvl system, stupid companions, poor rewards, chaotic side quests. Gameplay is great, great isometric tense shooting, but it's plagued with unbalanced random pop-ups, there is no fun when that shit meter is on it's final wave in less then 2min and you recieve 3 side quests XD. I did god knows how many side quests with full victory and swarm % was just going up(never down), it's frustrating. I see they are patching the game, making improvements, but I'll wait for a year(or two). I had fun and frustration at the same time, it's enough for 20h.
