The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Testament of Sherlock versetzt die Spieler in das 1898er London, wo eine unglaubliche Ermittlung auf sie wartet.

If you like the other games in the series, then this one will be a treat as well. Not the biggest fan of the first person part of the control scheme and making the game show you what can be looked at is a must. The characters seem more lively in this one than the previous games as well

I tried every Sherlock game in the series, and Jack the Ripper was the first one I finished and enjoyed.

Testament is the second.

I'd read Steam reviews and was almost put off trying it, but gave it a go and didn't have any bad moments.

I'll just go through my fears and what it did to allay them:

==============================

"It's now just a puzzle game, and the puzzles are ridiculous and hard"

This one's more 'adventure gamey' than Ripper, as you pick up things then use them on other things, doing puzzles etc. and less focus on figuring out crimes. Like a point-and-click (it even lets you change it to a point-and-click game rather than 1st/3rd person WASD).

All the puzzles were fine for me. While I used a guide a few times, if I was locked in a room and could only get out by completing the game unaided, I'd be a free man before I starved.

The first puzzles are ridiculous - one involves moving a knight on a chess board and having to touch every square once - but after that they're better, and logical.

You also won't end up with an inventory filled with 100 items that have one use, like some games, trying to combine them all and click them on a spot to get the solution.

==============================

"The menus are confusing"

I mean, you just right click to bring up your inventory, which you don't even need to do as your scroll wheel goes through it quicker, then you click on the thing with your item. You'll only carry a few items, so if you need to combine them, that'll take 1 second.

There are a couple of moments where it's vague, but it generally has a formula - magnifying glass = looky here, finger icon = more to see or use item here.

==============================

"The controls are bad"

That depends on which controls you use - the game lets you revamp it to a point-and-click anyway.

But if you want WASD, you've got those good old retro tank controls. It as slightly unwieldy as other 90s/00s tank control games, but nothing frustrating. Nostalgic if anything.

==============================

"The plot's bad"

It sure can be dumb, but once they establish at the start that there's a criminal monkey, you know it's gonna be so bad that it's good. It does still have good twists, just let down every once in a while by a "er, wut" moment.

It was never going to be Jack The Ripper, which is a documentary itself.

==============================

"The production's bad"

Just look at the game and you know you're going to get some questionable voice acting to go with it, and that it probably came from deep in Europe somewhere, but it's actually pretty ok.

Watson may sound like a nature narrator, but he does have a lot of sass, while Sherlock carries the thing with his accent and utter contempt for everyone.

Music-wise is decent, if lacking in context. It's not AAA music direction, but it's got what you'd expect from a Sherlock adventure game, a bit Broken Sword-y with more strings.

==============================

"DOG"

At one point you control a genius, aging, chubby basset hound and his butt wiggles as he walks. And you can run around with a stick. While dramatic investigative music plays.

How this didn't win a gaming award for something, I don't know.

==============================

"Bugs / It doesn't work / Can't save"

I encountered no issues whatsoever on my self-built 4K-level Windows 10 PC and zillion manual saves.

Now I'm not saying this is an amazing game or will astound you, it's a solid 7 or 6/10.

It's an obscure Ukrainian adventure game by a developer you've never heard of about a character whose only stayed relevant today by an 'updated' TV show with Benedict Cumberbatch.

If you haven't played a Sherlock game, play Jack The Ripper first. It's less interactive, but really was good.

This is fine, with some funny moments and good puzzles.

If you've played Jack The Ripper, this definitely deserves trying past the first few chapters.

Quite enjoyable, although working out how to get Sherlock to do what you want him to do can be a problem in itself. In the end, I was defeated by a bug about half-way through - could NOT retrieve a card (needed to proceed) from a filing cabinet.

No helpful suggestions available anywhere, so it has to be "not recommended."

A game where Sherlock Holmes decides that ethics and morals are for chumps before being mercilessly walloped by small, very obnoxious children.

The graphics are a huge step up from previous entries, and the puzzles range from mundane to brutal. There's also an option to skip puzzles, but what fun is that?

Creepy Watson(TM) has been replaced with verbally abused Watson as Holmes finally got fed up with being constantly startled during his investigations. That doesn't stop Watson from being a human obstacle on occasion though, even if it is well warranted.

Pretty good fun overall, controlling characters can be a bit frustrating at times and some of the puzzles are tough to work out (for me at least) and a either missed the clue to them or they are just a bit random. Be careful of checkpoint system as you often need to complete longish sections before next autosave so I got caught out a few times and needed to repeat some stuff when I came back to game as I didn't proceed far enough on the puzzle before switching off. Probably look to grab some more SH games from frogware is I see a sale on.

I bought this game when it was on an 80% discount and I'm sure glad that I did. I simply don't understand all the positive reviews for this game. I've only played for 2.5 hours and it's been nothing but frustration and boredom. I'd wager that even Sherlock Holmes himself couldn't deduce what these developers were thinking.

I knew this game was going to be a disaster from the minute I started. Moving Holmes is like trying to back up a trash truck. The cameras and controls are some of the wonkiest I've ever seen and attempting to make adjustments using the in-game control settings was painful to say the least. The mouse sensitivity adjuster is very badly calibrated. I can't recall ever having struggled with such a thing before but I had to make numerous attempts to straighten the sensitivity out only to finally get it to something only barely tolerable in the end. It doesn't help that the game requires a good deal of maneuvering in tight conditions and navigating to small clue marker elements, making the clunky controls nothing but an elaborate test of pain tolerance. Imagine trying to get around in your apartment after having back surgery the day prior and being forced to wear roller skates. That is what it is like to move Holmes and Watson in this game.

To make matters worse the puzzles are insane. One of the first puzzles you encounter is a classic chess puzzle called "The Knight's Tour" in which you are expected to move a knight onto every square of a chess board only hitting each square once. I'm sorry, but I don't have time for that sort of nonsense. I went to YouTube for the solution because there was no way in Hell that I was going to sit down and spend hours guessing how to do something like that. The very next puzzle is yet another classic chess puzzle called "The Eight Queens Puzzle" in which one is expected to place several Queens on a chess board in such a way that they do not endanger one another. Why create a puzzle game when you're simple going to rip off other peoples' puzzles? And why on Earth do the weirdos in Holmes' world use chess puzzles to lock their safes anyway? How ridiculous. I suppose using locks and keys or number combinations like normal people is considered too "low class" for the Victorian regency. Your guess is as good as mine.

The icing on this shite cake is the god-awful UI. I couldn't figure out how to do simple things in the game like use basic items. The occasional tutorial tips that pop up from time to time are of little help and there are no on-screen indications that items can be used anywhere. At one point you're expected to use Holmes' custom lab equipment on various pieces of evidence that you've gathered in order to perform analyses on them. The game signals you to "use the equipment" but gives no indication on HOW to use it. I just had to click on random elements on the screen and hope for the best. I didn't even know what I was attempting to accomplish. How fun.

The plot is also painfully absurd. The first case involves a monkey trained to steal from someone's home. How do you train a monkey to use a diamond cutter to gain access to a jewelry case? Beats me, but I'm sure glad Holmes thought of that possibility. That criminal sure put in a lot of effort to steal a necklace. Ya think he would have just broken into the house and stole the damn thing himself if he wanted it that bad -- ya know, like a normal criminal? But I guess it wouldn't be a *super cool* Sherlock Holmes case if it didn't contain convoluted crime stories, right? Those conventional theft and murder cases are just not exciting enough for the kids these days...

And don't get me started on the amateurish voice acting. The dialog lines are delivered so badly you'd think they were prototypes of an AI. Holmes' voice was putting me to sleep and Watson sounds like a vapid twit. You really want me to believe this guy is a doctor? And I sure hope the guy who wrote the lines for the children in this game doesn't have any kids himself. He or she clearly doesn't have any understanding of how children naturally speak or behave. It's kind of disturbing to see children portrayed in such a thoughtless way. But, boy, do these devs know how to design creepy-looking children. Those faces...yikes. The stuff of nightmares. And did anyone else realize that the children reading the Sherlock Holmes story to each other are casually exploring the case in which a clergyman is tied to a chair and tortured to death, eventually biting off one of the fingers of his tormentors? What a wholesome thought!

I can't think of anything redeeming about this game except its graphics, which are only tolerable. Like many producers of Holmes-related content the developers focused far too much on making a quirky Holmes piece full of "smart stuff" and not enough on making a compelling and competent work. I signed up to play as a legendary detective solving England's most pressing crimes, not to struggle to trod around a poorly-designed apartment or to solve classic chess puzzles I could find easily find elsewhere.

This game stands out to me as a true example of developers putting the cart before the horse: all good intention and high hopes but no planning and execution. The game was dead before it even hit the store. Case solved.

In The Testament of Sherlock Holmes we will take a peek under the coat of distinguished Sherlock Holmes only to find that hideous criminal hide beneath it? Even his close, long-time friend Doctor Watson begins to question Sherlock's motives as a strange series of events portray the great consulting detective in a bad light. The truth is hidden out there in the dark, dirty alleys of London so let's find it!

First thing that you can notice about this game (when comparing it to the older titles) is that the graphics went through some serious upgrades and it's a rather pleasant change. The overall tone stays dark and grim, which suits the detective theme. All the characters and environment look good, although some problems are still present - like truly dark areas where you don't see a thing or not so good lip sync during conversations. Music is all right. There is a new voice actor for Sherlock Holmes, Kerry Shale, who does a nice job in his shoes (little side note: he is also voicing main protagonist in Someday you'll return). He sounds very close to the previous actor, so the change isn't that apparent and it doesn't disturb the immersion built throughout the whole series. Watson is voiced by the same actor as in previous games. Voices of other characters were improved, except for those of children (they still sounded pretty silly).

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2945267899

Gameplay wise it's a standard adventure game where you have to search different kinds of rooms, alleys or even dead bodies for clues and then further analyze them to uncover the truth. Also let's not forget about the puzzles - there are quite a lot of them, they are nicely varied, logical and rather pretty good! Most of them offer a challenge, but shouldn't prove too hard to solve.
You are still free to pick your desired point of look (first-person, thirds-person or standard point-and-click). Besides Sherlock you are gonna spent a lot of time as Watson and even as a most helpful companion Toby!

My biggest complaint goes to the story. It's… it's just strange and somewhat wrong. Dark portrayal doesn't suit Sherlock at all and what's worse it isn't even believable. I was quite at loss for most of the time as the plot holes are sadly rather big. In the end, I didn't pay much attention to the story. Watson is much bigger help this time and also not such a good for nothing sidekick, but him doubting Holmes is ridiculous. On the other hand Sherlock turns into a complete idiot.
There is still some kind of stability problem and the game may crash from time to time. For me it happened only twice, I believe, so it wasn't such a frustrating problem as with the Jack the Ripper, but it may prove annoying if it would be more often.

Even though the story wasn't up to my taste I have liked the visuals, puzzles and overall atmosphere of the game, so I can safely recommend it to fans of adventure games. Oh and the credits are perfect!

Edit:
My reviews for other games in the series:
Sherlock Holmes: The Secret of the Silver Earring
Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened (2008)
Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis
Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of The Persian Carpet
Sherlock Holmes and The Hound of The Baskervilles
Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper

If you've played any other Sherlock Holmes games prior to this, then imagine something similar but also better... but also worse. The gameplay mechanics are the same. Walk around, talk to people, solve puzzles and come to conclusions (if it ain't broke, don't fix it right?). The story is also quite good and engaging, graphics hold up well considering this is almost a decade old game.
But still I can't recommend this to anyone.
The game opens with a cutscene and without spoiling anything let me just say that it's the most horrendous opening cutscene I've ever seen in a video game.
and there's a bug that makes the game crash every single time the game try to autosave (and sometimes manual save). I've looked through some forums and it seems like this was an issue ever since 2017. Had to replay the same missions over and over again until I found a fix on the community hub.
HOWEVER, if you can sit through that opening scene and also apply that fix before playing then you'll enjoy this game the way it was meant to be enjoyed.
But knowing that the developer hasn't done anything to fix this simple bug since 2017, I can't recommend this game. Sorry, Frogwares.

A Londoner in the late 1800's, a man with a passion for detective work and a friend who supports him at all costs. Cases that are open-ended and hard to prove. Your job will be very difficult, but you should never lose hope.

Pros
+ Holy hat of Holmes! Without spoiling anything, that was the Holmesian of plots! Also a nice reference to the previous games.
+ You will need to act like a serious OP detective
+ If you like puzzles, Holmes you got you covered!
+ You get to control a good boi!
+ Interesting mechanic of switching between Holmes and Watson
+ The analysis table mechanic has been refined... Shame we don't get to use it as often...
+ Take care of how you want to deal with... stubborn characters...
+ Although I believe Holmes have a voice change, I've now gotten used to Kerry Shale's voice. It stayed as close to the old games. (If he didn't, please correct me!)
+ It's Sherlock Holmes!!

Cons
- Save often!! The game has closed on me a few times, even with the auto-save feature
- If you don't like puzzles, too bad
- Remember to turn up the gamma if it's too dark
- Game will lag when your camera faces large bodies of water (2 sections). My guess is because of rendering with memory or stuff... Luckily it doesn't make the game unplayable

This game is completely unplayable in that it will crash every time you try to save, or whenever it auto-saves. I have tried running the game on it's lowest settings, playing in windowed mode, only saving in empty save slots (as opposed to overwriting previous saves), and even playing both with keyboard and with controller.

It's a real shame, too, because this game made some SIGNIFICANT improvements in terms of graphics and game play. After 4 hours of play (at least an hour and a half of which was replaying progress lost to crashes) I refuse to waste anymore time on this game.

Obviously I had a lot of fun playing this game but bugs .. It's really annoying that when the game saves data it can crush out of nowhere and you have to play from the beginning of the mission: c
At least I had fun playing as Sherlock and got some interesting puzzles.

the game is apparently alright it just doesn't run.
you can't get the damn thing to start, and no amount of reinstalling drivers, adding legacy drivers, rolling back, reinstalling the game, moving files around, verifying, reinstalling the game -- nothing works.

this is a do not buy for me

Do Not Recommend – 4.5/10

The Good: This game is showing its age, but the graphics are not that bad. Story and gameplay are average.

The Bad: Sigh…I was liking this game. I made it about 1/3 of the way through where I had my first autosave crash. As I continued to progress through the game, these save crashes increased in frequency. Once I reached the 95% point in the game, I could not progress. The game would crash repeatedly. I finally worked my way through the issue by deleting some early save files. I was glad I was done with the game and at this point, hardly cared what the ending was. The fact that there were so many times where the game would crash and I would have to repeat puzzles and make up progress just ruined the game for me. Other than the crashes, there were several times where the deductions just didn’t come together naturally. On top of all of this, when I first started playing, my character would get stuck walking forward until I…turned on V’SYNC. Ya…This should have been a red flag for me, but I continued to my regret. (6700K, 64GB, 1080Ti, nvme970Pro)

Overall: I would skip this iteration of Sherlock Holmes. The story is just average. There was a compatibility update that did not fix the issues I faced, which just ruined the experience. And there are other SH games, like Crime and Punishment, which are much better and bug free.

Testament is an interesting game;

Gameplay wise, its pretty good! The controls were fine, investigative sections decent, and the puzzles puzzling. It is a truly good detective game.
Visually, this game is VERY nice to look at, at least most of the time. The environments show their age, but they aged very very well. The character models didnt age nearly as gracefully, and the facial animations are... bad... but! theyre not intolerable, and if anything make the game more charming in its own ways.
The story/plot of the game is the weakest part of its composition by FAR. Its not unbearable, but its not at all good; it clearly wants to be deeper, more dramatic, and full of actual intrigue, yet it fails to pull off any of these attempts. The story is shallowly edgy, and lacks any real substance or hold on the player- and the ending is just terrible in a very boring way. Not to mention the strange, story-book framing of the whole things. Like i said, tolerable, but the weakest link.

the game, while more functional than other older Frogwares titles, is sadly not glitch-free. It crashed often for me when saving, both player and auto saves. luckly, because you can save any time + the autosaves, and it does not crash every time, its more annoying than game-ruining.

i recommend it, but be wary, i guess

I'm not gonna complain about graphics or janky animation, because it's an old game, but the voice acting and dialoge is really painful.

Also it crashes everytime, when I try to enter Whitechapel Street, so I can't even finish it.

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes is a 3D adventure/detective game (which can also be played like a point-and-click game) with a captivating, well written story. It definitely kept me invested till the end. There were no passages that felt tedious or arduous.

I would have enjoyed a few more challenging puzzles, the majority were too easy. Only a handful puzzles where you had to think more than a few minutes.

The graphics aged well (game was released in 2012) and the music and voice acting are excellent.

I finished the game in a little bit over 10 hours. “It is simplicity itself!”

BUT: Apparently this game has some issues with the autosave feature; it crashes and corrupts the savegame in the process. The problem seems to be related to PhysX. The discussions are full of threads with this problem.... so be warned.

I really liked this game. I got into it. The story was great. However, it looks like most people run into a problem about a third of the way into the game. There is an auto-save feature, which I love, but it kinda of bugs out the game. So when you get to a certain point, the game goes to save and than just crashes. I have googled and looked up forums on how do deal with this, and its really something that can't be fixed. It doesn't happen to everybody, and I did get the game for free. So I will not say its a horrible game. But I will not get the chance to enjoy the full story and I am pretty bummed about it.

10/10. This is the best Sherlock game out there, better than Crimes and Punishments. A great epilogue to the series
Can't wait for Chapter 1!!

Pros: The story is brilliant, the small cases are so well-connected and bring cohesion to the overarching story. Graphs and control have aged so well. The twists, the ending... Amazing game!

Cons: Hard to find any, but perhaps that some puzzles are quite hard without guides ;) Also this game would benefit enormously from a remaster with Ray Tracing and updated graphs

Tips. Play it after C&P as a finale to the series after Awakened & C&P (but you can play Devil's Daughter as an extra)

I rummage through the dregs of rubble, intent on discovering a clue as to the motive of the killer, who has now brutally clubbed a woman that now lies crumpled and discarded in a watery ditch. After, searching for hours without any form of evidence coming into fruition, frustration has begun to envelope my person, threatening to utterly impede the investigation. My companion Horachio, being a sentient skull of the individual who I brutally battered with a frying pan, watches nonchalantly, subtly reminding me on the repercussions of failing to accurately deduce the criminal in a murder investigation. This seeks only to infuriate my mood and results in Horachio being drenched in urine, with his memorial plaque now being vandalised to insinuate that he had a tendency to seduce criminals, while adoring a gimp suit. Asides from Horachio, my grips upon the investigation were shattering. The women lay half submerged in the water deceased, with a slight smile forming upon her lips, why she appeared utterly ravishing, desirable. My innate primal desires fought with every fibre of my prudence to ravage her corpse, until it became re animated and wholly subservient. Alas, I repelled the temptation, continuing my investigation and by the nine, my persistence's efforts had come into fruition. I had spot a tampom, residing within an obscure location, adjacent to a gutter, that was connected to the stream where the body lay. Heaven's bless me, for it also appeared that nearby this tampon lay a deceased Kurdish fetus. These two pieces of evidence were crucial to the investigation, as they represent his personality, qualifications, interests and motives. For example, while the case lays in ambiguity, it raises various inquiries, such as if the killer possesses any racial hatred, is a proponent of abortion or possibly a female. Furthermore, it should be noted that the women appears to have undergone an abortion, immediately prior to death, indicating that a self conducted abortion may have occurred. This depicts that the killer has a distinct interest regarding medicine, with the deceased corpse indicating that they do not have any genuine, professional experience in the medical industry. While imperative Intel has been acquired, it must be uttered that this case is utterly peculiar.

Here belies the second week of investigation. It appears that the killer, wary of leaving a revealed pattern has engaged in another matter of illicit activity. It appears that this insidious fiend now spreads distress throughout Sherfield, by infiltrating homes and molesting the domestic pets within. Witnesses have stated that he adorns a coat of furs from a unique assortment of animals, equip with aesthetically sinister appearing eyes, that act in a similar matter to cross eyed entities. Fortunately, it appears that despite the killers grievous crimes, he has left a trail of furs to his location. After numerous days of tracking remnants of evidence left behind, I stumble upon an ominous cave, bearing a sigil with the image of a girl who appears to have feline like DNA.

Tentatively entering the cave, Horachio and I prepare to apprehend the criminal and there we see it. A horde of humanoid figures, dressed in bestial apparel, surrounding a shivering, baffled child. They appear to be attempting to induct this child into their order, pushing a suit, comprised of fur into his arms, nuzzling into him and urging him to molest a Dalmatian, that resides in a nearby cage. The child, likely bearing a remnant of sentience declines profusely, sitting despondently in the circle, while the apparitions persistently urge him on. Out of repulsion at this scene, I immediately open fire, mercilessly executing the fiends that grace my presence. Within a short duration of time all that remains are corpses, the bewildered child and the smoke arising from my pistol. My work here is done, acting in a heroic manner, I free the Dalmatian, who subsequently becomes my lifelong companion and the child, returning back to the realm of Sherfield.

Although, my case was a success, I was not compensated for the hardship I endured, while additionally not receiving my due recognition in the local mail. For this reason, alongside the severely potent component of engaging within the occupation of a detective I have formally decided to resign and urge all to avoid enlisting as a detective, dedicated to upholding Britain's values.

Wow, I just finished this game and I really enjoyed it. I have already played another Sherlock-game by Frogwares in November (Crimes and Punishments).
When Sherlock became more and more strange and suspicious I felt sooo sorry for Watson :,(
I think that the gameplay is good, since this game is older then 'Crimes and Punishments' it has less extensive interaction than the newer game of course. In the end, it was sometimes difficult to save the game because it would then crash. This was a little a bit annoying.
The story is great and stunning.
On the whole, I enjoyed this game and I am already looking forward to play their next Sherlock-game.

While this game is not as good as some other games in the series (some puzzles are pretty counter-intuitive while others are too easy, some dialogues are lacking in quality), I think that the fans of Sherlock Holmes will nevertheless enjoy playing it.
The story is pretty interesting and has some unexpected twists, the deduction boards are fun to solve and the voice acting is commendable when it comes to the two protagonists.

Bought this game during Autum Sale 2020.

Fifth Sherlock Holmes game from Frogwares that i'v played.

Took me 19 hours to finish the game and all achievements.

Has it cons/pros game mechanic/graphics wise.

Only problem, game breaking one was related to saving.

Luckily the fix was easy to find.

Spent quite sometime ingame struggling before looking for and finding it.

Even with saving issue the game was GOOD and story superb.

Like the books or tv-adaptations?

Try it!

Like stated in last reviews,

pros

+ gorgeous looking and polished graphics
+ well drawn, detailed and realistic characters
+ well made character animations
+ very good quality long cinematics
+ good voice acting
+ puzzles and mini games are varied, balanced and mostly enjoyable. they are not so easy or difficult
+ smooth engine and user friendly controls
+ three playable characters (sherlock, watson and a dog)
+ Intriguing story with plenty of twists and turns
+ some atmospheric environments to explore
+ an ability called 'sixth sense' is available, which will briefly highlight all the objects
+ there are steam achievements and cards
+ game is long

cons

- there is a crashing problem but it can be easily solved with an small patch. for more info https://steamcommunity.com/app/205650/discussions/0/1290690669217560169/?ctp=5
- a few trial and error puzzles but fortunately you can skipped them

Overall, this is an pretty good adventure game. i think game is verging more towards interactive movie than a old school p'n'c adventure game so i really enjoyed and recommended! considering high production values, game is quite polished and looked great.

I had to repeat the graveyard/autopsy over 5 times losing progress every time, totally ruining my pace and mood, I dont even know how this is possible, I bet these problems are easy to fix but devs dont care. 'The Testament of Sherlock Holmes' is based on an entirely fictional plot not borrowed from any of Arthur Conan Doyle's works. The length of the game is a good 25 hours, and one gets to solve lots of puzzles and search every nook and corner for clues. Dr. Watson acts as a valuable accomplice for Holmes and often one will control Watson rather than Holmes.

One feature that I really liked about the game is the graphics. They are very good, although not as good as some of the Tomb Raider games. The game takes place in some very odd yet beautiful settings. Another feature that is praiseworthy is the variety and ingenuity of the puzzles that the developers have created. The 'Deduction Menu' can be extremely challenging because one must reach the correct conclusion for each of the clues to reach the correct final conclusion. The music is for the most part dark and spooky, but fits well into the game.

Now for the cons, and there are plenty. The most problematic feature of this game is the bugs that the developers have not fixed. If you don't have an extremely powerful graphics card, chances are that the game will crash if you run it on the highest graphics settings. This happened to me twice. An even more problematic feature is that the game will crash if you try to save it. This happened to me numerous times, and I had to replay some puzzles six or seven times before I found a way to fix the problem. An equally annoying problem is that one will not be able to hear the characters' dialogues on a 5.1 surround sound system. One will have to change the sound settings to stereo for this problem to go away.

Another ghastly feature of the game is the extreme level of gore and violence. One will have to closely examine people whose skin has been ripped off, or whose fingers have been hacked off, or people with terrible burns and gaping wounds. One will even have to examine a hacked off finger or body organs for hidden clues. This kind of gore does not really add any entertainment value to the game but instead just arouses a feeling of shock and disgust.

Another major drawback is the difficulty of finding some of the clues and puzzles. At least three of the puzzles are flawed in their design. Thankfully, the game will let you skip puzzles that are too difficult. Nonetheless, at least one of the clues was so difficult to find that I thought something must have gone wrong in the game. I had to look up an online walkthrough to find that clue. If you play on the 'Easy' or 'Normal' settings then you probably won't go insane searching for these clues.

Despite the flaws, it is still worth playing this game for the variety and challenge of the puzzles, and the very interesting plot. But then you have to be prepared for the abject gore and violence. I would rate this game 7/10 despite all its flaws.

If you have played Crime and Punishment first, this installment will be a major let down. Many of the puzzles are nonsensical, the controls are inexplicable, and the character switching is unnecessary. They made me switch to Watson to grab a book off a shelf to bring it to Holmes not three feet away. Ridiculous.

Soo Crime and Punishment is amazing. I picked that up along with this during a sale, and I actually bought this because the other is so good. I did not care for the puzzles or functionality of this game much at all in comparison to Crime and Punishment. (Yes, I know this one is just slightly older, so I excused it for that. The story was actually very good, which is the only reason I finished playing it through.

I would NORMALLY recommend this. However, I have never tolerated so much glitchy bull crap in my life to finish a game I wasn't thoroughly enjoying. There is an issue with saving, and it's hard to explain exactly what because the circumstances changed as I progressed through the game. At first there was no issues. Then as soon as it had auto-saved enough to fill all the pages it started crashing. Okay, delete the extra saves. Seemed to work for a bit. Towards the end of the game it was unbearable. I could not manually save at all without crashing, I played through multiple parts multiple times. At the end of the game I noted that it would always crash the second time it auto-saved. I literally would exit the game every time it auto-saved, and reload it and that's the only way I could avoid re-doing areas. For this reason alone, I cannot recommend it. And if you look at the other negative reviews, it's a common error that has been going on for quite some time that I'm SURE Frogwares can fix if they put the effort into it. Until then.. maybe just avoid this game unless you're really excited for sherlock holmes and are fine with re-doing content.

Does not work until you go to forum discussion, look for a fix, read, download a patch to fix your video driver that's too modern the game from crashing and even after that you'll have major saving issues losing all your efforts. The company has released tons of new games for years since, and never fixed it although they are well aware of the situation, this is not their only games affected with this video driver thing btw.

Good fun for a few hours and really captures the feel of the books for me. The puzzles were a mix from easy to difficult and I spent some time figuring them out, but thankfully nothing was impossible.

I rather enjoyed my time, even though sometimes the graphics were a bit weird, but considering it's a small studio and from 2012 I wouldn't hold it against them. The controls where really intuitive for me, easy to learn and not complicated at all and I enjoyed being able to switch the perspective if needed. And, I loved Toby the dog! :D

note: The game also has some mild performance issues (don't even try playing this game in fullscreen mode) but I didn't have any major issues except having to play in windowed mode unless I wanted it to crash when trying to save. Other than that, pick it up in a sale and you won't regret it!

One of the best detective games about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.
Storytelling, interesting cases, hard puzzles, and beautiful (for 2012) graphics with a little spoon of bugs, but its nor the problem.
Great game.

It's simple fun, the story is interesting but has slightly awkward pacing and would have defo liked the puzzles to be more challenging.

Game crashes quite a bit as well, but it can be fixed using a 4GB patcher. I've found that playing the game on a 2x speedhack made the slow animations a lot more tolerable as well.

7/10, pick it up on a 50% sale or higher.

This game is full-length novel as if Crimes & Punishments is collected short stories

Pros
- Mood like original novel(especially Whitechapel)
- Korean Translation

Cons
- Crash happened at auto/manual saves

Hello all, so the 'Testament of Sherlock Holmes'. While I am a fan of the murder mystery genre, and am not adverse to a point a click mechanic, this game I am afraid to say has been left a little wanting.
The graphics are a little below par for 2012, however, as a small studio I won't hold that against them. What I struggled with is that there was no gradual build in difficulty. The puzzles are certainly challenging, but they start that way and continue on wards. The controls are also not intuitive which provides it's own frustrations. You can point and click, but then need to scroll through the possible items with arrows, rather than just click on what you want.
All in all, it's not a bad game, but it just feels unpolished. Like the game was made, but not played by the creators.
If you want a point a click mystery game, check out the more recent additions (which I have on xbox)... these proved a much more enjoyable experience.

Game keeps crashing when auto or manual saving. It ruins hours of work and progress everytime it does that. Fix your game. I really enjoy this series and this title is the one with the most crashes.

Really fun game, puzzles are good and most of them require decent logic. If you are looking for a fun casual puzzle solving game with a good story this is the game for you. However, there is a bug in it whenever it saves so you need to look online for a 4GB tool (u'll know once you search for it)

Like a lot of other reviews here: It crashes almost everytime while saving the game. After restart you can do everything again...what a shame to sell such a non-playable game!

There is a movement bug as well causing the character to walk constantly (in the 3rd person perspective). This bug is known since 2013 and hasn't been fixed. I call it a scam...

I remember this game being quite good when I first played it. But I can't for the life of me figure out why it keeps crashing every time I try to save. Don't buy this game unless you feel like disassembling it as a puzzle to figure out why it keeps crashing.

Sherlock is evil and Watson is a total idiot.
Story starts great then it approaches the end with a lame sequence of events as if they were lazy to conclude the case and chose this instead. And the ending... It was a bit fanfictiony.
Puzzles were fun and there were variety of them. It is possible to accidentally skip a puzzle, like I did, since game doesn't ask for confirmation which costs an achievement.
It was a nice experience and I would recommend the game to people who love Sherlock Holmes or puzzles. However, I strongly suggest to wait for a discount.

The series is fun as always, the story and the puzzles never really wear out their welcome. The game play is a little clunky and dated (even for 2012), but the intrigue and the sheer fun of the unraveling mystery more than make up for it.

Perhaps one of the best PC games I have ever played! The story was amazing and the atmosphere of the locations, characters and puzzles really brought this game to life! The graphics are excellent (well above my expectations) and the mystery was neither easy or too difficult to solve.
Pros: Story, replay value, longtevity (not too short), puzzles, dialogue, character profiles, map and freedom to solve the crime in any order you wish.
Cons: none

I'm only 3 hours into the game, but I'm not enjoying it at all. If with Crime and Punishment was love at first sight, this is the exact opposite.
I find odd that this is only 2 years older than C. P., but it actually looks way older, than just 2 years, under every aspect. Interface, graphic, puzzles. Everything is so clumsy, unpolished, not intuitive.
Even in the earliest moments of the game, it throws at you some puzzles, with no explanation at all, like the 2 similar puzzles about chess, in the chamber of the bishop. And it continues on that path.
The sections with Toby the dog, are really boring and unrealistic. The good boy can do some actions you'll never expect by a dog.
There is a constant sensation of unneded large locations, pixel hunting, and very slow, clumsy, unintuitive puzzles.
The story seems to be quite interesting, but maybe not enough to make me resist until the end.
I loved Crime and Punishment, but this is inferior under every aspect.
If you want a great Sherlock Holmes game, buy that.

The game looks nice, the controls are finicky but work well enough, the story was looking interesting ( up to the point I managed to get), the puzzles were decent ( I assume they would get harder/ more challenging as the game continued) and the deductions were engaging. Unfortunately, the game crashed 2-3 times during my less than 100 minutes of playtime and I gave up on the game after the last crash, which happened during an autosave and resulted in me losing about 30-45 minutes of playtime. I don't mind dealing with finicky controls or waiting for the puzzles to pick up in complexity, but re-doing gameplay segments because of crashes is not something I consider worth anyone's time and effort. Thanks for reading.

This game is riddled with technical issues that make it extremely difficult to play on modern computers. This includes having to install legacy device drivers just to get the game to launch, frequent crashes, and the inevitable crash-on-save bug.

The last of these issues is the biggest nuisance and will definitely test your patience. You'll find yourself forced to replay portions over and over, HOPING that the game won't crash when you reach the next auto-save location. This can be somewhat mitigated by limiting yourself to no more than two save files, running in windowed mode, and restarting your computer between saves (according to various tips in the forum). After the crash-on-save bug started affecting my game about 80% of the way through, I started using these techniques and they help somewhat - I went from a 100% crash-on-save rate to about 50%.

The plot itself has several holes big enough to drive a truck through, but if you can overlook those the game itself is enjoyable and a good exercise in observation and deduction with some challenging puzzles. If you're truly interested in playing it, find yourself a Windows 7 machine with older hardware and hopefully you can avoid a lot of the technical bugs.

A fun little Sherlock Holmes game. If you enjoyed Devil’s Daughter and Crimes & Punishments, you’ll probably enjoy this one too, as long as you don’t tend to get hung up on puzzles (more on this later). Unlike the later games, this one has one linear narrative joining the game together, though each “case” still feels distinctive and it doesn’t get too repetitive. The atmosphere is really great, relaxed sometimes-spooky mystery vibes. The story is fine, though it’s less action-packed and dramatic than later games, it feels just a bit more stupid. The characters are just as insufferable as ever – Sherlock is still a self-aggrandizing prat and Watson a moralizing knob. I did enjoy watching their eyes constantly bug out of their heads, particularly when Watson is having a burst of moral indignation. It just feels right, you know? Also you get to play as Toby and watch his little butt (and other parts, why Frogwares?) waddle around on your screen, which is always delightful.

TECHNICAL

I experienced one crash in the game that set me back about 15 minutes. No biggie. As other reviews were mentioning crashing when saving, I got into the habit of manually saving after autosaves just in case, but never had any actual issues with this.

GRAPHICS/VOICE-ACTING

For a game from 2012, honestly it’s okay. The spaces feel very small and claustrophobic, but this is a boon for the puzzle solving, and to me the environments still look pretty good and you can get immersed – there’s lots of detail and each space feels distinctive. It’s really just the character models and animations that are janky. Looking at anyone’s face really takes you out of it, but if you go into this willing to be amused, you might get some chuckles out of their dead eyes, ridiculous facial expressions, and fish guppy lip flapping. Given that I genuinely hate both Sherlock and Watson as human beings, this personally brings me a lot of joy.

There are also some voice-acting and dialogue errors which are incredible, including Sherlock whispering (loudly) to be quiet, and Watson bursting out in response “SHERLOCK, DON’T FORGET WE NEED TO FIND OUT WHERE THE BOMBS ARE.” At one point when Sherlock is missing, Watson is talking to Toby and says, inexplicably, “Ah, Toby, who knows where Holmes is!”, a bizarrely confident declaration that Toby knows where Holmes is, instead of (I assume) what’s in fact supposed to be a wistful question (“who knows where Holmes is?”). This is all extremely jarring and unintentionally hilarious, but similarly it brings me a lot of joy.

GAMEPLAY

Overall, I did enjoy the gameplay system. I like the deductions board a lot, it feels very rewarding – you need to use genuine logic to figure the answers out (though you can brute force them if you’re getting frustrated). The deduction outcomes are also to me less frustrating than later games because there isn’t the same degree of ambiguity about correct/incorrect choices. Basically, you can’t deduce something incorrectly. That means that without fail, congratulations, by the end of the game you’re always a genius. I guess I like being told that I’m smart and not having to worry about being a moral failure.

Unlike later games, and despite what you might expect, the overarching story requires no long-term puzzle solving. This means that you don’t need to complete it in a single sitting and you can do the game in many short bursts. I took a six-week break about halfway through and got back into it no problem. This is kind of nice, but it also makes the ending feel less rewarding.

PUZZLES

The puzzles are where this game gets genuinely bad. I’m an adventure gamer, and I like puzzles, and I found about half of these puzzles insufferable. On the bright side, there are very few repeated puzzles, except the lockpicking, which is a breeze. On the not-so-bright side, some puzzles are also the spawn of Satan.

The main problem is that this game both holds your hand too much and also at the same time not at all. What I mean by this is that the game does not tell you what you’re supposed to be doing for each mini game. There’s no time pressure, but this means a lot of clicking on the screen emptily/angrily until you figure out the mechanics of the puzzle. Fine, a bold choice, but fine.

However, on the other hand, you are also patronizingly given a “skip” option for every puzzle after a pretty short length of time. What this effectively means is that you’re only going to dedicate yourself to solving the puzzles if you a) are genuinely engaged in the individual puzzle and you figure out the mechanics pretty quickly, b) have some self-imposed rule about not skipping puzzles, or c) are masochistic. Given that my masochism quickly gives way to rage, I skipped about half the puzzles – which does mean that half of them I found genuinely enjoyable. But as I say, I’m an adventure gamer who likes puzzles. So 50/50 odds aren’t great.

CONTROLS/GAME-DESIGN FRUSTRATIONS

There are some unnecessary moments of confusion that could have been avoided through more carefully tested game design. There was one moment in particular where I got stuck and was wondering if the game had bugged, but in fact it was because the game was telling me to make sure the door was CLOSED instead of LOCKED. This led to much unnecessary angst. And yes there is a moment where you have to begin to combine objects in your inventory despite not being told that this mechanic is possible, but honestly it’s pretty obvious and NBD overall. There is some backtracking necessary, but most of the environments are very small so this isn’t a big deal either.

However, the #1 most frustrating thing in this game is the control system. There is a delay when beginning to move from a standstill, which means both turning around and moving on from dialogue grates on the nerves. Similarly, selecting what you want to click on given multiple options is a pain (this should be determined by the mouse, not the keys). Mouse clicks can also abruptly end cutscenes and puzzles (though your progress is saved, it’s still annoying). Also both Sherlock and Watson run very slowly, but they also run like huge dorks so at least it's amusing if you want to focus on the journey rather than the destination.

And last, but certainly not least, “I need something.” What Sherlock needs is never clear, though I could certainly tell you what I think he could use. This phrase could mean anything from “you don’t have the right item yet” to “you have no idea what you’re doing, shape up sonny.” Look forward to having the phrase and intonation seared into your brain in all its lazy, ambiguous glory.

OVERALL

Ultimately, to me, the positives to this game outweigh the negatives, and the frustrations I had with it were pretty minor. As long as you don’t take the game too seriously, I think you’ll have a fun time too.

I have played this game multiple times. IMO, it's got the most interesting story. I got upset when people interrupted my game play, hahaha...

For me, it's just challenging enough without being irritating. I'm used to playing primarily the Nancy Drew PC series, however, so I missed having the convenience of the checklist helping me keep track of what I need to do next. However, not having one is much more Holmesian, adding to your feeling of overall smartness when you tackle the case. Great game!

I was having fun playing this game, the mechanics were neat. The graphics, animations, sounds, textures and voice overs were not very good for 2012, very dated but I don't think they took much away from the overall experience.

After about 5 hours in it started to crash every time I saved the game. Which wouldn't be bad except it also crashed at the end of the level. So u get stuck playing the same level over and over from the beginning hoping that it won't crash when the next level loads. After about 5-6 times I just quit playing.

I'm forced to give this game a thumbs down else it would have gotten a thumbs up if I were able to finish it. From what I saw, ignoring the crashing, Id give it about 6-7/10
