good bye lotro

When you first step into Middle Earth it can be a bit overwhelming. You must remember that this game is coming up on its 15th anniversary, so there is a TON of content. Stick with it a while! It doesn't take long to see the the amount of love that has gone into bringing Tokien's world to life. I remember the first time I stepped into the Shire, or Rivendell, and thinking myself lucky to be able to see the pages of a book I love brought to the screen.
Gameplay still holds up, though does feel a little dated in some ways. It is also easy to get started as there is a free-to-play option. You can get very far without spending a dime! So, strap on your sword, steel yourself, and assist the Free People of Middle Earth in the fight against Sauron!

Grab the first 6 expansions and 2 instance clusters on sale for 99 LOTRO Points each (about $10 all together)
Get the expansions in this order
Moria (level 51-60)
isengard (level 65-75)
Rohan (level 75-85)
Helms Deep (level 85-95)
Mordor (level 105-115)
Mirkwood (level 62-65)
Instances for Isengard/Rohan
(Mirkwood is easily skippable because of overlap with other areas - Moria, Lothlorien, Enedwaith, Dunland) but is inbetween Moria and Isengard - and the Epic quest is free)

--Can be a little grindy
--Can be a little expensive getting started
--Lower population than other MMOs
Pros:
--Better lore than any MMO
--Story is actually coherent and palatable (vs. WoW or FF14)
--World is huge
--Cosmetically you can do a lot (like not wear earrings, looking at you FF14)
--It just feels good, it feels right like an MMO should feel, and it's old school
Overall it's a good game, it has its share of issues not unlike most other games.
As MMOs go, this one is my favorite (although WoW's aesthetic and gameplay will always have a place in my heart). I recommend this to older players or those who like the old school way MMOs used to be, and those into rich fantasy settings with deep lore and coherence.
If you are familiar with, and love the Lord of the Rings, then that helps a hell of a HELLUVA lot, and makes it a no-brainer that you should play or at least give it a decent whirl. This is probably a game that has to grow on you, the first impression might be that it's slow, kind of clunky, and less polished visually, but the world is beautiful and the game does grow on you pretty quick from there--especially after you get past the hurdles of paying for the first almost-but-technically-not necessary micro transactions. Smooth sailing after that.
Note:
This game has a slow and leisurely pace to it, just an overall laid back vibe; and, a friendly player base. Plus the spell effects are minimal and not going to give you sensory overload / headache.
Also Note:
My play-time on Steam is 79 hours, but I did log a decent chunk of additional playtime when I used to play this off Steam. FYI.

If you want a costume in the shop but don't want to pay for it then there's skirmish camps which between them have most of the shop costumes available for skirmish points. Skirmishes are small group or solo battles with specific objectives which rewards marks you can use to outfit and skill your companion soldier and yourself. There are huge battles as well but I've never indulged therefore I can't comment on them. It's not pay to win and has rich lore and a lot to do. The game is huge. There are several playable races. Men , hobbits, dwarves, stout axe dwarves , high and regular elves. There is also Monster play for those who want to play an orc or a spider or a warg. (It's pvp but kind of basic).
All the servers have decent communities but I would say if you like RP and friendly helpful folks then Laurelin would be your go to server.
Like ESO LOTRO has a vp service for those who wish to contribute to the ongoing development of the game.
There are interesting classes, warden, loremaster and runekeeper being but a few. Your story parallels the fellowship of ring, sometimes it crosses behind or in front as you work to secure middle earth in other ways from Sauron. The one thing I love is walking past an Npc and they talk about you. Not just saying some hero killed so and so like in ESO. For example, in a place called Trestlebridge is an NPC who will use your name and tell everyone they love the song of___ and___. You are named, you've got your own ballad, your storied. Your becoming a legend.
Yes dungeons and raids are included.
If you love LOTR and it's lore or if you simply want something story driven to play. If your an achievement hound, you'll be in heaven ( I am talking in game. Not in Steam. There are festivals every season, making LOTRO the drunkest MMO out there. There is personal race related and other premium housing. There are some amazing and some silly titles to obtain and wear with pride. Yes the hit boxes are floaty, yes it's a traditional MMO that you can solo if you want. There is good and bad to every game.
I say come play for a few days then decide for yourself.
Meet me in the mines of Moria, perhaps we can go to Rohan together or sneak around in Isenguard causing trouble only to end up in Mordor wondering what the heck are we doing there and agreeing Goblin Town in the Misty Mountains was preferable for a days jaunt..

You liked WoW Classic.
You've read the book and get excited for seeing places like Weathertop or talking to Elrond.
A lot of people complain that the game is not free to play. Well, of course it is not. This is how it goes:
You can play to lvl 30 before you need to buy quest packs. Or you can subscribe and get all all the quest packs, plus other stuff you would have to pay with the Lotro points. So you can either grind for 20 hours or go to work for 1 hour and subscribe. By lvl 30 you should know if you want like the game or not. By subbing you get to play to lvl 50. After that it's buying expansions, the first 4 sold for 32e in steam, or you can use a second hand website like me and but it for half the price.
So, right now I've played for 121 hours by paying I'd say less than 30 euros, and I've only gotten past Moria. Not everything is perfect about the game, but the world of Tolkien is what pulls me in. So to summarize, if the two things I mentioned at the start apply to you, give this one a try.

In order to refund me for the fraud that was committed, I was informed that my account would be perma-banned.
What a garbage way to treat someone that's been loyal and loved your game. Can't recommend this game at all. Go play Final Fantasy XIV, you're better off.

LOTRO is no longer that game and even though there may be some familiar faces on the development team, the content being brought out is broken and uninteresting, adding more onto the ever growing list of things that need fixing and only being given excuses until the next update where anything that came before is inevitably made irrelevant and abandoned. Never fear however! You can skip that pesky nonsense with a quick visit to the cash shop.

I can't in all honesty recommend it as a good choice for new players, unless you have a lot of money to spend.
If money is no issue, then yes, by all means, it's a great game!
While it says free to play, it's a subscription game at heart. Yes, you could technically grind til your eyes bleed getting all the points needed to have the complete game, but after level 30 or so, I think 95% of people would burn out and wish they'd never tried.
But the worst thing in my eyes, is how every expansion is full price, even ones from 10 years ago. That's just bad business, and a huge barrier for someone just starting. I believe it makes it the most expensive MMORPG there is to play.
Yes, it's a great game, and I do love it, but making a new account has made me realize how unreasonably pricey it is for a newcomer.
If you're super casual and just want to roam around experiencing Tolkien's world, and not all about getting to the end game, then I can definitely say give it a try.

The thing is I'm at that age that real life just keep me from enjoying MMOs, yet I still enjoy LotRO even if I play little each time I visit.
The best part is that I have unlocked a good portion of the game with just playing and doing deeds. I haven't paid a single copper coin so far, taking advantage of promotions and sales through the store.
But make no mistake, the developers worth every coin, they love the game and the world and it shows. They have kept it alive all those years, the changed names, they changed publishers, and they are still here, improving the game!
Give it a try!

The gameplay is old school tab targeting MMO like that of WoW Classic. So if you are looking for a game that is more action focused or fast paced... this is not it. It is hard to find low level group content on level due to most of the player base being at endgame. Though the LFF chat is always buzzing for dungeon runs ect for endgame. I have not reached max level since the first expansion of Moria so I can not tell you how that is. Heard there is a lot of grinding for traits, legendary weapon leveling ect... But I do not play this game to get my raiding or dungeon fix. If I want that I play WoW classic or FFXIV. I play this game mostly solo and to escape. I love the world they crafted here... the music is next level. I play because I love Middle-Earth and the community is super welcoming.
It is F2P and they were one of the first too switch over to that payment model so it used to be super gatekeeping and still is a bit. But to get a lot of those restrictions taken off pay $15 and sub for a month and it takes a lot of those away. They also recently bundled all their previous expansions and such for $60. It used too be all either $20 each for the oldest up to $40 for the second recent and they got a lot of backlash for making you pay that much for such old content. Since it is F2P i don't think personally $60 is a lot of all old content.

If you like a big (really huge), diverse and adventurous world to explore this is it.
The epic storyline can be played for free and you can easily get max level doing only the free content.
In fact there are so many quests you can easily not do all of them. This game has been around for a while so the locations you visit in the beginning aren't as beautiful as the newer stuff.
All in all, it's a great world to get lost in and escape reality.

It's free, so why not try it?
It's actually quite scary how closely the game is aligned with the books. This game is 100% not based on the movies at all, but that makes the game quite unique in its own way. The graphics are nostalgic, but also modern enough to be able to respectably appreciate the landscape. This game's map is HUGE. It takes several weeks IN REAL LIFE to travel on foot across the entire map. That being said, the expansions for the game are very expensive. I wouldn't devote myself to this game unless you are willing to pay at least $300+ for the full experience of the game.
That being said, the free to play part of the game isn't bad at all. Again, it's free, so why not try it?

As MMO's go, it's standard fare, crafting, levelling, and of course - End Game means rerunning the same most recent dailies/raids ad nauseam as you wait for the next ex-pac, but at least there are regular ex-pacs.
They need to make old content relevant by increasing difficulty and rewards accordingly, there is voluminous group content that I have yet to run after 3700+ hours because no one's interested, there's no reward or challenge going back.
The good -
The social environment is absolutely unmatched on any MMO I've played, this game attracts intelligent and decent people, while there are occasional spats in chat, it's almost always upbeat, interesting & funny, Tolkien lore is often discussed and these folks KNOW their Tolkien.
There is a boatload of story content, to a fault even, to where levelling takes a comparatively long time, months or more.
Logging on to LOTRO is like watching an old Cheers episode, familiar names, decent conversations and, oh yeah, there's a game there too.
I still play other games, but LOTRO is the one I subscribe to.
If you're burnt out on toxic players, this game might be worth a try, especially where it's free to try.

There are multiple websites associated with LOTRO and multiple account pages on different sites that lead to a lot of confusion and only one gives you the relevant information you need or allows you to subscribe. Some pages simply don't work or partially work. The URL that the game sends you to for the store is a broken URL. You must launch the game from the executable and not Steam for the in-game store to work.
Content is broken up into updates, quest packs, expansions, etc that are or are not available to free players/premium/VIP (subscribers) and can be overly confusing.
They are not instilling a lot of faith in players.

I started playing this in about 2009 when it wasn't on steam and would have had over a thousand hours invested into it.
I recently installed again through steam as I felt nostlagic lately and really missed it. This game (along with Dungeon Master on the Atari in the 80's) have given me the most entertainment and memories than any other game.
I stopped playing about ?4 yrs ago in disgust when it turned to P2P. Even deleted my old maxed out dwarf and said good by the clan. I carried on for a few months, but got really sick of basically playing in a pop-store constantly asking me to buy stuff. I couldn't travel to areas I once could (through solid grinding) and the game starting changing for the worse. That was the Siege of Mirkwood.
Mines of Moria was practically perfect and was the peak of this game. Massive maps, good range of difficulty, full servers and great community.
It was the Mines of Moria that made me reinstall a week ago and thought id give i ago. I was immediately hit by how dated it looked, and again, the frustration of 'buy me' pops ups.
I then popped online to the reviews here and noted have everyone has said the game is on its last legs and things quickly got worse. The trait changes sound horrible and helms deep sounds subpar. Ive decided to not bother starting again and will delete again.
Ill keep my memories. So sad the way its gone, after Moria.
Id probably recommened for new players just for the exploration and walking around Tolkiens world and then stop when you finish Moria possible. It might be too quiet to really enjoy though.

pros good gameplay and friendly community planty to do lots of contant to keep you busy for weeks
good craftingn system where you can legit just haunt stuff gather wood or iron and forge it into armor or weapons
cons ... theres a bunch of things tucked behind the real money market system that youd think should be either free or for subscribing .. they screwd with the match makeing system sense i last played 13 months ago..and it hardly works and is not overly complex for the casuel player the graphics are a bit dated in my mind ..and combat feels like it could use with a update in the animations
to answer the qestion of weather or not id recommaned it to you reading this...yes actuely it is worth the 15 dollars to sub too from a -10 to +10 id say +6

This game has been through shit and backwards, it has it's cons and pros, but it keeps coming back with updates that do change the games mechanics and cons. The lag atm is unberable, but that's mainly because SSG are stuck in the toilet. The last 1-2 months, the servers have been laggy as hell, with tons of bugs and weird stuff happening. You log onto one of your characters and you may be stuck in loading screen for over 5 minutes, this may occur on that same character for close to an hour, cause there is a shit in the system.
But if you look at my hours, thats just some of my hours... I have most likely played over 10 thousand hours, but december 2019 I installed LOTRO on Steam, therefor I got some extra hours here. The game is amazing. The lore is breath taking, with some amazing quests, voice actors, cinematics and the crafting so relaxing and fun. The game has US, EU and DEUTCH/FRANCE/RP servers. Every now and then, they throw in a server just for an event. Just recently we had a PvP server only for an event, once the event ended, you could transfer your characters on that server to other servers for free. We have Legendary Servers, which are VIP Access only. Those servers are for people, who wish to endure the end game levels we had back in 2010 and so on.
The people on this game are amazing, so kind and fun. World chat can be toxic from time to time, because some one starts mentioning politics, and it all goes to shit. You can turn of your World Chat if you dont feel like seeing all the shit in chat or leave it be and have a laugh while having a cup of tea.
Graphics are kind of out dated, but they fit the games perspective quite well (also cause SSG cant afford fuck all)
Overall, LOTRO has some cons and pros, but the cons are mainly hinted towards SSG's wallet.
Enjoy Middle-Earth everyone. (GET VIP) <3

On the other hand, their microtransaction/account status system is sorta confusing in that it reminds me of SWTOR's, but not quite.

Game play. Lets talk about that shall we. The graphics yes are old and slightly dated. it reminds me of a early 2000's late 90's game style. However the detail that they put into it is absolutely astounding from an aesthetic perspective. When I make my horse turn left or right it puts it's ears back and turns it's head, like a real horse. The last MMO to give us that kind of mount realism was BDO and that was a pretty recent release, this game has been out for awhile so you get where I am going with this. Yet I don't remember this game getting that much hype. Even the leveling and skill tree design is a bit realistic as well as the currency flow. I would be lying if I didn't sometimes feel like I was sucked into the movie and I was playing a role in helping Frodo destroy the ring. There isn't a nagging questline that you HAVE to follow in order to progess. In fact, I am pretty sure this game EXPECTS you to just go out explore, talk to people and do your own thing at your own pace. Group instances are a thing, but they are not in your face, nor is PVP if you are into that sort of thing, this may not be your cup of tea. If you like chilling out in a game and fishing and seeing new things and exploring all of Middle Earth, then this is your game for sure. I have a cup of tea in front of me after just having my first breakfast and about to log on and thought I need to review this and let people know about this really cool game. Download it, play it, enjoy.

I played this game from 2007(release)-2011 and on and off after that. Ofc the number of players, the stabillity and quality has declined in recent years. But it's still a great MMO.
Pros:
- The best visualization of middle-earth in any game. (So as a LOTR-Fan you kinda have to give it a try!)
- Great story and love for detail.
- Super huge ingame-world.
- Great community. You will always find someone to help you or talk to.
Cons:
- dated and clunky combat.
- Not-so-great class balancing.
- Mediocre engame-PvE (mostly grinding marks and stuff). The instances still look nice tho.
- No real PvP (honestly: if you want PvP in your MMO - don't play this!)
In conclusion: If you just want to explore a great and beautiful fantasy-world: go for it! If you want a great PvE and PvP MMO: there are probably better games out there.

Now... in 2020... a different story emerges. The engine is the same, of course, but they have updated and tweaked the game to the point where it is once again a relevant game to play, a definite MMORPG choice and a delight to be back within Middle Earth in all it's precioussssss glory!
... plus, dwarves. 'Nuff said.

Firstly, the community in all but the highest level areas is dead. Of course, this was always going to happen, but as the level cap increases it is harder to justify playing the game when there is no community at the lower levels. Some of the best instances in the game (the ones in the original release) no longer get enough players for them so you will never get to experience it.
When it went free to play originally, the standard of the community lowered a lot. It also opened it up to in-game-gold sellers to spam the message boxes with advertisement. It has somewhat recovered from this, but not entirely.
The combat has aged poorly. I would not say it was the best even back at release, but now it is completely outdated. Due to this, there is very little they can do with it to spark interest. They have changed menus and the way certain skills and abilities work, but there has not been a real change to the combat since the Rohan expansion and horse combat (which was not the best, to be honest, but it was something new).
Balancing of classes for group instances is poor. Champions are practically useless for end game content now; most parties prefer not to have them. If you want to play this game, do not make a Champion. They used to be one of the main damage dealers with the Hunter, but have been surpassed by other classes now.
The store is more prominent than it was when the game originally went free to play. It is in your face all the time now with more items to buy that help you to level quicker.
The game is dying. No matter what people say, it is dying; all the signs point to it. The new content is of lower quality and seems to come slower and slower. The community only exists at the high level end (very few new players); any new characters you see will likely just be alts of existing players, who will likely only be interested in power levelling.
Support for the game is getting worse and worse. Getting help from the developers is really difficult now.
A final things to take into count is how long this game is going to last. With the announcement of Amazon's Lord of the Rings MMORPG, it puts definite time limit on the games life.

In addition, the fact that there is a dedicated RP server where the conventions are enforced is an immediate draw for me. WoW had RP servers, but even in Moon Guard, you'd still see toons leaping around with ridiculous or offensive names harassing you for roleplaying. I haven't yet seen this on Laurelin, and the fact that there are posted rules guidelines is encouraging to me.

But when I found out that Daybreak took this game over in 2016, I just couldn't continue playing. Not only has that company ruined so many MMOs I love (such as cancelling Asheron's Call, and grabbing EQ and EQ2), but they are also the company who has changed the prices from little back in the day, to what you see now.
Daybreak also wants to not only share your info (they say so in their agreement you agree to) but they also want your ISP info!
Not worth it.

TL;DR: The game is very fun with a few friends in a party. Lots of free content to get you through 50+ hours. Some freemium limitations creep up but don't cause any real issues.
I played this for many hours back in...2009/2010ish and had a lot of fun with my friends. Came back recently with the same friends+ and it's been pretty great. We haven't spent real money on it, so there are a couple of freemium drawbacks, but nothing terrible.
Pros:
+A lot of free content to play through. Up to around level 60 I believe.
+ New developer has simplified the way you earn new skills (Ya just get them, instead of going to town and talking to your class trainer and spending money to learn them)
+ Music really feels like Lord of the Rings
+ Having a party (fellowship) really feels like you're working together. We picked jobs that compliment eachother, so one is making armor, one is making weapons, etc. You get a sense of accomplishment sharing recipes and ingredients to make fun stuff for your team.
Freemium cons:
- Gold cap at 5 gold: None of us have run into an issue where we need more money. In fact, when we hit our cap we just find something that can be upgraded, like your vault storage space, and spend it on that. Otherwise it's not caused any issues
- LOTRO Points: or Turbine points as they used to be called. This is the in-game, premium currency, but you do earn the currency by fulfilling things in-game. You have to spend them to get the horse riding skill, but we all basically had enough when we got to Bree where you can get your first horse.
- Swift Travel locked/limited inventory space: Takes longer to get to places and you throw away stuff you don't need or head to town and sell/make/store stuff in your vault.

Pros:
-Fantastic community, The LOTRO community is still very active! with thousands online on the main servers. just ask world chat or anyone running around and 95%of the time they will help you. the community does not tolerate flaming, trolling or harassment. And the devs listen to the community and make sure any issues are taken care of in a timely manner.
-Class Variety, the classes in this game are very unique for a tab target MMO, With each class feeling like a whole new game.
-Content, LOTRO has more landscape and quests than any other MMO that I know of. I have over 5 months logged on to a single toon, and still havent discovered all locations, done all the quests, raids, instances ect.
-Lore friendly, LOTRO is based on the middle earth novels. not the movies. The devs have succeeded in making the most lore friendly Tolkien game. while mixing in their own story leading the player down an epic quest to save middle earth while the fellowship is destroying the ring. I highly recommend reading the quests for the great story.
Cons:
-graphics, the game is over 10 years old so the graphics are not going to hold up to the new mmos.
-PVP, the pvp in lotro is dwindling and does not get much love from the devs. There are usually scheduled nights where you can have 30v30 battles, Yet you will have to endure lots of lag.
-server lag. This is the biggest con, the lotro servers are very dated and the lag can make it almost unplayable during raids, and PvP.
Is LOTRO free?
tldr... no it is not.
you can play free up to about level 30. but if you want to go past there and access the other 95% of the game you will need to subscribe or buy lotro points. IMO this is understandable because you have a small dev team that are pouring all their efforts into the game. They gotta make a living somehow. later on there is some issues with progression being eaither grind or pay.
The game is not focused on competitive play so really this is not an issue.
8/10 still favorite game.
