This is a pretty solid game by itself.
Unfortunately it suffers from an extremly poor level design:
In an isometric ARPG you should always design the maps in a way that the player goes from bottom to top and never from top to bottom!
This is especially annoying when facing ranged enemies who can shoot you before you can even see them.
I died multiple times to ranged enemies just because of this.
If I had seen them I would have just casted dim vision (or whatever the name of the Thaumaturge skill is which temporarily blinds ranged enemies).
An alternative would be a rotating camera like for example in Grim Dawn.

Ich habe mit Deathtrap angefangen und war davon begeistert. Hier sollte man allerdings auf einen Sale warten. (Oder noch besser: TIAoVan Helsing Final Cut kaufen. Das gleiche Spiel nur fertig entwickelt.)

Pro:
- Hack and Slay vom Feinsten
- Schöne Skillbäume
- Viele weitere Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten
- Voll Co-op spielbar

Kontra:
- Sehr kurze Story

Schade.

Fresh off of 80 hours in Grim Dawn, we figured we would try out some Van Helsing games since they were on sale at the time. We found out after you progress to a certain point, the enemies ramp up and just fucking slog your asshole like some sort of torture in hell. So I guess the progress wall is just brutal in this game but even other than that, I remember your abilities not being particularly strong or even strong enough to put off a quick death.

It's been a while since we played this, and seeing it in my library while clearing up some space on the hard drive, I saw that it was unreviewed. I wish I could go more in depth about this but it's been a few years. Just get Grim Dawn, and if you have Grim Dawn, get something else.

Very pleasant clicker.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is an indie road game, with minimum story and loads of action. In other words, the game makes the most of Diablo. Our hero gets a letter from Borgova with an ask for help and around 80% of the game is the process of getting to the sender slashing on our way hordes of Slavic monsters and doing side-quests. Even though the story is extreme shallow, the locations are nice and pleasant, and it's really fun to tear apart upcoming enemies with new skilles keep on being unlocked. Skill tree is well-thought and depending on your play style you can make Van Helsing a close combat tank, a gunslinger or an abracadabra magician.

Characters are not very memorable, except for Lady Katerina - our companion. She helps during fights, but also cheers up with snappy, sarcastic comments. Frankly, the game keeps the level thanks to that character, otherwise, I'd get bored.

We've got other two playable characters - Arcane Mechanic and Mage. They add another 28h of gameplay if you'd like to try something different, but I can see they more about playing online with friends so you can have variety.

The music is climatic, typical for Slavic style forests, but after playing the game 3 times (been playing for achievements) the flute part was becoming really, really annoying as the musician is intentionally playing out of tune and I ended up turning the music off completely and going with something of my own in the background.

The game has a slight steampunk vibe which personally I am not a fan of, but mostly it is a pleasant hack'n'slash which I'd recommend. Has its bugs as it's a small indie project, but they nothing major about them and they mostly occur while playing in online mode.

Neither Incredible Nor Adventurous

Van Helsing is a simple Diablo clone with a throwaway story, poorly voiced cheesily written characters (though not in a good way), and a loot system that will have you asking how long to finish the game rather than inspire you to keep replaying for better rewards. The highlight of the game is exploring the maps which are well designed, and atmospheric but unfortunately that in itself is not enough of a compelling experience for me to recommend the title. Even on sale Van Helsing is a waste of time that you're better off putting somewhere else.

Isometric looter-shooter with a fun story, snarky, often toungue-in-cheek-y dialogs, solid game mechanics. Could be a bit longer or would've been served well with an expansion, but so what...

I have a mixed feeling about this game, but i lean towards the positives. On the outside, It's good game with great polish. Though, when you spent long enough playing, some flaws will disturb your enjoyment.

First, i like the gothic, victorian-era eastern-european theme this game is set. A fresh theme for ARPG. Another thing i liked about this game is the fact that you'll play with a sidekick, Lady Katarina. A beautiful ghost with gritty humors. This make Van Helsing stands apart from other hack-and-slash / diablo-clones, where you fight enemies alone. She's not only helping you beating monsters but also often makes conversation with you throughout the quests, so it makes the game more lively than just a hacking and slashing enemies. I really enjoyed the interactions between Van Helsing and Katarina, and sometimes I get a little chuckle from them. The story is well structured and has interesting plot, albeit quite simple.

The good: It has nice looking graphics, great atmosphere and architecture designs, solid RPG elements, decent combats, many QoL features to assist you while in game, likeable characters, interesting story and dialogue choices, funny humor (rarely seen in this genre) and also surprisingly well voice acting.

The bad: The most annoying flaw is enemy placements. It's really, really awful. Because this game's combat success is heavily affected by character positioning and mastering map's spaces, getting cornered by enemies with no gap to escape is fatal. There will be situations where you enters a map for the first time and you will be suddenly greeted by numerous horde of enemies that will kill you instantly, so you have to restart, try to kill at least one enemy, dies again and repeat. This plus the facts that some enemies are bullet sponges will frustrate your playing. Not to mention some respawn point are located far away from the said map's entrance. The game also lacking enemy variations, you will fight the same enemies many times. Despite having interesting skill/spell system, they are limited to 2 shortcut at a time, so it kinda sucks if I want to use many of them, because I have to choose which two I'd like to bind to the shortcut slots each time. Also i feel that the equipment sold in shops are useless, and you'll get much better ones from enemies or a quest anyway, so no point having shops other than to sell loots and buy potions.

Overall, it's a decent game, and I would recommend it to ARPG / Diablo-like enjoyers.

Meh. Bugged getting settings just right. Looks pretty good plays ok. Prepare for kiting, at least with thaumaturge on hard setting. Kiting gets old pretty quick. The ghostly side kick(pet) you can level up is a neat concept. If the diablo thing is your jam you may enjoy this for its differences. Leveling and character customization is ok. Grim dawn is an all around better option for this type of gameplay with less kiting, better balancing, and character customization.

And the fixed camera! Bah

This is one of those games you probably didn't expect much out of but end up being pretty damn good. If you love Diablo, Torchlight, Grim Dawn etc etc...then I wouldn't see a reason why you wouldn't enjoy this one. I started and it actually kept me glued, the level up system is fun, having a ghost companion and upgrading her too is also fun, and a satisfying loot system and just a good game all around. Give it a shot!

Decent indie isometric action RPG with interesting setting. Enjoyable experience overall but you must temper your expectations because game lacks depth and complexity in some departments. Can recommend for Hack and Slash fans.

Pros:
- Good visual fidelity;
- Humorous and helpful companion;
- Great enemy variety;
- Good soundtrack and voice acting;
- Decent optimisation;
- Creative locations and enemies design;

Cons:
- New character classes lock behind paid DLCs;
- Odd difficulty spikes;
- Second half of the game is too drag out;

Mechanically satisfying, fun classes (including better 2 weapon melee than the final cut version), story is meh. Final cut version multiplayer broke beyond repair for my group after changing DirectX version, and I still can't figure out why after nearly a year. Haven't tried it in this version yet but I'm not optimistic.

Unfortunately the gameplay is penalized by poor game engine implementation. The story is great and diablo esthetics are fantastic. But the game configuration don't work properly and game logic has a really hard time when it comes to multi-threading by consistently freezing mobs while rendering still going. Now, I'm rushing through the end in order to play the second title. I really hope it will be a little better technically.

Giving this game a thumbs up, but out of ten i would give it 6 maybe. Too many annoying things like overwhelming swarms of enemies (especially at spawn spots), improving items was interesting, but not enough of that and not so many good item drops. Overwhelming stats numbers. Maybe this was an attempt to create some advanced version of RPG slasher, but it feels like it became a bit overcomplicated in some parts. Had much more fun with Titan Quest. Didn't like the tower defense part at all. Artistic style also wasn't very attractive and the story writing was bland. Final boss finale is just.. maybe they ran out of money for the script writer. But it might still scratch the slasher itch. I wanted something different after completing Titan Quest. So it was good at least for that.

It's like diablo with a better story. Only downsides are that 1) you can't play co-op and 2) it isn't very well optimized to handle the massive amount of creature on-screen sometimes. I can run Cyberpunk 2077 at max settings without any issue, but I somehow lag when 50 robots are thrown at me at once.
Gripes aside, I'll probably come back for the other two games because it's an interesting game to play.

It's one of those one-and-done arpg games, like Torchlight or Vikings - Wolves of Midgard and so on, which you play once and forget.

Graphics are blurry.

Decent amount of different locations. All locations have only 3-4 different enemies and from time to time they even repeat in other levels too.

Combat is slow and quite clunky. Most skills have semi-big cooldowns. Itemization is very basic. You constantly get new and slightly better items, but they are all the same - some more resistances, some more hp or slightly better attribute/damage stats - that's all. NOTHING unique about them. Your character will still feel the same.

There are a few tower defense quests, but they are very straightforward and slow.
Some enemies have terrible balance. Some die like flies, others can drain your life to 0 within a few seconds. Mana leech enemies are stupidly designed. If all your skills cost mana - you can't do sh1t against them.

Overall game balance has issues all over the place. Most active skills are very underwhelming. At least if you play as Arcane Mechanic. Didn't bother with other classes. There is no endgame at all. Unless you want to do the same dull content over and over again just to fill all your item slots with unique items.

Prepare to die. A lot. And lose all your gold.

Dark Souls is a tiny little puppy, in comparison to The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. Because it's harder? Not exactly.

This is a dark fantasy (artstyle only) action RPG with isometric viewpoint, full of random loot, quests, NPC's and hordes of enemies - a Diablo offspring. You're in control of Van Helsing's son, who is doing what he does best: investigating and hunting monsters/wild beasts. Just like his father. But Van Helsing is not alone. You have an AI controlled NPC to support you. A human ghost/naga hybrid, of sorts. Lady Katerina.

You can adjust her behaviour acccording to your interests. Want to go after the gunslinger skill tree and rain down hell upon your foes, from afar? Tell her to tank on the enemies with melee attacks up close. Tired of picking up stupid, cheap loot? Set her to pick only the rare ones.

You can also adjust other gameplay settings like the ability to drink health potions automatically when your health falls below a certain percentage and buy and sell items in stocks. Everything is very user friendly as you go on your merry way throughout the game. Until you get wrecked non-stop by the close to infinite enemy lines. Sometimes you can't take three steps without meeting 500 enemies.

Each time you die, you spend 10% of your gold purse to respawn - and the developers are very proud of this mechanic because it happens way too damn often, to the point that it gets boring. Gold is easy to come by, fortunately, because the majority of enemies drop loot and there's a large number of chests available in the world.

Remember what I wrote, up above, though? That it's only dark in the artstyle? Yes, indeed. The Incredible Adventures is just a regular fantasy title disguided as dark. It has witty, sarcastic and funny dialogue, from time to time and quirky, stupid characters, overall. No moody and creepy atmospheres or jump scares. This is not a survival horror.

Level variety is nice. You spend the majority of your time in forests, bogs, sewers, swamps and laboratories.

Soundtrack is what you'd expect from everything Steampunk-esque. Voice-acting is good. Graphics are okay (the game forces DirectX 9 but you can change it in the settings).

Overall, it's a fun game but the final boss battle is lackluster (didn't even had a theme song) and it ends in a cliffhanger (because it's a trilogy). Dying all the time gets fucking old very fast, though. But you go on because gameplay is relaxing and not unforgiving.

I got a stupid, very annoying, bug related to item enchantment, though. It locked my game every time. Beware.

It's a good game but it is pretty buggy..

Great game par the bugs but for a 2013 game it's quite demanding on system resources.
Even on reduced graphical settings it can use anywhere between 20-40% of a RTX 2060Super 8GB GPU.
Peaking above 40% when fighting groups of monsters.

The game itself is buggy in parts.
Multiplayer coop can lag sometimes, and one level was jittery/laggy for me when I was running it solo as well. Despite my GPU and CPU being more than capable and having over half of their resources unused.

Loading / Teleporting can also be buggy and not work sometimes.

This said, it's a very enjoyable game and I like it a lot. The bugs are a little frustrating but I'm just dealing with them.

Is this game worth full price? - No
Is it worth getting on sale? - Yes, if 50% off or more.

I'm yet to try out Van Helsing II and III :) Super excited for those!

Note: I've not recommended it because the game needs a decent amount of fixing and optimising to justify the full price of this game.

If you're willing to deal with bugs, have a good computer and can get this game on sale then go for it :) It's a lot of fun, great Diablo clone.

However I remember trying this game out years ago when I first bought it and wasn't able to play it because of the issues.. Therefore I can't recommend it at full price.

Really cute little top down game, Resembles Diablo. I particularly enjoy the trophy collecting from bosses and playing this game as part of a group. Has some small issues with lag and frame rate due to it being quite old and poorly optimised which also causes crashes sometimes. Over all quite an interesting story line and cute art style!

It's the same thing over and over and over and over...
Each level you advance it's the same thing:
a zerg wave of mobs tha pose no threat
and when you reach the end of the levels there's a boss with a stupid amount of HP that has basic atack rotations.
This game is the equivalent of a flour mill. Smells and looks good. But my god it's boring after the first run

The scaling in this game is trash. Starting out is fucking impossible on Heroic. Even Normal is obnoxiously difficult. Your abilities are all garbage, you do no damage, you have no fucking AoE at all and they expect you to somehow deal with waves and waves of overscaled garbage that literally hits 50 times harder than you do. You have no HP, there's no way to sustain what little you do have outside of chugging potions and a shitty long cooldown heal. Really really bad.

Fun game with an enjoyable plot but nothing to deep or expansive just nice and simple well written. Lots of banter between Van helsing and his ghostly companion keep things interesting as well as the numerous references to the classical tales aswell as more modern media. There are a few different builds you can try out more so if you have the DLC characters and you are able to respec at anytime via NPC's so you'll have plenty to experiment with and reasons to do multiple playthroughs. There is also Newgame+ so you get a good amount for your money. The story was surprisingly long but not overly with lots of interesting locations to explore. All in all it's well worth the money!

Gameplay

In this game, you are the monster hunter Van Helsing and your job is to well...kill monsters. The game revolves around, again, killing monsters. You are called to Borgovia to help out as a monster hunter.

Gameplay is very similar to Diablo style games. I believe ARPG is typically used to describe the type of game. Not entirely sure though. This is generally a type of game that you kill a ton of enemies and pick up loot from them. The main difference I would say you have here is that this game you have a companion, Lady Katarina to help you. You can choose to do a type of Tank and Ranged, though this might not work out super well all the time. Lady Katarina is probably one of the biggest highlights of this game. The quips and conversations with her actually give her a unique personality.

Unfortunately, with the good there is always some bad. There are a ton of enemies in this game. I mean a ton. I would say a typical pull is around 7-15 enemies at one time for one group. And each group is spaced VERY close together. And believe it or not, there is actually not enough enemies to adequately have you leveled for later areas. I ended up receiving items 2-3 items over my level upon entering the last areas. Add to this that I believe there is some damage mitigation for level differences since pulls were really aggravating at the beginning of the level and slowly got better as I leveled up in an area, and it seems like more XP needs to be awarded or you need more enemies. The game by default keeps maps cleared, so one way to go around this is to enable respawn in the options.

One final good thing is that there is a casual difficulty, and based on what I am seeing in reviews and guides, there appears to be no achievement penalty for playing on an easier mode. (I played on Normal).

Controls

Controls are typically keyboard and mouse with the mouse used to attack and move. However, you can use a controller if you want. Based on how the game is coded, if you want to use a controller you need to have it plugged in before you launch the game. Also, you need to have the controller unplugged when you want to use the keyboard and mouse until you switch off the auto-detect setting.

Speaking of settings, you can easily rebind any keys that you want. I chose to rebind the movement keys (I prefer to have a main option besides mouse movement) to WASD. For some reason, this game has a couple of rather useless keybinds (like Glory Panel) for the main story bound to keys around WASD. Overall, it controls as I would expect from this type of game.

Visuals

This game have very high visuals so that it looks pretty. This game starts out in back country areas. So it's forested, but it's still kinda dark/gloomy. Eventually you'll move into the main city area, which is dark and gloomy.

Unfortunately, this game does not appear to be made with anything above 1080p60 in mind. Options are included for 1440p, but no framerate options are available past 60 except for unlimited. I had quite a few issues trying to wrestle with the graphics of this game. I managed to get it in an okay spot but that did not always fix some of the issues. I think it would've worked better to cap at 60hz. There were times I would drop down to around 93 FPS from 143 FPS and occasionally would stutter. I got some real bad hitching at one part but I think that is CPU or hard-drive related. One last thing, ALL cutscenes are locked to 30FPS according to my framerate counter. There isn't a ton of movement, but it's kinda noticeable and doesn't make sense when everything else would theoretically be made for 60fps.

Audio

I personally think the Audio is this games biggest weakness, beyond the absurd amount of enemies. At default settings, stuff is fairly loud, except for voice over. Starting with the voice over, this was generally decent, especially for main characters. There are a few instances where it isn't that great though (last boss *cough*). Moving on to battle sounds. This is quickly the most aggravating part of the audio. Many of the monsters you fight are extremely annoying with the sound effects they make. Lastly, the music. In some locations I didn't really notice the music, but one or two tracks became really apparent after a while and it appears they are used in a lot of the locations. It gets kinda tiresome because they are kinda repetitive in how they sound. I actually turned down the music volume so I didn't have to hear it as much. I personally think some of the sound design could have been improved, but it is what it is.

Miscellaneous

I started up this game because I had an itch to play Path of Exile but didn't really want to download that and have it patch every other day. Maybe this jaded my opinion a bit on it, but I really don't feel like it scratched that itch. It's unfortunate.

The story is okay. It's not super amazing since it's kinda basic, but it's at least semi-interesting. I won't go into more details cuz spoilers.

Pathing. In forested areas, there are bushes without leaves that prevent you from going through them but are not exactly obvious that you can't. It's more just an annoyance than anything else.

This game features monster initiated crowd control, pulls, and teleports. I honestly find these extremely irritating. Especially since the CCs do not prevent the enemies from killing you while you are trying to break out as they are destructible traps.

I felt the pacing for this game was just about right. The end was about when I was starting to get tired of it, and I was killing everything and doing all the side quests. So about 20 hours seems to be about right for this game's playtime.

Lastly, this game has quite a few easter eggs, some are obvious, others not so much. I'm sure there are plenty more that I missed.

Summary

You're probably thinking, gee Py, that's a ton of anger spewed there, why the thumbs up? Well the reason is I wouldn't say it's a horrible game. I feel some of the issues, especially with how the graphics were looking is a result of me trying to play a rather OLD game. 1440p/144hz wasn't really mainstream then. Others, like sounds, are completely subjective and some people may really like them. The remaining issues of busloads of enemies and CC aren't necessarily things that break the game. Plus, it has some shine-through characteristics, like Lady Katarina.

So overall, I would say it's okay. Not great. but also not bad. It was fairly enjoyable.

The game itself is fun but, at least on multiplayer, it is so frustratingly buggy. First the portal would not open to the next area so had to restart the game. This wasn't too much of a loss considering we were early in. This then happened again much later in the game and were unable to progress. The bugs make the game unplayable. We tried all of the fixes we could find but these were all very old. There has clearly been no recent effort to improve the game. Do not waste your money, even on sale, on a game you can't even finish.

TLDR: Two hours sunk into the game as an Arcane Mechanic, which is the worst build for a character apparently due to an unbeatable boss with regeneration (regenerating Vrikolak), who runs away unless you specialized in having the mini-bot skills, which you can then glitch him into a corner in order to keep enough consistent damage up.

Game looks great running on my high-end rig. Sounds great. Overall, it's a decent Diablo clone. I wouldn't recommend it simply because of lousy game design. Unless you spend some time researching online, you'll discover that certain character builds are just impossible to progress past certain points. As an action RPG, if your game SHOULD have disclaimers about impossible options that are given to your players, but doesn't, then it should be a hard pass. A player that purchases a product shouldn't have to scour forums to figure out if the design of the product is flawed to the point that it's features are actual detriments.

A Diablo II clone with charming graphics. The dialogues, and especially voice acting are terribly cheesy. But what's most important, the game's difficulty is far from a stroll, even on lower difficulty levels.

My advice to you is: if you enjoy challenging ARPG's, go for it. Otherwise, this game will seem too hard and frustrating. It certainly did to me, pretty much from the very beginning.

The only reason I'm giving it a thumbs up is out of respect for other, more hard-core gamers who seem to enjoy it.

Honestly, I don't know how i feel about this game. In general, it's a decent game but still something doesn't feel right about it but anyway i'll keep it short.

Likes:
  • The interactions between Lady Katarina and Van Hellsing were really cool. They had some funny and sarcastic dialogues.
  • Rich monster and item pool.
  • Great Side Quests, i'm glad they weren't just typical side quests like in other games. It's always boring to collect quest items, and kill a certain amount of monsters for an NPC.
  • There was a dungeon where you build traps and destroy the monster waves (btw you still play as Van Helsing not just watch it), but yeah i was surprised to see a Tower Defense game in an Action-RPG.

Dislikes:
  • Story was kinda short and complicated, i didn't realize that it would end that quickly i mean i was still searching for a decent weapon for myself but i found myself fighting the final boss so randomly.
  • Some monsters were so FAST and hitting so hard. I've never died as many times in any other game as i died in this one.
  • I've played as Thaumaturge class and i legit hated his skill tree, every single ability was so weak as in damage and AoE.

I think I'll give it 7.5/10, maybe i should give the other games of the serie a try so i can understand the story better.

I gave The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing more chance than I have given to any game just to be able to like and recommend it but it disappointed me every time I played.

The graphics and the plot seem nice, no problem with those. I liked having Lady Katarina as a side character. The map seems quite big and there seems to be a lot of places to discover. These all look intriguing enough to give this game a try. If you like a classic ARPG game, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing might worth a shot.

However, I'm not recommending it as fighting enemies is very annoying and it prevents you from enjoying the game. The game basically swarms you with enemy hordes that are way stronger than you and in order to defeat them you either have to hit & run, or die during the fight, then respawn and come back to kill the horde off (some enemy hordes are so strong that you may have to die and come back multiple times to defeat them). Healing spells and potions have incredibly long cooldowns. Although AOE spells are your best options to defeat your enemies, in general skills are not as useful as I expected them to be.

All in all, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing did not meet my expectations and I advise you to avoid this game.

This game plays very similarly to other games of this genre like Grim Dawn, Titan Quest, and Diablo II. the main differences that sets this apart are as follows:

1: Dialogue. Not just from the occasional npc but from you and your companion as well, sometimes just as happy or weird banter when you are in the middle of nowhere. Which brings me to point.

2: No matter where you are, you will be swarmed with beasts etc to a level that the term 'bullet hell' could almost be applied. Its wave after wave of monsters every oh, 10 steps or so. Sometimes even less. This can make the game very challenging, so to pass to anywhere else successfully, you need to plan your pulls of monsters. If you are new to games of this genre or simply want to be able to mindlessly burn through everything in your path- give this one a pass, as it will be much harder than what you are looking for even on the easiest setting it has.

3. You can choose to be a Warrior, Mage, or Engineer. You cannot choose your gender in this game, but at least here there is a story linked reason so I wont put this as a con.

4: Easter eggs everywhere! If you are a fan of the old classic horror movies and books, you will find a ton of Easter eggs here. Worth getting the game for classic horror fan gamer types like myself if only for the nostalgia love this provides. Lugosi river, anyone?

Now for the cons:

None of these cons are an actual fail point, or I would not be recommending the game.I am only putting them here for the sake of transparency:

1: Skill and level up system is about as cliched as it gets. So many games use this exact same style for this exact same genre that you don't really need to do much learning here ( which again may be good or bad depending on you experience level with this type of game). This features the same style as
Hellgate: London, Titan Quest , Diablo 2, and on and on. Again if you are new to these types of games this will be a good thing. For old hands used to these types of games, this will be a bit depressing but will not interfere with the actual gameplay itself.

2: Graphic drain - no seriously. If you have a lower end pc, even with the age of this game you will still likely want t go into options and turn the video quality way down. That is unless you want to wait 3-5 minutes every time you switch areas looking at the (admittedly pretty map design) loading screen. If your CPU is low quality, save yourself the waiting time and turn that as low as it will go. The graphics themselves are old enough that this will not make a ton of difference. If you have a good or great pc, ignore this point as it will not apply to you in any way.

Other notes:

These are not good or bad, but just side notes to do with as you will:

1. Sound. You get the music, you get the environmental sounds, you get the battle noises. You get the occasional quip or witty banter. Not bad or Stellar, just a thing the game has. The game does have full Subtitles for the hearing impaired (or folks like myself who want to be able to read what is said in case the sound of battle makes me miss part of it), so that would be a positive but again this is fairly standard in every rpg so its remaining just as a note of interest.

2. Loot. the loot here is what you have seen in pretty much every similar rpg. It does have some account bound items but as most are playing this game solo or co opp, this is not really relevant one way or the other either. Just another note of interest.

3. Quests and Side Quests: Side quests are usually same areas you need to pass through for the main quests. (I have yet to get one that sent me clear to the other side near where I started out for example). Escort, killing, and gathering quests are all classic rpg fodder.

4. Quests that you didn't know were quests! Here is one that enough other games have its staying just a note of interest, but would otherwise be a positive: Quests that you were not given do exist, along with achievements. I will list here what one of them is but not how to do it avoid any accusations of spoilers: Frog statues which lead to 2 unique bosses, which each have an achievement when you kill them. There are others but again I won't give anything away so the special snowflakes among us won't cry.

Summary: Worth getting if you love these types of rpg games and want a challenge rather than the usual just hack and slash your way through. Time those pulls or you will become monster chow in abut 10 seconds or less. If you want a easy rpg with no real thought needed, give this one a pass. It is not meant for you.

Game difficulty scaling is so bad, if you want a casual run, you won't even get that from normal difficulty because you get mauled by droves and droves of enemies that all drop trash loot that doesn't increase your damage at all. The loot system is terrible because it feels like every upgrade in gear only upgrades your enemies with it. The voice acting and story is so terrible its not even laughable, it's just pathetic. I really tried with this game, but it's riddled with so many flaws that you can't look past them.

The inventory/perks/companion/... tabs are all terribly confusing, at the beginning of the game I didn't even know how many skills points I had because it was so small. They need to be reworked and just be a little clearer.

I appreciated controller support but swapping to different inventory slots is to sensitive, you either don't land on the tab you want or you just stay on the one you're on.

As the game is now, I cannot recommend this game because you probably won't be on it long enough to finish the game

Gameplay is half decent, but I can't reccomend this game. Even on medium difficulty, you get surrounded by enemy hordes that tear you to shreds within seconds and since they tend to completely surround you constantly you can't even run away. Healing spells and potions have a brutal cooldown so you can only die. FUN. Your own skills are weak, you have to babysit your (admittedly somewhat competent) companion on top of that. Another major annoyance: the characters talk to each other here and there which is perfectly fine, except half of those dialogues happen at the start or right in the middle of combat so you have to make the choise to either focus on the combat and ignore the talking or getting your ass handed to you on a silver platter. Loot is a bit unimaginative and aside from the weapons I couldn't tell any changes in armour visuals whatsoever. Not really a bad game, just an unbalanced and lackluster one.

Minimal build versatility for an ARPG. Characters are kind of locked into a build once you reach max level because the perks cannot be reset for choosing another build. Heroic difficulty requires an extensive amount of running back and forth kiting mobs. If you like min/maxing for this type of game the level of effort and time required to obtain optimal gear is considerable. The changes they made shortly after release back in 2013 severely handicapped players from obtaining sufficient power to survive the later modes of the game they released to improve replay-ability. I snagged the game for $1.50 on sale. I also bought VH2 and VH3 with the understanding that having all three would allow me to acquire the VH:FC, but that seems to be inaccurate.

The incredible adventures of Van Helsing has been an enjoyable experience but I reckon there are better alternatives out there so I would not recommend.

Pros:
Decent story (although many cheesy lines)
Interesting character development
A couple of interesting boss fights

Cons:
Repetitive battles
Fiddly UI controls
Minor bugs with a couple of major ones:
My melee weapon shortcuts kept resetting to default
Final boss battle froze after the boss had jumped and I timed stopped with the boss never landing back... Had to replay the whole thing.

It's very good for someone trying to learn how to play on a keyboard. Good story line, what can I say I read a lot of books that included Van Helsing. So now I play him. LOL. graphics are not like way up grade but I dont care, for the price they are great. Now if your into 60.00 games, this is not for you but this gal lives on a very limited budget......so the price is right.

Love it. Bought it Nov/Dec 2019 Sale for peanuts... turned out to be the best peanuts i ever spent!

i'm old. Ive been gaming a loooong time and ive seen it all before. The same old games over and over with different skins and renamed. i really am rather jaded by the whole scene. i find maybe 1 or 2 games a year that i really enjoy and dont get bored with after a couple of hours. This is one of them.
