First two episodes were already average slashers with shallow plot, but the gameplay was giving a lot of joy - well designed maps, enemies and difficulty balance. Van Helsing 3 is cutting every possible corner bringing the quality of the final product down. Producers decided to keep year-to-year release date and by changing the whole skill tree and multiplayer balance they didn't give the team time to work on single player campaign.
It can be felt on every step. I am not sure if the game has half the maps the previous games have, but levelling up two-three times per map feels a 'little bit' too fast, especially taking in consideration you won't spend much time on each of them. There is no grind here, but in a bad way of meaning - just not enough enemies to kill and places to visit. The only thing I liked about the maps was they came back to the basics - more nature and neutral places rather then going full steampunk.
Looking at the difficulty level, producers decided to change their target group to kids who start their journey with computer entertainment. Playing on Hard feels like Easy, I finished the game in permadeath mode on Hard without a problem, where you could easily die on Casual by letting your guard down in previous episodes.
Mobs are all made on one and same hoof. It feels like all of them are either based on mobs from previous games or made on the rush without imagination.
The skill tree has been reworked so now every class gets broken down to another two (six in total) and gets different set of abilities. I can't say a bad thing about it; now the tree looks more clear and it's kind of Diablo 2 to 3 progress. The difference is it doesn't really matter how do you grow your character since the game is so easy it basically going thru by itself, the skills are more about watching new animations.
And of course a nightmare for every completionist - broken achievements. Pigasus doesn't sell any items after the latest patch and one more multi cheevo won't pop up when it's done. Happily I stopped caring about them cheevos.
Sum up:
- If you already played Van Helsing 1 & 2, don't waste your time on this game,
- If you haven't, I wouldn't say it's a bad idea to get the Director's Cut Edition, but bare in mind you can only play Van Helsing in the first two.

Pro's: you get to continue the story of part 2
It looks a little better graphically.
cons:
The skills are reduced by 80%. instead of having 20+ skills and 15 tricks etc, you have barely 10 total now.
there's nothing new to the classes or the play style.
it's basically a van helsing 2 downgrade.

Mediocre finish to interesting series.
First Van Helsing was a quirky hack&slash with some great concepts about NPCs and the world it creates. Borgovia, Ink, vampires and all this gothic novel stuff, it simply worked. Jokes and some random events, which winked to players with cultural references made me laugh more than once and interested me enough to finish first installment and jump to the second.
And somewhere halfway the second Van Helsing it stopped. It was more and more repeatable, allusions were less and less funny, and I thought - ok, it's me, I got too much, and I need some time to get back to it.
When I returned to the series it appeared that i left 3h from the ending of the second game - it was that short. And it ended, with really obvious and dull everything.
And then came the third part.
One of the things I liked in these games was the ability to import my character and start another part, which in response became harder, to balance my character's skills and equipment. And they threw this idea aways in third game, forcing player to level up since level 1 using totally different ways, mechanics (which were quite nice), but threw away anything but the name of my character.
Amd the story - well, it became even more dull. Obvious villain is doing obvious villainy. But right now it didn't even bothered me, as the levels are not even logically connected - 90% of this part is played in Ink, so some sumpiness is obvious.
But your mission for the whole game looks like playing Mario with weapons - the princess is not yet here, you have to come further. And further. And a bit more. Just another one. No, the next. Oh, another portal, I wonder where it goes! And another.
I'm happy I ended it, but honestly the series could end with the first part, and the overall not would be much better.

Firstly the game is EXTREMELY SHORT! I'm a completist and even so I finished the game in about 12.5 hours completing all side quests in the process and unlocking nearly all of the hidden achievements.
The original game Van Helsing 1 has had some features bolted on to make Van Helsing 2 which did not, in my opinion, add to the game and rather detracted from it. Unfortunately these have mostly been retained in Van Helsing 3. They mostly require you to return to your lair every 10 minutes (or more frequently) to micro manage one thing or another. As anyone who has ever experienced a “micro manager” will know this is not a good thing!
The skills system has been simplified from that in the previous games. I know a lot of people hate this but I'm going to go out on a limb and say I actually prefer the new system.
Thankfully some things which needed to be fixed did get fixed. The difficulty issues that plagued Van Helsing 1 & 2 have been addressed. Previous games had a problem where by you just get surrounded by hordes and utterly annihilated, re-spawn and die almost instantly as the re-spawn is in the middle of the horde that just swamped you. Thankfully the monsters are less in number (but more in power) which avoids this swarm problem and the respawn points seem to be in more sensible positions.
Thankfully the Easter Eggs have also been toned down a bit. In Van Helsing 2 some of them are rather intrusive and “in your face” and actually distracted from the game for me. Thankfully they are not quite so blatant in this game.
A lot of reviews complain that this game is buggy and crashes to desktop. I'm playing on Windows 10 and didn't have any such issues but I did have a bit of trouble getting the thing to boot up the first time but it seemed okay after that. Be aware you get the loading screen and it then takes a LONG time for the game to actually start, a sort of “go and make yourself a cup of coffee” type long time and I drink filter coffee so don't assume the game has hung up, it really takes its time.
PLUS
1: General graphics: Quite nice but locked in a 4:3 screen format. Why, for a 2015 game, wide screen wasn't included I don't know.
2: Sound: Good, makes good use of a surround sound system.
3: Cheap: (NOTE: I got it with a hefty discount during a sale.)
4: Integrated with Steam: Comes with achievements and steam trading cards for those that like that sort of thing but if you are a keen achievement collector beware. There are a number of achievements linked to the multiplayer PvP game and that is all but dead making these achievements virtually impossible to obtain.
MINUS
1: Extremely Short: The whole game is only about 12.5 hours long and that is playing it as a completionist.
2: Plot: Uninspired.
3: Gameplay: Okay but uninspired. By the end it was getting very repetitive and this is a short game.
4: Lack of Tutorial / Instructions: There are a few on screen pointers at the start but most of the game is left completely unexplained. There is no instruction manual packaged with the game at all.
5: Poor character graphics: Apart from the weapons the character graphics have virtually no change depending on the items equipped which is disappointing.

From the 3 games, this was my favorite one.
The graphics were nice and I liked the whirlwind skill from the class I played.
Comparing to the other games: there are less monsters and the pace of the fighting is slower. There are also fewer skills and they depend on the class you play. However I preferred the combat on this van helsing game.
They did remove and change some features, like the shrines (temporary +% exp or damage) which I only found 2 of, throughout the whole game. You also no longer buy potions: you have 1 of each and reuse them after a cooldown period.
Lots of people complain about crashes but I only had 1.
The worst thing about this game, for me, was the graphical glitches that occured. I had to alt-tab when that happened in order to fix those. Also annoying was some quests that I failed because there was no info on which option was correct.
All in all, the game was worth the 1€ or 2€ I paid for it, and was my favorite one of the trilogy.

- I finished I (30 hours) it was something new but ok
- II it was an evolution of the first but ok too (20 hours)

But the third one is ridiculous.
In the first and second games, the basic attack was automatic.
When you click and hold with left mouse button, the character will attack using basic attack without interruption.
But in this third title, for each attack it is necessary a click.
It's ridiculous!
If you have 500,000 monsters to kill in the campaign, you will have to use 500,000 clicks.
There is no option to change the default attack form.
Neocore killed the game.
For free is expensive!

About 1/4 of the skills, sure there are more classes, but they don't add a lot.
If you are new to the series you may like it, if coming from previous versions you probably won't.

Bear in mind, you have to set all your steam profile setting to public, so that Neocore can read your inventory and discover that you own all three games, first.
I'll explain: I bought the first two games and enjoyed being able to carry my powerful character from the first to the second, no problem. When I got to the third, however, I found that my character was stuck back at level one thanks to the new character system. I further found out that this was fixed in the FINAL CUT game, with improved trees and that sort of thing. If you own all three games, you can get the final cut for free, though, which is what I've done rather than play game three at all.
It would have been better if you could carry your 'true' character over, but unfortunately not. This was all rather inconvenient, as this information wasn't in the game description.
