great and relaxing game
the only real bug was a fps drop in the elevator from the geist-tower, but the rest runs perfectly as any finished game should!

Content & Replay Value: It took me about 6 hours to finish The Gunk, taking extra time to explore, scan objects and unlock most upgrades. Given its linear content, replayability is very low: there’s no reason to do another run once completed.
Is it worth buying? Yeah, but not at the full price of 25$/€. The content offered is rather limited compared to the price and its quality: while decent, it doesn’t really warrant a purchase without discount. I recommend waiting for at least 25% off.

Verdict: Decent

Rating Chart Here
Competently-made and enjoyable as it may be, The Gunk often also feels generic and insipid both gameplay and story-wise. Not a bad game by any means, not great either: such middle ground may be passable for some, perhaps not good enough for the more demanding players.

In-Depth

Premise, Setting & Writing

A duo of space-faring adventurers, Rani and her friend Tara (?) (forgot her name already, that’s how unremarkable she was…), happened upon a seemingly untouched planet, ripe for exploration and all kinds of novel discoveries. Soon enough Rani, in charge of on–site operations, finds out about a strange substance quickly dubbed The Gunk, which seems to be siphoning energy from the planet’s ecosystem. With a half-wrecked ship in need of repairs and a mystery to solve, the duo, alongside the ship’s robotic cook, delves deeper into a planet that may not be so uninhabited… after all.

Despite verdant landscapes that contrast well with the poisoned, gray-scaled areas infested by the Gunk and competent art direction, this title falls flat on both narrative and character development. On one side you have a run-of-the-mill, stereotyped sci-fi trope recycled a million times before, one the other a main duo that never really stands out for neither personality nor charisma. The other characters found along the adventure are sideshows at best, even more unremarkable, with forgettable and uninspired dialogues. The story events, despite involving planet-wide consequences, never feel grandiose or epic at any point due to boring narration - it does the job, but nothing more than that.

Even if it’s a game that tries hard on story focus, that proves to be one of its weakest components: so much more could’ve been accomplished with the setting at hand.

General Gameplay

Playing as Rani, you’ll be tasked with exploring the planet to find out more about The Gunk’s origin, while also studying the ecology and properties of various locations. Mainly, you’ll be going through platforming sections that feature fixed or moving obstacles, simple jumping puzzles and of course, Gunk infestations that need clearing out, harmful to the touch and sometimes featuring hostile creatures (more on that later). For that purpose the Vacuum Glove is paramount, enabling you to absorb the foul substance, restoring each self-contained area’s ecology once all of the waste is gone.

This enables plants to regrow, unlocking both resources to acquire, that translate into upgrades for your hardware using the ship’s workbench, and research material that is used to unlock the upgrades themselves; the more new stuff you scan, the more craftable modules you’ll unlock. These range from utilities such as better vacuum range, to all-new tools like the Decoy used to distract enemies, or various upgrades to make your life easier in combat.

While each area contains some small side-areas with extra crafting materials or the odd “out of the beaten path” research article, the game’s level design is largely linear, subdivided in zones you can return to at any time via a convenient fast-travel system unlocked not too far into the story. There are no major secrets, side areas, worthwhile backtracking or anything else to discover: exploration proves limited in scope. From time to time you’ll be able to return to the ship, and engage in brief dialogues with the NPCs present there, that however provide nothing more than listless exchanges.

The main issue of the general gameplay loop, is that it never really evolves significantly from start to end: some variations happen and are welcome, however they never feel critical turning points. Also in this case, The Gunk feels unambitious, premature, not elaborated enough upon.

Combat System

The Gunk itself is an enemy on its own, at first stationary, then floating around and even actively trying to inglobate Rani and kill her. In addition, the mysterious phlegm also generates creatures hostile to you, ranging from small but still dangerous spawns, to massive, charging hulks that require a bit more strategy to defeat. Also here, the glove will be your primary weapon, enabling you to throw enemies into one another, eradicate fixed turrets and use environmental opportunities like explosive melons (yep, that’s a thing) to obliterate foes.

Enemy variety proves rather low, with just three foes, in addition to the Gunk itself, throughout the game - exceptions made for the final boss. Generally combat difficulty is on the lower side, same goes for exploration mishaps: death is inconsequential, respawning Rani near where she fell or at worst, at a close checkpoint from either a manual or auto-save. Later on the Glove may be upgraded with more tools like a distracting Decoy or a lethal plasma cannon that stuns and kills, however these don’t really feel needed: you’re already powerful enough as it is, nevermind with most upgrades done. Those seeking even a moderate amount of challenge won’t find it in this game.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2804674003

Puzzles

Mostly entail using environmental elements to unlock pathways. For instance, seeds can be thrown in special “energy pools” to make plants grow, then acting as platforms, or explosive plants thrown onto debris to clear a path. Some machinery like elevators, rotating platforms and energy conduits will also be present later on, but generally nothing complex, following an “activate once or twice” pattern at most. Even if you’re new to puzzles, you'll find the proposed enigmas simple enough - challenge and this game aren’t concepts that go along.

Developed by Image & Form Games, who previously presented us with the popular SteamWorld series, finally release The Gunk on Steam. A title already available on Microsoft's Game Pass, that surely deserves our attention. An untamed and colorful journey to find the truth about a lost alien civilization.

Rani and Beck are two space scavengers living by whatever job they can pull off while traversing the vast space. We play as Rani, a natural born explorer who always seeks to understand the truth, and is clearly fascinated by history. On the other hand, Beck does her best to keep the ship flying on a low and tight budget.

Their lives change forever after arriving at an unknown planet completely off the grid. Originally, they wanted to harvest the planet's energy, but as the game progresses, it's obvious there is something else at play here. Seems this long forgotten place has a rich architecture, and there's where the game really shines.

You'll uncover the planet's long lost history and understand the dilemma of its civilization. The story is far from complex or extremely intense, but suits quite well within the main narrative, and tests the friendship of the protagonists as new events arise. A simple, but at the same time emotional light journey, surrounded with beautiful exotic locations.

Interaction between Rani and Beck through the radio are smartly done, usually with bits of humor and elegantly put together. This delivers some insight on their individual past, while we learn more about their history together.

The Gunk delivers an exploring third person adventure where players will scan the environment with Rani's powerful arm tool, as well as clean up the gunk to reveal beautiful green sceneries, filled with vibrant vegetation and alien resources that once harvested, will allow you to install new upgrades. These consist of a powerful laser gun mod, running speed, increased health, and plenty more useful mods.

Gameplay wise, it's very simple but pleasant. Explore and complete minimalistic puzzles to unlock passage ways to proceed, while always gathering materials. Level design receives an easy A+ grade from me, with impressive geometry placement and really high fun value. There's even some really smart shortcuts to unlock. The game is not open world, but delivers some connected hub areas. There is a teleport system to quickly travel to the desired location, which is handy.

Traversing each area feels really good and some mechanics like using plants as bridges or stairs, are nice to see. Expect some little hidden secret paths and a few less seen areas with some neat loot as well. Overall the level design matches the colorful atmosphere, that blends particularly well in the whole Alien theme.

If by any chance you played The Gunk on Game Pass, you'll be happy to know this version seems to be updated. Motion Blur can now be removed through in-game option, and already scanned objects will display a red symbol, while not-scanned ones will appear green. This will help those aiming at full completion.

Unfortunately, some extra options are not available, such as Field of View, Chromatic Aberration, and others, that can only be activated or removed through config files. Check PCGamingWiki for extra help.
Which is a shame because the performance looks very solid, with constant 60fps with an RX 580, at 1080p. DX12 mode seems extremely well optimized, and that's always great news for AMD users.

Easily a game between 5 to 10 hours, if you're like Rani, a seeker of truth. Less if you aim only at the main goal. Regardless, The Gunk is an absolute blast, with impressive exotic visuals, an entertaining campaign and a smooth casual adventure. A relaxing take on the genre, with satisfyingly gameplay and plot.

You got served a pretty good game

I really liked The Gunk! It's not a long game by any means but thats definitely a good point. Dragging stories into infinity, placing unneccesary upgrade systems and rpg-light elements into games that don't need them seems to be the industry-standard these days. The Gunk doesn't do this.

Pacing, playtime, storytelling and character upgrades just feel right, and are more utility based than mandatory powerups for completing the game. I really like that.

All in all I hope the developers make another game and stick to their way of focussing on a fun experience rather than a dragged out one.

Completed in under 5 hours. Quickly realized this wasn't quite the game i thought it was going to be and thought about getting a refund after watching the trailer on youtube. However the graphics, sound and mechanics were enough to override that feeling.

I feel that this game is more of a walking simulator akin to Death Stranding and the like, an atmospheric storytelling engine where you uncover the truth of the planet you've landed on. The upgrades are useful, but there's only one i think you need, and the story forces you to get it. the scanning is more for a completionist vibe, the puzzles are the right level of difficulty for a game like this - nothing that will cause major issues, but the execution of them is quite nice.

All in all the pricing seems fair for the content provided, unfortunately there's no real replay-ability due to the linear nature of the story, but for a nice calm sojourn into a breathtaking environment with a solid story I'm glad i stuck with it. sad to see it end so soon.

No bugs found, only one area my PC struggled with (the long elevator) all in all a very smooth experience.

Buy it if you'd like to explore a beautiful planet and clean up all the Gunk™

This isn't a bad game by any stretch but it's quite basic.

From previous reviews I can see people have been comparing this to Journey to the savage planet. However, this really isn't true. They may share a similar theme but the gameplay is quite different. This is a simple, on rails platformer with mild puzzle elements.

The animations and some of the models are not the best. Strangely, the main character is poorly animated in cutscenes and their model looks like an unfinished playdough figure with sausage fingers and stick legs (I honestly thought she had prosthetic limbs for half the game).

The puzzles are rather simple and basic. I can't say there was any real complexity till possibly the end level. A lot of the puzzles just end up being; suck up the gunk and put the plant that springs up in the green puddle to get up that step you can't reach.

Combat, can't really say it exists. What few combat encounters exist are nothing more than a minor inconvenience. There are 3 enemies. Little critters that you just punt away, stationary plants that shoot fireballs at you but they serve more as a puzzle element than an enemy to be honest (you just navigate around them till you can reach and kill them to continue the level) and what i think was meant to be a mini boss (you're meant to lead it into rocks to stun it then attack its back. I literally just stood by a rock and it repeatedly headbutt the rock stunning it.

Platforming. Very basic, move and jump. Sometimes there's spinning platforms. The game very much railroads you as you can only jump very slightly. You can also only really jump in pre-designated spots (yellow markers). you'll come across a step for instance and despite it being perfectly level, you can only jump on the yellow section. You can also only stand on designated platform plants. while other things may look like you could land on them, you'll clip right through.

Exploration. You can scan some stuff but a majority of things you can't. The only point to scanning is to progress your upgrades. Not really any secret areas, every now and then there will be a slight fork in the path that immediately ends, that's your secret. There's no collectables or things like that in this game. You gather 4 resources from plants and rocks. Upgrades require you scanning things to slowly unlock them in a linear progression and then use the resources to buy them. There are 6 teleport points in the game. You can only upgrade your tool at the base camp. There's no reason really at all to ever back track. You don't unlock new tools that let you open new areas or find new secrets. This makes having to travel to basecamp every time you want to upgrade just an annoyance. Honestly the upgrades are just minor quality of life upgrades and you really don't need them. The upgrades that make you go faster are probably all you'll use. I'd like to say the combat upgrades are useful but combat is small, rare and over quickly.

I 100% complete the game in 4 hours. That's with no back tracking. When I thought I'd finally made it to mid game, it turned out I was more or less at the end. Story is a cool concept but not really fleshed out. I get the strong feeling more was planned but the devs ran out of time or money and rushed this game out. After rescuing a guy he mentions a north, east, south and west tower but you then just proceed right to the end game location.

While this may look like an adventure, open world exploration game where you collect resources and find upgrades to help you progress, it is not. It is a simple platformer with simple puzzles that you can finish in a few hours. I can't say it's got combat because it really doesn't exist enough for that.

At £20 and the effort it takes to make games these days, you can't really fault the devs on the price vs content. It's not always about play time. That said, I'd recommend you get this game on sale, at least 50% off, if you plan on playing it. It's something you'll likely 100% during casual play, there's no real replayability. It's a big step up for the developer whose previous games have been essentially old flash games. You can see a lot of effort went into this. Unfortunately at the end of the day, the game just falls a little bit flat. If you removed the language that occasionally happens, it could be a nice game to introduce younger gamers to the world of platforming.

I happened across this game by accident while scrolling through the upcoming releases.
It immediately piqued my interest because the production value looked pretty high.

I thought it was fun, engaging and the story was decent - a well done hero's journey.
I was surprised by the good level designs.

It seemed to have just enough challenge to be fun and interesting without leaving you bored or over challenged.

Some things I noticed;
- the attention to detail was really impressive. The interior of the ship was so incredibly well done it is really a shame that you don't get to do more in there. The calendar, t-shirts, posters, it looked lived in.
- I enjoyed the characters who seemed believable if not just a little stiff with the dialog sometimes but over all really good.
- I thought the character design was excellent and very detailed.
- You got served!

Things I wish they would have done;
- I wish you could scan more items even though it would have been all flavor text. it would have made exploration more enjoyable. Since there were only some things you could scan you quickly figured that out and kind of just ran along without bothering to explore much.
- More area's for exploration and discovery - I can see how too much of this might have resulted in players getting lost but - I'm an explorer so it's what I'm looking for.
- It would have been nice to have more fauna even if you didn't get to interact with them.
- I don't know if I found all the upgrades but - I wish there were more.
- Too short? I hate to sound cliche as I do see this complaint often but I only say it because I enjoyed the world I was exploring and wish there was a bit more to discover even if it was meaningless to the overall story.
- Just for fun I lowered all the graphics settings to minimum and it looks almost pixelated. Might have been a missed opportunity to toss in a retro pixel filter just for fun.
