It's a great game.

+ Grafik ist sehr schön
Graphics is also very pretty
- Flugsteuerung für Kämpfe gut, für Zeitrennen grauenhaft. Kollisionsabfrage ist bei engen Flugmanövern zu groß. Man eckt oft an.
Flight behavior in battles is fine, but in time trials its bad. Collision detecting is in narrow spaces to big. You collide often with things.
- In Deutsch, sind vereinzelte Sätze mit englischer Sprachausgabe
In German there are some not voice translated sentences
- Inventar und demzufolge Handel ist verwirrend

Seriously. This is a great game if you're looking for an interesting, chill, dogfighter/trader game set in a very intriguing setting. For me the game fills the same sort of niche as Sunless Skies, except quite a bit less heavy on the narrative and text. It's a great game to just run jobs for the various islands and explore the setting. The main story wants you to be invested in the political situation of the setting, which I recognize isn't for everyone. And on top of that: it doesn't really do a great job of easing you into the political situation, basically just thrusting it upon you from the get go with only a little background, so you have to be predisposed to enjoy that kind of drama. For example: In the first chapter you are working for one of the last independent islands, Dunkle, and the plot surrounds Dunkle's lease on an extremely valuable mining outpost not being renewed. You are very much sort of a side character in each life, subtly impacting things from the sidelines as things unfold and happen to the world around you.

The game's lore, art style, and environment are all outstandingly crafted and unique.
The gameplay is that of an aerial dog-fighting style using birds instead of planes.
It is challenging, and the controls have a learning curve which can be steep for someone like me who hasn't played this genre before.
However, after a couple of hours, I was pulling off some maneuvers which left me with a solid sense of accomplishment.
The resulting experience feels organic and incredibly satisfying to play.
The world-building is what sets this game apart. The concept is unique, yet quick to understand. The game is filled with things to discover, and the player can formulate their own theories of what is going on in the world, supported by bits of lore sprinkled throughout the story.
Falconeer is a truly enjoyable example of interactive art with compelling gameplay and mechanics.

and yes, you can remap the controls (to kb even), but I don't know what to bind each thing to, since I'm not used to this kind of game.
guess I'll dig up my controller...
EDIT: apparently there is a way to switch to predefined kb/m schemes somewhat easily, as the dev himself commented below. so, +1 for a responsive dev.
I'll be updating once I get to actually play the game, lol
EDIT2: okay, two hours in. getting used to the controller controls took a bit, but once you do, game actually plays quite nice...

I love Dogfight Games. I can say, even on a falcon it is fun.
There is much to discover in the world. The fighting feels good. The graphic style fits to the story. There are different upgrades for the birds, e.g. Weapons and mutagenes.
The game offers for several hours of fun and entertainment. I am excited which way it will continue.
The question of whether I recommend this game, I can now answer with yes. In particular, I recommend the developer.
Earlier version of the review
No matter how the game may be, the Game Guide for 3.99 euros is the same document as the Game Manual for 0,00 euros, so you pay for something that there is already free.
Update 2 after answer from the developer:
After the changes, I now only have the game manuals in all languages, but there is now no guide in the file directory!
Update 1 after answer from the developer:
I had matched the two documents (DE version) on my monitor (one right, one left), both had the same 11 pages, the Game Guide had no other topics! They had only different filenames!

I like this game. I like it quite a lot. It's not something that I really enjoyed right away, truthfully--but it grows on you. Give it some time, both to get used to the controls and to let the story start to really draw you in.
The atmosphere and music are very well done. The voice acting can be a bit uneven in terms of audio normalization--some had professional equipment, and I feel some had less so--but I like the delivery and variety of voices. Some of the help prompts could be a bit larger to stick out more for people like me who are so transfixed by the content that we can't figure out how to land for 30 minutes... but that's a minor quibble at best. I've learned to make sure I'm looking at the whole screen, for sure, and the more I play, the more I keep learning.
Very enjoyable!

so far i have nothing negative to report so thats a good thing :)
the animation style they used gives me mild sea of thieves vibes and that's really nice.

There are some rough edges (overall I find the game slightly too easy, I think. If you're a somewhat experienced gamer, you should go directly to the hardcore difficulty ) :
1. the economy is a bit off, I find it a bit too easy to get access to the best gear
2. some mechanics aren't explained / tutorialised, which means you have to refer yourself to the wiki or the discord chat.
3. The missions could do with a bit more variety, but that's something that's kind of specific to the dogfight genre I think.
4. There's a number of really cool ideas that are somewhat underexploited.
HOWEVER : the developer is extremely responsive, and the negative points I find do not reduce my enjoyment of the game. I was looking for something with great aesthetics and an engaging setting and got just that and more. There's a sense of bliss that comes with controlling these birds that's really satisfying, and the story is engaging enough to make me want to see more of it.

To preface, I don't usually like dogfighting games but I could not pass up on giant bird / dragon flying games and it looked so nice. For some things, I will suffer ( playfully, here ) through combat because it's worth it. I don't have to be the best at something to enjoy it and that's very much the case for this game.
It's just so much fun. I Installed it with the intent to just look at it, see what I might be getting into and immediately lost almost two hours in the game just flying around. Learning controls. Trying to fish - I am the worst fisher. It's just such a pretty, lovely game. This might accidentally turn into a bird flight sim for me. There are neat things to find, quests to take that aren't combat related, and I just enjoy it.
// So I've put about 7 more hours into the game since I reviewed it and I've jokingly called this a 'mini-skyrim'. I've spent so much time flying around, doing various quests - a lot of exploring, killing pirates, talking to people... I know there's a story quest, but I keep getting distracted! In a good way, mind.
I'm enjoying the game immensely. It can be a chill way to fly about or I can hunt around. Either way... I've only fallen in more love with it.

It took myself more then 6 hours to understand some of the basics and soon afterwards the more advanced tricks but sadly there are things that have to be learned on your own which can lead to several frustrating moments if your not prepared.
The story was the next thing on my complaint list. I didn't understood it at all at the start and it got me quite confused early on which lead to further frustration. Later the story had gotten much better and i started to understand what they did in the early stages of the game.
I found the game in the meantime acceptable but by no means is it a game which invents something new and ground breaking here! Considering that this game was made by a single person it's pretty amazing and nice to play casually. Besides i find it amazing to be capable of flying a giant falcon/warbird into battle, that feature alone is something i consider more of a unique thing to this game.
All in all...i like this game!
In addition, the developer of this game hasn't abandoned it yet and still continues to improve it to this date!

At the start it was kinda difficult to manage and adjust to flying and fighting, but doing some side quests really helped me get a handle on it. Whenever I got stuck on a story mission I just used that as an opportunity to explore and see what was around. I'm really glad that I stuck with it and got to see more parts of the world and learn about the factions and stories.
The game runs incredibly well on my computer with little to no loading time, super satisfying in those times where you're a little impatient. The fast travel they got going is buttery smooth and I'm where I wanna be instantly.
Very few minor bugs, any that I got weren't game breaking and didn't last.
They added a Pirate DLC before I bought the game, I just wrapped up the story and played some of it and it's a great time. Not sure if more DLCs are in the works, but this one is real fun and I like how it fleshes the world out a bit more.
I don't normally write reviews, so now I'm just gonna give some tips/pointers I guess?
-You can turn off the HUD by clicking the Right Analog stick down, I don't like having a mini map there all the time, so I just click it a couple times to remove it when I don't want it, the compass HUD is enough.
-Pyro Pots recharge when you land at a perch and not from storms like regular ammo.
-It was really difficult for me at around the mid point when I picked up a fast mount with low hp.
After dying a lot in a row I went exploring and found other birds I could get and that really helped me out of my death
loop I found myself in. If you're stuck, play side missions and try prepping more, you'll get through it
That's it really. I'm having a good time with it.

Pros:
- Plays great on KB+M with Flight Controls: WASD and Camera Controls: Mouse Control and Aim.
- Gorgeous aesthetic. The graphics may be a bit simplistic but they look really good. Environments and towns are great to look at.
- Decent voice acting.
- Decent enough storyline to keep you engaged. Not too long that it outstays its welcome either.
Cons (pretty minor):
- Physics is a bit wonky. The top-tier weapon, Mancer ArmCannon, bounces enemy capital airships clear across the map when used. Amusing, though. Less fun is when your shots explode in your face because collision is inaccurate or misleading.
- Not much is explained in game. You'll need to do some exploring and experimenting on your own. Although this may be a plus for some.
- Little variety in names. I must have seen two dozen SaladTree NPCs.
Might be a bit expensive at full price, but definitely pick this up at some point.

Great atmosphere, decent graphics and a nice, smallish open world to fly/glide around in.
The story is decent and the controls are relatively easy to get used to, especially for a guy like me that doesn't like to use a game pad for anything bar flying/racing/fighting games. (Which i don't play very much)
The game consists of several chapters, in which you begin with a basic bird, weaponry etc
You also level up your bird gathered from missions and earn coin in order to progress your bird each chapter. Don't get too attached though because you can and will lose some birds depending on the chapter you are starting.
Missions consist of your typical, fetch, assault, defend or escort (May be more later on i dunno)
But vary enough so that most battles do feel unique in some way or another.
If you die, you lose a little bit of gold (Possibly experience though i didn't notice when i died) and whatever upgraded ammo pots you had, but restart from the last checkpoint.
The dev is extremely nice and helpful.
I asked a question in the forums and about 5 mins later the dev responded personally with perfect advice.
The only 2 things I could possibly speak of in a negative manner is that $42 Au is maybe a tad too much. If it were say $30 Au, I believe that a lot more people would pick it up. But tbh if i paid $40 for this, so far i would feel that i am getting my moneys worth.
The second is that the voice acting is hilariously bad. But it really didn't bother me apart from 1 character. Mostly it just made me laugh and cringe.
Overall this is a very relaxing, beautiful & some times hectic game that I've really taken a liking to. Not to mention that it is kind of unique in it's own way.
Thumbs up mate. Well done.

The game actually looks quite good and it keeps getting free updates which is neat considering it's a solo dev project and just because of this I have to give a positive review since indie devs make or break because of wishlists and review and I hope that anyone who wants to add a negative review takes this into consideration!

The only issue I ran into while playing was the annoyance of trying to aim above or below you. Your bird naturally wants to fly level with the horizon, but that makes aiming up or down feel like a struggle against the bird. Which is great if you really want the feel that the bird you are riding has a mind of its own, but if you are hoping for a feeling of being in complete sync with the bird you won’t get that.

The Falconeer
[table]
????Overview
???? In The Falconeer – is an aerial combat game a bit like Panzer Dragoon. You fly a giant falcon around, shooting at other enemies in the sky, and sometimes in the sea, and sometimes on the land. And everything you do revolves around that core.
- ◼️ In The Falconeer But it's not an arcade game. It's not action all of the time. That's because a huge part of the game is flying around an open map, running various missions for various settlements dotted around a mostly sea-covered world. In each chapter, you'll call a different settlement home, and there will be a new main story to follow. But you can also take on contracts, on the side, to earn money. There are bounties, mail deliveries, base defenses - anything you might need a handy falconeer for. And you can accept contracts from your home settlement or abroad.
- ◼️ Foremost, Swooping across a crowded combat zone feels effortless, thanks to the excellent responsive controls. Making a flight-combat game that feels this smooth on a standard controller is an achievement all its own.
In game
???? You can purchase better guns and different types of ammo from merchants scattered across the ocean world. The varieties of ammo have different effects. Generally, the more expensive types do more damage, but the special effects they provide feel minimal.
Doing more damage is vital, so upgrading your weapon periodically is necessary as you advance. If you’re not careful about how you spend your splinters, you’ll find yourself out on a wing and a prayer.
◼️ games that encourage exploration, the danger of dying can positively create a sense of adventure. The problem in this game is when the player goes down for that big swan dive into the drink, they are punished by losing a fraction of their splinters, which deflates the enthusiasm for exploration. The Falconeer is autosave only, so players have to earn those splinters back on their own, extending the amount of grinding needed if they die too many times.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2365445287
????️ Gameplay
???? The Falconeer Gameplay entails taking on mandatory story missions and side missions, which seem to be procedurally generated. Or, if you wish, you’re free as a bird to fly about the world in search of your own adventures.
The Falconeer is one pretty bird. The spectrum of reddish and purple colors in a sunset’s reflection off the water is just about as breathtaking as sitting on the beach and watching one in real life but without the eye damage. The dual moons of the night are equally gorgeous, as is the shift to that green sea color before a storm rolls in. And the physics-defying Maw, which I can only describe as a “water valley,” is as majestic as it is terrifying.
- >
- ◼️ It’s a good thing when art forces its audience to sit and think about the bad things they’ve done.
◼️ There are also several stops at magnificently rendered sacred locations during missions (such as a raging volcano), with tidbits of mythology at each and small, esoteric pieces to the puzzle of this beautiful yet dangerous world.
❤️ PROS
+ The weather is gorgeous to look at.
+ combat is exhilarating when at its best.
+Controls Feel Good
+Large Scale Battles
+world is full of secrets to explore
❌ CONS
- Getting killed hurts more than it should, the story fails to engage between major events.
-bleak story
-Monotonous missions
-Combat lacks intensity
-Checkpoints are few and far between

I can't recommend this game due to it's inherent control flaws across all platforms, the buggy and insanely annoying menus, and the very poorly written and organized story that I assume is supposed to be seen through the eyes of many; all of whom we play as at some point.
The controls feel... just bad. On controller, aiming is insanely sensitive with no real way to turn it down. Flight stick felt okay, camera controls can't really be used with it (not like you should use the camera). Mouse and Keyboard, despite not being fully supported, genuinely gave me the best experience. The fact that the game claims to be optimized for controller and flight stick but felt infinitely more stable and smooth using a mouse and keyboard doesn't sit well with me, almost making me feel like the dev's were too lazy to really make sure the game controls well at all. The camera and lock-on cameras are awful, snapping your neck to whichever side you want to look rather than it being analog for free movement, and the lock-on will force your bird to dive no matter what, making you fight the camera for control over your bird.
The menus. Why do I have to hover my mouse cursor over a specific pixel an inch away from the actual text box in order to select certain menu options, but only sometimes? The actual selection itself feel super jittery and the sharpness of the menuing actions completely break you out of the intended smooth nature of the game, and this is coming from someone who has played BDO and PSO2 which is menu hell.
The story and voice acting feel effortless and bland. Everything being narrated through nonsensical rhyming and riddle makes it hard to actually know what the important bits are. NPC's don't talk enough, and when they do it's usually one of two or three voicelines their NPC type has.
I really want to love this game. It looks amazing, the concept is amazing, and the gameplay has insane potential. All that needs to happen is the dev's have to figure out if this is an arcade or simulation flying game. Right now, they're dropping the ball on both. I'm going to keep coming back to the game on periodic fixes in hopes that things get better and a sense of direction is established.

or: A fantasy freelancer-like game with falcons instead of spaceships
I really enjoyed the world in the beautiful comic like graphics, it's just too bad, that it's actually pretty empty. The regions that are not just water are really enjoyable (you can see some of them in the screens on th shop site) everything in between was just so empty.
In my 10 hours playthrough (normal difficulty) I never had the actual need to rise higher than the flying height of the airships in game (that's not pretty high). Most of the gameplay is just bound so close to the ground/sea, you don't need to fly super high. If you do though, the only thing you can find are jet streams that speed you up for a short time. Getting up there often takes more time than just flying straight forward (the speed bonus is negligible if you count in the time you need to get up that high). I wished there was more gameplay in bigger heigths.
While a story of espionage, sabotage and war unfolds through the chapters and is somewhat enjoyable, the conclusion was somewhat anticlimactic. While there's some interesting developments going on in chapters 3 and 4 all the builtup is not used in the last few missions of chapter 5 at all. The lore is mainly told though some kind of prophecies/writings on shrines you can visit, unfortunately most of them are written in a such mystic way, that it's hard to get your hands on the lore at all. I'd so loved to learn more about the world, the life in this world, and the discoveries made in the later chapters ...
Many of the story missions involve escorting ships that are just slightly faster than the falcons slowest flying speed. While this wouldn't be an issue if there was just a handful of these missions, there's just so many of em. Give me fight's like the one in the last mission of chapter 1. There's also some kind of stealth mechanic in the game but it is neglected until the very last 2 missions of the whole story. I wish some of the gameplay mechanics were explained a bit better in game (e.g. give weapons more readable stats than stars, give an option to show numbers instead of bars when it comes to pilot/falcon stats)
This review may sound harsher than it's meant to sound. I enjoyed the game and I'd love to love it, but can't because of the reasons given above. The pricing is fair (I rushed through the story as soon as i got a weapon with max star rating), but I don't recommend getting the game guide in its current form, as it's not having enough content (lore!!!) to justify another 4€ spent. The soundtrack on the other hand is superb and totally worth the money!
For some reason I had to think of the space game freelancer the whole time. While the scenario may be totally different, the core gameplay with it's progression system and the missions just felt so similar.

The Falconeer is the title presented by the mind of Tomas Sala, who as a solo dev, has created his story around aerial combat and a fantastic world overwhelmed by the immensity of the ocean and breathtaking skies.
The adventure follows the world of “The Great Ursee”, full of small archipelagos, mountains, and maritime chasms, mirrored all around the corner. This title is also marked by a story with many intrigues, in the style of Game of Thrones.
The player wears the skin of a Falconeer, a pilot who holds the reins of a huge bird where his main objective is to perform tasks for several island nations, in a partially open world. As the name shows, the biggest part of the game involves driving the bird itself, in order to fulfill a certain objective. Of course, things are not so linear, as it involves combat mechanics against enemy factions.
The controls are accessible and quite simple, but there is a learning curve that will accompany the player throughout his missions. At your disposal, the player has the attack button and the possibility to perform defense maneuvers, more precisely the possibility to dodge enemy attacks. In addition to this action, which after a while can become a bit monotonous, there is also the possibility of picking up floating bombs and printing damage to enemy boats. These are the two main types of enemies, boats, aircraft, and other Falconeers.
That said, its gameplay becomes super repetitive over time, but what drives the player to continue his adventure is really his story. This title attempts to demonstrate all sides of the barricade, as it places the player himself as an agent of change on opposite sides of the conflict. A little confusing, but in fact, the game changes its perspective as you dive into its lines of thought. There are a lot of soldiers coming from different islands with different cultures, which enriches their entire environment.
There are two types of missions, the main ones that accompany the narrative and the secondary ones that are mostly designed to collect money. It is interesting to make improvements to the warbird, with descriptions that are really little seen. It is possible to use mutagenic items to improve certain aspects, giving access to passive effects that can, for example, improve its ability to fly, or make the bird itself in a state of permanent fear.
Unfortunately, the checkpoint system in this title can make things quite frustrating. The missions usually last a long time, since they have several stages. The problem is that even with the difficulty of the game in normal, our bird is very fragile and it is very easy to lose the notion of life bar when our concern is to knock down all enemies and not crush against rocks or even enemy ships.
Although the whole environment is stupidly well brushed, most of it is practically empty. Yes, it has brilliant sunsets, water effects, and very good clouds, but that’s it.
The soundtrack captures perfectly the lonely feeling of an approaching storm.
In short, The Falconeer will have a hard time trying to please all the players, but thinking that this title was produced by just one person it gives a whole other taste to take our own bird and break the winds and tides.

Now, I've tried playing the game with both controller and keyboard+mouse, and I still feel like the controls here are lacking and awkward. It's not as easy to navigate on a warbird in this game than say a spaceship in Everspace. Ended up opting for the keyboard and mouse since that's the one I'm most familiar with.
The Falconeer has some issues too like cross hairs just disappearing during dogfights, making me a sitting duck basically, or that stamina doesn't seem to regenerate fast enough, especially when you want to quickly cover huge distances. It's very hard to aim in this game too. I've struggled a bit in Everspace but at least I'm hitting something most of the time. In this game though, I'm barely making any hits.
With that being said, the game has plenty of good stuff going for it - It has a huge open ocean world with some interesting POIs and natural occurrences like waterspouts and thunderstorms that you are free to explore; lots seemingly randomly-generated quests to farm money from (besides the chapter-based story quests); well-varied though somewhat limited weapon and warbird upgrades to buy; and if you've completed the necessary prerequisites, you can even buy yourself a new and better warbird.
**Adding that I sometimes get motion sickness from playing certain games - I'm looking at you Mirror's Edge - but I'm happy to say that this isn't the case in The Falconeer. Hope this helps!
Overall
After giving the game a shot, I'm convinced that this game isn't for me. Flying my warbird during combat just feels like I'm struggling - futilely I might add - against the game, and perhaps the game just has a higher skill ceiling that I can't reach at the moment and I just don't have to patience to sit through hours of trial and error just to get the hang of its dogfights.
However, if you're a veteran space sim player, I reckon this game might pique your interest. It's not space-themed but it's still a game with some pretty intriguing world-building and beautiful graphics. Might be worth a look.

Props for the artistic achievement, but the ergonomics are lacking, and that's what matters most in a game. Is it fun to play? Does it handle intuitively? Are the controls fighting me? No, no and yes.

Update
After my original review (below), I received a response from the developer with a few pointers and suggestions for playing The Falconeer. Out of respect and appreciation for the effort made to reply to me, and as I have seen, many others, I felt I should give the game another chance, taking into account what had been said. It turned out to be worth it too!
I spent quite a bit of time initially tweaking and fine-tuning the settings and controls. This time I stuck to what I know. I ignored the recommendation for a controller and went with the mouse and keyboard. There were more built-in control options than I had realised, including a few different options for mouse and keyboard. After taking the suggestion from the dev, I set the controls to “mouse control and aim”. I also altered a several of the key-binds, played around the sensitivity and changed the difficulty to easy. With there being such varied choices, it would probably be useful to force players to choose their preference upon starting the game/prologue. While I still wasn’t particularly comfortable with the controls, they were much better than what I had experienced previously, and after a couple more hours of playing, it began to feel more natural.
I also took the advice of buying speed and agility mutagens at the start of chapter 1, instead of the better weapon that I previously went for. There was a definite improvement when it came to flying, both in and out of combat! The initial battles and missions were still more difficult than taking over a fort, so I think it could still benefit from some adjustments to balance that out, but the game was certainly more enjoyable this time around. As the game progressed, I levelled up, and bought better mutagens and birds, there was a huge difference, and battles became much more active and fun, although they started to become too easy on the easy difficulty compared to the initial battles, but I chalk that up to me having gotten used to the controls and enemy movements by that point.
Again, I went with the advice given and mainly focussed on the story missions. This generally goes against my nature as I like to explore and experience side missions from the start, but I went back to those later in the game instead. The story turned out to be pretty great and worthwhile! I explored and discovered all locations, including completing the races. The races were both fun and infuriating (my fault).
While my experience was greatly improved by heeding the advice of the developer, that’s not something that should be required. The game would benefit from making players more aware of certain aspects, perhaps by forcing them to choose their preferred difficulty and controls upon starting the game/prologue and including the upgrade system in the tutorial. I was ready to put The Falconeer back on the shelf due to how painfully slow it was, and from what I’ve seen, it’s been an issue for others too, so addressing it would likely help retain some players and allow them to experience the rest of the game, where it actually blossoms into something pretty great.
With these points in mind, and having enjoyed this playthrough after heeding the advice of the developer, I’ve altered my rating/recommendation. I really enjoyed the game once I got into it, and I truly hope changes are made to make certain aspects clearer and the start of the first chapter more bearable for users. I almost missed out on, what turned out to be, a decent game because of that, and I’d hate to think others are too!
Original Review
The Falconeer looks like a beautiful, interesting and fun game from videos and images on Steam. The world looked open and rather stunning, the flying looked graceful both in and out of battle, and the battles looked like great aerial combat fun! Unfortunately, once I had played a little, I realised this is one of those games that looks better than it actually is.
First of all, it says on Steam that a “Microsoft Xbox Controller for Windows® (or equivalent) is recommended”. This is echoed in a brief message when opening the game. What that actually means is you need a controller. I found The Falconeer unplayable with a mouse and keyboard. That was fine though. I would have changed to a controller anyway simply because it’s what the developers recommend for the best experience.
I played through the prologue/tutorial first, to learn the basics. I wouldn’t say the controls or instructions were hugely intuitive, but they weren’t terrible either. After some practice, I felt I was getting the hang of things. Unfortunately, I had to repeat various parts of the tutorial over and over because if you do something wrong and fail, you start from the very beginning, rather than before the stage you failed on. This became pretty boring, but at least it meant I started the rest of the game feeling more capable. Not that the feeling lasted very long.
You get to select between characters to play as, although I don’t really know if it has much impact on anything. The selection menus didn’t provide a great deal of information. Once in the game, the options aren’t much clearer either. Not a big deal though. I’m a little tired of hand-holding in games anyway and I quite enjoy finding things out for myself. I soon found the shop in the starting location and did a couple of side-quests/missions before going with what I imagine was the main quest.
The world is really beautiful, I can’t deny that. It’s a shame the flight speed, at least to begin with, is painfully slow. Most of my time was spent flying over the ocean with little to do. I found myself bored and zoning out, not realising the wind had blown me off course, leaving me flying in the wrong direction and resulting in more boring flight time to get back on course. There are occasional storms, wind pockets and wind streams that help make things a little more interesting, but not enough to make it fun or appealing. Even with the missions, there’s just too much time spent flying over an empty world.
I did a fair amount of exploring and a few side-quests, dying multiple times on even the most basic of tasks. I would generally put this down to me being a terrible gamer, but then I went and took over a base for the Imperium with ease, and I don’t imagine taking over a base should be easier than taking down one pirate. It makes me feel like there’s a lot of balancing to be done for the game to feel and flow better than it currently does. The combat feels somewhat similar to that of War Thunder’s aerial combat, but nowhere near as fun, action-packed, or balanced. Now I’ve seen both birds and planes fly, and while you can do some impressive manoeuvres in planes, I don’t think I’ve ever thought of a plane being more agile or manoeuvrable than a bird, but that’s what I see when I compare The Falconeer to War Thunder. Even if I wasn’t making a comparison, the combat in The Falconeer still seems too limited and imbalanced. Flying a warbird should be much more free and fun than it is.
I would generally play a large portion of a game, or ideally complete it, prior to reviewing it, but I can’t see me playing The Falconeer again unless there are some big changes to the game. It may be that it improves later in the game, but I couldn’t put myself through the pain and boredom to make it that far. It’s a stunning world with great potential, but as it stands, I feel it should be in early access at best and with a smaller price tag. Considering it was mainly one person who created The Falconeer (as far as I’m aware), it’s a really great piece of work, but I can’t recommend it as a game.

It's hosts a mystical world full of Naval Battles, Sea Monsters, Sky Pirates, and Giant Birds, armed with Lighting Cannons.
It's a full open world.
It's a beautiful game that will run at 120fps on basically a potato.
It's challenging, fun, and not quite like anything else out there.
It's an incredible, unique thought-form, realized by a visionary solo developer.
It's an amazing game.

What I find most enjoyable about it is it's open world game play and it's non-linear story, It makes you feel far more in control of your in game actions and decisions, had a few games where they constantly handhold the player right up to the end of the game, this one doesn't. It lets you figure out how to play it (although it kinda threw me into the deep end but experiencing the game a but more helps a lot)
Overall, I'm glad that I waited for this game, It's been worth the wait :)

This game is a fantasy-style reimagination of classical retro WW1 aerial combat shooters. Dive-bombing ships and intense dogfights just like back in the days, before twin stick shooters. Easy to learn, hard to master. It is amazing, what one man achieved just by programming hard. Solid graphics, tight controls and a seemingly deep background story. This one is good, not just by the standards of indie games. If it weren't for the voice-over storytelling, it would be comparable to gems like Panzer Dragoon (which didn't have that), especially if you switch the CAMERA SETTING TO MOUSE CONTROL AND AIM. Those who complain that it doesn't play like modern games don't know what retro nostalgia is like.
After a relaxing stroll over open waters, you ride your warbird through a stormcloud before crushing some pirates while listening to a marvelous soundtrack. Then you dive into the seas to grab massive bombs, which you throw at their ships. You return into the stormclouds in order to recharge your weapon. Afterwards, you're sad because the battle could have lasted longer, no matter how long it took.
If this game has a downside, it's that it's hard to let go of.

Summary:
The problem with the Falconeer from the get go is that is shows its small team size, not in the technical aspects of gameplay or the graphical nature, but in the design nature of the gameplay. The game is not designed to be friendly to new players, and what it causes is a mound of frustration that makes you question everything at every turn. It's a steep learning curve that will kill you easily in unfair ways, or cause you to get confused with the really off the wall quest/level design and the lack of basic quality of game elements like checkpoints. The sad reality is that while I really wanted to see what more the game has to offer in the depth of aerial combat and the world building the game may have, I couldn't get over the significant bugs that I ran into and the frustration of having to sit through elements over and over again because the game didn't teach me that an item could be destroyed or that you can't interact with X , Y, or Z in the way that it wants you to.
I mean, what's here is a reasonable technical treat that does reasonably performance wise, and there's realistic physics and motion at play that I could see really making combat, despite being really janky early on, possibly fun as hell down the line. Granted, your bird early on moves like a pig in slop and enemies will easily cause you to bash your head against the wall, but I can see the potential. Storytelling.....yeah storytelling is a little bit too lore intensive without really introducing you to anything, but the world made is interesting enough that you'd want to see more of it.
But this feels like someone didn't stop to think of whether not a player may know what they are doing going into the game. It's easy to get confused on where to go, what to do, how to start quests, and bugs will cause you to really start to curse things when you can't pick up the item that the mission wants. The game doesn't subtlely direct you in any sort of way, and that's a huge problem when you keep on running into stopper after stopper. It doesn't help that with no checkpoint system at times, you'll have to fly around to the same places and do the same story things over and over again to just get the one element that you failed on.
It feels like a game that if reshuffled around, could be good, but I can't recommend at this price and with the problems.

Lists:
Positives:
- An open world that looks good and does have interesting elements to explore.
- The combat and flying seems to have potential that I never got to and could be the aerial combat that someone might love.
- “realism” in physics and waves for example do well to show the potential and the level of detail the game has.
- It's got its own style that's sorta janky but in the same breathe does feel endearing.
- Some reasonable options to help refine the gameplay.
- Great performance
- Photo mode is a big plus.
Negatives:
- Absolutely no direction, not even subtle direction, on what to do and assumes that you know what to do next. No guiding quests at the start to give you an idea of what to do either.
- Buggy. A quest glitched out on me to the point where it made me question if the controls I was doing was wrong, and it made me question everything about the game going forward.
- Design hasn't been refined to really take advantage of the player and what they MAY do, causing repeated attempts and harsh lessons that a player really won't want to learn.
- Frustration through the roof. Select the wrong mission and you'll be put into areas that will absolutely annihilate you, and sometimes you can get hit with half your health with no fault of your own. Goes away with stat boosts but man, it's a tall hill to climb.
- Repetition of having to do story quest elements repeatedly will take their toll when you fail at one part, then have to do parts that don't really have a failure state, but take up time none the less.
- Confusing UI markers at times that can really make you wonder what the games trying to tell you, and in-game menus for quests and character selection aren't intuitive at all.

Pros:
-Gorgeous graphics
-Gamepad controls are smooth and responsive
-Open world is truly open
-Campaign grabs you and missions are short early on, which keeps the plot and action moving
-Deep lore/factions/systems/story, all of which means there's something new to see/do/learn pretty much everywhere you go.
-Interesting relationship with falcons (mutagens aren't exactly healthy for the birds, creating a moral ambiguity that I hope the game explores as I progress)
-Engaging sound effects/music and really strong voice acting (and LOTS of it)!
Cons:
-Combat could offer more variety, but to be fair I haven't seen a ton of the game yet, and there are lots of weapon types I can't afford yet, not to mention different ammo
-Camera can be a tiny bit finicky, but that's really nitpicking
-Controls with keyboard/mouse are not great, but I knew that going in, and this type of game doesn't lend itself to kb/m anyway in my opinion, so this is nitpicking
Overall, so far, I'm super satisfied with this purchase. This game scratches an itch I can't get anywhere else right now. It's like aerial exploration in old-school WoW with flying mounts combined with aerial dog fights that remind me of Divinity 2: Director's Cut, but it's even better than the sum of those parts. And to think this was designed essentially by one person? Amazing/much respect! I fully expect this game to be lovingly cared for by the developer, and any minor nits I've noticed so far will almost certainly be updated (especially if the developer's past track record with mods is anything to go by). I'm happy with my purchase and thrilled to support this developer.

Mostly because Tomas is a cool fuckin dude ;)
but also because as 1 person, this game is more polished and fun to play that the vast majority of AAA titles, and this guy deserves support.
I can't see anyone being disappointed, and I can't even begin to fathom what this guy could produce with a team and some funding :).
Great art style, excellent combat (a bit of a learning curve with controls, but once you get onto it, the aerial combat is cool and fun), fleshed out lore and story, LOVING this game thus far.
Support this game! We need more devs like this in gaming.
I may update my review when I get the chance to play some more, a lot of my impressions come from the beta, but I can't imagine anything has gotten worse since then, and the game was incredible in the beta phase.

Takeaways (why thumbs down):
- controller is an absolute MUST to play this game
- very poor PC port, controls non-existent for M&K (mouse is particularly glitchy)
- once you've played ~30 mins, you've seen most of what the game has to offer
- open world feels lifeless and barren
- combat feels non-visceral - dry and without impact
I was very excited about this game, hoping it would scratch my dogfight itch, and it unfortunately did not meet my *personal* 'playable' standard. I think the game has absolutely incredible potential, and I am floored that a single dev managed to put this together (mad respect), however as it currently stands it plays more like a proof of concept (or perhaps a mobile dogfight title) than a complete game. We know the dev's track record with mods, and per my verdict, I advise waiting until the game is improved and given true life.
I would just like to add that my review should in no way prevent you from trying the Falconeer if you are interested. There is more than enough 'demo' time prior to refund to determine whether it is your cup of tea, so give it a shot!

Please read. Originally I gave this game a thumbs down. However, due to the very quick and amazing effort from the singular developer in improving this game and fixing the number 1 issue with it. I am now giving it a thumbs up. It is NOT perfect. But it is a really nice little game.
In all honestly this game has a lot going for it at an affordable price. It doesn't miss many beats in the development department. It just has a few minor negatives and then for me personally a really big negative which they have since release fixed so...yeah...
So please read in case you missed some important info in your other reviews or the steam page.
The view in the game isn't all that magical and great like I thought it would be. It's mostly bland, boring environments that you're flying around in. And the overall plot-line and direction is lacking. But besides those two minor inconveniences and with the mouse controls more or less fixed, I think its actually a decent little game.

Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. |
---|
Above the clouds, freedom must be boundless... or not, as The Falconeer shows us. Our falcon makes it only just above the clouds. Most of the time we fly either very close to the ground or at cloud height, but not much higher. That makes sense, because it's damn cold up there and the oxygen is a bit scarce.
In the game we take on the role of a hawk rider, a warrior of the air, who glides across the water on his huge war bird and fulfills missions. The oversized falcon is equipped with a forward firing lightning rod. With his grabbing feet he can pick up and transport things from the ground.
The Falconeer is set in a world that consists largely of water (the Ursee). On rocks rising out of the Ursee are small villages or monuments. Warships and merchant ships sail over the water, airships and hot-air balloons fly in the air. Huge fish jump majestically out of the water, rocks rise from the sea whipped up by the wind, a lightning flashes above us in the sky - and we fly with our bird just above the water surface. The Empire rules over the Ursee, with the Empress at its head. However, there are also other rival factions, such as the powerful Mancer Order or the House of Borgia. As a player, you can explore the entire map at any time and fly around as you please. It's fun to just sit on your falcon and fly around and admire the different places. A special feature is the so-called gorge, a large valley in the middle of the sea, on the sides of which the water stands as if held by a ghost's hand, releasing the seabed and on the edge of which there are settlements and huge monuments. In the course of the game you can also explore the underwater world. Basically the game is played on the back of a flying animal. At some places you can land, but this only takes you to a menu and you can choose between more or less options - to fly again afterwards. To move around on foot is not possible.
From the beginning of the game, the first four campaigns are unlocked, you can switch between them at any time. A fifth campaign must first be unlocked. At the beginning of each campaign you choose your character for the respective campaign and thus your appearance and character values. However, and this is somehow strange, you take the money and inventory from the other campaigns already (partially) played, as well as the locations revealed on the world map (in other campaigns). Somehow this makes no sense. The campaigns build on each other in time, so it's impossible to understand the story by jumping back and forth. I don't quite understand this design decision.
The first campaign begins in the run-down little smuggler village of Dunkle, which is located on a small rock in the middle of the Ursee, on the edge of the empire's sphere of influence. We play a young mercenary (and his war bird) who offers his services to the highest bidder; or at least to the one who pays anything at all. Currently, this is mainly the scribe of Dunkle, who sends us on various missions for the small village. The missions are initially simple and short. We are sent on patrol, have to transport important freight, go on escort missions, find missing buoys, fight pirates and then return to Dunkle to get our payment. The story is mainly told during the (very) short briefings before and after each mission. In the second chapter you play on the side of the Empire, in the third chapter for the House of Borgia and in the fourth chapter for the Mancer Order. In many of these missions you don't fly alone, but have an ally at your side.
Besides the story missions we can also visit a merchant to improve our war bird. By injecting a mutagen, its mobility, speed or stamina can be increased and in some places blessings can be purchased. With enough money you can also buy a better lightning thrower or other weapons. Trading licenses can also be purchased from the trader. Besides the trader, you can also regularly meet people who offer additional missions, which do not advance the story, but can be quite lucrative. It is also possible at any time to simply fly around freely. The game saves after completion of each mission. If you die, you will be transferred back to the start of the respective mission.
Our war bird moves at a steady speed through the air with almost no effort. Only when we fly upwards does he have to exert himself a little, the steeper we want to go up, the more. We can also encourage him to fly as fast as possible over short distances, but this uses up his stamina very quickly. In descending flight his endurance increases again. If he has enough stamina, we can also perform acrobatic rolls to the left or right, which is very useful to avoid enemy projectiles. The weather has comparatively little effect, but gusts of wind always influence our direction, so we have to be careful to stay on course. Upwinds and downwinds cause us to suddenly gain or lose height.
The aerial fights with the many enemies take place like already in WW I - the birds circle each other and try to shoot down the opponent from short distance. Our flash cannon sets enemy birds or other (animal or mechanical) flying objects on fire, which is graphically beautifully depicted. The most advantageous position in battle is of course to be above your enemies. Then you are able to fly down on them with increased speed and quickly escape from the range of their weapons again, if they have survived the attack. Most of the time, however, you will spend circling your enemies and trying to get them in your crosshairs.
Conclusion:
The Falconeer is a good-looking action game in an open world and consists mainly of dogfights - exciting, fast-paced aerial battles in a confined space. By completing a variety of different missions, the story of the rival factions of the Ursee is told in a world full of mysterious technologies, ancient relics, gigantic monuments and legendary mythical creatures. Or it would be, if the game doesn't crash. I'd wait for a few patches before buying.
