It lets you harpoon men through the throat with uprooted road signs.
Its more cartoony visuals and general mood don't hit as well as the starkness of the original, but as an action game that doesn't wear out its welcome or waste the player's time you can do a lot worse.

This one is more heavily based off the comics. Sadly the comics ended the same year this game came out. But they are still planning to relaunch the thing. I imagine this is what is holding up the sequel/ remaster with dlc.
main game - great. 10/10. requires vysync being turned on. Rather short campaign, but also a lot of replayability. Cutscene at the end makes you hope there will be a sequel.
Vendettas campaign - not that great. missions extremely short (beat the majority of the thing in less than 1 hour on thug difficulty solo) hitlist missions require multiplayer and not sure if anyone is playing. One of the levels is nothing but light, which glitches out the graphics making you gun turn invisible. Sometimes, for no reason at all cannot run.

The game is good and can be considered a sort of a cult classic. The superpowers we are so used to get automatically while playing a game (immortality as we can just try levels again, regenerating health, ability to take bullets without flinching) are explained by canonical reasons. The delivery of most lines is good and there is a certain character that makes finding the collectibles all worth it: his fun narration of what every single Relic is is masterful.
While your character is a powerhouse, he's not against slouches and the game was a challenging experience, more so because you can get punished by killing your opponents in the simplest or easiest ways while if you go for flashy or risky maneuvers you can get more powerful if you don't mind having to retry a few times more while you learn the limits of where you can take cockiness to.
The story is good, since the source material that is based on is well-written, no surprise there; the portrayal of it is what is wonderful. You have this incredible power, but they can accurately portray it as a double-edged sword, a curse that is so deceitful that even when it tries to help you have no idea if it's merely playing you or screwing you over. I loved that kind of trip and mental games it made me go through.
The campaign is alright, but it also has a co-op mode where you can take completely different characters with unique powers each - talk about going the extra mile - for completing challenging levels that sort of explain what was happening on the background of the story while Jackie, the main character, went on his usual rampages. Some more milage for the game if you want to take it; all in all, it's a bit on the shorter side but not so much that you wouldn't feel it's worth it. Again, I hoped there were more entries of The Darkness, either the first game or even a continuation of this one as the ending is... very open for one.

❌ - Controls can be clunky;
❌ - Crazy scripted;
❌ - The stylized graphics didn't age well.
✔️ - Decent story / Voice acting / Sound design;
✔️ - The shooting and game mechanics are fun;
✔️ - The presentation is top-notch;
✔️ - Pretty easy to 100% (~10h).
A perfect representation of what an Xbox 360 / Playstation 3 era game felt like.

Audio/graphics are ok for 9 year old game.
Story is surprisingly quite ok for that kind of game and nicely narrated - I've enjoyed it.
Game is quite short (3-4 hours) but I think if you like FPS/a bit of RPG games you will like it.
Vendetta missions are also nice addition filling up some story gaps from main campaign.
Overall verdict 7/10

A standout entry in Digital Extremes' catalog, The Darkness 2 has great gunplay, a reasonably compelling plot (even for those unfamiliar with the comics or the first entry, The Darkness).
The moment to moment gameplay is engaging and challenging, the players powers allowing for the ebb and flow of difficulty and catharsis in gameplay.
Certainly worth a playthrough even 9+ years after it's release.

A dark, badass, a little over the top, and underappreciated FPS!
Meet Jackie Estacado!
You are Jackie, a mobster boss. He has a dark power known as The Darkness, which he has suppressed for years. When he is attacked in the first chapter by another criminal organisation, in order to survive he has to tap from The Darkness again! Fuelled by this power, Jackie retaliates, while coping with The Darkness in his mind.
The Darkness manifests for Jackie as two tentacles with a snake head growing from his shoulders. These tentacles can slash, grab objects/persons, brutally execute people in a variety of ways, and eat hearts to restore life. They can also spew a swarm of locusts that stuns enemies. There are a few other abilities, in summation: plenty of cool stuff! Darkness powers don't work while standing in a light. Furthermore Jackies sight goes black and white, with an increasing beep in his ear.
The story progresses linear, and is around six hours long. Fairly short, but there is:
Vendettas & Hit Lists
The Vendetta campaign can be played cooperative up to four players, but can also be played solo. It has much less body than the main campaign, but it's a fun bonus if you hadn't had enough of playing with the darkness!
This time we're one of four good guys. All of them very flamboyant and loud. They harness The Darkness inside a weapon, specifically a katana, a hatchet, an ancient pistol and a voodoo staff. What makes them mostly interesting is the way they interact with the enemies. The special powers that they wield isn't as powerful as Jackies, but then again he had The Darkness inside him.
The Hit Lists are standalone missions with the same characters. They too can be played cooperative. They are even more slim than the Vendettas, very short, but still enjoyable.
Did I miss the existence of this game?
For some reason I didn't know about this game until I played it. It's fairly old, from 2012, and although the visuals represent that, everything else is of good quality.
- Very good voice acting.
- The humour pushes the limits, slightly over the top, but doesn't go too far.
- Powerful character, with upgradeable talents.
- Fast paced gameplay.
What I liked slightly less is that the enemies can spawn in places you have already cleared, or some were waiting in closed off rooms. It breaks immersion a little.
The reason for calling the game underappreciated in my first sentences is that this game only has 5500 reviews, which is really low in my opinion. Maybe this game is unknown for many more people.
When you start up the game from your Steam library, the sound accompanied by the logos of the developer and publisher IS REALLY REALLY LOUD!!! Holy smokes, it got me every time!
The Darkness 3 teased!
In an interview with XBOX begin June, for a brief second an XBOX console was seen swallowing a disc with The Darkness III to be seen on it! Sweet!!
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2520551422
With that in mind, this seems like an ideal time to play this game, if you like FPS. I think its sale price is €5,99/$5.99 which I'd like to see lower for a nine years old game. Around this time every year Humble Bundle usually has a 2K bundle, that is a much better value-for-money deal.

They even narrate the descriptions of the collectibles with your good friend Johnny Powell, his insane personality really gives the game that extra charm.
After you're done with the main campaign, there is an extra mode called Vendetta where you can play an additional campaign with 4 new characters with their own unique play-style, out of the 4 I liked Inugami the best, nothing beats a good sword.
The only downside is that the ending is a cliff hanger where we have no idea what happens to Jackie.

I had never played the Vendettas campaign before, which was a mistake. I only wish the game actually identified Vendettas for what they are--an entire campaign about the length of the main campaign. I enjoyed the Vendettas characters--I recommend using Jimmy for the campaign as he is the most fun IMO. I also recommend the Hit List, which are kind of like Call of Duty Special Ops missions. Revisiting the same areas is worth it for little extra bits of story and Left 4 Dead style action with surprisingly unique characters--and it's multiplayer too, if you have a friend with a copy. I squeezed 17 hours out of this game and honestly had way more fun than I expected to. 7/10

I am guessing it was on sale so I picked it up at some point but needless to say I knew nothing about this game and never played the original. Usually sequels are not as good as the originals but if this is a lesser game the original must be the best game ever made!
This game is a real gem, a must play if you like shooters and are looking for something a bit different. I wont spoil any of it other than to say it was not at all what I expected (in a good way) and even the cut scenes kept me watching when in 90% of games I will skip them if they ramble on too much.
Graphically the game has a really cool art style that looks good and ran very smoothly on my PC. Sounds are also of a high standard as is the voice acting.
There really is not much to complain about here, though if I had to look for something to whinge about I did find it annoying that your ability to heal and picking up dropped weapons are both bound to the E key. Which meant that during intense fights I found myself accidentally picking up weapons with no ammo instead of eating hearts to heal (you will see what I mean) and that did get annoying.
But overall this game has really intense gun play, great voice acting and dialogue that isn't destroyed with political correctness and the entire game is really well done.
Highly recommended

The story is good, I really enjoy it
The gameplay is fine, I have to play with the controller, cause M&K is an OK
I die like 6 times in a mission cause there were a lot of enemies. They run at you and kill you...is annoying and I noticed they can still shoot you throw walls when you try to cover
There is a online coop game!
The result is 8/10

This was a really good game. I haven't played darkness one in a very long time so I'm not going to compare it to that one. This game on it's own has great and fun gameplay, with a pretty decent story in my opinion. took me about 5 hours of gametime to complete the game while not speeding through it, and I'm looking forward to my second playthrough.
Now a little more about the game
If you're playing the darkness series for the first time here's the twist, you can't be in the light, or you will be very weak and lose your darkness powers. You need to shoot the lights or generators causing light to shine on you. Once the enemies start knowing that it fucks you up they start bringing big lights to mess you up and it makes for some pretty unique gameplay. Gunplay is also fine, although you will constantly be picking up guns your don't want because you want to eat a heart to get health back and you'll pick up a pistol instead. Which gets annoying after the the third time you've done it and the next 3000 times in the future that you'll do it again.
There was 4 difficulties off rip. I chose the 3rd one. The second to hardest setting and had no major issues. Late game got a tiny bit challenging but nothing rage inducing. You get pretty fucking beefy and I ended up just running around and shooting people while spamming E to eat the dead guys hearts and replenish my health fully.
story was pretty good. It got a bit silly at times so I learned to just not take it too seriously. I will say though that if you don't like being left on a cliffhanger, you might not want to play this unless you're sure you won't care about the story. This is because Darkness 2 came out in February 9th 2012. 9 years and 2 days before this review. And from what it looks like the developers have been bought by other companies more than once since the release, and nothing about darkness 3 has ever really been announced. It's VERY likely that we won't ever get another game (which makes me very sad, digital extremes really had a great catalog of games under them)
Sometimes you will get caught on the floor and have to finagle your way to get past the invisible stump blocking your path. I had to deal with these several times over my runthrough, and one time I legitimately thought it wasn't the right way to go because it wouldn't let me past.
TL;DR
Really good game, story is unfinished and will unfortunately remain unfinished for the foreseeable future, great and unique game play. Worth the $6 I got it for on sale, and worth probably $20 in my opinion. 30 might be pushing it.

Now, the not so great. The pacing of the game is really uneven in places with long cutscenes that you really can't skip. Add in several walk and talk sections that offer great story points but zero action...kind of a momentum killer. Some of the combat conditions also get a bit overwhelming and kind of lazy, IE light blindness. Also, the game is linear, very linear. Within a level section you can explore a bit and look for a few bonus items, otherwise, you're on rails with no way to backtrack.
The co-op is not exactly anything to write home about either although some of the characters in that have the best lines.
Oh yeah, very happy with this game. Just a few gripes, but I have those about almost every game.

The graphics are old, but still fine.
The gameplay is really nice. You can shoot, use special abilities and tear your enemies into pieces with your two serpent arms from hell. This was the big surprise that made the game way more enjoyable and fun. There was lots of action, blood and destruction.
The story is nice (nothing extraordinary, but nice).
It isn’t a super great game, but it isn’t bad either. It is just average and absolutely enjoyable for the short gameplay (4 hours).
30€ is a bit too much for the game though. I recommend buying it for 15 – 20 €.

2. Outstanding Action
3. Graphics Awesome ( Like Borderlands )
4. Amazing Optimization for Low Specs PC
5. Enjoying Game-play

7. Kick-ass Villains
8. Superhero Type Action
9. Easy Achievement
* NEGATIVE
1. Little bit confused about story . Because I didn't play the 1st part.
2. Some Glitches happens sometime.
Conclusion : I finished this game 3 times in this legit version . I enjoyed very much caused this game greatly optimized for low specs pc. And that's why I can get easily 60-70 FPS with High settings. And I really like the Action sequence with super power. I missed the first part and unfortunately not available in steam. I like the characters . Specially Darkling Character , Its so funny and amazing character. There are almost no negative point ( In my point of view). I liked this game very much. Waiting for part 3 , If the developers are showing some interested about this game future.

THE DARKNESS II
THE GAME THAT CALLS YOU INTO THE DARKNESS
The Darkness 2, developed by Digital extremes, which we know from Bioshock and Homefront games, is a first-person shooter game that includes darkness and action.
The Darkness, which was presented to the players as a console game in 2007, appears on all platforms on the PC after a full 5 years.
In the game that starts with a cinematic, information about the previous game is given to those who did not play the first game, and The Darkness 2 is about the events exactly 2 years after the first game.
After the first game, Jackie was able to take control of his dark forces and continue his life as the mafia boss.
He still cannot forget his girlfriend Jenny’s death 2 years ago, and we can even travel to the memories of Jenne with the cinematics between the game.

Don't get me wrong its got a good story and fun mechanics
Now remember this is my own experience
But right now the game is simply unplayable for me because mid way through when the enemies become a little harder to kill the ammo just comes more and more scarce.
Right now I'm stuck on one of my saves where i have around 8 bullets in my magazine on somewhat of a boss fight and i simply cannot get past that point
the game overall before that was honestly a 9.2/10
would recommend ????
( buy on sale though cause it really isn't worth $29.99 )

It's fun to play with interesting mechanics. The story is interesting, though the characters are a bit too clichéd for my liking. The campaign is very short but extra missions bulk it up a bit and are not just cheap bolt-on content - they add to the story. The game looks much than it should given its age, though you might experience technical glitches because it came out many years ago (I experienced stuttering).

Do not flatter yourself, lovers of cutting and shredding, so that with the «blood» — despite the abundance of battles, The Darkness 2 should be appreciated not for the mountains of corpses, cheerfully dismembered in numerous battles.
Yes, as an action movie, this game turned out to be very decent, and the brutality in it will be enough for a dozen Bulletstorms, but we saw action films and more abruptly.
The main thing here is an interactive story about love, faith, hatred and revenge, told in a few hours of playing time. A story in which there are more questions than answers.
????????????????: great plot and dialogue; you really empathize with the hero; stylish graphics; dynamic fights delight at first...
????????????????: ...but by the end of the game frankly bored, some kind of monotony; and as for me the game is short.

The game itself has a strong borderlands like feel to it with the visual graphics cell shaded to make it look very comic book styled. This is done extremely well and the overall feel to the graphics and visual effects of the game are well designed.
The gameplay is fast paced and combat is based mainly on firearms and some quite brutal melee. There are a fair amount of guns to keep any player entertained and the ability to duel wield small side arms does not fail to make you look and feel like a complete badass. you also have a vast amount of character abilities to obtain along the way with a selection of skill trees to progress through.
The story behind the Darkness is also very well written with some small backstory lore to read through and discover, there is not much of this but enough to not make your head spin like the universe of elder scrolls or halo.
Overall this game is one of those games where it can be played over and over and if you are an achievement hunter like myself you will be in for a treat as The Darkness 2 offers some easy achievements for those willing to do a little bit of a grind through the story a couple of times.

Besides dual wielding, eating hearts to recover health and using your tentacles to grab, throw, execute or destroy, you can also unlock the ability to summon a swarm that stuns enemies and the ability to magically enhance your bullets. Even if these features aren't novel, they are nice to have. Executions can give you health, ammo, shields and cooldown reductions, but you will be using them for health recovery most of the time.
The execution animations are serviceable, but you are mostly going to see the same few. The controls for slashing with your tentacles are terrible to use, holding the middle mouse button while swiping the mouse in the intended direction, followed by a slow animation that contrasts with the gunplay.
You can change weapons in the same way as older titles, using the mouse scroll or pressing the button assigned to each weapon type. Not as neat as a weapon wheel, but it usually works. Since you aren't limited by weapon types, you can have two pistols, two SMGs or one of each, in addition to a two-handed weapon. The buttons are therefore not assigned to a weapon type, but to your left and right hands, with the weapons constantly changing. The same buttons you use for eating hearts or collecting ammo can be used to pick up guns, throwing my main gun away was a common annoyance during my playthrough.
SMGs felt incredibly underpowered, but pistols, assault rifles and shotguns felt great to use. Some enemies are bullet sponges or have too much armor, but this is mostly an issue with SMGs. If an armored enemy runs toward you with a melee weapon, use your tentacles, these are hard to kill with bullets. Enemies' AI and enemy variety are serviceable, compensated by the map design and set-pieces.
My time to beat the main story was 8h13m. The story is good, not great. Some emotional beats fall flat, the story is predictable and the open ending leaves a bad taste, but the lore, told mostly through relics' descriptions, is fantastic and keeps you thinking when the writing doesn't. The gameplay is entertaining despite its flaws and there are additional missions after you beat it. It is a good game overall, not great, but I was still entertained during most of it.

The multiplayer part of this game is unfortunately dead, but the offline part of this game is about 10 or 20 hours, maybe more.
Experience this game is not a bad option, in terms of points for this game, I do not have a specific opinion about it, but the experience of trying this game may not be attractive to you.

The titular darkness is some kind of abhorrent supernatural entity or other, and a key part of the game's plot. Your main character is also a mob boss. The game's tone can be surprisingly light considering these factors, with things like your underlings acting like a band of merry rogues, the monster you share your body with having a silly distorted voice and over the top evil lines, the artstyle... It's all fun. The plot itself is interesting enough.
Aside from the usual first person shooting you can expect, your arsenal is augmented with the ability to use the Darkness' tentacles to perform melee attacks, pick up and throw things and murder your opponents in brutal ways (this game can't all be sunshine). You also have a number of skills that can be unlocked to improve your effectiveness in combat. Pretty fun overall.
It's a nice game, I recommend it to shooter fans.

- Not high at all spec requirements. You could run it on a two-core build with a CPU and GPU from 2012 (recommended Core i3/GTX 650 onward)
- Very fun FPS with lots of gun-toting and heart-eating. Is canon to the comic book.
-Awesome soundtrack though not very long.
- Definitely for adults as there are hellish/mob oriented themes (drugs, prostitution, blood sacrifice).
- Difficulty is properly tuned for the casual and hardcore gamer alike. Will not find yourself dying too much.
- Enough XP to be earned for a NG+ playthrough as well as a (dead) multiplayer mode.
- Highly emotional story with some undertones that may leave you a little shocked. I liked it :X
-Eight hours long.
- Was on sale for only five bucks.
-Encountered no glitches.

The Darkness 2: A good game...
if less than 10$It was hard for me to recommend this game considering the 33$ price tag on Steam, mainly because I received the product for free. Still, I enjoyed the game for what it is, a cool surprise for 0$. Is it worth the full price? No. I would never recommend this game at >10$.
Don Estacado
*NO SPOILERS*
Following the events from Starbreeze's The Darkness title (2007), the once mafia hitman Jackie Estacado became the supreme chief commander of the Franchetti crime family. The business was flourishing; drugs were selling, competition was dying and whores were whoring. Everything went fine until a new villain, head of a secret organization, came into play, thus reawakening the Anti-Hero's Darkness that was buried deep within his consciousness. The secret society wants one thing from Jackie Estacado: to drain The Darkness out, killing the newly-made Don in the process.
If you were following comics, or if you are having a penchant for the goth-noir style, then you might appreciate the story. Less ambitious than its predecessor, Digital Extremes's (Warframe, Dark Sector) game is a rather simple, classic tale - the likes of a short comics run you could read on a weekly basis. It is not breathtaking nor awful, and certainly very different from Starbreeze's 2007 near-masterpiece. It is nowhere close to the previous' title emotional rollercoaster. There is no dramatic cliffhanger this time, and the ending is somewhat too abrupt. Nonetheless, it does the job for what it is, an enjoyable story for a cheap price.
All about the guns, too little powers
The Darkness 2 is an FPS with fun gunfights. The dual-wielding gameplay with independent triggers playability constitutes its main strenght. You can choose between 3 weapons - an heavy weapon or two smaller ones - or wield 1 or 2 SMG/pistol at the same time. Digital Extremes were clever enough to had an input to 'inter-swap' dual guns in each hand, making it far more easier to switch your guns left or right instead of dropping the weapons and re-equip them like we're used to. The weapons themselves are typical carbines, shotguns, pistols and SMGs. The arsenal has nothing exotic to offer this time in contrast to the first game.
Unfortunately, this second episode is a massive downgrade when it comes to the Anti-Hero's super-powers. Indeed, Starbreeze Studio built everything from scratch, with foundations already available to re-use, but almost none of them were recycled. Worse, the vast majority got taken away, keeping only two active powers, gun-channeling and swarm, and a few passive ones such as black holes. Why so little powers? I feel like it could have disturbed the game's structure, considering the change of level design from the non-linear levels of its predecessor to having a classic linear design. Which, again, translates in a very different progression.
Additional game modes: Vendettas, Hit lists, Co-Op and New Game +
The Vendettas co-op mode is an excellent addition that you can play online or offline. Although there is only 1 story arc, you have the option to choose between 4 different characters, each having their own gameplay. As an example, JP Drummond has the ability to lift enemies in the air, immobilizing them at the same time, while Shoshana has an overcharged dual shotgun (I prefered playing with her).
For a prolonged experience, Digital Extremes added hitman missions under the Vendettas mode. There are several missions, some of them requiring more than 2 players upon completion.
Graphics and technical execution
Unfortunately I was not able to review that aspect properly since I used my laptop with its Intel Integrated Graphics, which basically runned The Darkness 2 at the lowest settings @ 30fps. There's no word describing how 'low' is really low on this configuration (see screenshots below).
PROS
+ True to the comics
+ Dual guns gameplay
+ Good replay value with NG+
+ Vendettas co-op mode
CONS
- A downgrade in every regard in comparison to the first Darkness game
- Current retail price is too high
- Story's ending
- Dead multiplayer

Game is enjoyable from start to end.
The game is not worth buying at its full price unless discounted due to being a short game.
Finished in one sitting without skipping dialogues at normal difficulty as well as retrying some levels multiple times.

The intro splash screen logo whatever is extremely loud. I launched this game with my audio set to 10 and it still hurt my ears. Pretty sure some asshole intentionally made it that loud.
