Überlegen Sie also genau ob Sie Ihre Kameraden in eine ausweglose Situation bringen.

Here's how the development went:

Developer: Hey, I got this cool game idea that could extend the XCOM universe in a unique way and tell a bit more about its origins. We can set in in the 60s and have old school set pieces contrast with alien tech. Could be fun and cool to look at.
2K: Yeah, here's money! Now go make money!
Developer: Alright. Thanks. We start working right away.

[Time passes…]

2K: Can we make money now?
Developer: Not really mate. We're only like 60% done. Half of the game battles and boss fights aren't done. We have hardly any original facial and body animations. The story is nowhere nearly finished and the last third of the game still looks quite empty without any set pieces. You are still basically running through empty mazes with no enemy encounters whatsoever. So, we still need at least another six months to fill it all up and iron out the kinks, but after that you're gonna have a stellar title on your hands. Promise! :)
2K: But I wanna make money NOW!!! Give me game now!!! Must! Make! All! The! MONEY!!! NOW!!!
Developer: Yeah, but like I said. A couple of more months and the game will be dope. It's nowhere near to being polished and pretty rough. We have no final boss for example.
2K: [has a fit of crying rage] I wanna make money NOW!!! Release game now!!! Booohohooohoooooo....!

And that's sadly how the development for this title went.

Good night!

This is a bad game, you shouldn't play it, but it is fascinating.

First of all, the good: it looks nice. The graphics are excellent for 2013, and the art direction does a good job of operating within the technical constraints of the era in order to give it the timeless look that some games have. It does a very good job of invoking 1950s Americana, with red-brick colleges, golden waves of grain, National Parks, lumber mills and small-town parades. It combines that with Cold War military aesthetic and modern ideas of futuristic alien technology, and the overall effect works quite well.

Unfortunately, there isn't anything else good about the game. The voice acting I suppose was good, in the sense that the actors delivered what the directors asked, but the voice direction itself was terrible. The plot starts out blandly formulaic and turns into an incoherent mess. You can't save at-will and the automatic checkpoints don't happen at convenient points. The agent dispatch mechanic is half-baked, the Mass Effect-style conversations are entirely pointless, the optional missions really should've have been optional, and there are a million tiny unpolished details that all add up to a mildly bad experience.

Of course, a mildly bad experience in the periphery of a game is forgivable if the core gameplay is good, but The Bureau's core is a tactical squad-based third-person cover shooter that is a gigantic trash fire. This is purely the result of the NPC squad mates that the game has cursed you with. They occupy a worthless sour spot in between completely useless unless you constantly micromanage them with squad commands on the one hand and completely unwilling or incapable of following your directions in a useful fashion on the other hand. You can order your squad to move into particular squad locations, but they won't stay there. If any enemy gets too close to them, they'll relocate to someplace safer, except they seem to measure distance to the enemy by a straight line and don't take into account the enemy's ability to actually reach them physically or shoot them at range. This means they move to new cover for no reason. Also the new cover isn't actually safer because they pick the stupidest possible location every time and take the worst possible route to get there. If an enemy grenade flushes them out of their current cover, they won't move back to where they're supposed to be after the grenade detonates. If they get stuck with an enemy sticky grenade, they'll move right next to you and the other squad mate so that all three of you die simultaneously, forcing you to reload from the last checkpoint. If you make the mistake of every using the Mark Target command they'll leave cover and chase their target around the map and die to flanking fire.

The game is unplayable at the default difficulty, and if you turn the difficulty down to the something it’s gameplay systems actually support it doesn't become fun, just tediously possible.

So why did I complete it? Why did I find it fascinating? The Bureau is terrible in a way I have never experienced before. I’ve played mediocre games and bad games and flawed games, but I have never played a game that was so obviously welded together from incomplete fragments, a game where content was cut, entire systems were discarded, and the barest minimum of effort was expended to connect the remnants together into a product they could throw out the door to maybe recover some of their lost money.

A gameplay mechanic to capture enemies alive and steal their guns before they disintegrate is referenced in a cutscene but isn’t actually present in the game. You rescue a scientist in a mission and everybody back at XCOM headquarters starts talking about how his assistant was an alien in disguise, something that wasn’t mentioned in the mission itself. A later mission ends with you capturing an alien alive, yet everyone back at XCOM acts as the alien was killed. About two-thirds into the game minor characters vanish with no explanation, you stop getting story vignettes around the base and NPCs just stand in place and stare into the distance. A bunch of the interactive conversations have blank-faced stiff-bodied barely animated NPCs looking in the wrong direction as they talk to you. The story in the final act of the game is incomprehensible, with characters constantly flipping loyalties and motivations with no rhyme or reason.

It could have been a good game, if they'd aimed a bit lower for something more tractable. An XCOM themed third-person cover shooter without the poor attempt at Mass Effect conversations and the fake gesture towards a branching mission structure and definitely without the terrible squad combat might have been great. However, it is sadly a mess, and not a glorious mess or a boring mess, just a strange artifact of corporate video game development made bare to the audience. Don’t play it.

The original premise of 50s-60s America besieged by aliens from another dimension had so much promise. Then it got bastardized into this because people demanded classic XCOM and 2K decided instead of sticking to their guns or just making classic XCOM, they had to pull this sucker out of the grave, slap some sectoids in it, and call it a day. Play if you want but don't buy the DLC.

I recall when this game was initially announced and subsequently launched it had a lot of backlash because it was different from the traditional X-COM games, being a shooter rather than a turn-based squad strategy game. That's unfortunate because it's actually a fairly good third-person cover shooter.

While nothing above and beyond standard fair for cover shooters, what's present is still rather good and enjoyable. At the moment the full price is $20 and when a sale rolls around this game is easily worth whatever it dips to during the sale.

I needed a break from games that want to take your money after already buying it, survival mechanics and open world check lists. I came back to this after disliking it before. At the time it wasn't the XCOM I was used to but didn't grab me like open world games just emerging at the time did. I came back to it with an open mind and so far it's pretty fun, has a great 50s sci fi vibe, decent graphics and plays pretty well.

Don't worry if this is the XCOM games you know and love because it aint that but as a stand alone scifi third person cover based shooter it's pretty fun. One review said it kinda flowed like mass effect, I see that but it's way more linear and less RPG like. Still so far so good.

Combines third-person shooter and some light squad-tactics.
First thing to realize is that this is a spin-off of the usual X-COM series and plays differently. If that is not an issue for you there's interesting game here.
Visual style is noteworthy in the 1960s style.

If LA Noire and Destroy All Humans had a lovechild, it would be this. It's a vibe. Also bonus points for a squadmate voiced by Garrus Vakarian's VA.

My introduction to the XCOM series was Enemy Unknown on the PS3, so I'm a fairly recent fan and from a console perspective at that. I'm not sure how I ended up playing The Bureau, but I remember not getting very far into it whenever I first tried it. It was a decent game, but for one reason or another I never got very far in it.

Having just completed it on PC, I am a little sad that this title was so maligned on release. While I am a HUGE fan of the Enemy Unknown universe, the atmosphere in The Bureau was very much up my alley. I love conspiracy theory, X-files type stories and if they're set in the late 50's, early 60's even better. This game was essentially that. Think the style and setting of Mad Men with the sensibilities from the X-files.

However, it is not an XCOM game. Far from it, really. It's more in line with Mass Effect in terms of gameplay than anything else. It's not a compelling or very innovative game in terms of gameplay, but it more than gets the job done. I played it with a controller, and it felt very natural to play with it.

On the one hand, I get the hate it got. On the other hand, I also am a little angry that we'll never see an extension of this game's universe. I think it could've been a compelling counterpart to the traditional XCOM universe we know and love.

The games big twist is also pretty great. Shame few people have stuck with the game long enough to experience it!

Recommended but only if these three criteria are met :

It's on heavy discount (most important)
You are a curious lifelong X-Com fan like me (since UFO: Enemy Unknown on my Amiga 500 in 1994 )
You also enjoy old Sci Fi B movies from the 1950's and 1960's and are interested in early cold war American history.

Otherwise don't buy this as it's X-Com in name only, there are so many other better X-Com games available and this has none of the core components of them :

No research
No base building
No Personnel / inventory management
No interceptions
No economy
No global view
No politics / factions
No destructible / random tactical terrain battles
No morale, training or injury systems

This game plays like a weird stripped down mishmash of a linear story driven game with heaps of voiced dialogue and a hybrid first person shooter and 3rd person real time tactical squad game (if you can call 3 people a squad).

And unfortunately all the apparent important choices made during the dialogue of the game and little investigations you make along the way appear to have little to no effect whatsoever on the outcome of the story and the fps/tactical action part of the game is lackluster at best.

Playing this feels a bit like LA noire mixed with Mass Effect made for console gamers ?, It's like the developers switched the type of game it would be half way into development.

Or perhaps they were really not sure themselves what type of game It should be and just realized they eventually had to ship something and cut everything else expect the hours of voiced story dialogue they had and tacked it onto a clunky tactical shooter system.

This reminds me of when X-com interceptor came out and why the formula should not be changed.

If this had all the core concepts of X-com implemented and they concentrated on it being either a decent FPS or a robust real time tactical game instead of trying to be both, I think this could have been something so much better.

Finally the two (only ?) main strengths of this game seem even to be unfortunately flawed in my opinion :

The wonderful 1950/1960's aesthetic for X-Com and their period setting is very competently believably done, but the design for the Aliens themselves and their technology is not complementary of the depicted time at all and is simply jarring and spoils it (it should be more like classic silver flying saucers, tentacled monsters and little green (grey) men with ray guns invading from mars to match the time its set in )

And the story that they spent so much time world building with all the dialogue is not really consistent, coherent or convincing and feels rushed : You begin at the start of a brutal surprise invasion from a vastly technologically superior enemy that obliterates all earth defenses.
But then proceed to a Human resistance capable of completely understanding the aliens advanced technology, striking back using it and ending this invasion in what seems like over the course of just a few days.

TLDR :
It's like oh no the aliens are attacking but look we almost had everything we needed to defeat them already anyway so we just need you to complete half a dozen short linear missions with a couple of people and then we will have everything we need to defeat them, OK go get em !, well done you won, now the ending (don't worry we will cover up everything after so nobody will remember when the aliens attacked and destroyed everything killing nearly everyone on Earth by hiding it with fences and a few misleading newspaper headlines but all this alien technology we now have will be lost for unknown reasons before the next time they invade wtf ?)

Ran fine for me on Linux using Proton.

I've never played a XCOM game before, but I'm aware of the series from Let's Plays. I understand this isn't well received by a lot of XCOM fans because it isn't really representative of the series.

The game itself is fine. The story is like a Cold War era monster flick. It has an interesting combat which is more tactical where you give orders to your squad. Orders that are necessary as it felt like they had some of the worst AI that I've seen. I played on Squaddie (second easiest) and it felt hard at times mostly because of how bad the AI can be. You can have the squad set in the perfect flanking positions, but then when you start using your abilities, you will find that your squad is inexplicably running to you giving the aliens easy focus fire. Some of the larger battles in the end were so chaotic trying to keep you squad in order.

Finding weapons during missions to unlock them for yourself during the mission and the squad the next time you can access the Agent list was a nice touch IMO,. You have side missions, but also dispatches where you can send Agents off their own (as long as the combined levels of the agents met a threshold)..

I played 1 mission of the DLC, but stopped as it was basically just pure combat which wasn't really what kept me interested.

For it's price, I find it's a decent game worth trying out, but it shouldn't be taken as representation of the XCOM series.

I'd like to start by saying that this is the first XCOM game I've played.
Had no problems with bugs and the game run smoothly with the recommended NVIDIA Experience settings.

This one is a classic Tactical Third Person Shooter. I understand why many people mention Mass Effect in their reviews, there are some influences, but it has nothing to do with ME. The story cannot be altered by the dialogs you have with various characters in the game and the only time your choices really matter is in the end.

The story is OK for a sci-fi fun. Not it's strong point and if the developers were going for a strong story they failed.
This is an enjoyable game if you like the Tactical Shooter genre and want to kill some invading aliens.

Last I'd like to add that if you are a seasoned gamer in the shooter genre play it at Commander difficulty. I started it on Veteran and most missions were not challenging enough.

If you are expecting a typical XCOM style game, this is very much different. But if you like 3rd person, squad based game play similar to Mass Effect 2 or Star Wars Republic Commando, and love the 1960s theme, then this game might be up your alley.

The controls are best for controller, which is what I used, and I enjoyed all of it that I even got the DLC which features some of the hardest battles you'll face in the game, and had a blast.

The story is alright, nothing to write home about. But I found the setting, voice acting and just the general look of the game appealing. I love the 1960s theme and really enjoyed it. If I had time nowadays, I would totally play it again.

NOTE: I finished it in commander difficulty.

I'm not gonna lie that I did enjoy the game, but I would not recommend it. Too keep it short, there are better games out there. Just get Spec Ops: The Line, Star Wars: Republic Commandos, Brothers in Arms games or whatever. Stay out from this one.

Everything worked just fine for me. However, it does feel unpolished. It's underwhelming from both gameplay and story. There is nothing redeemable unless you like some mindless shooting.

Starting with the squad system, I have to hover around obstacles just to pin point my commands during slow motion. Why not just allow players to clip through while in command menu? It's irritating because I can't execute quicker. The AI squad were fine from my experience, but like many squad based games they can be stubborn. Like charging into danger spot even if commanded to hold still. The engineers and support class can barely kill during early to mid stages of levels because of the guns provided to them. It's not until at the later stage when you can acquire better guns for them to use.

The gameplay suffered due to uncreative level designs. For all of my encounter; I hold out, retreat, and go on circles. Enemy types were recycled through out the game. There were only 3 boss fights I think. There isn't much of tactical options since squad AIs tails on the player. I can barely execute a planking maneuver. So for the most part I played defensively.

I won't dig too much about the story. It's a hit or miss. I felt no connection to any of the characters at all. William Carter's emotional struggle didn't mean anything at all. Agent Weaver's motives was basically a fart to the face. The opportunity to develop a brotherhood among the XCOM agents was stripped away in favor of customization. I was hoping Nils, Kinney, and DaSilva to be in my teammate, but they were wasted.

The game had some good ideas like the squad ability/powers. The 1950's era setting was something fresh. If 2K Marin could add more guns, more enemy variety, polish the PC controls, hire better level designers and writers. This could have reach at least 7/10.

Great, immersive story. I love the 1950's aesthetic, and it think it captures the cultural zeitgeist of the 50's quite well. There are some nice set pieces. If you're a massive fan of the other XCOM games, you may find this one doesn't quite fit the mold. Don't let that put you off though. It's a great game in its own right, and cranking up the difficulty provides a decent challenge.

It's a shame they haven't done more with The Bureau. I think if I wasn't attached to XCOM people would have given it a fairer run.

The game mechanic takes some time to get used to, but once you get a hang of it, it's really entertaining and challenging, specially on the last levels, where you have to take squeeze out every resource and tactics you know.
Other than that, well... the story is interesting at the beginning and middle game but it gets really, really stupid at the last arch. Not gonna spoil it, but it just didn't make sense at all, IMO. Did they change writers at this stage?
Also, there is no incentive to recruit more agents. You can make do with the initial agents they provide you, since the rewards for sending them on alternative missions are items or other recruits you will never use.

All and all, I recommend this game for the gameplay alone, which is actually really fun to play. for what it is worth.

What if X-Com were Mass Effect? That is basically what The Bureau is, atomic age Mass Effect. The gameplay is strikingly similar with your two companions that aren't smart enough to do more than crouch behind chest high wall and shoot guns without your direct orders. Combat sections are broken up by walking and talking segments. Slow Elevators make you stop and enjoy textures sliding past.

All in all the game is competently put together, although not particularly long. Some of the length comes from obvious padding like making carter walk around with a stick up his butt in the hub world and a bunch of fetch quests you can do to unlock minor perks.

The X-Com influence isn't completely lost. It retains the upside down difficulty curve, where the early game missions are much harder than the later game missions. The alien threat initially levels up a lot faster than your team, but once you get a couple of buddies up to level 3 or so it becomes massively easier since they unlock powerful abilities that allow you to dominate the AI. Pretty soon they run out of tricks and resort to just spamming huge waves of enemies at your heavily fortified positions like a WWI infantry charge. I had to restart some of the early fights many many times, sometimes half a dozen times or more. After about the halfway point that no longer happened and I only had to restart a couple of times. However this does mean most battles start off with you instantly going into slow-mo mode and spamming abilities on all three characters. The game has permadeath, but if one of your guys dies you're probably going to lose the battle anyway and have to load a save so it really doesn't matter much. I did have one guy die early on in the campaign (he died in the last wave of a really tough fight), but since he was still level 1 I let him go. I think there was an idea that you'd be constantly replacing your team as they die, but the game got too easy once they leveled up and it never came up again. By the end of the game I had a full roster of maxed out agents, most of which I had never seen in the field.

The storyline mostly works, although it's a little hard to believe that they managed to keep an entire invasion under wraps. The story works, but it's pretty by the numbers and there are a number of aspects that seemed half assed. The late game heel turn(?) by Carter seemed especially confusing and pointless. Lots of other story elements were only lightly touched on and quickly forgotten. The dialog trees are short and rarely affect anything. There is one you have to watch out for that can end up getting a guy killed if you aren't paying close attention.

Overall it's not terrible, just derivative. I didn't run into any bugs (I see many other reviews talking about them), but the performance wasn't great either. I had to run at about medium detail settings on a 1070ti to get a decent framerate on a 1920x1080 display. That's pretty awful for a game from 2013.

Just not worth money and time...

Issues I had during my playthrough:
• Game crashed twice.
• Game become unresponsive after Alt-Tabing several times, did not even counted.
• Very noticable texture pop-in due to very close rendering distance for example grass.
• One dialogue overshadows another one, for example tried to listen to recorded message and some npc decided to have a talk which prevented me from hearing that recorded message.
• Some cutscenes had no sound.
• Sometimes during gameplay there were no sounds of surroundings, gun fire (while npc speach remained).
• There are places in missions where aliens patrol area without being alarmed by xcom presence when closing in on those areas friendly NPCs sometimes comment how aliens have not seen us yet and we could sneak around for better possition to ambush only to ruin this next moment going guns blazing at aliens.
• Autosaves/checkpoints on some levels were too far apart, when failed I had to redo great amount of fights
• Very bad animations: npc's do not face player when talking to them do not turn around to face them or anything in that regard.
• Sticky cover system, very easy to stick to it but not so easy to get away from cover, becomes issues when enemy flanks and need to move away.
• Very dumb friendly npc's, stops listening to move commands after short while and tries to move to new possition even when not in danger.
• Only seen this few times but NPC sometimes teleports right in front player(not skill).
• Character animations sometimes break in cutscenes (instead of talking to my character another character suddenly faces window turning back on me like before I triggered interaction with him and continues to talk to me)

Game design I personaly did not liked:
• All missions are same, go from A to B and kill everyone do some insignificant stuff in between, no stealth missions considering troops wearing linen pants turtleneck shirts and boiler suits.
• There's like 15 or 20 backpack which gives different effect but most of them just useless crap...
• Cutscenes are rendered in 720 if not lower and looks atrocious, while in game realtime rendered cutscenes have inconsistences with player guns in hand (while I play with plasma gun in cutscene it somehow turns into M14 and after cutscene ends back to plasma weapon)

I can't recommend this game in good conscience due to it feeling very unpolished, unfinished and rushed, which is the best case scenario as the other possible scenario would be that this was exactly what they wanted to launch and that would be a very bad joke so I'm sticking to believing this could have been a better and bigger game but sadly game development isn't always so cut and dry.

The game can be quickly described as Mass Effect meets XCOM, the game tries to do work as both of them but fails terribly. The soundtrack isn't memorable, characters are forgettable, combat is forgiving for an XCOM game (except on veteran or commander difficulties, avoid them unless you want an achievement) and the story is not that well written or thought out.

I can only recommend this if its on sale, you don't care that much about games being masterpieces and can enjoy even garbage games or if you just want to expand your Steam library for kicks and giggles (and steam points)

Also a recommendation, disable Physx, the effects are beautiful but its very badly optimized, even a 1650 with a Ryzen 3100 drops to less than 10FPS in some instances and I can play Borderlands 2 maxed out with a solid 60FPS and that's a newer bigger game.

This was a decent game in my opinion. I think most people don't understand that they were trying something new. They were not trying to be XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It is very similar in play style to the first Mass Effect game. It is basically just a story that tries to add dept to the XCOM lore and show that they have been active for a long time. Not a great game, but not deserving of all the hate.

Great game! It's a pity tha 2K Marin is no more, probably was a great coomunigy of game developers.
About the game: it's a lot of fun!!!
Sure Xcom as a shooter quite a refreshing new idea , but really at the end of the day , what counts the experience , which in my opinion is great!
MUST BUY!

Amazing game! It is like Mass Effect: Andromeda, but in X-Com 2 setting. Sure, it has nothing to do with original X-Com, but it is a great game on its own!

Pro tip: Disable PhysX to avoid crashes!

This tactical, third-person shooter version of XCOM could have been successful had it not been for both technical and the lamebrained gameplay. What most will experience in the beginning of playing is that the program will invariably crash and or minimize itself arbitrarily. Not only does one have to worry about the lose of progress, but they must also endure enemies shooting through solid structures, an unintelligent A.I. system for both allies and enemies, and being rewarded little no nothing when completing missions. If 2K Games was going to attempt to pleasantly take the XCOM series into a slightly different direction, then they might have wanted to do more research and polishing before selling this misshapen by-product.

Loved this game, but don't expect it to be like a normal XCOM game. Plays a bit like Republic Commando, or some tactical 3rd person shooter like Mass effect. You know, ordering your troops certain battlefield tasks. Not sure why there was ever any dislikes. Even now in 2021..I'd still recommend the game.

I love the idea behind this game - a XCOM style alien invasion in the sixties - mixed up with squadplay while you control your character in real time third person but man is this game balanced badly. I can't tell my stupid AI buddies to hold still while I take care of a turret that keeps killing them, and this is not even on a hard difficulty. Micromanaging my team mates while at the same time not being able to give them a weapon lying to their feet is frustrating. I would like to see more of this game but not like this. I also have stuttering on a very decent machine, minor glitches everywhere which lets me not recommend this game.

Everyone knows by now not to expect this to be like a typical XCOM game, but even then it's a rough playthrough. Combat subtly changes as you progress, but from encounter to encounter you just repeat the same steps and strategies. The plot wasn't great either.

NOTE: I have not played XCOM: Enemy Unknown or XCOM 2, thus my (re)view is based on this title alone and not as a series entry - your mileage may vary if you are versed in either of those.

Described by TotalBiscuit as a mixture of Mass Effect and XCOM, The Bureau sees you fill the role of Agent Carter in a narrative prequel to Enemy Unknown and plays much as you would imagine a blend of those two games would, i.e. a tactical (mostly) third-person shooter set in the early XCOM universe. As Carter, you proceed from a surprise invasion through a story of intrigue up to a challenging final encounter, which (I believe) sets the scene well for the following games.

As you progress, you gain new abilities (really lite RPG) which either enhance or add new abilities. It is important to note that the skill tree (this applies to your squad as well) is a binary choice, i.e. you choose a skill following which the other option is locked permanently. Characterisation and voice acting are well done (with Carter deserving special mention) and the gameplay itself introduces new enemies on a fairly regular basis - even if everything does become repetitive after a while. You command two agents in addition to yourself - the agents all have their own specialities spread across four distinct classes and their skill trees are also assigned by the player, which adds a great deal of flexibility to the missions in terms of how you approach the situation.

However, one of the biggest issues with this game is the AI. Enemies can be a bit dense, but that is easily dealt with by just increasing the difficulty. Your squad mates are the real issue: expect to do a fair amount of micromanaging and brace for the resulting frustration. On lower difficulties it is not so bad, but on Commander it turns challenging scenarios into battles which are almost impossible to win: your squad mates will quite literally decide, all by themselves, that it is a good idea to change positions and run through enemy fire to do so. If one of them is downed, there is a short revive/stabilise period, but death is permanent - if you lose a squad member, he will need to be replaced with another (most likely level 1 agent).

It is not the greatest game ever, and hardcore fans of the newer XCOM games might not find this to their taste - but there is some enjoyment here if you look for it with an open mind (assuming you can look past the shoddy AI). The game does feel like it could have benefited from another few weeks of QA, but it is not as bad as most people suggest.

Played on Windows 10 Pro x64 with only minor issues. My problems stemmed from PhysX (simply disable it) and the odd freeze was easily solved with ALT-TAB.

The game is a very different take on the XCOM formula - and it's amazing. I love the inclusion of real world history and the pressure of Cold War era being involved. The character personalities are tense and fitting. It also still contains some of the RPG feel with the Battle Focus feature, selecting cover for your squad and issuing orders while fighting in real time. The game keeps the pressure on you and is challenging but without overwhelming you. It takes patience and timing. It has great dialogue and feels very cinematic and engaging. That being said there are differences from the main XCOM formula but seeing it in a different format is a breath of fresh air.

The Bureau is a light tactical third-person shooter set in the 1960s' US when suddenly Earth becomes the target of an alien invasion. Of course a couple people suspected something like this may happen and formed The Bureau (aka XCOM) to at least deliver some resistance, and you end up being one of those designated to deliver some kickin' of butts to the alien invaders.

If you're familiar with the X-COM games of old, don't expect too much likeness - there are some elements from X-COM that have been incorporated into The Bureau, but overall it is noticeable that the game was meant to be something unrelated until halfway through development someone decided to slap the X-COM label on it. If you can look past the X-COM label (and, frankly, with the old X-COM games not really being overly heavy on story I believe this is not overly difficult), The Bureau is actually a fun and mostly well-designed TPS, playing very similar to the somewhat older Mass Effect games.

The game is very linear and relatively short, though - even if you want to make sure you see everything and read every snippet of in-game lore you'll beat the game (including the short second campaign available as DLC) in less than 20 hours. I don't think that's a bad thing, however - while the setting could certainly have been expanded on some more, I do appreciate a game that can actually be finished with 100% achievements in a reasonable amount of time.

Story-wise The Bureau is pretty decent, though parts of the story feel a bit too hurried and the meta twist at the end is rather contrived. Still, it is noticeable that a substantial amount of work has gone into the setting and at least I found it rather delightful to explore. I would have appreciated a less impulsive protagonist, though, and some of his flipping out in dialogues seems over the top to me.

Nevertheless, I think overall The Bureau very well accomplishes what it sets out to do, and at least to me it is one of the more entertaining games I have played recently. It is certainly not free of flaws, from repetitive face textures over somewhat too sticky cover impeding on your movement to a sometimes seriously handicapped companion AI, but I still feel that I can recommend it, at least to people who can enjoy story-driven tactical TPS games and don't take offense at the X-COM brand being slapped on a 1960s UFO conspiracy story.

I now know the fear that my soldiers felt when facing mutons in XCOM.

I bought this thinking that it was going to be a stricly FPS game. I'm glad it turned out to be something else.

This is a 3rd person shooter and tactical game combined. As William Carter, you lead a squad through a series of a challenging missions.

Your squad members have different classes, levelling up unlocked unique abilities for each class. This opens up a world of tactics to use to outwit the Outsiders.

Unlike the turn-base XCOM games, time merely slows down while you give orders to your squad members. The pressure is always on.

My biggest issue with this game is probably the poor AI for your squad members. Sometimes they randomly charge into the line of fire. I wish that you could have more control over them.

Overall, this was a refreshing game to play. Never played anything like it before.

The Bureau: XCOM is different to other XCOM titles and reminds one more of Mass Effect's gameplay. Babysitting your squad is much more important here though because the squad members are often brain-dead and stand out in the open without your orders. But fear not then you have healing powers and most enemies will be killed by your hands anyway.

The game is under-appreciated for what it did right. A sudden alien invasion in the 60's threw Earth and governments around the world into disarray. A secret agency, the Bureau of Strategic Emergency Command, is determined to strike back. The bureau's HQ is the main hub and it is huge. You can talk with a lot of people, do side-missions and find a lot of interesting lore notes or listen to interesting dialogues. The atmosphere of 2/3 of the story is quite well done. I didn't like the direction the game took in the last third, but you still have some control over it with its multiple endings. Recommended to players who like big HQs and atmospheric shooters.

I recently bought the game on pc after playing it back when it launched on the Xbox 360. It plays much better on PC than it did on the 360. The controls felt weird and imprecise on the 360 but after playing on pc with an xbox one controller it feels much better.
Graphically it still holds up and runs well at 1440p.
I dont mind the story and gameplay, feels like mass effect mixed with a gears game.
Overall I would give it a 7/10. If you can get it on sale cheap then add a point to the score.

I actually had a lot of fun with this one.

It departs from the usual Xcom formula, being a tactical 3rd person shooter rather than a turn based strategy.
The game is a bit rough around the edges but is an overall pretty good experience and I genuinely hope that there's a return attempt at something like this again, with a bit for depth and content.
The story is fairly decent but isn't great, but I really like how they wrote in the 3rd person element (spoilers so won't elaborate).

I definitely recommend giving this a try.

It looks like, ↓

Mafia II (Classic)

Sniper Elite V2,

note I refer to the base editions (not the remasters).

Aliens HAVE decided to overtake the world, the perspective is from The Bureau of the
US Government that investigates the activity of these beings.
Set in the 1960's approximately.

True to the XCOM roots (*turnbased tactical),
your AI team-mates follow your tactical orders in combat (->F2, regroup on me<-).
XCOM incorporating into the bigger storyline of all XCOM games
their basis for the ''ALIEN INVASION''.

As the events unfold the game plays in a LINEAR fashion.

DX11 available.

Aside from the visuals (which were impressive at the time) and the 1960s atmosphere, the game doesn't have a lot going for it.

It says it's XCOM but in reality it's a mediocre Mass Effect clone, where your main objective is to find ways how to prevent your teammates from dying.

It isn't a bad game, it's just very bland. Give it a try only if you absolutely have nothing else to play.

This is a really great game! Its like XCOM but in first person view. (FPS/strategy hybrid)

Instead of being above of the action you are literally in combat and can move your squad around in first person view. It's challenging but exciting! There are a few bugs but nothing game breaking(at least not so far).

If you have problems with crashes there is a simple fix for it. Here's the link: https://steamcommunity.com/app/65930/discussions/0/343787283754990191/

Go into it with an open mind; with no expectations and you will not be disappointed. Happy gaming!

TL;DR

Notoriously panned by critics and XCOM fans for various misconceptions, The Bureau is, in fact, an excellent representative of a niche genre of tactical shooters, where you are in control of a squad. The game features unique gameplay and requires some time to understand its mechanics. There is a learning curve, and most people just leave it and don’t come back.

Full Review

If you were following the XCOM franchise reboot since its beginning, you probably know the troublesome history of The Bureau. The game was in development for years and suffered multiple transitions between different teams and management; the final product suffered from poor marketing and association with the XCOM series. All this mess led to various misconceptions about what this game is and what it should be. With the success of XCOM: Enemy Unknown and its expansion XCOM: Enemy Within in the foreground, The Bureau was swift to fall into oblivion. And that is unfortunate because the game itself is splendid.

The 1960s, USA, beginning of an alien invasion (funnily enough, aliens look exactly like the ones from any other XCOM reboot game.) You play as an agent William Carter who joins a secretive final frontier agency called XCOM and assumes control of the squad to counter alien invasion in the fields. Carter has a troublesome personality and keeps smoldering anger on his duties and people responsible for his horrifying past inside. The game makes a decent effort to persuade you in the story and immerse you in the main character, and for a reason. While the plot is stereotypical to the bone, it has its share of unexpected twists near the end.

At first, The Bureau feels like any other third-person shooter – you move, you shoot. However, it might quickly frustrate or even infuriate you if you would treat the game as your average shooter because it is not what it is. The tactical element that lies in its core is essential for progress and enjoyment. You have to micromanage every action sequence, which is not as difficult as it sounds – the in-game time significantly slows when you open the commands menu. When you get a hold of commanding mechanics and learn different classes and abilities, the game starts to shine like a diamond. You give commands and trick overpowered enemies into traps; you make ambushes and regroup when something goes wrong. Well-thought-out tactics are your greatest weapon. Star Wars Republic Commando, another prime example of squad-based tactical shooters, is much simpler in this regard.

There are some issues, of course. Low-quality lip-sync, imperfect save system, and occasional bugs make the overall experience not as good as it ought to be. Story DLC is trash. 2K Marin, the studio behind The Bureau, fell silently apart before it could fix anything. Other than that, this game is outstanding. It is clearly not meant for everyone, though, especially not for people who want to shoot around rather than command a squad. For everyone else, it might be a fresh experience. And for any of you who remembers mid-2000’s hits like Star Wars Republic Commando or SWAT 4 and wants a similar experience, this game is a must-have.

An interesting concept to me. I was never a huge fan of the X com series when I was younger. Not to say they weren’t bad, but some people’s definition of hard and my definition of literally impossible are the same thing. The bureau promised to be something different however.
It starts off all right to me, with gun fights and mechanics reminiscent of Gears of War, or Mass Effect 2. Using cover to move around, shooting when you can, giving quick commands to move your team around. It starts off pretty enjoyable, and simple.
It doesn’t seem to share much with the xcom franchise however. With the breathe of life given to the other x-com games, this one just didn’t seem to inhale when it was supposed to. The rpg aspect of all your teammates, and loading out their gear, felt like Diet X-com. the choices and such seemed so shallow and non consequential that I wasn’t even sure why they were there in the first place.
The games shootouts and movement felt okay, but that was it. Just okay. It’s trying to present a 1950s where we are fighting aliens, but it felt so underwhelming.
If you really enjoyed the gun fights in mass effect 2, this game is for you. But with a lackluster story and characters, I really don’t think I could recommend it.

Pros:

-Decent enemy AI, with good variations in types and quality of enemies.

-Excellent tactics based combat.

-Easy to learn.

Cons:

-Friendly AI is stunningly stupid. Like, jaw-droppingly dumb. If you order your squad to stay put and cover you, while you charge ahead to outflank the enemy, they follow you anyway and 1) get killed or 2) just end up directing all the enemy fire in your direction.

-The XCOM base feels somewhat pointless. You can't really do much there other than chat with NPCS.

-Captured alien weaponry really isn't better than conventional human ones. I mostly kept the M 14 and shotgun the entire game and did just fine.

-Mediocre story line.

Nutshell: 3.5/5. The Bureau was a fun, fast paced 3rd person shooter, that as challenging, but did not have brutal learning curve. This game is unfairly hated on, in my opinion. Many XCOM fans hate it because it didn't stick to canon. If you're a stickler for canon purity, this game is definitely not for you. If you're a casual fan or just someone that enjoys sci fi shoot-'em-ups, give The Bureau a try when it's on sale.

Really, this a great game. If you love the more grid-based XCOM games, you'll really dig this FPS take on the series.

That is, if you can get the damn thing to play longer than five minutes without crashing.

Ok I've had this games since maybe 2010 and I've always loved the story and gameplay for it. It's just a shame because ever since i first bought the game (on disc even) and not matter what pc/laptop i'm trying play it on, it will always loose all sound after the first couple missions. Then from that point no matter what I do or how much I google it I can never find a fix and have never been able to make it past the first couple missions. TLDR though it's a great game but broken on steam and if you actually wanted to play it i'd look into seeing if the version on the xbox works or if you're deaf anyway and don't mind not having any sound.

The story is standard XCOM stuff with Bioware-esque storytelling mixed in. Felt like Mass Effect 3 meets XCOM. Interpret that as you will. Nothing extraordinary is done with the characters, story, or background.

You will always deploy with up to 2 AI team members from a roster of agents with different classes. Pick what you think will mesh, and go get them killed. Why do I say this? Simply because, your team AI will repeatedly, REPEATEDLY break cover that you JUST ordered them to hide behind a mere second ago, which is SAFE, because they can't get a shot on the enemy. ...Even if it means they charge forward into their own demise.

You're going to spend most of your time in combat babysitting your AI partners, constantly telling them where to go and use their skill sets if you don't want to have to charge through a battlefield full of plasma and laser fire to rescue good 'ol Jimmy because Jimmy thought that getting up close to shoot at a squad of aliens with a MARKSMAN SNIPER RIFLE was a FANTASTIC IDEA. Great going Jimmy! Enjoy that face full of alien lead. You Earned It.

...Rant about the horrid AI aside, the powers are neat, but felt like they needed...more options to them. Felt lacking. Both for your own power set and your squad mates power sets.

For how much I just crapped on the game, It can be fun, but don't play it on the hardest difficulty. Go for Easy to experience the story, go for Veteran for a challenge, and, if you're masochistic and think punching yourself in the groin isn't cutting it right now, go Veteran and try to get the achievement for no squad mate deaths. GOOD EFFING LUCK, YOU'RE GONNA NEED IT.

As for me, I can't recommend this game. It just doesn't hold itself up at all. The older XCOM games are worth the money. This...isn't. Get it on a sale, play on Easy, maybe you'll have a good time.

This is a really fun Xcom game situated in the fifties. I love the fifties setting, nice graphics for an old game.

Health tips: Let go of the turn based Xcom games and all of its established features.
Embrace the action packed third person viewed battles. Use the super slow motion feature to control your two Xcom colleagues and use your and their special skills.
Your colleagues have a mind of their own and will act and move but will try to listen to all your commands and even ask for them.
Immerse yourself in the story and look at this game as a special not-standard Xcom game.

I finished it in 26-ish hours which is rather fast, because for me it was really captivating.
Little tip: try easy mode and enjoy the fascinating story and actually good battles.
Choose your difficulty with care, this little gem can really kick your buttocks.
It totally surprised me how much I would like this game. I'd like more of this in a future Xcom game.

Should you see it on sale, don't hesitate. If you like immersive story driven action with interesting progression in skills and gear and you're not afraid to look around for things to discover and you have a modicum of patience, well then...
Get yourself some popcorn and a drink, have a seat, dim the lights and... Enjoy.

Like others, not sure why this game's rating is mixed. It's good. Not more, not less, just good. Guns are fun, set pieces and aesthetic are nice, story isn't bad and has a good twist, dialog isn't the worst, and progression was good enough for me. My biggest complaint is the awful squad AI. Their skills are useful and cool, but their ability to find and move to effective cover without my exact command every 5 seconds was the worst part. You're a babysitter the entire game. I would play a modern sequel in a second. Thanks for the fun 2K Marin!

Despite the mixed reviewes it is a dope game.
I had the game for over 2 years in my library and never played.
Now i finished the campaign and i am on my way to buy n2

The only thing that makes the experience a bit clingy is the covers and the way your squad shoots when you issue commands they live their place with no reason to regroup with you but other than that its a nice story and nice gameplay totally reccomend

XCOM: BioWare edition

This game definitely doesn't make it easy to like it! Don't expect it to be as polished as XCOM: Enemy Unknown or have the same game mechanics: it's closer to Mass Effect in that regard. You control the main character and give orders to your comrades. Be careful with the dialogue wheel though: unlike Mass Effect and Dragon Age, the topic exploration is on the right side of the wheel and moving to the next dialogue stage is on the left.

What The Bureau does really well:
  • you get to inhale the atmosphere of the 1960s, with sweet cars, sexism, cigarette smoke screens and a thousand and one derogatory nickname for scientists;
  • main characters' models are also a joy to look at, and great voice acting helps make them feel more alive;
  • a ton of details that make you feel that the game is made with love: Carter smoking a cigarette when idle, characters on the base mentioning each other and events around them, your actions and dialogue choices having small, but noticeable consequences.

Where it didn't deliver:
  • textures and models are often (and unexpectedly) low quality. It's most evident on the mission maps, where the overall atmosphere is pleasant, but a closer look reveals all the flaws;
  • facial and body animation is straight up awful. Characters mostly move only their mouths while talking (sometimes they don't open them at all), and it looks completely unnatural. Remember to check Carter's idle facial animation, definitely something to keep you awake at night;
  • XCOM Declassified gives out strong console game vibes: tunnelled environments and plot, no manual save feature (read up on bugs related to it before playing the game to save some nerve cells), maps are divided into smaller inaccessible chunks that are easier for consoles to load, hence overwhelming amount of doors, cliffs and rubble to jump off;
  • hasty storytelling that relies a lot on written information sources including loading screens, whaaaaat? It would work on a console, but on the PC the game loads too fast to read anything! The game also omits details, as many events simply happen off-screen probably to save budget, and has problems with logic that make the whole story fall apart;
  • a lot of minor bugs.

Overall, the game feels unfinished and undercooked: there is definitely a lot of potential and love in it, but it's buggy, tunnelly and overly expensive for what it is. I strongly suggest buying it on sale and in a bundle, and if you can overlook all the problems I mentioned above, you will enjoy it.

Score: 7/10

A new real time twist on the XCOM mechanics that provides backstory to the main games. Though it may not outshine the main series it still provides an enjoyable ride.

Pros
+Interesting new mechanics
+Developing lore
+Team building
+Team customization
+Research new weapons

Cons
-Can feel repetitive at times
-Nothing groundbreaking

Best played if you'd like more story to the already iconic XCOM series and interested in playing the classic gameplay of the originals in a new way that though may not be perfectly executed still functions.

Not Recommended.

Recommended on sale you're a fan of the XCOM series.

The review is organized by categories with additional notes if I have something to add.

Game's Visuals (Graphics)
[ ] Beautiful
[ ] Good
[x] Decent
[ ] Bad
[ ] Poor

Personal Note: The game was released in 2013 and the project was rushed from what I've heard. I personally admire cartoony graphics, similar to Overwatch and Team Fortress 2, but that's my taste.

Game's Sound Design
[ ] Beautiful
[ ] Good
[x] Decent
[ ] Bad
[ ] Poor

Personal Note: I had certain cutscenes with absent sound. However, the sound design overall isn't impressive. It gets the job done and that's about it.

Gameplay Mechanics
[ ] Beautiful
[ ] Good
[ ] Decent
[x] Bad
[ ] Poor

Personal Note: I really love the pausing mechanic of slowing down the battlefield to issue orders and use the mechanics, that was really fun! However, the AI isn't impressive and you are limited to two teammates. Discover which combination and abilities works together and the game shouldn't be too challenging for you.

Story/Narrative
[ ] Beautiful
[ ] Good
[ ] Decent
[x] Bad
[ ] Poor

Personal Note: For the fans of the XCOM series, especially from 2012 Enemy Unknown/Within, this will provide additional lore to how XCOM started and came about. Otherwise, if you're jumping into this blind, this might not appeal to you since the game offers mediocre gameplay. I played specifically for the story. While it does offer interesting setting and plot for the story, I don't believe it will appeal to everyone.

Replayability
[ ]Yes
[x] Kinda
[ ] None

Personal Note: Only reason to return to the story is for alternative dialogues or possible endings, but nothing else.

Final Note:
Overall, this game is just decent. Most people will probably say it's even bad since it doesn't offer any exciting or fascinating gameplay mechanics, graphics, and so on. However, since I am a fan of the XCOM series (I joined XCOM:Enemy Unknown), I had a sweet spot for this game and played it for the story. I enjoyed the lore, but the story itself began to confuse me towards the end and it wasn't that strong. If you're a stranger to XCOM or only religiously enjoy its turn-based gameplay, then you will most likely not be satisfied with this game. You're better off watching a walkthrough on YouTube if you are curious about the story/lore. However, if you're open minded and want a new experience, this game will provide.

This game has excellent graphics, sound, voice acting, a great story and ran without bugs but unfortunately the actual gameplay sucks. The game forces you to work with a squad and the AI is just stupid. They don't use cover effectively and will charge into the open for no reason. They constantly bitch about needing orders when you just want them to shut up and shoot the bad guys. The things they yell out during a fight are usually late or just wrong. They will get killed a lot and you have to keep redoing the same part of a mission over and over. The autosave is set to save at stupid places and you will have to keep picking up the same stuff on the path to get back to the fight you died at. I eventually just put it on the lowest difficulty so I could finish the story and be done with the game. I played most of the game with an Xbox controller but the rotor wheel to give commands is buggy and sometimes just won't point to what you want. It scrolls the full arc and overshoots a lot instead of just locking in on the options. I also frequently grabbed the mouse for fine aiming. Overall, I really like the XCOM series but I can't recommend this one as it just wasn't fun to play.

I really wanted to like this game, I really tried, but the game has more flaws than good. The story is somewhat considered to be canon, but it is very mediocre.

Pros:
- The Graphics are still great
- 60's Era
- Cutscenes look okay (Not pre-rendered)
- Multiple endings
- XCOM Base, or the Bureau is pretty detailed
- Carter is somewhat a memorable character

Now, this is where it gets interesting.

Cons:
- Controls are clunky
- Doesn't really fit in in the XCOM franchise
- Your squadmates' AI is so dumb, that you have to babysit them throghout the entire game.
- The story is pretty much hit or miss, it kinda makes no sense.
- There are no research in this game, no research for new armor, weapons or anything. You just find stuff from aliens and that's it.
- Bugs, Lots of bugs. Sometimes game breaking bugs so prepare quickloading
- Guns feel very weak and enemies as bullet sponges
- Pre rendered cutscenes' resolution are horrrendous. You can count the pixels on them.
- Side missions have no benefits at all, only to get XP for your agents and that's it. And in this game I didn't consider that pretty important
- Facial animations during dialogues are bad

I mean, at first it wasn't really a bad game, but as I progressed through the whole game, I just started to notice every flaws this game has. But it can be played through once.
Oh and do not buy this game at full price. Only on sale, or not. You don't miss out on that much.

I have mixed feelings about this game. I really like the retro-futurism theme and the whole XCOM series. But as it sells now for $20 it is hardly worth the money. Here's why:

- Controls are horrible, and the whole hide/run mechanics is much less easier to use than say, the one in Deus Ex.
- In the squad of three operatives, you are the one doing all the killing. Typical score of _every_ fight: you - 70 kills, agent A - 3, agent B - 0. Team abilities are of little use and take too long to recharge anyway.
- Your squad mates will get in your line of fire, block you from cover, and run into an open area with no shielding where they get shot - and then you have to go there too and revive them under fire.

- The story is very linear. There are side missions, where you get experience, and sometimes new weapons (but nothing unique), but they have no effect on the chain of events. The difference that dialogue choices make is superficial.
- As you progress with the game, the way fighting gets harder is quite unimaginative: you've defeated a Muton, now there's a Super-Muton, now Elite Muton, now two, now two and a bunch of smaller enemies.
- At the end on the enemy base it all becomes just grinding - go the next room, shoot some aliens, then the next room, and the next.

So after all, this is somewhat a disappointing experience. Get it only if there's a big bargain or if you like the theme very much.

Your squad AI is absolute garbage, they do nothing, I would leave a mission with 70 plus kills, the other two would have 15 combined. Squad AI also has a tendency to not stay where you order them, and routinely run out in open fire, this game is absolute garbage, glad I will never have to touch it again, I bought it for five dollars and regret every dollar.

Gameplay:
It is a 3rd person cover shooter. Love the combat role. And your character has a small tech tree. you to other compainions can be one of 4? classes with a small tech tree for abilities. Which you command on the field. Like deploy mine, deploy turrent, move here. Its great!

Play on the lower difficulty and it should be fun enough without overthinking the fights. Remember that the A.I. executes orders in the order they receive them.

The visuals are good and interesting. The small details and interactions between the characters and agents make the game much more enjoyable. The story is strange, but seems to have influences from Mass Effect and Half-life 2

XCOM Declassified is a bag of mixed feelings. On one had you have an interesting story, interesting characters, and a new interesting squad system. On the other you have poor A.I., fetch quests, and weapons that appear good on paper, but bad in practice.

The game is story based, and the level design is liner with few branching paths. You are given two squad mates to help with your missions and are faced with an array of different threats you must take out before moving on. As it's story centered, you play as the main character with special skills. Your squad mates have skills of their own which are very useful, just don't count on them to take care of themselves. The two 'helpers' often don't take cover, take cover next to enemies, fire at impossible to hit targets, and often take orders the wrong way.

Tip: They will execute orders in the order you give them, so if you need to get them safe, move them first. Otherwise they'll stand in the open using an ability and get themselves killed.

The Story is nice, and has a lot of moments of 'wow that looks awesome'. The actual level art is amazing in detail. You also face at the end some important choices that effect the 'end' of the game. (7 endings to be exact.)

Thing is...this is a shooter with 'slow down time' elements. The guns you get range from useful to not useful, and while some of them look AWESOME...you don't want them. Example A: Pistol of any time. Good damage, good range, and good on ammo. (Yes, you have ammo...every shot counts.) Sniper Rifle... 15 SHOTS...when enemies often are in the 80s for each mission. The levels are sure to give you lots of ammo, but even worse is how it aims and how long it takes to make the next shot. Lots of weapons have quirks to them that ruin the experience. Late game you get some hefty weapons, but they have limited ammo and don't do well in actual game play. You'll find the best weapons to be pistols, and any type of assault rifle.

You'll also find moving from cover to cover annoying, sometimes taking cover when you don't want to and other times being unable to move.

It's a great game for what it is and doesn't deserve so much hate...but mistakes were made when making this game and it's game play could have been so much better.

If you are looking to buy it, focus on the story not the game play, and don't expect a normal XCOM game...or for that matter a 'normal' game.

Bought this on launch and really tried to like it. I love all the X-Com games so this felt like a no-brainer, but I'm sorry to day it's garbage. I slogged through it for 12 hours, waiting for it to finally click and actually feel like I was playing X-Com, but it never did, so I bailed and have never felt in any way tempted to go back.

Recently popped up on Steam for some reason and reminded me what a steaming disappointment it was.

its ok. its not the best 3rd person shooter but its not the worst, its somewhere between average and worst. the difficulty like all xcom games is unfair so play it on the lowest difficulty and enjoy the story. steam wont let me post the full review here so hey. good for 6 hours.

Great game for x-com fans and alike.
In short for those who are familiar with x-com, this game offers a new perspective to play the game in action mode, but with cover mechanics, and the whole x-com scenario.
And it has a danm good story revealing a lot of lore about the game.
It is played in the past, when the alien invasion took place.
This game is awsome, only wish that we had more sequels using these mechanics.

The controls are a little wonky but the feel of combat is nice. It's a pretty standard tactical third person shooter. If you don't mind finnicky controls (It's primarily aiming your units at certain targets with the given reticle. Keyboard commands are perfectly fine), a mediocre story, and a good 1950s aesthetic, then it's definitely worth the price tag. Definitely don't buy the DLC though, it's garbage.

I don't get the hate that this game has received over the years. Sure it's not 100% polished but it runs like an old B-Rated Horror flick about aliens with a decent plot that pulls you through. Worth playing through.

I like the change in perspective from traditional XCOM tactics. However, this port has the controls feeling abnormally stiff for a K+M configuration. While I appreciate that there is real-time action mixed with some tactical planning for your squad mates, the other sections where it's a lot of pointless dialogue and cutscenes already wears itself thin before the prologue is over. It's just not why I play XCOM games and there seems to be a lot of it in this game. Previously, I had played this on my PS3, but had some performance issues and didn't like being forced to use a controller. I can see now that it wasn't the controller that was causing my issues, but rather that the game is just really blasé.

This game has so low reviews because the XCOM community understandably wants something closer to the originals for every game. This is not a bad thing but neither is this game. Albeit the game does feel almost half made? Like at times your actions and choices feel like they don't really matter in the later half of the game, but what the Bureau does very well is story telling and combat. If you like mass effect this game basically is mass effect with less content. Also you do need to kind of babysit your AI companions so they don't kill themselves. But the good aspects of this game counter balance not out weigh, counter balance the bad things, Probably should pick it up on sale but it is worth minimum one playthrough I'd say.

Don't buy this even in a sale. Its a massive rip off of Mass Effect without any of the stuff that made Mass Effect good. A complete waste of my time and the plot is unimaginative and doesn't follow any of the other XCOM games. avoid

One must realize that this game is a standalone from any other XCOM titles. This event happened during the 60s, aliens invade, and humans cry and die, gather themselves and kick some ass. There are a lot of mixed views about this this title, but I’m more on the plus side than the negative side of things.

I did enjoy the combat as it was similar in terms to Mass Effect as well as the dialogue options (circular dial). The combat also had some flaws at time like getting stuck along the wall when you honestly wanted to run away or your AI blocking you which prevented you from moving away from a grenade. Nothing too big in terms of combat being bad or AI being totally worthless; except the few times where AI just keep running into walls as if there was an option to go there (happened in the later missions). The AI’s main purpose is for their abilities not their tactical savviness or their ability to aim properly. Most games lack that in general anyways, hence you the protagonist do all the killing.

I enjoyed the story which I found out also has multiple endings. There are a lot of spoilers on the forums about how the story progresses, but I did enjoy it because a lot of games don’t approach a particular view on how it looks on itself. I’m not going to spoil it, but if you were to progress through the game you’ll notice the plot twists and the “WTF” on certain characters and their endings. There is some backstory for the characters, but not enough to be memorable or defining themselves better than other protagonist heroes/villains from other titles.

There also is no read-a-bunch-of-text-while-picking-your-options dialogue. Everyone is speaking to you either from the characters you meet or the individuals throughout the background/environment. The only reading I did was from notes to journals to computer monitors which described who was there, what they may have been doing at the time, or why they were put into that position; again nothing major just some nice reads.

The missions are linear and the backgrounds are at times very bland with no detail if you try to look past a barricade or through a broken wall/window. I found that to be a lazy design flaw. I’m not sure if they expected people to hurry up and finish the game or what, but I myself like to see a full-fledged background and not some “green grass” while some buildings are burning in front of me. Smaller areas such as buildings are alien fortifications were better in terms of environmental immersion since you were… inside!

There were a few aliens that resemble the XCOM franchise, such as sectoids, mutons, but a lot of the other aliens classified as “outsiders” are not that of from the other XCOM titles. Just some aliens with more 6 pack abs than a human. Having laser and plasma guns are nice and using them in a shooter versus a turn based game is enjoyable especially when you shoot the head off a sectoid. Oh, those are glorious moments in themselves. Some things such as the infection and what not are really not described throughout except it just being some infection; they honestly could have went more into detail about that as well.

Overall: 7/10 – Recommend. Due to some of the headaches I would recommend it on sale though.

fun fun fun, but not xcom like you expect, this is mix of tactical shooter in real time with pause ability to plan actions, its also adventure, alot of dialog, multiple answers, beautiful graphics, decent combat mechanics, ranking up, perks, side missions... drop dead gorgeous female officers who you interact with in your base
game have some learning curve, not to hard, and needs getting into, adjustment from classic xcom is to be made, from what i have seen so far, solid 7 / 10, not much managment, way too much simplified (example you pick up alien weapon you never seen before and you can use it instantly, you find blueprint for better backpack and you already have it, no crafting or resource gathering) xcom set in 1960-ish, whats not to like?

A lot of people seem to hate this game but honestly that is mostly due to the fact that it was titled as an XCOM game but doesn't use the traditional XCOM gameplay which made fans salty (for better or worse). If this was a different IP the reviews would me much better. The game is very well done and the combat is pretty refined, it is very similar to Mass Effect's battle system. A third-person shooter that you can slow firefights in to make a strategy such as moving teammates around for slanking, moving your sniper class into a corner to get that perfect headshot, using their abilities (Which there are many which range from pulse waves to artillery bombardments). Commanding your team around and utilizing their abilities is the staple of this game and its VERY fun. The story is pretty alright, just a prequel to the whole series that you can count as canon or non-canon. The music is also nice. The graphics and level design are very good especially for their time. The only real issue I have with this game is that your teammates are just random agents you don't really talk to that you can switch in and out for other classes, which kind of makes the partners very boring, as if you really were hanging out with an NPC in real life. Many RPG's have set characters for their games for a party, some you can switch in and out. But they also give personality to all their characters and make you care for them. William Carter, the main character is very interesting but the story would have been better with some more interesting companions, albeit Wrex from Mass Effect or whatever, personality makes the character.

8/10
