POSITIVES
+ sehr stimmiger gaelischer Gesang

- lineare Dialoge ohne jegliche Einflussmöglichkeiten in Gesprächen

FAZIT

I can't write a full review for this game, however because I hit a bugged puzzle(Magnar tower bell puzzle, so get ready to save like crazy) and I will die on the hill that the second a bug that requires me load and lose a ton of progress is just not something that should be tolerated and especially one that completely blocks progress in the game and isn't something that should be tolerated. There's several other bugs alongside this one, too.
I was super excited to finally play this game but honestly, the bugs really bring it down. There's also a lot of lag(no, my computer isn't the issue, it's the game) and jank, but that's really just a cherry on the top.

However, it's still a very good and interesting RPG 'dungeon crawler'. Tonnes of puzzles to think your way though (maybe a few too many really, but you can always use the inbuilt 'cheat spell' to bypass them, something I only had to do about 3 times).
Fights are interesting too, turn-based and with quite a bit of variety.
Graphics, when not stuttering, are beautiful. Sounds are amazing and this game features one of the most stunning soundtracks, complete with dozens of actual songs, that I've ever heard.
Recommended.

Gameplay 8/10 - This game is essentially a Puzzle Game. The Combat / Story / Dungeons are challenging enough to keep you hooked.
Story 7/10 - Nothing out of the ordinary with the story plot. Typical Heroic Adventures and you will encounter Standard NPC Characters you expect from a Fantasy Game. Carrots. Cabbages. Potatoes.
World Design 9/10 - I love the beautiful world magically crafted to have you feel so immersed in the game. The maze and dungeon can get confusing at times and alot of back tracking is required, but it's like taking a stroll in your favorite garden in a brezzy morning.
Music 10/10 - The songs and music in this game is sublime. It goes so well in each stage of the game that you will hum along with them.
I bought it during the Steam Sale, but it's worth the full price in my 70 hours of game play. I will probably play through it a second time to go for all the side quest I missed.

Then there's the puzzles. They start out fun and there's a nice balance between combat and stopping for puzzles. But as the game goes on the puzzles begin to outnumber the battles, and sadly they become increasingly obtuse to the point it's no longer fun.
Since I'm not inclined to spend my time looking up solutions on the Internet, or toggling on a song I'm going to have to button mash the rest of the game to solve them for me, I had to give it up and I just can't recommend the game to any but the most devoted puzzle spergs.

- party based action point and tactical positioning combat system
- lots of puzzles (from easy to tough), sometimes too many actually
- some backtracking if you are a completionist
- more than 60h of gameplay
All in all its still quite enjoyable and unique RPG. I think it has not much in common with the original Bards Tale games, but that was not a problem for me.

The variety in enemies and their abilities keeps the combat tactical and engaging for more than just the early game, sometimes requiring you to swap out equipment or skills.
And the game has an excellent soundtrack.

It is very faithfull to the source material, a worthy 4th entry to the series. There are things in this game that made me go, I always wanted to see this (since I played the first game back in 85).
The music is the best thing about it though, really worthy of a game called the BARDS tale.
Loved the game from start to finish. Thank you Brian Fargo for keeping at the Tale for all theese decades.

Yes, the game was, is and probably still will be a buggy mess. But if you overlook some of it's shortcomings, you will enjoy it greatly. I nearly finished the original BT4 before the more polished and optimised DC came out and I replayed the game till the ending while having great deal of fun. The game has charming atmosphere and very enjoyable combat.
The combat starts somewhat bland but will only get better with new characters, skills, equipment and enemies. There is more than one way how to build your party members and exploit some of their abilities to create powerful combos.
Story was a bit on the weak side, but I never got to play the trilogy before...my loss.
Finally, puzzles. Let's just say that none of them made me ragequit the game and most of them were enjoyable enough, albeit unnecessary difficult. I had to look up for a solution for one or two near the endgame, but other than that, I usually got through them with trial and error.
Compared to other modern titles like Vaporum, Operencia, StarCrawlers, LoGII, M&MX, this game is on par, maybe slightly better value. Go get it.

Another thing they could do is character class mastery expansions. It would help make the game worth beating, as you max out your class well before the end of the game.
That said, the story is good and there's lots of exploration to be had.

Bigges Problem are in my opinion the grafics with look like from 2000.
Bugs are minior and in the whole playtime so gar only two crashes.

I especially fell in love with exploration. Every area you go to is also like a little puzzle. You will not be able to explore it fully until you gain certain abilities, figure out some secrets, notice certain details. There are treasures waiting for you behind mysterious rune gates and all you need to do is figure out how to make them open for you. And the game does not hold your hand here at all - not everything is a quest in your journal or a marker on you map. But the world itself invites you to discover its secrets and be observant.
The various puzzles you meet are mostly not particularly challenging but quite enjoyable to solve nonetheless.
Combat is nice and tactical. And you can always mix it up by changing your party if you get bored with a particular set of skills and related strategies. Wanna try going around with six bards now and see what hell they can raise? You certainly can :). Your party members (even those you create yourself, not only the pre-made ones you meet) all have personalities, things to say. They interact with each other and comment on your travels. Crux is my personal favourite.
Story is quite nice and the many big and small references to the original trilogy are just lovely. I am still laughing at 99 waves of 4 Berserkers each. That said, it is NOT a story of player choice, you will not be shaping it and it will not react to your decisions. Because, well, you make practicaly no decisions in it.
And as we are talking about the 'Bard's Tale', let me comment on the music. It can get repetitive if you are staying in one spot for a very long time but that's my only complaint. Music is very cool, bardish, hummable, fitting to the general mood of each area and sometimes it gets stuck in your head.

To start off, for people who think of trying it out(buying it) I am here to tell you that you, YOU SHOULD NOT WORRY ABOUT BUYING IT AND NOT BEING ABLE GET A REFUND!!!!! It won`t take longer then 90 minutes for you to realize if its a game for you or not.
WHAT I LIKE:
-Combat system : simple, easy to understand
-Puzzles : super fun, always makes you feel awesome once you figure a harder puzzle. Also you cannot cheat in this game as finding guides for some of the optional puzzles are impossible as.... well yeah, they don`t exist as this game does not have a community(as in more then 10 people).
-Story : just a classic normal story with no bs.
-NOT SURE HOW TO CALL THIS BUT THE ART STYLE IS AWESOME( scenery, characters, the skill tree, the leaf that i saw in game... pretty much 10/10 in this)
-The voice acting : cannot add anything here but in this also perfect.
-music: oh boy...yeah... good
THINGS THAT I DON`T LIKE(more of things you should be aware of before buying)
- BUGS, LOTS OF THEM. Over the realese most of the huge bugs got fixed, but... that`s all you get, it`s buggy as shit, crashes often, the game is no longer supported as well, meaning no more fixes.
-Easily breakable,if you read the skills and items and all that bs, you`ll become op, and doing that would make combat practicly non existant, even if you`re playing on the hardest combat difficulty.
- fairly short, took me about around 22 hours to complete the whole game
To end off, i want to say, this game, totally not for everyone, only us retars ( if ya kno wha am sain).
This is a hidden gem for some, and for others - garbage.
To end off this review, that noone is gonna read, YEAH I PLAYED THIS GAME HIGH AND IT WAS FCKING AWESOME, AND THEN 1 YEAR LATER I FINISHED IT AGAIN HIGH AND IT WAS AWESOME AGAIN.
But take it with a grain of salt, as I was high
8/10
Life is meaningless... but also is death, so don`t die, no reason to ;D

PROS: Lots of gameplay (55 hours at the moment, with some quests and DLC unfinished).
Unique combat system with opportunity (total melee and skill actions per turn for a party, though it can be extended in many ways)
Lots of side quests, and while the main quest and opening of new areas is linear, there are several parts where you can do things in the order of your choice
Fair amount of lore, ~30 pages or so of books and notes to pick up (that I found, at least), dozens of NPCS that will tell you their life story, and dozens more ghosts you can bother for their life stories if inclined to do so.
Unique musical score*
Decent skill/build customization within individual classes
Many puzzles but also an ability (has to be enabled in gameplay options) to bypass most of them if they get tedious after a while. Which they do, at least for me, after the 4th or 5th round of fairy bird golf, 15th set of stones to push around in a certain order, and 30th cogwheel doorway.
NEUTRAL:
Hope you like the theme song, because the NPCs will sing it over and over.
Music files sometimes play in odd places...more than once I heard joyous chanting and Christmas caroling in and around a temple full of dead priests and undead.
Enemies do not respawn (though new encounters appear in certain areas as the story progresses), so there is a finite amount of xp/gold/loot to be gained. However, if you fully explore and do everything, it's far more than enough to complete most builds and get all the gold you need.
The overall storyline is average, not great, not horrible. The badd peopl are coming and only four arbitrarily selected people can stop them.
You'll probably have to look online to find where some things are or how to do certain quests. You'll definitely have to look online to find the item offerings for the zodiac codewheel, which explicitly requires the use of an online item codex and website to match the two pictures and the moon.
CONS:
Only four classes, and the opportunity system further restricts available builds (can't be melee-heavy). Sub-classes alleviate this somewhat, though they are limited as well, both in number and by the four-skill combat limit (also a major gripe--each character can only ever have four skills (+1 from trinket and movement) loaded for use in combat at one time. It's more of an annoyance than a gameplay challenge. Only a couple bosses or enemy types really require a change in strategy to necessitate switching skills.
Turning off the music is insufficient to stop the singing in a lot of areas.
Relatively few enemy types--mainly Fatherite cultists or skeletons of various class/levels. Several unique boss encounters, though.
While there's an option to switch between grid-based movement and free movement, grid-based is much faster but difficult to control since it's not a simple flat square grid. Changing to grid-based gives an advantage in getting through some traps due to the speed. Standard movement is much slower, and also gets stuck somewhat easily on anything--there's no jumping, falling, or climbing over the smallest of obstacles without specifically a ladder or grappling hook node.
Inventory space is limited and bothersome to maneuver. It's not a problem in the beginning, where you don't get much loot, but for whatever reason, most higher level encounters drop 2-3 weapons or armor per fight, resulting in enough extra crap to fill not only your own inventory but deplete the gold from every merchant in the game.
Overall it's a good game and the pros outweigh the cons. I got the Director's Cut on sale for $15, which was more than worth it's cost. I'm not sure how much it differs from the standard version, though. It does come with the Haernhold DLC.
*Hope you like yodeling

This... isn't quite that.
There's the first-person dungeon crawling, but it's more akin to modern RPGs where sure, you create your starter character who is permanently a member of your party, but then you have to team up with pre-generated characters along the way, who leave when their business with you is done. What, you were expecting to create a half-dozen custom characters with the classes YOU want and develop them into a crew of ultimate asskickers as you conquer one dungeon after another? Hahahaha... no.
To be fair, this game isn't horrible at what it does, laboring to be a more story-oriented first-person dungeon crawl than usual. (It needs less trap options, though, like when it lets you buy a weapon in a store, only for you to find a chest with a superior version of that weapon literally two minutes later.)
But it's not a Bard's Tale game as I remember them, and that's what I was in the mood for when I bought it.

the game can be won multiple ways.. this game is a thinkers game, how to best draw the enemies towards me, what to hit and with what, taking out enemies correctly is crucial.. strongest armor is not always the best, weapons matching to skills is critical.. the strategy layers are deep and thought-provoking.. every battle is just a bit different, skeletons can be hell(just wont stay dead).. kill the necro fast
what makes this game is the combat.. it has a good story/not great.. the music and voice acting is nice/ everything goes well with the atmosphere.. the game is very linear, not a bad thing, just not a open world.. that being said i have 300+ hours as of this review.. and will go higher

I'm a fan of many RPGs from old school BG, to Modern games like the Witcher ,and tactical games like Wastleland 2. IF you want something that shakes up the formula don't be turned off to try this. First game that has hooked me in for some time. The teething issues like many other games upon release have largely been resolved.

If you're a fan of turn based RPG's with an old school approach to design I think Bards Tale 4 is worth your time and money, it's been a while since I've had this much fun in a video game.

Not a perfect game by all means it had its issues. Sometimes the targeting in combat could be a bit wonky and sometimes if you try to cast too many abilities in a row the game would take a little while to think things through.
But all in all if you enjoy turn-based combat, exploration and some damn fine music, I would recommend the game. Good stuff.

But it has a number of dire flaws -- too tight inventory, needlessly restrictive in-combat skill selection, arduous travel on confusing maps -- that are stupefyingly incongruous within a (as I must insist) great game. What bizarre combination of choices, blunders, and internal architecture could have led to such a thing? It's akin to a magnificent house... with a garage on its roof. A woman with a lovely pair of breasts... on the soles of her feet. A brilliant surgeon... who loves to use PCP.
I'm amusing myself with the metaphors, so I could go on, but readers both patient and impatient surely get my point: buy at a steep discount, and then enjoy thoroughly.

If you want to complete this game - please understand that it's a chore.
Why? I'll be honest - I really liked The Bard's Tale IV during the first ~20 hours. Turn combat system was exactly what I wanted and expected, story was decent enough, character progression still existed, puzzles were new, there wasn't much backtracking and many bugs.
But this game is 65 hours long.
And those positive feelings I had were quickly replaced by a sense of doing actual work to progress. The biggest issue for me were the puzzles. There are few types of them, but the problem is that they're being thrown at the player literally every few minutes. For 65 hours! In a turn based combat rpg! And it's even worse during the last dungeon which consists only of puzzles.
Speaking of the last dungeon - fight with the final boss of the game is a joke. I had dozens (seriously) of way harder fights with random groups of enemies, even right before this boss. Such a disappointment after all this [strike]time[/strike] work put into the game.
The third major problem with this title is a repetitive combat. You stop getting any new enemies halfway through the game, and unfortunately the more powerful your characters are - the longer the combat tends to be. Why? Because the game has huge problems calculating all the effects applied on the enemies by your party. With few poison/fire/stun effects you're gonna get around 10 seconds freezes in combat, during which engine tries to catch up with what you've just done to the enemy. So it makes the boring fights in the second half of the game even longer - wonderful isn't it?
This would be good 30-35 hours title, especially that quaility of quests absolutely doesn't justify making it any longer. Unfortunately devs chose the route of artificially extending it by reusing assets and incorporating tons of backtracking. I can't agree with this kind of practice.

never had any crash issues, ran smooth.
the one thing i did come across is there are a few places to get hung up on the terrain, but always wiggled free, sometimes took a bit of doing to find the sweet spot to escape it, but never made me reload.

The controls and gameplay are very relax and not overly complicated. All of the negative reviews I read for this game basically convinced me BT4 is something I’d like, and I wasn’t disappointed. Yes you can’t jump, Yes it’s turnbased, Yes the crafting system is simple, Yes I will buy your game.
My only complaint is the weak story. The events aren’t held together very well and the voice acting doesn’t help its cause. However, most of the humor is spot on and I still get attached to the characters.
Overall this is a great game for the older generation that doesn’t take itself too seriously and is very relaxing to play. *Bonus points for the game’s incredible music!*

Finally a solid turn(hex)-based RPG. The game can also be played within real-time, but it is nice to have the option. After Legend of Grimrock I've lost hope I'll see any title that could have at least some climate like Ultima Underworld, Realms of Arkania or old Might&Magic series. Fortunately this game has it. The content is quite large , with nice story and melodies, interesting combat and quite large spectrum of skills. The graphic is somewhat disputing. On one had the world itself is wonderful, as well as cut-scenes, on the other the models are quite clunky, especially the females. It looked like the creator hasn't met any beautiful human in his life. I'm also having some problems with the lore. Sure every game can think for itself, but this purple hairless thing is a dwarf? And this ugly, greenskin is an elf?
Also be warned that although any true RPG usually has some puzzles, here that becomes extreme. Almost everything here is a puzzle, even combat in some way. Fortunately there is a melody that resolves most of those.
Well it is nice to have the Linux port, but either the port or game itself suffers from problems. The player can get stuck sometimes, some cut-scenes glitch, some quests can not trigger events, and so on. Fortunately that can usually be resolved by coming back to previous save slot.
Anyway the game is unique and worth playing.

Best 112 Hours I spent lately.
Are there still bugs? Yeah, a few. The only one that really is obnoxious though is if your controller switches off during play you will not be able to resume using it (thumbstick click menus don't work anymore.) This breaks all your savegames from that point on. So I suggest reloading from a point before that happened and of course: Save often, save early...

Well, I'm here to say that this is still insanely disappointing. It's a shame, because inXile has done some incredible work in the past, but this game is a monster to get to run without technical issues, and don't even bother if you play games at higher than than 60hz refresh rate. I've got a 9900k and 1080ti and get like 50fps in the very first area when the game starts (with a 144hz monitor, it just looks absolutely horrid). I have the Xbox Game Pass, so I'm thinking I may give it a look on console, since I'm sure it's locked to 30fps and would probably look just fine on a TV. But as a PC game, this is one of the most shockingly disappointing releases I've had the misfortune of buying in the last few years.
Mileage may vary; if you're a die-hard dungeon crawler fan, I say grab it on sale and hope that it works for you. As I said, gameplay seems fun, but it's a graphical and technical mess for me personally. Hard to enjoy the gameplay when the game doesn't play.

Bar's Tale IV does some things really well, and some things are unbelievably bad. I'll list only the ones that really impressed me in a good or a bad way.
Pros:
- Great visual style and graphics overall, despite the game being a rather budget product
- Amazing music/songs and pretty good voice-overs
- Atmosphere is definitely there thanks to visuals and sound
- Many puzzles are really cleverly done and fun to solve
- Nobody is holding your hand (you can even chose to disable quest markers and whatnot)
Cons:
- Horrible UI, especially in battles (at time it's really hard to select a character you want - clickable area doesn't correspond to the character's model)
- Battles with common enemies quickly become repetitive
- The same goes with some puzzles
- Loot is rather limited: later in the game you find the same items, but with better stats

The voice acting is so odd and hilarious. Could not stop laughing anytime the main character would say “we are all going to die!.” On top of that the rest of the game is so full of charm and goofy ness. Game play is pretty fun once you get a hang of it and I really liked the blend of puzzles in it.
I am very glad I have this game a second chance even though it is a bit buggy and ugly at times. Underneath is a charming RPG that is full of fun.

First the good. The graphics and sound on this are amazing, some of the best music/visuals I've ever heard or seen. The voice acting is well done, as is the integration of songs throughout the game.
Now the bad. This game is FULL of bugs. I've had numerous crashed to desktops, glitches, pauses, etc. I've had skills on my hot-bar just disappear for no reason. If that isn't bad enough, I've had actual enemies disappear in combat, which left me sitting there trying to figure out why the battle wasn't over yet. During combat, I've had long pauses where nothing happens for several seconds, without any obvious reason. There were graphical glitches where things from combat, like special powers, carried over to exploration, and the only way to remove them was to reload the game.
My biggest complaint however, is the sheer amount of riddles/puzzles/mazes in this game. The entire game world, including towns, are laid out like mazes. I understand this might harken back to the original Bard's Tale games, but after a while, it just gets way too tedious. Every town, every area, is like a maze you have to explore. On top of that, you will constantly be returning to areas over and over to unlock something that you find earlier in the game, but will not be able to solve until much later in the game. It really interrupts the flow. If i had to put a number on it, I'd say this game is 80% puzzles/riddles, and about 20% combat. Some of the puzzles are enjoyable the first few times, but when you're on the same type of puzzle for the thousandths time, it's just way too much.
I had high hopes for this game, and the first few hours of play are enjoyable and a bit nostalgic, but after a while the game just gets to be more of a chore than fun.

Bard's Tale IV is essentially a reboot of a trilogy of games for the Apple Lisa, with a port to the Commodore 64. I've played a little bit of a remaster of the first game, and it's so mind-boggling the difference in what was thought to be a game then, and what is now. Not just in technology, but in the very idea of what a game is.
This game tells the tale of a band of heroes saving the world -- standard fare. It's not a nuanced story, but it is a lovingly told one. The developers of this game really had a care for this world they were working in.
And the music! The music, friends! I have seldom loved videogame music this much. Live singers singing Gaelic songs of old. What a mood!
Well, that's all well and good, but now for the downsides.
The controls are wonky, especially in combat. You'll get used to them, but it's pretty annoying, especially when you mess up.
The 3D models are lacking in liveliness, approaching the uncanny valley close-up. Just don't look, and you'll be fine.
The game froze a number of times for unknown reasons.
And most importantly, there is a game-breaking bug in one dungeon that allows you to use a key on an a door that takes you upstairs. But you need that key to get further in, and it doesn't respawn. Beware.
Still, I would recommend this game to anyone interested in a exploring a beautifully crafted world with gorgeous music and friendly NPCs. I poured 80 easy hours into this game.

There are stones that relate to a physical code wheel you get with the game. The digital copy has a printable construction kit for making the code wheel and there is a link to an online, automated version - which makes the whole copy protection style endeavour pointless. What none of these resources even mention is what the numbers this code wheel kicks out refer to. Normally it would be manual or hard copy lore book. The stones take objects, not numbers or words.
You meet your first puzzle statue before it is possible to find the IN GAME book that lists items and their corresponding number. So, unless you ignore the glowing, singing interactable statue when you first pass it - you have no chance of solving the puzzle and no indication you are not just being dumb.
In other annoyances... it is DISTURBINGLY EASY to get stuck in bits of scenery. There is a point where you first return from the sewers and can sneak passed the guards by hugging the wall. Hug it too closely and you get locked in place. This has happened about two dozen times to me in just shy of 30 hours of play.
The dialogue is of the 'select the top option and work through the list' variety. No options (so far) to change your direction in the story other than choosing the composition of your party.
Which is another issue. You can make mercenaries to compliment your team and fill in the holes. However, you only get extra lots as you get new NPC companions. These companions are, for the most part, LOCKED into your party. I didn't want to play a bard, the default, because fuck bards. SO I made a tank fighter.
You GET a tank character early on. And a thief and a mage. I wanted to swap out my second fighter for a bard to round out my party. You can't. You can only swap out your main character. Honestly it was just an exercise in frustration and the entire mercenary system should be scrapped given how pointless it is.
Skill progression is both limited and frustrating as all hell. You must routinely track back to the adventurers guild to unlock the next tier of skills for each character, but the 'board' who permit you to advance will bitch at you for not completing enough tasks... even though you need to go talk to them to unlock the next tier for the character who is trailing XP.
There simply is no need for this added faff. It's busy work that just gets in the way of advancing your character.
Your path is constantly blocked by a few barrels or crates... stuff you smash in other parts of the world, meaning navigation is horrible. Also.... who takes out a cabbage from a crate by exploding the crate?
There is a vast array of recipes for food, but the only variation is the amount of health they replenish, making most pointless.
You need to unlock skills to put on new boots.
Bows are offhand weapons. Knives are not.
Sometimes bad guys spot you around corners and attack you. Other times you can sneak within a few feet. Sometimes you charge the bad guys, but the game stalls and then they just attack you as if you walked up casually singing at the top of your lungs.
There is an option to consume luck stones (save points) for xp. I tried it once. The icon for the consumed luckstone remains on your map. Later in the game you are hunting for a save point only to find the map is no longer reliable.
Some of these seem minor, but these are just the ones still floating in my head. There are many, many more that are just as frustrating, and whilst most are minor they all build up so that you are no longer playing the game. You are fighting it. My game crashed about 10 minutes after my last save point but I'd done a fair bit in that time and...
I'm done. I have no desire to reload and play anymore. You might have a greater tolerance for the game... but I personallly can't recommend it.
And all the characters look like they are carved out of a breed of potato genetically modified to be extra ugly.

This game is really impressive. I think you could say this is almost like Elder Scrolls in that they took a concept from the 80s, updated it for the 2000s, and did a great job. You have a vibrant world with a lot to do in the first hour, a ton of quests, battles that appear but you have to consider each one and avoid a couple of them, and you start to get the idea.
The combat here is tactical and turn-based. There’s a decent amount of puzzles already in that first hour. I loved my time with this one. I like the feeling that there’s a ton to do in the world and exploration pays off. There’s a few nitpicks like a code wheel you have to go to a website to get, which is odd, but overall… Yeah, I like this.
This is great for fans of old school games, and people who want to get that immersive feeling into a fantasy game. Fans of Elder Scrolls will want to check this out if you like the combat on screen. And a special bonus, at least for me, I got Bards Tale Trilogy as well. Note though, that’s an updated version of 80s games, which is still… going to be a bit rough. But additional content is never a bad thing, and this is a series where you don’t have to play the previous game, but it’s nice to have that too.

And then there is the terrible map design. The icons in the map don't always display properly and are too small to always see clearly. The passages just end without any graphic indication on the map so you are constantly going down the same passages. Most games have an indication of where the boundries are but not here. And for a game so heavily dependent on going back and forth there is no way to mark your map so its very difficult to make your back to an area you have been to before. Very hard to find it. And you just get so tired of wandering around the same places over and over and over again. I finally gave up about half way thru. There are plenty other titles vying for my attention.

The primary offense is that, while you can learn new active abilities as you level up, you can only have 4 readied at any given time, severely limiting the actions available to your characters during combat. What's worse, if you have an item that grants you an ability, that ability takes up one of your 4 precious ability slots, meaning that's one fewer of your character's abilities that is available. Shockingly poor design, seemingly deliberately designed to make the game less fun. The only justification I can see for it is to limit the number of on-screen options available so that the interface is streamlined for console users, but c'mon.
Secondarily, the Bard class specifically is poorly designed, because they are are reliant on crafted items (alcohol) to be able to use their bard-song abilities. I'm someone who doesn't particularly enjoy crafting in RPGs, and requiring this class to use these items means having a bard requires a lot more grinding to make sure you have enough booze stocked. What's more, the bard has to have a special item equipped in their trinket slot to be able to use alcohol (i.e. use their basic class abilities), further limiting their options in combat.
A lot of work obviously went into this, and there are a number of things to like, but I can't remember the last time a game with such good fundamentals and potential committed such grievous own-goals in its implementation.

Graphics - Bad. Looks about the same as Morrowind, which came out almost 2 decades earlier.
Performance - Bad. And I really don't understand why (see graphics above). Why does the game lag when I enter each room? Why does it sometimes take 5s for my actions to register? Crashed 3 times in 10hrs (~ every 3hrs)
UI - Bad. Very clunky. Sometimes it will take multiple clicks for to select the correct item. Definitely feels like it was designed 20 years ago. Inventory management is a pain. Selecting items is a pain. The map doesn't even zoom out all the way.
Game play - Bad. It's just not fun. The balance and tuning is downright perplexing. Sometimes the best option for a fight is for one of your characters to sit there and do nothing? Why doesn't each character get a turn? Why is the AI so bad? Playing on higher difficulties it mostly just becomes a RNG of whether the AI will focus fire or not.
Story - Bad. I've been playing for 10hrs and I'm still not quite sure what the plot is. But at least they put in a lot of corny joke banter.
Music - Good. Each region has an excellent soundtrack.
Overall - I think I would have enjoyed this more if I'd just bought the soundtrack. This game feels like it was made 15 years ago, scrapped as not good enough, and then brought back to life and sold at full price with no changes.
