Die Story ist geil wie eh und jeh...
Das Kampfsystem funktioniert so einigermaßen...
Con...

So viele Entscheidungen einfach klasse.
Danke für das Spiel.

In TBS 3 I keep having bugs and crashes that make me replay long fights. You have the option to continue fights for more renown and items and therefore it gets harder AND takes much more time. Having to redo those fights again and again is annoying. I stopped playing for now, as it just kills the joy.
STOIC needs to plan for more QC and bug fixing and after release support.
Oh ... and some things that happened in TBS 2 aren't addressed or are just different/changed in the third installment. Horse lady Canary is probably the most prominent example.

Never ending loading screen
Game crash after combat
Game crash during save load
Save lost after load crash
Character soft locks into place after taking an action
Skill range UI showing the wrong range in which the character can hit.
While doing extensive measures as listed in the troubleshoot thread, such as downloading 3rd party app, disabling steam cloud save does stablize the game a bit, I've lost my sanity from losing my progression and it's bugged UI.
My banner has been thrown onto the ground in the admis of darkness. My men will transcend onto the realm of Youtube where they will finish their journey and perhaps with an ending they deserve.

Also there are wrong tooltips and/or (MAJOR) bugs and the item-interface in the hero selection is straight up bad.
Also this trilogy is heavily overpriced. I bought it on sale and still feel like i paid too much.
If i had known what this game is like, i'd never bought it.
(This review is the same for every game of this trilogy since it's basically one game)

The Banner Saga as a whole though is a piece of storytelling art. The world and its lore are surprisingly detailed and the characters develop (and sometimes perish) in unexpected and interesting ways. The Banner Saga is probably most successful in that it has managed to create a harsh and unforgiving world that still feels beautiful and worth saving.

My last review of the Banner Saga:
The conclusion is upon us, and the game delieverd and exceeded any expectations I had , that a boon due to just the massive amount of stakes, world and character building , choice consideration , the game had to make as to not feel disingenuous or cheap to the players that started from the first two games. The game delivers both in story and gameplay innovation once more building upon the previous games.
Story:
This game made me double guess my self over and over , analyze to try and see the ramifications of my words prior to uttering them , drawing routes in my mind , all this to survive through the harsh lands of the world in search for a way to stop it from ending. The story welcomes a lot of new stuff that I didn't expect, from dropping the traveling early on from one caravan, to the time constraints that dictate who lives and who dies on this apocalypse, to the way they make you feel that every single tiny choice throughout the 3 games had some weight to it. This game delivers in spades. The story itself has like 5 endings or so , but each one of them takes also into consideration the lives of the lost.
Gameplay
A few new things were added , like more objective based combat, wave combat when facing the new threat, reinforcements , lightning call, nothing to ambitious , but it was the right choice as to not off put veteran players.
This time around I really felt the wounds mounting on some of the later parts of the game and it was really challenging to overcome , especially in my first run that I made Iron-man style ( no save-scumming , no losing in combat ever). On the last chapter , I was tempted to reload a save , but I couldn't with how far I had gotten.
Story
The story itself has a lot of common themes with the past ones , except that this one explores more the relationships one forms , be it loved ones, the people that depend on you, comrades, allies and friends.
They also talk more about the nature of life and forgiving, while exploring the more soft side of the dredge.
There are some very emotional moments in the game , in various routes of the story I felt there was something for each one that made it worth exploring.
Overall , I think this game is the conclusion this saga deserves , there is no other series of games that tell a story of epic proportions as masterfully as the Banner Saga, and ultimately it will live as one of my favorite game series of all time. As I finish writing this , I urge you to try out the whole series rather than starting from this one, to live , to grieve, to fail , to conquer , all that this world has to give, to write those experiences you and your clan lived while travelling on the road away from certain damnation.

This game is meant to be played after its predecessors, or the events that happen will simply fall flat (without the player having the agency of shaping the world)
Mass Effect trilogy failed and so did this one
For a very different reason tho: the gameplay loop simply cannot be stretched over three games
And much like Game of Thrones, what made the first game/season so charming was how little it had to do with magic
The higher stakes of this game simply kill the intimacy the first one established
The positive note here is that it is more rememberable than the second game

A couple terrible bugs aside, its the same quality banner saga gameplay you got in the previous titles with an even larger variety in characters. Solid systems, solid narrative (assuming you get to see it instead of a green screen). I WANT to recommend this game, but the severity of the bugs that exist is too much.

As much as I like the unique story and characters, I dont really understand how the 3rd game has this loading screen crash issue. I know the developers know about this as they mention that its very hard to pin point the bug/crash problems but what I dont understand is how, to my understanding, is that the coding is almost identical to the BS2 ( with a few differences ) and yet, this game crashes like no tomorrow while I did not even get 1 crash in BS2.
Its not game breaking but jesus, I have to restart my fights like 5+. And because this game doesnt have a fast forward mechanic, you have to replay through the entire scenario before the fights. I know giving a negative review is bad for developers but its been 3 years ( release in 2018 ) and still this isnt patch or fixed or give an alternative solution
Still a banger of a game and story though

The overwhelming tone of despair is honestly its greatest selling point, as few characters get more than the slightest amount of development, and the combat can certainly get rote by the end of the first game, yet alone the third. However, if you stick with it, there are certainly magnificent moments to be experienced, made all the more memorable by a haunting and masterful soundtrack.
I believe the best possible experience is playing through all three games back-to-back-to-back. It results in a unified story that only gets more dire as time goes on.
Stoic made something with a spark of brilliance here, and I hope they get the chance to truly flourish with their next work.
A story worth telling.

Great art and storytelling. 8.5/10
The story is filled with mystery and it keeps you hooked to figure out what happens next. As usual, choices really matter and it's very hard to predict the consequences of your actions.
Combat flow is very similar with the other two titles, but there are more special abilities and tactical choices.
It's way less stable than the previous sagas. Crashed multiple times and there seems to be a CPU leak somewhere. Every now and then my CPU usage spikes to 100% and the FPS drops for couple of minutes.
The art & sound are in the same style and very well delivered.

There are 4 years between the first and the final games and this is probably a proper tempo to play them.
Previous chapters was kinda of slow as well but there were much more interesting encounters and locations — and there were no such amount of useless survival fights. It felt like adventure, not turn-based tactics. After all if you are puting more fights in a game probably it would be a good idea to have a bunch of new units, tactics, skills — and they added fistful but it is simply not enough even for an add-on.
Despite of that it's good old Banner Saga with beatiful art (probably the most strong side of all games), music and characters which we are used to.
Personally I did not like the plot very much since it changes from unpredictable, unsuaul and almost realistic (do not forget — gods are dead!) to a generic fantasy where magic plays the most important role. Oookay and now let's save the world!
As for me the most dissappointing thing in the whole series was the world map. I studied each location but what's the point of such a lore if you never had a chance to visit the place? We just stuck in Arberang trying to intrigue and on the other hand going to the some kind of underworld to fix things out.
I have a bug where character abilities won't work. I was told that it was a known bug and that they were working on. After another emailing asking about game support the same day, I was told it was a minor bug and the game was stable right now so they won't fix it. So not only was I lied to, but the problem won't be fixed.
Problem is it's not a minor bug and makes the game unplayable when characters abilities randomly won't work.
It's also at least two years old and in all this time they haven't fixed it. So they either don't know how or don't care.
The response was pretty shocking, and the first time I have encountered an indie company unwilling to help. After three emails they stopped responding to me, after telling me in the forum they would be happy to discuss further.
I enjoyed the first 2 games and was looking forward to finishing this one, but the customer support has been horrible and I won't support any further games from them.

But seeing as Banner Saga is just one big game, how does it hold up as a finale?
Well... It holds up as a finale... But it's not very good. See, the original had well-pronounced breaks from the strain of the Apocalypse. There always were some elements of calm, some stretches of relatively untroubled march, allowing the player an emotional reprieve. Here it's just constant pressure - even, blunt, and tiresome. That fits the theme appropriately, but it could at least try and provide some moments to ease the tension. That's not the case though. There's a reason why both times that I played it, I finished it in a single day. Because I knew I wouldn't really want to go back to it unless I finish it.
Another problem is... Characters no longer matter. Firstly, there's a ton of them now, and new faces keep coming without really being developed (even as little as it used to be), and secondly, so much is going on, actors get way less time in the spotlight. And there's basically no closure.
Banner Saga 3 also forfeits another thing out of earlier games: the aesthetic of journey. Yes, the world was being broken, but you could still observe its beauty as your caravan walked through its vast spaces. Now one character group gets holed up in the city and is therefore stationary, the other ventures into the tainted and twisted world of darkness... Which is well drawn... But looks exactly like any other popular culture tainted and twised world of darkness.
All of it combined makes the entire experience more generic than it could be. Which is sad.
But the saga is complete. Which is great.

Note: Good women in this game. Faves being Oddleif, Faulka and Castaway. Wanted to throttle Juno and the other Valka but wanting to throttle them was good too. Altogether good variety in personalities and looks. Best friends, companions, major jerks. They felt like people. Games writers sometimes forget the ‘people’ part.
And Rook - Oddlief are the best couple ever. Will take an old friends to lovers story any day.

Unfortunately I cannot really think of anything that stands out in the Banner Saga 3 compared to it's predecessors. It really just feels like more of the same and that's a big let down for me because I thought the final game in the series would go out with a bang. Ultimately this series shares a lot of similarities with Game of Thrones both in it's story elements and the fact the the latter part of the series was a huge let down.
It's a soft buy for me.

Conclusion of the trilogy
The epic story comes to an superb conclusion. It's one continuous story. Now I have played the most of the first game, and the second game not at all. Nevertheless this game can be played as standalone, I found. Of course playing them in order is preferable.
This one has two alternating stories. One with Alette or Rook protecting the city of Arberrang. Because you're only in or around Arberrang it's a bit less majestic to see the banner only float through the city, while the previous games the banner intimidated the hills. The second story is about the Varl Yver, escorting Juno through forsaken lands to prevent the end of the world.
Choose your own adventure!
During playing you get loads of commanding choices. The choices affect your people's happiness how many people, fighters and Varl follow you, individuals's lives, whether you go to combat, how many opponents... Choices matter a lot!
Tactical combat
The game does a very good job pacing story with battles. The combat system is easy to understand, yet relatively deep. A few points of criticism here:
- the passive perks barely matter, while a lot of time is needed to assign points
- some heroes are utterly useless
- the battles of Yvers group are tough, I lost most of them.
In BS1 I got stuck on a fight upon a tower. I retried that fight two times, and that sucked all the enjoyment out. So when I was losing a battle in BS3, I was worried that the story would end. I am very glad that didn't happen!
A Norwegian story
Vikings. An interest in a viking setting helps loving this on first sight. I lack that interest and had a lot of difficulty getting into the first game. The first game all characters get introduced, while in this game they are set. Even if you don't know them, you'll get to know them along the way. What helps is the voice acting in this game, which clearly had a bigger budget. I wish it was all voice acted, but I understand the costs of that is big. It helps a lot to make the names more vivid.
A final nitpick... The placing of the dialogues in the bottom of the game is not ideal. I understand it's easier to split the artwork from the text, but it removes the focus from the eyecandy.
80/100

Spoilerfree Review of a turn-base masterpice
Firstly, and most importantly, only if you can check all the following bullets you will like “The Banner Saga”. If you can´t stop reading and get yourself XCOM Enemy Unknown or XCOM 2:
- You like turn-base-strategy! – every Fight is turn-based.
- You are fine with reading! – the whole story is told in written dialogues and some of them are long.
- You plan to buy Banner Saga 1-3 – its basically one story that is split in three chapters. Saga 2 / 3 bring in just a few, minor changes like a new Race or a slightly changed setting.
Ok, all checked. Good here’s what I think about this Game:
The whole look is definitely a highlight, the visuals combined with this epic soundtrack make your travels very enjoyable. The Story is well told and fits into this nordic, fantasy, medieval theme. The choices you make almost in every dialogue, matter and change the outcome of the Game. Some of the decisions will surprise you and can hunt you days later, what is basically part of the Fun. Me personally played till I saw the credits, then started a new run immediately after. So far, I´m doing things kind of differently and enjoy a completely new adventure.
The Battles are the only thing I disliked at the end, because your options are so limited. It´s so frustrating when you carefully plan and execute your strike, you kill the next opponent in the timetable, but the reward is that the guy next to him comes 1 turn earlier and smashes your face in, XCOM did it better.
So, if your cool with most of the previous statements buy it, note that the Trilogy is often on sale!!!

I have completed all three games. I’ve enjoyed the story, loved the art style, suffered with the characters, fought battles after battles and I’ve come to the conclusion, that the third part is by far the weakest.
Positive aspects:
+ thrilling story
+ meaningful dialogues
+ well-developed characters
+ great music
Negative aspects:
- crushes: this game tends to crush – it did so before the final cutscene and it did so in between battles; since I am not the only one experiencing this, I have to say, I expected better
- no new mechanics: If you’ve played the other two parts of the game, you have seen it all, gameplay-wise. I personally think that there should be some improvement while staying true to the core gameplay.
- everything starts to look the same: the art style is still good, but due to the destruction, all the meaningful places are blurred into one purple theme now
- Why did X die: yes, characters can die in Banner Saga 3, but in part 1 and 2 the game gives me at least half a hint when this can happen – I had the feeling that Banner Saga 3 was quite unfair about that
- Short game: I don’t need 100 hours of fun when it comes to games. Short games with a dense story are superb. Banner Saga 3 is a short game that is mostly fighting and the fights get repetitive, which is, at least for me, quite sad, because games shouldn’t be repetitive after 11 hours (which is the time I needed to play through the game).
---
I personally think that the second and third part of Banner Saga could have been one game. They could have cut on the battles a bit, make a few bad choices more visible and fix the issues with the game crashing. That would have been a worthy ending to an epic story.

By and large, The Banner Saga rejects these easy solutions and does the incredibly hard work of respecting the player’s previous decisions, from the major (which characters are still alive?) to the minor (respecting the stats/level/abilities of every character through all three games, rather than doing any “reset” like other RPG series do). The relative shortness of the final chapter is an inevitable side effect of the developers having to make many, many permutations of the final chapter, and it makes what’s there all the more satisfying. This is my Banner Saga, my triumphs and mistakes, and no one else’s.
I did find the third Banner Saga 3 slightly underwhelming because, after three games worth of sustained, subtle mystery, it does an all-explaining lore dump about five minutes before the end. This can only be the result of the designers realizing they had too many loose threads and not enough time to resolve them. It’s a disappointment, but it makes up for it with a lovely epilogue. Altogether, The Banner Saga is probably my favorite game series of the decade.

Oh and food is still running out with little hope of replenishment.
And most of your heroes are still hurt, or they've abandoned you. There's nowhere left to rest and your people are starving.
If you thought there was an upside; you didn't play the first two games.
The story is still captivating, the battles are even more difficult. Can you remember all of the noble acts and the sins you've made over the saga? This world hasn't forgotten; and you will be held accountable.
This is the Ragnarök you've earned. May your banner stand defiant against the odds.

This game, the third installment, feels like it should have been a dlc for the second since you don't actually do that much worth while in it and its bad so it could have made it easier for people to not waste money on a full game.
I remember when i was upset about how ME 3 ended but good god this series had a bad sequel and an even worse third game and a lack luster ending of that third game.
Don't waste your money with this game or the second. Play the first and then quit while you are ahead.

Great stories don't always make for fun games, however. The battle system is ... not good, with the alternating character turns encouraging you to counterintuitively weaken enemies rather than finish any of them off. It hasn't aged well and the game would clearly have been better off with a story only mode. I had some difficulty with continuity in playing the first game on Steam, switching to mobile for the second once I realized that that was an option, and losing my ability to transfer my save, then realizing that they had abandoned mobile ports and switching back to Steam for the third game. I gave up on my play through as soon as the quirky autosave system forced me to redo a battle that I'd already finished and just watched the rest of the story online instead, which might have been the way to go from the start.
Anyway, it's a neat concept for a game with interesting ambiance and characters. I really enjoyed having experienced it even though I didn't so much enjoy playing it, as with many ultra-grim modern games.

In the final outing, I'm sad to say that your choices in the previous two games have very little impact on the overall direction of the plot. This game could completely self-contained, apart from the other two, and the ending wouldn't change much. I know they were trying to make it so you could start with this one, but I'm infuriated that the overall plot is decided in one dialogue tree (and yes, I got the best ending, but that doesn't stop me from being upset that I spent >30 hours making choices that didn't affect the overall arc).
Character plots are good enough, the overall plot really struggled. Battle system is so-so.

PRO:
Play at your own pace even in combat, because it is turn based.
For me combat was a lot of fun. It's tactical, but not overly so.
The gorgeous art style.
Good story.
Good music.
You care for (most of) the characters.
CON:
Your decisions can lead to unwanted consequences, that's what the dev's intended, but sometimes it just feels like a gamble and afterwards it's hard to return to a previous save state.
In the beginning I was disappointed that there was almost no voice acting. Now I am fine with that.
The story was great, but unfolded a bit too quickly in the last chapter for me.

First thing of note is that just like with the second game, there is no good reason to start playing this game without importing save files from the previous one. This is a story in 3 volumes, not several self-contained stories that complement each other. Even the almost 3 year gap between me playing the previous game and starting this one was confusing enough, not knowing the story and the characters will lead to an even worse experience.
Either way, if you’re not familiar with The Banner Saga, it’s a weird mix of The Oregon Trail, interactive fiction and turn-based tactics with a visual style reminiscent of Ralph Bakshi and Don Bluth animated features and set in a North mythology inspired world that is dying. So what you usually do in the game is watch as your caravan moves from location to location, occasionally stumbling upon encounters that require player choice with an inevitable consequence either right away or hours (and games) later, and also often being pulled into the turn-based combat. You manage the morale and rations for the caravan, the hero characters who participate in combat and can be upgraded or injured during combat and you make choices, some of which can lead to some of those hero characters dying forever.
As before, The Banner Saga 3 is strongest when it focuses on its main story and the lore. And while I personally found one of the biggest revelations of the whole series to be somewhat lackluster, the conclusion to the overall story was good. It was also nice to see lots of characters, some present since the very first game, explored further and showing their growth and change. The visual style is stunning, rare animated sequences look great, music is fitting, occasional voice acting is solid.
Gameplay-wise, it’s more or less the same as before as well, but with more tiny variations and class skills. As usual, I’m not into this sort of gameplay, so I’ve played on Easy and brute-forced most of the combat, so I’m not one to give an opinion on it. But I did find some of the changes and additions to be nice. And it’s also nice that this time around, combat can influence the fate of the characters, even if it’s somewhat rare and still doesn’t account any character nuances, just a simple – win/lose check.
Overall, the game felt like it suffered from being another separate entry, though. There were moments where characters yet again died unceremoniously, described in one short sudden sentence and never mentioned again. And moments where the game goes “remember when…” and references something that happened several games and many many simplistic and often forgettable encounters before. And even though it did do the “your choices will boil down to numbers” thing far better than Mass Effect 3 many years ago (somewhat ironic given the roots of Stoic Studio), the whole ending section didn’t have as much of an impact as it wanted to have. I liked the Saga as a whole, yet, I can’t say that I would easily recommend it. It’s certainly unique and its world and visual style are fantastic. But is it worth the time investment of playing it in the end? I’m not sure.

Part 2 became more obscure, harder and you had to look up every ability/skill/whatever because it wasn't clear at all what everything did. More isn't alwasy better.
Part 3 is even more difficult which means you are forced to use a certain strategy,
Even more skills and abilities means you need to lookup and study for several hours to even begin understanding what each skill does.
I'm an average guy so I'm definitely not too stupid to play the game but this game has become more frustration than fun.

Pros:
- Incredibly good lore
- Excellent writing & dialogue
- Interesting combat system that is both fun and frustrating, but ultimately engaging & compelling
- Art work and animation style is beautiful (May not be everyone's cup of tea, especially if you're partial to high end CGI heavy games)
Cons:
- Decisions are impactful which is good, BUT, it is very hard to tell which decisions will not screw you over
- Combat system encourages strange behaviour such as leaving most enemies alive but extremely weakened so that the turn base system doesn't favour the stronger enemies
FINAL SCORE: 8/10
8/10 -

When I reviewed the second game, I felt like a single sentence was enough to get my feelings across.
I was hungry for the third installment to come out.
Well, BS3 has come, it has been devoured (via PS4), and while it indeed manages to serve a big five-course meal (really, there's nowhere near as much starving and dietary misery going on this time around), you are, at the end, left feeling a little as if you just ate yourself full of cardboard.
Where has the substance gone? Into the art, mostly, which is still stunning and enticing. The colours alone make you wanna dive into the screen and immerse yourself.
And how I wish I could say the same about the writing. It promises to take you on one heck of a ride, one that the two first games made you really excited for, bringing you all the way to the top of the rollercoaster, only to leave you hanging and with your clothes wet.
...because it's a waterride. Not because you soiled... you know. Anyhow, moving on.
The technical aspects of the writing have never been top-notch in any of the games. It's always been riddled with typos, misspellings, and general minor confusions (many of the mechanics suffer the same fate, often failing woefully in explaining how they actually function — from resting/healing to the details of several combat abilities to what-actually-are-talents? and how exactly is Tryggvi sparring alongside your other units in the training tent despite having died in some bog somewhere back along the trail?).
Which is to say, BS has never been technically polished. But in spite of all that, it was obvious that the developers really cared about the game, the story, and most pertinently, the world. The developer's love practically oozes out of the games from start to finish.
And the world is still as rich and vibrant in BS3 as ever. Thankfully. It's quite literally the thing keeping you playing. Alongside the gameplay, which ranges from fine to quite cool.
The shame is that rarely do we, as players, as readers, as people yearning for the promised ride, get a chance to delve back into this world we've immersed ourselves in for the past two games. That all stops the second you (spoiler) enter the tower at the end of the second game. Instead, in BS3 we have characters sharing long, optional diatribes and backstory in a straightforward manner. And that's sadly only the tip of the iceberg.
The amount of plotholes left unresolved by the end is, honestly, staggering, and it really makes you wonder what exactly happened during writing/production. There are rumours that the game was released four months earlier than originally planned. Whether that's actually true or not, I haven't fact-checked. It would explain a lot, however.
Just as the first two installments glossed over some of the technical details mentioned earlier, BS3 glosses over pretty much everything. The choices don't matter much (except for a few almost-too-small-to-remember ones summed up rather matter-of-factly at the very end, and even then most of them don't really matter), there's little sense of cohesion between characters and plot, and suddenly the game is over.
Really. It's just done. Not as in you-don't-see-the-game-coming (it's quite blisteringly obvious), but for one, the final fight offered no challenge whatsoever—and that in spite of the game, out of nowhere and without any kind of explanation, introduces yet a wholly new element into the battlefield—and there were no resolutions offered of any kind, really, other than the core of the primary plot, which (spoiler, I suppose) has next to nothing unexpected to offer.
Instead, you're left with questions. Some of these include (big spoilers, maybe?):
What exactly was happening to Bolverk?
What is the serpent doing when it's not on screen?
What exactly is going on with the horseborn?
What happend to Rugga?
Why is Dytch suddenly degraded to nothing but a slapstick joke (and essentially victim of cruel bullying that adds next to nothing to the story)?
Did all the Valka actually die? Why wasn't that part of the story?
And last but not least, what happened to Bellower? And how did he mindmelt with Bolverk in the first place? And why is he 'actually' immortal (and the god who made him, ostensibly, wasn't?) And how do they know that he's actually immortal?
(Check out Ambassador of Benevolence's excellent review for more and, honestly, better questions.)
To sum up, were this not the end of the saga, would I be hungry for more?
I would, yes. I'm a sucker like that. I won't, however, expect much more of their next offering in the saga than I would from a McDonald's coinoffer.

Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. |
---|
Is this game a masterpiece? Yes, the whole trilogy is a masterpiece.
This is the third and final part of a saga depicting the flight of a trek of refugees from advancing evil, bleak and merciless, killing your main characters in a second if you are not careful.
Depressing atmosphere combined with challenging turn-based fights and the management of your group of refugees make this one of the best story-driven game experiences you can find.
Conclusion:
Conclusion of a highly recommended trilogy.

Great soundtrack and visual art. Interesting dialogues with choices that define the rest of the story. I also liked the narrative. It felt like playing pnp rpg games.
The battles felt a little bit difficult and repetitive and some times frustrating. I also encountered problems with some occasional game crashes or infinite loading screens, that needed to terminate the game and restart from last save.
You still cannot save whenever you want, but at least the auto-saves are regular.
Recommended game, although not as great as the first ones, but at the same style as before.

Well, here we have everything and tons of new and improved things, like the 2nd chapter did with regards to the first one (which was awesome, but quite simple gameplay-wise).
A classical turn-based strategy game, now more polished than ever with wave-like combats and tons of units to start with, to upgrade and well, we don't even have real classes here - more correctly, each hero is a class on its own and has different abilities and such.
The story follows always the same one-way saga and you'll have to make lots of choices determining your fate, your battles and so on; the graphics are the most beautiful I've ever seen here and the soundtrack is quite amazing and atmospheric too.
You'll have also many features like arena combat, and a great history re-telling if you don't remember the first two chapters, plus a great tutorial to start with even if you're not new to the series and the genre.
It's quite fundamental if you're a little bit interested in this awesome story to play the other chapters - here in fact we'll start with all the old heroes, all the story right back from the caravan that reached Arberrang.
We're basically reviewing one of the best strategy tactical turn-based role-playing games of the last 5-10 years and I won't add more than this, it has already thousands of reviews and mine is quite useless I think.
Lots of endings, lots of characters to explore and promote, lots of weapons, accessories, modes.. we have everything. Recommended to anyone (maybe with a little discount).

And that brings us to the obvious question – four years later, does it worth buying another overpriced episode? The answer, though, is not that simple. Technically – yes, years since the initial release The Banner Saga still stays strong and keeps its unique charm. It's also nice to finally get the proper ending to the story. Which isn't as groundbreaking as you may hope, but feels pretty solid. The problem is – they still ask $24.99 / £18.74 from us, just to get the epilogue of the four years old game. Which sounds like a joke, especially since The Banner Saga 3 is also the shortest episode in the trilogy.
Also, they milk it like there's no tomorrow. Well, there was literally no tomorrow, since this game marks the end of the trilogy. Which means that after this point the guys from Stoic will need to actually start working properly instead of dealing with the existing content. Not sure whose idea it was, though. We all know that publishers can force such things on developer. But the fact is – not only Banner Saga 3 is the shortest, it's also the greediest one out there. You want the survival mode (which was free in the previous game)? You pay. You want the arena? You pay. You want some extra items and other bull? You pay. The bottom line – you pay.
And that's pretty much why I've decided to give this game a thumb down. See, I didn't really want to thumb down The Banner Saga. I really like Stoic's game. Probably even more than it deserves. That's why I didn't give a thumb down to the previous game. I mean, come on. Sure, it was just more of the same. Sure, the price was a bit too high. But the original game was so good that it was easy to ignore the arguable “let's sell them the episodic game and pretend it's a proper trilogy” policy. In this case? It's much harder to close your eyes on that. Because getting the same exact thing four years later with even shorter story and quite a lot of DLC? I just can't approve that. It was not 2014 anymore, the game mechanics started to feel old (we've all get enough of Banner Saga at that point), and it was really bad idea to milk the heck out of this game. Dixi.
