Wie schon der erste Teil:
+ spannende Story
+ angenehme Musik
+ abwechslungsreiches Reisen
+ nette Events
+ leichte Charakterentwicklung
+ schöne viel erklärende Karte
- zu wenig Sprachausgabe
Punkte die im zweiten Teil dazu kamen:
+ abwechslungsreiche Arenen
+ neue Einheiten

Same procedure as last game.

It's weird, because I remember liking the first game, but I guess the combat this time around just didn't keep me engaged. The story is still good and picks up right where the first left off, and as with the first, it has a distinct and appealing visual style. It's only the combat system, that you have to spend a decent amount of time in, that kept me from really enjoying this game about half way through. It simply got tedious and the difficulty curve felt completely out of whack. Top it off with very annoying, very well known bugs that never got fixed and I can't continue coming back to this game, and I definitely won't be looking to purchase the third installment.

If you enjoyed the first, this is really a new chapter of the same game, so i can't say you won't enjoy this game. It just got old for me after a while and eventually that outweighed my enjoyment of the story.

Next part of epic saga. Banner Saga 2 keeps a high level of impressions that created with Banner Saga 1. Basically, We received some refreshment in battles, and as far as I noticed upgrading heroes is a little bit more complex. We meet also new unique characters, and improvements in camp menu, such as training. Developers encourages us to sacrifice even more time to it by offering survival mode too, If we like to spend time on combats. Everything is sprinkled with beautiful graphic and music as before. Saga continues!

The second game of the Banner Saga series, that continues epic story, introduces new lovable gameplay characters, futher expands character upgrades and allows you to import savefile from the first game. The game itself is very buggy and it's recommended that you use community patch Drake's & YaK's Fixpack that will make your gameplay less buggy, but it also disables Steam achievements. But there is work around that, see below.

Drake's & YaK's Fixpack (patch)

Game has some major issues and Drake's & YaK's Fixpack it's a must to have for
less buggy and normal gameplay. Also the game has some core items broken and even fixpack can't correct them. So if you cannot deploy your units, you need have game in fullscreen and also restart Banner Saga 2.

The original Banner Saga 2 game is broken and it only gives you once per unlocked steam achievement +renow points ingame. The next time or if you reload the savefile the same achievements will popup in game, but will not give you +renow ingame, because Steam achievement is already unlocked. With this fixpack you will always receive +renow points ingame everytime when you unlock achievement, but you will never unlock Steam achievements (no pop up Steam achievement unlocked).
So if you want still to unlocks steam achievements and use fixpack, you can do that, you just have to use original achievement.json file (included in fixpack) and replace that one from fixpack in Banner Saga 2 folder (Steamsteamappscommon bs2assetssaga2achievement).

An enjoyable game with a moving story and interesting combat. I recommend the playing all 3 games. Look at more in-depth reviews and watch some of the combat videos.

Make your choices without looking them up. Its significantly more interesting to reach you own ending.

The only thing more beautiful than the artwork is the story. Helps if you know a bit of Norse mythology but not required. And the strategic turn-based battles are perfect match to the decision-making RPG storyline.

Highly recommended.

I really liked the story but i hate how combat works in this game.
Also there are wrong tooltips and/or (MAJOR) bugs and the item-interface in the hero selection is straight up bad.
Also this trilogy is heavily overpriced. I bought it on sale and still feel like i paid too much.
If i had known what this game is like, i'd never bought it.
(This review is the same for every game of this trilogy since it's basically one game)

Good story and lore. I didn't like the battle mechanics, they are unrealistic and force you to do things you never would do on a battlefield (like leaving all enemies barely alive and finish them off in the end).

The game itself is fun and relatively challenging tactics type i would buy again for sure.

But there is apparently a lot of bugs. One major one i just found which feels like a major screw you to the player is 2 of my main party aka Horseborns just lost there newly learned ability at level 6 because i leveled them up to soon in the story.. what type of game punishes the character by permanently removing the ability for leveling up to fast. I probably wont be buying banner saga 3 unless i read that they fix this major glitch which has been out for years without the creators caring about the players.

Banner Saga 2 is a game that seems to be better than the original in every way, but is it?

In the story department it is more interesting, as it offers a partial change in perspective: now you're presented with an opportunistic and aggressive morality type as you get to play as a leader of mercenaries. Where in the first game you were mostly concerned with survival and relative wellbeing of your people, here you decide whether you want to put these refugees in front of you to the sword or just take their food.

When it comes to combat though, the design decisions become sort of dubious. The devs decided to introduce an element of randomness into the game- where in the original there was critical hit and deflection for low strength hits, now there are about half a dozen percentage-based bonuses that may or may not activate in combat: a chance to dodge, a chance to recover action points, a chance to deflect a normal blow - you name it. And you get to upgrade them as you level up, because that's the decision the devs came up with to spice up character progression without radically changing it. It directly contradicts the principles of clean combat laid out in the first game. It used to be in a way akin to what would be later done in Invisible Inc - as little chance as possible; as much dependancy on the planning as possible. Now the God of Random has become a recurring guest on the battlefield. And towards the end of part 3 he just builds a nest in the middle of it.

But it doesn't matter. If you played the first game you have to finish it someday, for it's just one game in three.

Good game. Solid story and I like a protagonist who is just another guy with no special abilities.* For Rook only I’d get the game but the whole package is great.

Good locations, good animations, good story and good characters. And I’m in love with Oddleif which has absolutely nothing to do with this rating, I swear!

*Let me put it better: Don’t you wanna play a game where the main character is just another man with no special skills or powers that becomes a hero because of who he chooses to be and what he chooses to do? Cause that I can respect and admire. GO ROOK!

Expands on the prequel with great storytelling. 8.5/10

Banner Saga 2 is an enhanced version of Banner Saga 1. The Story continues further with new characters that really stand out.

Combat is improved with new abilities and new enemies. There is slightly more voice acting but the overall soundtrack is the same.

It feels a bit more polished, although it still has some of the flaws of the prequel.

Looking forward on playing the 3rd and final chapter

It's not often that a game get's better with a second part, while I really liked the first part it felt a little unpolished.
I would have loved to make more decisions and have more fights.
The second saga is a true gem: it focuses a the strengths the first part already had an enhances everything in a wonderful way: better graphics, better fights, better leveling up, more decisions, more background of characters.
Hopefully the story wraps up well in the third installment.

Continue your Saga!

A solid middle-chapter for the Banner Saga trilogy. Writing is just as strong as the first Banner Saga game. The art is breathtaking. Soundtrack is mesmerizing. Game also introduces some new classes, abilities that offer some new variety to the turn-based combat. My only gripe is that the last 5 minutes of the game feel a little rushed and could use some more setups before ending the game on such an abrupt note.

Obviously, if you're thinking of playing this game, then you'll also need to play Banner Saga 3. It's very much the middle point of the trilogy and the ending leads right into third game.

I was a little tentative about getting this game. I quite liked Banner Saga, mostly for the beautiful visuals and great story. However, by the end of the game I was getting a bit bored of the combat mechanics. There was nothing wrong with them per se, but they got quite repetitive as you are mostly fighting hordes of Dredge of which there are relatively few types of.

I am happy to say that Banner Saga 2 has fixed this. The Dredge themselves have some more exciting enemy types and, no spoilers, but suffice it to say you are facing a much larger range of interesting enemies that keeps the combat very variable and interesting while still retaining the very functional core mechanics.

Improving the formula and continuing the story from the first game, makes the battles more entertaining, with new races, different abilities, and more strategies. Greatly introduces lots of new soundtracks (which in my opinion are more epic than in the prequel). And finally, this title also adds more choices than the first had; be very careful, because one little answer might mean saying goodbye forever to a character you grew to love.

If you liked the first one, you must get The Banner Saga 2, and the third one, which I adore, turning the story to an end.

To who wonders how this game is like,
As a long time Banner Saga fan, the 2nd episode definitely continues its wonderful legacy of beauty and intelligence. Throughout the game, I constantly feel challenged by wise decision making and smart game play tactics. There is never a dull moment.

As an artist who loves art and paints in real life, I can't resist to fall in love with Banner Saga 2 every time when I play it. The art style of the Banner Saga series is absolutely the gem to treasure.

To dear developers who made this game,
Thank you very much for your diligence hard work and I fully enjoy the game from the bottom of my heart! I look forward to playing more games from you in the future. :)

This one is much better than previous part, which was great. But I can find one BIG minus - the fight with eyeless, it was so fucking ridiculous that i had to change the difficulty to easy, because that was impossible to beat.

Such a beautiful experience of the series 2nd part. Perfect soundtracks, top tier visual art and addictive tactical combat (it has even a BOSS FIGHT! with that) takes you to a nordic journey. RPG elements are enough, decisions are though, but its so fun to travel with characters. They've done great job with the main mechanics too. If you like to read a book, read this game. It's better in every way. Besides minimal loading screen freezes and crashes, it is a piece of ART! 9/10

I assume you've played Banner Saga 1. This one has more interesting game mechanics like
destroyable blockades,
way more enemies and the special effects they have,
the choices you make along the way are more meaningful,
you're not as renown-starved as in the first one (at least I was lol)
you can get extra renown doing special challenges in the training camps,
lastly, there's a survival mode for pure strategists like me where you have to just do battles back to back. I don't like that they're time-limited, but oh well.

TLDR; if you liked the first one, but this one

Definitely not as good as the first, introduced some new characters that i didn't care too much for them. Story didn't go anywhere interesting. And that's about it, not much to say since it's an exact copy of the first when we are talking combat and graphics.

Definitely an improvement over game 1. The story/lore is deep and music is rich. Disappointed at the lack of actor voice over. Great animations and artwork. I played the game on easy, fine for me, it was still quite tense. Strategy-heads will dig the combo possibilities, which are super satisfying when pulled off.
Thumbs up, for sure.

It is a better game than Banner Saga 1. Storytelling makes more sense to me. Decisions are much more meaningful. I feel like there were more fun random events pop-up during the travel. It is interesting to have different characters in my party that can respond to different events. I am attached to some of the characters, especially because they carry over from my TBS1 save, and many characters don't even make it through on some playthroughs (my free Tryggvi character from pre-order chimes in so regularly, I would be sad if I missed out on his crazy ramblings).

Pros
-Fantastic artstyle
-More of the same from Banner Saga storytelling. Multiple main characters with diverging storylines and parties (which reminded me of Game of Thrones, especially with the grand map)

Cons
-Some of these critical decisions can ruin your game. Let's say you invested 80% of your renown into levelling 3 units to max. Some decisions will kill off your units, and some can lose those 3 units right before a battle...you will be left with unlevelled units for the battle. So you are faced with making decision based on what is the good moral thing to do OR what is better for play through.
-Unintuitive tactical gameplay. You have to maim enemy units instead of killing them, due to the weird turn order combat system
-One bug encountered - had to restart on certain battles due to not being able to click to re-position units on board pre-battle, this happened about 4 times.

I would recommend this game 80% of the time (80% if you replay games multiple times, 20% if you only play one playthrough). Losing your characters (and the renown/items they have) right before a fight is really annoying. And looking up if you can lose certain characters in advance ruins the story. so its lose-lose situation for the players that only play it through once.

More of the same of the first game. I tried giving this one a chance even though I wouldn't recommend the first because I was curious how my choices would carry over. They barely did, and the characters I spent a lot of time saving in the first game got killed in the same way I hated in the first one. The strongest part of these games is the gameplay, and it's a shame how often they take a back seat to rote melodrama visual-novel style garbage writing. I did not have fun.

If the Banner Saga 2 were a boxer you had to face, it would be Mike Tyson. That's because no matter what decisions you make, and no matter how clever you are, it'll find some way to flatten you. Repeatedly.

That said, this is another fantastic entry in the Banner trilogy. The combat is more refined than than the first game with a range of interesting tactical options at your fingertips - always emphasized by the limited resources you use to move your squad skill tree in certain directions.

These scenarios are more interesting, with decisions harder to weigh up and ultimately bear. Playing as Boverk for half of the game, the leader of the Ravens, gives you an interesting mirrored roleplay dynamic absent in the first title. The art and music remains outstanding from start to finish. What's more to say? A fantastic sequel in every respect.

Just be sure you're emotionally ready for it, and don't play the game tired. There's a lot of tragedy to absorb here.

Yes and no.

Good story and atmosphere. extremely annoying save system and poor performance. still bugs after all those years and promotion and bug reporting. certain character losing abilities after levelup (the official fix/response is save editing). CPU leak in Hero selection screen. Inability to position character before the start of a battle for some reasons. all these bugs and others have all been reported throughout the years and no real patch.

With death-defying odds, plot twists, tough decisions, soul-gripping soundtrack, challenging turn-based battles and engaging writing you'll get a gripping, tense and inspiring experience. The art is fantastic and this beautiful world, which lore feels real and lived in, is a great backdrop to the terrifying, cruel and desperate things unfolding in it. New playable species? Yes.
New cool monsters? Yes.
Playable giant berserker? Yes.

Satisfaction? Not really. You gotta let the game play its walking simulator, you can't skip cutscenes, even if it's your second time going through the campaign. The game mostly punishes you for whatever choices you make and it's frustrating.

But I mean... Gameplay is... fun? I got the game for 2$, so like, sure, thumbup.

I loved the first Banner Saga a great deal. The second one continues with the same beautiful artwork, excellent storytelling, interesting tactical combat and evocative atmosphere.

However, I also found it has two substantial downsides. The first is that it feels pretty 'samey' after Banner Saga 1; while that's not altogether a bad thing for such a good series, it does really feel like it's just 'the same thing, but more'. More aggravating to me were the bugs. There are quite a few bugs in it, some of which significant enough to affect your ability to do the combat in the game, and they recur as well. The game has been out since 2016, so you would think the developers would have had the opportunity to fix them. Eventually I got annoyed enough with them that I stopped playing it, which is a shame. That said, if you can avoid them, it's a good game.

Too many bugs. The combat and story are nice, but there are just too many extremely noticeable bugs in this game to recommend.

best known examples almost anyone will run into:

horseborn will lose their 1st skills after promoting
positioning allies during the beginning of battle gets broken randomly.

Well well, I can't say I enjoyed the first banner saga, but I had heard that the sequel was a significant improvement, so I decided to give it a try.

What is it an improvement? Well no. There is some quality of life improvements, and the writing is more consistent, I suppose. However, personally, I thought the combat is still just completely dull, most of the mistakes of the previous game remain. Furthermore, they even made it worse, with the introduction of rng into even more aspects of the combat, despite the game clearly isn't designed for rng.

I still hoped for more narration and more cinematics to go with the lovely art style, but alas no. The game still relies on extensive written dialogue which would have been fine, if it was intriguing with any depth. However, it does not.

In the end, I felt like the second game merely builds up to the trainwreck of the third game, so if you are looking to play this game as a standalone or are interested in going through the entire series as I did. I would certainly say DO NOT... Save your money, and your time.

Banner Saga 2 continues where the first game left off, so while this is a sequel, it doesn't change the formula much, which if you enjoyed the first game is not necessarily a bad thing.

Great story, solid tactical combat and a really cool art style. TBS2 in my opinion is the strongest in the trilogy and also the best value as it comes with Survival mode in the main package.

You don't need to have played the first game in the series, but I would definitely recommend it.

Easy buy especially when on sale for 10 bucks.

This was the first game I ever quit playing because it was too depressing.

The combat is improved since the first game, and having a saved party makes your forces much stronger.

The story, though...every single choice you make, people will get hurt, and SOMEONE will hate you for it. You're in collapsing world, losing everything one by one. Even the map descriptions are depressing.

I want to start with the most glaring flaw in the game. The bugs:

- It crashed to desktop on me three different times when it tried to play an animation, all after a battle so I had to replay the battle completely.
- Sometimes not being able to rearrange my units on the battlefield before a fight unless I quit out of the game completely and reloaded.
- A weird bug during a boss fight where the boss could not be targeted, requiring me to quit and reload my last save.

If it weren't as well written and compelling, I would have given up on it after crash to desktop #2 (and I seriously considered it.) But it was fun, and the world and art and writing are well-crafted, and while after cracking the strategy of the tactical fights it was never really challenging I still never found it boring. I dug it. Just, you know, be forewarned about the bugs.

This sequel follows the success of the first one, adding more characters, more synergies and strategies, and continuing the thriling story initiated by the first.
It also seemed to me a bit more polished than the first of the saga, so, if you liked Banner Saga 1, you should get the second one.
Overall, a great turn based strategy, RPG game, with an exciting story and lovely graphics.

If you liked the first Banner Saga, you're going to like this one. If you didn't play the first Banner Saga, there's probably enough back story that you might want to consider starting there.

This is one of my favorite cold weather games. I always seem to come back to it when it starts to get cold out. I love the art and music, and I really enjoy the mechanics of the turn based combat. You can really begin to get attached to certain characters.

Awesome game.

Pros
- Great story - Not a lot of games get me reading all the dialogue.
- Awesome artwork and animations - The Disneylike thing worked really well
- Simple but complex mastery - Wonderful formula.

Cons

- Could do with more in game information on items and buffs.
- Glad they gave utility to the types of people in the Caravan unlike the Banner Saga 1

Better played without spoilers.

Like many others out there, I totally loved The Banner Saga. The idea of mixing The Oregon Trail with the turn-based RPG and awesome handmade 2D animation was so cool and charming that it was almost impossible not to love the game. Naturally, I've expected a lot from the sequel. Unfortunately, it turned out to be quite a disappointment. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

See, The Banner Saga 2 isn't really a sequel. Well, they sure try to sell it as one, but the thing is – it's just a second episode. The Banner Saga 2 answers the question about why the original game was only ten hours long by starting from chapter eight (for those who forgot – the original game ended on chapter seven) and not adding anything new. I'm serious, the new game doesn't have anything new in it. Literally anything. It's just that – the second chapter of the same exact game. No changes whatsoever.

Is it really a bad thing? Well... not entirely. The original game was too good to argue about the fact that all we've got here is just more of the same. But you also can't help but smell some bull here. I mean, they're asking $24.99 / £18.74 for this. Which is a price of a proper full indie title. And yet, all we get is a second episode of the episodic game. Like I've said, though, The Banner Saga was good enough to pay $24.99 for another ten hours. Especially since there's so-called “survival mode” now. Which can't be counted as a change, more like a little bonus, but oh, well.

Anyway, you've got the idea. The Banner Saga 2 isn't something you try first. You should start from the first game and pay for this only if you'll want more after it. Not really a big fan of episodic games and the way they sell it is sure arguable, but... dang it, this game is still good. Way too good to give it a thumb dumb. Sure, The Banner Saga 2 deserves some blame for not being a proper sequel. But it's just too good for thumb down. Way too good...

Odds are, if you're looking at this game, you've played the first Banner Saga. If that's not the case, don't start with this one. You will be completely lost and have some things spoiled for you. Start with the first game and play the entire series.

If you did play the first game and liked it, you'll be pretty set to continue in this one too. Gameplay is largely the same, with new classes and abilities added as the character roster continues to grow (and shrink.) The story picks up right where the first game ends (import your save file), and continues to ramp up, becoming more and more involved and daunting.

Where the middle game in some trilogies can be the weak point, I really didn't get that impression with this game. The entire Banner Saga series feels like one long, grand story, and never seems to stumble once it gets going.
