Über das Spiel

LOSE YOUR MIND. EAT YOUR CREW. DIE.

Take the helm of your steamship and set sail for the unknown! Sunless Sea is a game of discovery, loneliness and frequent death, set in the award-winning Victorian Gothic universe of Fallen London.

If the giant crabs, sentient icebergs and swarms of bats don’t get you, madness and cannibalism certainly will. But that old black ocean beckons, and there’s loot for the brave souls who dare to sail her.

Betray your crew, sell your soul to a Devil, marry your sweetheart. Survive long enough and you’ll achieve your life’s ambition.

You will die, but your legacy will live on…

Key features

  • A deep, compelling world packed with 350,000+ words of stories and secrets. Find your father’s bones. Determine London’s destiny. Defy the gods of the deep sea.
  • Beautiful, hand drawn art - castles of sparkling ice, prisons perched on lily pads, fog-shrouded lighthouses and the DAWN MACHINE.
  • Your captain will die. But you can pass on resources from one generation to the next. Acquire a family home and a hoard of heirlooms. Build up your own story across generations of zailors who braved the sea and lost - or won...
  • Real-time combat against ships and Zee-beasts, spider-crewed dreadnoughts and sentient icebergs.
  • Light and dark, terror and madness: stray too far from the gas-lamps of civilisation and your crew will grow fearful and eventually lose their sanity.
  • Upgrade your steamship with powerful engines, cannons and pneumatic torpedo guns. (Or buy a bigger, better ship.)
  • Hire unique officers like the Haunted Doctor and the Irrepressible Cannoneer. Each has a story to tell, if you can draw it out of them.
  • Choose a ship’s mascot: the Comatose Ferret, the Wretched Mog, the Elegiac Cockatoo, and more!
  • Trade or smuggle silk and souls, mushroom wine and hallucinogenic honey.

A mystery of a game. Nice dark atmosphere, like a lovecraft roman. Discover isles, harbours, monsters, mysterys and some kind of madness.

Good game but the occasional glitch can really derail your run. One time I had low-ish health and some bats came up to my ship. I wanted to fight them but for some reason I could fire my cannon. Died right there, ending a really good run. The writing is fantastic and the world is super immersive, but there are some kinks that really should have been hammered out in a game this old.

One of my favorite games of all time. The further you venture, the darker and more intriguing the stories become.

IMPORTANT!
I strongly recommend taking notes while you play this game. It will help you remember what can be obtained from visiting each island and defeating each enemy. Writing on actual paper is nice for quick reference if you don't have two monitors. When you first start playing it can be a lot to take in. Notes will help immensely. Safe travels Captain :)

I would recommend starting with Sunless Skies, actually. It's a much more polished, less grindy, faster-paced, yet similar game, set in the same universe. I, for one, do not mind the painfully slow beginning of the game (literally in terms of how fast you can go), but it will be a bit much for some players. In short, I recommend playing Skies first, see how you feel about the writing style (which, in my opinion, is stellar) and the universe/mythos. If you end up loving SSkies, you'll probably like SSea, in spite of its less popular aspects. If you end up liking both, I highly recommend Fallen London--the original free-to-play browser game that set the stage for the subsequent games.
Hope that helps.

Sunless Sea is completely unforgiving. The game asks you to play without using save states to make you feel the pain of mistakes and I respect it. Give the game a try on its own terms but if you feel overwhelmed then I would recommend just swallowing your pride and letting yourself save and retry when you fail.

This game is about exploring a strange and unbelievable underground world and that exploration is what is the most interesting thing this game has. Don't look up things unless you get really stuck and just read the text and immerse yourself in the fiction.

The game has so many things to explore but that exploration is very slow because of how travel works. I'd recommend having a book or something on another monitor to look at while sailing from island to island.

Though not for everyone the atmosphere and world building are so creative and unique that they are worth trying. Even if you can't conquer the sunless sea, being a tourist is still a memorable experience.

One of the most esoteric games I've ever played. Be prepared for a crazy setting with zero explanations, as well as some frustration as you will inevitably lose your first few captains.

I highly recommend you to try this game without reading any guide, and no lore spoilers!

The gameplay consists of:
1.) Reading a lot of text and following quests. This is the strongest point of the game. Slowly, you will figure out the world by yourself.
2.) Managing supplies and money. There is a bit of trading/inventory management going on, as you will need to procure funds to continue sailing as well as to buy new equipment.
3.) Sailing & combat. Exploration is a crucial part of the game and feels exciting. The sailing is fun and very atmospheric for the first few hours. Sadly, it will start to feel slow once you start sailing the same routes over and over. This is the main point of critique for this game. Combat is there, but nothing special.

The game should take about 30-40 hours to beat once. Zubmariner DLC is recommended, it adds a lot of new locations with their own storylines.

Kind of interesting, but the game is fundamentally broken - a roguelike, story-driven RPG kind of sucks when you're meant to read text and dialogue, but then on subsequent playthroughs you just are constantly skipping through all the text, over and over, which is fundamentally part of the game.

This game is extremely unforgiving for new players. It's likely that many players will pick the game up, fail to get anywhere, die a lot, and then get a refund.

However, if you make it past the initial learning curve (hint: don't be stubborn, just consult the wiki) and get into the world, there's a fascinatingly irreverent Lovecraftian world to explore that's hilariously morose and terrifying. And as the game progresses a lot of the threat goes away and it becomes more of a spooky yet chill cargo transporting game. Where you may die horribly to cosmic threats when you make the wrong choice in a port-event dialogue tree.
I don't blame players who don't like the game, it isn't for everyone. However, for those who enjoy the setting this is quite an enjoyable experience.

Sunless Sea and Fallen London (the browser game) have a fascinating world.

You are not expected to survive, nor are you expected to wholly understand the things you are getting into. You are expected to die and learn from your mistakes - or, if you want, read the wiki and other guides on what to do. The game can be punishingly unfair at times, especially early game, but I don't think that's necessarily something bad. You are a mostly regular human sailing in a world in which the cosmic horrors have decided to call your world home and no one can do anything to stop them as much as they might want to - why would you be any different without careful planning and work?

You can become a powerhouse in the game, but it takes a very long time - which is probably something I feel like everyone should be aware of; the writing and stories in this game are good, but they are a technically limited number of stories (bar some separate paths you can take) and the gameplay of sailing between ports can be very slow and/or plodding. The game isn't about sailing across the sea to virgin lands or conquering the world, it's about being an insignificant gnat who tries to claw their way to solve their own problems, or other people's if you're feeling generous.

The gameplay definitely isn't great, the combat is awkward and finnicky, but between the art, design, story, and worldbuilding I really really think this game deserves a shot IF you enjoy that kind of stuff and don't mind the moment-to-moment gameplay being lackluster.

I would treat this game as something to do while listening to a podcast, to pass time, to relax with. It's definitely not all that intense and has a lot of quiet moments with wonderful music and atmosphere via the environment. If you like the idea of diving into a really lore-rich world this game is probably something between a 7 to 9 out of 10. If you feel like your experience will be heavily hampered by slow and janky gameplay, probably more of a 4 to 6 out of 10.

There's a pretty finite amount of content, but every year or two I come back to the game because it has a certain character that intrigues me, which is more than can be said for most games that boast worlds to explore.

Sunless Sea is a fun, casual exploration game with a convenient death-warp mechanic. The stories included with the base game provide for many hours of engagement, and a reason to keep going to zee. While there is combat, this is not a combat game. While there is trading, this is not a trading game. I think people who try to play it as such will be disappointed. This is a slow-burn game that I feel is best-played in short, discrete sittings of a few expeditions at a time.

Although the starting ship feels slow and under-powered, it has generous cargo and can be upgraded with equipment, crew, and auxiliaries and is quite well-balanced: all other ships come with specific drawbacks. Want a faster ship? It's flimsier with a smaller cargo but carries an extra weapon. Want a ship with more cargo? It's slow and expensive and requires a large crew.

Fortunately, cargo is arguably not the most important thing you carry: various treasures, port reports, stories, and even the attention of the gods of the zee are all valuable resources.

The game is ultimately a stat-raising simulator, and it does eventually become grindy, but in the end the true friends are the ztories we make along the way.

Runs nicely on a Chromebook using Linux and mouse. Quick and easy to set up, just go into Chromebook settings, search for Linux and enable Linux and then install the game from Steam. You can also turn on GPU Acceleration in Linux on some modern chromebooks if required (not neede for this game). Type chrome://flags/#crostini-gpu-support in the Chrome browser and enable it from the drop-down menu.

Sunless sea is a game with great atmosphere and decent writing. The gameplay is passable but unfortunately the game doesn't have any methods of respecting players times.

By this I mean the travel time in game is tedious, taking literal hours to explore a map and it has no method of speeding up the experience. I wanted to like the game but after 1 corrupted game and losing any progress via legacy items I had, I have determined the game isn't for me or players like me.

I recommend the game to people who enjoy decent systems and fun worlds, but sadly I can't recommend it as a game.

fantastically written lovecraftian suspense horror, to the extreme. takes (most) of the queues from lovecraft horror but for the most part utilizes a very extensive thesaurus to supplement the prose

roguelike gameplay takes a minute to get used to, especially at the beginning when you don't know how to make money (and so descend into cannibalism while 2 feet from the shore)

After playing a few hours, one reflects on a singular strength and weakness of the Sunless Sea; the lack of an objective. The captain chooses a goal when they set sail for the first time, but the conditions for success are so beyond the understanding of a new player that they might as well be nonexistent. Bemused, I substituted personal goals. Explore uncharted areas. Earn echos. Unlock secrets. Improve the ship. The zee is packed with mysteries to uncover; the Gods of the Zee, what lives Above Ground, the politics of the zee, the mind of the Cheery Man, the lives of the Officers, and the story of each island. I feel like I only skimmed the surface. And it was done while living anxiously, searching for mysteries, but dreading them. They were too dark to resolve but too powerful to leave unexamined.

Whether I return to the shores or not, I certainly plan to take to the air in their sequel, Sunless Skies.

I've only scratched surface so far but MEH
I mean the story is great, the spooky, chilling vibe is definitely there but the whole process is sooo boring.
It's like you expect the ball sports to be fun because you like scoring goal, defending against the opponent but it turns out to be not your cup of tea because you have to spend so much time chasing balls, running like crazy man.
You have to spend so much time wandering around the sea. The ship given is so slow and weak. It would have been better if you can fast forward the time, but no. What do you expect from this hipster indie game?
You might feel tempted to read a book or goofing around with your phone while sailing but no, there's like tons of annoying opponents not worth fighting but will attack you and get you to game over if you are not alert.
The quest is really frustrating because you have to go back and forth like crazy. so it guarantees same boring sailing same way*2 You need right time and right item to meet the right condition to fetch the quest sometimes. so maybe same boring sailing*4 or more sometimes.
I wish devs' lives turn out to be like this game too. You have to go to Africa from Europe to get fund for game but it turns out to take place in North Pole. So you go there but the guy wants Kimchi from Korea to be delivered to him as requirement for funding so you go to Korea but North Korea nuked South Korea that time so there's no kimchi at the moment. You have go to space to find kimchi so you have to contact Elon Musk to go to space. You know how absurd this sounds? Fuck you.

For the man who can't decide if he wants to read or to game. Somewhat grindy, it must be admitted, but if you enjoy dry humor, a soundtrack you will fondly remember, creative eldritch settings that go far beyond just tentacles, and an artstyle I really haven't ever seen in a game before. it's a guaranteed good time.

I'm shit at reviews, so bare with my dumb rambling. But I love this game too much to not say anything.

Before you buy it, do make sure you watch some gameplay, at the very least, as the game is slowwwwwwww. I usually have something else to focus on, in a second monitor, so I don't get too bored. But the atmosphere, the audio, the writing, the lore, the characters... its so enthralling. The setting of Fallen London is so unique and cool, and playing this made me play the browser game too.
Basically, if you like games with great writing and a bunch of reading, great, spooky victorian vibes, goofy stuff in between, or even just... boats? I guess? You'll probably enjoy this.

Quick hint, though, do look up save file editing, and cheat to give yourself a bit more cash. Trust me. Its a very unforgiving, frustrating game, and doing that only makes it fairer. Or punish yourself, if you're into that!

Some of the best writing in all of the games I've played, I got it on sale for $7.00 but I would have been fine with paying full price.

The gameplay is certainly not for everyone. If you are looking for sea combat then this is absolutely the wrong game.

The early stages are a bit of a slog, but as long as you read a few of the guides you should be fine.

The lore is the main reason to play this game, but if you like exploration games then you will still get your money's worth.

I will say that the permanent death aspect hinders the game, so turn on Merciful Mode for the ability to manually save when you reach a port.

The game is very atmospheric although, once again, this mostly comes through text box. The music is great for this as well.

If you are drawn into the world of it, try the browser game that started the series: Fallen London. It may be a grindy but if you have the patience then it will give you more lore than Sunless Sea could ever dream of.

If you are still on the fence about this game, check out MandaloreGaming's video on YouTube. It was the way I was introduced to the game and I think that it is informative enough to help you decide if the game is for you.

It is insane how they got that golden ratio for Lovecraftian cosmic horror, everything is so unique and fitting to the spirit of the genre. Concerning at best to horrible at worst, every single little island you visit brings something new and incredible to the table. If it was not grindy and slow as hell (understandable for the genre but come on, even for a slow narrative experience this is too slow), this could have been easily a 10/10 but it stands a good 9/10 right now. Will play Sunless Skies soon, apparently they improved the gameplay and made the game faster in that one so that can easily be a 10/10.

This game is primarily a narrative and much exploration. It provides a pleasant atmosphere and correct graphics. The game additionally requires a lot of reading and grinding to stay afloat.

Though the game conceives an intriguing idea, it feels repetitive and slow.

...and then they nerfed it.

This game was ridiculously hard when I first tried it. And tried it. And...

I was just exploring my library and figured, what the hey! Enough people complained about Sunless Sea that Failbetter HAD to make the game a little easier, right? Lots of guides now explain how to get enough cash to survive the incredibly brutal early game, too!

So I tried it again. And again. And again. And...

Yeah, Failbetter proved that they want this game to be impossible, because they nerfed all the economy mechanics that allowed newbs to have even a slight chance at survival, and then overpowered their monsters so that leaving port is an instant death sentence.

The best way to play the game now is to do NOTHING. Seriously: just sit in your house in Fallen London, and don't bother going to sea. If you do, you will die. VERY FAST. (It's funny - one would think that all the players complaining about having to do such unfun things for survival would have clued Failbetter in that their system sucked, and that it needed fixing. A few entrepreneurs figured out ways around that unfun playstyle, and FAILBETTER TOOK THOSE WAYS AWAY!!! What could they possibly have been thinking?)

Don't play the game if you dislike text boxes and reading heavy games, if you do like quality writing then this is a game for you.
The worldbuilding is great, really interesting setting and characters, and with good art. Just beautiful, love it!
The gameplay overall is meh, which is to be expected and takes the back row:
Combat is simplistic yet effective, you circle around the enemy and shoot them in the rear; once you unlock the best ship and high tier weapons only the boss enemies show a challenge
Skill checks are really luck-based, and upgrading your skills takes really long and you cant even upgrade them high enough to pass some of the challenges reliably. But there is a positive in that since stuff going the wrong way make the game more interesting, but then again waiting an hour for a random encounter to trigger which is needed to continue the story, just to fail is just bad design

Traveling takes too long, even with the fastest ship with the best engine, and you will be doing a lot of traveling in the late game, can get confusing from time to time and I can imagine that you will feel lost after you return to the game after a while since the journal doesn't give you much information. The map can get confusing too, some objectives for example will tell you to visit a certain port which has a different name than the islands shown on the map (you can still see the port names but you'll have to zoom in and search for some time, minor but annoying). Exploration is great and every location is unique in both how it looks, the atmosphere around it, what story it has to tell, and how it plays in the overall narrative; and since you need to constantly supply yourself you cant just explore the whole map in one go (you can try it tho). The whole game is a big balancing act, in both how the player plays the game (balancing the various in-game items) and how the game itself was designed (great storytelling, mediocre gameplay) so it really depends on the player if they will enjoy the game or not.

In true fashion, like the Sea in many popular tales this game vexes me. It reels me in with interesting snippets and the promise of lore and progress, characters and locations I want to progress the storylines of.

But when I play, I feel my own frustration rising like my character's terror meter in the game. The game encourages you to throw choices at the wall and see what happens. This produces enthralling stories (for example, frantically racing north as the ever-hungrier Mr Sacks devours more and more of my crew), but also peaks of frustration (failing that questline a few hours later because I couldn't find an item i needed in time).

The problem, for me, is that playing this game takes hours. All 26 of my current investment have been one character, and I feel a vast, yawning gulf of play time between my current character and completion. But I really, desperately do not want this character to die, because that would mean re-exploring the entire map again, re-levelling all my stats, etc. The will helps with this, but I've incurred a curse (something I didn't know EXISTED until it happened) that prevents me from having a real heir.

So I'm stuck with what I can only assume will be a hellacious slog. I feel the call of this game. I want to see how deep it goes. But it's too slow. Too far.
The writing is good. The gameplay loops are interesting (optimizing routes, managing random happenstance, daring naval escapes and deadly combat. But in between each is 20 minutes of sailing across the wide, dark zee, while nothing happens.

If I had to fix this game, for me, I'd only really want a couple things:
1. A fast forward button, or some kind of zoom-out route planning option that would let me skip to my next port or encounter with a zee monster/pirate/etc. I know this detracts from the atmosphere, but once you've sailed past the ominous whispering in the chelonate 10 times, it's not quite as important that you feel unnerved.
2. A more detailed log/database of events and findings. The tiny scroller in the bottom left is cute, but knowing what costs how much where either requires perfect recall, tens more hours in the game than I have, or wiki use. Being able to look up where to get strange catches would be excellent. Knowing how long it's been since my last roll of a timed event, so I can maybe figure out frequency over time, would also be nice.

Who knows, maybe I'll come back in 50 hours and swap this to a recommend, but for now I really just can't say I'd encourage people to have the same experience i have.

EDIT: Oh yeah and the continue button doesn't work. This seems like a super basic bug to fix or remove and apparently not. Just use the load menu it works fine and doesn't require a force-quit.

It's difficult to articulate why I find this game so compelling, so I'll just tell one snippet:

In pursuit of my father's bones, I needed to explore the archives on an island where all the Mailmen go when they get too traumatized by their jobs. The mailmen are friendly, but I still don't understand what drives them so. I decided to try my hand working as a mailman myself, and need to carefully judge how much I dared risk my life and sanity trying to uncover the mystery of the place, and ultimately emerged unscathed.

Later, on a different island, I took a risk that I won't spoil, and ended up with half my crew dead, and desperately low on supplies. It was a race against time trying to get back to my home port, Fallen London. When I arrived I rested and recovered my Terror, but was penniless. I decided to trust a suspicious fellow with a knife, who was offering me fuel and supplies for free, apparently no strings attached.

Hopefully that was perfectly fine and nothing at all bad will come of it.

Hidden gem of a game, the writing and atmosphere is truly amazing and exploring always feels rewarding. The world is such an interesting place to spend time in.

It can be pretty difficult at first and things don't initially make a lot of sense, but that's part of the experience and having played quite a bit now I wish I could get that feeling back and experience it all again for the first time.

Overall, it's a truly immersive and gripping game as long as you're prepared to read... a lot.

Well made and well written. World-building at its finest. The visuals are great, but understand that at it's heart this is a text-based game. Yes there are graphics, yes you pilot your ship in real-time, including combat. However, the true art of this resides in the prose. If you tend to skip through anything longer than a couple lines of text, this may not be the game for you. If you enjoy immersion in a fully realized setting, this game is a must play.

i will reserve further judgement for when I have explored it more but for now this game makes me feel like a masochist who is about to walk in their favorite BDSM establishment..

You need to be in that sort of frame of mind to enjoy it and yet I keep going back at it. Of course I cant speak to its longevity since I have only been playing it for a couple of days, but it is a game you get a better understanding of as you play more. The first half hour I was lost at sea... a couple of hours later I was still lost at sea and several hours later I am still lost at sea, only now I see some lights in the darkness. Will know more soon :)

Okay I may be only played for 1 hour but that is where it should be interesting, I mainly struggle with the how-to at the beginning, no quest tracker, convoluted UI, and text. Already frustrated enough to tell the dev to just go back make a text-based game or hire a UX designer for this game because it's sucks.

I like the atmosphere and base story, but the gameplay, totally not liking it.

This seems like a really fun game, but it wasn't really my cup of tea.

There are a lot of really good elements to it like the storytelling and how the gameplay is much different than many other games I've played. But the learning curve is a bit too steep for me. I'm grateful that there was a UI and Font size slider in the options because good golly, everything is tiny! :P

In the end, my ship felt like it was sooo slow and I felt like I was sort of being punished for trying to play this casually. Even if I was careful, I kept finding myself without fuel or supplies or money and being chased by other ships or monsters and it all became a bit much.

I still recommend this game because it seems that there are plenty of people who can appreciate this style of play, but it just ended up not being for me. Sorry, friends. :(

Sunless Sea is a game about NOT KNOWING. You do not know the mechanics, you do not know the story, you do not know what items do, and you do not know the consequences of your actions.

The writing, however, is impeccable, and the atmosphere is suitably macabre. The sense of the unknown is key and core to the game and world alike. What little you do learn often only tantalizes your imagination with hints of possibilities.

It cannot be overstated enough: this is a game of ignorance and implication. You may think you learn things. Then you go mad.

Cannot play this game due to bad implementation of Font in a heavily text based game.
The font is blurry, which forces me to strain my eyes physically on a constant level.
This issue was adressed in 2018 and was completly ignored by the developer, since the game was a financial success.

For a person with glasses, who struggles with text in this way, its heavily punishing and not enjoyable.

This is a hard game to rate because on one hand, every negative critique I've read here is true. On the other hand, I LOVE this game. Uncovering the secrets and stories throughout the game is absorbing and fascinating. Actually locating and sailing to the stories' locations is excruciating. Building skills and resources is tedious and I've yet to perfect it. But the story is so intriguing, the atmosphere lonely, and characters fascinating. I can't say that I recommend this game whole-heartedly, because it takes a certain kind of person to really enjoy it. If you value story over action and don't mind being patient (and starting over and over and over again) then you might like this game as much as I do.

I don't like this game as much as I want to. The artwork is beautiful, but the interface is so bad. The roguelike nature of the game feels forced, and like a bad excuse for not balancing the game better and using a more traditional lifecycle/save pattern. The game does not benefit from the roguelike elements. There is a manual save option, which effectively turns off the roguelike nature of the game, but it doesn't really fix the game as it's too easy to end up with a save that unknowingly cannot be continued (due to unavailable fuel etc.)

There seems to be a lovely story in here somewhere, but you've really got to dig to get at any of it, and I got quite used to skipping the story since re-reading pages is so frequently required.

It's really, really unfortunate. I feel like this game comes so close to genius with it's pacing, story, world-building, etc., but just...misses something. It reminds me of a bland meal made from the most delicious ingredients.

The setting is fascinating and the lore is great, but the game simply isn't fun to play.

My first captain crept along carefully, trying to be efficient and avoiding fights. For his trouble he was always one step above poverty, and eventually perished when two ships from supposedly opposing factions decided that he should be killed for the crime of existing in their general vicinity.

My second captain inherited his chart (which deprived him of stat boosting points) and was killed by a crab, again for the crime of existing. Until that point he'd had to repeat all the same story that the first captain had already sat through.

This just isn't interesting. It's a roguelike, but it's dreadfully slow, and you don't feel like you're any better the second time round.

To sum up, you could spend a very long time playing this game. You could also spend a very long time watching linoleum curl. You will find both roughly equally rewarding. There's an interesting story here, but it looses something the second, third, fourth, fifth... time around.

The pacing is unjustifiably slow, and demands a lot of attention - especially because time is a resource.

It's a resource management game where you have to learn what the gameplay loop is. The design is to make you die to learn a little bit. You can accomplish nothing for a long time.

It would be nice to have an in-game compendium of what you've seen, because otherwise you are supposed to either commit things to memory or write them down for your own reference. The Journal tracks some things, vaguely, meaningless without context.

This game could have been a great game but unfortunately, making it a roguelike turned it into a mediocre game. Atmosphere of the game suits the story and it is great. Darkness of the zee and sailing into nothingness are pretty interesting concepts but game exaggerates it a bit much. While you are playing game, you have to spend most of your time to steer around. Then, read some text and after that steer again. There can be some random events or sea monster and other ships rarely but they will get repetitive quickly. Unfortunately, mission requirements are not balanced or have enough information about them (same with the items) and that means you can get a mission which will badly affect you, even kill you if you are not prepared enough. Because of the lack of information, you feel lost most of the time.
Since the game is so slow and you are doing multiple missions at the same time, you will forget some missions’ details. Because game doesn’t record most of the information, you will need to check the information you need from the internet (Journal is really messy, finished things don’t disappear or don’t go into a separate group).
Worst part of the game is randomisation. Most of the interactions are randomised, while there are some fixed conditions, and most of these interactions result with randomisation of skill or luck rolls. It doesn’t help most of the rolls are built for later playthroughs.
Sadly, if you don’t die and farm your heritage, game will be much slower and harder. Even though there is a very limited cargo space at your first ship, most of the ships are just useless and all of them are expensive. It almost makes up for not being able to leave your ship to your heir. Most of the mission rewards are parallel to this. The resources you spent to finish the mission is almost worth as the rewards. With the hours you spent, it feels frustrating. Because you can’t finish everything in one run (your character retires after certain missions), you will be weaker if you do a main run and then discovering.
As story, game is pretty intriguing. There are a lot of mysteries and the world is attracting. However, mystery is a bit too much and because of that, finishing the storyline doesn’t give you much. There are lots of moral choices but there is no consequence for them. So, you are trying to make an important decision without a reward or enough information. Hence, this makes the decision meaningless. It is same with the endings, fulfilling an ambition doesn't satisfy you a bit; you can go and retire instead of fulfilling an ambition. There isn't anything other than a tiny piece of writing. If you add the slow game progress to this, you will have a hard time enjoying the story.
By the way, most of the quests send you other places and when you go there you discover you need some particular items to progress. So, you go and fetch some items for the quest. What happens next? Same thing again. It's a pretty rare sight for you to know what do you need before you go to the target. Just think about, you go from London (western part) to a port at the farthest point. Then, you discover you need to go where you came from to buy something. Unfortunately, quest progress is really dull.
To sum up, game is intriguing at first, boring and repetitive after playing a bit. At least, the game isn't expensive.

I wanted to like this, the atmosphere and writing is great. But the gameplay is far from rewarding.

When I finally managed to scratch togheter a small frigate, I wanted to cheer and whoop in joy. That was until I tested it...
The fuel runs out faster than ever, the crew eats a lot more. I don't know much about boats, but at least among modern cars compared to old ones, the modern ones usually have more efficient fuel thirst. A new engine made it even worse so there is no reward buying a new ship or engine... so why would anyone want to gimp him/herself this way?

Conslusion: The game designer does not want a player to enjoy any progress in this game, that is proven with how punished you get for even daring to buy a new ship and engine. And I don't like being punished for managing to survive a hard game for a long time without dying.

Uninstall. Screw these player-hating developers.

After getting the itch to play again after a few years i thought i best leave a review.

First off, this isn't a game for everyone, it's not even a game for most people. It exists in a next to unique niche all of it's own.
The bulk of the enjoyment comes from reading. Everything from port descriptions to extended mission stories are all beautifully written, genuinely some of the best writing you'll see anywhere. Everything is worth reading, skipping dialogue in sunless sea is skipping the point of the game.

The setting is dark and gloomy, sometimes outright oppressive, but even in this setting the artwork is beautiful. All the backgrounds, characters and locations are full of personality and made with real style. The lore is exceptionally deep and the main feel is that of Victorian England mixed with eldritch horror. Steampunk London Lovecraft probably sums it up.

The pacing of the game is deliberately slow, until you're familiar with the mechanics progress is glacial. Nothing is given to you and next to nothing is carried over if you fail. You discover and improve through personal experience and memory, not by carrying forward bonuses or gear.

Early on your time is spent making blind trips in to the unknown, weighing up whether to press on to another mystery location or turn back with what you have, praying you have enough fuel and supplies to survive the round trip to inform the admiralty of where you've been. Once you're familiar with the locations of a few ports at which you can resupply, you are forced to venture further afield, the admiralty don't pay as much for subsequent reports so you need fresh info to keep the income coming. All the while you'll be uncovering stories and requests requiring you to go to places you've never heard of, encouraging you to explore further and further from the safety of London.

Combat in the game is secondary to the stories but occasionally required to progress and often helpful in replenishing supplies. You fight both other ships and monsters and it's a case of weighing up potential rewards against the risk of engaging. Low on supplies? Hope you can butcher some food from the giant crab before it rams your ship to pieces. The combat itself is basic but functional, however if sea combat is why you're looking at the game then i'd advise you look elsewhere.

All in all it's a game i love deeply and what makes it great will also be what puts a lot of people off. It's slow, lonely and extremely text heavy but if you stick with it, it's something very special.

Tldr: It's a very slow game based primarily around exploring, reading stories and uncovering mysteries while trying to survive the horror of the Neath. It has combat but it's not a selling point, if you're looking for action look elsewhere. If you enjoy reading and improving through personal experience in a lonely and dark setting with a learning curve that is steeper than most then you may have stumbled on your new favourite game.

I have been severely torn about my recommendation/ non-recommendation of Sunless Sea. It was last week that I found out about Failbetter’s heinous racialized hiring practices. I don’t want to support racism especially when it is under the guise of virtue. In my case however, I purchased this game roughly a year ago before playing it or looking into the company. The damage is done so to speak; I seek not to repeat that action in the future.

If one separates the art from the artist:

Sunless Sea really holds its own and has a wicked smack of irony that will be missed without being in possession of a certain mind set. This game is slow, low key, brutally unforgiving, and has a lot of reading.

In Sunless Sea, you are given a crewed steam boat to explore the underdark, fight pirates, smuggle contraband, be witness to unspeakable horrors, and indulge in desires of the flesh. Sunless Sea effectively has two play modes which I will label Easy and Hard. On Easy, you can save with abandon at any port you are docked at. Any misstep can be negated with a load to an earlier save point. In Hard mode, there is no such feature. Each decision made is irreversible by means of autosave. Sunless Sea is a starkly different game in Hard mode, I will argue it is a better one, as your stats and decisions have weight. I happened to play in easy mode to get a feel for the game and then switched to the Hard mode later on.

The writers of Sunless Sea have a love affair with the letter “Z”; outside of that the writing style is not particularly unique or captivating –there is just a lot of it. The overarching theme, mood, and atmosphere of Sunless Sea is delightfully entertaining. Unfortunately, the narrative is difficult to follow and become immersed in for two reasons I can identify: first, you get snippets of narrative in non-sequential order when you travel from port to port. I have ~27 hours of game play in and still have next to no idea of what is going on. Second, there is a crust of woke in the periphery of this game. A modicum of credit should be given to Failbetter for keeping that crust thin and voluntary to participate in.

This is a hard game to review because you need to start with everything this game gets tragically, horribly, unforgivingly wrong. The TL/DR of that can be summed up in three baffling design choices:

1 – The time from boot up to “playing” is insanely long and has you making character choices
before you have any context as to what the numbers means. Forget not drawing you in, this game is actively trying to keep you out.

2 – You are not introduced to the core gameplay loop and can easily miss it. There is a basic and remedial “go here, return here” loop that makes up the bulk of the experience that is just … never mentioned or explained. “Figure it our yourself” is fine, but the game actively gives you the wrong idea about what to expect, with the prompts and explanations hinting more at a survival game that will have you moving always forward.

3 – The pacing is … just awful. Not only is the speed of discovery painfully slow and lacking any spikes that keep you engaged, but you move at a snail’s pace. It takes an insane amount of time to get anywhere, while you are surrounded by empty darkness.

There is a type of gamer that reads that and thinks “that can’t be true, why would it have good ratings at all”, and that person needs to understand that there is ANOTHER type of gamer who looks at that and says “zero direction? Painful learning curve? Sadistic gameplay that I can wear like a badge of honor? SOUNDS PERFECT”!

And so that’s that. If you are the first type, you’re going to play this for an hour before demanding a refund and flaming anyone who has anything good to say about it in the comments. Do not waste your time and energy.

But if you’re the type of gamer that played Cultist Simulator and thought “Man, this would be great if only it was more directionless, slower paced, and required more reading” … man, do I have some great news for you!

Very deliberate game pace with good writing. Do not expect loads of action, there is some, but it's mostly about developing strategy over iterations and enjoying the stories.

I love the idea of this game, but no matter how many times I try to play it, it fails to grip me. You might say it's ironic, but a game about the sea fails to hook you properly.

Make no mistake, this game is hard. You'll worry about fuel, worry about supplies, worry about money, worry that the bloody tomb colonists you bring on a world tour would feel bored and start eating your supplies. Yet, the game continually draws you in deeper, every island you visit has its own unique quests, every officer of yours has his/her own goals and when you get that particular ship, engine or weapon from completing these quests, you'll feel happy enough to produce an heir to start his own legacy and roam the seas all over again. That, to me, is an indication of a successful game. I'd recommend that you give this a try.

A steampunk game set in a vast underground ocean known simply as the Zee. You inherit a ship, a crew and after choosing a goal, you are bound for the unknown. Exploration and treasures await to satiate desires both subtle and gross, but its not the timid.

This game is fairly popping and fizzing with so many stories and adventures. Will you try to wrest your dead fathers bones from the fathom king, or will you side with the guinea pigs of pigmote island against the cunning Rats? Will you be a smuggler, a pirate or keep to the straight path. Will you navigate your way to surface to trade in Coffee or be a monster hunter?

There is just a lot going on with this game and it gets its hooks into you from the get go. Word to the wise. This game can be pretty cruel, but fear not, there are plenty of guides out there to help you when you start out. There is also an expansion that allows you to turn your ship into a submarine and you can explore the deep of the sunless sea.

If it has any problems... its the the sheer scale of content that's out there. It can be bewildering and difficult to keep track of what you are doing or should be doing. The game is also very vague about how to achieve goals and this sadly is its biggest problem. Each and every thing you do involves traversing the sea. There is no fast travel system. Now this is not an issue when you are in the early game, and trying to map out the regions, its about exploration after all. But the endgame is less about exploration and more about fulfilling various goals and objectives. With this in mind then, you can see that the endless traversing of the map starts to feel a bit grindy. I really do wish it had a fast travel system by that stage in the game or a way of speeding up time. Because as much as I liked it, I really felt that this is were the game was overstaying its welcome.

I did like it though and if exploration and strange tall tales interest you, then give this a go.

Eh, I think overall Sunless Sea has all this great stuff you can do, but it's sort of ruined by the sheer grind of literally everything you do in this game. Even just fighting stuff is like, a great idea and a lot of fun but also just stupidly dangerous and not worth partaking in. This game has progress to the doing of things that you can do in the game, and every time you die you just have to start over and do it all again, or whatever. I just think it kills the game.

I think if you just earned a little more everything from everything you do, it'd be fine but you're scraping for every little thing and still not making back more than you spent on doing the thing you just did. It's not actually necessarily fun figuring out the ideal grinding route to make up resources to do anything in the game.

So while obviously I have to praise the wonderful writing and the imaginative setting and all this other stuff that's actually genuinely good, I might not actually recommend the game itself?

Whatever flaws one may find in the gameplay mechanics or other aspects of the game are easily outweighted by a rich and story-filled worldbuilding presentation as well as some of the best writting one could find in videogames.

What an awesome, atmospheric, beautifully crafted world. Easy game to love. Takes some learning as its very different from anything I've played, but will definitely check out their browser origins game afterwards...

Thanks for many solid hours of entertainment from both me, my sailor father, and my girlfriend who have all bought the game on their respective devices now! Much love, a player.

Jesus Christ, the permadeath is a son of a bitch in this game. You'll put so many hours into exploring, trading, grinding, farming, fighting, and the more you get the hang of the game, the more complacent you'll become. Eventually you'll end up dying because you did something stupidly careless and you'll have to start allllll over again. Not even the discoveries you've made on the map will carry over into your next life. It's absolutely ruthless to players and I can understand why some reviews have a high play-time yet they're a thumbs down.

BUT, despite all that, I still enjoyed the run I had. The game has a really cool Weird Fiction-vibe very much in the vein of Lovecraft and Ambrose Bierce. Each island port you visit has a story to tell and they're all very well-written, so if reading's your thing and you love those kinds of short horrors, you'll probably really appreciate this game. Just take my advice and manually save OFTEN.

Great writing, nonexistent gameplay. Getting anywhere takes ages, and you'll be going back and forth across the same map a million times. This should not be a video game. Get this guy to write a novel or RPG sourcebook.

PROS:

- Awesome world building, 10/10 storytelling and atmospheric visuals make the game intriguing to play.

- The choices you make really affect the risks you'll have to take to succeed in achieving your goals. Most of the time it is high risk = high reward but sometimes the penalty you receive for taking the risk and failing will cause you to lose the game which also adds up to the importance of evaluating every choice you are given because even a single bad choice will backfire later.

- The game rewards careful planning; the importance of fuel, money, supply and cargo space management as well as your route choice are all things that you will want to look into before setting sails as re-stocking along the way won't always be an option once you leave the harbor.

- It is very hard to speak about the horror elements without slipping spoilers but the 'bad things' in the game are just EPIC.

CONS:

- When your captain dies, it doesn't matter how far you got with the quest lines or how many you completed. You will have to start all over and often re-do some of the quests.

- Depending on how far you get before you die, how many times you die and if you already know how the map works, moving your ship from one place to another accompanied with the lame combat system can sometimes make the game experience a bit passive and/or boring.

- Not necessarily a con but it is worth mentioning that you probably won't have any fun if you don't read the texts as most of the interesting things in the game are in text form.

------

Overall Sunless Sea is a great game for exploring the unknown. The game provides hours of story content to enjoy and even though dying after a long successful run with your captain may be a shattering experience, you will always be left with some new information about quest strategies and efficient resource management which helps you get further with your new captain. My personal rating for this game = 8/10.

Know HP.Lovecraft? loved his stories? Sunless sea is as lovecraftian as you get in modern writing. You are a Zealor in the underzee, where ports such as Fallen london and the steel republic await your patronage and the secrets of the black underzee are yours to unlock and retell at your own peril. You take on the role of a zeecaptain that seeks to earn enough echoes(money) to retire from the dangers of the zee, Or explore it’s secrets and history of it’s peoples. Either way the narrative branching and sometimes scary story lines will test your resolve all the way. Either way, if you enjoy a good LONG book and wish you could have more influence over the narrative it presents. Sunless sea is an amazing choice.

To put it simply: I couldn't bring myself to finish the game.
Even after doing some research online and figuring out how to cheat and give myself more money (in an effort to save myself countless hours of sailing back and forth to the same destinations, performing a mind-numbingly tedious loop of grinding for the resources necessary to upgrade my ship and / or weapons).

I tried to play this game.
I WANTED to finish the story and learn more about the history, lore and characters of this highly fascinating world.
I even tried to learn how to be better at, and find more enjoyment in the clunky combat system.

But I guess the game just wants me to sit down, shut up, and get wreck'd...

Whaddya mean you don't want to sail at an excruciatingly slow pace across an unnecessarily large and shifty world map?
Spending an average of 45-60 minutes IRL, just to get to read a single new dialogue option, whilst constantly at risk of being forced to restart your entire run doesn't sound like fun to you?

I've got nothing against the people who did manage to enjoy / finish this game, but I sure as heck didn't have the self-loathing, er I mean patience required to do so.
The overall gameplay loop and pacing were bad enough to turn me away from purchasing Sunless Skies, and that's a shame.
Because as you can see I rather liked the atmosphere, aesthetic and stories contained within, but the gameplay itself was about as enjoyable as pulling off my own fingernails, AS SLOWLY AS POSSIBLE.

---------------------------------
TL;DR

Lore / Environment / Story: 10/10

Art Style / Atmosphere: 9/10

Audio Design: 8/10

Gameplay Loop / Core Mechanics: 2/10

Holy Zhit is this game good. I played Sunless sea for nine hours the day I got it. Nine hours and I didn't even scratch the surface. I ended up dying just knots away from the harbor after making good progress, it broke me but I never uninstalled. Sunless Sea has a unique and macabre way of rewarding the player in a series of gripping stories and systems. My one and only criticism of this game is that the starting ship is needlessly under-powered, other than that this one gets the gold star.

Wonderful, but if you're not up for a difficult, obtuse experience with *a lot of reading* this is not the game for you. If you're looking to soak up atmosphere like an ocean sponge, and enjoy the feeling of being utterly bewildered, it's a mesmerising experience. The world and atmosphere they've crafted are pitch-perfect. But it is a niche game that will certainly not be to everyone's tastes.

(Incidentally i'm playing this game with the wiki open in the background. I'm trying not to rely on it to much, but how you could make it through this game without it I don't know. If you have you are a greater captain than I).

Sunless Sea is the exploration of what you value. Crew or Sanity? The riches of going far into the dark or safe transport of a route near home? Time, fuel, food, safety? Beautifully balanced to push you just a little farther each time by moving the narrative just a little farther from home and by being well written enough to make you want to go a little further from safety and into the dark I can fully endorse this game.

I absolutely loved this game! Everything is great for me, game design, sound design, soundtrack, art, ambience and story (be prepared to f*cking read you lazy piece of sh*t).

I was not familiarized with other works from the studio and creators of Sunless Sea, but it got me curious, given how much I enjoyed it.

The exploration of the zee, the discovery of new areas and ports, the trades you can get involved in and missions you can do, all amazing.

The game has a slow pace, but in some specific voyages my heart was pounding and I was on the edge of my seat as I tried my best to get to my destination before starvation took hold. In some the crew mutinied, in others I think the captain lost its mind, I don't know. At some point I got stranded without money at the mercy of the sun on that scorched hell-like surface.

Either way, keeping in mind the general slow pace of the game, it is not without emotion.

What some people consider flaws of the game, like the fact that sometimes you have to act without knowing what the f*ck is going on or what might be the consequences of that action is a positive for me. It is exactly the unknown. It is the fact that a succesfull run can end with a dead crew and captain because you took a mission and did not know how to finish it, or where to finish it and got lost at zee until you lost your mind in that ever present dark mist. You need to explore. And to do so you might die. That is life in the underzee for you.

It took me a few captains to complete my first sucessful run and there is still a lot to explore given the story options I didn't pursue for the sake of others.

So, I absolutely recommend this game, but you have to keep in mind that it is overall slow paced, with a lot of reading and a lot of tries. There are people who enjoy this and those who don't. But for what the game is supposed to be, it is perfectly.

One of the best written games ever, in the spirit of Planescape: Torment and other old-school RPGs. Extremely challenging even after turning off the default (merciless) mode - but that is exactly what we need :)) Expect to spend 100+ hours if you're a fan of steampunk and horror.

This game is the spin off of the web based Fallen London/Echo Bazaar. The original has a word count of over 300,000 words, which creates a depth of lore not usually found in other games. Sunless Sea, has a slow moody level of game play with one of the best sound tracks I've ever heard.
A word of warning, if you have issues with multiple deaths or cannibalism, turn back, you've been warned. I have yet to turn to the red finger'd path, even after half a hundred deaths, so it's not mandatory, just much much harder. Also check out the sister game Starless Skies.

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#330 out of 560)... it's time for Sunless Seas.

Nothing in the world is quite so compelling as Victorian-esque science fiction, steampunk or not. Sunless Skies is... pretty steampunk, but with a distinct Gothic/Lovecraftian flair. Gameplay-wise, I can't say I noticed a lot of depth to the game: you sail from port to port to transport passengers and cargo, completing quests as you do so and slowly mapping out the bast underground world while managing your ship and crew. There's a degree of resource management that can be annoying to keep track of, but once you upgrade your ship a bit things become much more comfortable--though the threat of enemy ships and arcane nautical horrors roaming the depths, ready to reach up out of the seas and capsize your vessel remain constant.

Generally speaking, and forgive me for stating the obvious here, a game like this will live or die by the quality of its writing. Thankfully, for the most part, Sunless Seas' narrative(s) is very compelling: presenting itself more as a collection of short stories than a single, over-arcing story. This largely works well, and the text tends to be very well-written, but the game occasionally stumbles when it comes to plotting. In part because the map is (partially) randomly generated, it's very easy to complete the first part of a quest, and then not be able to finish it for a long time as you try to discover the relevant destination. And when you do complete the latter half of the quest, you may have already forgotten what happened in the first half. The same holds true for quest chains, where subsequent links in the chain may leave you a tad confused due to forgetting details from prior links. This seems to be a common problem with open world RPGs, so perhaps it doesn't even bear mentioning, but it was a minor point of frustration for me, so I think it bears saying.

All said, Sunless Skies is a brilliant, deeply unique game that lets you explore a world unlike any other, filled with imaginative, evocative stories. Handily one of the most impressive indie games I've encountered, and easily one of the most compelling story-focused sandbox games I've had the pleasure of playing.

There isn't much that compares to the feeling of making it back to port with a ship that's barely holding together, last scratches of fuel and supplies and then seeing your wallet fill up as a reward for your dangerous, daring, outright ludicrous venture into the deepest depths of the Underzee.
10/10 would despair over Bat-Zoup again.

Strangely addictive for such a slow paced game. I come back to it year after year.

This is a very good adventure game, so if that's the sort of thing that you're into, you should definitely give it a go; note however that this is a perma-death game, but it's not a traditional rogue-like; it is a text-based game, so dying just means you have to re-read everything you've already read over again, which isn't exactly exhilarating, so there's no catharsis in dying and starting over, it's just annoying. So I strongly recommend anyone thinking of playing this to look up gameplay tips beforehand, as if you try to learn on the fly, you will die repeatedly, and that might end up putting you off the game.

While it's a hard-ish game and a slow burner, it's a good game with atmospheric quality. Granted it's been a long time since I've played last and that was earlier in its more beta-stages, I have no doubt in my mind that as the developers have built onto what was there at its core that it's grown in quality.

Playability: It's easy to pick up, easy to play, and the difficulty only ramps up as you make choices and take risks. The controls are simple and even the most novice of indie gamers will do just fine.

Re-playability: Good luck beating it to figure out if you can even replay it. It's been pretty never ending last I saw.

Context: You don't need to play the initial game or its sister game to understand it. In fact, this game tells stories all its own with little need for hand-holding in any sort and on top of that it builds its own atmosphere through audio, color palettes, and simple birds-eye graphics and little art cards for characters and items that are descriptive enough.

Story: It's like an MMORPG in the way that you kind of pick up a handful of quests, and you just kind of complete them as you go. Half the time I don't actually set out to complete half of them, I just end up doing it through happenstance. Except for a couple that you need to complete before returning to port, for the most part your first few Zee Captains you'll just stumble through a bunch of your quests entirely by accident.

Understandability: Prepare to read. Like... A lot. People weren't the talking type when I played in fact the entire narrative and story and its millions of plotlines and points were all told through your captain's journal entries, the story notes and scripts that were told. If you aren't literate, this game isn't for you.

Is it good?: I mean, it's my cup of tea. It's for fans of Lovecraftian styled themes, people who like nautical themes, and people who like a decent learning curve. It really captures the theme of risk equals reward, as well as a sense of karmic justice.

Moral of the story; play stupid games, win stupid prizes. So play your game intelligently and you'll pull through alive. Only alive though. No promises you won't be completely batshit insane afterward. Good game though!
