Moving on...
The Good:
- Bright colorful world. Good music. Good model work, albeit more bouncy with some models...
- Very fair with free to play options. The main campaign hands out some really good end game units and the required materials to get you started. It hands you a blue monkey named Gore who is hands down one of the best tanks in the entire game.
- The game throws free summons at you giving you ample pulls from their gachapon system.
- Interesting theory crafting with the vast number of units and team compositions.
- Viable mid-level units for the mid-late game content. You will not necessarily need to rely on those exceptionally rare units that are difficult to level up.
- Auto-play for quality of life. My life is busy. Being able to have my teams level up for me while I do other things, like make dinner, play Elden Ring, write reviews, or a myriad of other things – This is very welcome.
The Mediocre:
- Runes (a.k.a. - monster equipment) and main character equipment loot potpourri sucks. Randomized stats are pretty garbage. There is a little control in this by focusing what sort of equipment you are grinding for, which makes it tolerable but it feels very much like a time sink.
- Translation bad. Video game, yes? – The game is not English speaking first. The stories make little sense and some dialogue feels like it was given to a rabid mongoose who then lost an arm wrestling competition to a sloth, then translated to your native language. I understand this is an expensive process and I definitely forgive them of it. However, it is bad enough that it must be mentioned.
- Limited dungeon entries per day gates your progression. Being told you cannot have fun can be frustrating.
- The 4-star and 5-star units can take a lengthy time to build up and can be the sole focus of your entire month if you are free to play.
- Guilds are fairly meaningless. The game has many mobile game issues with the community. Things to do but not really. Ways of interacting, but not really. You can only block 2 players in chat which does little to mitigate the myriad of spam bots selling you currency or randomly talking in French.
The Bad:
- PvP is forced. There are upgrade materials that are locked behind PvP participation that you need to be viable in end game PvE. Because of this, PvP drives a lot of the grind after the story and especially after you run out of upgrade materials. The system is bad. Matchmaking often times had me get crushed by a player I never had a chance against or reversed roles and I crushed some poor lower level player. With the way the game is structured with the cash shop, the right units for PvP can easily be purchased by sheer brute force. This leads all interactions with PvP to feel unfair.
- PvP is also pointless. PvP has so little participation from the community because F2P players do not want to be crushed into oblivion and have inverse fun, they had to actually patch in better rewards for losing! Doing the bare minimum, quitting out, or just walking away from the game for the next five minutes is often times more worth it to gain some upgrade materials. The developers have a community actively refusing the participate in their sham system half the time.
- I would recommend doing the bare minimum in PvP and throwing the game. Some may call this poor sportsmanship. To which I counter: In order to be a poor sport at something, you must first produce a sport in which to be poor at. Their system is so broken and unfair, you cannot even call it a system.
- The cash shop says it up front. This game is not seeking to cater to everyone. The developers have made it clear that their fleet of ships are whaling vessels. Packs ranging from $18 to $100 USD can be found in the cash shop. If you are willing to pay, you can skip a lot of the waiting or possibly get one of those “jiggly” models.
- Mobile game interface on PC is horrible.
- Lack of info on units or some strategy on some bosses. Some information is just incorrect due to poor translation or just simply is not clear.
Overall, there are some enjoyable moments and experiences to be had. You could do worse with a free to play game. There are some difficulty spikes as you go from early game walking over everything to a vertical wall in the last act. Be prepared for the community to exclude you if you lack the arbitrary power numbers towards end game content. You most likely will not get carried and if you are bringing a penalty to the team due to lack of power – you will be kicked.
Final Note on the Cash Shop:
With the way the game is structured and pushes you into the PvP, I find the setup of the cash shop to be very predatory. This is especially important if you happen to have poor impulse control or spending habits.
Reasons I Quit Playing
I finally called it quits after the game turned into a grind heavy, time gated experience. Any meaningful progress is behind a predatory and overpriced cash shop. Which is a shame because I really enjoyed the variety of creatures and building teams with them. I would have much rather paid for the same game without the MMO portion or cash shop economy. The concept for the game is great and that would have been much better as a single player game with some multiplayer elements.
Play for awhile but do not spend money. If you feel like spending money, go buy a PS5 and a few games as it will be cheaper.

FOMO isn't really a problem here since 'Limited' banners aren't really limited since you can still get them even if the banner has already expired, which is cool. I'm still getting Pioneer dupes for my Woosa, so it's safe to say that it's a confirmed thing in this game. You're not going to need them at your 1st and 2nd run anyway, and will definitely benched the first 5* unit that you'll get until you have the materials to level it up as you progress. So, if you're the type to worry about not getting strong units, don't be. You'll get them.. eventually. Just don't forget to pray to rngesus.
Getting good gear is a fucking headache, but if you played MMO's or gacha games before, then you probably have built a tolerance for this kind of stuff already so chances are you wouldn't get pissed as much lol. If you can find people that can carry you on raids, then good. You're all set in gears. RNG is going to be your only problem at that point. But if you're a solo-player who is embarrassed to ask help from strangers in game and don't want to be dead-weight in raids, like me lmao, then Subjugations (Dungeon to get craftable gear) is going to be your friend. You can upgrade subjugation purple gears to not too shabby legendary gears.
One of the things that I don't like about this game is the PvP. Gacha games with pvp is always going to be an unbalanced mess. Tried battlefield for the first time just to clear an area exploration quest, and the very first opponent that I saw just oneshotted me. Pretty 'fUn' alright lol. But the PvE, is pretty good. 9/10.
Anyway, the game is surprisingly decent and somewhat F2P friendly once you manage to get past the hurdles. Would I recommend it? Yeah, sure. I played this game with zero info about the OG summoners war and I still enjoyed it. So, go ahead and try it.
7/10
