Review zu Styx: Shards of Darkness
Zumindest in einigen Stellen.
+- Kleine Glitches in Ingamecutscenes

I didn't like that the final ultimate skill is unlocked when you finish the final mission so there is no use for it at all. You unlock it when you have finished the game every which way and are done with the replay value.

While some of the levels can feel a bit samey, the environments are still interesting, the story was engaging enough, the mechanics solid, and Styx's crude sense of humor was definitely appreciated.
So, buy this game and go pillage some stuff, ya amber addict!

While I enjoyed playing, it’s a fantastic stealth game with complex level design and a lot of the maps are really fun, one map is recycled three times and another was twice. The final mission was remarkably short, 8 min normal play with no attempt to speed run, and the actual game ending was very vague, so it’s a bit disappointing. You also get points taken off your final mission scores for killing people, which is annoying for two reasons. One, it limits a player’s playstyle and renders a whole branch of assassination skills pointless, two, you need points to actually get skills so unless you want to wait till later missions to get anything useful, you need to sneak your way past enemies making maps longer and more difficult.
TL;DR: A great stealth game, 10 missions to play through but a lot of recycled maps and a vague ending. You get points taken away from killing npc's, which you need if you want skills.

Set a few years after the events of Master of Shadow, Styx is doing Goblin things in the city who’s name I memorized but then forgot. I can’t really say whats going on because it spoils the other Styx game, but there’s a hunt going for Goblins across the kingdoms led by a group called CARNAGE, but after Styx is recruited by the CARNAGE leader to unravel some mysteries, Styx is caught in another conspiracy that will probably end in a few stabbings and probably war.
Shard of Darkness is a continuation of the last game in terms of gameplay. Sneaking is the way to go, since Styx is small and fragile like little baby. There are plenty of opportunities to just sneak around and feel cool while doing it with enough things in the way to stay behind and enough shadows to lurk in, since on any difficulty but Master you’re basically invisible in the Shadows.
A Master of Shadows if you will.
I accept Paypal.
You go about from mission to mission in large, open world environments, achieving your objectives and stealing anything of use. The environments are a nice departure from Akenash from MOS, but the big problem is that, much like my trauma, you retread old ground a lot.
There are basically only six or so areas you go through in the game with some departures. And you revisit them from mission to mission. At the very least the environments are big enough and the challenge ramps up enough to keep me interested from start to finish.
Styx is still a nimble little bastard, capable of climbing and skulking around. Sometimes the game just doesn’t agree with you on where you want to go, which was a problem in MOS as well, but it only happened to me a few times throughout the game.
The combat is, uh, I don’t know, I played on Goblin, my choices for getting caught were to run or to die. Just like a real life dangerous encounter.
Please do not tease me, I am very squishy.
There are several categories you are rated on ranging from how fast you complete your objective to how many people you do or do not kill in your missions. The better you do, the more experience you get to upgrade Styx’s skills. Useful abilities like seeing footsteps through walls and vomiting out a naked, dumber version of yourself.
I feel like my friend conjured this game into existence or something. Ew.
This time around you can also play Co-op! Hurray! As long as one of you is alive, you can spawn the other one at the cost of half your current health. It makes the game a bit easier, but you might be reloading anyway if you’re a perfectionist.
Between SOD and MOS, which one do I like more? MOS, probably. I liked Shard of Darkness well enough, but there are some things that kind of irked me, at least story wise.
The game just kind of ends, there really isn’t a finale after the last boss. I might have to play Of Orcs And Men to get the full story, I’m not entirely sure.
There’s also a part where a character is
killed off. Only for them to just kind of decide against it and bring them back the very next mission, only for them to not matter for the rest of the story even though they were pretty important up until now.
Styx is also kind of just a template of his former self. He’s not as charming or funny as he was in the last game, but he’s still kind of a goofy idiot, so I did enjoy playing the game as him.
The only reason it took me so long to play Shard of Darkness is because I actually forgot it existed. I got it on sale for about six dollars, which is a steal for a game like this. If you like stealth games with a bit of jank, you’ll probably like Shard of Darkness.
A lot of people were hard on it, but Master of Shadow was, like, Surprise of the year 2016, so its understandable.
I hope I get to see Styx again in the future. I don’t want to say goodbye just yet. I still have Of Orcs And Men to go, which, depending on which way Cyanide Studios in the future, this might be my goodbyes to a character that I’ve kind of grown to love over the years.
Goodbye Styx, you weird looking toilet creature.

(Very Minor) SPOILER Comment
My only issue was with the ending of the game. It was so abrupt that I had to check if the ending cutscene glitched out or something. Maybe they overestimated their budget and left a chunk out, who knows. Not the end of the world, but it was a bit surprising.
All in all the game was great in terms of graphics, story, and gameplay, it's just what I wanted to see after the first Styx game. Reeeaally hoping Cyanide makes another Styx someday... if they do I'll certainly be looking forward to it :)
In the meantime, time to attempt goblin mode...

- Enemies bodies are stuck in between platforms whilst they are walking/running
- Enemies walk into each other depending on how you distract/alert them
- Physical combat mechanics felt clunky and outdated
- Story was short and ended in a really abrupt manner
I wasn't particularly a fan of the ending at all since it ended on a cliffhanger and so abruptly. There was so much missing, it needed something big for the game to have ended ended well. Apart from that though, I really enjoyed my first experience with Styx.

Players' exploration and utilisation of the game's interesting features ought to be rewarded, not penalised.
That said, Be warned : this is an Stealth Game. You don't like this type of game ? Go away. Important point to note however: the game is only voiced in English (but the texts are translated into several languages). Personally, it does not bother me (I even prefer that), but be warned that if you do not like English voices ... you will have no choice here. That is the price to pay when you can not afford to have voices for each country. So English only, but the voices are good anyway.

CONS:
If you played the first styx game and you found the story to be interesting and the character engaging, then Styx 2 will probably disappoint you a lot. Not only is there nothing of interest the characters are way worse, with styx himself being basically a caricature of his former self, with constantly trying to be funny and 4th-wall breaking, to a point of annoyance. The overall variety of map design was also lacking in my opinion. Stxy 1 had this nice contrast of darker, more dirty places, with nice clean palaces. Styx 2 however seem to mostly consists of dirty looking towns and castles with only 1 exception (level 1, zone 2). Also the overall length of the game was reduced, with most levels only conisting of 2 zones (instead of styx 1s 4) and the level repitition is felt a little more in this game. In Styx 1 the level repedition mostly made logical sense from following the story (for example: you break into a prison and then you have to leave the same way… so levels were played the opposite way with different enemies). In Styx 2 the level repidition mostly comes out of nowhere and is not as niceley done as in styx 1. They also added bossfights in styx 2, which feel fresh and unique and add to the variety of gameplay, but since the game is otherwise not as diverse in levels I would have wished for more levels instead. Styx 2 also included a crafting mechanic which doesnt add a lot to the game. Because of this crafting mechanic they also had to add a bunch of items to pick up in each level which makes it a little harder to identify the collectable medallions. Also Styx 2 doesnt include the nicely drawn concept art designs for some cutscenes, maps and menu screans, which i found to be a pity.
PROS:
Styx 2 fixed some annoying mechanics in Styx 1 like the autoclimb of edges (as long as you didnt hold the jump key), which i found to be a utterly pointless annoyance. The level design allows for the worlds to be traversed in way more ways than in Styx 1 which also increases the replayablilty. This however was reduced through the fact that you have to replay nearly each level anyways before finishing the game. Styx 2 seem to focus way more on players choice, while in Styx 1 some abilities had to be used in order to procress (like invisibility or cloning) I dont remember a single instance where I had to use it in Styx 2. The challenges set in each level, such as collecting all medallions or completing the game in a certain time are better presented in Styx 2. I didnt even notice that such a thing was present in the first game until I went back and checked. They also added a skill which lets you see medallions from far away, which I think is necessary because finding all 10 medallions in a zone is more frustrating than anything else and I think the challenge should rather be to get those medalions without being seen than to find them. The enemy AI is also a lot better. Just simply hiding in a closet or a pot does not simply save you when the enemy has noticed a sound (orange alarm), while in Styx 1 they had to have already noticed you in order to search for you.
Neutral:
Styx 2 is arguable a lot easier than Styx 1 with the enemies detecting you a lot less, fewer enemies and more possibilies to traverse the worlds and to hide (both of these I compared the highest difficulty). This can be seen as better or worse. For one it reduces the challenge, but I found it nice to play a stealth game were I really felt advantaged over my oponents. It also opens up the possibility to artificually increase the difficulty by playing barehanded or completing a mission without ever being detected(and never reloading), which is way too much of an annoyance in Styx 1 (at least in goblin difficulty).
So overall, Styx 2 is a more refined stealth game as Styx 1 with some of the annoying things removed and better level design. However the story and level variety was reduced and some questionable new things were added, such as a crafting mechanic and boss fights. I would say that Styx 2 is a worse game than Styx 1, but it is still a very fine stealth game and I can only recommend it to any stealth fan. But maybe wait for a sale.

If you intend on playing it co-op then I think it's worth a purchase since it makes the games flaws way more forgiving. You died because of the janky climbing system? well just spawn on your friend. Playing co-op really delivers a really unique experience. Being able to coordinate stealth kills is thrilling and very unique as far as I'm aware since co-op stealth games don't seem to be all that common. The game is hilarious, although I admit mostly it is unintentional due to it's janky ass physics.
Bottom line: avoid at all costs if solo but worth a purchase if co-op.

By far the worst thing about this game are the two boss fights, unavoidable action sequences that strip away the core stealth gameplay in favor of largely tedious dodging puzzles. On the bright side, the second is much less irritating than the first, with plenty of checkpoints scattered throughout a moderately sized gauntlet of deathtraps that make some token use of stealth mechanics, and in both cases the buggy game code will occasionally trivialize the encounter by rendering the bosses helpless.
There are plenty of other gripes, though. Many different controls are consolidated to the same key, which can prove bothersome in many cases where one wishes to do one thing and instead ends up doing another. The breaking of the fourth wall isn't as cute as the developers probably thought it was. Some game systems, particularly the poison mechanic, occasionally just don't seem to work as intended.
The ending caught me entirely by surprise - the way the story was heading I was sure I had at least a handful of missions left. I wonder if the developers ran out of funding or time? This could also explain the recycled levels throughout the second act. There are a few decisions you are invited to make over the course of the game, but none of them matter.
All these problems are a particular shame because there is potential here. The game has some solid stealth gameplay and a wonderfully unique artistic design. I hope Cyanide manage to put this setting and character to better use in the future, because it could definitely be something special.

Each level gives plenty of ways to go about and dealing with your enemy, combined with skill tree's, adding more options making your experience much more fun.
Few bugs here and there and reused levels, nothing game or immersion breaking.
Playing each hour gave so much fun and for the price on sale makes this game an absolute steal.

2/5 - Fun but unfinished.
_
Story shabby
Characters shallow but fun
Maps neat but theres like 3 of them
Stealth pretty good!
Combat bad.
Skill tree/Upgrades decent
Music pretty good
Graphics actually pretty great
Missions gave you a lot of freedom. Fun to explore and just go nuts killing everything. Not frustrating on Normal. The AI wasn't bad - Important in stealth games. Tutorial neglected to cover SEVERAL abilities you start out with (LIKE A LOT).

There are also items to aid us in our quest, like the familiar throwing knife to deal with unarmored enemies, or the pocket sand to extinguish torches, and some new ones like the acid trap, which kills any enemy, and dissolves the body so others don’t find it. The major new aspect of these is that we no longer just find them, we have to craft them from raw marerials found in the levels. This was a really good idea, since hunting for materials gives another reason to explore the locations. And explore we can, since compared the the first game, the levels are bigger, and less linear with more paths. Apart from doing secondary objectives and collecting materials, there are also so-called Tokens to collect. This is also better than in the first game, since there we had to collect all of them to get rewards, but now we get some xp even for getting half of them. Another reason to thoroughly look around the levels.
I mentioned xp: the small rpg system from the first game returns, allowing us to upgrade Styx’s abilities from the experience points we get from completing objecitves. Most of these are actual, meaningful addition to the gameplay, and some of them are quite clever. For example, one ability allows us to craft a clone cocoon, which can be thrown and it spawns a clone at the point of impact. Another ability allows us to teleport into our clone. Combining these we can significantly increase our mobility, which I felt was cool.
So the gameplay is really fine, with one exception: there are two bossfights. You kinda have to use stealth in those too, but you can’t save, and it’s easy to die, so they end up being quite annoying, although having the right abilities can help a lot. I rarely encountered bugs, only one where I had to reload a save to be able to complete a secondary objective. I’d also mention objective markers. The game is designed around them, so you have to use them, otherwise you can’t really find where to go. I don’t consider this a problem, even though it would’ve been better to have, like, a map and compass or something.
The story was entertaining as well, although not as good as in the first game, but kept me interested until the end. There I received a big slap unfortunately, since the game ends in a massive cliffhanger, and there’s no Styx 3, so that’s kinda disappointing. The writers tried to be funny in this, and while the fourth wall breaking humor was pretty bad, the rest of game managed to make me smile often, despite the humor being quite crass and juvenile. Styx is an a**hole, but he’s an entertaining a**hole, at least he was for me.
All in all, the game is a big improvement over Master of Shadows, and in my opinion is actually a good stealth game. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes the genre.

What the game does not do well is the aspect about stealing stuff. While there are some things you need to take and the game also have tokens you can collect for extra credit on the mission. You wont get the clepto vibe you might have gotten via other games like the Thief series. The port to PC also has some issues. Mouse lag, fixed via turning off vsync, mouse sensitivity is too low, fixed via setting ingame to max and adding a higher dpi profile on your mouse software or increasing the Windows mouse movement and bloom from hell that does not have an option, but you can turn off via .ini edit. Just search the forums for it because its not the regular .ini edit, but a Unreal Engine .ini edit where you need to add stuff. Ironically the game looks allot better with bloom off.
Overall a game one should consider if one likes stealth games because its pretty good and there are few modern options out there. The game has a decent price during sales as well. One of the few games I actually 100%ed.

I hate when dev teams take a console game and port it to PC without any thought of it being on a PC. The controls/animations and camera are very clunky on PC. Could not do anything without dying non stop (just from falls) with the sluggish controls. I bet it was a great game on console, but not so good on PC.

The game could use about 5x more dialogue. The dialogue is sparse and full of non-sequiturs and does absolutely the minimal to move the story forward. It would be nice to have more of a sandbox approach if they were ever to get the budget. This might require adding friendly NPCs and having locations where Styx was not considered a threat by the locals but that could be interesting.
If a sequel were similar I would want to see WAY MORE variation in NPC behavior and strategies. The AI need to be smarter which would give the player more opportunities to fool them and so forth. As it stands every NPC basically reacts exactly the same so the strategy never really changes even with the addition of some new abilities. The result is this game gets really repetitive really quickly and then halfway through starts recycling the maps .. which only makes it worse....
I love the character and concepts and I hope there is a sequel with a much larger budget to do Styx justice.
Edit: the ending of the game was really bad....

Styx is an imperfect stealth game, but if you can play through it's flaws it can be an enjoyable experience
Story (Spoiler free)
Styx himself in the beginning is insufferable, let's not sugarcoat the fact of the matter. Constant references to popular stealth games can be funny, but in this case I feel like it's rather overused and can distract more than break the 4th wall as intended.
Other characters are pretty underdeveloped but make sense, and there are some stand out characters that really make the story pop out.
If you play games for their stories though, don't expect much though, I found it really dissatisfying.
Gameplay
Oh boy. Now this is where I am them most conflicted about my feelings. Gameplay feels fluid when on the ground, but the parkour still is rather rigid and unresponsive. It is not as bad as in Styx Deadly Shadows, but I still, even after 20+ hours didn't get comfortable with it. But other than that, Styx controls awesomely and if you can get a hold of the controls you can start doing some really impressive and wacky stunts.
The AI however, is horrible. This being a stealth game, requires at least a decent AI. In this game it is anything but. I have encountered numerous glitches and bugs that really broke the game and in many cases required a quickload to my previous save. Being stuck in level geometry, in physics objects, not moving until I got close (even after maxing my settings.)
If you can get through the initial barrier of bad AI and bad parkour, this game can be a really fun experience though and anyone who loves stealth, will find something to love about this game.
Environment and graphics
This is by far the biggest improvement from the last game. The graphics and environment are fabulous and spacious, the world is interconnected and vast, even though most of it is empty space.
It is a lot of fun to explore and experiment with all objects and ways to kill the NPCs, the AI can make this either awesome, infuriating, hilarious or mix of the three.
Should you buy this game?
YES, GIVE YOUR MONEY TO CYNIDE SO THEY MAKE STYX 3!
All jokes aside, this game is very imperfect, and can be super infuriating if you don't get used to the jankyness of it. But inside it is a loveletter to stealth as a genre and a fun one at that.

Grim dark/High fantasy. Some of the NPC's are just very lovely, but not in a tawdry way.
The game does things that I have wanted to see happen for years. The first real level is on a
Pseudo-Victorian (Steampunk?) Airships.... and they MAKE GOTHIC STEALTH work in THAT setting.
The next level? An elven fortress inside a mountain.... with a giant door for AIRSHIPS.
It just keeps getting better, and I don't mind the grotesque number of deaths I am experiencing.
Will update.
Worth it at full price and more.
Man I wish this Studio could do a game with a AAA budget.

Let's get the obvious things out of the way first. It's a stealth game. Not a stealth-action game like Dishonored. Pure stealth, which means that you're not meant to fight fair. The combat system is very basic as a result, and on the highest two difficulties it's outright disabled. If you get caught, you either flee or turn invisible.
Furthermore, it's a 3D game with platforming. A lot of it. It's not particularly hard, but the movement controls are not fantastic. Movement is merely fine.
The levels are decently large and can be explored pretty much at will, which is great... but there are two things to note. First is that most of the levels of the first half of the game are revisited in the second half, albeit with different objectives, new enemies and minor changes to the actual levels themselves. And second is that the levels can be somewhat hard to navigate through. This is rarely an issue, but it's noticeable in one particular level, which takes place in a mine. The early part of that level can be a bit of a pain, though it doesn't last long.
The game consists of ten levels. A single-stage intro mission and tutorial, eight two-stage missions and a final one-stage mission. That last one is linear, and the tutorial is mostly linear as well. The rest are (as mentioned above) freely explorable while you're in the level.
Enemy AI is relatively smart for a stealth game. Once they are alerted (not necessarily by you, since they can alert each other as well), they will no longer eat or drink, thus preventing you from poisoning them. They check possible hiding places. They can track you to a limited degree if you turn invisible. At the highest difficulties, it's perceptive enough to offer a decent challenge.
The enemy variety is actually pretty good in this game. You have the standard humans, dwarves, elves, trolls, flying insects, walking insects, acid-spitting plants, exploding mushrooms and a golem that shoots lasers. No orcs outside of cutscenes, which I found disappointing. Many of them have special tricks as well. For example, the dwarves are capable of finding you by scent if you get close enough. The walking insects, the roabies, have extremely keen hearing and can detect you even while crouch-walking. The flying insects can see you from greater distances than any other enemy. Armoured enemies can't be killed by your regular blade or darts, requiring poison, acid mines or other non-standard means of murdering them. And the enemies with quartz weapons can get fucked.
Stealth gameplay is fairly solid, as should be expected. You can make noise to distract or attract enemies. You can put out torches, though passing enemies can reignite them. You can make use of a decent number of hiding spots, should you ever need them. You can make a controllable copy of yourself, and you can later weaponize it or teleport to it. You can turn invisible, though this rapidly drains mana that doesn't regenerate by itself. You are very mobile, allowing you to get almost anywhere. You have a small array of items to use, including the mentioned acid mines. You can poison food, which doesn't require an item.
Equipment is quite simple. You have an outfit and a knife. You can pick between the standard knife and standard outfit, a version of either found in certain levels, a version of either unlocked via the skill tree, a version of either that's available as DLC... and you can decide to leave one or both behind. You can craft gear from a handful of materials at a crafting bench, and that is about it.
Now, the skill tree. Completing objectives in levels earns you skill points, and these can be spend at special tables at the hideout and in some levels to unlock new abilities. There are 35, spread over five paths. If you have quartz, which is obtained at the end of levels 3 and 4, and as optional objectives in 5 through 9, you can use one of them and a ton of skill points to unlock one of the two mutually exclusive final abilities at the end of a path. No, you do not need to unlock all seven regular skills in a path to get the ultimate ability. Four is enough. And if you have an ultimate in each path, along with the last two pieces of quartz (which requires finishing the game), you can unlock Flow Control, which allows your normally finite mana to slowly regenerate for free. Note that you can refund any ability to get the skill points you spend on it back. Refunding a skill has no further cost.
Story-wise, the game is rather... poor. Styx: SoD is very much gameplay over story, and it shows. Don't expect to be moved to tears.
Visuals and music are fine, though the levels get a bit dark.
Something something, imagine I wrote an amazing final paragraph to close this review. Thank you for reading, and have a nice day, night, weekend, holiday, nuclear apocalypse or end of the Universe.

The good:
- Graphics is improved from last Styx game
- The customization is even stronger than last game
- You can disable skill to get back points to open something else if you aren't satisfied with your choice (no need to hard save points and extremely important for the quartz skills, allowing to switch them and never locking you into a decision you regret)
- The stealth experience is as strong as previous Styx game
- The gameplay is really fun and the item you get on later missions allow for some really fun (and broken) stuff to mess around in post game (funny that negative reviews point at those combinations as a ruin of the game when you need to finish the game to unlock said combination or you don't have the item/quartz for it)
The bad:
- Level recycling is massive and unlike previous Styx there isn't really added parts to make the level feel different (except for mission 8 part 2 that add a small new part to the level) making later missions inherently easier (stronger enemies means nothing if you know all the paths in the level from before)
- The story is a step back in quality compared to the previous Styx game and
the ending is quite cliffhanger and not really satisfying
The neutral:
- The combat is still horrible. While by itself is a negative it's a way to promote doing assassinations and not get caught which I find very nice for a stealth game.
- The game is quite short (my timer is high cause I searched the thief tokens while not breaking the Shadow and Mercy insignia... And as you can imagine, it take a lot of time to look around without killing enemies or causing alerts)
Overall a solid and fun stealth game, 7/10

+) Simple and straightforward menu.
+) Easy interface.
+) Apt environment designs.
+) Distinguishable graphics.
+) Good and not too heavy story.
+) Interesting characters. One was particularly interesting. Shame I didn't get to interact with this npc more.
+) Shockingly well constructed missions. Wow. Hahaha
-) Mouse sensitivity setting was poor. Very poor.
-) Parkour system was a bit sloppy.
-) Jumping was weird. Speed wise.
-) Every time I moved a body, crouching status got canceled.
-) W key input becomes null once you tab or something like that.
-) In a very hectic part of the mission, the indicator comment starts too slow.
-) Save rule, that I get. But making checkpoint rule same as that was absurd. Thank god there was Restart option.
-) While ledge moving, camera keeps viewing downwards. It was irritating. Combine that with muddy mouse sensitivity, that itself is another challenge. Hahaha dang.

On one hand, it is a good stealth game
But on the other, it has way more flaws than the original (master of shadows) had.
I have almost 2 pages worth of issues, but most of them are minor. The major problems however, are really dumb/impactful.
1: The crafting system was fuckin unnecessary, and its pointless, give me back the strategically placed item locations from the first game, and get this tomb raider shit out of here!
2: The tarzan rope is fucking awful. Its inconsistent, hard to control, and it never swings the direction i want it to
3: I fucking hate what they did to the 'stealth-o-vision'. First, it no longer has the added benefit of also being nightvision, which is a problem because there are a fair amount of crevices where its so fuckin dark i can't see shit without this. Second, the 'stealth-o-vision' turns itself off if you move. WHY? Why do i have to stay still for it to stay on? I want to have toggle it at my will!
4: The game is really short, like, about 6-9 hours long. If you've played a styx game before it will take less than that. Its really easy to just avoid anyone in this game. I payed 8€ for this, which is okay, but this is definitely not worth anything over 20€.
5: 3 achievements are broken and never unlocked for me. The three achievements are: Trigonal elven system, the gob in a box, and oh my gob!
6: The ending is a fucking spit in the face! The first game had a nice conclusion, that tied things together, but here, thats not the case. Throughout the game you meet two characters. One is on your side, the other one starts out as hostile. The 'friendly' character is very well written, and just disappears for no reason at the 3rd to last mission. No conclusion to her or anything, which is sad, because she carried this game (along with styx's fantastic voice acting).
The hostile character on the other hand, becomes your ally in the 2nd half of the game, with no build-up or whatever, styx and him are suddenly just pals, and at the ending they turn on each other for no reason, AGAIN! Not like it matters, because thats how the game ends. No final fight with him the now hostile person, they stare into each others eyes, and the credits immediately roll.
Thats it, no conclusion. Some fucking golem that appears literally 15 minutes earlier serves as the final boss.
What happened to 'her'? Why did 'he' turn on styx again? Why can't styx go after
lyssiril
? Oh, right, the sequel needs to have a place to start. UGH.
TL;DR: Shit/non-existent ending.

Genre: Third Person Stealth
The Good:
+ The levels look good with decent graphical options.
+ The story is good and does not require any previous knowledge of the other games.
+ Styx is a wise cracking character, with surprisingly good dialogue. Normally I am not a fan of those types of characters but it works incredibly well for this game
+5 skill trees that allow you to become more stealthier, kill better, improve skills or just craft better items.
+ Each level can be replayed to get the 4 main insignias, speed, stealth, no killing, and collect all trophies. These provide further incentive to replay the levels.
+ quick save button on the controller. I really wish developers offered this option more, as it is incredibly convenient.
The Average:
+/- Like the first game, the later levels are simply recycled levels from the first half of the game. You do get new objectives and start off in a different location than previously; I am assuming this was done due to a limited budget.
+/- The level design is a bit mixed. The outdoor levels are really well done, providing good alternatives and encouraging exploration and trying new routes to get to an objective. The indoor environments, although provides multiple ways to navigate the environment, I found the areas to be somewhat confusing to navigate and frustrating to move around.
+/- Stealth genre is always difficult to do a proper climatic ending and this game doesn’t succeed very well. The last level is decent but ends abruptly with a poor ending with very little climatic build up.
The Bad:
- I encountered one nasty bug in mission 3. I had to restart the zone and replay a section of the mission over again to get by. It is a bug that many gamers have experienced and still hasn’t been fixed.
Conclusion:
Focus Home Interactive is one of the last publishers to go after the ‘b-tier’ market. Styx is not as good as some of the heavy hitters in the genre but it can hold its own and for those that like the genre will find a good enough game here to enjoy.
