 • Strategische, rundenbasierte Kämpfe in 2D-Ansicht – ähnlich wie bei den klassischen „Heroes of Might and Magic“-Spielen.

The game is fantastic! I like the gameplay and the art style. Very atmospheric and total feel of Lovecraft stories. I see that many hate combat system, but I like it. If you are not prepared good, you will lose, its the Lovecraftian world! Best way to deal with combat is to avoid it. You have special spaces on a battle map very you can escape (they appear usually from 3. combat round) and you can upgrade your characters to use this option better. Conversation options are very good! Real story feel. Creators did a good job on world building and setting.
If you are fan of Lovecraft mytos you will love this. If not, at least try free demo than decide.
Give me two tomy guns and Cthulhu is dead! :D

So after I finished the game, my only negative critic is that the game is too short. Would like if the game would be at least twice in time gameplay.

Ok so I said thumbs out, but only because I don't want to give it a thumbs down. I think there a lot of bugs, some quest lines can't be started or completed with or without the command line. Things seem to just happen at random, not sure if I should restart my game or what.

OTHER THEN THAT

I really do like it! It reminds me of the old table top campaigns me and my friends used to play! It is not forgiving if you over look detail, the atmosphere is 100% on point for a Lovecraftian game. The story is very in depth and it's almost like reading a tale. If you can over look the bugs, PLAY FOR THE DIALOGUE AND STORYLINES!!!

While it's expected that the game would be somewhat difficult and unforgiving to fit with the dark theme, I find the player is just too constantly punished for trying to advance.

1. Combat isn't rewarding since you only get loot for beating fights. It's mostly trash and the amount of stuff is low (you'll likely get more from random scavenging).
2. On top of your health, sanity and hunger to manage (plus that of your companions), you get ANGST overtime (evil/bad exp) which goes towards getting faults you're forced to take that debuff your character permanently. You can't avoid getting ANGST once in combat even if you flee and there's even random events from map exploration that give ANGST. There's literally an early quest where you meet an NPC (Keelan) being hunted by ghosts and instead of a cut scene where he's killed you're forced into a fight to see him butchered. The result is predetermined and you get ANGST along with sanity damage just for doing an essential step of a quest. Does that honestly sound fun?
3. There's no balance. Why would combat be made so punishing when there are builds / character types that focus on combat. It does not make sense to present combat as being something viable to engage in for how little worth there is to fighting. I'm not joking when I say that besides loot rewards being garbage and annoying ANGST, the first enemies you likely will encounter throw rocks at you for more damage than you do shooting them with a gun. Btw they're normal crazy humans. Also, there's friendly fire and you will shoot your allies in front of you. Oh, and RNG sucks because why not.

Combat, and everything related is just god awful. Doesn't help that your character will be relatively weak regardless of their creation.
Last thing I noticed is the game just presents a quiz to you once in a while or some event that a new player not using a guide would likely not do correctly and so (you guessed it) more nasty outcomes with health and sanity loss.

The concept for the game is interesting and ANGST could be nice but the delivery is just too harsh. The overwhelming punishment with no rest (good luck resting without getting ambushed) is frustrating and it makes you feel like there's no point in playing since it's not enjoyable. If possible I'd refund in current state.

Absolutely amazing game. Most lovecraftian game of them all. It's just sheer depression and insanity.

Sadly it was never finished and ends on a cliffhanger. Damn shame but I still recommend this game if you can get it cheap. What is there is really fun. Just know that it's like going to watch Season 1 of some TV show you know got cancelled. Hopefully one day we gonna get a sequel but till then this is it.

What a complete disappointment.
The game starts off so great, and I couldnt figure out why it wasnt rated higher.
Then suddenly the combat spikes out of nowhere, and it feels like theres really no skill or tactic, and the fact that I tried to make a scientist build worked against me. It feels like there's a particular build you have to do to make it through. I don't know. Role playing should be about options.
It's a real shame; becuase the look and the writing of the story is so good -- but the combat is complete garbage. I like a challenge; but come on. So so disappointing.

If you're a fan of Lovecraft you might enjoy this a fair bit. I certainly did. However, it has a super abrupt ending (Due to being unfinished and scrapped early?), and while it gives an illusion of choice throughout the game it seems rather linear in the follow through.

Unless you really love Lovecraftian stuff to the point where you'll accept an unfinished ending in a game, I would not recommend it. If you are fine with that though, it's a good time.

The Good: The ambiance is incredible, everything from the art to the sound to the writing. The roleplaying opportunites make it worth playing through more than once even!

The Bad: Combat always ended up feeling.. somehow boring AND deadly? Also some interactable object and doors were a little funky and had to be moved around to hit at just the right angle to use.

The Middle: I'm getting burned out on the nihilistic grimdark universes and bad ending only video games, so this definetly is just me. If you are a fan of this type of world, or Lovecraftian lore in general, ignore this. It just felt very... why bother? There's no real outcome your character can change, no one they can really help. Hell, it felt like every sympathetic quest giver ended up being dead by the time you finish helping them! It just left a sort of bad taste in my mouth.

the combat is atrociously slow. It drags the entire game down and made me quit purely on that. I've played slow games, but I've never felt so stifled as I go through each combat turn. I was hoping an update or mod would come out that would allow me to speed up combat but it has never come. So, sadly, I'm not recommending this no matter what the rest of the game is like. Though from the reviews this isn't the only problem they refuse to touch or address.

Overall, I'd say a 7/10.

This game is fun for people who like dark mystery and quests that require you to solve puzzles. I prefer that side of the game over the battles but you can make characters with attributes that allow you to avoid unnecessary fights. However, if you like that then great and you can make characters who will excel in fighting. There are different ways you can complete puzzles depending on the type of character you make which adds more depth to this game. I really enjoyed the trading system in the game and the mob as they really help add to the atmosphere and sense of danger.

Personally, I think early and mid-game are very good but then the late game pulls it downhill. By the time I had reached the end, I was ready for it. It goes from atmospheric madness and puzzles to solve quests for the remaining people still in Arkham, to over-the-top creatures everywhere with little for you to actually do that isn't just laid out for you by the game. I had already read people saying that the ending isn't very good and seemed rushed so I was prepared for the disappointment, however it is still a shame because the earlier game was so much better.

I got this game on sale for about 80% off so I don't mind the disappointing ending. I would still recommend the game because overall it is fun and interesting but you should probably wait for it to be on sale so you don't feel so cheated by the end.

I'm really trying to give it a chance because it is a cool setting and I like the artwork, but this game is rough. The combat is poorly designed and extremely clunky, the game crashes a lot and there are a ton of bugs that still need fixed. Unless you can find this game for something like 80-90% off I wouldn't recommend buying it.

Gamebreaking bug that is blocking story progression apparently is still in the game. You will get devoured by the street even though you are wearing hazmat suit..
IF not that bug i would give high rating review to this game. However not fixing critical blocker from production deserves 1/10.

It's mixed bag. I like it so far but it's certainly not quite the Lovecraft RPG I was hoping for. The mood is on point but it feels like a large demo rather than full complete game. I'm sure the team wanted to do some thing grand and robust but I think it should have gone the early access route. Regardless I think it's worth a play but focus more on the RPG'ing rather than the combat. I can't stress enough how much the combat is both uninteresting and unrewarding. I understand that the game is meant to be hard and dark but I didn't enjoy the combat at all. I much prefer the skill checks and conversation elements. Lots of interesting ideas in the game overall. I think this game has a real spark of horror design but just isn't as well done as I'd hope it'd be. It's not a good game to me but it is an interesting game.

If this game were finished and properly bug and play tested it would be a definite recommend but it isn't.
Constant choices that can lock you out of finishing the game, unfinished aspects and game/ progression ending bugs are the norm which is a shame as there is a decent atmosphere, mystery and art style.
Sadly the chance of this changing seems low the developers have moved on to another game and the last patch was over a year ago.
Life's to short to waste on broken games, avoid.

SCAM ALERT!

The game is broken. All my savegames disappeared after 16 hours of gameplay.
Yesterday I tried playing the entire game from the beginning. And guess what happened today's morning? All my saves gone again.

The developer does not respond to my querries, they did not respond at all.

And my refund request got rejected. I feel SCAMMED.
So think twice before wasting your money - I didn't

EDIT: I described the problem to Steam, and they granted my refund. According to the received note, it is an exception, so be careful, because you may have less luck - I only exceptionally got refunded.

So I've finally beat this game.

What can I say? its one of the weirdest games I have ever experienced in a good if not a bit cringe way...
Going to start with the good.

The biggest highlight this game got going for it in my opinion is by far the atmosphere. It just feels Lovecraftian at hearth. Its misterious, dark, ominous, horrorfying, hopeless, insane and unknown... What makes the atmosphere of the game? The art style, the writing, soundtrack and specially the sound effects. From anything to the footsteps to sounds of the ocean, to the laughs of maniacs, its pretty amazing. Probably the core of what makes the atmosphere of this game so great.

Also yes this is a horror game. But the game doesn't have jumpscares or sequences where you have to run away from a scary monster. But then how can it terrify? I actually found myself feeling scared and uneasy after playing for a feel hours because of the atmosphere of the whole thing. The sounds, the ambiance, the world building, the characters, the mistery of the place where you are, the horrible scenes that happen through out the game, all of this contribute to a slow decent into fear. Of course you got to immerse yourself in for that to work. For me it wasn't hard. The horror aspect of the game is great for the most part.

The narrative/writing is also a strong element of the game. It is really fun going around talking to everyone that you can find to see what they have to say and what your dialog options are. Is not perfect by any means though. It starts off really strong and unfortunally feels very rushed and kinda stupid by the third act.

The game itself is hard to describe, its technically a tatical turn based RPG game with survival elements (crafting, having to sleep and eat food). But it plays more like a point and click movie? or book should I say. I saw someone saying how this game is basically a boardgame brought to life. Anyway the game is really weird and I guess thats the point. Its weirdness contributes to the whole Lovecraftian theme.

The art style is quite unique. Initially I was apprehensive about getting the game because of the graphics. They looked so strange and cringe to me. All characters look like walking sticks and some of the monsters look like they have been drawn by a kid. But thanks to steam refund I thought to myself ''hey why not?'' So I've tried the game to see If I would like it. And what do know? I end up enjoying the art style. It looks hand drawn, and for the most part it looks quite good, very detailed and fits the atmosphere. But is not perfect. Like I said, some things like some enemy types look like a kids drawing! even I could do better!. Also the fact that the game limits itself to this handdrawn graphic style, means that when things need to get more actiony and fancy. It tends to end up looking really lackluster. Its a style that works well with a slowburn atmosphere. But ends underwhelming and too cartoony otherwise.

The combat feels a little out of place in a game like this, but is not bad in my opinion. Its classic turn based tatic RPG combat. But it feels really slow. And the odds for the most part are against you. One interesting aspect about it is the fact that you don't have to kill everything to win in this game. You just have to endure. Just kill enough enemies or survive enough rounds in order to win by having a safe escape. Regular escape will drain your sanity. Safe escapes will count as a win. There's also various tatics you can use. You can choose a meele approach, or stay away under cover with a gun. There are a bunch of items that can be used to buff yourself in combat and also spells.

Probably the thing that I liked the most about the game are all the direct Lovecraft references. If you are a fan, I guarantee that some of them are definitely going to make you smile! I don't want to spoil much. But things like movies being referenced ,whole quests that are basically retellings of classic Lovecraft tales and Lovecraft's WIFE yes his wife looking for him around town are out there in the game and they are really awesome. And what I love the most about these references is that they don't feel out of place and forced. They are actually well integrated withing the story.

Now lets get to the Bad part.....

Well the first thing I got to complaing is that this game gives you the ilusion that you will have a lot of choices to make, and that they will change the outcome of the game. It starts with the character creation. Its quite complex. You can choose your gender. Age of the character, profession, and even belief system. And all of these to some degree do have an impact on your combat stats and dialog options. But ultimately, the outcome is the same. The ending will be same. The quests are going to end up the same. Yes you can come to the end of the quest through diferent paths but overall the game feels linear and boring in this aspect. Your choices don't matter in this game. There aren't multiple endings.

Now lets talk about the game's mechanics. So this game got the ''Dark Souls'' thing going on for it. By this I mean that the game wants you to be in this constant position of utter suffering where you are never under control and the odds are always stacked against you. Thats fine for the most part by me, I like challenge, and considering you are just a human being interacting with a world where horrorfying lovecraftian god-like entities are running around it makes sense. But it can get really annoying with the madness mechanic. So you have a sanity meter. You can refil it by resting, choosing dialog options that regards your belief system, and taking drugs. But no matter what you do, you WILL eventually get mad, and when you get mad, you get negative perks. You can get mad multiple times, which means that the longer you play the more negative perks you will get. As if things in the game aren't already hard enough, now you will have to constantly deal with your crazy character that will panic and choose to not atttack, run away and hit itself. I don't mind losing because the monsters are too strong, or due to poor estrategy. But loosing because my character is acting like bad luck dice rolls is just flat out frustating and stupid.

Also speaking of madness, while the lovecraftian atmosphere is on point for the most part... I do think that the developers tried too hard at times, almost everybody in this game is so mean spirited and foul mouthed. The game's dialog is full of F bombs and vulgar language. It made me think while playing... ''Why Am I trying so hard to keep my sanity meter while everybody in this town is batshit crazy?'' I mean I know that the theme of madness, despair, decay and depression is a big part of what makes lovecraft. But I do feel that the devs went overboard with it at times. It just made it look and sound edgy and cringe. Also by the third act of the game, you will interact with a lovecraftian entity. But the thing is, this entity doesn't look or sound lovecraftian at all. It just looks and feels like some sarcastic, pretentious internet troll trying to well.. just troll you. Nothing creepy or lovecraftian about it at all. And thats a major part of the game, that you are supposed to take it seriously. But I just couldn't it. Broke the atmosphere completely to me. Don't understand what were they thinking by putting that thing into the game.

So I guess the last thing I got to complaing about it, is the fact that this game is too short... ''but its a RPG right? that means there must be a bunch of side quests and things to explore right?'' well unfortunally no. Actually the game's doesn't have side quests, every quest is pretty much part of the progression of the story, and every place you have to explore count in the same way. There are few quests, some of the them don't even get finished. Some characters that have a intringing stories, that you wished you could see the end of it, are just left out.

After completing the game, I have to say it is a huge missed potential, and I'm very sorry about it as I can't say I'd recommend this game to anyone, especially at its price point of 20 EUR.
If you want to finish this game, you have to struggle and endure it, you will not complete it. It is very short by the way, I think it can be even done in one sitting if you do not explore everything, skip the side quests (they are few anyway), and do not read the lore in the documents.
In the end, the game looks more like a promising demo than a finished product.

In my opinion this game suffered from two things:
1. Lack of experience among the development/creative team,
2. Lack of funding, especially since its ending is the way it is I just think they ran out of money.

The game has some good points, let me first address those.
- It is very faithful to Lovecraft, it even takes quests straight out of Lovecraft's stories.
- It has some very interesting story points.
- Some of its dialogue is really nicely written.
- Characters and the difficulty seems on point with what Lovecraftian horror usually is.
- Art style should be mentioned, even though I do not like it that much it certainly is very interesting.
- The atmosphere is there, it is even discomforting at some points, but it can become annoying.

Sadly, the bad points simply weight out the good ones, at least for me.
- Game mechanics is very clunky, it does not run well.
- Game is buggy, the latest patch removed the game breaking bugs, but it is still full of minor issues.
- The combat is painfully slow, the animations are too long, you have to wait a lot, enemies get stuck in a loop on some occasions, the game may even crash.
- Character development is very poor as most of the skills and traits you can choose are completely useless.
- There are no explanations about how some stuff works, you literally have to just try it in order to try to understand it.
- Lack of content, everything feels empty, there's no role playing, just a few areas and you just walk and then have an encounter.
- The story itself is not that great, especially if you actually finish the game.

Overall I am very disappointed as the game had potential, it was just poorly executed. I guess this will not receive any updates or DLCs to try and finish the game, so this remains just a huge letdown for me. Sadly, it seems it is pretty tough to create a game set in Lovecraftian setting and to make it good at the same time.

This game is the only turn based RPG based on the Cthulhu mythos on steam right now, and i would say that it is good. If you can ignore the bugs that you will most certainly encounter, it offers a very immersive experience and leaves you yearning for more.

Firstly, the atmosphere of the game is superb. The artwork is excellent and manages to convey the gloomy and dystopian feeling of the setting. The soundtrack is also very good, from the smooth jazz tunes in the bar and the spooky exploration music, to the more intense battle music. The sound effects are very well done as well. There is no voice acting, but you will hear people talking (or murmuring) in the background while you explore. This is unfortunately not done very well, and i had to lower my volume several times because of how annoying and loud this background chatter can be in some areas. Overall though, the design managed to keep me deeply immersed in what was happening and i finished the game in two large sessions of play.

Let's talk combat: The combat serves its purpose, but don't expect to find a deep or highly tactical combat system in this game. I would describe it as pretty basic actually, but is nevertheless fun. Combat is not always the only solution though, and the angst game mechanic actually discourages you from choosing the combat option every time. RNG is involved, so if you don't like these types of games prepare to be a little frustrated. The combat is challenging , but a character with a little investment in combat skills should not have any major trouble, especially if you have some experience with how tactical turn based RPG combat works. I would like to note that the game does not do a very good job describing the combat system and what all the stats and skills do. For example, i could not find anything about the panic mechanic or how mental illnesses develop anywhere, no matter how much i searched.

When you are building your character, there are many ways that you can go, each one offering different solutions to quests than the other. In this regard the developers did an excellent job as you have a lot of options, but not so many that you it can be intimidating or bothersome. The game also rewards you if you roleplay your character well, which is a great feature in my opinion.

About the bugs. There are quite a few of them. The save/ load system is also kind of wonky. For example, in one instance, I saved, smoked some cigarettes until i reached the daily limit then loaded my save. Trying to smoke some cigs again, the game said that i had reached my daily limit, even though i hadn't actually smoked any. Restarting the game fixed it. I had some random crashes here and there, but not too many and far between. I had other bugs which i cant go into in more detail without spoiling the game, but nothing was gamebreaking for me.

The story of the game is truly engaging ( my first play session i actually played until i couldn't focus anymore) but seems a little... incomplete. I don't know if the developers plan on expanding it any further, and the updates i found in a quick search neither confirm or deny it. I guess we will have to wait and see. I can certainly say i would love for them to expand it via dlcs or a sequel, because as i said there are no similar games on steam right now and the game really made me want more!

In conclusion, if you like turn based RPGS you should certainly give this game a go, especially if it is on offer. It has its bugs, but frankly the way the gaming industry is right now, even AAA games come with their share of bugs. The game was certainly made with a lot of care put into it, and is sure to captivate you, especially if lovecraftian horror is your thing.

Kind of recommend it if you love good things in this game and not very annoyed with bad ones.
If devs make second part of game I definitely will buy.

Pros:
Really artistic and unique game, rare (only?) isometric RPG in Lovecraftian universe.
Game sometimes can be very challenging and every victory and trick giving you sense of achievement
Interesting and not always obvious ways to solve quest
Good story
Pretty art-style.

Cons:
Sometimes it have lags or bugs. Annoying!
Some battles are too hardcore. You need to prepare and still hope for good RNG.
Some things are really NOT obvious and game do not give you enough clues.
Story isn't finished (it stops in middle). I hope devs will make next part of game. I think they really have talent and vision.

Despite all the lil glitches and unfinished bits and a sudden ending, this game has a permanent place in my heart. I adore the artstyle, the gameplay, the music, the excellent mix of eldrich themes and stories...

But most importantly

This game makes me wish for a Fallout game set in the Lovecraft universe.

I sadly could not finish this game [got stuck in the unbalanced battle of the Blasted Street and one of my companions decided to leave me there - long story]. Since the game has no real ending anyway, I decided it was time for me to leave for good.

I enjoyed the atmosphere of this game way too much to give it a thumbs down - I was basically living in this game for 2 days, absorbing every inch of the BEAUTIFULLY created dystopian world.
Even if you don't want to play the game, I recommend looking up the cinema cutscene & the beginning scene on YouTube.

If your personal focus is on the art, then you can't hate this game... while, if your focus is on the gameplay, then you probably will.

A thumbs sideways. I think some people will love this game and some people won't. I unfortunately, was one of the ones who didn't love this game.

This game is janky, kind of ugly but artistic, obtuse, frustrating, and interesting. I think there's a certain type of person who loves obtuse and janky RPGs. For those I heartily recommend this game: the setting is one we see too little of, and the story (the little bit I saw of it) was interesting enough. People looking for a straightforward, polished, and non-frustrating experience can probably give this one a pass.

5/10 - Beautiful indie experience dragged down by a multitude of shortcomings

+ Eye candy/genre/setting/ambience sold me. Wonderful & enticing art direction
+ Novelty at each corner engages and thrills
+ Excellent take on Lovecraftian genre with lovely writing and timely characters as a solid backdrop
+ Rare collection of ideas and presentation produces a thrilling on-the-edge presentation
+ Interesting writing; wonderful stylized dialogs la VTM

- Sadistic game design with many gameplay loops masking bad design as 'challenging gameplay'
- Insane uneven difficulty with mind-boggling spikes
- Game's difficulty comes from sanity acting as a main health bar. 'Refills' are limited and horribly balanced
- Stats not clarified, mechanics confusing, basic actions obtuse
- Entire game has a Vaseline filter - thanks
- Combat unsatisfying with mechanics rewarding partial escapes over tactical destruction
- Many characters underused/undeveloped
- Save-scumming required to reduce dissatisfaction and dilute the abrasive taste left behind

- Performance terrible for a tiny game using a creaky top down static view
- Performance horrid with each screen transition taking 10 seconds
- Performance stutters; inputs don't register; all game actions lag
- Performance trophy: worst optimized game since Deus Ex mobile shit

For any fans of Lovecraft/TPT/fallouts/Dark atmospheric games this game has worthwhile content which may prove to be too difficult to reach

Wait for a sale.

So This game is good I'll give it that. Love the characters, mechanics and story. They did this RPG-lovecraftian game some justice. I say some as there are still some large issues at hand.

Why wait for a sale?
1. Bugs! there are a fair share of bugs that soft lock the game in more than a few parts and also random crashes-to-desktop that I've experienced. It's a little hard to enjoy the game as these issues are fairly consistent.
2. This is a 2 part series from what I understand. I guess the amount they got on the kickstarter (which was what they set) wasn't enough? I'm not a 100% on that but the story ends on a cliffhanger and you'll have to wait for part 2 (not a lot of info on part 2)
3. Community engagement and support from the devs is a hit and miss (Mostly a miss it seems but you can see for yourself). So far the bugs that have been reported have not been fixed (the ones I mentioned above). They have recently updated the game only to add language and seem to be ignoring any complaints as the outrage from the consumers is quite real (there's a reason the reviews are mixed).
4. They are currently working on another project, that's fine as plenty of companies do this. Whether or not it's tied to this game I have no idea but without communication from them there is no way to tell when this game will be updated or when part 2 will come out.

Wrapping things up I'm gonna still give this game a recommended but only on sale. $30 US dollars on a game with this many consistent issues and no info on when they will be fixed is far too much (I got this game on a Humble Bundle monthly so it wasn't free but extremely cheap). I still recommend this game if you are a fan of the Cthulhu lore, enjoy fairly detailed RPG's and/or also tolerant of bugs.

a fantastic rpg game for fans of Cthulhu's.It's hard to be disliked by the real zealots of this fascinating universe portrayed by Lovecraft and his followers. For me, I didn't read much about the sub-culture, but I did finish some of those well-known novels like call of Cthulhu and the shadow over Innsmouth. This game is like a combo of all those spectacular concepts extracted from famous novels written by Lovecraft himself. When playing the game, you could sense the eeriness of the unfriendly world. It's a brand-new world, weird and dangerous.Anyway, although the gameplay is not too long, you could find much fun if you keep an eye on everything you have passed by which may then shows you an easter egg!

I'm just so angry with this game. I'm almost as disappointed with this game is as I was with Cyberpunk 2077.

Like 2077, I wanted so hard to love it due to it's atmosphere and style. The character creation had me ready to immerse myself in this world, and when I thought I was really in it, I saw how much nothing there was. It's empty, unfinished, and absolutely teeming with game-breaking progress-impeding bugs.

Getting really tired of coming across promising games that just weren't finished. Shameful.

The story is a decent attempt at tackling cosmic horror, but it suddenly ends. Like that, roll credits. For a cosmic horror game there is a surprising ammount of combat - which is only winnable if your main character is built for it. Diplomacy or other out-of-combat skills are next to useless. Good attempt, poor result.

Did I enjoy this? Yes. Would I recommend this suffering to any of my friends? No.
The visuals and complex character creation really dragged me in. The problem is you don't really need half of them as they give you very little of advantage (ex. biggest pro of psychology is free hookers). Maybe the story isn't long enough for potential of that skill tree? Idk.
This definitely wasn't my first 2D adventure, but I had problems figuring out how to use certain objects or abilities (ex. combat casting).
Combat is really slow. I enjoyed that s... at first, but when I got one of my followers bugged at the end of a long and difficult fight, forcing me to do that again... no more...
I encountered some things that can be used only through certain abilities (dead ancient thing - science/investigation). My skills weren't so high, but I had a expert scientist Sophia in my team - however, these followers were worthy only in fights.
Some quests really hurt. I did the murderer one probably in a wrong order or something, because after doing one of 3 suggested actions, my journal stopped giving me any advice and I had to backtrack the whole process to finish it. Possible, but not enjoyable.

However, story is cool. That theatre scenes are really well done.
It started like game that will replace my life and ended like few weird quests, few slow fights and that's it.

PS: Would still marry The Outsider. #nohomo

A initially slow burn to the story made it hard for me to get invested, but I wanted to explore the narrative. The interface was clunky, but I wanted to explore the narrative. The combat was tedious, and almost felt out of place; but I wanted to explore the narrative. The narrative started to pick up, and I was finally getting the thing I wanted. Then the credits started playing. :|

Unfortunately it has to be a no. Was really enjoying the atmosphere and art, but I encountered a game-breaking bug that prevents me from continuing. The game flat out refuses to let me load any save. And I note that I'm not alone in this particular issue. I'm hoping either the developers/someone else in the community can get me round this in the discussion forum, and I can get past. If that happens almost certainly I'll be turning this recommendation back to a positive as the game world was delightful.

A fun and grim RPG that wonderfully takes the Cthulhu Mythos and turns it into its own. However, this is definitely a case of being about the journey, not the destination. The ending is disappointingly abrupt and anticlimactic. Still, if you love Lovecraft and a spooky adventure, enjoy the ride.

This is a brilliant but vastly flawed RPG. Even with it's faults, which there are many since the game's development did not reach it's full potential, this Lovecraftian tale is one you shouldn't miss. With a very detailed character creator and many hijinks to get caught up in the once backwater town of Arkham now lost to our earthly plane. Immerse yourself in the occult and strange. You'll enjoy it if you like isometric rpgs, you'll love it if you are a fan of Lovecraft.

Final Verdict - Pick it up, but wait for a sale. 6/10

It's a shame that this game was abandoned by the studio. I really enjoyed exploring this world, although the dialogue and the combat is sluggish at times. It COULD have been an amazing game if the devs didn't run out of money or at least tried to salvage it. What we're left with is half of a game, which I didn't even get to see since I encountered a game breaking bug before that. Pretty bummed out about this. Bright side is I didn't pay full price for this mess and instead got it through Humble Bundle.

I'm not a DND player or a lovecraft fan, but man did I love this game. The game does a good job of making you think that every dialog choice and action holds significance in the future. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Many mechanics of the game are unknown or not explained (such as benefits of certain stats, relevance of certain NPCs, crafting, how to use a fucking wrench) mostly due to the lack of activity on the wiki, but the blindness of the game kinda adds to it. Perhaps the game can benefit from a little more hand holding but none the less I didn't get annoyed by the lack of direction.

Its important to note that I didn't play the game alone, which may explain why I enjoyed the game more and got less frustrated than I should have at points. Objectively speaking, this game felt like it had a lot of dead ends, and I can see people not finishing this game due to their frustrations. Perhaps a hint button or an official spoiler-free guide could aid future games like these. It's a shame that this game doesn't seem to have too large of a following, because I really think its spectacular. Visually beautiful, props to the animators and illustrators. Hand drawn art will never be outclassed.

Hopefully there will be a follow up game to Stygian: Reign of the old ones since this game is technically incomplete with its ending. I'm personally forgiving of the incompleteness of the game since the game as a whole has been so unique and well executed. Well done Cultic Games! I'll be waiting for your next game!

This has been an utterly fascinating and mesmerizing experience into what is probably the best implemented-into-a-game Lovecraft I have ever seen. Though unfinished and rough around all its edges, this game manages to captivate with its stylistically designed everything. It breaks a mold that hadn't even been properly formed yet and puts itself lightyears ahead of every other entry in the genre thus far.
However it is also cursed to probably never be a fully realised entity and that's a damn shame. Though I wholeheartedly recommend you get this and play it if you are into the source from whence it came.

++Lovercraft styling(Not my cup of tea)
+Sanity system.
++Characters,Bodyguard+Dog+Nameless Soldier are great ones.
++Crafting

-+Very,very Confusing story and end.
-+Story progress style, sometimes story flow swiftly sometimes you need talk to eweryone and get some info and this is boring or buy some important mission stuff like Lantern.
-+Negative perks, good idea but not well implement to game,Lose 25 Perc Exp or choose higher ctical fail or lose sanity if you not see combat soon..etc.
-+Status nerfs like Mania,schizophrenia..etc.make your like worst cause they cant be healed.

--Sanity system, you just need be addicted to all possible drugs in game to not be crazy(Combine Cocaine+Booze+Tobaco really help to NOT be crazy:) )
----Also sanity drop ewerytime you see something horrible,5,10,20 points down and realize you have Heavy withdraw and need Sanity boost:)
-Price can be lower,20E max.

I thing with more time spend balancing/fixing some game parts and add end it will be great game.

It's times like these I wish Steam had a neutral option.

Stygian is a bit like a fish hook. It has a nice, tasty bit on the end and as you bite it you find the weird, barbed parts and get set and pulled to an unknown world. Then it gets ripped out of your mouth too fast and without warning and takes a chunk of flesh, yet you sill remember the tasty bits from before. Allow me to explain.

Stygian does amazingly at setting up the world, lore, story, visuals, characters and even audio as believable and real for a Lovecraftian story set in the 1920s, even with the fantastical elements and premise of Arkham being pulled from our world and into some unknown realm. The characters feel rather human, or at least they're real enough to believe. The art style sets the tone wonderfully and the sounds back it up. The combat system could use a tweak or two, same with the leveling, but I still enjoyed it... Until the end. Spoilers from here out or so.

TL,DR: Great game, ends too soon and with too much unresolved, worth it if you can buy on sale for $10 or less and can lower your expectations at the very last minute and love Lovecraft stuff.

Edits: Typos and such.

I was hooked right from the start, after the first couple missions I was in totally. It wasn't horrific per se, and I liked seeing the Lovecraftian monsters accurately represented and scaled... But
Nilhon... After the Asylum scene I was spinning and trying to figure out if it was all worth it or if anything was real. Maybe there would be more later, or a calback to earlier that suggests more one way or the other? Maybe it would never be resolved and it's all up to me to figure out. Maybe it was never real? Maybe... And then, I'm on a strange world, in the middle of a war I'm nowhere near qualified to touch and then Oh,OH GOD I HAVE TO KILL MY FRIENDS! And riding on that high the game... ended. On a cliffhanger. With no promise from the devs that it would be finished or anything. That is why I cannot say the game is nothing but good. So much wasted potential.
And I honestly hope that someday this 'review' is totally wrong and I can stand here corrected. But until then.

Excellent game! More point and click adventure than RPG, Stygian nails the lovecraft horror theme and while a short experience, when you're in it you really feel invested. The game is worth a play through for the crazy creative genius of the adventure alone

The caveat I feel is you really need an open mind when it comes to gameplay expectations. The RPG elements are so light, so unimportant they don't really need to be there. Mechanics like the need for food are nothing but a money sink, sanity is arbitrarily gained and lost and a lot of it is completely unavoidable so you just need to chug a constant stream of booze to keep it up and that's that. The battles you can pretty much run from with almost no penalty, the quests you just talk to enough people and try enough random items and they're done. The ending is rushed and there's very little reason to care about anyone or most anything you do as there is just one flavor of everything, horror and death, which does get old eventually.

Overall the RPG side of Stygian needed much more time to cook but the adventure side is exciting and creates a unique experience I think is worth the cost of admission

It's almost certainly unfinished, but the game is fairly good, though I'd strongly recommend buying it on sale.
Blending together several Elements of Lovecraft's writings and the Cthulhu Mythos, the game's lore and story is pretty solid, but mechanics such as hunger and cover could certainly use some improvement in my opinion. Likely you'll find yourself consulting guides and being mildly frustrated at times, but in my opinion it's outweighed by the fun of enduring the challenges the game has to offer. Basically the game lacks polish, but its still a pretty good game, if you like H.P. Lovecraft's works, or just want to try out a horror RPG, give Stygian a try.

This is a qualified; Stygian is a short entry in the Arcanum tradition of brilliant-but-flawed RPGs. The devs essentially wrote an old-school Lovecraftian cosmic horror story and embedded it in a serviceable survival RPG. The writing and aesthetics are the selling point. The lads at Cultic Games clearly know their Mythos, by which I mean not just plotlines, creatures and characters but the intertwined wonder and horror that Lovecraft evoked with his writing. Histories and characters from across Lovecraft's writings appear in separate plot threads eventually woven together, so Lovecraft buffs can have fun counting off the references.
More than that, the gameplay, dialogue and art work together to draw the player in while also fraying the nerves. The madness, hunger and fatigue mechanics are used to enforce a growing sense of desperation; the early game gives you plenty of leeway in how you gear up, rest and plan, but you eventually run into instant death situations and areas where your usual advantages are restricted or taken away. The artwork is deliberately irregular, almost abstract; it can be off-putting at first, but it ultimately looks alternately nightmarish and dream-like. The plot itself is mostly linear, with a couple of mysteries you can investigate in tandem plus some side quests, and serves mainly to provide shock moments borrowed from several of Lovecraft's works. One run-through should take a little more than 10 hours, depending on how much you reload; it's a short story, not a novel.

The mechanics come from old-school RPGs without innovation apart from a negative perk system that forces you to take drawbacks as you go crazy. You have backgrounds, core stats, skill points and feats. You won't level up much compared to a normal RPG, so individual skill and perk picks become more important. Combat is turn-based and reminiscent of Fallout 1/2 and ATOM, offering a mix of tactical choices but nothing exceptional. Fight difficulty and instant-death circumstances can be frustrating at times. Challenges out of combat are handled simply by comparing a total skill rating to a difficulty. The in-game economy is typical for a traditional RPG: you start out poor, then collect and sell vendor trash until you're rolling in cigs and your biggest problem is trying to find the one item you need but the shop doesn't seem to stock. Nothing to break the mold game-wise.

The next Stygian, if there is one, could do with a bit more financing to provide a longer campaign, but mainly needs greater attention to core gameplay mechanics. More combat options and varied, hand-crafted fights, greater variety and balancing of character advancement, more and more detailed different routes for handling quests, that sort of things. That could move the game from brilliant-but-flawed to just brilliant.

TLDR: The ~10 hours of game that are fully developed are excellent - one of my favorite Cthulhu Mythos games and perhaps RPGs overall, in the spirit of games like Fallout and Darkest Dungeon. If you love Cthulhu and RPGs, just do it. Caveat emptor: The game does feel unfinished.

The entire visual aesthetic oozes style, and presents a cohesive and polished vision of a Lovecraftian world, twisted by unfathomable cosmic terrors.

The writing does a great job of conveying a bleak world with lots of weird shit going on. Unfortunately, the game ends suddenly at a point where many story threads are left hanging or unexplored, so the overarching narrative is somewhat unsatisfying.

The game flourishes (in parts that are complete, at least) with a Do It Your Way(tm) philosophy, whereby you can complete quests using a variety of different approaches (really, the game mechanics feel quite similar to Fallout 1 and 2). There's also a neat Belief system mechanic that allows you to choose a belief system for your character (e.g. Humanistic), and then rewards you for roleplaying in alignment with that belief system.

Combat does get a bit tedious (I really wish there were a way to speed up animations), but for the most part it's enjoyable. Combat, while a prominent component of the game, is in no way the primary focus, so don't go into it expecting a deep, tactical turn-based combat system. Themewise, I love how underpowered your character can feel; in the Cthulhu Mythos, Cthulhu always wins... Except for that one time he kinda fell asleep after being bonked on the head, but I digress.

A sense of fighting against an inexorable tide of eldritch horrors extends beyond the combat. Call me Cthulhu if that feeling is not Lovecraftian to an L! I'd liken this aspect of the game to Darkest Dungeon - you're pitting a dwindling set of resources and damaged characters against ever-worsening odds. My initial playthrough evoked this feeling so incredibly well (I literally got all companions and henchmen killed getting to the end, with my character out of consumables and on the verge of going insane), that I kind of fell in love with the game.

One can't help but dream about what this game could have been had there been more money and time allocated to its development. The developers had some really cool ideas which expand on the Cthulhu Mythos in a unique yet thoroughly Lovecraftian way, but they unfortunately aren't fleshed out enough to be completely satisfying.

I understand that people feel let down by a seemingly unfinished, abandoned product. That being said, the developers have expressed interest in continuing the game (from what I follow there are legal/monetary reasons this is not possible at this time)...

Ultimately, for your money you get 10+ hours of a great horror RPG experience that stands out from other Lovecraftian games AND isometric RPGs in a unique blend of both. Maybe it could have been phenomenal if things went differently, but take it for what it is and you'll have a Cthulhu'n good time.

A perfect example to why kickstarter is a real gamble.

They set the bar way too high for themselves and ran out of money. What we got was half a game. Half a game with great writing and design. The reason a lot of people are bummed about this is not because the game is bad, it's because it's arguably the best Lovecraftian game on the market AND UNFINISHED.

Edit: Oh, almost forgot. They are working on their new title, so fuck Stygian I suppose.

If there are multiple endings, I guess I got the dumb one...or the one where they ran out of money and had to release it.

It's a shame, because the writing is really good. The gameplay is dull but the world-craft is excellent.

I want to like this; it appears to have a lot of depth in terms of RPG systems, but for a $30 asking price this game is surprisingly low budget. I'm not just talking about the visuals (which severely take away from the tone of the game), but the interface and responsiveness as well. Items in menus have a delay when trying to pick them up, the 2D top-down movement does not feel good when you must use the arrow keys to keep pace with your character, several of the prompts want you to close out before proceeding but do not let you know this so you wait for them to go away but you have to click the little x now just click anywhere to confirm...
The interactable objects are not noticeable so you have to really point and click click click until you find something that has the same blasé text as several other items or people in the area. Things like this just make it seem like there was no playtesting or review process for this game which is strange for how detailed the RPG elements appear to be. I want to delve deeper into them and experience what this game has to offer but I am held back by the clunkiness of the overall game.

The visuals are the nail in the coffin because the whole point of this game is the Lovecraftian tone which can be executed well but the segmented 2D character models and reused animations remind me of the 2007 flash series Sonny...
If you want an actually good horror point-and-click Tokyo Dark is a good one and for almost half the asking price of Stygian, and a better single player RPG experience can be found pretty much anywhere but most similarly the Warlock of Firetop Mountain also for two thirds the price is a much higher quality experience.

It's a chore to get through this game... It really is... Frequent crashes, bugs, extremely slow loading times... Some quality of life issues with the UI, some issues with the speech options (that end with weird generic responses).

I'd like to recommend the game but it seems like the publishers and devs are more concerned with shipping the game to more people as opposed to... you know... making the game play well (as evidenced by their last update which was a Turkish localization update)...

Too bad for the somewhat engaging story.

My successful playthrough took me 14 hours. I did a first try before which I had to abandon after 8 hours as I got myself into a situation I consider hopeless. I only had one companion left and either missed all other available companions or they were killed in battle. With all the challenging battles still ahead, I restarted and cut my losses. That I did so, is a testimony in itself for this game.

On second try, my character was an explorer with the specialization big game hunter whom I focused on firearms, athletics and survival. The explorer class has a special dog companion from the start which is a nice melee combat support. This character choice was a learning from the first game, where my old occultist fared great in all non-combat situations but even the relatively simple early battles were a great hassle. Accordingly, I breezed through the battles this time but missed almost all occult and scientific content as my party members were all combat-focused. Instead of solving problems with these skills, I either had to pay, use melee skill to crush things or enter fights I could have avoided with other abilities.

Even in this play, there were situations I had to replay. For instance, there's one situation where you knock on the door of a mobster. You have exactly two chances for the right dialogue choice and having the right item with you. On the second try, I got the dialogue choice right but didn't have the requested item. So I told the mobster that I'll be back with this item. Guess what. As he said initially, he directly attacked me when I knocked the third time. From thereon, I was an enemy of the mob. So I went back to an earlier save. You have to be aware of the save system though. There are about 10 save spots. The game autosaves occasionally and you can do so as well. Once these 10 spots are used, the oldest save is overwritten. Did a mistake two hours back? Tough luck.

If you read so far and maybe read some of the mixed reviews as well, you might think why bother. Stygian is a flawed game and features some doubtable design decisions. At the same time, it's a unique RPG with some extraordinary qualities you won't find in big productions. For a game that got a mere 70k € from Kickstarter and is a first effort from a new Turkish studio, they delivered an astonishing game.

They nailed the Cthulhu theme. A feeling of dread and hopelessness is omnipresent. The belief systems and skills of your character incentivize amoral solutions. It's not a simple black-and-white and it's one of the few games where the dark choices aren't so obvious and blunt that no sane person would take them. Your character will descent into madness. You will get addictions and angst conditions. You just can choose which one you will fall for. You will die a dozen different deaths which usually is followed by taking other decisions in the previous situation.

The artstyle is gorgeous. At least for my taste. They went with a dark 2D woodcarving approach. Deterioration is everywhere. The sounds are sparse but more than once I got goose bumps when the sound announced something particularly perturbing. The writing is good and there are scenes which will leave a lasting impression. Some of the situations you just won't find in a major production as they are too deviant. It's not about gory mass slaughter. This, you'll have in major productions. It's events like cultists taking a small child from its mother or people setting themselves on fire. Fitting for a Cthulhu theme but not for everyone.

One of the major criticisms is that the game isn't complete. I was worried about this the most. But it doesn't bother me after finishing Stygian. The official game end is appropriate for a Cthulhu game. In such a world, a clean cut with all open ends tied up and nothing left unclear would be a bad resolution. It's obvious that the developers ran out of money and time. There are things that aren't of any use, story strands that go nowhere. If there's balancing of the game mechanisms, it happens rather coincidentally and the above mentioned possibility for running into hopeless situations are major drawbacks. The game pace is sedate and combat isn't its strongest part.

Nonetheless, I really enjoyed Stygian. It's certainly special interest. Stay away if you are not interested in Cthulhu and don't like the artstyle. But if you are attracted by both, give it a try.

I really wanted to like this game but I found it incredibly boring and obtuse. It's incredibly difficult to tell if you are making progress with no concrete quest objectives or markers. I'm fine exploring to find what I need to do in a game, but numerous design decisions derail this. One, areas you have previously explored can be subject to scripted sequences that you have no way of knowing will occur there. I routinely was at a loss on what to do and just traveled from location to location until an event popped up letting me progress. Exploration is fine. But going through the same handful of areas over and over again because a random but essential even might pop up isn't exploring, it is just wasting my time. Although these events might not be essential. I can't really tell as after the first mission I have yet to progress the main plot. I have explored every area multiple times over, completed numerous side quests, but have yet to see anything regarding the main plot nor any indication of what I am supposed to do to progress.

If the questing wasn't confusing enough, it doesn't help that every aspect of this game us underexplained, assuming it is explained at all. Character creation is awful, with almost no detail as to what various skills and traits do. I had to go through the creation three or four times after making a choice that it turns out was incompatible with a later choice. Your inventory is likewise baffling. Items are sorted into a variety of categories but I can't for the life of me tell you what those categories are. I know one is weapons and another is for outfits. The remaining half dozen? Couldn't tell you what they are. There is no text explaining this, and the icons used on the tabs are meaningless shapes. I get the sword icon is for weapons and the hat icon for clothes. But what does a diamond mean? How about a chalice? I thought that latter might be quest items until numerous quest items were placed in the diamond tab which I thought might be a tab for junk. I have no idea.

There are two types of companions. One type joins your official party while the other just tags along like a mercenary. This made sense with the first mercenary because I had to pay him a fee. Clear enough, I thought. You pay for the companions you don't manage/level and not for the ones you do. But then the very next companion I got joined me with no charge but for a dedicated story reason but was considered a mercenary, while a zombie without any real story motivation was a full fledged companion. I just didn't and don't understand it.

I could go on but suffice to say that after four hours of playing I had enough. I don't mind exploration. I don't mind games that play with concepts of sanity. But I wasn't scared here. I wasn't disturbed. I was frustrated and bored. It really shouldn't be this hard to adapt Lovecraft into game form but here we are yet again with a failure.

Stygian is the only recent game I've seen that does Lovecraft well but it isn't without some issues.
It has great story elements and works primarily as an rpg/adventure. It occasionally freezes up during combat and there are a few instances where if you aren't MEANT to be in combat enemies will keep coming infinitely.
Could have been REALLY good but lacks polish and forums indicate that it just became abandoned by the devs.
For the most part the writing and atmosphere are handled very well as is quest/story integration - it's the rest that needs some shine. Whilst you are never in any doubt that you are taking part in a typically off kilter spooky Lovecraft narrative certain character builds will have a clear overall advantage over all others (i.e. melee/soldier) and this contributes to the game being somewhat imbalanced. On the bright side, your main character isn't severely hamstrung given that point distribution on level up isn't OVERLY affected by your choice of vocation/background. Combat is good enough, isn't the defining property of the game given that experience is mostly linked to story progression, and could have been better.
Despite a few pertinent criticisms Stygian has enough depth to make it an essential purchase for fans of the Cthuluesque and a reasonable bet for anyone who otherwise likes story driven RPGs. I'd rate it 7/10 (perhaps 8 if you're a big Lovecraft fan) but it would easily hit the 85-95 percent ratings had it been just that bit more polished. I'm happy to have it in my library regardless.

The Lovecraftian setting is great but unfortunately the game is painfully slow for my taste. That and the unbalanced turn-based combat system and annoying mechanics make a slow game even slower and extremely dull. Also, the game apparently is unfinished and according to the devs the game's main story arc will never be completed. As a HB premium member I got this game for free so I'm not as bothered as I would've been if I had paid for it.

Recommended for fans of Lovecraft and dark themes looking for a hardcore experience and who don't mind a bit of lacking polish and loose threads. Feels a bit like a budget Arcanum, unfortunately not as well executed.

+Visuals and atmosphere
+Narrative/dialogue
+Options for varying role-play builds
+Decent character creation and skill options
+Some weapon and item variety
+Some unique followers/party members

-Clunky animations
-Dialogue is not voiced
-Story is incomplete
-Combat balance is very poor
-Lots of reloading needed
-Few game options, no difficulty options

As much as I wish this would be a good Lovecratian game - it lacks in so many places and the developers have all but abandoned the UNFINISHED game.

Yes, please be aware, this game is UNFNISHED, its more like a playable Early Access, that juts got abbandoned. The Devs work on (I think) at least three other games that will release this year, but ripped off every buyer of this game.

Why it got so high metascore? Because testers normally don`t play the game through - so there is no mention, that this game HAS NO ENDING. Really, it just stops in the middle. Its like a film who develops so many branches of the story, and then it's over - woithout tying together just a fraction of the storylines it just startet.

So you ask yourself: Do you want to invest time into a game, that gives a story that just stops - and where it is clear, that the Devs WILL NOT CONTINUE the game? The last large update is now 5 months old, and there are still gamebreaking bugs, crashes and, well, the unfinished game. The game fells like you are 1/3 through the game, when it just ends.

The whole build up, half the characters and places are completely wasted.

The combat is clunky and uninspiring, repetetive and somimes just unfair. If you pick the wrong premade character, you miss out on a lot of content (go occult/scientific!). The game does also a terrible job on explaning what to do, how to access important skills and so on. Also, there is a lot of unneccessary backtracking in the game. You will run through the same four screens for quite some time - back and forth - with also inexpainable long loading times between the screens.

If this would be an early access, there would be time and hope that this game really becomes a great game - but this is just a demo, for the full price.

It has great potential, the story sucks you in quickly, BUT this is also the ultimate downfall of the game, as the story is not told completely. Just think about your most loved Lovecraft story - and think how much you would like it, if you could only ever read the first half or 1/3.

And then think if you want to spend money on this?
I will avoid the games of the devs, until I am sure the games are really finished.

I backed this game as a kickstarter project years ago. The scope and style was so interesting and refreshing. I couldnt wait to play. It took so long I forgot about it. Even when It was released I had to chase up my download a year after release. Well its a lovecraft game! Thats the highest praise I can manage I think. Its only just a video game. The graphics are only just more animated than an actual drawing to minimise coding time to make costs lower by the looks. The game its self is mostly walking backwards and forwards between the 3 map areas trying to remember what the last guy wanted. Such a shame. Was it a kickstarter scam? Maybe. The money must have gone somewhere. Maybe someone bought a house. Zero updates or fixes since release. Very disapointed.

Pretty great game, a few bugs here and there, but well worth the trouble. It's very dynamic and has a lot of love and work put into it. Story is the best part, pretty sure it's one of the best Lovecraft-inspired stories I've ever experienced. Really takes the eldritch horror to interesting places while still nailing the feeling of unknowable terror.
The visuals are amazing as well, so much attention to detail and the colour and weirdness. The style is totally unique and a real treat to watch unfold. Game was a bit short, but with the unrelenting horror and struggle it felt a good length and I eagerly await the next chapter of the tale.

I cannot recommend this game if you want to win every fight and save the day like a traditional RPG, failure is an inevitable and important part of the story. You're going to have to flee from fights, suffer permanent drawbacks, do quests that turn out meaningless, and go insane. It's all about survival and investigation, as it should be.

This game is great. Its art style is gorgeous, its story is one of the most interesting that I've ever seen, most characters have something fascinating to say, and its cutscenes are detailed and artistic. BUT:
1) The game is incomplete. Some of its missions were never completed by the developers. I don't get the reason why. I'm pretty sure this is not an early access game.
2) It has some bugs. Sometimes, the game won't recognise you still have rations, it's difficult to click on an item if you aren't in the correct position, you aren't able to click on some actions while resting (even though you should be able to do that), etc.
3) It is totally unforgiving and difficult. One mistake and you've probably destroyed your whole playthrough. You may lose your companions, you may get mad, you may lose all your cigarettes, etc. And, in the end, you won't be able to acquire some so-much-needed rations, ammo, laudanum shots, etc. Even in the smallest of fights, you may end up losing everything that you hold dear.
The game wants your character to get mad. The game wants you to make some cruel choices. The game wants your character to do anything to survive, even if it's immoral. Give it a thought. Besides its oddness, the story it details, has so much to offer. I could have given this game a negative review, but I won't. I would have appreciated it more if it was more polished, balanced, and complete, but I still appreciate the effort.

I recommend this game for the following reasons:
1.Starting character attributes and background define the spectrum of choices you'll have to roleplay in order to survive.
2.Money can't solve everything, you'll need to improve your characters associated attributes/skillset to utilize expensive high end gear.
3.RPG with survival horror twist, must find places to rest/resaerch stuff and carry food/latern/kerosine and other useful stuff with you.

This game had a lot of promise. But persistent bugs, the tedious and unbalanced nature of combat, a gutted spell system, and an incomplete story had me waiting until a future update to do a full playthrough.

However, I've recently found out that the story is being abandoned by the developers and the game will remain incomplete.

Don't bother picking this game up, unless you like stories that cut halfway through without a proper conclusion. You would also only be buying this game for the story, as the gameplay leaves much to be desired and certainly isn't enough to entice you to buy a $30 game.

Given this game's incomplete and buggy nature, I wouldn't recommend buying this unless it was on sale for $5.

I'm a little conflicted on this game. I love the setting they built, but overall it feels like the designers spent a lot of time thinking about how to make a game, but never actually tried playing it to see if it was fun. The game tries to be 'dark' by making the player basically useless in many situations, but doesn't provide gameplay outside of a normal RPG. They game also implements so many penalties and so limited rewards that it feels difficult to make progress. That, combined with some general bugs/quality of life/balance issue, likely due to being an Indie game, makes making any game progress slow and tedious, and while the art/story is good enough to play for a while, it's not compelling enough to make me recommend buying unless it's at a significant discount.

Incredible detail and plenty of rich delicious lovecraftian atmosphere thick with creamy mature themes like prostitution, crime syndicates, black markets, morality etc.

Writing is excellent with everything coming together like a tabletop game supernaturally sparked into uncanny eerie life.

Dialogue and audio are slammed and served before you as a nurturing soup of floating maggots filling the air with the rotting warmth of a dead world, the last foul breathed gasp escaping from a skeletal jaw now hanging lifeless.

STYGIAN: REIGN OF THE OLD ONES, Buy it! Play it! Prepare for what is to come if you are unlucky enough to survive that long.

Old school CRPG vibe; combat is mediocre/acceptable, but the game encourages non-combat alternative builds/solutions. Shines primarily with Lovecraftian references and atmosphere that truly capture Lovecraft's works, ensuring this game will resonate strongly with Lovecraft readers.

The artwork and sound effects are fantastic. The story is okay, quite good if you are exposed to a lot of lovecraftian literature. The system of game was my favorite-you don't simply fight your way out...some battles are necessary, but in many cases there is a way without a fight that has more benefits.

The biggest drawback, on the other had, I would say is the ending...it feels like there should be something more but then there isn't. I am not sure if there is going to be a dlc or a sequel but for now the story of the game is incomplete. There are few glitches with video playing(sound keeps cutting off), but contrast to the reviews I read I only had one occasion the game simply stopped.

I really love this little game. I'm not yet fully through, but the time until now was great. The lovecraftian atmosphere is working very well. The mechanics are nicely integrated with the dread and horror of the setting. The turn based fights are working very well. It's AP based and the different weapons make a difference. There are a lot of options with different perks and items. Every fight was interesting and challenging so far.
With the current patch level I did not encounter any relevant bugs - so it's a full recommendation from my side.

This game is the best Lovecraftian game I've ever seen, this game rapresents what olther tried to do!
While it does suffer from some bugs and the ending is a bit... sudden.
The game as a ton to offer and if you like RPGs or an game that does Lovecraft right, I suggest you to get this game.

This game is like an extremely atmospheric tabletop RPG campaign that is run by the world's worst DM.

I am not gonna spend time on discussing bugs and glitches like many other reviews - the 1.1 version I played was mostly free of them apart from minor annoyances. The game is still really janky but that is not the issue.

The issue is the game's mechanics. This is one of the games that tries so hard to be HARD and HORRIFIC that it ends up being annoying instead. It's full of frustrating mechanics that do nothing but provide the player with unavoidable penalities that ruin the experience. Combat is the most notorious in this regard.
It's turn based and fairly easy, especially since balance is non-existant. Melee weapons are easy to come by, require no ammunition and do great damage. Most enemies are melee focused and can cross the battlefield in a single turn anyway. Ranged weapons rely on ammunition that is scarce and do a lot less damage in most cases. Spells are so ridiculously weak that there is no reason to bother with them for the most part, they provide minor benefits but cost sanity and also health in some cases AND can backfire.
This means your best bet is to do melee combat and easily kill everything the game throws ate you, right? Wrong. There are unavoidable penalties for entering combat. You receive 'angst' which will give your character negative attributes in the long run. It doesn't matter if you win, or lose, if you emerge without a scratch or lose all your friends you get the same amount of angst points. A completely meaningless mechanic. The only way to avoid this is to use stealth (which requires to to make a certain character type) but not all fights can be avoided anyway so you might as well not bother.

On top of angst you also have a sanity meter which gets drained very fast and not just by your own spells. Many enemy types make you lose sanity just by encountering them (and I am not talking about cosmic horrors but basic, early game enemies). To make the game playable this is offset by the fact that witnessing actual horrors in the game makes you lose a comparably low amount of sanity. You end up in a situation where simply seeing a creature you have fought and killed dozens of before results in the same sanity loss as witnessing someone being torn apart in front of your eyes. It's just dumb.

The best part of the game is walking through the city and interacting with it, investigating things but even here there are the signs of the same overly controlling, unimaginative dungeon master. NPCs you can recruit represent extremely min-maxed and hypercompetent character types with overblown stats. Wanted to play a cool occultist? Well too bad, here is the NPC who does the same but is simply better at it than you could ever be.
Chhoices are also not really interesting. One time recruiting an NPC made me lose another follower permanently for no reason. The new NPC randomly dies in a cutscene giving sanity loss as well. So I reloaded my game and did not allow him to join. Guess what? He still ran in at the exact same moment and got killed just so I could still get the sanity loss the game was itching to dish out.
Th character creator is very cool with a lot of amazing choices and skills and feats but half of them won't matter at all. I chose to play as a 'depraved occultist' which in theory would have provided my character with some seductive options. In practice this meant sacrificing a skill point in a major skill for one dialogue option in the entire 8 hours I played that basically meant nothing. It's just shallow and the game would have been better without it.

Resource managment is the same. It's all over the place with contradictory mechanics and no balance in sight. You can hire a bodyguard who will fight and die for you for 20 cigs a day but a night's rest costs 40. Your lamp runs out of oil in real time but running is disabled while it is equipped. Your (hidden) hunger timer is real time as well, punishing you for exploring (which is fine) and for the janky controls of the game (which is not). Health is easy to restore and being wounded carries no real penalties. Sanity on the other hand is very hard to come by and losing even half of it hits your character with unavoidable mental states that wrestle even more control out of the player's hands. Restoration items cause addiction to annoy you even more. The one character immune to panicking due to sanity loss in the game will go berserk on his own. The list goes on, but I will stop here.

I really wanted to like this. There is an amazing game buried inside of this one but it's not worth to look for it. Instead of cosmic horror you get constant annoyance. Wrestling control away from the player every few minutes just so you can tell them 'NOW YOU ARE CRAZY AND TERRIFIED' is not good storytelling and it makes for an even worse RPG.

Avoid it.

I was waiting until the recent patch came out to give this a review, as I was one of the people to get smacked with the game-breaking bug near the end. It took about a month to see the ending, and now that I have...

Well, let's take a step back to start with. This is a game that is not without its problems, but I'm still giving this title a tentative 'yes' in terms of recommendations, for two reasons: one, it's very clear that Cultic put a lot of love and attention into the world, the characters, and the atmosphere, and two, I'd like to see their future works supported.

Stygian is a game that gleefully sucks you in from the word 'go,' and lets you know under no uncertain terms that its creators worked overtime to capture everything about the Lovecraft mythos that people have come to appreciate over the years. Those things people tend not to appreciate, like the hard-coded racism in Lovecraft's original works, gets called out in text and subtext, though I'll warn that it's not done as elegantly as one would hope. Still, it's there, and that's worth noting.

As is the story. Stygian is, at its base, 'Fallout 1, but Lovecraft,' in terms of genre and gameplay. If that sounds even slightly appealing to you, you're going to get sucked in. Isometric, turn-based, it calls back to a lot of CRPGs in terms of structure, difficulty, and character management, which, yes, comes with all the CRPG pitfalls you so often hear about, but my focus here is less on game design and more on the story. As it stands, the gameplay isn't so bad that it acts as a barrier to entry, but it could prove too tedious for people who don't have podcasts to listen to when combat is initiated.

Which is unfortunate. The artistic merits - creature and set design, sound design, etc - are all solid, well executed, and highly atmospheric. Having the combat detract from that, rather than add to it, is a failing in itself, but even so, it's not insurmountable.

Then there's the text. The game relies primarily on text to tell the player what all is going on around them, from overworld events, to special events that can be encountered throughout the story. For the most part, this is all quite imaginative and, on its surface, rather engaging, but it can fall apart rather easily. Like a few other things in this game, the events, the overworld itself, feel underutilized.

Ending or no, the game as a whole feels incomplete.

And this is where the issue of 'elegance' becomes a problem again. Spelling and grammatical errors, of which there are many, are helped not at all by the strict adherence to Lovecraft's writing style, which was overwrought (and, to be honest, rather tedious) to begin with. Adjectives are numerous, descriptions have the feel of someone having thumbed feverishly through a thesaurus, and there is an allergy to commas that defies explanation.

Outside of the text on a technical level, there's the macro level, which has been addressed numerous times: namely, the story as a whole.

The devs have stated that they ran out of time in their development cycle, that they didn't have time to write the ending they wanted to, and, well. Unfortunately for them, it shows. The story *is* incomplete, and the abrupt nature of it is noticeable. While I was willing to go into it with an open mind, owing to the fact that many Lovecraft titles end abruptly, the characters' 'quests' going largely unrealized, the narrative structure is such that it very clearly ends at either the height of its third act, or at the very beginning.

The results of that can be seen in the reviews. It's off-putting, feeling like another game must be purchased to experience the story as a whole, making this one of the rare cases that could have benefited from being released as early access. Cultic would have kept their deadline, brought in the finances they needed to keep going, and the missing third act could have been completed. Instead, Stygian became the experience that it is: one that's cut off at the knees.

I'll be around for Cultic's next entry in the series, and I want to stress that I hope they take what they've learned from this experience, and make even better titles in the future. This developer has a lot of promise, a lot of heart, and Cultic as a whole managed to create a true-to-form experience that is highly memorable with the material they've produced so far. With that in mind, definitely play the game, and support future endeavors-- but be aware that it isn't without some significant flaws.

Its a good game in terms of story, but tons of bugs. Bug where npcs wont show up to keep a quest going. Bug where items npc should have dosen't show up in your inventory. Bug where if grid is full of bodies you cant move in that space or out of it. Bug where if you go off the rails you face neverending spawns of enemies.
The use of LoveCraft was nice but if I cant finish the game or progress the story why play then?

I enjoyed Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones to the fullest. This game is the truest embodiment of H.P. Lovecraft’s source material into another medium. It’s because of this praiseworthy achievement that I feel so conflicted. I wholeheartedly want to recommend this game despite it being unfinished. It’s maybe selfishness that makes me say this, but I don’t think it’s fair for this sanity dripping journey to end halfway through.

Pros:
+ Maddening story
+ A compelling adaptation of Lovecraft’s short stories
+ Stunning visual style
+ Gameplay mechanics mixing detective work and RPG
+ Character progression
+ Replay value

Cons:
– Unfinished story
– The saving system is annoying and buggy
– The multitude of loading screens breaks the pacing
– Balance issues
– Poorly explained stats
– Bugs
