Über das Spiel
STRAFE is a roguelike first-person shooter pushing the limits of computer-generated photorealism and hardcore sci-fi action into unimaginable territory.
With virtually no load times and infinite replayability, just choose your gun and be instantly blown away by:
FACE MELTING SPEED! The blazing fast action will hit you like the blast wave of a 50 megaton thermonuclear warhead, liquefying your skin cells and rupturing your internal organs. Yet still leave you coming back for more.
PERMANENT DAMAGE AND GIBS! ÜBER-GORE® technology means enemies explode with near never-ending fountains of blood, which never fades away. Create wicked works of death art that mark your explored territory from the unventured.
ENDLESS CHANGING LEVELS! Randomly-generated levels are always different and violently unpredictable. Rooms, enemies, power ups, monster closets, and secrets move around every time you die and die and die and die!
As a Scrapper on a impossibly dangerous mission at the edge of the galaxy, you only have one life to navigate all the nightmarish terrains of STRAFE®. When you die, nothing will ever be the same again.

The gibbing in this game is extreme. Body parts can be blown off, smacking into walls leaving splatter marks that slowly works their way down the wall. Enemies missing limbs have blood jets shoot out of their body. Explosions make enemies into blood filled meat bags that spray everywhere.
The enemy roster is a variety bag of silly, creepy, and everything inbetween.
This game borrows a lot from other games in what I consider an act of love and admiration for the games of old that paved the way for future generations.
There are many hidden gameplay elements that reveal themselves over time.
Level design at times is really fantastic.
I wish the game played out a bit different. In this case I wish the team had just gone all in linear and spent time making bigger maps that explored the world in more meaningful ways. Some of the map reveals are just plain awesome and I would have preferred to continue experiencing the game like a classic FPS. That said, the rogue elements are not bad. They just don't feel like the direction I would have liked considering the talent of the mappers involved in this game.
If you have a passion for FPS, in particular if you started at the beginning during the Wolfenstein era, I recommend picking this up.
I beat the boss on standard mode at review time. Took about six tries to finish it. At that point new difficulty is unlocked. I don't think I'll be back to go through on other difficulties, but the game was worth the play through to me.
EDIT: Went through and played on the next difficulty. It was worth it.

On one hand I love the foundation of STRAFE; the movement is great, the shooting is punchy, and playing through the levels, dodging around enemies and going back and forth with them as all the different levels dynamically transition into the next is so much fun. The music is great, and I actually enjoy the aesthetic and attitude of the game. I can totally deal with some more glaring issues if the game itself is just a joy to play.
On the other hand, even with the developers making a bunch of patches and major gameplay updates, I would say at least one in four runs end due to some sort of bug/softlock, whether that be the consistently buggy final boss's homing rocket turrets continuing to fire even after being destroyed, or getting stuck in a train during a level transition, or--the specific incident that broke me--a super rare easter egg room overwriting the normal level generator and softlocking me in the first area of the zone.
For most of these, if STRAFE were any other FPS--say, Dusk or Doom, I would just load a save and hope it didn't happen again. But since STRAFE is a roguelite with permadeath and no quicksaves, I don't have that commodity. That essentially means that no matter what I do or how well I play, there is always a non-zero chance that something completely out of my control will go wrong that either softlocks me or ends my run by no fault of my own, losing 20-40 minutes of progress. As much as I like other aspects of the game, I don't play video games to have my time wasted.
That's not even to mention that for a roguelite this game is super easy to clear. If you're comfortable with retro shooter style games, you'll have no problem with this one as long as you can dodge projectiles and know the weird quirk with reloading that STRAFE has. Within only a few hours of getting the game I was able to complete multiple runs with all three primary weapons on first go. For the five dollars I got STRAFE for, that would be okay, but for the full asking price of fifteen dollars that is criminal. One of the best parts of roguelites for me is learning the game over multiple runs to know what works best and apply that lesson. Here, in just one run I learned immediately!
And no, I have very little interest in the postgame mutators (gameplay modifiers you can select in your ship, like big head mode or one that gives you and every enemy rockets.) Any of the mutators that change the game in any major way seem to bring even greater chances of game-breakage than normal. The Rocket Arena mutator is a great example of this--the map didn't work, the item menu didn't work, and I almost had yet another softlock end a run because my weapon swap bugged while doing one of the secret minigames and I was stuck in a loadzone until I magically unstuck myself, because weapon swap is super broken in Rocket Arena.
I want to love STRAFE so bad. All the pieces are there and the developers are clearly super passionate about that 90s attitude and style. But those pieces are glued together with vomit mixed in honey and are also halfway wedged in a wall. Maybe more of that 200k Kickstarter money should've went to the final game than a five-minute short film?
UPDATE: So I relented to what I liked about this game and played a little more. The mutators get increasingly expensive and annoying to play the game with, and the secrets are one-time gags that are neat but just show how much polish didn't go to the main game. Review, unfortunately, stays negative.

It would be an alright roguelike if the RNG that screws you over wasn't the game code

The only problem is the gameplay or certain aspects of it that really stop me from getting immersed and enjoy the gameplay.
The game being a rogue-like means death resets your progress (with some small meta progress if you're lucky), so the goal becomes not to die. This would be fine but the way the game handles encounters, healing and hazards mean you have to choose a more careful and methodical playstyle than the tone of the game implies.
Healing comes so rarely you can't afford to take any damage and the procedural generation makes it hard to plan encounters as you can't know the size of the room or amount of enemies you'll have to dispatch before you can take a break.
There's no reward for charging in guns blazing instead of slow taking out a few enemies at distance and kiting the others while you pick them off.

The bad: Everything should have clicked for this with me. Maybe the rougelite aspect through me off. The movement was fine, maybe Dusk spoiled me. At times I felt like I was drunk or debuffed.
Not for me

THIS GAME IS FREAKING AWESOME. The guns, movement, enemies - everything works together to bring you the most fun experience that you can get from a single player FPS. Designs are cool and clean. Easter eggs are just spectacular!
And it's not THAT hard. Every person who left the negative review is a little cry-baby.
Git gud, casul.

However, in its attempt to get to an FPS roguelite, sadly it seems the worst of the genre has been taken and the best somewhat forgotten.
The most obvious example of this is the level generation. It's extremely easy to get lost and to just wander around for 5 or 10 minutes doing nothing but backtracking, getting back to the start, going through the level again, rinse and repeat. From what I can work out, when you clear an area, a door opens. However, finding the door that opened is really quite difficult, they blend into the environment like scenery and with so many interconnecting mazes before you manage to open the door, knowing which one is the latest to open is just a matter of trial and error.
Getting lost is common in RPG roguelites, but the slow pace makes it less of an issue. In Strafe, any moment your not shooting or being shot just doesn't fit.
Aside from that, the level's actually feel quite samey, with enemies always appearing in some form in reappearing segments, and just an overall lack of feeling that the level is truly unique. You also lack much progression aside from some light upgrades, and early game (I assume what I've played of it is just early game) gun variety is alright, but from a game just about guns, feels a bit lacking.
tl:dr; A not great roguelite built on top of an otherwise fantastic feeling fps.

It is not that.
It is a rougelike where 90% of your gametime will be spent holding S with a coat of retro-FPS paint.
If you want a rougelike, buy this.
If you want a retro FPS, do not buy this.

I hadn't played it in forever and then the Gold Edition update came out, so I was like oh, let's see what they did, the last update was dope, so this one should be doper.
Well, idk what they did, but the levels just feel so empty now and I feel like they messed with how they are put together because they are not fun to navigate. It is just not fun for me to play anymore. I kind of wish there was a way to play the Millennium Edition again.

Overall gameplay is fun, the guns feel fantastic, the movement is nice but the level design is a horror show of what not to do and completely ruins the game.
If i manage to forget about the fact i softlocked the game 4 times in a row in different ways then i may return to it, if not it is going to sit in my library unplayed for the rest of time.

You basically have one of three primary weapons that you will be married to for the entire run. Pick up a fun new gun and enjoy 10 whole shots with it. This means that the gameplay can actually get really tedious... really fast. Of the shotgun, assault rifle, and long range rifle, only the shotgun seems to be worth a damn. Machine gun is alright, but the spray means you'll never hit anything. the long rang gun has horrible accuracy, and I've never been able to fix that issue while playing.
Overall, I also think the base difficulty kinda screws the player over a little too much. I didn't play on easy, because the game informed me I wouldn't be getting any progress or anything by choosing it. So... why offer it? Man, this game might be great, but it just handles like crap. playing it just puts me in a bad mood and I won't be getting my money's worth out of this purchase.

Pros:
- Fun game with high replay value thanks to mutators that change how the game behaves
- Satisfying weapons and tons of gibs and blood squirts
- interesting minigames to break up monotony somewhat
- Skill based movement (bunny hopping)
- Fun final boss fight
Cons:
- Can be tough for people unexperienced with quake like movement and weapons
- Level design is procedurally generated and is easy to get lost, minimap is borderline useless
- Perhaps a bit short, ending felt a bit rushed
- Singleplayer only, no pvp
Overall, I think this game is excellent and I would recommend this game to anyone with an interest in roguelikes and fast paced skill based movement games, especially if it's on sale.

Strafe
The FPS Roguelike that looks like Quake
How is it? It's pretty good but not perfect. I like Strafe, but it does some wrong to me personally and objectively. I'll start with what I notably enjoyed.
What I Liked
The Graphics, Aesthetic, and Atmosphere. It pulls off the old school vibe pretty well. I like the Weapons, mostly the Shotgun and Machine Gun. Shooting feels good enough, same with the Gameplay. The Bunny Hopping being executed amazingly helps with the old school feel. There's lots of little Easter Eggs and Secrets. They also kept updating the game years after release up to the Gold Edition. There's lots to appreciate here.
But What I Don't Like
I just personally feel like Strafe is partially a missed opportunity. Like it's fun when you first beat it, which took me about 4 hours. After that I Achievement Hunted for a bit and played all the other modes just once and that's it, which was overall 7 hours for me. Maybe my expectations were off, but I kinda expected more. Like there was very little motivation to keep playing, which sucks cause I like this game. I wish there were more Achievements or better in game progress to motivate me to keep playing. There can be a lot of Replayability for some people, but not me. Makes me wish this game had better, hand-made levels and a Campaign. Maybe even if this game was a RogueLite instead of RogueLike for longterm upgrades. The pros still outweigh the cons.
Overall
Strafe is more a Roguelike FPS rather than a Old School Shooter. It looks like Quake but definitely doesn't play like it, and we shouldn't expect it to. I appreciate Strafe for what it is, but it didn't hold my attention for very long. I personally really like FPS Roguelites and had to try this game. It was still pretty fun. Get this on sale. I'd mostly recommend it for Roguelike fans and Old School Shooter fans who are curious.

To keep it short, it feels kinda lacking in a lot of detail areas. The gameplay loop is decent, but a lot of small things are lacking that shouldn't be, and it makes it mundane quite quickly. It seems to be a lot of style over function, a lot of possibilities are there, but in the end it seems to be purposefully made too simple. This flows throughout the game, a lot of features, enemies, sounds, graphics, mechanics and more just feel barely done. Where they would have needed much more love and it would have felt like a good product. Just saying, if you are an arena shooter or twitch-shooter fan, and expect this to be just that but as a rougelike, you will most likely be disappointed. It only looks that way on the surface, and resembles more a arcade rougelike version of Doom. Not talking about all that I think the game lacks, but one of the bigger issues I have to mention: it crashes very often as well. If you really want to play it, buy it on a cheap sale.

Old school graphics, old school shooter. The game oozes pixel art, The sound as well, very midi style and very catchy.
The gameplay itself is not easy at first. But it gets easier each time you complete the game, a roguelike in some ways.
There are mutators to make gameplay more dynamic, and each map also a seed for unique layout. What's nice is the maps can be very vertical with some awesome sections.
There are only 9 maps in total, so the game is not very long at all with the idea being to replay it. It has massive replayability potential.
Weapon range from generic shooters to some that take a while to figure out and can be really devastating if you know how to use it. You can also use items in the world to attack.
And the 3 main guns, of which you can only use one per game round, can be upgraded into some really excellent ways.
There are also loads of enemies, with some only spawning in certain game rounds.
Give the game a try, you'll probably get frustrated and stop playing. But go back and give it another go. It can be very rewarding.
I'm looking forwards to Titan Pixel's next project!

It's fun, I recommend it. It's a fast-paced action shooter.
It's not perfect. There are occasional glitches but I've not encountered many. There are some very puzzling design choices. The mini-map is completely useless. The weapons are much too limited for the 90's aesthetic that they are going for. They require reloading and all pickup weapons get 1 clip, then empty forever unless you find another of the same one, which is rare. Only the starter primary weapon gets ammo pickups.
The game was originally very difficult for newbies. Thankfully, the newest version of the game makes it much more approachable. They made it easier to beat the game for the first time (only 8 levels to beat, instead of 12), which is nice. It takes 1-2 hours to get into the game. Most of the mechanics are not explained, but there are guides in Steam you can reference if you just want to get started. If you feel overwhelmed, just give yourself a bunch of mulligan runs where you just play around and die fast. This is a roguelike so you have to keep with it and die a bunch of times before you get the hang of it.
Mutators are the best part of the new editions. It's a shame they all have to be unlocked one by one. However, all you have to do is play to get unlock coins. You don't even have to play well. I like playing with big head mode because easy headshots give me a nice little edge.
There are also lots of secrets and tons of 90's vidya references so if you are into exploring for secrets and minigames there's plenty of that.
So, yeah, I would have done a few things differently, but overall this is a really fun game that I found exciting and drew me in. It's worth the price now.
One last bit of advice, try to get used to going fast. That's where this game really comes into its own. If you play it timid, like hide and peek potshots through doors, then you won't have as much fun. Jump around and strafe about like you used to in Quake.

- Very enjoyable and fast pace roguelike
- Love the art style
- There is some doom ref in the game <3
- Movement is solid for fast paced FPS rogue like
- The gunplay feels pretty good
- The gore is pretty ok at best
- The theme somehow feels like DOOM mixed with Dead Space which is good (There is even Similar enemy model like Dead Space creature in the game)
Cons:
- The game can be completed in less than 2 hours
- You literally only need one weapon and that is your main weapon (other weapon 100% are useless)
- The game doesn't feel really rewarding you to play again especially for rogue like game
- it's annoying in the few first level enemies and the level design at first level really confusing because all the material is the same...
- Some few bugs in the game
* Lost my save progress (Even after enter cyro pod to save) and need to restart from zero again :/
* Some missing image or texture effect (White Square popping up)

The story is none existent and the bits that can be discerned as part of a story are vague and cliché. While being a rogue like and having a lot of replay value there's not much to do, and after a few hours of gameplay one might get bored of the same levels. There's not much reward in using other weapons that aren't your main one and many supposedly upgrades end up ruining your gun and playstyle.
Still it is a fast paced FPS that copies many things that make other FPS like DOOM and Quake really good, it's fun no matter the problems. Wouldn't recommend if it is your first fast paced FPS experience, there's much better out there.

...EXCEPT FOR ONE THING. There is a LONG standing bug with this game where the frame rate will rapidly drop to 1fps. Given this is a rogue-like and you play until you hit the end in one long run, this is inexcusable. I've had more than one go at the end-game RUINED by this bug, and the developer refuses to fix it. And there's no way around it. You'll be having a great run and then boom, the whole game will be ruined when the frame rate drops to 1FPS, forcing you to restart the whole game (a pity you can't re-start from the last save, but that is one of the charms of this game).
So despite my love for this game, I'm giving it a thumbs down. Save your money until they FIX THIS BUG.
