+massacre zombies is fun
+has some story going on
+improving your base is satisfying
-tedious to carry around the ressources
-can be stressful because you get flooded with rescue missions (i can't continue the story missions)
-it has a lot of waiting timers to lengthen gametime (gathering ressources, base improvement)
-if you exit the game the survivors will still use up your ressources

PROs: Too many to list. Very strategic, and yet very in-the-moment. Every new building explored is a new experience, even if it is repeated many times. Every battle is engaging. There are so many weapons, and for once bigger is not always better because of the noise that attracts the zeds. Or a stupid decision gets your heart going hard. I lost a character once because I heard a big zombie but couldn't find it, so I opened the door and one of the fat bastards happily came in and basically just rolled over me. Since then, when in doubt, don't open the door.
CONs:
- Glitchy as heck. Too many times I'm dropkicking a zed or knifing their face and suddenly they are biting me.
- Terrible ally AI. I lost Maya because Marcus decided he was tired and just left me, no warning, not even after a fight. A horde and a feral started chasing me so I ran after Marcus. Ended up dying 3 feet from him, character screaming, while he continued walk/jogging. So many times I've had to jump through windows because my following AIs were jamming the door inadvertently. On one mission on the farm, I couldn't finish it because the enemies were all underneath the porch, still breaking windows and that character had a shotgun and the only ammo not stashed there was shotgun ammo, despite one of the brothers having a shotgun.
- Unbalanced time; it feels like day and night are equal. In sunny places on earth, the days are longer.
- Unbalanced energy; I will work a character from dawn till dusk and then wait almost two days before they are ready to go.
- Unbalanced help; Marcus, being my main, has basically built everything and delivered everything and saved everyone a dozen times and yet.. when I want a character to help me on a supply drop, there is nobody anywhere, or nobody willing, or because I use snacks with him a lot, there's little influence for me to use. I'll have thirteen survivors and only find at most five at any given time. Nobody ever comes to help me when I am running for my life either.
- Overbearing tasks; In 17 hours, one game, I don't think I've even figured out the plot yet. It takes me in-game days to get one mission in progress because of the sheer frequency of allies in help or zed hunts or whatever. I once rescued Karen from opposite sides of the map, with nothing but a small zed hunt in between. And when I have finished the in-game mission, I find out that a bunch of allies died doing their hunts and whatnots without me,
- Strange occurrences; Ed disappeared when I moved homes. No death, nothing, just poof.
- Overbearing spawning frequencies; There were justified deaths, stupid decisions, and I accepted those, learned and moved forward in the world of SOD, but between Maya and Sam, I drew the line over stupidity. I was heading to rescue some idiot but forgot that I came within the very exaggerated boundaries of the supply drop, which initiated it and forced me (alone because nobody was willing or able to help at home) to attempt a supply drop solo. So I drove around in a station wagon killing two hordes and two ferals, and then clearing every nearby group of zombies. The moment Sam stepped out of the car a feral jumped out of an already cleared space while another horde spawned 6 seconds behind the feral. I managed to get back in the car, but the zeds ripped the doors off and I got torn apart. All I see in this game now is spending my time dealing with a never-ending stream of zed hunts, helping allies and random crap, just to watch my characters die off because nobody comes to their aid. I really find this game could have been amazing with a bit of spit and polish, but if I actually want to enjoy this game start to finish, it might well take 50+ hours but I don't have the tolerance for this anymore.

State of Decay 2 feels full of filler, and makes you loot so many random and unnecessary stuff- this does not.
I will note, you may need to look into some mods to fix the shadows that can be very glitchy.

This is a good game. It's not great, but it is enjoyable.
Imagine it as a lite-survival zombie game with building elements. You build your own settlement (anywhere you want!) and expand it as you see fit.
Driving feels good, and cars are really OP for dealing with hordes.
I also love the NPC dynamic in this game. Every NPC has some quirk to them, which can cause a little trouble down the line if certain conditions are met.
In general, the gameplay loop of looting and side quests is pretty satisfying, although sometimes tedious.
The graphics are sub-par. It may add to the simplicity of the game, but it's kind of hard on the eyes at times.
The story is meh, but certain characters are very likeable.
Combat is actually pretty satisfiying, although it can be frustrating to see a zombie sneak up on you, only for you to be bitten from the back because you can't turn fast enough.
All in all, 6/10

If you can get past this admittedly distasteful choice, you'll find that State of Decay is an excellent game.
- GTA-like gameplay
- Per-character RPG-like progression with weapon and combat specializations
- Base management with population control, food/water/construction supply needs, and a minor reputation system with
neighboring survivor settlements.
- Endless mode with scaling difficulty
- Two campaigns on different maps

The major focus I have on this game is the stamina meter, because it's just important. SoD2 allowed people to sprint forever (even if their stamina ran out) and shake off zombies very easily, but SoD1 forces you to stick with your stamina meter. If your stamina runs out, you will be vulnerable, because you run slower, do actions slower and zombies could easily overtake you, thus items that replenish your stamina would really come in handy.
My biggest con this game offers is babysitting. Just like SoD2, you have to do repetitive missions during your run. HOWEVER, they don't appear as often as in SoD2 and you can simply just ignore them, decreasing your morale (happiness) on your community which can be easily increased again. It's not a huge issue, but it will annoy some players on their playthrough.

And the night time takes way too long to pass. You can't really go out at night for looting, because of the higher zombie count so you are stuck at base waiting for the sun to come up which takes at least 30 minutes game time.
The most effective weapon in the game (weapon of choice) are cars. Instead of constantly having broken weapons or running out of ammo I find myself constantly driving over the zombies at the houses I want to loot. I am pretty sure that the devs didn't intended it to be played like that, but it's the best way to progress through the game without annoyances.
Building up a base is fun and getting a bigger crew on the base is fun, looting locations in itself is fun, but the execution of it all is just not very good.
If you want to smash zombies with a nice story around it you are better of playing Dead Island that did basically everything right in the game and it looks a whole lot better as well.

Although the game is already a bit old, I liked it for its realism, namely: you can carry a rather meager supply of things in your backpack (firearms, edged weapons, some cartridges for them, very little food, etc.), and not like in some games, where you carry 10 types of weapons with you in your backpack, 100 cartridges for them and a whole store of food and medicine, the next is the fact that any noise in the game attracts zombies, be it gunfire, driving a car, breaking glass,
knocking down doors, etc., which makes the player not just shoot right and left, which is important in almost all shooters, on the contrary, to think, it is advisable to spend the already meager supply of food, medicines and ammunition.
Overall, the game is very cool.
I recommend to walkthrough !!!

Just downloaded the game again, for old times sake. And as SOON as I picked a house in the Breakdown scenario, there were literally 10 hordes in the neighborhood... what? My survivor has 5 bullets and a lawn mower blade.. and I'm supposed to dispatch 10 hordes?
So I ran over a few of the hordes, only to get a notification that there were even more hordes headed towards my base.
That isn't fun. I have only been able to loot one building.
I know for a fact my base will not survive, so there is no point in even sinking hours into attempting that. I've played this game long enough to know how things work, and that particular level of challenge just won't.
Hopefully, I can find a mod or something to fix whatever this mess is.

Cons: It does have a lot of bugs and glitches esp with the bots.
Zombies will glitch through doors instead of breaking it.
Sometimes your allies will glitch into rocks, walls, or won't move at all.
It does get repetitive with copied buildings and side quest.

This is an: Open world, survival, roguelike, zombie game with some lite base building sprinkled on top.
Do not get turned off by the sim aspect of the game which is base building and managing the people in your home base. I can tell you it is easy to handle. I enjoyed my time with the game. But in the end it started to drag a little. With the repetitive missions and the lack of buildings and upgrades you could build in your home base.
But I still recommend it. Hope you try it out!

It hasn't aged well, plays like a bad port and some bugs from day 1 still haven't been fixed. To make matters worse, the devs released a Year 1 edition and instead of making it a free update for original owners, the product had to be bought separately. This enraged a lot of players considering how YOSE wasn't even that big of a difference with many even calling it a downgrade. Get State of Decay 2 instead.

Low draw distance results in hideous pop-ins in a game already featuring aged visuals. Rickety wooden fences that are unbreakable and will wreck your vehicle if rammed into. Shallow simulations that result in a repetitive mission structure, with no real player initiative outside of scavenging. An AI that has trouble navigating simple environments, and sometimes caught running to old waypoints the game forgot to remove from their pathing, even if across the entire map. A pesky spawn system that replaces all the walking dead mere minutes after disposal. Plain base management with the limited complexity of a mobile game. An it's all impossible to fail, the worst condition I achieved by deliberately ruining my base was a minor penalty to my maximum health.
Survivor statistics are poorly balanced. Some specializations have none or minimal impact, particularly for ranged weapons. Wits on the other hand is overpowered for the sole reason that it saves you time, so you don't waste your life watching a search bar and it eventually removes the chance for you to make a loud mistake and attract zombies, leaving you to scavenge in peace and do it fast without any hindrances, though it is the most time consuming skill to train.
Yet there's an inkling of immersion, a few fleeting moments of when it delivers exactly what it promises, memorable times that you wish the game had more of. If there were hostile people that competed with you for the limited supplies of the valley, and failure in maintaining your survivors morale and health had actual consequences, the game would be a lot better.

This game reminds me heavily to that of CAPCOM'S Dead Rising, but now it's in the wilds and it's an open world scale game, which is the best in my opinion. You'll played as a survivor taking a holiday/fishing trip, then suddenly, apocalypse incoming. Reminds me of THE WALKING DEAD so much.
You have guns and melee weapons to fight against zombies wandering around local town. You can also drove car and ran them over. One thing I should mention, the game heavily relies on survival and realism, so, if you ever experience a fatigued, you will get exhausted much faster from running, climbing, jumping and swinging your weapons, you'll get easily bloody tired. Also, you even have to search town from store, houses, dinner and the streets for fuel, ammo, food, medicine to help build up a large community.
Cons however, largely for someone who has not played this type of game, would often find themselves confused with objectives and missions are really-really putting you into large sorts of stealth required bullsh!t that you really didn't need to get quiet. For f@#K sake, worst scenario ever!
In AMD A12 9720p RADEON R7 / 12 COMPUTE CORES 4C+8G w/12 GB RAM, the game is NOT ENTIRELY playable. Well, the game runs between 18-27fps, but I kind of like it. Maybe one day, if I have a better gaming laptop/PC I would have. If you're wondering why I couldn't buy the original, because Undead Labs and Xbox Studios removed the original one from sale, so....f@#k 'em for their greedy marketing strategy and f@#k my PC because I'm broke as hell.
Regardless, STATE OF DECAY is one of the most enjoyable OPEN WORLD ZOMBIE GAME that I have enjoyed in the past and even now. It comes at a cheap price until JANUARY 6 so....GO GET IT!

This re-release of the original is better than the original in every way.
The graphics were remastered, more weapons and objects added, new vehicles and characters.
If you've never played State of Decay, it's a 3rd person zombie survival shooting/fighting game that has interesting aspects of group management with a full story as well as modes to keep the game fresh.
The story itself is fairly good. Let's face it, it's a zombie apocalypse story, so set your expectations correctly. But really it's not too bad. The interesting part though is how the story, once finished transitions into a new mini-story type game play that can be repeated over and over, and gets increasingly more difficult each time.
The goal is unlocking more and more 'hero' type characters from a list as you improve your settlements with each iteration of the mini-story. It might sound obscure, but it really is interesting and fun.
Here are some highlights of the game play:
You can play any survivor in your group. This is really great. You can switch at will if someone is wounded or tired. Each of the survivors is different, and they all have backstories, personal dialog and a different look.
You can specialize every survivor however you want. Hammer wielding brawler, sure. Sniper, why not? Shot-gunner, or even a combination.
You can equip every survivor however you want. Guns, knives, hand grenades, there's a fairly wide selection of different weapons to keep it interesting.
You can select a base of operations for your group as well as move to a new location any time you want.
The basic game play itself has you controlling your survivors and keeping the group together. Missions are endless and the game really is more or less a sandbox that will continue as long as you want it to.
Missions include finding materials to reinforce your base. Finding food to stay alive or cook a giant meal to boost morale. Finding new weapons, keep ammunition in stock, or a part you need to upgrade your medical tent.
If zombie survival is your thing, and you haven't discovered this yet, grab it up. It really still holds it's own against current games.
For players who have played Sate of Decay 2, but not this game:
This game is light-years better than State of Decay 2. I know that sounds odd, but it just is. I have all 3 of the games in the series: The original, Year One, and State of Decay 2. They really left the best aspects of the game out of State of Decay 2. I don't know the decisions behind why, but playing both games side by side, you'd never know this was the original in the series.

Terrible analogy aside, this is actually quite an engrossing zombie survival game. There is a story to follow in the game but most of the fun found in State of Decay comes from it's more emergent gameplay systems that create some pretty intense situations where a simple mistake on a scavenging trip can turn into a hectic escape from hordes of zombies that can kill quickly if you aren't careful.
Some of the controls and mechanics are a bit clunky but don't affect the experience too drastically.

*full of dead people who are wandering around, besides they are not friendly (having experienced one of them bit my neck)
*surprisingly, every vehicle left abandoned on map has full gasoline in fuel cap and key on dashboard so you can use any vehicle you see.
* outside of safe house you are not safe
* the previous statement doesn't imply inside of safehouse you're safe, sometimes a crowd of zombies will attack your base
* Consequently you are not safe at all
*it's only singleplayer don't plan on playing it by your girlfriend (but it would have been a good idea having multiplayer in a case your gf is scared you give her a supportive hug and affection)
*I'm suffering sleep deprivation, have been awake last night I gotta take a nap, bye

Thrown into a very vanilla zombie apocalypse, the game doesn't offer much new here.
What is incredible is the interaction with other survivors, some which you can take into your community.
You are able to swap between characters, and PHYSICALITY is a massive past of State of Decay.
If you run, you get tired. If you fight zombies, you get tired. If you carry too much, you get really tired. If you stay out on runs too long, you get tired.
Managing this limited and precious resource of stamina is a huge part of the game. Frequently the game throws high risk and high reward situations at you.
And this game has perma-death.

This game is fun, but it is too punishing and not rewarding enough. It also has weirdly unrealistic mechanics although it wanted to be realistic.
What the game is fun about? First off, this game has a good open world. These days, many game makers build open worlds unnecessarily as they want to lengthen playtime to make players feel worthy, but have no idea what to present in the open world. These redundant open worlds are just the results of copy and paste what the dev thinks are good over and over again (yes I am talking about Ubisoft). Though they look different, they fundamentally feel the same and I don’t have a desire to explore, which is my foremost standard to judge an open world. I always think The Elder Scroll is a great open-world series because those places in the world not just exist, but all have stories behind, and State of Decay shares this trait. Though it does have some copy and paste contents like those farming missions; however, it successfully built some interesting and diversified spots with stories behind. They inspired me to explore not just to gather resources but to find out the truth behind the apocalypse and the human stories during this zombie nightmare.
Second is the story. The story begins as a personal story in the angle of Marcus, a survivor who fortunately avoid zombie infection. But later, narrative shifts into a broader perspective, which is all the survivors as this game allows you to play different characters. It is an interesting change as you start to observe this apocalypse beyond individuals but from the perspective of the whole mankind. The story itself is good as well. It follows the question of what makes the apocalypse happen as a mysterious story. On the way to unravelling the truth, you get a glimpse of how different people react to the apocalypse and their characteristics and reactions are indeed convincing and realistic. The only complaint I have is the story is relatively short and could have dug deeper.
Gameplay-wise, it is flawed. As I said, it is too punishing. There are too many zombies to handle and they keep spawning no matter how many I kill, but as a survival or a farm game, my characters have very limited stamina, health and inventory space to store bullets or other items. If a horde of them gets alerted, which is easy, and you don’t have a vehicle, you are pretty much dead. Worse still, once killed, characters are gone forever. It is unrewarding as well. Inventory space, even plus your vehicle space, is too limited for a survival game. You barely make it alive, but you hardly make one trip worthy as you might give up some items. Plus, even you max out all facilities, it hardly makes any differences to your scavenge or fight.
It has some problematic mechanics. How come this valley area, not a megacity, have so many populations to turn into zombies? How come zombies can keep spawning even I just wipe out every one of them a second ago? How come only the character you control is the one who does thing? How come other survivors are a bunch of liability who consume resources and don’t do anything like collecting resources or cleaning zombies themselves while you are gone? How come they all need you to clean their asses and babysit their moods? How come they don't carry items for you? How come they don’t fkin bar a window themselves? How come the door cannot be barred? How come the zombies’ obsession with windows even the door is open and next to them? How come a rucksack and a bullet take the same vehicle space? They made me annoyed.
Lastly, it is very buggy and glitchy with poor PC port. I think games like this and Assassin’s Creed Unity which also have many interactable objects are buggy and glitchy in the same way. Textures or models won't load, zombies getting stuck, disappearing and reappearing, characters or zombies passing through walls and doors, missions cannot proceed unless reenter the area etc., bugs and glitches are just excessive. Moreover, textures are very rough as a result of poor PC port, along with unstable frame rates, occasionally unresponsive control and bad shooting.
If you like the good I talk about and can stand the ridiculousness, you can consider this game, just don’t set your expectation too high.

Old graphics but very fun. No Microsoft live account needed to play.
Day-night cycle and missions who expire after some time.
Amazing fun at the start, you can choose when you want to do the end missions.
Otherwise this is an (if you so desire) infinite zombie apocalypse world.
This game actually gave me the sense of desperation you always see in zombie apocalypse movies because of the endless zombies and endless tasks just to survive. It really is a pain to go through that every day of every week of every year and it never stops and you can die even if you're strong but in a bad situation. So that's cool!
You can level up all the survivors of your community and lose them too.
All characters have basic stats to level and personnal ones you can choose later on to make individual zombie killing machines with melee and firing weapons of your choosing.
It can really suck to lose your nr one character because the game saves right after you die.
You wanna save that character when you see it's close to death and you're panicking? Reset button on your pc, fast before it dies. Or you'll have to restart the game from scratch if you want to have that character.
Which I actually did one time. Huge lesson learned not to get cocky. (Han Solo was right)
You get three 'chapters' you can play. The first is the original with the game story which I told about.
The second has the same map (the outdoors) but is played from another person's viewpoint in the story.
I kinda had enough of that map so I skipped that one.
The third is played from the view of the military and has a cool new map in the city.
Game mechanics are a bit different but very interesting and the game is thrown in a new and exciting story.
I didn't play this very long but it's so good that I might revisit this game to play the third chapter.
If you want to experience a very good open world, your choices matter, walking dead game which doesn't need Microsoft live access, this is the one.
I hope SoD3 won't have MS Live access needed because I think it's gonna be awesome.
8.5/10 Try it if you want to experience what The Walking Dead really is about.

On top of that zombies will literally spawn out of thin-air, fall through the ground and your soldiers can't run more than 10/20 feet without losing their breath...
Generally it's a good game, but my god it needs tearing apart and rebuilding from the ground up.

Like how it is the most realistic survival game I have ever experienced. Everything about this game in my opinion is perfect and does nothing but make me excited for what's to come in the next game. It's all super intense and will show you several times how you perform under stressful situations. It's nothing but epic and filled with different stories and experiences waiting to be seen.
Every survivor tries there best to conquer Trumball Country with skills they have from there past life habits and hobbies and new things they must learn along the way for there very own survival. Nothing is more satisfying than shredding through a zombie hoard with the car of your choices' door.
One of the key factors that makes this game so realistic is once your character dies he is dead forever so you need to keep building your settlement. Youd be surprised how different you play with the looming thought of death over your favorite characters. It's all one huge epic intense ride that I will never get enough of. I used to hate zombies with a passion and now I crave them.

The cars drive like they are constantly slipping on butter, and have no acceleration. It's either full speed or nothing. Half the time you don't even know what you are supposed to be doing other than just going from Point A to Point B and collecting random supplies (hardly ever anything fun or useful). If your base is under attack, Lily might say something completely ambiguous like 'I know you're busy, but we haven't got much time.' --- Time for what??? Then when you come back to your base and zombies are everywhere, you're like... oh. Would it have been so hard to say 'Help! There are zombies in the base!'
New players will die easily in the second major area, and lose the plot-driven characters almost immediately. Leaving you to play anonymous characters with absolutely no backstory, while also inexplicably still having the same voice actor as the plot-driven characters. You will then spend time tediously going from house to house, grabbing supplies you don't really find interesting. Just run of the mill stuff like health and stamina and occasionally a half-decent weapon. Your goal is to find building supplies for your base, which is the only meaningful part of the game.
There's no real story. Every character is literally a copy-paste caricature of every other b-movie zombie film or game you've seen or played.
Overall I wouldn't pay more than 1$ for this experience.

VERDICT:
What do you guys see in this game!? It's a bunch of the same missions over and over with a few story lines to follow which are pretty hard to follow because it doesn't tell you if it's a side mission or a main mission. You kinda get the idea of whats side and whats main after a while but that's beside the point, a little more detail couldn't have hurt. The bugs in this game are questionable, getting stuck on logs or inside a building are the most annoying but I also did a few missions where the NPC would just keep running until they either died or the mission failed and at that point I've lost interest in the story and the game all together.
It's not a terrible game but does it deserve the praise it's getting? It's an average game at best.
Total Score = 53/100.

GAMEPLAY:
It places emphasis on how the player's leaderships skills fare against an onslaught of problems, such as diminishing survival resources, group trust and morale, zombie extermination, base defenses, and people's lives. The game combines elements of shooters, stealth, role-playing and strategy games and the game challenges players to survive by exploring, scavenging, and fighting the undead.

Mission log is a fucking mess, almost all the tasks are timed, but there is no indicator, you have to search the map and guess.
Looting is the definition of insanity, everything needs to be searched aka hold E to se what's on the shelf.
Walls have no meaning as zombies can climb everything, which is a absolute bullshit, they also clip through the top of the which is made specifically to prevent climbing over, they just walk through your base, zero fucks given.
Supply drops have never ending streems of incomming zombies that just spawn from thin air even if it is somewhere in middle of the plain fields. It's so dumb.
Not being able to assign NPC to certain jobs or at least set them to not leave the base so they stop being a burden is a massive issue. It would be such a huge gamechanger, just stay the fuck home, the character you control does everything anyway.
Base building is very limited and isn't rewarding much, some sort of a grid building system to build whatever wherever inside the base would make it so much better so I could at least place the tower/s somewhere where it would make sense instead of this preset bs.

This game focusses alot on story while keeping the Survival Element inside nicely.
Aside of the lesser graphics, this game is really nice, it's 'The Walking Dead' themed and really cool to go out there and Loot & Adventure stuff.
a few bugs but not too dramatic.

Lots of bugs make this game irritating sometimes, and ending is completely trash, but overall it;s a very solid game to spend time grinding resources and trying out a whole bunch of weapons and gadget to survive the apocalypse.
Breakdown DLC - Free mode on the same map as the basic game, not many new things here. This DLC only adds some feats like killing zombies with each type of weapon or special task to perform inside the base. It's ok if you enjoyed the gameplay of the base game.
Lifeline DLC - Very cool dlc, adds a small new map around the infected city. You play as the army and extract some ppl out of the infected zones. Defending the base from hordes and some new mechanics makes the dlc enjoyable.
