Guten Tag meine Lieben,

Positiv:

- Sehr schöne Grafik
- VR-Support
- Super gutes Audiodesign
- Sehr gute Kollidationserkennung
- Exzellente STAR WARS Musik
- Gute Optimierung
- Mehrere Herausforderungen mit kosmetischen Belohnungen
- Gute deutsche Synchronisation
- Sehr detaillierte Innenräume der Flieger
- Perfektes Gefühl von Geschwindigkeit und Stärke der Angriffe
- Mehrere Schwierigkeitsgrade
- Nur 31 GB groß

Negativ:

Langsam nervts.
Dazu kommt:
Spieler Level meines Teams:
54, 13, 15, 65, 21
Gegnerisches Team:
54, 132, 25, 150, 20
=> Das ist unbalanced pur!

I'm playing the game in VR and I'm totally mind blown from what I've seen until now. It's awesome to have the feeling that your sitting inside the cockpit and being able to look around while controlling the spaceship.
There are still some bugs in the game which I hope they will fix soon. But that doesn't let me down to continue this game. It definitely is my favorite game that can be played in VR at the moment.
I'm playing on a Oculus Rift S together with a Xbox One Controller.

Tollen Wingmen-Teamkollegen
Das Imperium zerlegen

Doch dann lockt die dunkle Seite
Titan immer in Reichweite

Schade!

Multiplayer and Singleplayer is very nice, please take into account that ea released a completed game without any dlc´s in the first run, and with a balance between empire and rebels. Please give this game a chance guys. For a new released title compared with other EA titels in the near past, its definitely a step in the right direction. Hope this game will be alive for a long time ! Double thumbs up from me here.

This game literally kills my Steam programm. I play it in VR and despite the fact, that almost every loading process in this game takes unbelievable much time, the game crashes back to desktop everytime I enter a mission. Entering a lobby works just fine but as soon as I want to start the mission with the other players the game crashes. Thanks to EA I get an information message with big red letters that I should rejoin my lobby or I have to face some fines. So I try to reenter my lobby and guess what, another crash back to desktop. The crashes are so bad that it even kills my VR app and freezes Steam so I have to shut down Steam by Task Manager.

I should have been warned by BFV that EA is not trustworthy anymore but I took the bite because it was Star Wars in VR. Stupid me, another 40€ wasted I wont get back from EA. This game is a horrible bugfest. Buy it in a couple of month when it´s on sale and hopefully EA has made some bugfixes.

Edit:

So finally the game doesn´t crash anymore, VR is working and the Joysticks have no deadzone anymore if you want to. So flying feels indeed pretty nice and you´ll certainly have some moments of joy. I even caught myself having a great VR experience when I was sitting in the Y-Wing and the cockpit went dark and bright because of the sun and I turned my head to look outside my real window to see what was going on outside (in the middle of the night). Unfortunately that was the best moment I had.

The single player is dull, there is literally no reason to play it except for playing a long tutorial. I never played one of the Star Wars space games but I played Starlancer and this game doesn´t come even close to Starlancer when it comes to story, tension and the wish to keep plalying. A Star Wars game in space should shackle you to your pc but in this case I rather clean some dishes or do laundry than invest any more time. It just doesn´t feel worth it at all.

In multiplayer you have three game modes. One coop with exactly one (!!!) mission on a couple of different maps. And two PVP modes with one being the coop mission just against other players and the usual TDM. Maps are OK but won´t give you a feeling of big diversity. Matches are quite uneven because there is no level filter and players leave the match every now and then. (I doubt most of them do it on purpose but because the game crashed.) Sometimes the match just ends because players left. Sometimes the game ends the match then and you waited like 5 min for nothing. So if you play like an hour you can expect to spend about half the time with waiting because you´re in a lobby or queue or watch the debriefing.

Oh, and the best part about PVP: you think a fighter like X-Wing or A-Wing would be the best space fighter in the game. Wrong, the bombers are the best ones. Sturdy, a lot of damage output and can even outmaneuver an interceptor. And since there is no much real teamplay (due to being a fast paced game) some other star fighter will come and destroy you while you´re chasing a bomber.

Sadly EA already announced that there will be no major updates, no dlc´s or any other additional content. So think about it, if you want to spend 40€ for a short and dull singleplayer campaign, a mulitplayer with three gamemodes and a couple of maps.

This game is fun but it isn't on the level of X-Wing vs TIE Fighter. I enjoyed the combat and customizability of the fighters. Dogfighting is very fluid and the controls are well done. Ultimately, though, the capital ship engagements leave me wanting more. Previous titles had truly epic space battles with large numbers of capital ships engaged in full on battles with each other. Don't expect that from this game.

I bought this game for the sole reason that it would be fun to play in VR. I have an oculus quest 2, and the game is completely unplayable in VR. I could have found this out if I had read some other reviews, but the game does not support the quest controllers, it must be played with keyboard and mouse, or some other external controls. The main problem and reason I'll be seeking a refund is that the yaw and pitch controls do not work properly while oculus link is enabled. The virtual joystick does not center, and I can only pitch up, rendering the game completely unplayable. Hopefully others have better luck with this.

I can't stress this enough. This game is niche and requires some practice and research. It is not for everyone. It may not be for you. There are better methods to play this game, in either VR or with a Flight Stick is very fun and probably the best ways to play this game. These are expensive options, so they aren't available to everyone.

However, it is absolutely beautiful and a lot of fun to play. If you prefer PVE there is the campaign which at times can be difficult. PVP however is where this game thrives, whether you play Ranked or Dogfight. Both modes are incredible. Dogfight is just TDM and works great for warming up and quick fun. The Ranked has depth and has a lot to it besides just blow up the other team, and teamwork along with individual skill matters. The community is welcoming and really enjoys the game hosting events from time to time. Killing someone is satisfying and is rewarding to win a dog fight.

I have played this game on M&K, Controller, and my preferred method, on a flight stick. All feel good and work well. My only issue is most of my friends can't run it. I would sink a lot more time into this game, however with no friends in the game and not a lot of time on my hands anyways I haven't put the time I usually would into a game I enjoy.

To wrap this up. This game won't be for you if you aren't that interested in sims/flight games. It is star wars. Yes this franchise is popular. Yet this isn't like battlefront where anyone can pick it up and play. It will take some time to adjust and get into. Though if that is your type of game, this is it for you.

typical EA game, great idea blocked by paywalls and poor production value. the only reason to buy this game currently is the story mode as the ranked community is extremely niche. the game is also extremely imbalanced as rebel A-wings are far and away the best ship to pilot and it always makes the ranked matches imperial vs rebel. overall if this game is not on sale don't buy it, and if you do buy it prepare for about 4-6 hours of story mode. It's honestly extremely cool to fly around in space but objectively for the cost it's just not worth it.

In order to enjoy this, you need to...

1) Like star wars or are a huge fan in order to appreciate the story.
2) Own a HOTAS for immersion of being an X-Wing pilot. I recommend the thrustmaster T16000M.

If you don't fulfill these prerequisites then you probably won't enjoy it.

Since multiplayer is dead I'll just review the campaign:

Pros:
-Some cool pilot and starfighter customization
-A few cool battles
-Some pretty views
-There's a badass tie fighter pilot who has survived a few hard landings. He's truly the only character worth talking to.
-Unique starfighter gameplay mechanics

Cons:
-Most of the characters are annoying
-Too much space, no missions in atmosphere
-AI is either stupid or godly, there is no consistency
-Too few starfighters
-Star Wars needs to fix this trope it has where everyone who dies comes back, this garbage is detrimental to the story.
-The story makes no sense, all of the officers are comically bad at their jobs, and it isn't really that enjoyable even if you ignore the flaws.
-Combat is extremely repetitive and downright not fun sometimes when the AI starts turning on dimes.

Verdict: Honestly I don't feel like this game was worth my time. The story is hollow and the game feels unfinished. It's not a terrible game, but I feel like if you just want to fly starfighters you'd be better off getting Battlefront 2 (either one) so that you can also relive the regular gunfights. I would ONLY purchase this game if you are a die-hard star wars fan, with the warning that you will probably leave the game with a negative or neutral opinion of it.

Got this game as it was advertised as VR capable, but it's only for the headset and the touch controllers aren't usable. As such it could have been incredible, but falls short of the mark.

I've seen a post from the developer explaining the reason for not including VR controller support was that it would give VR players a competitive disadvantage if they chose that option. That may be true, but give the players the choice and then let the matchmaking system correct for any reduction in performance. Some folks just want to feel like they're flying an X-Wing, and if we get shot down by every Tie fighter we meet then so be it!

I don't like the game, because it doesn't really add anything to the overall star wars storyline. It's just some random missions with a character that isn't important to the story. every mission kinda feels the same and I don't think it's worth the money. luckily I got to play it with my EA Play subscription so I did not waste my money. If you like flying games especially in sw then you should buy it, but defininetly wait for a sale.

Absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to play for VR.
DO NOT BUY FOR VR.
The controllers will not work and you will have to use your mouse and keyboard or such to navigate options.
The cut scenes look awful on VR too followed by choppy frame transitions and freezing.
Once finally in game I crashed.
I should have listened to other reviewers but I did not.
Luckily i got this on sale.
I will come back to it, non VR, when I feel like it... truly disappointing, but I should have known with EA.

It's okay. Not quite X-Wing vs TIE Fighter level of Star Wars flight sim, not quite Rogue Squadron level of arcade flier, but I had fun with it. I couldn't care less about multiplayer, I really only bought it for story mode, but the story is god awful, and about eight hours long, but the missions themselves were pretty fun. Worth buying on a discount, at least until someone finally figures out that they should make an actual X-Wing vs TIE Fighter successor.

Star Wars: Squadrons is a superb multiplayer simcade space simulator with a steep learning curve and in-depth movement mechanics. The game is easy to learn, and moderately difficult to master. To be successful and get full enjoyment out of Squadrons, you must learn proper movement techniques such as boost gasping, dead drifting, and 0 throttle boosting. Squadrons is best when playing with others, and there are a lot of communities to choose from. TFA, TRA, NRN, Gray Squadron, Emperor's Hammer, and others will help you learn how to fly and have many opportunities to fly with other pilots. The playerbase is slowly dwindling, meaning that a lot of the remaining active players are decently skilled at the game. You will be crushed and beaten badly if you come up against players who are much more skilled than you, which is why learning advanced movement techniques is so important. The game isn't for everyone, and if you aren't willing to put in a lot of hours learning these techniques, I can't recommend the game.

Squadrons is frequently on sale, so I would recommend purchasing at a discounted price.

If you're interested in learning how to get better at Star Wars: Squadrons, I would recommend youtube videos from Fencar, Hobbes, Quintessance, and Zyphaz

Another cynical Star Wars cash grab that could have been absolutely amazing. Instead, EA decided to stifle development and force the devs to release a game that needed extra time for testing and polishing. At best, this title is badly under-polished. At worst, some of the core functionality is broken.

This incompetent decision making by EA leadership completely gutted what could have been a long-term licensing cash cow that provided players with thousands of hours of joy. Instead, unimaginative stakeholders that don't understand how to make great games decided that a Star Wars license (one of the most lucrative on earth) wasn't worth the investment.

Hopefully EA continues to lose exclusive licensing agreements as organizations realize that bad video games don't acquit their brands well.

Pity I won't be able to finish this game just like many other reviewers because of a glitch that still after all this time hasn't been fixed by EA. In mission 10 after you exit the Star Destroyer's dock the screen goes black and you can only hear sound and a few UI items. I was denied a refund by Steam because I already played more than the 2 hours allowed before asking for a refund. A rule that makes no sense because this game IS broken just not at the beginning.

DO BUY BUY ! BROKEN GAME !

Loved this game, sadly the devs stopped the support.
its a task to fly using keyboard and mouse, if you can fly in battlefront games then you can enjoy this game.

story campaign is good.
multiplayer is punishing and rare to find a match these days, dogfights can be found.

story have preset of pilots and can select your own names.
Blue Tomato and Red Potato did a great job serving the empire and republic resp.

Would have loved to enjoy this game on VR if could buy one.

I want to enjoy the game but the terrible matchmaking is making it impossible to progress, being a group of level 5-10 beginners being matched against literally level 300+ players (not an exaggeration) due to the player pool being so small and stagnant with only the sweatiest of players still actually remaining. The UI is alarmingly buggy for a game that's been out as long as it has, making a simple task as inviting friends take forever. The VR settings do not work (at least in my case) a real let down as it was the main reason why i bought the game to play in VR. With only 2 basic game modes, dogfight and fleet, the game gets old very quick. Good points, the visuals are great though that's not really a challenge in this day an age. and when played with a flightstick it can be very immersive.

It's really sad the developers/EA abandoned this game so early. The game controls and plays great, especially the singleplayer campaign. The focus on multiplayer was a stupid decision in my opinion, a game that is at its best when played with a flightstick, VR and marketed as such isn't going to have a notable online playerbase and EA surely didn't promote and support this game enough.

Too little too late some might say, while I just let out a sigh of relief. I had Squadrons for a while and it's about time I throw in my two cents worth toward EA's attempt to redeem themselves. This and Jedi Fallen Order really do show they were trying to up their game.

The multiplayer side of things isn't much to talk about, this really is for those that are after a decent single player experience. The story of which does an ok job. It's ok in the sense that it ties into the Star Wars lore and is entertaining, however, doesn't add a whole lot. Pretty forgettable characters attached to a pretty forgettable story line, yet fun I guess.

The visuals and sound are superb! Can't fault the developers that EA have tasked with creating the right atmosphere to draw you into the Star Wars universe. Some nice little graphical tweaks in the options for individual taste too.

Which leaves us with the game-play. Look, this isn't a X-wing/Tie Fighter reboot that a lot of people were hoping it would be. But it's not far off. In fact, I would say it is a nice bump up from the Rogue Squadron series. Great arcadey, yet immersive game-play, good control system and a bright cinematic experience. It all mashes together to provide just pure fun.

If you are a massive Star Wars fan, you can't complain about the price. It's fair for what you get in a AAA title for sure. Pretty good for anyone that likes your space flight games if you can score it on sale. Give it a go.

People need to realize that VR doesn't have to include motion tracking controls! This game is a great example of how VR can just be used as an enhancement to an existing game that uses keyboard + mouse or gamepad. In fact, I personally think that's the best shot VR has at becoming a part of mainstream gaming. Treating it as some sort of abomination for VR gaming will only hurt the VR community in the long run.

BTW Steam clearly marks the input of this game as Keyboard + Mouse or Gamepad -no mention of motion controls. So don't complain if you didn't read the simple tags!

This game is a f****ing hassle to set up. EA immediately requires you to make an account. The game starts with a settings menu which for me was set to a drastically wrong screen size so I blindly had to figure out how to get off of that. Then an unskippable, albeit brief, cutscene. Just give me a damn menu EA. Just: LET ME GET TO THE MAIN MENU.

The real killer for me though is that when in VR, it wanted me to use my keyboard. Ok, no problem. Except that the keyboard will not respond. And my VR controllers are not in the game. So..wtf? I'm sure there's a way to fix this but I didn't buy a game to spend X amount of time trying to fix it right out the box. Garbage as usual EA.

If you had the chance to plays the legendary X-wing vs Tie fighter, this might brings back those old memories. Not worth the full price, but if you got at least a 25 % discount, then it's a worthy addition to your library

A great modern successor to X-wing V Tie Fighter. Don't buy if you're looking for anything more than a casual experience.

Highly recommend getting some sort of throttle and flight-stick. This is one of the best star wars games I've ever played. It felt like being in a star-fighter even without my VR headset.

tl;dr Matchmaking is awful and antifun, try on Gamepass or EA Pass first, don't buy.

I got some VKB sticks and was quite excited to play Squadrons. Single player was fun, but then jumping into Quick Matches and Fleet Battles I seem to consistently be matched against players 100+ levels, vs my level 8. Therefore I regularly just seem to get annihilated very quickly by high level players in nearly every match. I hardly ever seem to be matched against players around my level or skill level. As such I don't feel like I'm improving as a player or pilot and it's simply not fun. I am glad I tried this on the EA pass rather than wasting money on it via a direct purchase.

This weekend I played with my friend who has 100+ hours and is around level 64. He kept getting destroyed too so we just started quitting out when the matches were clearly lopsided (all the matches were lopsided). Eventually we got a message saying we would receive a penalty for quitting, and be matched against other quitters. Dear God, that punishment was heaven sent! Finally, FINALLY I got a match against players around the same level as me who absolutely sucked. I actually got some kills, and a positive K/D.

But a game where I have to quit to get matched against other noobs who were sick of getting destroyed by high level players has something fundamentally wrong with it's matchmaking, and this has to be one of the most frustrating space sims I have ever played, and therefore I can't recommend it to anyone.

Had the game since about launch, it was pretty good back then. But it kind of fell flat as time went on. It was intended to be a multiplayer game, but you can usually only find ~300 people online at a given time. In comparison, Ace Combat 7 has ~2000 people online at the time of me reviewing this, and that game was made in January 2019.

If you're buying this, buy it for the single player campaign only. The multiplayer tends to have people that will kick your ass as they've been around since launch.

Nah. Took forever to get vr working. It wanted to switch from vr mode to monitor mode every time I took off my headset to use the keyboard to start . Then my character is spaced too far away to read any of the dials in the cockpit and had to spend an hour on forums to fix it. Didn't like the controls. I tried every layout and mine felt right. The only game that's made me nauseous.

I would have preferred to give a = rating instead of a thumbs up.
They tried to remake the X-Wings series. They failed. Thus, the game is ok, but not convincing.

Star-Wars ambiente: 10 / 10
Story: 3 / 10
Missions: 7 / 10 (average) fun ranges from 10 / 10 to 1 / 10.
Multiplayer: - (never tried it; was flying story mode only)

+:
  • It is wonderful to fly battle missions again.
  • The grafic engine is smooth.
  • Some epic battles.
  • The power balancing feels good and familiar.

-:
Although I love to fly missions, the spirit of the original X-wing series is missing.
  • Some basic feats are missing: In the original series I could activate in my X-wing single shot mode, double shot mode or shooting all four lasers at the same time. I also could open and close my wings (was useless but, well, it gave the feeling of the real X-wing)
  • The story changes sides several times, coming up with some absurd twists.
  • On one point [small spoiler], you activate some reactor cores in a ship graveyard, in order to lay a trap for a retreating fleet. This makes no sense at all: The graveyard consists of left over scraps of dismanteled ships, said (valuable) cores were apparently just left as useless junk, then a whole fleet is not able to detect these powered cores that explode like nukes. In order to do so, the player has to shoot at them at close range, taking no scratch but destroying capital ships close by.
  • In the original X-wing I had the feeling of participating in big battles, making a difference as the key figure on the board in a party of chess. Yes, I was the one delivering the devastating blow, but only because all the other pieces were there, in the right position, too. In X-wing squadrons, this feeling is missing. I feel like the queen on the chessboard, the opponent left with pawns only. It is always a massacre.
  • The game is 'cheating' to give the impression of a big heated battle: some enemy fighters appear on the radar, but in truth are just sitting around until some others are shot down so it is their turn to 'occupy' you. In training missions I was also taking on a Star Destroyer with my X-wing to try out some tactics. It is possible (and fun) to reduce their firepower shooting down their weapon systems. But as I had most of them destroyed, there was still some heavy fire coming from the Star Destroyer when I came close. I could not find any weapon system that could still shoot, the laser fire was just 'popping up' from nowhere, so I would get the impression of anti aircraft batteries. That's lame!

All in all, the balancing is disappointing.

In VR its an amazing experience. Worth the money. Just make sure if your using a joystick you have a joystick with at least 12 buttons. During the game the game would pause to tell you to press a certain button when learning something new and if you didn't have a button assigned to the joystick I had to cancel the game and restart it to then assign a button just for that one action. I may have been doing something wrong but it was the only work around I could find until I bought a new joystick. A very solid single player campaign. I haven't tried the multiplayer yet.

Boring

Campaign is just a boring tutorial to get you use to the different ships for the multiplayer that is dead.
The story is dull and goes nowhere.
Every mission has you fighting the same ships over and over with little variety.
Bugs like constantly switching your voice or character to be a different gender removes any immersion. Theres a lot of diversity and pandering put into this, which some or a normal amount isn't a bad thing its just too much and in your face alot. You cant disable HDR without going into the files.
The only fan service is Star Wars Rebels related.... very disappointing.
Previous Star Wars fighter games are much better than this garbage.

A couple pros are the graphics look amazing maxed out in 4k, especially the backgrounds. And it ran well with no fps drops.

This is a single player review. The game probably has its merits in multiplayer, but that won't be my focus here.

Let's start with the good. The presentation, graphics and sound is A level and fits the whole star wars theme well. It's also performing really well, I've had decent framerates on my i5 / 1060 rig on highest settings.

However, the singleplayer campaign is more or less just a tutorial for the multiplayer part and will be finished in roughly 15 hours. There is a story, but it's not engaging at all. You play part time rebels and part time empire, but none of the characters is particulary likeable. Your alter ego is nonexistant, you just listen to the babble of random npcs.

The fighting itself doesn't come anywhere close to the depth of the classic xwing or tie-fighter games. It's very arcade and straightforward.

You can reasonably pick this one up on a sale, it's not bad per se, to get your star wars fix.
That is, if you're a fan like me.
Just for the space shooter part, there's better games out there.

This is a great game the community is by no means dead at all. There are so many discords to fly with other pilots and constantly teams looking for new players to join them in the skies. Highly recommended. If you enjoy fast paced skill flying this game is for you. VR looks beautiful and the ships all feel amazing.

The game would be fine if it were sold as some sort of space sim, or something along those lines.
It is marketed, and pushed as a quick and easy multiplayer action space ship shooter type thing.

What it is is an exercise in frustration. It takes nearly an hour or more to set up a hotas to work with it, the mappings are buried under 5 menus. The default controls are inverted and the yaw is set to roll, like it was built by an alien with no concept of how normal people expect joysticks to work out of the box.

I few out on the first mission and immediately proceeded to smash into the side of a wall and explode, in case it wasn't obvious that's a terrible first experience for a new player. I spent the next hour fiddling with the sensitivity, control mappings, changing, testing... It was such a ridiculous and frustrating experience for a type of game that should be pick-up and play.

Why did it take that long? Because even though my hotas (and many out there) have default firmware that lets the PC know which buttons have which names, the game (made in what 2019-2020?) ignores this and names every button by a number with no symbol or anything to represent it, just a number in a circle. Like the developers were not aware that games made 8-10 years ago can show the button names, or a symbol that lets you know where it is on the stick at least so you can easily set it up.
Why is this a legitimate gripe? My hotas, like many others, has over 30 buttons on it, and this game has at least 18-20 mapped ones. If it doesn't work out of the box it's a pain to use. How am I to memorize what button 22 is? it's labeled T2 on the stick, or D, or A. It really isn't that hard to get it to read those inputs, and there are what maybe 8 or 10 hotas' sticks being sold nowadays? It's not that much dev time to support them.

I am going to give it a try with a controller, but it feels like I've been led to this by frustration rather than by suggestion. If it works out, I'll update, but so far this has been a disappointment, par for the course EA, par for the course.

Wanted to recommend this game, but as of the time of this review, I am unable to find any matches anymore. Played for some hours and managed to reach level 15, and have not been able to find any matches ever since. My cross play is enabled and I am in South East Asia, I know that matchmaking used to take me about 1-2 minutes but now I am growing tired of waiting for 10 minutes and not being able to find a simple dogfight match. What's so strange is that I can see so many custom matches available, which I can join albeit with no XP, but I'm not able to join any match through the quick match option. EA has killed this game for those of us whom are living far away from Europe / USA. Be warned, if you are in South East Asia and thinking of picking this up, you may or most likely may not be able to find games.

I hate to put a not recommended for this one...

I was SO excited to play the game. Installed it. Fired it up. Was all ready to blast stuff.
And then it hit me... You can't change one crucial control on the mouse+keyboard setup, which is absolutely stupid.
Yaw & Roll. Roll is ALWAYS on the mouse left/right and yaw is A&D. I really can't play the game because of this. Decades of playing different flight sims etc, you can't just magically turn it around and think you'd be comfortable with it.

I recommend for fans of stars wars and fighting in the deep void! Bought for use in virtual reality I am not disappointed, it s just amazing. When I was little, I built cardboard ships and let the imagination do the rest. Now I am an xwing or tie pilot, it's impressive. This game is used with a quest 2 headset and works perfectly with a gtx 1070. I recommend for older children like me !

It's arcade-y nonsense. Design decisions to make it work with VR and consoles are evident throughout.

The most egregious for me is that controls are sloppy if you use anything other than a gamepad. Trying to play mouse/keyboard was a nausea-inducing experience where you're constantly trying to return the mouse to 'center' to stop swirling around because the controls were built around having that dead-space on a stick. EDIT: What I mean is when you push the stick in any direction then let go, the stick returns to the neutral position. With the mouse, the center of the screen is the neutral position so you need to try and move your cursor to there. If your cursor would be on the top half of the screen your ship will continue to pitch up, even if you're no longer moving your mouse. It isn't intuitive at all.

Combat/Dogfights feel like a J.J. Abrams movie with so much s**t happening all at once. Despite being in the vast emptiness of space, it seems like when you're in combat everything happens in a small, extremely cluttered area. There's no closing a gap to neutralize enemies ability to rain missiles towards you, or to really punch your thrusters to pursue a fleeing enemy that's trying to return to the hangar to repair or jump away to hyperspace. The sense of scale just isn't there. In the campaign new ships appear out of nowhere, in a neverending stream of reinforcements like a CoD game.

The campaign is wooden. By the third mission I was already skipping non-essential, between mission conversations. The other pilots are little more than a checklist of stereotypes and diversity boxes. SHOW ME who these people are, don't have them tell me in awkward, one-sided conversations. They could have just as easily shoehorned in the dialogue during lulls in the combat during missions. But again, the missions follow the J.J. Abrams formula of MOAR IS BETTAR!! with checkpoints and squadmates to lead you by the nose through the pre-scripted events. The squadmates vary from being utterly useless (to ensure the player has to actually do something) to being invincible (to help hold your hand and keep you from making a mess).

I have no interest whatsoever and no intention of playing the multiplayer. I can tell the balance is a mess from the singleplayer based on the ship stats and abilities/loadouts.

The best part about the original X-Wing and TIE Fighter games was the combat and contrasting the different factions and the play styles required. You were the underdog in X-Wing and had a more well-rounded set of ships to showcase that and mission types were more hit-and-run. In TIE Fighter it was a little sketchy flying unshielded craft, but you could rely on overwhelming numbers and support from capital ships to crush the enemies of the Empire and later on you gained access to more specialized ships (F**K yea assault gunboats!). In creating a more balanced set of ships for use in the multiplayer component something was lost. Unfortunately, because of this design decision Squadrons pales in comparison to DOS games from the 90's.

Sadly, after 4 hours of trying to find a way to enjoy this I think I'm better off just firing up TIE Fighter or House of the Dying Sun instead. Squadrons isn't terrible but I disagree with the design choices made and how it turned out. The game just isn't for me.

EDIT 12/31: Yeah. Squadrons is... bad. Replayed the first few missions of TIE Fighter over on GOG and a few missions on House of the Dying Sun. From a singleplayer perspective (again, no interest whatsoever in the 5v5 PVP and the associated grind), there are much better options out there. TIE Fighter is 25 years old, has potato graphics, MIDI sound and currently costs less than 5 dollars CAD and has a longer, more varied and enjoyable campaign. House of the Dying Sun is pretty short but has extremely tight combat/campaign missions and is under $8 CAD with full VR and HOTAS support to boot. Unless you really want a Star Wars fix and/or Squadrons is on sale, I'd pass.

Is this the spaceship combat game I've been waiting 20 years for?

Yes.

Having it in the Star Wars universe was an unexpected bonus.

There have been other spaceship combat games - the X Franchise, EVE Online, Elite Dangerous etc, but the core of those games is the trading, the working up to the bigger and boomier spaceships.

But nothing I can think of that captured the enjoyment I had back in the 90s with multiplayer games of Terminal Velocity. Unreal Tournament 2004 came close, but the flight system felt pretty dumbed down. And it wasn't a spaceship game, it was a FPS with some spaceship levels bolted on. Until Squadrons came along.

This game has the right balance between difficulty and playability. Like the X-Wing games, you need to manage which systems are getting more power, between engines, weapons and shields. You get two auxiliary weapon slots and a countermeasures slot. There's an option for Instruments Only HUD if you're feeling hard-core. There are four difficulty levels.

There are no microtransactions in this game. You can earn points to unlock different items for the ship slots, and different points unlock cosmetics for your ship, pilot and cockpit. There are 4 classes of ship (soon to be 5) - currently the fighter, the all-rounder, the bomber and the support ship.

This game IS definitely better with a flight stick.

There's a good single player campaign - 2 prologue missions and 14 actual missions. The story flips between Imperial and Rebel (Resistance/New Republic/whatever, I always get this wrong), and you get to try out all the ships and learn their features.

The multiplayer has two main modes - dogfight, which is just simple enjoyment, and Fleet Battles, which involves both teams strategically taking out their enemy capital ships while defending their own.

I definitely recommend this game.

After 42 hours in this game, I can finally write a review I feel comfortable with.

It's not good.

On the surface, it appears to be the modern X-wing/TIE Fighter/Rogue Squadron that we've all wanted for so long. The game looks amazing, and the star wars ships we've grown to love are all intricately detailed down to the individual buttons on the X-Wing's console. Unfortunately, like most modern Star Wars, once the shiny new graphics and blinding rushes of action wear off, you find that the package given to you is little more than a bare minimum effort that feels cobbled together at best.

First, while the ships included are very well detailed and look the part, they have significant problems in practice. Balance is non-existent, and playing some ships (Such as the A-Wing in Dogfight and the TIE bomber in Fleet Battles) allow players to cheese the mechanics of the game in ludicrous ways. For instance, the aforementioned TIE Bomber can literally park next to a Rebel Frigate in Fleet Battles and single-handedly destroy it in a single life. This is a HUGE issue that, one month on from release, doesn't have an announced fix. Similarly, the A-Wing, with its shields and repair combined with a small hitbox, makes it a major pain in the ass in dogfight. After maining the TIE Interceptor in that mode, the A-Wing felt like I turned the difficulty notch down to novice.

Dogfight is also hampered by overpowered utilities. Instead of finding yourself in tense turning wars like you would in other flight sims, the highly accurate and low-cooldown seeker mine ability forces your adversary to break off or instantly die with little to no chance to hit their countermeasures. Dogfight also has no ranked mode or skill-based matchmaking, and it sometimes feels like kicking children in the teeth. As of this writing, I have a 3.37 KDR with an average of 15 kills per game. This is neither fun for me or the enemies.

The content provided is also incredibly light. Motive 's goal here was to release a complete game, and while that is a noble goal in the modern games industry, it's simply not enough when you have no plans for future content. There is a HUGE difference between complete and feature complete, and this game lands nowhere near the latter. Two modes, one of which has no actual ranked mode, plus a short campaign with generally uninteresting characters make this feel like an alpha rather than the final product.

That feeling is also supported by the bugs. My GOD, the bugs. If you've ever wanted your campaign to completely break (either refusing to load or having the mission-critical AI fly around in circles), then this is the game for you. The cosmetics, which are the main reason to keep playing, often break and remove themselves from your fighter or pilot after every match. The framerate has a habit of doing whatever the hell it wants and the game is most definitely prone to crashes.

On top of all of that, there are also uncountable mild annoyances; One player being able to hold up an entire match of 10 people for 2 minutes is absurd and a fine example for my point. Sometimes, games lag out JUST enough to screw with your aim, but not disconnect you. The Galitan map exists. Countermeasures sometimes don't deploy correctly. A whole bunch of little things.

Overall, this will be my last purchase of a Star Wars video game. I got burned with Battlefront 2, but this game gave me a glimmer of hope that post-LucasArts Star Wars games could be something special. That glimmer was promptly snuffed out like the last brain cell in Rian Johnson's head when writing The Last Jedi.

Don't buy it. Use your money on better games. You can buy Among us for yourself and 7 friends for the same price, for a far more fun and substantive gaming experience. What's here in Squadrons is lacking, and with nothing planned on the horizon, you'd be wise to spend your money elsewhere.
