Du willst dich in Gin ertränken?

Yes I have only played 2 Hours of this game so far on Steam. But.. I played about 4 hours of the demo for the game during a previous Steam Fest event. Had alot of fun on the demo and said to myself that I would be picking up the full version when it comes out.

It is pretty much a Steampunk version of Disco Elysium. The quality of the dialogue and writing is great and the game world is well thought out. Just the type of game I was itching for atm, having just finished BG3, Cyberpunk Expansion & Starfield. Wanted a dialogue heavy rpg and that is just what I got here with this game :)

It also runs very well and controls perfect on the Steam Deck for those who care. It is nice having another Crpg that handles perfect on a controller, it doesn't happen all the time.

If you liked DE or you like the Steampunk setting, pick this up asap!

This is a great narrative RPG with a cool setting that has some Arcanum (steampunk + magic/fantasy) vibes! The Magic is fairly muted so far but there might be more in different parts of the setting.

I tried two different runs to see how different things get and was happy to see a pretty big change to the personal stories of the characters for me. Example, playing Atticus as a decent minotaur struggling through some things but trying to make things right and be a good chap... versus playing him like a brutish jerk just looking out for number one. Sure you hit a lot of the same places but the feeling changed quite a bit for me!

Ultimately, if you liked Disco Elysium and a victorian fantasy steampunk narrative RPG sounds likes a good time to you, give it a go!

A beautiful game set in steampunk Victorian London. You begin as Atticus, a minotaur magician, who is battling his personal demons when he's approached by a mysterious stranger. As Atticus, you explore the dark underbelly of the alternate Earth setting, making decisions based on your inner voices and deciding how to approach the different challenges (brute strength, wit, sleight of hand, etc.)

When I moved to the second chapter, I was surprised to get a new hero to play! There are three (or four) in all--Atticus the minotaur, Clara the lounge singer, Teddy the inventor, and Teddy's sidekick, Otto the automaton. The way their stories intertwine is the creative heart of the game. I loved seeing the world through each character's eyes and figuring out what was important to each of them.

This is a narrative-driven game based on skill checks, with no combat. The writing is stellar; it drew me right into the game and made me care about the people within. The art is gorgeous, too. While the overall play time is short, lots of decision points and ways to tackle challenges means I'll definitely play again after my first game is done.

Highly recommended!

Fun game! I heard it is short (around 10 hours per play-through) but the possibility of multiple play-throughs and the low price point I would already say it is worth it.

A really well done RPG, the aesthetic is beautiful, and steampunk victorian london is weird and wonderful to roam about in, also within the first hour you get to befriend both a dog and a cat, which must be good, really looking forward to exploring more.

I liked Sovereign Syndicate even more than I anticipated in my preview; it was my Christmas game over several hours. After eighteen chapters playing as Atticus, Clara, Teddy, and a couple as Otto, I saw the credits roll and wanted to keep playing. Now, halfway through a second playthrough, I hope we will see much more of this Victorian steampunk London in sequels, and more strange stories of Minotaurs, Dwarves, Cyclopes, and others—a league of extraordinary fantasy folk.

We’re enough years on from the critically successful release of “Disco Elysium” that entire dev cycles influenced by its creation have had a chance to pass. We were due for more combatless RPGs and Sovereign Syndicate is a clear descendant of that lineage…maybe a bit too clear to be honest.

The first, second, and third things you notice about Sovereign Syndicate are how its constantly kneeling in deference to its inspiration. You’ve got a text-heavy narrative adventure where you spend most of your time looking at a right adjacent dialogue box. You’ve got multiple internal monologues personified by different parts of your psyche. You’ve got this victorian era detective mystery set in a port city with labor sympathetic themes, and you’ve even got at least one amnesiac protagonist among the three you swap between.

I’m not normally one to dock points for unoriginality but the striking parallels make unfavorable comparisons far too easy, especially when you consider how many rungs down the production ladder we’re going.

Lack of VO is the right call for a game with a budget this thin, but there’s little to no visual flourish or gameplay mechanics to distract from the fact that most of the game is reading a book with the character models awkwardly standing still the whole time.

That book does have its moments, particularly when our protagonists converge, but for me its a game whose juice wasn’t worth the squeeze.

Part of this game finding its audience, and the question you need to be asking yourself if you think it’s up your alley, is how much this game being an ‘RPG’ was influencing your decision-making. It walks and talks like one: this isometric perspective and all the historical fantasy elements definitely give it that kind of flavor.

But it doesn’t really scratch those itches. If this had anime girls we’d all be calling it a visual novel, and I think that’s a much more apt comparison. I’m not trying to gatekeep the genre label, I think we could use an infusion of deep character building systems that manifest in more ways than just swinging pointy sticks differently; but I think what makes Sovereign Syndicate harder pressed to hold that tag compared to something like Disco Elysium, is the relative unimportance of skill checks.

When you start the game you can pick an alignment for each of the playable protagonists and they open up different dialogue paths when speaking to NPCs and diceroll your success based on how much you’ve reinforced that alignment type through your choices. Importantly, they’re normally just flavor to how a conversation moves forward rather than a meaningful check. It’s all “RP” no “G”, you can wade your way through the entire story fumbling through every check and you’ll still get to where you need to go. It isn’t until the final act where there’s any meaningful stakes to the options you’re clicking.

The few times there are strong requirements for a skill check it will just game over you rather than respond to your failure in the story. There’s a particularly bad sequence towards the end of the game that has a daisy chain of dicerolls you need to succeed in and every failure boots you back to the main menu to retry the sequence again. No opportunity to take your knowledge of the failed check to change strategies nor any cool story consequences to your failed rolls: you either reload an old save or just play diceroll simulator ‘til the gods smile upon you.

It doesn’t help that it was a particularly crucial story moment: it’s like the one example of there actually being some semblance of a game here and it takes the wind out of the narratives’ sails rather than aiding them.

When you’re not talking to NPCs you’re exploring the world for clues and completing side quests. The three characters typically alternate on a chapter by chapter basis: each having their own distinct motivations but ultimately intertwining on the same story about London’s elite and the needs of the many vs. the needs of the few.

The exploration itself is mechanically light: Sovereign Syndicate prioritizes narrative flow over actual detectiving. Your quest log will always point you to where you need to go next, which keeps the pace brisk and the overall runtime of the game somewhere around the 10 hour mark give or take how many extra side things you wanna do.

Its greatest virtue is the thoughtfulness of its world and the characters inside of it. Motivations and incentives are a key motif, and you can anticipate a few of the games twists if you’re keeping a keen eye on which parties stand to benefit from some of the murders and events that happen.

Dont expect much in the way of mechanical reward for good sleuthing: even if you’re following along closely and observing every clue, structurally the game is still railroading you through a very particular sequence of events and is unwilling to let you leave a handprint until the very end. Its hard not to escape the feeling that you’re just a passenger in this game rather than a player.

Those strictly seeking a Victorian era narrative adventure may find what they’re looking for here, but for me that fantasy was too afraid to step out of its inspirations’ shadow, and was underserved by toothless RPG systems.

The game does end with a clear setup to either a sequel or another game in the same universe, and I do hope that game comes to pass. As a freshman title from a new studio, Sovereign Syndicate has succeeded in creating a modest “Disco Elysium-lite”, but the only reason its reach didn’t exceed its grasp is because it didn’t reach very far to begin with.

Disco elysium type of game. Don't expect alot of action it's a narrative heavy game.

The writing is good. The story is interesting. There are three main characters all pretty different and all well writen. The world is pretty intruiging too a steampunk london filled with creatures like werewolves, cylcopses, minotaurs etc.

Story concluded in a satisfactory manner while leaving the path open for sequels.

Nice artstyle in pretty much every aspect. Animations weren't great and some textures could be better.

Worth a playthrough.

A Fascinating Victorian Steampunk RPG

Have you ever wanted to play Disco Elysium but it’s set in Steampunk London at the turn of the 20th century where dwarves, centaurs, cyclopses, minotaurs, werewolves, and prostitutes converge in a seedy dance of death and deception? If so, you've come to the right place.

Five-Minute Video Review: https://youtu.be/37YT9a32d78

STORY

Sovereign Syndicate is a non-traditional, combat-free RPG that gives you control of a fascinating quartet of characters, each with a complex backstory and compelling role to play in this wicked Victorian-era nightmare. You’ll kick things off as Atticus Daley, a sexy gin-soaked minotaur seemingly set on drug-induced self-destruction. That is until a mysterious Old Crone telepathically invades your hungover thoughts and starts guiding you on a weird trip down memory lane, back to the orphanage you swore to leave buried in the recesses of your sad subconscious. Maybe a little dance in the opium den will help put your troubled mind at ease... or rip it wide open.

While Atticus trips, let’s check in on Clara Reed: a high-class dollymop to London’s scummy elite, and desperate to buy herself a new life in a faraway land. But when the Courtesan Killer—a Jack the Ripper replica—starts murdering all of Clara’s hooker friends from the Velvet Rose, East End’s favorite fictional brothel, well, it seems like Ms. Reed’s time in London has just begun.

Speaking of time, Sovereign Syndicate rounds out its quirky quartet in an almost abandoned clocktower, where the unlikely duo of Teddy Redgrave and his eager automaton, Otto, plot out bounty-hunting hijinks for the highest bidder, be that the boys in blue down at Scotland Yard or the dockside gang down the street. Together, Teddy and Otto (the latter of whom might go on to accidentally inspire a city-wide robot uprising), find themselves unknowingly intertwined in the drama of Atticus and Clara, thanks in large part to a Masked Stranger who’s for some reason set on bringing everyone together.

In short, Sovereign Syndicate delivers a wonderful narrative-driven experience that sports an intricate, multi-pronged plot, vibrant and memorable characters, and the first non-voice acted 5/5 I’ve ever awarded a game for dialogue (full scoring breakdown available on my profile page). Though technically a shameless recreation of Disco Elysium’s dialogue system whereby parts of your personality compete against each other, Sovereign Syndicate manages to stand out by delivering an unparalleled attention to historical linguistic detail. Really, there's an almost overwhelming amount of Victorian slang on display here, but the game’s handy built-in dictionary means word nerds like me will never have to stop to look something up (for example, did you know the space between your bed and the wall is called a ruelle? Me neither!). It’s a nice touch that earns the game solid marks for User Interface, which brings us to Sovereign Syndicate’s Gameplay and Content.

GAMEPLAY & CONTENT

When you’re not busy reading, and—let's be honest—you always will be, Sovereign Syndicate gives you a wonderfully weird if small slice of Victorian London to explore with six locations excluding the game’s exciting finale. Each location features a fun cast of side characters who will give you dozens of mostly interesting side quests, but the real fun is seeing the same things through the eyes of different playable characters. As Atticus, Clara, Teddy, and Otto interact with the world, you’ll unlock Tarot cards, which open up branching dialogue options and give you more ways to approach RNG encounters. That’s right, as was the case with Disco Elysium’s dice system, Sovereign Syndicate has you draw minor tarot cards to determine whether certain parts of your personality fail or succeed at certain circumstances.

For example, will Atticus’s “Wit” figure out where the heck this Masked Stranger is taking you? Probably not, because I’m roleplaying Atticus as a max Animal Instinct idiot who drinks and/or smashes everything in sight. At least I was, until I started to feel bad about plunging his “Hope” into the gutter, thereby denying me access to happier branching dialogue options, and what can I say? I’m a happy lil’ dude :) So, while nothing about this system impressed me per se, it does a good job of injecting intrigue into the many, many walls of text you’ll read.

STYLE

Finally, a few words on style. Sovereign Syndicate lacks in high-res textures, quality lighting, and smooth animations, but the overall visual effect is still an enjoyable one thanks to pretty watercolor transitions between menus and hand drawn comic panel style action scenes. And, while the sound effects here are nothing special, the game’s soundtrack stands out thanks to a dedicated song for each area and a full-length oral vocal performance by the lovely Miss Reed herself.

CONCLUSION

In the end, Sovereign Syndicate is a very enjoyable if non-traditional RPG that, without combat, ends up playing like an interactive point-and-click adventure title. I beat the game in a little over 10 hours but feel like a second playthrough is warranted, so for $20 I think the game presents above-average value.

I’m giving Sovereign Syndicate a solid aggregate MEGA score of 3.75/5 and am happy to answer any questions you have about the game or my review.

It's a Disco Elysium inspired steampunk narrative RPG. But not very similar to Disco Elysium, let me warn you.

The playable characters are interesting and fun to play as. The main story made me curious and a little emotional. Overall, I enjoyed playing it without encountering bad-writing which dooms this kind of games. I found dialogue options limited occasionally but it didn't bother me most of the time.

To sum up, if you love story-rich games give Sovereign Syndicate a try.
